11 Questions Tag Game
I was tagged by @babygirl06301 Thank yoooooooou.
Post the rules
Answer the questions given
Make 11 questions of your own
Tag 11 people (or less lol)
1. Top 5 fictional characters of ALL TIME?
You sure started off with a hard question. It’s so hard for me to pick just 5 fictional characters considering i obsess over just about everything. Here we goooo.
Jon Snow: He is by far the best character of all time. Considering how much I love Game of Thrones this one probably isn't a shocker to the people who know me. Jon goes through a lot of pain and suffering through the show and it shows when he is trying to protect something he truly believes in. Besides his good looks and his loyalty, something about him is inviting and before you know it you are cheering on the little bastard from the north... Or... Aegon, yah know whoever he is.
Dean Winchester: Alright so this one is probably not a shocker either, but Supernatural was the first show I ever fangirled about seriously and Dean was the first fictional character I really fell in love with. His character development is seriously top tier. What I really love about him is that he’s not afraid to tell people how it is. He speaks his mind and that is one quality I wish I had myself.  When he’s hurting he tries to push everyone away and play it off like it doesn't matter but deep down he genuinely cares about everyone. and plus he’s got a badass demeanor is what originally made me love him.
Katherine Pierce: In The Vampire Diaries, Katherine was always hated by every character in the show and fans of the show. But to me, Katherine showed some courageous qualities that made her interesting to me. She's evil as fuck, but honestly thats what is so good about her. She doesn't take anyones shit, she is almost always betraying someone, but yet everyone in the show would keep working with her or trust her. She caused a lot of issues, but it made the show fun to watch. Plus there were moments where she would do the right thing and you couldn't help but relate to her.
Spike: I have gone on and on about this character in the past. Spike is such a damaged soul, but just like I mentioned before about Katherine, His character benefits from it. As the show goes on his character goes though alot of development and I think the reason why I loved his character so much was due to his raw emotion. Spike mentions that he is love’s bitch etc. He knows that he has all these feelings but yet as a vampire he shouldn't feel this. Despite the fact that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was a show about vampires, i related to his character more than any others.
Wonder Woman: Considering that it was the first successful solo female superhero movie should be enough, but Diana is legit amazing. She doesn't back down from anything, she doesn't let people tell her she cant do something. Besides her kickass costume, her passion and curiosity for humans is what really shines through. Sure she does look badass and she's strong too, but her true power comes from her heart. Which speaks to me on another fucking level.
2. If you could have literally any animal as a pet, what would you choose?
Any pet? Hm, Like, if I could own a Lion and not have it rip my face off that would be so fucking cool. Imagine cuddling with a lion. Like... If it was the sweetest Lion and you could feed it, play with it. Omg. How much fun. I love exotic animals.
3. Given the opportunity, what musical artist would you want to sing/dance on stage with?
The fucking goddess herself. DEMI LOVATO. I love her so much and being able to sing the same songs that have touched my heart over these years, on stage, with her?! Omg what a fucking privilage that would be.
4. What is the most ridiculous holiday you can think of (whether already in existence or not)?
NATIONAL FRIED CHICKEN DAY. IM SORRY BUT CAN WE NOT?
5. What do you feel is the most overrated piece of technology?
Okay this is actually hard for me, considering I love technology. I’d have to say the Apple Watch. I know I know, you may be saying “But Morgan, dont you have an Apple Watch?” Yeah I do, I spent $300 on it and barely use it.
6. What are a few features your dream house would have?
Honestly? I never really thought about the house I would own. I suppose having a beautiful house would be ideal right? Id seriously like a working 2 door garage.... So I wouldn't have to keep my car outside in the winter, plus I'm sick of brushing snow off my car...
7. When you think of yourself, what color do you assosiate with yourself?
Red, I feel like I have a fiery spirit but yet sometimes I get in a little slump where all I feel is pain like flames... LOL OKAY WHAT DID I JUST SAY.
8. Llamas or alpacas?
CARL?!?!?!?!?!?
9. Top Hat or Newsboy Cap?
Newsboy cap, my grandpa used to wear one everyday.
10. Mountains or forests?
Mountains intrigue me. Especially if you go hiking, some of the prettiest sights I've ever seen were from hiking up mountains.
11. How easily do you get scared (i.e., would anything relatively creepy scare you, would you have to watch some pretty heavy stuff to get nightmares, or something in between)?
I honestly used to be so hard to scare. I used to go see scary movies with my friends all the time back in the day, but now I seem to get scared easier. I’ve gone through haunted houses and thought I would pass out because I wasn't sure what would happen. I suppose that is because I’m not in control of what will happen.
I do like to watch Ghost Adventures and anything that falls along those lines. After watching the show I always have a weird feeling. I tend to look over my shoulder more or out of the corner of my eye, thinking I see some shit. Then that feeling goes away like a day later. IM FUCKING WEIRD I KNOW.
My Questions:
1. What was the reason you decided to start your Tumblr?
2. What are your top 5 music artists?
3. What was the first tv show that changed your life?
4. If you would wear one outfit for the rest of your life what would it be?
5. Marvel or Dc?
6. Do you have any hidden talents?
7. What is your #1 ship? and why?
8. What is your dream job?
9. Dinner and a movie or take-out and Netflix?
10. Android or Apple?
11. When are you the happiest?
Again, thanks for tagging me @babygirl06301. Im not sure if anyone would like to do this, but il tag y’all anyway! @shewhohangsoutincemeteries @stevebarnacles @musicismysecondlanguage @kingpadackles  @letsgetdowney @loserasss @p4nd4m0nium @angelsandaliensspndw @theinternetaddictedmoron

The Inevitable Breakdown of Louis’ Observer Interview
At this point it’s pretty much necessary for me to take notes as I read these things so that I don’t tear my hair out with how much I want to yell at the writer and the narrative.
On the surface this article is sympathetic, I guess, in a way, but it’s one of those insidious narratives that’s even more frustrating because of the fact that it’s pretending to be positive.
I’ll go into my notes and then sum it up at the end.
Things that serve an obvious, pre-established BS narrative
Simon the Saint: Simon is called ‘the great gatekeeper of celebrity’ which yet again paints him as the sole reason that 1D succeeded rather than anything based on their own talent, effort, and merits
1DHQ Were Benevolent Evil Dictators: the claim that Louis doesn’t feel he ‘earned’ his succeed because he never really ‘worked hard’ is weird, I get the idea sort of, but this ignores the fact that we know the boys were worked to exhaustion during TMH and probably at several other points
Hiatus is a Break Up:there’s the whole ‘see where it was going’ thing with the hiatus stuff could be taken as a battle royale solo 1D reference, but it also could be taken as a ‘the band is done for good’ thing which is what Syco and the press have been pushing about the hiatus the whole time
also, it makes it sound like Louis was dead set against the hiatus, but Liam just recently said in an interview that Niall was the most against it, I don’t think he mentioned Louis at all? but I can’t be sure unless I look back at it
really, the title and tagline of the article are all you need to see to prove this narrative’s presence
Solo vs. Solo: writer is far too interested in making 1D's solo careers seem like an intentional battle royale when the boys have always made it clear they aren't competing and only the press and some of the fans insist on framing it that way
the entire first couple paragraphs are artistic vomit to this effect
the way they frame the talk about the hiatus seems to lead to this conclusion by saying Louis was against it and could ‘see where it was going’it also says Louis didn’t want to ‘concede’ and then lists ‘bandmates’ as some of the people he didn’t want to concede to
Breakout Star Harry: Harry is indisputably painted as 1D’s star in the article with him being used in several places to contrast Louis’ ‘underdog’ status, this is in line with the solo-Harry-who-eschews-1D image they’ve been pushing since forever
#RealMe: we’ve got Louis’ being grateful for the ‘opportunity to talk super openly’ which is the solo Louis version of #realme, Liam definitely had this type of thing in his interviews too, I think Harry did and maybe Niall but I don’t remember as clearly
They’re using the whole sickly/unstable thing again
they talked a lot about his chain-smoking, particularly in relation to stress and lack of confidence
the most irritating is the ‘curled up in a foxhole, pale and chain-smoking’ comment
they talked about him having ‘personal issues to work through’ and going to Vegas to 'blow off steam’, since they talk about Jay later in detail, then why did they leave ‘personal issues’ vague? seems like it was phrased deliberately to further the image of him being unstable
they talked about him having a fake ID and bemoaning the loss of house parties
they really hammed up the ‘rigid, ‘plastic’, ‘color draining from his face’ during the X-Factor performance when he honestly held himself together remarkably well and no one would necessarily know the situation by looking at him
bring up the airport mess and then say he can’t legally say anything about it???  he was cleared by the courts, so why can’t he?
maybe he can’t say the details or the blame, but he should at least be able to say something like ‘it was blown out of proportion’ or ‘there was more to the story than the press published’ or something
having him say nothing and then afterwards framing the comment about his music ‘revealing a more complete picture of him’ makes it seem like he’s admitting fault when he didn’t do anything wrong in the first place
Overlapping with the sickly/unstable image is the bullshit about Louis being the poor, little, undeserving underdog who has no confidence in his own abilities and who is more than likely bound to fail in his solo career
'fringe-member’
imply Louis is a ‘2nd-tier member’ along with Niall and Liam
'most fitfully appreciated’
'underdog’
‘odds are against this tilt’ in relation to his solo work
‘unlikely go of it’
‘concede to [bandmates]’
‘find themselves bound to ride out whatever thrills and trials come next’
‘inched off the hill again without necessarily considering the gradient of the slope’ as if Louis is a child who’s unknowingly gotten in over his head
his music was called ‘modest, rather lovely, and quiet’, which aren’t necessarily bad things, but there are much better descriptors than those weak, lukewarm ones- how about sincere, captivating, and passionate or moving? or something along those lines
called him the ‘Last Directioner’ in a way that’s clearly not just referring to his order of solo release, that doesn’t make sense anyway since he wasn’t the last to release a song???
made sure to include that he had to audition for X-Factor 3 times, but made no mention of other bandmates who auditioned more than once
has Louis praising his bandmates, but frames it as if he doesn’t have any of those good qualities, in fact the interviewer is the one who asks “and then there’s you?” and prompts the mental image of Louis being separate from the positive things Louis said about the others
heavily implies that Louis road on the coattails of the band and that Louis rightfully (in the opinion of the writer who calls him self-aware) feels like he doesn’t deserve the money or attention he’s gotten while in the band
something that is possibly the grossest part of the article is framing Jay’s death as some sort of retribution for Louis getting success he didn’t ‘earn’ or ‘deserve’ in the band, as if her death is his fault somehow
I get the waiting for the other shoe to drop thing, it’s like the feeling that everything is going too well and something’s got to go wrong, it’s not entirely unbelievable that Louis might feel that way considering the band’s success and the fact that he found the love of his life too
still, the idea of Jay getting sick and passing away being related to Louis not being ‘worthy’ of the success he’s had is really messed up with the way the framing and context of the article as a whole
I can’t honestly think Louis thought another shoe would drop either, the closeting and knock-down-drag-out fight with 1DHQ was already the other shoe
makes it sound like Louis foresaw a fight-to-the-death solo career melee during the hiatus and was strongly against it in fear of his own chances with ‘it wasn’t a pleasant conversation’ and ‘I was against it, I could see where it was going’, basically makes it seem like he was clinging to the band to support his career
claims that Louis can’t get collaborators to talk to him on his own
question: why even bring up collaborators in the first place? how many well known artists did 1D ever collaborate with? Ed Sheeran... anyone else?  maybe there were a couple well known industry writers, but otherwise there was nothing
it seems to me they’re making it seem like Louis MUST have someone to collaborate with or he can’t write or perform music which is BS
very obvious call for fans to support his solo career by saying he wants to prove that their support of him was worth it through having a successful solo career
ends on a very negative note about his solo prospects, it’s noncommittal and uncertain to the point where it’s obviously saying that his career is unlikely to succeed without ‘wanting’ to say it, the wishy-washy stuff is definitely intentional and in line with the tone of the article
The way they portray Louis doesn’t actually make any sense
first they say that he’s interested in the backstage stuff, that he was the one designated by the band to talk to the label, that he manages a girl-band on the side, etc.
then they say that he was a ‘fringe-member’ of the band that designated him as their spokesman, that he can’t get collaborators to work with him despite being good at managing and behind-the-scenes stuff
first they say that Louis tried out for X-Factor a 3rd time despite rejections the first 2 times, that he doesn’t want to concede to anyone and is going for a solo career despite naysayers, that he was the one who argued with the label on behalf of the band, that he’s decided to go into managing, which all indicates him as a fierce, determined, persistent person
but then they claim that he’s got confidence issues up the wazoo and constantly talks in defeatist terms and is consistently self-deprecating- even if Louis does have some confidence issues, pushing forward gung-ho rather than constantly down-talking himself would make more sense
Other things that were said but don’t add up
they said he was most confident in performing during his last year, which is interesting since his stage presence was greatly reduced sometime around 2013 or so
they claim that Just Hold On was ‘rolled out through One Direction’s old record label, Syco’ but Steve Aoki’s label was the one that released it
it makes it seem like Syco would have been releasing a single for Louis through... old loyalty? rather than him actually having signed, why would they be releasing something for an artist who they didn’t have a contract with?
considering Syco was already claiming that Louis was signing with them during the release, this framing is disingenuous as well as baffling in terms of realistic business common sense
the fans are called ‘fanatical’ and then later, right after the airport stuff, it says that some ‘fanatical’ people can’t see Louis as a real person, the message here is a bit confusing
is this trying to say this his own fans refuse to see that Louis is the type of person who would punch a pap? (which he didn’t do but the article is trying to push a bit)
is this trying to say that the fans that attacked Eleanor did it because of not seeing Louis as a real person?
considering that the fans were sort of? praised for being ‘fanatically’ loyal and basically challenged to make Louis’ solo career succeed, it’s odd to see ‘fanatical’ people (interpreted as fans) also painted in a bad light for the same qualities
the article claims that Niall and Liam are 2nd-tier members and it’s clearly painting Louis as the biggest underdog, so the assumption that Harry and Zayn are the only ‘1st-tier’ members?
ok, then, we’re ignoring Liam’s vocal chops and Niall’s 1st place popularity in the US and Ireland and 2nd place popularity in the UK (via polls) apparently, as well as Louis’ extremely loyal fan following and prowess as a songwriter and industry persona
back to the collaboration thing, they frame Harry as the one who can get famous people to collaborate with him, but Zayn and Liam have collaborated with many more people than Harry so far
Conclusion
Okay, so the reason this article is ‘positive’ on the surface is because it’s revealing some of Louis’ hardships to the public and painting him as an underdog.  People like to root for underdogs, especially if they’re likable.
Negative Tilt
HOWEVER.  Very big however.  What the article does that’s very clearly not positive is that it implicitly agrees with all the things that are supposedly Louis’ insecurities.
If Louis says that he feels he hasn’t earned his place and the article goes on to talk about how he’s obviously underselling himself, that’s one thing.  What the article does instead is give a head nod and agree that Louis is ‘self-aware’ of his own supposed shortcomings.
Even when it mentions something that should be positive like Louis’ position as the group’s self-appointed spokesman, it takes all the power out of it.  Rather than framing it as Louis being a leader or being willing to stand up to people, it frames it as him being so insignificant onstage that he can only do things backstage to make up for it.
It does the same thing when talking about his new music; it takes the power out of it.  Instead of describing it with words that evoke strong positive feelings, it uses extremely flimsy and submissive words like ‘modest’ and ‘quiet’ and then adds a qualifier, ‘rather’, to the word ‘lovely’.
Painting Louis as an underdog is one thing, but putting him down at every turn is another.  The phrases in that article, especially when put together, are sickening in their insistence that he’s not as worthwhile as the other 1D members.
Failing Image
On top of this, it pushes the image of Louis being sickly by talking about him having a ‘wan’ face, the ‘color draining from his face’, and being ‘pale and chain-smoking’.  It uses cigarettes as a theme throughout, then adds images of him partying, from the time he was young with ‘a fake ID’ to the present time with ‘personal issues to work through’ and a need to ‘blow off steam’.
It’s the exact same image they’ve given Zayn.  They use legal or low-impact drugs, sickly images, and partying to imply behavioral instability, the inability to handle stress effectively, and/or a heavier drug addiction.
Quotes
It seems like a lot of Louis’ quotes could actually be real quotes that were used out of context or framed a different way by the writer.  Most of them have the normal Louis-brand of humility and joking self-deprecation to them, but the writer makes them seem much more hangdog than we would normally hear them coming from Louis’ own mouth.
I think the positive things he said about the other boys are probably all his words, as well as the quote about people not seeing him as a person, but those two in particular seem like they were moved from an entirely different part of the conversation and put into their places by the writer.
The one quote I really doubt Louis said as written is the one about the hiatus. Firstly, it doesn’t match up with what Liam said about Niall protesting the most. Secondly, there’s no way to take that last sentence other than 1) 1D are competing with their solo careers, or 2) the hiatus is a break up.  Neither of those things is remotely true and the boys have been more than clear about that.
In the case of 1, it also implies Louis wanted to cling to the band in order to continue making money and being successful because he knew he couldn’t on his own.  I don’t buy that for a second.  Even if Louis really didn’t have the talent to go solo (which he does), I wouldn’t buy that he’d fight the others having room to grow in order to demand a continued free ride on the band’s coattails (as the article paints it).
Official Narrative
I don’t have a ton to say on this point since the bullets pretty much speak for themselves.  It’s everything we’re used to seeing and everything that serves 1DHQ’s purposes.
There is one thing in addition that I’d like to talk about, though.  There’s no explicit narrative about Louis’ relationship with Harry in the article.  There’s no Larry denial or outright negativity.  However, the way Louis talks about Harry is very rushed and impersonal in relation to his comments about Niall and Zayn. I would wager it’s because he knows he’s not allowed to get too detailed and/or warm and fuzzy about Harry.  In fact, I would bet he was reminded just before the interview because the fact that Zayn got brought up in a positive sense at all has to have been approved ahead of time.
The other thing is that Louis is set up in direct opposition to Harry several times throughout the article.  This makes it look as if Louis is jealous or as if Harry has turned a cold shoulder to Louis in light of his own success.  It subtly supports the bad blood they supposedly have according to the narrative.  At the very least, it makes them look distant and disconnected from each other.
The Point of It
Several people have already theorized that Louis’ team is trying to paint him in a pathetic light to galvanize fans to come and ‘save’ his solo career.  Basically, they’re trying to get the fans to pay lots of money out of loyalty rather than the label or management having to spend money on promoting him.
It serves a double purpose since it gives Louis a negative image and attempts to declaw him.  That’s something 1DHQ has always been after considering that Louis and Zayn were always quite fierce in their opposition to 1DHQ’s bullshit.
By most accounts, Louis is the most effective 1D member when it comes to negotiations and networking, which is something Simon is probably very unhappy about considering that Louis won’t roll over and play dead, instead challenging Simon.  Anything that makes Louis seem less powerful than he is probably works in Simon’s favor to try to reverse Louis’ influence BTS.
Zouis
It’s interesting, and infuriating and ominous, that Louis and Zayn’s narratives so far are the most alike.  They’ve both gotten the least support from their solo teams in terms of proper promo, they’ve both been portrayed as drug-users and party-goers, and they’ve both been hinted at as unstable or unfit to be artists.
Liam’s promo has been full of BS to an incredibly extent, Harry’s had hidden jabs at the others here and there as well as a confusing mix of pro-LGBT sentiment and het-Harry! narrative, and Niall’s has been relatively mild aside from him being used to confirm or support the narratives of the others.
Zayn and Louis are different from the others in that their images are getting utterly trashed and instead of having off-base promo, they’re barely getting any at all.  Zayn and Louis both have had print interviews, but we’ve already seen Louis get no promo support for Just Hold On like Zayn got none for his singles or MITAM.  Louis also looks like he might have a fashion deal just like Zayn’s, which may well lead to fashion-Louis getting more attention than music-Louis, just like has been happening with Zayn.
Speaking of Zouis, this article basically upholds the current narrative with them. While Louis is praising Zayn and talking about how they had similar feelings during their first year, it’s all about the past, so it’s not overly positive about the present.
The ‘back in the day’ part being it’s own separate sentence actually indicates lingering tension, which I’ve always believed was constructed for the sake of the narrative in the first place.  It’s hard to say whether that bit was meant to be negative or not because it’s not even clear what question Louis was answering. It starts off with an ellipses at the beginning of the quote and there’s no given question stated by the interviewer, so the context of the original interview is impossible to tell.
Still, I’m kind of happy to hear anything positive from one boy about any of the others, especially about Zayn.  There’s just been such a lack of it lately due to the narrative.

Ariana Grande’s actions prove her heart is full of genuine love for the world.
Ariana Grande’s actions prove her heart is full of genuine love for the world.
Tumblr media
When you hear the word Hollywood, what comes to mind? Could it be fame, money, luxurious lifestyles and their influence?
Honestly, there is no right or wrong answer. Hollywood is filled with positive and negative influences, it’s not a secret.
That’s why celebrities who are positive examples are so important to the industry. In fact, if you think about it, you can compare this to your own workplace. There are always positive people and those who are difficult.
True charity is the desire to be useful to others with no thought of recompense. – Emanuel Swedenborg
Hollywood is filled with positive influences including Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, Demi Lovato, Mac Miller, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Kesha, Selena Gomez.
In fact, each of these artists took the time to share their own battles in an effort to help others in the world.
For example, when the Manchester attack happened, which killed 22 concertgoers and injured more than 500 other individuals.
Grande couldn’t sleep without giving back and helping those in need. And what she did next was absolutely beautiful.
The Manchester Attack
After the Manchester attack, Ariana Grande felt sad. I mean, can you imagine how it would feel to have one of your events crashed by evil terrorists? As a human being, I can only imagine the pain and heartache she felt for those who were in attendance.
To further illustrate, she took to social media to share her emotions.
“My heart, prayers and deepest condolences are with the victims of the Manchester Attack and their loved ones.
There is nothing I or anyone can do to take away the pain you are feeling or to make this better.
However, I extend my hand and heart and everything I possibly can give to you and yours, should you want or need my help in any way.
The only thing we can do now is choose how we let this affect us and how we live our lives from here on out.
I have been thinking of my fans and of you all, non-stop over the past week. The way you have handled all of this has been more inspiring and made me more proud than you’ll ever know.
The compassion, kindness, love, strength, and oneness that you’ve shown one another this past week is the exact opposite of the heinous intentions it must take to pull off something as evil as what happened Monday.
YOU are the opposite.
I am sorry for the pain and fear that you must be feeling and for the trauma that you, too, must be experiencing.
We will never be able to understand why events like this take place because it is not in our nature, which is why we shouldn’t recoil.”
– Ariana Grande
As a result of the attack, Ariana Grande and her manager Scooter Braun put their heads together to make a positive difference. The time had come to show these terrorists they cannot stop love, they cannot stop us from gathering, celebrating music and showing compassion for one another, they will never win.
The gorgeous 25-year-old singer worked hard to pull together The One Love Manchester benefit concert and it was perfect beyond, leaving many feeling empathies, love, acceptance and kindness for one another.
Beauty comes in many shapes and sizes. And Ariana Grande? Well, she’s just one of the many beautiful things we got to witness during the Manchester benefit concert.
The classy lady was joined by many other high-profile talent including Justin Bieber, Mac Miller, Ariana Grande, the Black Eyed Peas, Coldplay, Miley Cyrus, Marcus Mumford, Niall Horan, Little Mix, Katy Perry, Take That, Imogen Heap, Pharrell Williams, Robbie Williams, and Liam Gallagher.
Ariana Grande is a positive influence for so many people, including those who were fans during her “Victorious,” television series days.
One fan told PCG how he stumbled upon Ariana Grande and how she has influenced his life.
“In 2010, during the height of my prolonged unemployment, I stumbled onto Victorious. Yes, the show is geared toward children, however, the simplicity of a television program was a necessary distraction from falling into emotional despair. The adorable actress with the red hair caught my attention. She role-played her character so well that it brightened my mood. You just had to keep on rooting for her.”
Another fan Jess Morgan opened up about the tragedy. She said:
“These past few weeks have been tough for every single person! When I first heard about what happened at Ariana Grande’s concert, I was shocked. I didn’t want to believe it! Hearing the passing of the incredible people and the injured was terrifying. Ariana and her team did absolutely amazing and their response was outstanding. I heard what she planned to do which she offered to pay for the funeral and doing a benefit concert. Honestly, she is brave and fearless. She gathered numerous artists together on one stage and fans come from all over the world to come together to celebrate the lives of the people who sadly passed away! The way she and her team did this was brilliant as at the concert you could not sent fear anywhere it was all filled with love and braveness! When everyone sang especially Ariana you could tell the passion she was giving. She has coped so so well during this tough time! She deserves everything she is an inspiration to young teens. I love her so so much

A fan who can be found on Twitter, shared how he first learned about Ariana Grande.
“A few years passed and I later learned that she came out with an album (This sounds awkward), but her music is cheerful. Being an actress and singer are two entities, yet it was pleasant that she was not typecast.
It was natural for me to still be in her fan base since she helped me during a difficult period. As a guy in his now mid-30s, it is a bit frightening to acknowledge how I initially found out about Ariana Grande.
The prejudice and stereotypes usual pop out. Her duet with the Weeknd, definitely highlighted that she was able to break free from that teenybopper image.
Side-to-Side and Focus music videos depict her as the confident, kick-ass woman.”
He also gained more admiration for the singer after the Manchester benefit concert.
“I admired her for returning across the Atlantic. Adding “I cannot think of other entertainers that would have done what she did. imagined other people might have easily stopped touring, just briefly. Yet, she did it. She is not this diva character that the media tends to categorize her as.” He continued. “Entertainment is always a distraction from reality. She wanted that locality a moment to relax. Also, it might show that she too needed comfort or closure by returning.”
Scooter Braun (Ariana Grande’s manager) opened up about the event when he walked onto the One Love Manchester benefit concert stage.
Tumblr media
“To my friend Ariana Grande and the entire Dangerous Woman crew, myself and all of us around the world are so grateful for you for stepping up and taking action. We also want to thank the Manchester first responders and all the bystanders who are probably here tonight, who risk their lives to save others, please give a round of applause to them.”
“I also want to say, prepared words, before we introduce my friend Ariana.
And Uh, putting those words aside for a second, last night this nation was challenged were challenged and all of you were challenged and you had a decision to make if you were going to come out here tonight.
And this is so beautiful.
You guys made that decision, you guys looked fear right in the face and said “no we are Manchester,” and the world is watching.”
As you can see, Ari’s influence has gone above and beyond the normal “expectations,” of her job in entertainment.
Demi Lovato, Selena Gomez & Seth Rogen at WE Day! Yay for charity!
It’s true, celebrities have a tight and busy schedule, they have their own contracts and deadlines just as we do in life. And even though our lives are busy, some of us still get out and volunteer to make a difference.
Ari is no different than us, she seeks to make a positive impact not only with her musical talents but with her actions.
Did you know Ariana Grande also supports other causes?

Thumbnails 5/22/18
Thumbnails is a roundup of brief excerpts to introduce you to articles from other websites that we found interesting and exciting. We provide links to the original sources for you to read in their entirety.—Chaz Ebert
1.
"Elisha Christian on 'Columbus' and 'Everything Sucks!'": The Spirit Award-nominated cinematographer chats with me about his acclaimed work on Kogonada's 2017 film and this year's acclaimed Netflix series.
“[Indie Outlook:] How did you and Kogonada develop the extraordinary shot of Jin (John Cho) and Eleanor (Parker Posey), framing them in a mirror in a way that gives us a sense of their history. We feel as if we are peering into a reflection of their past.’ [Christian:] ‘That scene took place in the same inn where Jin was staying. There were only four or five guest rooms in the whole inn, and we had our pick of which room we wanted to shoot in. That location is so visually interesting — you could shoot a whole movie there. When we saw the mirrors, we knew where we wanted to place the camera, though my AC couldn’t even stand next to it to pull focus. She had to sit underneath the camera while reaching up above her head to pull focus because the space was so slim. We even had to pull everything off the sides of the camera in order to fit in that tiny area without catching it in a reflection. We saw that if John walks out and stops at a certain point after Eleanor basically kicks him out, he could turn back to her and we’d be able to frame them both in an interesting way. It was definitely a dance. I remember that we were running behind that night. It took a while to set up the shot and get it ready, and we probably shot about 7 or 8 takes of it. We had two other shots planned in the scene, but when we got the take that Kogonada wanted, he said, ‘We don’t need the other shots.’ That’s a ballsy decision, considering the length of the scene. It’s decisions like these that made the movie better.’”

"Peak superhero? Not even close: How one movie genre became the guiding myth of neoliberalism": Brilliant commentary from Salon's Keith A. Spencer.
“Obversely, this is precisely how politics functions in neoliberalism: Both Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump were presented as branded superheroes, who believed they knew what was best for us, and sought to install their elite wonks to enact their benevolent (to them) policies. There’s a relatively two-dimensional view of the world at work: there are good and bad people; they are generally born that way and seldom change. The state in neoliberalism and superhero movies is almost entirely devoted to oppression and surveillance. If the state overreaches, heroes must fix its excesses; if it fails to protect its citizenry, heroes must make up for its shortcomings. In either case, its social welfare function is invisible: because people are innately good or evil, there are no social workers or teachers or other welfare-state employees whose duties might prevent villainy (or supervillainy) through social work. Superheroes are, by definition, more powerful and more important than the state. More importantly, the superheroes’ work may save lives, but it never inherently changes the relationships of production: If the people are poor, they’re likely to stay poor. They don’t participate in redistributive politics except to attack the sort of universally detested social relationships about which there is broad consensus — for instance, slavery. Superheroes can’t and won’t save the middle class; many of them are rich anyway and stand to benefit from the kinds of inherent economic injustices that, say, Bernie Sanders or Jeremy Corbyn fight against.”
3.
"Turkey's Government Is Censoring the Movies, But the Istanbul Film Festival Is Soldiering On": According to Indiewire's Amy Nicholson.
“No one is sure what the moral rules are. The Ministry of Culture won’t write them down. At least the Hays Code in classic Hollywood had 11 clear don’ts. Specific rules can be subverted. But Turkey’s veto power is capricious and vague. Filmmakers, especially documentary filmmakers telling unflattering stories about modern Turkey, could spend years on a movie that can’t be shown. Unpredictability pressures artists to play it safe. Some hire lawyers to help them guess whether their work might be rejected, and if so, hunt for foreign producers willing to take a controlling stake as international films don’t require a certificate yet. But as Saudi Arabia opens its first movie theater in 30 years with a screening of ‘Black Panther’—imagine women who finally got the right to drive this year beholding the Dora Milaje—Turkish people are alarmed that their government, which just disrupted the last major dissenting newspaper chain, threatened people over their footage of Taksim Square, intermittently shut off YouTube and Twitter, and is poised to ban teaching evolution in schools, is making it hard to share their stories with the outside world. Over a bottle of wine, a director sighed as she pointed toward the west, ‘News comes one way.’ The impact was everywhere. ‘I can say that there are less political movies than before,’ said current festival director Kerem Ayan on a group boat trip circling the Bosporus River. ‘But cinema is very creative. Everybody finds a different way to express what they want.’”
4.
"The Résumé: The Winding, Everlasting Career of William H. Macy": Another essential interview conducted by Sam Fragoso for The Ringer.
“I had never done anything that graphic or that sexual before ‘The Cooler.’ I’d taken my clothes off, but that’s different. And it was my adorable wife who finally said, ‘When you talk about it, it sounds like you’re planning to fail. If you don’t want to do these sex scenes, you should call the director and tell him you don’t want to do them. If you do want to do them, you better start thinking about how to make them great.’ It was a fabulous wake-up call. I married well. So I started to look at the sex scenes like any other scene—as an acting exercise. What’s different at the end of the scene than at the beginning? What happened? What’s the objective? What transpired? Where’s the moment where something changed the plot even though we’re just rolling around in bed? And to Wayne’s credit, I said, ‘I can’t understand the scene. I’m having trouble here. What happens here?’ And we talked about one or two scenes and he said, “You know what, you’re right. I can’t find it either.” And he cut them. He cut the scenes. Which is sort of the essence of art, I think: If you can cut it and still tell your story, then you have to cut it. I was shy but Maria didn’t care. She said, ‘I’m an old hippie. This is nothing.’”
5.
"50 Years Ago, a White Woman Touching a Black Man on TV Caused a National Commotion": Petula Clark and Harry Belafonte chat with Vanity Fair's Donald Liebenson about the moment that erupted into an inadvertent scandal.
“For his part, Belafonte thought there had just been a technical glitch. He did not think the touch was problematic: ‘Quite the contrary,’ he says. ‘I was quite pleased. That song, if I remember, was the last thing we shot. There was an enormous sense of release that we had pulled this off without a hitch. It was one guy—Doyle Lott—who said we had to re-shoot what we had just done. We were nonplussed as to what was the problem.’ NBC, alerted to the controversy, called Binder to say the network would back him (‘That was a great phone call to get,’ he says). With that, Binder and Wolff rushed to the studio basement to confront the editor and order him to keep the take where Clark touched Belafonte’s arm—and to erase the others so they could not be used in the broadcast. Somehow—Binder doesn’t recall what did it—word of the controversy got out early, resulting in breathless pre-broadcast news coverage. ‘Incident at TV Taping Irks Belafonte,’ said a March 7 headline in ‘The New York Times.’ The article quoted a statement from White: ‘If there was any incident . . . it resulted solely from the reaction of a single individual and by no means reflects the Plymouth Division’s attitude or policy on such matters.’ Lott’s Detroit office also issued a statement: ‘I was tired. I over-reacted to the staging, not to any feeling of discrimination.’ Binder remembers hearing that Belafonte was about to tell America to boycott Plymouth on ‘The Tonight Show’; he called the singer to tell him it wasn’t the car company’s fault, and reminded Belafonte of his conversation with White. On March 10, the ‘Times’ reported that Lott had been ‘relieved of his responsibilities.’”

As I have mentioned before, there are four bands that I consider my top favorites and I would be honored for a chance to speak with them. These bands are: MONA, The 1975, The Kooks and Taking Back Sunday. Fortunately I’ve had the pleasure of having a chat with the lead singer of one of them, the always talented Nick Brown from MONA. This honestly was one of the best experiences I’ve had, speaking with someone I always listen to and getting a sneak peak into how inspiration works for him was truly enlightening.
Interview with Nick Brown from Mona
Before to the questions there was the typical “Hi, how are you” and a showcase of my excitement since I was interviewing one of the most talented singer/songwriters in the indie music scene.
[su_quote cite=”Nick Brown from MONA”]…I guarantee you the next U2 has already been dropped from their label and I guarantee you the next Michael Jackson is probably working at a Starbucks…[/su_quote]
Here we go…
It’s been a while since you guys made an album, it’s been over two years from the last record, right?
Nick: Yeah, a little bit over two years and we wanted to take time since there was a member change (a member left and we added  two guys) and we were off of that record deal, so we were figuring out and redefining our philosophies to understand why we wanted to do music, how we wanted to do it and what were we doing. Sometimes you just can’t rush that process, I mean let alone the writing  and recording process can bring their own adventure and journey. We had done the major label thing and we’ve seen a lot of things done wrong and a lot of things that we despise about the industry and about most of the people in the industry. We were trying to figure out how not to be that and we were doing the equivalent of soul searching and it took us a little bit.
It’s good to hear that the reason behind it and what happened allowed you guys to come up with an amazing new record. It’s good to hear that the spirit that I always tell my friends is intact- MONA is music that is made for everyone, it’s middle-class rock (not quality because they are amazing, but the societal structure for people) and anyone can relate to it.
Nick: I am white trash man, I grew up in a trailer park and I like nice things now but you nailed it on the head. My entire goal in life is accessibility and I want everyone. I think if it’s good it should be for everyone and I just don’t believe that way about music, I believe that way about health care, I believe that way about a lot of things. I love accessibility and I love the common man coming out on top. I love that you said it like that.
(I spoke about my rotation of albums on my car – which is top secret info, well not really but hey…tell you later)
Right now you guys are doing everything in an independent record label, right?
Nick: Yes, it’s a label called Bright Antenna and they are based in the San Francisco Area. But don’t let that word independent fool you, it’s a lot of people with a lot of ambition. It’s definitely a hands on passionate approach as oppose to some of the sterile bullshit that we had to deal with at the major label.
(We spoke about my love of independent labels and how they don’t represent small but actually a lot of passion plus spoke about another project I’m on which you will start seeing more out here as well)
Music should connect with the people and not with their pockets.
Nick: Everything should resonate with the reason that the artist wants it to do and not with what the people pulling the strings want. I understand that you have to get paid and people have to eat, but when it’s motivated by the wrong thing you are already in trouble and you know…every musician is lying when they say they don’t care about making money because obviously they want to pay the bills, but that does not have to be the sole motivation of why you are making music. There’s a lot of dangers and people that have convoluted dreams, you have to figure it out and you want to give it to the people in a pure form. It’s the same thing as like food in America, we preserve it by chemicals, not everything should be preserved as long as we are preserving them. Let’s try the healthiest and purest form to get it out there, that’s what we try to do with the tunes.
[su_quote cite=”Nick Brown from MONA”]We want to provoke people to feel…[/su_quote]
Sometimes we just everything to last longer; our face, our skin, our youth and I just say hey let it flow, it has path that it needs to take. You don’t need to put the break on it always, just let it flow. Sometimes it can grow to something beautiful.
Nick: Yeah, if it was up to me I would stop all forms of recording so that you could have always listen to musicians live, but there’s our money problem because then people would have to pay to come a watch the shows. But you know, someone would try to find a way to monopolize that system as well unfortunately.
In the current album, what experiences and stories inspired In The Middle EP?
Nick: Mmm … I am not a very good story-teller, as dumb as it sounds I am more of an emotionalist. Sometimes I just write an emotion and I think that In The Middle was a transition time for us both inside and outside the band. I mean geographically it was a transition and a lot of bands don’t make it to the other side of that transition period with a body of work which is summing that up. Out of this six songs we have more songs that are written and ready to go but this six songs embodied that feeling of transition. I could go song by song and tell you what emotion is in there, but that’s for me as a writer. Also it has been kinda great to see everyone’s response. It’s not like everyone is saying “I love In the Middle” but everyone has their own favorite and that to me shows me we are doing a good job. Because like we talked about in the beginning of the conversation, there’s accessibility there and a little something for everybody.
It’s always good to have and actually the name fits what you are talking about, about being in that grey area in which you don’t know where you are going, where you are at or what you need to do. It’s actually a great name.
Nick: It definitely kinda summed up our heads and our hearts for the last two and half years.
I am glad to hear you guys again, to hear that music again. Because I was looking and looking and couldn’t find something new and I was telling myself that you guys were probably working on something.
Nick: Yeah, it’s a dark world out there and the music industry is even darker. So sometimes the roads for artists  to get their stuff released is a little bit more evil and treacherous than what the average listener knows. I don’t want to be that cliche of like a dude in a band that’s bashing the industry but unfortunately that cliche of the industry being evil is true. And more and more nowadays, artists don’t care about preserving anything, they just want to get paid. So you have more sellouts now in the industry than any time in history controlled by the industry that only wants sellouts. So when you have something to say that actually means something, there’s a battle that becomes way more intense than it should. The fact that we even made it to make this release is a victory.
Actually I always try to push artists that even if I don’t accept to write about them to keep their originality. They might not connect with me but I appreciate the fight and the uniqueness because it stands out. Sometimes they just need to work on lyrics or some technical issues within the track or something. Because it’s not about people down but pushing them to keep on working because they are getting there.
Nick: Historically with major record label deals there’s people that have 9,7,5 albums. Even in the early 2000’s bands like Cage the Elephant and Kings of Leon, they were starting in a different time and they had 5, 7, 4 albums to prove themselves. So there’s a developmental period that doesn’t exist anymore, if people  come out with their first body of work and if it’s not loved immediately you are done and that’s wrong. It’s not the way that it was and some of these bands that everyone loves, you would have never heard of Bruce Springsteen or some of these people if the had not had time to develop. These huge bands that around now probably we would have never had the possibility to enjoy if the industry was the way it is now. The people that do break through, it’s kind off maddening to see what gets big and what doesn’t, because there’s a lot of talent and voices out there  not being heard.
That is so true, sometimes I heard the small guys that send me music and they blow me away. There are guys that have that wow factor and I wonder why they are not on radio and I’ve even told some of them this.
Nick: I guarantee you we have already slapped the next Bod Dylan in the face, I guarantee you the next U2 has already been dropped from their label and I guarantee you the next Michael Jackson is probably working at a Starbucks, because that’s what the music industry does to people now.
As an artist it makes you fight that much harder and you know we have no intention of trying to be the biggest band in the world or trying to be rich and famous. When we had to deal with the hype of the first time around we saw how comical and carnivore the good press and the bad press can be. It really is about doing great work that you believe in and I think that humans like that. That’s why we are on the planet and that’s who we are doing music for, humans and not an industry nor press or any of it. We connect with people and that’s what keeps us going.
That is so true, even I as a writer try to keep the website my voice, keep it me and I mean it might not be like “I would buy this dude if he wrote a book” but at least I get to feel like I am talking to the reader and letting them know about a new great band or singer or simply a track and letting them know why I like it. If you like it great and if you don’t it’s still great.
Nick: We now have blogs like yourself that we wouldn’t have had back in the day. So we do get some honest opinions out there. You always have to separate the good from the bad, but there’s so much of both now and sometimes it’s hard to get to it.
I personally prefer to not waste my time of writing negativity because I am a one man team. The website might look like I have a few guys, but no unfortunately. I try to give it my best to ensure that Wolf in a Suit is a good home for music. You know it’s just me so why waste my time about writing how I don’t like something or something negative when if I like something I can be passionate about my writing.
Nick: Exactly. Mother Theresa once said she would never go to an anti rally of anything, because we should always be positive. There’s a lot to learn and apply in all areas with that mentality and you know, good for you man.
The last question…the one I always ask: What’s the mantra and/or philosophy behind MONA?
Nick: That’s a great question. I mean what I think of the band is personal to me and probably not all five members feel the same, but I know that we push on a general motto: We want to provoke people to feel. And it the day in age of left vs right, white vs black, Pepsi vs Coca-Cola we don’t want to push brands and we don’t want to push sides. It’s being very preachy without a message. I am not going to give you something to believe, I am not going to tell you what to believe but I am going to encourage you to believe in something. I am going to push and I am going to provoke and we want you to have feelings but we are not going to tell you what to feel or what to do. I don’t feel it’s an artist job to tell people to go vote, I disagree with that. A lot people use their platform to kinda try to push their own opinions. I don’t give a shit about my opinions, I want you to come to your opinion by yourself and if you do that I want to do it with passion and do it with belief. We don’t care what you feel as long as you are feeling as long as you are alive. We want to promote unity and accessibility and not draw lines in the sand.
We don’t like apathy, we are not ok with it. Apathy is our greatest enemy.
(As the interview ended I thanked Nick for his time and for this amazing chance to interview the lead singer of one of my favorite bands, MONA)
BTW-This is the track that started the love for this band:
Interview with Nick Brown from Mona As I have mentioned before, there are four bands that I consider my top favorites and I would be honored for a chance to speak with them.
