She stood in front of her locker before first period sorting through the books and folders she needed through the day to make as few locker stops as possible. There was commotion around her but she blocked it out trying to remember if she would need her copy of Jane Eyre for her honor’s English class or not. To be safe she tosses the book into her bag continues to rummage through her locker. She’s lost in her own world, not noticing anyone around her. Not even the large football player, now captain, slide in beside her and lean against the locker to the right of her own. She sees him from the corner of her eyes and is startled by his presence. Even when he speaks she keeps a calm demeanor continuing her actions as before.
“Hey Y/N, how are you doing today?” He asked, a half smirk painted onto his perfect lips.
“I’m fine Reggie.” She replied cooly.
The boy gulped and the smirk fell from his lips as he tried to keep his own calm facade before the girl. “That’s good. I’m fine too.” He pushed a smile onto his face, flashing his pearly whites to her but as he head was still shoved into the locker only the metal door could see the perfect gesture.
“I didn’t ask.” She sighed, taking a few books from her bag and stacking them into the locker neatly.
“I know I just, never mind. So I was wondering if maybe you wanted to-” Reggie began but he was cut off by her soft but authoritative voice.
“No.” Was all she said.
Reggie pressed his head against the wall a frown now falling over his features. “But-”
“No.” She said again. A smile word that shattered his day.
“Come on, j-”
“Nope.” She replied once again cutting him off as she tossed another book into her bag.
“Can you let me finish my sentence?” He practically begged.
Y/N rolled her eyes. “Fine.” She said turning to look at him expectantly.
Reggie’s eyes grew wide and for a moment he forgot what he had intended to ask her but he quickly regained his control. “Thank you, just let me take you out to Pop’s for a shake. Oreo is your favorite right?”
“No.” She stated plainly again turning back to her locker.
“Oreo isn’t your favorite?” He asked, he was so sure he had seen her order it dozens of times from Pop’s.
Y/N rolled her eyes again and shook her head. “Yes it is but I’m not going to get one with you.” She explained in an exacerbated tone, now becoming annoyed with the boy beside her.
Reggie frowned and began to beg and plead. “Please? I promise if you go out just this once I will never ask you out again.” Reggie was not one to grovel but he was growing tired of the back and forth as much as she was.
Her eyes grew wide. “Never again?” She asked, wanting to be sure she heard the boy right.
“Never again, unless you want me to.” He assured a smile growing on his face once again.
Y/N thought for a moment before swinging her bag onto her shoulder and closing her locker door to look at Reggie once again. “Fine, just because Oreo shakes are my kryptonite, and you’re really starting to annoy me. But just one.”
Reggie’s face lit up at the answer. “One is all I need to win you over.” He assured.
“But you have to drive me home after; they still haven’t caught Jason’s killer.” She explained, straightening her back and looking up at the rather tall boy.
“I can do that, any other requests?” He asked, the smile never leaving his face.
She thought for a moment before shaking her head. “No. I’ll meet you there at 6.”
“I’ll be waiting.” He smiled and waved to her as she walked off to her first class.
Y/N rolled her eyes and mumbled to herself. “I’m sure you will.”
By the end of second period everyone knew about Y/N saying yes to Reggie. She heard whispers in the halls as she made her way to third period. She glanced at people as she passed but kept her head held high. Though soon she was caught up to by her best friend Betty Cooper.
Betty reached a hand out to Y/N’s shoulder as she caught up to her. “You’re going on a date with Reggie?” She asked, wide eyed and smiling.
Y/N rolled her eyes. “It’s one milkshake, it’s not the end of the world.” She emphasized.
Betty took hold of Y/N’s hand and pulled her to a stop in the middle of the hall. “He’s been asking you out since the 7th grade and you’ve been turning him down since the 7th grade. What changed your mind?” She asked, beyond curious as to how her friend had flipped a switch she swore would never be flipped.
Y/N cocked her head and looked at the beautiful blonde with an unamused expression. “I’m in the mood for a shake and I already spent my allowance for the week.” She explained harshly and Betty’s smile dropped. Y/N’s face softened at her friend’s expression.  “Seriously, let it go, it’s just a milkshake.” Y/N placed her hand on Betty’s shoulder and smiled sweetly at her.
“A lot can happen over one milkshake, that’s how long it took me to realize I was in love with Veronica. One milkshake can change a lot.” Betty explained with a smile. Y/N rolled her eyes and laughed before walking away down the hall. Betty giggled and called out to her, “Have fun tonight and be safe! If you see anything suspicious call me!”
She smiled at her friend’s comments and continued on her way to her next class, which would sure be filled with whispers of her impending milkshake with Reggie Mantle.
Y/N stood just outside the glass door of Pop’s Choclit Shoppe. She took  deep breath and flattened out her skirt. The fact that she would be joining Reggie for a Milkshake in a few short moments had not only made it’s way through the school but through most of the town by now and she was sure there would be plenty of eyes gawking at her as soon as she entered the diner. So with another deep breath she pulled open the door to the diner to find that she was right. It was six on the dot and all eyes turned to the door when she walked in, most of them were other students but there were a few adults scattered around the place looking at her with a smile.
She looked around the seating area for the tall boy she had said yes to earlier in the day to find him sitting in a booth in the back of the diner staring intently at his hands. He was dressed in a pale blue shirt she was sure was the nicest shirt he owned and he was certainly over dressed for Pop’s. Nonetheless, she straightened her back, held her head high and made her way towards the table.
When he caught sight of her Reggie stumbled a bit trying to stand up quickly. He wiped his damp palms on his jeans and made an attempt to greet her. “H-hey, how’s it going? What are you doing here?” Y/N looked at him with a confused expression. Reggie’s eyes widened as it dawned on him what he had said. He brought his hands to his face and mumbled something about being an idiot. Y/N slid into the booth and Reggie kept standing, “It’s good to see you, won’t you sit?” He took his hand from his face to find that she was already sitting. “I’m going to stop while I’m ahead.” He shook his head and plopped back into the booth.
Y/N rolled her eyes. “Will you stop making a big deal out of this? If you keep making a big deal out of this then everyone else is going to too, so stop it.” Reggie nodded then turned to the waitress that had come to take their order. After ordering the two spent several minutes in an awkward silence, most of the patrons had gone back to their dinners but some of the teenagers still had their eyes on the two of them and Y/N was growing uncomfortable under the pressure.
She pulled her phone from her purse and began scrolling through various social medias as she waited for her shake to arrive, trying to forget about the many uncomfortable eyes boring into the back of her head. Reggie reached across the table and rested a hand gently on her arm. She looked up to see a worried expression on his face.
“You don’t have to be here if you’re uncomfortable.” He explained in a soft tone.
She sighed and shook her head, dropping her phone back into her purse just as their shakes were placed on the table. Y/N painted a smile onto her face then looked over to see Pop standing beside their table. “Hey Pop, what are you doing out here?” She acknowledged the large man standing beside the table with with a smile.
“Well I had to come see my best girl.” He smiled and patted her on the shoulder.
“I didn’t know you had such a loving nickname for Reggie.” Y/N giggled turning to the boy across from her.
“I’m talking about you ya goofball.” Pop chuckled at the young girl.
“I know,  but how did you know I was here?” She asked, happy to talk to one of her favorite people in the town.
“Really? You’re the only one in this whole town that orders an Oreo shake with whipped cream, chocolate sauce, caramel sauce and exactly 3 cherries.” Pop Joked.
“I do have a rather unique order.” Y/N admitted, suddenly feeling bashful.
“Mary came back and told me you were on a date with little Mantle, I didn’t believe her so I had to come see for myself and here you are, finally said yes to the poor boy, I can’t believe it.” He finally explained his reason for being out at her table when there were so many orders to be made up.
“Pop.” Y/N dragged out the letters of his name in embarrassment.
“I’ll leave you two kids alone have a nice time.” Y/N sighed as Pop walked away and turned to her shake.
“You seem pretty close to Pop.” Reggie acknowledged taking a sip of his shake.
She nodded. “Yeah, I use to come here all the time with my dad when I was little and my mom worked here for a while in between jobs a few years ago and picked it up as a second job after Dad left.”
Reggie nodded as she told the short story. “Yeah, my parents and I used to come here a lot when I was young too. We still do, when they’re home.”
“They’re gone a lot aren’t they?” She questioned.
“Yeah, all good causes but I miss them.” He explained awkwardly.
“I bet you’re alone a lot.”
“I am.” He agreed
“Me too. Mom works all the time, it’s usually just me and my cat Leia.” She chuckled, attempting to lighten the mood.
“You have a cat named Leia? I have a dog named Vader!” Y/N’s eyes lit up as she heard the name. The two talked about their pets, then about Star Wars, then about video games, then books. Before long the two had finished their shakes, then ordered another to share along with a basket of fries for the two of them. They sat and talked for hours, it was almost ten o’clock when Reggie had finally gotten Y/N home. Now the two sat on her porch swing, still talking.
“No no no, the book is still so much better than the series!” Y/N exclaimed, a giggle leaving her lips .
“Probably but you can’t say that I don’t resemble Zach Dempsey at least a little bit. Not to mention personalities. tough jocks with a nerdy and sensitive side, come one that had me written all over it!” Reggie insisted.
It got quiet between them for a moment as the stared into each other’s eyes. “You gotta stop doing that.”  She started
“Doing what?” He asked.
“Saying things that make me wanna kiss you.” She shook her head and turned away attempting to explain herself. “You’ve been doing it all night and I am becoming less and less capable of controlling myself.”
“Then maybe you should stop controlling yourself.” Reggie suggested.
“What?” Now it was Y/N’s turn to be confused, she turned to look at Reggie with wide eyes. Before she knew it Reggie’s lips were gently pressed to her own. In the moment shock consumed her and before she could really kiss him he was pulling away.
“I’m sorry I just thought that-” He was cut off my Y/N putting her hand around the back of his neck and pulling his lips back onto hers. This time he was the one in shock but that didn’t keep him from kissing her. Her hand were touching his hair and her lips tasted like cherries. He wanted to pull her closer, he wanted to hold her closer than he’s ever held anyone before. His skin was hot and his heart was racing and he was sure she could hear it because he was sure he could hear hers. When they finally pulled away Y/N stood from the swing and turned to the boy who still sat in shock with his eyes closed.
“How about dinner and a movie, say tomorrow?” She suggested.
“I thought it was just one milkshake.” Reggie asked, feeling heat rise to his cheeks.
“We can have a milkshake too.” She leaned down and kissed him softly on the lips, as she pulled away, her lips still slightly brushing his she whispered, “Goodnight Reginald.” Then with that she turned around and walked into her house and Reggie sat on the porch stunned and eager to spend more time with her over many shakes at Pop’s.
