Late Sunday, the driver of this 2011 Ford F150 pickup, driven by Juan Lopez-Diaz, 26, of Moline, fled Rock Island police and came over the Centennial Bridge into Davenport. Lopez-Diaz could not negotiate the right turn on to West 2nd Street from the bridge and slammed into a utility pole, totaling the truck and severely damaging the pole, including dislocating the pole from its base and knocking the traffic signals down. The crash occurred at 11:38 p.m. Lopez-Diaz fled the scene on foot but was captured by Davenport police not far from the crash scene. He is charged with operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated, leaving the scene of an accident, no insurance and striking a fixture. Rock Island also is pressing a charge of eluding.
In one of the above photos, Davenport Police Sgt. Brandon Noonan looks at how the truck struck the pole. There was concern the pole would fall if the truck was moved. An city engineer was called to check the scene. The pole didn’t fall and was replaced Tuesday.
