the way hyperbolic suicide jokes have become so common is really frustrating in part because now when i try to explain that i can’t just force myself to interact with people in spite of my issues with social interaction because even the tiniest thing going wrong could make me want to kill myself so it’s literally not safe for me to “fake it til i make it,” the response i get is “yeah, sometimes when i get something wrong in a social interaction i feel like i should just go kill myself, but you just have to do it anyway and power through that” in this super lighthearted tone.

and i don’t know how to explain that no, i mean those situations literally make me actively suicidal and i’ve almost crashed my car multiple times in the past few months because of conversations i thought i might have messed up. because the thing is, people do understand the difference between those jokes and actual active suicidality, but because they don’t see a simple conversation as a big enough deal to warrant that kind of response, they automatically assume i must be speaking hyperbolically like they would be if they said that.

i’ve spent so much time afraid of what i might do to myself when the slightest thing inevitably goes wrong and i can’t seem to get anyone to take that seriously because all they hear when i talk about it is an exaggeration of standard social anxiety at best and a funny joke at worst. and sometimes, it isn’t that they don’t care enough to listen or that they don’t want to take me seriously; they’re just so used to hearing those words used for effect that the thought that i could be speaking literally doesn’t even cross their mind.

2. What color and style is your hair?: Dark brown, long(ish) and rather wild.

6. What is your fashion style?: A year ago, I decided to isolate myself from the world (especially, the humans). Being so, I moved to a farm on a valley, lost in a place so remote that a lot of people ask me if I even have electricity here. I did that to cure a severe depression and to reignite my writing sparkle... but, a year later, I am on the verge of suicide with zero lines written since I moved. I lost my contact with Humanity, I no longer see neither the good nor the bad side of human species. I am a shadow of what I used to be - I am a shadow of a being, I became a creature. Being so, I lost any fashion/style sense at all - but that is just until I get out of this horrible pit with wonderful views.

7. Full name: You will have to kill me to know that. But since none of you is a shooter, you'll have to call me Miguel, just Miguel.

8. When were you born?: This body was born a long time ago (before some of you did), but my soul may be even older - much, much older. 

9. Where are you from and where do you live now? Actually, I was born in Lisbon and, after many unfortunate events, I ended up in a remote place in Upper Alentejo that few even know where it is - it's just a rural hamlet/place between Portugal and Spain. But soon, I shall be moving to some other place and I have no idea where I am going - and, somehow, that is strangely exciting. I hardly know where I am and I only know that I must go.

10. What school do you go to?: The FSHC of the Algarve University. Yes, college is in Faro and I live 350 km away from it.

11. What kind of student are you? One that is postponing all deadlines regarding his thesis, even if I have all the tools and the knowledge (and research) to do a good job. What is blocking me? Depression.

12. Do you like school? I liked some places where I studied and hated others. But I really like the Algarve University, I must admit. The same cannot be said about my previous college, ISCTE.

13. What are your favorite school subjects? Any subject can be either interesting or boring - basically, all depends on the teachers. During my masters course (in History and Heritage, btw), all seven subjects/lectures were truly amazing, fascinating, deeply challenging and that says a lot about my professors.

14. Favorite TV shows: What is a TV?

15. Favorite movies: If I had to choose just one, it would be "The Crow" - the original one, the one with Brandon Lee and with The Cure on the soundtrack.

16. Favorite books?: Again, if I have to choose just one, it has to be "Wuthering Heights", for being, basically, an epiphany for me.

17. Favorite pastime: I have no free time, to be honest. Being depressed means that I have a small amount of energy for all my tasks and that energy is clearly insufficient. Being so, when I am not just on my bed, agonizing, I am doing less stuff than I should and that means there is hardly any time left for hobbies. But even if I had time, depression would steal any pleasure I could have with them.

18. Do you have any regrets? I regret the last fifty years of my life (and I didn't live fifty years yet). I regret being born. And I may regret these two last sentences.

20. Would you like to get married someday? Is there anyone insane to the point of marrying me? Even those who are addicted to pain, misery and suffering think that marrying me is beyond all the agony they can endure.

23: Do you like shopping? Hum... not really, although sometimes it can be therapeutic - when you go shopping, you try to please and improve yourself and, for someone with depression and a low self-esteem, that can be important. But since there is no mall around where I live…

24: What countries have you visited? Portugal and Spain do not count for this list and Morocco must be out of it as well, since I visited it when my mother was pregnant. Being so, I've been in France, Italy, United Kingdom, Germany, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, Malta, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Cape Verde, Tunisia and my beloved Egypt.

25. What’s the scariest nightmare you’ve ever had? Someone invented a way of making the ones who already went to greener pastures come back for a while and I decided to use that machine to make my grandfather return for a while. For a week, I had my grandfather again, although it was a rather ill, vaguely percipient and weak version of him - but I remained by his side all the time, absorbing every second of those extra days with him that were given me by science. Once the miraculous week was over, I realized I had to feel the devastating pain of letting him go again... but I didn't want to, I wasn’t ready to lose my grandpa once again, after losing him in 2004. But there was someone who, wisely, convinced me that I should let my grandfather rest, for he really needed to go, to go forever: my father. By the time I had this dream, my father had already passed as well - so, there I was, surrounded by those who are just a memory in the world of the living. This may not be scary… but, by the gods, it was one of the most painful sensations I had in my life, since it triggered me all the feelings, all the despair, all the pain of loss.

26. Do you have any enemies? I am my own enemy. I am the one who is actively trying to find ways of killing myself and I fear I may end up being successful.

27. Do you have a s/o?: That's the typical question of that unpleasant old aunt, that is always trying to do her best to make you feel like crap. Mind your own business, Aunt Doris.

My Introduction to Thru-hiking

For one glorious week of my life this past April, I had exactly one amazing job: hiking. 

Me at the top of the bizarrely dreaded Devil’s Staircase, between Glencoe and Kinlochleven. Taken by my awesome English buddy who hiked with me for a couple of days.

Every day I got up, ate a Cliff Bar or two while writing in my leather bound journal, checked my water, packed up camp, and set off hiking along the West Highland Way, Scotland’s oldest and first long distance trail, a 154.5 kilometre/96 mile stretch which links Milngavie (pronounced ‘Mulguy,’) with Fort William. With aspirations of someday hiking the far longer Pacific Crest Trail (4,265 km/2,650 miles,) but with a travel itch which needed scratching, I set out to hike the longest trail which I had ever encountered. The fact that I did the majority of it solo is unremarkable - most thru-hikers hike by themselves, after all - but for me personally it was remarkable just because it was my first time hiking that kind of distance. In the end, I would prove that I am fully capable of doing it, albeit with proper gear and layers - of which, despite my months of planning and theorizing, I didn’t quite have. (I’m glad for this though, because now I know better on a lot of things.)

So, what was it like? You’re probably imagining that it was some sublime experience for me, and in many ways, it absolutely was, and I will say here that the thru-hiking bug has bitten me hard, but much of it wasn’t so sweet. In fact, I spent a lot of my hike feeling either bitter or angsty - the amount of swearwords in my journal attest to this. The problem is, I came to this hike from months of intensely social retail work, and as an introvert, I needed a break, time to be by myself, but on the busy West Highland way, solitary, I was not - which was actually okay, but a lot of the interactions I had with other hikers really got my goat. For example, random fellow hikers had a very frustrating habit of asking whether or not I was okay - this, to me, got very tiring. Quote my journal: “...unless I am visibly bleeding out, limping, or my leg is obviously broken, I am okay!” 

I think people tended to ask this due to my tendency to double over to shift my incorrectly fitting (stupidly) heavy pack up off of my shoulders to give my skeleton a break every few minutes (especially if I was hiking uphill. I was like a runaway freight train going downhill.) It also aggravated me when people expressed amazement at my hiking by myself, or, gasp, hiking by myself as a female - heaven forbid! (Seriously, stop. There is nothing amazing about being a solo female hiker. Nothing.) I should also note that I am socially inept, to the point where I am confused when people express care for me. I am gratefully baffled for all the people who asked if I was alright, even if their concern bewildered me completely. From the bottom of my socially obtuse heart, thank you.

My trail name is Wolf (a name which I received last year backpacking in Garibaldi,) - and I’m Canadian - so these patches adorned my pack to tell my fellow hikers who I was.

So, I was a bit of an angry hiker. Due to various issues, I entertained a few hours over the course of the trail (primarily after Tyndrum and the dreaded layering mishap,) of thinking of quitting too, but I bullied myself out of that bullshit pretty fast. I was determined to hike the trail, and I knew that I’d never forgive myself if I failed. This might sound extreme, but consider that the West Highland Way is only 154.5 kilometres/96 miles long - that’s small change compared to longer hikes out there like the vast Appalachian Trail. I wouldn’t have felt like I had accomplished anything if I had bailed on the Way, and I certainly wouldn’t have felt worthy of my hiking boots. Had I bailed after several hundred kilometres of, say, the Pacific Crest Trail, I would have been cool with it - after all, that would have been several hundred more kilometres than I had ever hiked before - but the Way is tiny in comparison.

I couldn’t give up, so I didn’t.

Physically, I didn’t care that I was filthy, that I probably stunk (I have an exceptionally poor sense of smell, which is a benefit when living with one’s own hiker stink,) or even really that my feet were a mess. (Okay, I cared about that a lot - but there was little that I could do about it except try thru-hiker tricks which I’d read about. I did my best, and my feet survived the trail just fine. Good job, feet. I did take a grim pride in lancing my blisters, I will admit.) 

My glorious noble feet, which I recently learned thanks to my experience on the Way are allergic to their own sweat. I feel special. (Also some mud.)

I didn’t care that I didn’t take a shower for the whole trail - I could care less about those normally anyway. The idea of showering then putting back on my filthy hiking gear utterly repulsed me, so I was far happier remaining a grungy wild thing. Really, the only thing which actually repulsed me were ticks - so I never did check behind my ears for them; the little bastards were probably there, but there was nothing that I could do about them, so I preferred just not knowing about their existence on my body unless they were somewhere I could see/reach. Of midges, I never encountered them until I was in Fort William, after my time on the trail was over.

It was only alongside the magnificent Caledonian Canal in Corpach near Fort William that I ever encountered the dreaded Scottish midges, and there were only a few of them.

Walking the Way and visiting Scotland is one of the best things that I have ever done, but it wasn’t enough. I need more adventure, more wilderness, and more solitude. While at this time I’m not sure whether I would hike the Pacific Crest Trail thanks to my time on the Way, I still dream of the experience, and I dream of tackling another thru-hike, albeit with proper gear and a lighter pack. I made several dumb mistakes with my pack - using one which didn’t fit right (not that I entirely knew this going in,) carrying too much food, carrying too much water and carrying too many layers of clothing. I learned a lot about my gear over the seven days I took to hike the trail, knowledge which I will apply to my next great adventure. Someday I’ll get my pack right, the way that I want it, but for now, I’m just grateful to have what I have learned from this trip. 

Even though I was a (albeit silent,) grumpypants I’m intensely grateful for the wonderful people who I met, and the landscapes I saw, and the animals - even those damned ticks. They made my adventure richer, even if I was afraid of them and absolutely detested ripping them out of my skin (along with parts of said flesh. I became very handy with my tweezers.) I learned so much in Scotland, and I can’t wait to go again someday - although next time, I do think that I’ll perhaps just be a regular tourist/day hiker. There’s a lot of stuff which I didn’t get to see because the Way took up the majority of my two week vacation, so next time I’ll indulge in that.

Me conquering Arthur’s Seat in Holyrood Park in Edinburgh was probably one of my favourite sightseeing stops in Scotland. Holyrood Park itself is probably my favourite urban park in the entire world - Stanley Park in Vancouver, eat your heart out!

Pretty much everyone sometime

This is the story of my first heartbreak that isn’t leaving my head even after nearly a year later and led me to depression.

I was 16. I was 15 when I met this boy on an app called Kiwi. It was designed to ask questions and get answers and stuff like that and I was famous on it. I would love to expose this asshole to the world, but I’m not like that. Those who know him know that that is his gamertag. I won’t expose his real name but I already did expose his @, soooooo… If you’ll play against a JWonderstellar one day, please kill him as often as possible. Now here’s the story.

We chatted for a while on Kiwi. I’m a pretty nice person with a good humour and we were having fun just talking. He then asked me for his number and we were talking on WhatsApp. Now, sounds okay. Problem? Boy is from Switzerland and I am from Luxembourg. 400 km. Not a chance we would see each other in the close future. Still, on the 11th of March 2016 he asked me to be his girlfriend. Over text of course, cause I was in school and we couldn’t call each other. I said yes because I didn’t see the problem. We were calling each other nearly every evening until one of us fell asleep. We skyped as often as we could. We talked about everything. I fell hard. We had a lot of arguments but we always got back on track.

Now here’s the thing. I was overweight. Not too much, but you could definetely see it. BMI of 27. He knew this. We talked a lot about me. He wrote me texts that must’ve taken him hours because they were so long. He built me up. I had walls up that he destroyed. I had my heart protected but he stole it. I sent him my favourite sweater for him to know how I smell because we had to wait until Christmas to see each other because our holidays were different. And there was literally no chance for us to see each other and kiss and stuff in person. Yes sex too. Not a thing. I was a virgin. SUPRISE I still am. He built a fundament of trust in me that made it possible for me to let him in and love him even though I only knew him from chat and skype.

I still fell in love. I fell in love with the boy that made me happy. We had a future. But then he said a stupid, stupid thing. He said “You know, I don’t like your body the way I always told you.”

Crash. Burning world. Sirens and stuff.

I was like “what”.

He immediately apologized. But I wanted to know what he meant with this. He then kind of confirmed his statement and when I pointed it out he was like “Oh shit, I’m sorry” and he did this 5 or 6 times. I thought about what to do for 2 days.

The problem with this statement is, that it ruined the fundament my love and my trust towards him was built on. With the fundament blowing up, everything was kind of hanging loose, not belonging anywhere. The love was still there, because as I said we had a future and he was serious husband material until the 24th of November 2016. I could have loved him until I died but I had to let go. My heart was broken and shattered in a million of peaces. The trust was gone. I asked him to delete every bodypicture he got from me. With or without clothes. I broke up with him per voice memo on the 26th of November 2016. I was trying to call him but he knew what was coming and was crying really hard so he ignored it. I tried to make it as personal as possible so I made a voice memo. I didn’t eat after that. I didn’t talk much. We still called each other 2 times after that. I then cried very much. I cried for 2 or 3 weeks straight every evening. We stopped talking after a while. Then, for Christmas, he wrote me “I would be there with you now.”. I hadn’t blocked him because we didn’t wrote each other anymore, why would I block him if I could just put the chat in the archive and wouldn’t have to see it again. I responded with “Shit happens.” I was over the sadness. What comes after the sadness is the anger.

I was angry at him for having done this to me. Telling me he loved my body only to announce that it was a lie for 8. straight. months. Someday in February I was over him. Little did I know it didn’t end there. Everytime something happened that remind me of him, reading the world Switzerland, or his name or hearing the names of the games he liked to play (Battlefield, Call of Duty and Black Ops 3, you know what to do;)) or seeing someone that looked like him, my mood dropped. Not because I was missing him. Hell nah. Uh uh. Because it reminded me of my still broken trust.

I haven’t been able do repare my heart or my trust to 60 %. He was the first one I committed to, so I was broken pretty badly. Still am. I had a date in January sometime. I friendzoned the guy. I wasn’t ready. In february, an old friend of mine and I were talking when he asked me to come visit him because he just left the hospital and was at home. We then kinda talked each other into feelings and stuff, 2 days after my visit at his home, we decided to call it quits because we just won’t be working. To this day, my trust had been repared a little bit. It broke apart after this mutual decision. I kinda clinged on the thought to having found someone that could love me even though I put on 20 additional kg because of the heartbreak. Well, shit happens.

Then a few moths later, I got to talk to a guy called Tom. He was really nice and I enjoyed talking to him. We met up and were going for a walk, only talking, no touching, no kissing. We then continued talking and stuff and I had hopes that this could be it. It was all so good and it was really nice and stuff and we were talking everyday. Until one day, JUST LIKE THAT, he wrote “I’m sorry, I won’t come to our date tomorrow. I’m not ready for a relationship.” It was a punch in the face. I didn’t know what I had done. I replied with “Who said I am ready. But it doesn’t matter, this is your decision and I respect that. It was nice meeting you :)” He responded with “Nice meeting you too :)”. That’s the story of Tom. The 2nd person I kinda ruined things without knowing how.

Probably because I liked the thought of having someone that I made everything move pretty quickly. I don’t know.

After Tom I pulled out of the dating world. I didn’t go out, I was at home watching series. I then met Timo, on the same app I met Tom. I’m still talking to Timo now after a month and we met up and cuddled and it was really cute.

Now here’s the thing. I have no idea how to tell Timo that I am depressed. That I sometimes hurt myself to cope with my life. That I tried to kill myself once. All of this since Dezember 2016 until now.

I like him, he deserves the truth. He hasn’t seen the wound on my wrist yet (Story in the post about Auschwitz) and if he does, I won’t tell him what is going on. I’ll tell him when I’m sure he won’t leave me. I can’t cope with another person that leaves. I need him. No, wrong. I need someone to love. That loves me back. (Update: He left me too) Until then I’ll be here in my dark whole in a bad mood every evening and depressing thoughts every day.

In the post about Auschwitz, I wrote that the third night was hard for me because I cried, but not because of Auschwitz. I realized that there was a boy with us that looked just like JWonderstellar. Once again, I have been reminded of the situation he put me in. My mood sunk, and because I already had this depression thingy, I started crying. I never talked to this boy and avoided him pretty much all the time, but it led to the point where I had to tell someone what was going on. Now, all of my friends knew what was going on between JWonderstellar and me, but only my closest friends knew what was going on later on. Yet nobody knew about the wounds and the depression and the suicide attempt. I had to tell somebody cause I was going crazy. I told Hugo and it was all okay for 2 seconds.

After that I still cried but at least I could tell him and when he could he would come and hug me. I could cry in his arms and wet his sweatshirt and it was all okay. For 2 seconds.

And that’s how a single person that I committed everything to ruined my life.

I thought all my fics were gone forever, but I found my flash drive with all of them on it!! So I’m going to re post a few of them, and if you’ve read them before, don’t worry, I didn’t steal them! He sat skulking around the house like he always did. I mean, what more was there to do around the French Quarter? The quarrel with the witches was over, most of his siblings were hiding or, like his recent love interest, dead. And his brothers didn’t really approve of him ripping humans anymore, so honestly, why the hell did he stay here?

He absentmindedly rubbed his fingers across the small letters etched across the side of his wrist while he walked into the study where his brother, Klaus, was adding in the final intimate details to a painting that he had been painting for the last few weeks.

“It’s not nice to sneak up on people, brother.” Klaus mused, his face close to the canvas.

“Well I’m bored. Entertain me, before I dagger myself.” Kol jokingly motioned his hands toward his chest, pretending to actually dagger himself.

“Ah, yes, well that would certainly make for quality entertainment, now wouldn’t it?” his brother laughed, setting his supplies down and turning to face him. “It has been a hot second since anything exciting has happened, though..”

“I agree,” Kol eagerly approached his brother, “so what will it be? Shall we throw a ball? Go on a lavish vacation? How about we pop down to the pub and have a drink or two from some of the locals?” he plopped onto the nearest chair, a smirk on his face as he crossed one leg over the other. Klaus shot him an annoyed look.

“Kol, you know that we can’t do that. We’re laying low. After everything that’s happened since I’ve arrived here, let alone since you’ve come back, we need not draw any more attention to ourselves.” He turned back to his canvas. “But-“

“But?” Kol pipped, his eyebrow raising.

“It has been an awfully long time since you and I have gotten drinks together, hasn’t it?” Klaus smirked.

“Sounds like first rounds on you, brother!” Kol grinned.

“So, tell me why you’ve brought me to the smallest club in the city.” he was, sad to say, still a bit bored. Sure, it was a decent club with nice music and the drinks were tasty, but at the same time it was only one story and was packed even though there were only about 100 or so people there. Sure, the place looked brand-spanking-new and the atmosphere was exciting. But he liked bigger clubs with more people, louder music, where things go unnoticed. Things like drinking some blood from a few intoxicated patrons in between his drinks.

“Oh, come on now, Kol. I know you’ll love it here. Why don’t you go out and ‘bust a move’, make an ass of yourself for a bit.” Klaus laughed as he sipped from his glass, eyes skimming the crowd. The main lights were a pink-ish color, with blues, greens, and other colors swirling all around in different patterns and designs. Kol rolled his eyes, staring towards the door thinking about how fast he could get out of there and back in the comfort of his room. Klaus sat his drink down and rolled his eyes toward Kol. “Okay, No-Fun Nancy, how about we play a little drinking game?”

“I’m listening…”

“Let’s confess some of the sins, pranks, and wrong doings we’ve done to each other over the years. A shot per confession? Let’s see if either of us ends up surprised.”

“Well, good thing I came prepared to drink the place dry, isn’t it?” smiled Kol, ready to reminisce some very old memories with his older brother. The bartender brought over a round of about ten shots, five for each of them to start. Klaus reached first.

“Okay, I’m oldest therefore I’ll start us off.” He wiggled his eyebrows. “So, back in the day, when we were in London, ya know, for the fourth or fifth time around, I was the one who kept making Rebekah’s little boy toys disappear.” He tried to suppress a smile before downing the shot.

“What! She blamed me for that, you wank! I took several beatings because she thought that I was scaring them off just to spite her!” Kol exclaimed. Rebekah had tried to find love again while they had been living in London, and unfortunately, boyfriend after boyfriend after boyfriend came up missing after a few weeks. She blamed Kol for it since he was the one to always give the men a hard time, and she had always thought that Kol had scared them far, far away.

“Well, it would’ve been a bit too out of character for me to just scare them off, don’t you think?” Klaus laughed.

“Oh, you twat.” Kol reached for his shot, a grin on his face. “Alright, so, my turn I guess. Well, do you remember when we traveled to Italy to retrace some of the many the footsteps of that doppelgänger that got the best of you?”

“If this is going in the direction I think it’s going, Kol-“

“Hey! Let me finish! Anyways….”

They went through their first round of shots and were on the second to last on the second round. Both were a bit tipsy, red faced, and grinning ear to ear. Klaus reached for his shot glass while Kol erupted with laughter.

“Alright, you now know how I tricked the red head into thinking Finn was alive and eluding her, now, your turn!” Kol wiped away a tear from his eyes from laughing so much.

“Right, right, okay! Well this one is a rare occurrence where I got Elijah-“ Klaus started, but froze squinting his eyes in concentration. Kol raised an eyebrow but waited. “Changing my confession, brother. Do you remember a certain little settler a few hundred years back? What was her name…..”

“Y/N?” Kol answered a little too quickly. He squirmed a bit in his chair, he wasn’t expecting to hear that name pop up.

“Ahh, yes. Such a pretty name, wasn’t it?” Klaus dismissed. “Well, I must admit, I may have had a small part to play in your little goodbye…” Kol’s breath had hitched, thinking all the way back to what he had tried to forget in all the years since.

Y/N came over to the Americas when the colonies started to push westward. Gorgeous, sweet, Y/N. He remembers the first time he saw those piercing y/e/c eyes. She was carrying a basket of clothes to hang to dry out in the field behind where her house was, and he happened to be out for a little lunch when he stumbled upon her. Thinking he would have some fun with her before his main course, he ran up behind her and spooked her, causing her to scream and drop the basket. Right as he was about to lunge for her, she glanced up at him at him and something about her caused him to pause.

“My goodness! Where did you come from!” she giggled. “I apologize if I’m the one who ran into you, I’m just very thoughtful today and may not have been paying attention. I’m Y/N, Mr…..?” she held her hand out for him to shake, and that’s when he saw the little letters on the side of her wrist: KM. He had no idea how to process this gorgeous woman in front of him, let alone the fact that this could be his soulmate.

“Ah, yes, uh,” he coughed, “Mikaelson. Kol Mikaelson. Sorry, I, uh, was running to find my brothers and I just, um, ran into you.” She smiled the most beautiful smile he had ever seen and giggled a bit before bending down to pick the damp clothes from the ground.

“Ah! Well I do hope that you find them!” she said, giving him a sideways glance probably thinking that he was about to be on his way. He stood frozen for a few more seconds before reaching down to help her gather up the clothes.

“Eh, they’ll be fine wherever they went. Let me help you with these, I’m terribly sorry about spilling your clothes. I’ll even wash them again if they need it!” he grinned at her. And that was the first day he can remember his heart trying to come out of his chest.

“Wha- what do you mean? Her father told me that she and her mother died of the fever…” he trailed off.

“Well… I mean. Yes and no.” Klaus exaggerated. “You see….. Her mother was ill and she refused to leave her side, and you had decided to go on that little ‘hunting trip’ with Elijah, and I was a bit bored. I had been a little curious as to why you had become so infatuated with the girl and decided to-“

“Niklaus!” Kol growled, hands gripping his chair as hard as possible without completely cracking it.

“Let me continue, brother!” snapped Klaus, throwing his head back afterward as he gulped down the shot. “Where was I? Ah! Yes, see, she had refused to leave her mother’s bedside as she was so, so sure it was mommy’s last few days. And since you were gone she took to temporarily confiding in me. Cut to the chase, after a few days of consoling her annoying woes I told her I could help her mother. That I was a witch.” Kol’s grip started to make indents in the chair as he squeezed down harder.

“Niklaus you tell me right now! Did you kill them?!” spat Kol, anger starting to boil inside of him. This was the first woman he had ever fallen for, the first woman he had ever loved. And his brother spoiled that… He felt that it was different than with the others. Rebekah never truly loved any of the men she was with, and she never knew them for long before they either fled or got killed. And the whole ordeal with Sage, Finn wasn’t really dead, so sending her on a wild goose chase for a few years wasn’t killing their chance at love, it was just a silly little prank. But this…. This was the woman who had seen Kol for who he really was, the sensitive man who acted out to get a laugh out of anyone near. She was the woman that he had someday hoped to not only marry, but be with for the rest of his existence. She had never harmed anyone in her life, and he doubted that she ever would have. Her heart was too big, and he had absolutely adored that..

She laughed that beautiful laugh that he loved so much. They were in the loft of her family’s barn, a night of passion almost over. Her hair was down and her night gown lay a few yards away from them, tossed aside carelessly next to his clothes. They were intertwined on top of the hay.

“Shh! If your father hears us he’ll come out here and have our heads!” he laughed, his mouth right next to her ear.

“How can I be silent, Kol! This is the best night of my life, with the love of my life!” she cupped his face, bringing his forehead to hers.

“You say that every night. And if you want to keep having an ‘every night’, you’ll hush!” he teased, tickling her and sending her into a fit of giggles. He loved her so much, and could stay like this forever. There were a few moments of silence where he stayed gazing at her before pulling her in for a kiss.

“I’m very glad you ran into me..” blushed Y/N after they pulled apart. “If we hadn’t have met, I don’t know what I would have done...”

“Oh, nonsense. Some other lad would’ve swooped in and courted you! You’re the most amazing woman that I have ever met, trust me.” He assured her, pushing a stray hair behind her ear. “And besides, we would have met another way, I know it. We were meant to be lovers.” He grabber her wrist and kissed the spot with his initials. She traced her own initials that were on his wrist.

“Hand crafted for each other….”

“Kol! Enough or I leave right now.” Klaus’ voice was low and full of authority. “Now, I told her, ‘Listen Y/N, I can save her, but I need to bind you with a spell to help pull her out of this. All you both need to do is to drink a little bit of my blood, since I’m the witch performing the spell, and then I do the rest of the work’. And even though it took a little convincing, she eventually agreed that she wanted her mother to be back to full health! Such a wonderful, selfless daughter!” he teased, causing Kol’s blood to sizzle even more.

“So, I fed her my blood first, convincing her that she had to do it first since she was the healthy one. And then, after she drank it all down, thanking me over and over and over…. I snapped the little bitch’s neck.” He finished, any trace of joking gone. Kol was so angry at him! How DARE he kill her! She didn’t even know that vampires existed, let alone that they were the original family! She didn’t pose any threat to them! If only he hadn’t gone with Elijah… if only he had stayed with her a few more days, how would everything had turned out? He never even got to say goo-

“Wait,” Kol whispered, “did you just say that she had your blood in her system? That she’s-“

“Alive? Yes. Your little lady love is alive, and quite well. Thanks to her nearly dead mother who served her final purpose by allowing her daughter to feed for the first time.” Klaus was so proud of himself.

“Then.. Where in the hell is she!” demanded Kol. “Its been almost 400 years! What did you do to her!”

“Relax, she’s been on her own. We just had a little… falling out after her transformation. I made her swear she would keep her distance for a hundred years, and when that passed too quickly then I just started to keep her away. Like a little game!” Klaus tried to explain, although each word that came out of his mouth only infuriated Kol further.

“I… cannot believe you!” Kol started. “To tease Rebekah for the false loves she had every other day was one thing, but you watched me fall for her for years, Niklaus! How could you even-“

“And today the game, sadly for me, comes to an end. You see, you and I have grown so close in recent months, and in light of… recent events, I’ve decided that I have done you wrong for too long.” He reached over and took another shot glass from in front of Kol. “I didn’t bring you here to play stupid drinking games, Kol. I brought you here to- well, look for yourself.”

He nodded toward a door at the back of the club. It was swinging shut, someone having walked out of it. Kol’s chest tightened when he saw her: long, shiny hair, makeup all done, perfect manicure, with jet black heels, dark jeans, and a blazer. She was holding a binder in one arm and a coffee cup in the other hand. It was as if it was all happening in slow motion; her walking towards him, those piercing y/e/c eyes focused on the other side of the bar, hair wooshing back and forth. When she reached the end of the bar, she sat both the cup and binder down and started flipping through the binder, calling over the bartender to show him something.

He couldn’t believe it, she was alive and right in front of him! Of course, he wanted to run to her and take her in his arms and kiss her entire face and listen to every single detail that he had missed out on. But there he was like the first time he had ever seen her, frozen in place and words caught in his mouth. Klaus smirked at him before standing and then darting right next to her with his vampire speed. He didn’t know what to do so he just watched as she tensed up.

“Who the hell drinks coffee at a club?”

“Well, I’m not going to lie I never thought I would see you showing up here of all places, Klaus.” her beautiful voice was music to his ears, making his heart try to come through his chest again. He hadn’t felt that in almost 400 years... “What the hell do you want? Haven’t you already done your worst?” His heart sank, she sounded so tired.

“Now, love, why on earth would you say that? Have you not had great lifetimes?” Klaus teased, pulling her binder in front of him. “Oh, lovely, expanding are we?” she yanked it back from him.

“To what do I owe this… pleasure?” she said through her teeth.

“I came to apologize to a few people that I’ve done wrong. And you, love, are one of those people. So I’m here to make it all up to you!”

“Ha. Jesse, go outside and tell me if you see any pigs flying!” she yelled toward the bartender, crossing her arms. “Because that’s the only way I’ll believe that Klaus Mikaelson is coming into my club and admitting that he’s done any wrong.”

“I’m a changed soul, Y/N! And I can prove it.”

“Fine. Prove to me you’re a changed soul and I may CONSIDER forgiving you.” Her tone was flat.

“Only consider!”

“You killed me, had me kill my own mother, made me swear to stay away from the man I loved, then kept me from him, and when I finally find you, you’ve gotten him killed!” She was angry, so angry. Kol had never seen her so stoic or heard her voice so laced with malice. “You’re lucky that ‘consider’ is even an option.”

“Fine. I guess.” Klaus threw his arms up in mock surrender. “Well love, are you ready for my apology?” she shrugged, and butterflies started going mad in Kol’s stomach. Everything was in slow motion again. Klaus stepped aside and gestured behind him. Y/N rolled her eyes and looked his way, her jaw dropping and her eyes popping as soon as they landed on him. Their eyes stayed locked for what seemed like an eternity and then all of a sudden she was directly in front of him, eyes darting all over his face as if she was trying to memorize every inch; afraid he was going to disappear all over again. Words wouldn’t form for him, and he realized that he had been standing for who knows how long. All he could do was stare at her, mouth open wide. Another eternity passed, and then one of them finally spoke.

1. Baked Alaska, who threatened a lawsuit over a photo (that he forgot that he made)

America’s favorite possibly-self-macing internet racist – Twitter user @BakedAlaska – took issue with a news story posted by AJ Plus that called him a white supremacist (no idea why anyone would accuse him of that!) and for photoshopping a gun over a picture of his face. And who can blame him? It’s a sloppy photoshop job and certainly paints him as a violent individual – where would AJ Plus get such an idea?!

This is a pretty brutal self-own – threatening to sue an organization for photoshopping you….and then finding out it was YOUR PHOTOSHOP they were using. And it was LESS THAN A MONTH OLD. And – somehow – he has not yet deleted either the tweet accusing AJ Plus of improper reporting NOR his original photoshop.

2. Ian Miles Cheong, who is convinced that we haven’t been to space

Who is Ian Miles Cheong? Well, if you’re not familiar with THE ETHICS OF TRUE VIDEOGAMES JOURNALISM (and the various controversial factions of insanely angry individuals who obsess over the perceived bias of videogame websites), he might be a stranger to you. He fashions himself as a videogame and culture journalist, writing primarily for the right-wing outlet The Daily Caller.

But more importantly, he’s the type of writer who spends pretty much every day tweeting nonstop about whatever’s making him mad at that particular moment, and usually in extremely weird, nonsensical ways – like saying humanity had not gone to space circa 1977 because a child likes to dress in drag.

A few issues here (beyond the grammatical problems):

1. What the hell is he talking about?

2. Why is a cute video of a kid who likes to dress up in drag making him so mad that his brain is short-circuiting and making him say that humanity’s greatest dream in 1977 was to someday travel into space?

3. We had absolutely been to space by 1977…HOW IS THIS BEING DEBATED?

Of course, Cheong wouldn’t let things like “basic logic” stop him from making the most baffling and pointless tweet in recent memory – and proceeded to argue that TECHNICALLY previous space travel didn’t count as ACTUAL SPACE?

His answer was “dig in way harder” and “completely change what he was talking about.” 

If you find yourself arguing about what technically counts as “space travel” online, maybe it’s time to accept the L and move on.

3. Louise Mensch, who fired her own lawyer….over Twitter….for correcting Evan McMullin…

This has been a banner year (of sorts) for Louise Mensch, aka the dumbest,  most easily duped faux-journalist to ever enter the online world. For months and months she drew attention to herself for her supposed insider info about Trump’s purported collusion with Russia and how the Supreme Court was planning to impeach him (despite, uh, how easy it is to check how the actual impeachment process works, and how it does not involve the Supreme Court) and that the death penalty was already being discussed for Trump and Steve Bannon. And as the investigation into the Trump campaign’s communication with Russia, Louise Mensch is proving a massive thorn in the side of the world of public opinion – since it becomes so much easier to dismiss actual evidence of collusion as phony when Louise Mensch is continually serving up heaping helpings of bullshit and being taken seriously enough to get published in the New York Times.

Still, Louise Mensch has a long and storied history of bizarre claims with no bearing on reality that I won’t attempt to summarize here – the point is that she gave herself a brutal, unprompted self-own this week by publicly firing her lawyer…ON TWITTER.

This is real – Mark Zaid was serving as a pro bono lawyer for Mensch, and now (apparently) no longer has her as a client. And the cause, bizarrely, was that he asserted (correctly) that the United States had engaged in propaganda campaigns (not to mention supporting coups) in other foreign nations throughout the years to subvert their democratic institutions. And Mensch decided to publicly embarrass both Zaid and herself with a weird, petty social media firing.

4. Peter Daou, who launched the stupidest website of 2017 and has been melting down ever since

Peter Daou is a special kind of online news pundit – one who unabashedly is dedicated to one person and one person only: former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton. His politics seem to lean left, but primarily in service to Secretary Clinton moreso than any firmly-held beliefs of his own. He could not be more clear about this: he was banking everything on her victory in November, and her loss has left him a shattered man – and now brags about his greatest enemies from the rightwing complimenting him for his loyalty to Hillary:

What truly makes his abject dedication to Clinton pretty sad is that leaked emails from last year confirm the campaign did not think highly of him and found him to be “a little off.”

Still, none of this has stopped Daou from launching a new digital venture – Verrit, an online brand that specializes in…inspirational quote macros with codes attached to them? On a WordPress blog? Explicitly only for people who voted for Hillary Clinton?

The reason it’s difficult to quickly sum up what Verrit is is because it’s a nebulously-defined idea with even vaguer purpose – it’s half-opinion pieces, half-random quotes and blurbs set against gray backgrounds. The one thing uniting everything are the six-digit numerical codes attached to each image – which allows you to type in the code to the site and see the same image you were already looking at. Realistically, the code-system that forms the foundation of Verrit only works to prevent trolls from making up fake Verrits – so, essentially, it’s a defense against a problem that only could come up after it was created.

The internet’s reaction to Verrit was expected – everyone making fun of it: for it’s confusing/contradictory purpose, for it’s piss-poor design, and for the impossible-to-penetrate messaging surrounding it. But things got much more serious when the site suffered a DDOS attack after it was formally endorsed by Hillary Clinton on Twitter. Peter Daou saw the criticism, the attack, and the swirling cacophony of people yelling at him the only way he knew how – by getting insanely mad online, which includes:

Calling out reporter Sopan Deb and putting him on blast for ‘liking’ a tweet critical of Verrit.

Being so blinded by people dunking on him nonstop, was completely unable to recognize the world’s most obvious troll who appeared to be paying him a compliment:

Yes, that is a furry with the Verrit logo photoshopped on. Christ, Peter Daou, c’mon.

And, of course, the requisite insanely tweet-thread meltdown – where he equates any and all criticism of Verrit with attacks on Hillary Clinton:

Despite pretty much every outlet online saying Verrit was a useless, pointless, poorly-thought out venture, Daou is remaining steadfast in his belief that Verrit is a worthy, noble pursuit. And honestly? You almost have to respect that kind of commitment.

5. Rush Limbaugh, who claimed Hurricane Irma was a liberal hoax perpetrated by the “climate change industry” and bottled water companies….and then evacuated Florida

Rush Limbaugh opened his week of radio programming with a pretty bold claim – the panic over Hurricane Irma was all being manufactured by conspiratorial forces looking to benefit or profit in some way off of a terrified public. While he wasn’t denying Hurricane Irma existed, he was denying that it posed any real threat and its severity was being exaggerrated for two insidious purposes:

1. To promote the “climate change agenda” by convincing people man-made climate change was partially responsible for both the frequency of recent hurricanes and their increasing strength

2. To scare people into buying bottled water

Of course, being Rush Limbaugh, he monologued about this for an insane amount of time (you can read the transcript here, if you’re into masochism), but that’s basically what it boiled down to – Irma wasn’t a big deal and was unlikely to hit South Florida in any significant way.

That was the beginning of the week – since then, Irma has decimated large portions of the Caribbean and is approaching Florida as a Category 4 storm…so Limbaugh is evacuating.

Mark Steyn is filling in on Rush Limbaugh’s radio show today, because Rush has had to evacuate his FL home/studio.

Yep – on Thursday’s show, Limbaugh said:

“May as well… announce this. I’m not going to get into details because of the security nature of things, but it turns out that we will not be able to do the program here tomorrow. We’ll be on the air next week, folks, from parts unknown.”

At no point in his program did he apologize for claiming that Hurricane Irma warnings were a hoax nor did he encourage his listeners to also evacuate. So within the span of the week, Limbaugh went from a hurricane truther to evacuating due to the same hurricane he had tried to convince his audience was no big deal.

Although, honestly, I think the most embarrassing aspect of all of this is this image Rush included in his transcript:

Finding Our Zen in Rishikesh

Nestled up in the foothills of the Himalayas on the banks of the Ganges River, Rishikesh is a charming town that attracts yogis and adventurers from around the world. It is free of meat, dairy and alcohol... making it the ideal location for people to focus on their spiritual and physical wellness. Regardless of where you are in Rishikesh, you are never more than a minute away from a yoga studio, a smoothie stand or a trekking service. 

It’s not hard to guess why we chose to soak up all of the good vibes in Rishikesh during our last three weeks in India. However, contrary to the healthy nature of this city... we spent our first 48 hours confined to the white walls of our hostel room. The evil demon known as “Delhi belly” had finally hit us. I’ll spare you the details, but after two miserable days of being sick, we were (nearly) convinced Rishikesh was the worst place in India and all we wanted to do was fly home. 

JJ described our feelings perfectly in a Facebook post:

The last week has been tough on Camryn and me. We have been both physically ill (the dreaded Delhi belly) and overwhelmed with homesickness, leaving us longing to be reunited with family & friends for the holidays. We are simply put....tired. Tired of being sick. Tired of being stared at without reason. Tired of people trying to pull us into their store/restaurant. Tired of shitty wi-fi. Tired of having to intensely check the seals of every water bottle we buy. Tired of dirty hostels and trains. Tired of the every day grind that comes with living in India. And in India.. you can't afford to be tired.

Travelling here has been equally rewarding as it has been challenging. We have made friends with incredible people, seen beautiful cities and been humbled by the intricacies and variety of the cultures in this country.

So, why travel if not for the pretty Instagram posts? I'd say it has do to with that restless feeling in your blood to be somewhat careless and do something crazy. The desire to break out of the routine, change your surroundings and rid yourself from the strains of everyday life.

We have spent so much of our time the past few days in our yurt nursing our bodies back to health, we have struggled with accepting all the hardship that is associated with living on the road. We've even kicked around the idea of leaving for Thailand early, with our tails tucked between our legs.

Needing to get some fresh air & perspective, we headed to our favorite cafe on the Ganges River for tea. As if the owners knew what we were going through, the cafe was playing my favorite Iron & Wine album....straight through. Reminder for life- never underestimate the incredible power of the right music at the right time. Sitting and watching the water roll by, I was patiently reminded, song by song, of how we got here and why it is the right place for us to be.

When we get back home, whenever that may be, I know it will still be home. Our minds and our spirits will be changed as a result of our travels, and home will still be there.

Why travel? Because it reminds you to be grateful for where you are and who you are with in life.

After a few days, we were finally feeling strong enough to leave the room (and it happened to be my birthday!) so we splurged on a white water rafting excursion down the Ganga. Luckily we had both been white water rafting before and knew at a high level what to expect, because it quickly became apparent that our guide didn’t speak any English. He gave the entire orientation and safety chat in Hindi... completely ignoring our presence. We nodded along, utterly clueless, and jumped aboard our small raft with a dozen Indian tourists.

For the next 24 km, our guide shouted the only English he knew: “PADDLE POWER” as we approached each rapid, indicating that we were supposed to paddle as hard as we could through the rapid. To our delight, the nine rapids we conquered were significantly larger than we had expected and it turned out to be quite an adventure.  

At one point, the guide motioned to the water and said (in Hindi) that we could jump in if we wanted to. The Indian tourists in the boat didn’t waste a minute diving right in, as it’s a big bucket list item for Indians to take a dip in the Ganges River. JJ and I on the other hand looked at each other in near horror, silently agreeing that we would not willingly float in freezing cold water that had quite recently melted from snow in the Himalayas.

All said and done, the gorgeous views and impressive rapids more than made up for the lack in communication, and we had a great time with an even better story to tell afterwards. As far as birthday celebrations go in India, I wouldn’t expect anything less. 

When we started planning our India trip back in July, Rishikesh was initially appealing as it is arguably the yoga capital of the world. While we would never call ourselves yogis before coming to India, we have both dabbled in yoga over the past few years and were excited to dive headfirst into something that has always intrigued us. 

We booked a five-day spiritual retreat at Sadhana Mandir Ashram, which we found online after a few hours of overwhelming Google searches. The retreat consisted of three yoga classes a day, a daily guided meditation session, philosophy of yoga lectures, vegetarian meals and silent hours between 8pm - 10am. We arrived at the peaceful property on the Ganges River a few miles outside of Rishikesh and promptly met our teacher for the week, a quirky 70-something-year-old women named Joy from Canada. 

We had our first yoga class an hour after arriving at the ashram, and quickly realized this retreat was not what we had expected. Here’s why:

Despite being Canadian, we could barely understand our instructor’s English due to her strong accent.  To make matters worse, our class was full of travelers who speak English as their second or third language... and they had a much harder time understanding her than we did. 

We didn’t get through one full sun salutation in the first 90-minute class. Once again, JJ and I are by no means accomplished yogis; however, at this point we had been practicing fairly regularly in India and we were craving a challenge... which we did not receive. 

The guru of this ashram is world-renowned for studying yoga and meditation in the Himalayas, and we were excited to learn more about his life, guided meditation and the philosophy of yoga. To our disappointment, the guided meditation and philosophical “discussions” consisted of us listening to recordings of the guru from the 80s, yelling at a crowd of followers for not appreciating the true practice of yoga. Not zen, not helpful, and in no way an enjoyable start or end to our days.

Our first reaction was to leave, but we decided to stick around for the next full day, having faith that it would get better. Unfortunately... it did not get better. We had yet to complete a full sun salutation, and it seemed that Joy moved from one pose to the next without any rhyme or reason. Maybe she was just winging this whole thing? Again, the thought of leaving continued to creep into our minds, and we couldn’t bear listening to the guru yell at us through a CD player one more time. 

There was a Brazilian couple in our class who were both yoga instructors, and once they confided in us that they were leaving the retreat early... we were motivated to make moves as well. We left that afternoon, checked into a guesthouse in Rishikesh and started searching for a new ashram.  

Ashram life round two: We had made a friend in Goa who studied yoga for three weeks in Rishikesh and highly recommended the Anand Prakash Ashram, so we promptly booked five nights there. Similar to the first one, the schedule consisted of morning meditation, two yoga classes per day, three vegetarian meals and silent hours. 

To our dismay, after two nights at this ashram… we wanted to leave again. Is there something wrong with us? Are our expectations too high? We couldn’t help but question why we weren’t feeling the zen that many people rave about in these environments… but it just wasn’t there for either one of us. The yoga classes here were a little more challenging, but still not what we were looking for. We were craving classes that are geared towards moderate beginners, with helpful adjustments made by the instructors… but these classes were geared towards people who had never taken a single yoga class before. There wasn’t any programming on the philosophy or foundation of yoga, which was something we were searching for... and everyone seemed to disappear during our breaks, resulting in no new friendships being made. 

I couldn’t help but feel perplexed at our experiences. It wasn’t until we met a woman at breakfast a few days later that I came to peace with our decision to leave both of the ashrams early. She was in her 50s and was in Rishikesh to renew her 200 and 300 hour yoga teacher training certifications. She informed us that many of the ashrams in Rishikesh cater towards people who come to India to practice yoga for the first time ever, and that what we were looking for probably required a personal yoga teacher (way out of our budget) or we needed to enroll in a yoga teacher training course (something we had never considered, due to our lack of experience). By the end of our conversation, I was feeling much better about our decision to leave early and inspired to enroll in a 200-hour teacher training course. I think I would have done it had we stayed in Rishikesh for another month. Maybe someday…

Despite our lackluster experience, the rooftop view at ashram number two was breathtaking. 

After our two failed attempts at ashram life, we found a yoga studio that had daily drop-in classes, and it absolutely kicked our butts. We started going to the ashtanga vinyasa class every morning at 9:30, attempting to mirror our tiny Indian teachers (more like magicians) who could bend themselves in all sorts of crazy positions. We had finally found a place that challenged us, and we didn’t miss a class the next two weeks (JJ even started going twice a day). As a result, he mastered his headstand and side crow, making for epic beach photos. That’s what yoga is all about, right? ;)  

In all seriousness, this yoga studio made us into significantly better yogis in just two weeks. We gained more control over our bodies, saw significant improvement in our flexibility, practiced new breathing and chanting exercises, learned how to count in Sanskrit... and found our tribe in the other travelers who attended class every day with us. We miss that place dearly, and hope to return someday. 

This was our humble abode at the Pyramid Cafe and Guesthouse for our last two weeks in Rishikesh. It may not look like much... but it was the coziest pyramid we’ve ever slept in. The temperature dropped under 40 at night, so we snuggled up with two very thick blankets and sported our hat and gloves most nights. 

The Pyramid Cafe was started by an eastern European man named Sleemy. He’s been in Rishikesh since the 60s, and built these pyramids by hand. He also wrote a wellness book with chapters on the benefits of spirulina, the dangers of immunizations and how to brew your own kombucha... among a hundred other health-related topics. Wearing only baggy pants and a thin cotton vest (sans shirt or shoes), Sleemy serves as the resident DJ every night... spinning trippy alien music and fixing the wifi when it goes out. Unfortunately, we forgot to take a photo of our new friend Sleemy.

We enjoyed most of our dinners at the Pyramid Cafe, indulging on liters of homemade kombucha (less than $2 / liter) and pyramid salads full of hand-picked veggies from the garden behind our cottage + topped with spirulina powder. For dessert, JJ would run down the hill to the German Bakery and pick up a vegan chocolate peanut butter ball. Over our last sips of kombucha, we’d sit around a bonfire, listening to live music and chatting with new friends. 

See why we never wanted to leave? 

The Pyramid Cafe also runs an animal shelter for abandoned street dogs. Female dogs are undesirable in India because no one wants to spend money to get them spayed, so the females are often kicked to the curb (or worse). This little nugget (named Pari, which means “angel” in Hindi) was the Pyramid’s most recent rescue. At only three weeks old, she was a fan favorite... even after she peed all over my scarf. 

We woke up around 7am each morning to birds chirping outside our pyramid, then casually made our way down the hill to the German Bakery. For some reason, Indians (ALL over India) think Germans make the best baked goods (apparently they’ve never never heard of France??) and every town we have been to over the last two months has had at least one German Bakery. We aren’t complaining, as the baked goods are delicious and this spot became an essential part of our morning routine. We joined our fellow yogis for breakfast before class every morning, ordering one Americano and a mixed veg stir-fry with cashew cheese and homemade pesto sauce for the two of us (total cost under $3). I still wake up every morning craving that breakfast...  

The street dogs and cows took quite a liking to JJ. 

Rishikesh is covered in signs and advertisements for spiritual workshops... from astrology classes to palm readings to sound healings and more. One poster in particular caught my eye: Smile Big Yoga + Reiki. 

Story time: when I was 13-years-old, I went on a family vacation to a dude ranch in Colorado. Just look at how well we fit in:

The Colorado altitude really affected me, and on the second day I was stuck inside the room with a debilitating migraine. My parents were talking about it over dinner that night, and a woman who was staying at the dude ranch overheard them. She said she was a Reiki master and offered up her services to help with my migraine, and they quickly accepted. I don’t remember much about the healing session, besides sitting upright in a chair in a dark room while she applied light pressure to certain parts of my head, neck and shoulders with the palm of her hands. Twenty minutes later... my migraine was gone and it didn’t come back the rest of the trip.

For the past 10 years, that story has stayed in my mind. You don’t hear about Reiki often in the U.S., but after seeing the poster in Rishikesh, I knew it was time to explore this mysterious healing practice. I scheduled an appointment for a Reiki healing session, and met Rossalyn the next day. Rossalyn is from the UK and has been doing Reiki and yoga for over 7 years, spending her last year in Rishikesh practicing Reiki on the rooftop of a gorgeous temple. It’s hard to explain the healing session, but after it was over, I felt as though I was in a magical bubble for the rest of the day. It also opened up a whole new channel of curiosity into my own spirituality. I had to learn more about this healing practice, so the very next day I signed up for my Reiki level 1 certification with Rossalyn. I spent two full days at the temple learning everything I could about Reiki, and I am now officially certified... meaning I can give Reiki to myself and others! 

At it’s core, Reiki is a healing technique that channels the universal life force from the healer to the patient... in order to restore physical and emotional well-being. Learning about this ancient Japanese practice surrounded by the energy of the Ganges River and the hills of the Himalayas was powerful to say the least. I plan to spend the next few months in SE Asia practicing Reiki on myself and JJ, and hopefully receive my Reiki level two certification somewhere along our journey.

A new travel friend of ours (hi Matthew!) once said, “India is not, as people keep calling it, an underdeveloped country, but rather, in the context of its history and cultural heritage, a highly developed one in an advanced state of decay.” I can’t think of a better way to describe the Indian culture, and this temple embodies that quote for me.

Watching the world go by. 

We spent Christmas Eve at a cafe owned by a woman from Denver, who has lived in Rishikesh for nearly 30 years. For the past ten years, she’s been hosting a Christmas Eve dinner party for travelers at her restaurant. Snuggled up on pillows and surrounded by new friends from Israel, Scotland, and New Zealand... we indulged on an amazing vegan Christmas meal complete with cheesecake, made with milk from the cow out back.

One of the biggest observations we made in India (especially in Rishikesh) is that nothing is advertised as “farm-to-table” or “vegan / vegetarian” or “organic / gluten free” -- everything just is all of those things. Before preparing most meals, restaurant owners run to the market (or to their gardens) and get fresh ingredients. And WOW can you taste the freshness. You also don’t pay twice as much to eat at these restaurants... if anything it’s cheaper! America: take note!! More veggies, more community gardens and more freshness please :)   

The owner (pictured in the back, with blonde hair), also runs a private school in Rishikesh, and she brought in some of her students to sing us Christmas carols after dinner. The little munchkins donned Santa hats and stumbled over the words to Jingle Bells, while I teared up in the corner thinking about home. We wrapped up the evening watching Elf on a big projector, and for a moment it felt like I was back in the Midwest having a family movie night. 

On Christmas Day, we attended a cacao ceremony. It was advertised all over town as an “out-of-this-world, life-changing experience.” The ceremony was held by an American couple who practice sound healing and tantra yoga all over the world. There were about 50 of us in a dimly lit room, sitting cross-legged and watching the couple prepare for the ceremony with candles, gongs and incense. We started the evening by drinking a cup of raw (and very hot) cacao, which is one of the strongest natural super foods you can consume. JJ and I both struggled to choke it down; it did not taste like hot chocolate, as I had naively anticipated, but rather had a throat-burning bitterness to it due to the amount of ginger mixed in. The next three hours consisted of group meditation, pranayama breathing exercises, kundalini yoga, and ecstatic dance. Our favorite part by far was the dancing. For an hour straight, we literally “danced like no one was watching” in a dark room full of strangers. It was a bonding experience like no other, and it felt good to let our freaky flags fly. 

‘Twas a Christmas we surely won’t forget for many years to come.

We spent NYE like any other day in Rishikesh... going to breakfast at the German Bakery, followed by yoga and reading by the Ganga. That night, two of our new Australian friends joined us for a progressive dinner at our favorite spots. We ended the night cheers’ing with chai and sharing stories of how we’ve celebrated NYE in the past (much crazier than this one). It felt good to drink chai instead of champagne... to eat a vegan dinner instead of gorging ourselves on cheesy dips... to fall asleep at the stroke of midnight, instead of staying up way too late... to wake up naturally at 7am for yoga class, instead of waking up with a hangover. 

We set the intention to remember how we felt this day, and bring that feeling with us into 2017. Our New Year’s resolutions include: continuing to improve our yoga practices, eating organic foods as much as possible, and unapologetically spending our time doing things that make us happy.

One of the most frustrating parts about Rishikesh (and India in general) is the lack of hiking trails. Despite being the launching point to one of the greatest mountain ranges in the world, it is impossible to explore this gorgeous wilderness without a guide or tour group... and it left us missing the National Park System in the U.S. more than ever. In order to go trekking here, you must pay over $100/person and take an 8-hour bus ride to “hike” with a guide who doesn’t speak much English. We opted out of that option, knowing it would leave us disappointed... and promised ourselves that we’ll come back to northern India + Nepal for a proper hiking trip one day. We did manage to find one trail that lead to a pretty waterfall and scenic views... and we coped by telling ourselves we weren’t here to go hiking, and we would be satisfied with admiring the foothills of the Himalayas from afar. 

Side note: while these experiences make me grateful for our National Park Service, National Forest Lands, National Monuments and Bureau of Land Management in the States... I’m sad to say that I now fear for the future of our public lands under the guidance of Trump. Read up on these articles here and here to learn more. 

In another attempt to go hiking, our guesthouse owner told us about a cave where a holy baba lives. We walked up a road about 8 kilometers (India’s version of “hiking”), found the cave and introduced ourselves to the baba. While he didn’t speak much English, he gave us a tour of the cave and told us that when he has questions, he meditates in this cave for answers. At one point he asked if we were married (in conservative Indian culture our answer to this question is always yes), to which he started calling me his sister. Then while showing us his home, he rummaged through a pile of things next to what appeared to be a shrine and pulled out a 10 rupee note. Despite my objections, he insisted on giving it to me, followed by an unnecessarily long hug. 

While the hug never crossed the line into creepiness, I was very glad JJ was there with me. We still don’t fully understand why he gave me 10 rupees, but it felt weird keeping the money so we donated it to the animal shelter our guesthouse manages.

Babas and sadhus sometimes get a bad rap in India as posers who scam tourists, so I’m glad we had a good (albeit strange) experience with this gentle man. I just wish we could have learned more about his story.

Oh India... while we won't miss your smells, stares, or the way you made us want to book flights home every other day... we will miss your authenticity, diversity in culture, friendly faces, gorgeous landscapes and incredible food.

You challenged us in ways we weren’t expecting and rewarded us in ways we will never forget. You changed our view of the world for the better.

You strengthened our travel legs, our relationship and our physical and spiritual bodies... and for that, we are forever grateful. We’ll be back again one day.
