Sunday Snippet

I was last tagged by @disgruntledkittenface to share a snippet of my WIP. I’m still plugging away at this (PIVOTAL) salsa club scene in Arise, Fair Sun, so please enjoy! 

While he may have stopped spinning, the room feels like it still is, leaving Harry a bit wobbly on his feet. He stumbles forward, flinging his arms around Louis’ neck to catch himself. Louis is ready for him, his hands flying to Harry’s waist as he steps back on one foot to steady them.

“Oops,” Harry laughs, resting his forehead on Louis’ shoulder and closing his eyes, waiting for his equilibrium to settle. Louis adjusts his stance to make him more comfortable, resting one hand on the back of Harry’s neck, the slight pressure grounding him as he takes a deep, cleansing breath, releasing it slowly. 

“Hi,” Louis chuckles lowly, scratching the base of Harry’s skull comfortingly. “Okay there, princess?” 

“Yeah,” Harry assures him, his eyes still closed, vaguely aware of the song and the rest of the dancers continuing on around them. He takes another breath as he turns his face into the crook of Louis’ neck, which turns out to be a massive mistake because fuck, even when he’s sweaty he smells good. “Just got a little dizzy is all. S’hard to spot down there.” 

“Mmmmm,” Louis hums, the vibrations in his throat tickling Harry’s nose. “You did good though.” 

Harry blinks one eye open, his interest piqued. 

“...How good?” 

Louis doesn’t answer. Harry opens his other eye, relieved to find that the room has stopped spinning. He stands back so he can look at Louis properly, his hands on Louis’ shoulders. Louis just looks back at him, a smug grin on his face.

“Lou,” Harry demands. “How good?” 

“Twelve turns good.” 

“Twelve,” Harry whoops triumphantly, giving Louis’ shoulders a little shake. “So we won.” 

“It wasn’t really a competition but–”

“But we won,” Harry insists. “And don’t give me that ‘It wasn’t really a competition,’ bullshit, Louis. You wanted to be better than them just as much as I did.” 

“I did, I did,” Louis admits with a laugh. “We are professionals, like you said!”

“And you just had to do one more turn than I said we could do,” Harry teases. “Just had to prove a point, didn’t you?” 

“You said at least eleven,” Louis protests. “I was going for fifteen, but my arm gave out.” 

“Aw, poor baby,” Harry coos, his hand sliding down and massaging Louis’ right bicep before he can stop to think about what he’s doing. “We’ll just have to work on your strength for next time then, won’t we?” 

“Next time?” Louis asks, arching an eyebrow as he glances down at Harry’s hand. 

Shit. What is he thinking? Louis is leaving town as soon as this production is over. 

There isn’t gonna be a next time, even if he wants there to be. 

Fuck, does he want there to be a next time? 

“I mean–” Harry flounders, withdrawing his hand. 

“I like the sound of that,” Louis says quickly, closing some of the space between them, something akin to hope in his eyes. “Next time.”

I just think everyone should take a moment to consider the question "what is your visual shorthand for cruelty?" and then follow it up with a critical "and who taught you that?"

specific examples include but are not limited to

why is an evil timeline character design disabled? (why do the heroes go through equally punishing battles and never lose an arm, a leg, an eye?)

why are the futuristic scifi terrorists uniformly darker skinned? (why are the heroes so much lighter?)

why is the greedy boss fat? (why are the heroes skinny?)

why is the criminal mastermind heavily scarred? (why is the brooding, traumatized hero unscathed?)

why is the predatory creep a bearded person in a dress and makeup? (why are none of the heroes trans women?)

who taught you that this is how things are?

how long do you plan on repeating it?

the funniest meltdown ive ever had was in college when i got so overstimulated that i could Not speak, including over text. one of my friends was trying to talk me through it but i was solely using emojis because they were easier than trying to come up with words so he started using primarily emojis as well just to make things feel balanced. this was not the Most effective strategy... until. he tried to ask me "you okay?" but the way he chose to do that was by sending "👉🏼👌🏼❓" and i was so shocked by suddenly being asked if i was dtf that i was like WHAT???? WHAT DID YOU JUST SAY TO ME?????????? and thus was verbal again

watching bridgerton and obviously there were a lot of things wrong with the way socializing has worked in the past, but honestly the idea of a "calling hour" is so appealing. office hours for friendship. you can show up unannounced at my home between 1 and 3pm. you must leave by 3pm. the men and boys are innocent too.

we cry "the innocent women and children" to appeal to the masses, to try and force their sympathy, but the men and boys are innocent too.

I have seen sons crying out for their mothers, their fathers, their siblings. I have seen them break down at the loss of their families. I have seen them cling to their dead and grieve.

I have seen fathers cradle their dead children, seen them kiss their faces and hold their little hands. I have seen them faint with grief when asked to identify the dead. I have seen them carry their sons and daughters. I have seen them fasting to provide what little they can for their families.

I have seen men and boys digging through the rubble with just their bare hands, I have seen them comforting strangers, playing with children, rocking them, hushing them, even if the face of such imminent danger. I have seen them cry, seen them grieve, seen them break down into each other's arms, seen them be selfless, beyond selfless, becoming something I don't have a word for.

I have seen the men who are doctors refuse to leave their patients, even when they have no medicine or supplies to give them, even when they're threatened with bombings. I have seen fathers who have lost all their children pick orphans up into their arms and proclaim them their child so they are not alone. I have seen men and boys digging pets out of the rubble.

the men are innocent too. the men and boys are being hurt and killed too. the men and boys are grieving too. the men and boys are scared too. the men and boys are fighting to save their people too. the men and boys deserve to be fought for too.

no creative notes because this isn't that kind of comic.

I know I don’t owe any of you anything but I still felt compelled to write about my long term absence. And I feel far enough away from the dangerous spot I was in to be able to make this comic. I have a therapist now, and she agreed that making this could be a very cathartic gesture, and the start of properly leaving these thoughts behind me. I am still, at seemingly random times, blindsided by fleeting desires to kill myself. They’re always passing urges, but it’s disarming, and uncomfortable. I worry sometimes that my brain’s spent so long thinking only about suicide that it’s forgotten how to think about anything else. Like, now that I've opened that door for myself, I'll never be able to fully shut it again. But I’m trying my best to encourage my mind in other directions. We'll see how that goes.

I am still donating all proceeds from my store to Palestinian causes. So far, I've donated over $15K, not including donations coming from my own pocket or the fundraising streams which jointly raised around $10K. In the time since I made my initial post about where this money would be going, the focus has shifted from aid organisations to directly donating to escape funds.

If you'd like to do the same, you can look at Operation Olive Branch, which hosts hundreds of Palestinian escape funds or donate to Safebow, which has helped facilitate the safe crossing and securing of important medical procedures for over 150 at-risk palestinians since the beginning of the genocide.
