☕️ Opinion on fanfiction, in general? Good or bad? Can/should it be considered art?
i'm assuming this is the same anon (sorry i didn't answer the other one sooner) and no it's not silly! i love fanfic i read it all the time and of course i think people who write it can be talented, why couldn't they be (i don't think anyone says they aren't).... but like i wouldn't say most fanfic writers are skilled writers because that would be untrue 🥴 don't let that get you down tho there is value in connecting with others through fan creations and you can only improve at stuff by practicing and writing is writing so it's practice so it's good. and there's always someone out there who would enjoy reading it
and about whether fanfic is good or bad and whether it's art, that's almost like asking if movies are good or bad and if they're art, i don't think one should ever condemn an entire form of media or even a genre?? like the question barely makes sense to me and i wonder who it even matters to, whether we call fanfic 'good' or 'art' or not.. if "ordinary" people are capable of producing unique and complex pieces of writing then that writing can technically fall under 'fanfiction'.. of course...there's nothing that sets published writing/writers apart from people writing stories for fun and for their friends (maybe featuring their favorite characters), like ontologically
also everything is art. but, different people have different concepts of art, since art doesn't have one definition (duh gyshcy).. someone might only call something a piece of art if the level of intentionality and complexity that they need has been met and it's earned that title or if it matches the. other aspects of their understanding of 'art' (there are different sides to every debate about art - to some, it's about beauty for beauty's sake, to others it's about meaning. and so on)
basically i'm not convinced there is any one quality or set of qualities that makes good art, or even that there's a definition that covers all activities and their products that we call art. but maybe if i was an aesthetics major i would see this differently
#if i studied aesthetics i bet i would see this less liberally lol#anyway thanks for the question<33 what do you think anon‚ did u ask this in response to anything you saw on the internet#or just because 😳#ask
