On David Tennant and Aging
So, I’ve seen a lot of posts in response to Tumblr users’ habit of affectionately calling their favorite middle aged dudes “old men”, David Tennant in particular, saying things like “clearly you’ve never met an actual old person”, “omg you talk about these guys like they’re 80”, “please be normal about people aging”, etc. And on one hand, all of these statements are objectively right and true! But as someone who’s always been really fascinated by and found a lot of beauty in getting older (which I’ve explored in some of my writing on A03 because nobody else is going to do it for me), I’d like to provide a bit more nuance on how I think this label applies to David in particular.
David, obviously, in literal terms, is not “old”, at least not to me- I don’t personally consider people old until they get past 60. 52 is middle aged, simple as that. And yet, when I see David stuck with the “old man” label, it still somehow feels weirdly right, for a number of reasons.
It annoys me so much when people say David “hasn’t aged a day since Doctor Who”, because, well…
He clearly has. A lot. He’s got forehead creases, deep crows’ feet and eyebags, and I think that post-Fourteen we’re gonna see him rocking the grey temples a LOT more. He also has the voice of an older man now, his upper range is still there but the default is much more deep and rich, with a gravelly, rumbling quality that just goes straight through you. I personally think Broadchurch was when David finally started to embrace looking his age- Alec Hardy just wouldn’t have been served by Ten’s fresh-faced boyishness.
Obviously, these are the kinds of changes you’d expect any 52-year-old man to have, but something about David just makes it all seem a bit more… intense? The expressiveness of his face combined with his almost gaunt frame makes his wrinkles very prominent, and when he works his voice to its emotional extremes, his lower register can sound positively ancient, to devastating effect.
David, I think, is someone with an old soul- I don’t think he could be as good as he is at playing ancient characters like Crowley and The Doctor if he weren’t. He has lived so many lives, given so much of himself to so many characters, often incredibly tragic ones, and I think it wears on him. David also has five kids. FIVE. Do you know how exhausting it is to be one of the hardest working actors alive and be a present, loving father to even ONE child? But David somehow does it anyway! Nowadays I see him and my heart breaks because he looks so tired, so weary and fragile. But he’s all the more beautiful for it to me because I know that that is because he is kind. He’s a deeply empathetic person who feels and lives to the absolute fullest, and that story is written so clearly on his face, along with every other story he has ever been a part of.
There’s other things about David that make the label endearingly fitting- his utter hopelessness when it comes to technology, for instance. And he’s just got that warm, wise, grandpa energy too sometimes- look at that above Fourteen picture and tell me I’m wrong!
I once showed my friend who’d only seen David in Doctor Who and Harry Potter a picture of David from Around The World in 80 Days. It was a particularly emotional scene, and his face had just the most beautiful expression of compassion and sadness, every wrinkle on full display. And she said, in a less than complimentary fashion, “he looks so old!” Which, of course, offended me quite a bit at first. But to me, referring to David as old almost feels like a badge of honor, something he’s earned by living fully and selflessly, working hard and being wise and compassionate beyond his years. I think David himself is secretly more than a little insecure about the fact that he’s getting older. There’s sadness behind every jovially self-depreciating remark he’s made about his age in the past year, particularly in comparing himself to Ncuti Gatwa. I know how much David struggles with his impostor syndrome and how people perceive him, and I can clearly see in his eyes the fear of being discarded, the anxiety he feels about if he’ll still be as loved as he was back in 2007 now that he’s closer in age to King Lear than he is to Romeo. So I hope David knows it’s a privilege to watch him grow older, to watch his soul and talents deepen with the crinkles around his eyes. If I, in my silly goofy tumblr girl-ness, call David Tennant an old man, it’s because it’s a label that suits him beautifully- even if it isn’t TECHNICALLY an accurate one yet.

Volturi X Pregnant Reader
“How the fuck could this happen?” You yelled looking down at the pee filled plastic piece of fate in your hand. A test. A pregnancy test of all the tests in the world, this is the one you passed?
“They’re vampires. I thought none of that could work?” You questioned yourself looking in the mirror.
“Oh my god.. I don’t even know whose it is.” Your eyes widen in shock.
You never thought that you would be the kinda girl to have this problem. Taking a second to think you realized there was no way for you to be able to tell whose baby it was. Out of all the nights for you to pass this test, meanwhile the last time you were intimate with your love's you were being passed around like a blunt.
“I can’t.. I can’t do this.” You whispered to yourself as you shook your head.
“Wait, I have to push this thing out? Oh hell no.” You started panicking.
You had always been frightened of the process of birth. The pain, the restless nights, the fact that a living thing was growing inside of you. You never asked to be a garden.
“You think I can, you know.. Get rid of.. You know.. It?” You asked yourself outloud slowly. Holding eye contact with nothing and no one but yourself you still never gave an answer.
“Nahh it must be a mistake. It’s lying, these things are wrong all the time.” You laughed, feeling your shoulders relax immediately. You tossed the test in the bin next to the sink and started leaving the bathroom. The moment you stepped out you froze. And so did your breath. There in front of you stood your lovers. All of them.
“You're pregnant.” Alec was the first one to speak after a minute of silence.
“No-” You started but was immediately cut off.
“Don’t lie, we can hear it.” Caius spat out, a frown on his face making your heart ache a little. Caius wasn’t the nicest but you’ve never seen him look at you like this.
“I-How I just found out?” You questioned.
“It’s a vampire, It’s been baking for two days now.” Dem spoke looking you up and down as if he was examining you.
“I-”
“This is an abomination. You're getting rid of it.” Cauis said firmly.
“What?” You questioned.
“It’s against the rules.” Aro stated like that mattered to you.
“So what?! You make the rules!” You yelled feeling protective of the pea or baseball size of a baby you just found out about.
“It’s a killer.” Alec said taking side by Jane.
“Trust me, we know.” Jane said so monetoned.
“A killer? It’s not even here yet! A killer? Then what the fuck are you!?” You yelled throwing the closest thing to you, which happened to be a vintage vase that you saw and fell in love with. Marcus had gave the task to some vampires to steal it for you as it was an antique in a museum
Seeing it hit the ground and shatter you immediately burst into tears.
“My vase!” You sobbed feeling a heavy sadness you hadn’t felt in a while. The vampires glanced at each other witnessing the affects the infant has already brung upon you.
“Yeah.. Our lives are going to be a living hell if we keep this thing.” Felix stated making the others agree in their own ways in silence, as you sobbed over the pieces of glass trying to put the back together.
2 weeks later
“I’m hungry, But I don’t want that.” You said pointing to the wine glass Aro held in his hand. It was full of a red substance made specifically for you, he said.
“It’s just wine.” Aro said as his grin grew bigger tell you that he's lying his ass off. And doing a bad job at it.
“Like hell it is! You're trying to kill me!” You said crawling back further into the couch you were sitting on.
“That would be easier than whatever this is.” Caius spoke looking at the scene of you and Aro in distaste.
It had been 2 weeks since you found out you were pregnant.
The tension has still been high on both ends. With your never ending mood swings that always ended with you breaking something and in tears. The amount of glass you’ve broken is enough to bring bad luck on all those who step foot in this castle.
“Shut up!” You yelled at Caius, bothered by his attitude. His comments lately have been putting you on edge every time he spoke yet he still doesn’t walk on eggshells around you like Alec, Felix, Marcus have. You honestly wish he would so you wouldn’t have to hear his mouth.
“What is that?” You questioned turning your head as Aro tried to make you take a sip of the mystery liquid in the glass.
“Your favorite wine.” Aro said, like it was a fact, causing Jane to snicker in the back making Alec laugh immediately.
“You see I would believe you if I didn’t know how my favorite wine moved.” You started.
“That’s thick.” You finished with a monotone voice.
“It’s just-”
“Blood My-! We're going to be here all day unless you tell her.” Dem groaned, rubbing his eyes in annoyance.
“I know you're lying! Are you serious?” You questioned raising your eyebrows in disbelief.
“You had to have known that this was coming soon.” Jane stated, looking at you as she herself was sipping on a glass of wine.
“I didn’t think it wouldn’t come, I just thought we’d talk about it instead of trying to trick me into it!” You yelled looking at Aro with eyes that slowly grew furious.
“Here we go again.” Cauis spoke, shaking his head.
“I’m just sick of hearing you speak, can you shut up!?” You questioned in frustration of Caius’s existence.
“Can you just stop?! I swear in my whole existence I've never met a human more irritating than you!” He shouted right back at you. Hearing his words you felt a shock of sadness run through you. Your eyes immediately watered.
“You don’t love me?” You merely whispered as tears ran down your face. Full on sobbing now. Cauis looked shocked. Like he didn’t know what to do with you. And quite frankly none of your love’s knew what to do.
“Don’t cry darling.. That’s not what he meant.” Marucs said softly as he walked into the room sitting next to you.
“Then what did he mean?” You question looking at Marcus with wet eyes. He led you to lay your head on his chest by your head making you immediately relax.
“What I think is this is a very complicated time for us all. And it will take some getting used to but it won’t last forever.” He spoke with wisdom flowing through his veins.
“It feels like forever.” Felix said snickering but immediately apologizing when you shot him a pointed look.
“I’m sorry baby.” Felix apologized, making you relax back into Marcus' chest.
“What did that doctor tell you?” You questioned, referring to Carlise, the vampire doctor Cauis ordered Aro to call in attempts to find a way to get rid of the seed sprouting inside of you. Summoning a fight in you you never knew you had.
The anger you felt that night was one you’ve never felt before. One you couldn’t even explain with words. One that you could only explain or show with physical action.
“That you should drink the wine.” Jane spoke with annoyance rolling her eyes.
“You drink it!” You yelled.
“I don’t even know where that came from.” You continued as your body went back and forth with the feeling of being relaxed and tensed.
“A human.” Alec said plainly.”
“I’m not drinking that.” You said for the last time. And they knew it. Sighs flowed through the room as Aro finally gave up and put the glass of blood down.
The vampires consumed themselves in conversation as you zoned out. Some of the talk was about the baby, you, blood, and death. Things you didn’t want to hear. The talks of them turning you made tears roll down your face. Your hands made their way from Marcus’s to your stomach. You knew that at some point you would have to turn if you wanted to be with your lovers forever. But you didn’t think it would come this soon. You wanted to experience a bit more of the human world. Rather that was by yourself or with your eternal love’s.
You smiled at that thought as you felt the baby inside of you start squirming.
Wait squirming?
It’s moving?
Your eyebrows frowned in confusion. You’ve never felt the baby move like this. You opened your mouth to speak but all that made a sound was little hums. That softened to nothing as your sight bounced from light to black.
You had plenty of time to die.
Or so you thought.

Home Away From Home -- Luke Hughes
Summary: Annika isn't gonna fall for the stupid hockey guy her parents are housing... right?
content: angst, implied smut but no explicit smut, some makeout scenes, fluff!!
wc: 8.9k
notes: i love this trope so here we are!! enjoy!!
Annika hadn't signed up for this.
She sat at the kitchen island, her arms crossed, watching her mom fuss over a plate of freshly baked cookies. George Thompson, her dad, was setting up the dining table with an enthusiasm that made her roll her eyes. The boys--twelve-year-old Alex and nine-year-old Flynn--were practically shaking with excitement.
"Do we really need cookies?" Annika asked, a touch of exasperation in her tone. "We're not adopting a puppy. He's just a guy. A hockey player, at that."
Andrea turned, a stern look on her face. "Annika, be polite. Luke is our guest. He's going to be a part of this family while he's here."
"Right," Annika muttered, "because this house isn't already crowded enough."
"Hey!" Alex piped up, shooting her a look of betrayal. "Luke Hughes is not just a guy. He's going to play for the Devils! He's super awesome!"
"Yeah!" Flynn added. "And he's way cooler than your boring boyfriend."
Annika groaned, pinching the bridge of her nose. "For the last time, Bryce and I broke up like three months ago."
"Probably cause he wasn't cool like a real NHL player!" Alex nodded.
Andrea shot the boys a warning glance but said nothing as she placed the plate of cookies at the centre of the table. "All I'm saying, Nick, is that this is a big adjustment for him too. He's young, he's new to Jersey, and he needs a supportive home environment. So please, try to make him feel welcome."
Nick refrained from commenting, though her skepticism must have been obvious, because her dad chuckled. "Come on, Nick. You might like the kid. Who knows?"
She doubted it. Sure, Luke Hughes was talented--she'd heard her brothers talk about him nonstop since her parents agreed to host him--but "some guy who skates for a living" didn't exactly sound like the type of perso she wanted to hang out with.
Still, when the doorbell rang, she couldn't help but feel a little curious.
~~
Luke hadn't expected to feel nervous.
But as he stood on the porch of the Thompsons' suburban house, duffle bag swung over one shoulder, his nerves hit him like a train. He rang the doorbell twice, the chime ringing out into the evening air.
The door swung open, and two kids stared up at him like he was a rockstar.
"Whoa," the older one--Alec or Alex, Luke couldn't remember--breathed. "You're really Luke Hughes."
Flynn just blinked, his jaw practically on the floor. "You're so tall," he finally said, wide-eyed.
Luke laughed awkwardly, glancing past the kids as an older man appeared in the doorway.
"You must be Luke," George said warmly, extending a hand. "Come on in, son. Welcome to our home."
"Thanks for having me," Luke said, stepping inside. The house smelled like cookies and furniture polish--cozy and warm, a sharp contrast to the hockey house he'd lived in the last two years.
The rest of the family came into view, and Luke felt the weight of their attention. A kind-looking woman who must've been Mrs. Thompson smiled warmly, and then his gaze landed on the girl standing behind her.
She was... unexpected.
Annika's arms were crossed, her expression unreadable. She didn't seem particularly thrilled to see him, though Luke couldn't tell if that was because of him or if she was just naturally unimpressed by life.
"This is Annika, our oldest," Andrea said, gesturing to her daughter.
Luke offered a hand. "Hi."
"Hey," Annika replied shortly, barely glancing at him before turning to her mom. "Can we eat now, or...?"
Luke's hand fell awkwardly to his side. Okay, then.
~~
Luke followed the Thompsons into the dining room, where the table was already set with a plate of cookies and some milk. He wasn't sure if it was meant to be welcoming or if they thought he was still ten years old, but the gesture was nice.
"Sit, sit!" Andrea said, waving him toward the table like he was royalty.
He slid into a chair, his bag at his feet. Across the table, the two boys continued to gape at him like he had two heads.
"Can I touch it?" Flynn blurted out, and Luke's eyebrows shot up.
"Your hockey stick," Alex clarified, giving his brother an exasperated shove.
"Uh, yeah, sure," Luke said, chuckling nervously. "I left it by the door. I can show you later."
"Awesome!" Flynn squealed.
Nick, leaning against the doorway with her arms still crossed, looked like she might die of secondhand embarrassment. Her blue eyes were narrowed in thinly veiled irritation.
"Boys, give him a minute to settle in," Andrea scolded softly. "Luke, you can call me Andrea, and that's my husband George." She gestured at her husband, who was helping himself to a cookie. "You've met the boys, Alex and Flynn."
"Yep," Luke said with a smile. "They're... enthusiastic."
"And Nick already introduced herself."
"Nick?" Luke tilted his head, confused.
Annika sighed as though she'd had to explain this a million times. "It's short for Annika. You know, like a nickname?"
"Oh. Got it."
Luke was quickly starting to realize that Annika wasn't the "warm and fuzzy" type.
"Nick's a student at Rutgers," George chimed in, as though sensing he needed to fill the silence. "She's studying communications. Smart kid, but she's a bit of a grump."
"Dad," Nick said sharply, though her cheeks flushed slightly pink.
"Don't mind her," George added with a conspiratorial grin. "She's just mad she doesn't have her bathroom all to herself anymore."
Nick shot Luke a look, and he shifted uncomfortably in his seat. Sharing a bathroom? Great. This was going to be... interesting.
~~
By the time Luke hauled his duffle bag up the stairs, he was ready to crash. The Thompsons were nice--mostly--but the whirlwind of introductions had left him drained.
"This is you," George opened a door at the end of the hall. The room was small but tidy, with a twin bed, a desk, and a window overlooking the backyard.
"Thanks," Luke said, dropping his bag onto the bed.
"Bathroom's just down there to the left," George added. "Sorry in advance if Nick complains about you using it. She's not used to sharing."
Luke nodded, unsure how to respond. George clapped him on the back and left, leaving him alone to unpack.
"Just so we're clear," Nick showed up in the doorway. "I don't care if you're some big hotshot hockey player. It's still my house, and if you leave your gross hockey gear lying around, I will throw it out."
Luke blinked, caught off guard. "Uh... noted?"
"Good," she said, her tone sharp enough to cut steel. She started to leave, then paused, glancing over her shoulder. "And don't take forever in the bathroom. Some of us actually have places to be besides the hockey rink."
Before he could respond, she was gone, leaving Luke standing there with a pair of socks in his hands and the faintest trace of a smirk on his face.
She was definitely going to be a challenge.
~~
Nick woke up the next morning to the sound of running water and muffled thud from next door. Groaning, she rolled over and squinted at the clock on her nightstand. It was barely 6:30 a.m.
"Seriously?" she muttered, pushing the covers off.
Her first day sharing a bathroom with Luke was off to a fantastic start. Wrapping herself in her fluffy robe, she shuffled out of her room, only to nearly collide with Flynn, who was standing in the hallway, clutching his toothbrush.
"Is he still in there?" Nick asked, jerking her thumb toward the bathroom door.
"Yeah," Flynn said, his voice tinged with awe. "I think he's doing hockey stuff. Like stretches or whatever."
Nick raised an eyebrow. "In the bathroom?"
Flynn shrugged, and Nick let out an exasperated sigh. She banged on the door. "Hey, Hughes! Some of us need to use the bathroom too, you know!"
There was a brief pause before the door cracked open, revealing a very shirtless Luke. His hair was wet, beads of water clinging to his skin, and he held a towel loosely around his waist.
Nick froze.
"Uh... sorry?" Luke said, looking sheepish. "I didn't think anyone else would be up yet."
"Yeah, well," Nick snapped, forcing herself to look anywhere but at his chest, "you're not living in a bachelor pad, so maybe keep it moving."
"Right. Got it." He stepped aside, gesturing toward the sink to let her pass.
Nick brushed past him, her cheeks burning, and shut the door firmly behind her.
~~
When Nick made it to the kitchen, she was still fuming. Flynn and Alex were already seated at the table, shoveling cereal into their mouths like Luke sat across from them, wearing a hoodie and looking way too innocent.
"Morning," Andrea chirped, sliding a plate of scrambled eggs in front of Nick. "Sleep okay?"
"Would've been better if someone didn't turn the bathroom into his personal sauna," Nick muttered, shooting a pointed look at Luke.
To her annoyance, he just smirked. "I'll set an alarm for 6:29 next time. How's that?"
Alex snorted milk out of his nose, and Flynn started laughing so hard he nearly fell out of his chair.
"Luke's funny," Flynn declared, as though it was groundbreaking news.
"Luke's annoying," Nick corrected, stabbing her eggs with a little more force than necessary.
Andrea sighed. "Annika, be nice. Luke, honey, make sure Annika has time in the bathroom too."
"Yes ma'am," Luke grinned.
Nick glared at him, but his smile only grew.
~~
Nick had classes at Rutgers until late afternoon, which was usually her excuse to escape the chaos of her house. Today, though, chaos seemed determined to follow her.
She was sitting at her favourite coffee shop near campus, trying to focus on a group project, when her phone buzzed with a text from Alex.
Alex (12:34 PM): Guess what??? Luke said he'd come to my game on Saturday!!!
Nick rolled her eyes but responded anyway.
Nick (12:35 PM): wow! cool, bud. tell him to pack an extra helmet in case you miss a slapshot
Her phone buzzed again almost immediately.
Alex (12:36PM): u r not funny
Nick smirked, but her amusement was short-lived. A voice behind her said, "You look like you're plotting someone's downfall."
She turned to see Luke standing there, hands shoved in the pocket of his hoodie, looking slightly out of place in the sea of students.
"What are you doing here?" she asked, frowning.
"Your mom said you had the extra car... and I need a lift to the rink."
Nick blinked. "So you walked here? Just Google how to walk to the rink."
Luke shrugged. "Figured you'd just let me borrow the car."
She sighed, grabbing her laptop and shoving it into her bag. "Fine. Come on."
~~
That evening, after dinner, the boys dragged Luke into the living room for a mini hockey practice. Flynn wore a devishly determined look as he tried (and failed) to get the puck past Luke, while Alex gave commentary.
Nick watched from the sofa, trying not to smile. It was hard to keep her guard up when Luke was crouched on the floor, pretending to dramatically miss a save just to make Flynn cheer.
"He's good to them," Andrea whispered, sitting down beside her.
Nick blinked, startled. "Huh?"
"Luke," Andrea said, nodding towards the game of floor-hockey. Luke had ruffled Flynn's hair, earning a high-pitched giggle, and Alex was laughing so hard he had to clutch his side.
"Yeah, I guess," Nick admitted reluctantly. She wasn't ready to admit that Luke might've been slightly, a tiny bit okay-ish.
~~
She wasn't sure when she started noticing the little things about Luke.
Maybe it was the way he always made time to answer Alex and Flynn's endless questions about hockey. Or how he seemed genuinely interested in her every meal her mom made.
Or maybe it was that he wasn't as cocky and annoying as she'd originally thought.
Not that she'd admit it.
Saturday morning found Nick sitting in the bleachers at Alex's hockey game, sipping a lukewarm coffee and trying to focus on anything other than Luke, who was perched on the edge of the bench next to Flynn.
"Think he'll embarass himself?" Luke asked, lowly enough that only Annika could hear.
"Alex?" Nick smirked. "Absolutely. He lives for the drama."
Luke laughed, and Nick hated how much the sound didn't make her cringe. He was wearing a Devils cap pulled backwards over his messy curls, a plain hoodie, and an easy smile. It was almost... attractive.
The game started, and Alex threw himself into it with the subtlety of a wrecking ball. He wasn't the most skilled player on the ice, but his enthusiasm was unmatched.
"Go, Alex!" Flynn shouted, nearly toppling over the edge of the bench.
Nick found herself glancing at Luke occasionally, surprised by how invested he looked. He leaned forward, his elbows on his knees, watching Alex like it was Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals.
When Alex scored--a chaotic, scrappy goal that Nick was pretty sure only counted because the ref was feeling generous--Luke jumped up to his feet, clapping and cheering louder than anyone else.
"You act like it's the Olympics," Nick teased as he sat back down.
"What? That was awesome!" he said, still smiling like an idiot. "Kid's got guts."
Nick shook her head, but a smile tugged at her lips. She hadn't seen Alex light up like that in a long time.
The parking lot was full of parents chatting as they loaded their kids and gear into cars. Alex was still on cloud nine, his sweaty hair sticking to his forehead as he recounted his goal for the tenth time.
"And then I deked left, and the goalie totally fell for it!" Alex said, demonstrating with exaggerated movements.
"More like you tripped into the puck," Nick teased, ruffling his hair.
Alex scowled. "You weren't even paying attention!"
"I was," Luke cut in, slinging an arm around Alex's shoulders. "And I think it was a sick goal."
Alex beamed up at him, and Nick had to admit--grudgingly--that Luke's support was doing wonders for her brothers' confidence.
"Thanks, Luke," Alex said. "Maybe you could help me practice my shot sometime?"
"Yeah, anytime, dude," Luke said without hesitation.
Nick's mom appeared then, holding Alex's bag. "Luke, seems like you're fitting in just fine around here."
Nick rolled her eyes but didn't comment.
~~
Back at the house, Alex and Flynn insisted on replaying the game on the living room floor, complete with mini-sticks, a foam ball, and way too much shouting.
Nick sat, pretending to read while Luke crouched on the floor, acting as a goalie.
"Careful," Luke warned, blocking one of Flynn's shots. "I don't want to break another lamp."
"That was Alex's fault!" Flynn protested.
"Was not!" Alex shouted, aiming another shot.
Nick couldn't help but laugh as the foam ball ricocheted off the wall and into Luke's chest.
"Game over," Luke declard, collapsing dramatically onto the floor.
The boys groaned, but Nick was grateful for the silence as they finally trudged upstairs, still arguing about whose shot was better.
Luke sat up, running a hand through his hair. "Your brothers are intense."
"They're obsessed with you," Nick said, closing her book. "It's kind of nauseating."
"Jealous?"
"Of what? The chaos? No, thanks."
He stood, stretching, and Nick's eye flicked to the hem of his shirt, which rode up just enough to reveal a sliver of toned abs. She quickly looked away, hoping her cheeks weren't as red as they felt.
"Good game today," she said, standing and heading toward the stairs before he could say anything else.
"Thanks," he called after her, and there was something in his voice that made her stomach flip.
~~
Nick paced back and forth in her room, her phone pressed to her ear as she tried to keep her voice down.
"I'm telling you, Mia," she whispered, "he's insufferable. Like, he doesn't do anything that bad, but the fact that he exists in my house is enough to drive me fucking insane."
On the other end of the line, Mia snorted. "Translation: You're fucking obsessed with him."
"What! No?" Nick flopped onto her bed, glaring at the ceiling. "I'm just... he's in my way. All the time. The bathroom thing? Unforgivable. And he's always around, charming my brothers and being all polite to my mom, and--it's annoying!"
"You're mad because he's polite?" Mia teased. "Wow, Nick, you're really reaching."
Nick groaned, throwing an arm over her face. "You don't get it. He's--ugh. He's just one of those guys, you know? All... awkwardly cute and unexpectedly funny and stupidly attractive--"
"Uh-huh," Mia interrupted, her voice laced with amusement. "Say that last part again?"
Nick sat up, her face heating. "I didn't mean it like that!"
"Sure you didn't."
"Mia," Nick hissed, her eyes darting toward the door. "I'm serious. He's just--fine, okay? I'll admit it. He's hot. Like ridiculously, stupidly hot. But that doesn't mean I don't hate his guts."
"Hate his guts? You sure you don't just want him to rearrange yours?"
Nick groaned. "I can't stand you?"
"And yet here you are, calling me for emotional support about your hot hockey housemate," Mia said smugly. "What a tragedy."
"He's just... objectively attractive. I can hate someone and still recognize that they're good-looking. Those two things can coexist."
"Sure, Nick," Mia giggled. "Whatever you say."
Nick groaned, burying her face in her pillows.
Flynn crouched in the hallway, his ear pressed to the crack under Nick's door. Beside him, Alex knelt, covering his mouth so he didn't giggle too loudly.
"Did she just say Luke is hot?" Flynn whispered, eyes wide.
"She totally did," Alex grinned.
Flynn giggled. "We have to tell him!"
"Duh," Alex said, scrambling to his feet.
The boys darted down the stairs, giggling like they'd just discovered the best secret in the world.
Luke was sitting in the living room, flipping through channels on the TV, when they skidded to a stop in front of him.
"Luke!"
"You're not gonna believe this!"
Luke quirked an eyebrow, setting the remote down. "What's up, guys?"
"Nick thinks you're hot!" Flynn blurted out, unable to contain himself.
Luke blinked, caught completely off guard. "What?"
"She said it on the phone," Alex explained. "She was talking to her friend, and she said you're 'ridiculously, stupidly hot.'"
Flynn nodded eagerly. "She also said you're annoying, but mostly that you're hot."
Luke huffed out a laugh, leaning back against the couch. "She actually said that?"
"Yup!" Flynn said proudly.
Luke shook his head, a slow grin spreading across his face. "Alright. Thanks for the intel."
The boys high-fived and ran off, leaving Luke alone with his thoughts.
Ridiculously, stupidly hot, huh?
He filed that tidbit away, a faint smirk tugging at his lips. He didn't plan on using it right away--but when the right moment came, he'd be ready.
A few hours later, Nick came downstairs to grab a glass of water, grateful that the house was finally quiet. She froze when she saw Luke in the kitchen, leaning against the counter with a glass in hand.
"Couldn't sleep?" he asked casually.
"Nope," she said shortly, pouring herself some water.
As she turned to leave, she felt his eyes on her, and her steps faltered.
"What?" she snapped, glancing over her shoulder.
Luke shook his head, his expression unreadable. "Nothing. Just... interesting."
"What's interesting?"
"Nothing you'd want to admit," he said with a slight smirk, turning back to his drink.
Nick scowled, marching back upstairs, vowing to ignore whatever cryptic nonsense he was playing at. Behind her, Luke chuckled softly to himself, his smirk only growing.
~~
Annika was still determined to go about her life as if nothing had happened. Luke was still the irritating, too-hot-for-his-own-good hockey player who'd invaded her space. Nothing more.
But he wasn't making it easy.
It started small. Like how he suddenly seemed to be everywhere she was.
Case in point: the kitchen.
Nick had just finished a workout and was rummaging through the fridge for a bottle of water when Luke appeared, freshly showered and leaning against the kitchen island.
"Morning," he said, annoyingly chipper.
"Morning," she replied shortly, avoiding eye contact.
"Work out hard?" he asked, his gaze sweeping over her.
Nick's head snapped up. "What?"
"You're all flushed," he said innocently, taking a slow sip of his protein shake. "Maybe you overdid it."
Her cheeks heated further, and she hated that he'd noticed. "I'm fine," she said, grabbing her water and slamming the fridge shut.
Luke smirked, watching her retreat.
~
That weekend, Andrea sent Nick and Luke to pick up groceries. It was supposed to be a simple errand, but the tension between them was thick enough to cut with a knife.
Nick fiddled with the AUX, flipping through songs until Luke reached over and stilled her hand.
"Pick something already," he said, his fingers brushing hers.
The touch was brief but electric, and Nick pulled her hand back like she'd been burned.
"What's your problem?" she snapped.
Luke shrugged, trying to conceal his amusement. "No problem. You just seem... jumpy."
"I'm not jumpy," she said through gritted teeth.
"Okay?"
Nick gripped the phone a little tighter, silently cursing him and the stupid butterflies in her stomach.
~~
That evening, the family decided to have a movie night. Nick reluctantly joined, sinking into the sofa and snatching the bowl of popcorn.
Luke sat beside her, closer than necessary, his knee brushing against hers as he man-spread.
She stiffened, but he didn't move.
"Comfortable?" she asked, shooting him a pointed look.
"Very," he said innocently.
Andrea shushed them, and Nick tried to focus on the film. But every time Luke shifted, she was hyper-aware of the warmth of his thigh against hers.
Halfway through, he reached for the popcorn, knocking her arm with his.
"Do you mind?" she hissed under her breath.
"Not at all."
Nick gritted her teeth, determined to ignore him. But when the movie ended and she stood to leave, he softly caught her wrist.
"Hey," he said, locking eyes with her. "Relax. I'm just messing with you."
Her breath caught in her throat, and for a second, she couldn't look away.
"Whatever," she muttered, yanking her hand free and hurrying upstairs.
~~
Alex and Flynn barreled into the kitchen, sweaty and red-faced from playing street hockey.
"We crushed the neighbours!" Alex announced, dropping his stick and gloves on the floor.
Flynn followed suit, throwing himself onto one the barstools at the island. "Yeah, but Alex missed like ten open shots."
"Did not!"
"Did too!"
"Guys," Nick interrupted. "Gear in the laundry room. Now."
The boys groaned but trudged off, muttering under their breath. A minute later, Luke strolled in, hair damp from a shower. He grabbed a water bottle from the fridge and hopped to sit on the counter, watching Nick with his lopsided grin.
"You run a tight ship," he teased.
"Someone has to when my parents aren't home."
Before Luke could respond, the boys returned, still arguing.
"Whatever," Alex said, rolling his eyes. "At least I'm not as bad as Bryce."
Nick scowled, her stomach sinking. "What does Bryce have to do with anything?"
"Nothing," Flynn said, grabbing a cookie off the counter. "Just saying Alex is better than him at hockey."
Luke's brow furrowed, gaze flickering between Annika and the boys. "Who's Bryce?"
"No one," Nick glared at Alex.
"Her boyfriend," he said, completely ignoring her. "Well, ex-boyfriend. He was like super into hockey but I think he sucked. Nick used to help him with his stats for school."
Nick shot him another warning look. "Shut up, Alex."
Flynn, too young to realize the tension in the room, chimed in, "He coached Alex's team last year, but he's not as cool as you, Luke."
Annika could feel Luke's eyes on her and turned away, busying herself with wiping an already-clean counter. "Bryce is like... history. Can we drop it now?"
The boys shrugged, losing interest as they rushed off to play Xbox.
Luke lingered, arms crossed, watching her closely. "So... Bryce?"
Nick sighed, turning to face him. "It's not a big deal. We dated for a while. It didn't work out. End of story."
Luke nodded slowly, though his expression shifted slightly. "Sounds like a real winner."
Nick narrowed her eyes. "What's that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing... nothing. Just that he doesn't sound like much competition."
"Competition for what?"
He shrugged. "Relax, Annika."
"You're fucking insufferable," she mumbled, pushing past him and heading for the stairs.
~~
Luke was still thinking about Bryce.
He told himself it didn't matter, that it was none of his business, but the image of some guy hanging around Nick, talking hockey and being such an important part of her brothers' games, made his chest feel tight.
Jealousy wasn't a good look on him, but there it was, simmering just under the surface.
He was sprawled on the couch when Nick came downstairs again, her arms full of laundry. She stopped when she saw him, a guarded look on her face.
"Still brooding about Bryce?"
Luke smirked, trying to mask his annoyance. "Why would I brood about some guy I've never met?"
"Good question."
Her tone was casual, but the way she avoided his gaze told him she was more affected by their earlier conversation than she cared to admit.
She shook her head, going to walk past him. But just like the other night, he grabbed her wrist. "For the record, I don't think he deserved you."
Nick just stared at him, blinking slowly.
"Goodnight, Nick."
And with that, he got up and walked away, leaving a very confused Annika in his wake.
~~
The rain started in the late afternoon, a light drizzle that quickly turned into a full-on downpour.
By the time Nick got home from class, her sneakers were soaked, and her hair was plastered to her face. She shoved the door open with a grunt, muttering curses under her breath.
"Rough day?"
She startled, looking up to see Luke in the living room, also soaking wet, with his bag slung over his shoulder. He must've just gotten back from practice.
"Rain fucking sucks," she said shortly, kicking off her shoes and peeling off her wet socks and jacket.
"Not a fan of Jersey weather?"
"Not when I have to walk through it because someone took the car," she snarled, brushing past him on her way to the kitchen.
He followed, watching as she rummaged through a cabinet for a snack. "Where's the rest of your family?"
"Out," she said, grabbing a box of crackers. "My mom took the boys to the movies, and my dad's working late. Why?"
"Just curious."
Nick turned to look at him, but before she could reply, a sudden crack of thunder made the house shake. The lights flickered once, twice, and then everything went dark.
"You've got to be kidding me," she groaned, fumbling for her phone.
"Relax," Luke said, his voice steady. "It's just a power outage."
"No big deal for you, maybe," she muttered. "I've got work to do."
"Yeah? What kind of work?"
"The kind that requires electricity."
"Well, unless you can magically fix the power grid, I'd say you're stuck."
Nick rolled her eyes, but she couldn't ignore the flutter in her chest at the way his voice sounded in the dark--low and teasing, but with an edge she couldn't quite place.
"Great. Guess I'll just sit here and wait for the apocalypse."
"Or," Luke said, his voice closer now, "you could stop being so dramatic and light some candles."
Nick scowled, but another loud crack of thunder made her jump.
Luke laughed. "Scared of storms?"
"Of course not," she snapped, though her hands were trembling slightly.
"Right."
Nick shook her head, retreating to her bedroom, hoping to escape the weird tension that always settled between them. She lit a few candles, their warm glow casting flickering shadows on the walls, and tried to focus on her textbook.
But her thoughts kept drifting--to the storm, to the empty house, and to Luke.
She didn't even hear him knock.
"Hey," he said. "Mind if I hang out in here? It's kind of creepy downstairs."
Nick raised an eyebrow. "You're a professional hockey player, and you're scared of the dark?"
"Not scared. Just bored."
She sighed, gesturing for him to come in. He shut the door behind him and sat on the edge of her bed, his presence suddenly overwhelming in the small space.
For a while, they sat in silence, the sound of rain pounding against the windows filling the room.
"You're quiet," Luke said eventually.
"So are you."
He glanced at her, his eyes catching the candlelight in a way that made her stomach flip. "You've been weird around me lately."
"I'm always weird around you."
"Not like this," he whispered.
Her heart started thudding against her chest. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Nick."
She froze at the way he said her name--soft, almost pleading. When she finally looked at him, the intensity his gaze made her breath catch.
"Are we just gonna keep pretending this thing between us doesn't exist?"
"What thing?"
Luke huffed out a laugh, shaking his head. "You're really gonna make me say it?"
She didn't answer, and in the silence that followed, he got closer.
The air between them crackled, the storm outside quiet in comparison to the sound of her heart.
"I think about you... way more than I should."
Her breath hitched at his words, and he leaned in, his hand brushing hers.
"Nick," he whispered, his lips hovering just inches from hers. "Tell me to stop."
But she didn't.
Instead, she closed the distance, her mouth crashing against his in a messy kiss of spit and teeth.
His hands quickly found her waist, pulling her until they tumbled onto the bed. Hers found the curls at the nape of his neck. And outside, the storm faded into nothing.
~~
The storm had become nothing but a soft patter of rain against the windows. Nick lay across her bed, Luke's arm draped lazily across her waist as they caught their breath.
The room was warm and still dark, the flickering candlelight casting a soft glow over their bodies. Nick could feel the steady rise and fall of Luke's chest against her back, his skin sticky but still comforting against hers.
"You're sweaty," she mumbled, her voice muffled by the pillows.
Luke chuckled, the sound rumbling through his chest. "So are you."
She wrinkled her nose but didn't move, too content--and too tired--to care.
They lay there in comfortable silence for a while, the weight of what had just happened settling over them. It wasn't awkward, though. If anything, it felt... right.
Luke broke the silence. "You know, the candles really set the mood."
Nick snorted, turning her head to look at him. "Oh, totally. Very romantic."
"You don't think so?"
She rolled her eyes, biting her bottom lip. "Honestly? It might've been the most romantic sex I've ever had."
"High praise."
"Don't let it go to your head."
They fell quiet again, Nick tracing lazy circles on Luke's arm as his fingers skimmed along her hip.
"Can I tell you something?" Luke said suddenly.
"Sure."
"Your brothers... they told me."
"Told you what?"
"That you think I'm hot."
"They what?!"
"Yeah," Luke smirked, clearly enjoying her reaction. "Apparently, you were on the phone with your friend, and they overheard you saying I'm 'ridiculously, stupidly hot.'"
Nick stuffed her face in the pillows, groaning. "Oh my God. I'm gonna fucking kill them!"
"I mean," Luke continued, "I wasn't going to say anything, but now that we're here."
"Shut up."
He laughed, gently tugging her out of the pillows. "Hey, I'm flattered. Really."
"Don't be," she said, though the blush creeping up her neck betrayed her.
Luke leaned in, his lips brushing against her temple. "For the record, I think you're ridiculously, stupidly hot too. Still wanna kill your brothers?"
"Absolutely," she said, but her voice was lighter now, her cheeks still pink.
Although killing her brothers didn't really matter when she was laying in bed with Luke.
~~
Nick had no idea the thrill that sneaking around would give her.
There was something almost intoxicating about the stolen moments--the way Luke's touch would linger as he walked past her, the charged glances across the room, the whispered goodnights as they traded the bathroom.
It was dangerous and utterly addictive.
She hated how much she liked it.
Family dinners at the Thompsons were always chaotic (as were most things in their house). Andrea was bustling between the kitchen and the dining room, carrying plates of steaming food, while George tried to wrangle Alex and Flynn into their seats.
Luke sat across from Nick, his expression perfectly innocent as he buttered a piece of bread.
Nick didn't trust him for a second.
The meal started without incident--Andrea asking Luke about practice and an upcoming roadie, Flynn babbling about a school project, Alex loudly debating which NHL team had the best defence. Nick tried to focus on her food, keeping her gaze firmly away from the boy across the table.
Until she felt it.
A soft nudge against her ankle.
She froze, her fork halfway to her mouth, and glanced up. Luke's eyes were on his plate, the faintest hint of a smirk pulling at the corner of his lips.
Nick shifted her leg, but the nudge came again--this time more deliberate, slowly moving up her calf.
Her eyes narrowed.
Subtly, she kicked back.
Luke's smirk widened, but he didn't react otherwise, his foot pressing against hers in a way that made her stomach flip.
"Nick," Andrea said, snapping her out of the moment. "Pass the salad, please."
Annika blinked, her face burning as she shoved the salad bowl across the table.
"You okay?" her mom raised an eyebrow.
"Fine," Nick said quickly, glaring at Luke.
He looked up then, his smirk replaced with an innocent smile. "Everything alright, Nick?"
She wanted to throttle him.
Instead, she dropped her napkin on the floor, ducking under the table.
"What're you doing?" Alex asked as she crouched, fumbling for the napkin.
"Nothing," she muttered.
She grabbed the napkin--and Luke's ankle.
He jerked slightly, his leg pulling away, but she squeezed just hard enough to make her point before sitting back up.
"You sure everything's okay?" Andrea asked, her tone tinged with suspicion.
Nick forced a smile, her heart pounding. "Just peachy."
Across the table, Luke's smirk was back, but this time it was tinged with something darker--something that made Nick's breath catch in her throat.
~~
Later that evening, they weren't so lucky.
Andrea had sent the boys upstairs to clean their shared room while she and George tidied up the kitchen. Nick, seizing the opportunity, had slipped into Luke's room under the pretense of "helping him settle." As if he hadn't lived there for weeks.
Luke was waiting for her, his grin smug as he pulled her inside and shut the door.
"You're getting reckless," he teased, his hands sliding around her waist.
"You're the one who started it... and keeps tempting me," she shot back, her voice breathless as he backed her against the closet door.
"Is that so?"
Her lips found hers, and for a moment, she forgot all her worries--her parents, the risk, the fact that her brothers were just down the hall.
Until the footsteps started.
"Luke!"
Nick froze as Flynn's voice rang out.
"Shit," she whispered, shoving Luke back.
He stumbled slightly, but didn't stop smiling. "Relax."
The door burst open a second later, Flynn standing there with hockey stick in hand.
"There you are!" he exclaimed. "Alex and I want you too referee!"
Luke cleared his throat, stepping back even further from Nick. "Uh, yeah, for sure. Be right there."
Flynn squinted at his big sister. "What are you doing in here?"
"Helping him find something," she lied, her face burning.
Flynn shrugged. "Okay, whatever." He turned and darted back down the hall, yelling for Alex."
Nick let out a shaky breath, her head dropping back against the closet.
"That was close."
Luke chuckled, stepping closer again. "Too close?"
"Yes," she hissed, swatting his arm as he leaned in.
"You love it," he teased, his lips brushing her ear before pulling back. "I'll see you later."
And just like that, he was gone, leaving Nick to realize that she did, in fact, love it.
~~
The bathroom was filled with steam, despite the fan being on. The warm spray of the shower drowned out the storm that had started outside.
Nick leaned back against the cool tiled wall, her skin slick with water, as Luke pressed a line of soft kisses along her collarbone.
"This is so stupid," she mumbled, her hands sliding over his shoulders.
"Probably," he agreed, smirking as he pulled back to look at her. "But when have we ever done anything smart?"
"If we get caught--"
"We won't," he promised, pushing his lips against hers.
The sound of a knock at the bathroom door had them both pulling away.
"Luke?" Andrea's voice called from the other side of the door.
"Oh my God," Nick mouthed, her heart hammering inside her chest.
Luke held a hand up, silently telling her to stay silent, before clearing his throat. "Uh--yeah?"
"Have you seen Annika?" Andrea asked. "I thought she might be in her room, but she's not."
Luke shot Nick a panicked look, and she mimed strangling him, her lips forming "fix this."
"Uh, no," Luke said, scrambling for an excuse. "I think she said something about--uh--going for a walk?"
"A walk? In this weather?"
Luke winced, cursing himself for the lame excuse. "Yeah, she, uh...said she likes the rain. Said it's like refreshing or something?"
Nick buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking with silent laughter.
There was a long pause on the other side of the door, and Luke could practically feel Andrea's doubt seeping through the wood.
"Well, alright," she said finally, though her tone was still dubious. "Let me know if you see her, okay?"
"Will do," he said, waiting until he heard her footsteps retreating before turning to Nick.
She was doubled over with laughter now, her hands braced against the wall. "Refreshing?" she wheezed, still whispering. "That's the best you could come up with?"
Luke scowled. "You're welcome."
Nick pressed her chest against his, wrapping her arms around his neck. "Guess I should be grateful," she whispered, her lips brushing his ear. "You're quick on your feet when panicking."
"Yeah, well," his hands settled on her waist, "let's just hope your mom doesn't start asking more questions."
Nick smirked, leaning in to kiss him softly. "Guess we'll have to be more careful, huh?"
"Guess so."
~~
They'd barely recovered from their bathroom incident, but Luke seemed determined to push their luck even further.
They were standing in the kitchen, the rest of the family scattered--Andrea folding laundry upstairs, George in his office, and the boys glued to a hockey game on the TV.
Nick was just trying to make herself some tea, trying to ignore Luke's presence at the counter, when she felt him move closer.
"Relax," he wrapped his arms around her waist, leaning in his chin on her shoulder. "Nobody's around."
"Ugh, you're insane."
"Probably," he said.
"Luke, not here," she tried to escape his grasp, but his hockey training must've been paying off because he wouldn't budge.
"Why not?"
"Because we almost got caught earlier. You're pushing our luck. If someone walked i--"
Her words her cut off as he spun her around, her lips ghosting his. She crumbled instantly, her fingers gripping the counter as she kissed him back.
"Annika!"
"Fuck me," she groaned, jerking back so quickly she almost knocked the kettle over.
"Later," Luke retorted, earning a glare.
"What?" she called back.
"I need some help up here! Can you make your brothers' beds?"
"Uh--yeah! I'll be right there, Mom!" She pressed her palms against Luke's chest. "You're a bad influence."
He shrugged, moving to let her escape upstairs with her tea in hand, but not without giving her ass one last squeeze.
"I hate you."
"No you don't."
~~
Luke seemed determined to finish what they started in the shower, because he'd managed to be in the laundry room just as she was heading there to grab her mom a blanket.
"Are you fucking tracking me?"
"Just lucky timing."
"You're going to be the reason we get caught."
"Only if you scream," he teased, boosting her on top of the washing machine.
"Luke..."
"Relax," he pressed a kiss to her neck.
She really wanted to believe that they'd be in the clear down in the basement, but apparently her parents really wanted that spare blanket.
"Let's go, Nick! Chop, chop!" George shouted from the top of the stairs.
"Coming! Coming!"
"God, why is it so hard to get you alone?" Luke groaned.
"Welcome to my life."
~~
It was bound to happen sooner or later.
Nick knew their little game of sneaking around was risky, but she hadn't pushed it to stop. She blamed Luke entirely--his stupid smirk, his stupid face, the way he couldn't seem to ever keep his hands to himself.
But when the door to her bedroom flew open late one afternoon, she swore she had a heart attack.
"Annika!"
Her mom's voice was sharp, the shock in her tone unmistakable as she stood frozen in the doorway.
Nick and Luke jerked apart like they'd been electrocuted, the tangled sheets doing little to hide the situation.
"Mom!" Nick shrieked, her face going bright red as she scrambled to grab the blanket.
Andrea's eyes darted between them, her face covered in disbelief and mortification. "Luke?"
Luke, to his credit, managed a sheepish smile he sat up, adjusting his shirt and ruffling a hand through his hair. "Uh...hi, Andrea."
She blinked, her mouth opening and closing like she was trying to form words but she couldn't process what she was seeing.
"I--I'm gonna go see your father," she shook her head, backing out of the room and slamming the door shut behind her.
Nick groaned, burying her face in her hands. "We're so fucking dead."
Luke flopped back onto the bed, staring at the ceiling. "I told you to lock the door."
"Luke!"
"Yeah, this is... not ideal."
~~
The tension in the living room was palpable as Nick and Luke sat on the sofa, side by side, waiting for her parents to join them. The rest of the house was quiet for once--Alex and Flynn had been banished upstairs with strict instructions not to come down.
Andrea and George finally appeared, their expressions grim as they sat down across from the couple.
"Well," George began, clearing his throat. "This is, uh... unexpected."
Nick wanted to crawl in a hole and die.
Andrea crossed her arms, her gaze sharp as it landed on Luke. "I think we need to have a very serious conversation about boundaries."
Luke nodded quickly, the confidence he'd felt the last few days nowhere to be found. "Of course. Absolutely."
She turned to Nick, her tone just as firm. "Annika, you're an adult, and I understand that you're going to make your own decisions, but this is our home. And there are certain... expectations."
Nick groaned, slouching further into the couch. "Mom--"
"No," Andrea interrupted. "This is important. You're under our roof, and we expect you to be respectful of that."
George cleared his throat again, clearly uncomfortable. "What your mother is trying to say is, uh, we don't want anything... inappropriate happening here."
Nick buried her face in her hands, her voice muffled. "Can we not do this right now?"
"We absolutely need to do this right now," Andrea said, her tone leaving no room for argument.
She turned back to Luke. "We welcomed you into our home, Luke, and we expect you to behave like a gentleman. This... this cannot happen again. Do you understand?"
"Yes, ma'am," Luke said quickly, nodding so fervently it was a wonder his head didn't fall off.
"And that goes for you too, Annika," Andrea added, fixing her with a pointed look.
"I get it," she muttered, her face still hidden.
"Good," Andrea said, standing. "Because if I find you two in a... situation again, you're both going to regret it."
George stood as well, patting Luke awkwardly on the shoulder. "Just, uh, keep things... above board, okay?"
"Got it."
The parents left, leaving Nick and Luke in stunned silence.
After a long pause, Nick finally spoke, her voice still muffled by her hands. "I'm never leaving his house again."
"I don't know. I think that went pretty well," Luke let out a breathless laugh.
Nick finally dropped her hands to glare at him. "Pretty well? Are you kidding me?"
"Hey, at least your dad didn't kill me... or cut off my balls."
"You-- UGH!"
"If you say so."
~~
The shift in the house was obvious.
Andrea seemed to materialize whenever Luke and Annika were in the same room, her watchful gaze making Nick's skin crawl. George was less obvious but still lingered nearby, pretending to fiddle with the thermostat or check a sports score while clearly keeping tabs on them.
Even Alex and Flynn had picked up that something was wrong, their usual teasing replaced with curious glances and hushed whispering.
"Your mom's fucking scary," Luke said one evening, his voice low as he passed Nick in the hallway.
"You're telling me," she muttered, glancing over her shoulder to make sure nobody was around.
Luke smirked, leaning closer. "So... does this mean we're done?"
Nick frowned. "Done with what?"
"This," he gestured between them.
She hesitated, gnawing at her bottom lip. "I don't know. Do you really think it's worth getting caught again?"
Luke leaned against the wall, his grin softening into something more sincere. "Yeah. I do."
"You--"
"I'm insane, I know But I'm not ready to let this go. Are you?"
Her walls crumbled as he reached out, his fingers brushing against hers.
"Fine," she whispered. "But you have to keep it under wraps. I'm not dealing with my mom's wrath again."
"Deal."
~~
Keeping things under wraps was easier said than done.
Every interaction felt like a minefield, with Andrea constantly dissecting their every move.
Luke made it harder by being... well, Luke.
He would brush against her as he passed by. He'd lean in close to whisper something that wasn't remotely necessary.
It was maddening.
One night after dinner, they were in the kitchen, Nick washing dishes while Luke dried. Andrea was sitting at the table, her back to them, flipping through a magazine.
Luke bumped her hip with his, his voice low. "You're tense."
"Gee, I wonder why."
"She's not even looking," he grinned, reaching for a plate.
"She doesn't have to look. She knows everything."
"You're paranoid."
~~
Sitting in the backyard under the stars, finally having time together. Their hands were intertwined as they stared up at the sky.
"Is it really worth all the trouble?" Nick whispered.
"Of course it is," he replied, swinging their hands.
"Why?"
"Because I like you."
"Oh."
"Yeah, oh."
Nick didn't respond, but the smile on her face told him all he needed to know.
~~
A quiet afternoon in the Thompson house was hard to come by. The boys were upstairs playing video games, Andrea and George watching a show in their room.
Nick and Luke were taking advantage, lounging on the sofa and watching a movie.
Well, trying to watch a movie.
Luke kept nudging her with his knee, a silent plea for attention that she ignored for as long as she could.
"What?" she paused the movie, turning to look at him.
"Nothing. Just... thinking."
"Dangerous," she teased, though her stomach fluttered at the way he was looking at her--soft yet serious.
"Nick," he said, his voice lower. "I've been thinking about this for a while now."
"Okay..."
"I want to make this official," he said, his hand finding hers. "I know we've been sneaking around and keeping things quiet, but I... really, really like you. And I want to do this for real."
"You're asking me to be your girlfriend?"
"Yeah... I guess I am."
Nick hesitated. She knew this was risky, that saying yes meant inviting even more complications into their already chaotic situation.
But as she looked at him--his goofy grin, the way his thumb brushed over her knuckles--she knew she couldn't say no.
"Okay. Let's do it."
Luke's grin grew, and before she could second-guess herself, he leaned in and kissed her.
"Ew!"
They sprang apart, Flynn stood in the doorway, his face scrunched in disgust.
"What are you doing?" he demanded, pointing an accusatory finger at them.
Nick scrambled to her feet. "Flynn! Don't you knock?"
"This is the living room!" he retorted. "You can't kiss here!"
Luke cleared his throat, standing up and running a hand through his hair. "Uh, maybe we keep this between us, bud?"
"Why?"
Nick groaned. "Flynn--"
But he was already running toward the kitchen, yelling at the top of his lungs.
It didn't take long for Alex to join the chaos, and before Nick and Luke could figure out what to do, both boys were standing in front of their parents, firing off questions.
"If Luke and Annika get married, does that mean he gets to live here forever?" Flynn asked, his face alight with excitement.
"Wait, does this mean Luke is our brother now?" Alex added, his brow furrowed.
"Do you think Luke will take us to games since he's Annika's boyfriend?"
Andrea's eye widened, snapping to Nick and Luke, who were standing awkwardly in the doorway.
"Annika," she said slowly, her tone suspiciously calm, "is there something you'd like to tell us?"
Nick opened her mouth to respond, but no words came out. She glanced at Luke, silently begging him to say anything, but he looked just as panicked.
"Well?"
Nick swallowed harshly. "It's not what it looks like--"
"It's exactly what it looks like," Flynn interrupted. "They were kissing on the couch!"
"Flynn!" Nick hissed.
Andrea sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose as George rubbed the back of his neck.
"Annika," Andrea said firmly, "we talked about boundaries."
"I know! And we only kissed! We've been careful!"
"Careful? You were kissing in the living room!"
Flynn leaned over to Alex, whispering loudly. "Do you think they kiss a lot?"
Luke coughed, trying to stifle a laugh, but one sharp look from Andrea wiped the grin from his face.
"This isn't funny. We'll be having a conversation about this later."
"Great!" Nick threw her hands up.
~~
There they were, sat on the couch... again. Two angry parents in front of them like they'd just gotten in trouble for something stupid.
"Alright," Andrea said. "Start talking."
Nick glanced at Luke, who gave her a small, reassuring squeeze of the hand before she cleared her throat. "Look, I know this isn't ideal, but... Luke and I really like each other."
"Really like each other?"
Nick nodded, her voice steadier now. "Yes, and we've been trying to keep it low-key because we didn't want to make things weird for everyone else."
Andrea snorted. "Well, that worked out great."
"I know it's a lot to ask," Luke said, leaning forward. "But I care about Nick. A lot. And I don't want to mess up the trust you've shown me by letting me stay here, and I don't want to make things uncomfortable for your family. But I also don't want to pretend I don't... like Nick."
Her gaze softened slightly, though her expression remained guarded. She looked at George, who shrugged.
"They're adults," he said simply. "I'm not thrilled about it, but it's not like we can tell Nick who she can and can't date."
Andrea sighed, hands on her hips. "I guess that's true. But if this is going to continue, there are going to be rules."
Nick and Luke exchanged a quick glance, relief washing over them.
"Rules?" Nick asked cautiously.
"Yes, rules. First, no sleeping in each other's rooms. Doesn't matter if you're both adults, it's my house, that's my rule."
"Understood," Luke nodded.
"Second," she continued, "keep the PDA to a minimum. Especially in front of the boys. I don't need Alex and Flynn asking any more awkward questions."
"Agreed."
"Third...if I catch you breaking these rules, this arrangement is over. Got it?"
"Got it," they said in unison.
"Alright. As long as you respect the rules, I won't stand in your way."
"Thank you," Luke said sincerely.
"Don't screw this up, kid," George whispered to him as he left.
"I won't."
~~
A few months later, the whole Thompson family was packed into The Rock, cheering as the Devils faced off against the Pens.
Alex and Flynn were decked out in jerseys, cheering as loud as they could, while Andrea and George clapped politely whenever Luke's name was mentioned.
Nick sat by her brothers, trying (and failing) to hide her smile every time Luke skated by.
When he scored late in the first period, Flynn jumped out of his seat, yelling at the top of his lungs.
"THAT'S MY SISTER'S BOYFRIEND!"
Nick groaned, pulling her Hughes jersey over her red face as the people around them laughed.
But when Luke glanced at their section, his grin wide as he pointed toward her, she couldn't help but cheer just as loudly.
Because, for better or for worse, Luke was a large part of her life now. And she wouldn't have it any other way.

♡Sacrifice Tomorrow♡
pairing: bf!matt x reader
summary: matt had work early tomorrow but you didn't want him to leave.. (it's basically based on the song :)
as you and matt were cuddled together on your bed watching netflix, his phone buzzed with a notification. he checked his phone to find a message from chris.
but to his surprise it was already 2:30 am, time flew quickly and none of you felt it running. but matt thought that it'll be preferable if he left now if he didn't want to be tired during that meeting.
"i have to leave babe, a sudden meeting popped up and it's too early"
matt never wanted to get up from that comfortable warm blanket you had wrapped around you both, it was a long day for the two of you and you deserved some time together to just relax and have a rest from your busy lives.
"do you really have to..?" you asked with clear disappointment in your voice that you couldn't hide.
matt felt sad cause he had to leave you "I'm so sorry.. I would stay with you forever if i could, but i should probably get some sleep"
he walked over to the dresser but as he went to grab his keys you said, "let's sacrifice tomorrow for tonight ", at this point you were so done with his work and all those sudden meetings and requirements. all you ever wanted was for your boyfriend to unwind all that stress and spend some decent time together without interruptions.
"never mind you obligations, please just stay here by my side" you pleaded for him to stay, no longer caring if he missed that stupid meeting.
matt froze in place after hearing your words, clearly thinking twice at your offer. you noticed that he was hesitant about sleeping over but you had already set your mind that he's not going anywhere.
"c'mon matt..just give into temptation. it's alright" before he opened his mouth to protest you already knew what he was going to say. "don't worry, i got clothes that you could borrow.. so?"
he didn't have a choice any more, after all he could never say no to you. matt knew that the second he leaves that door, he'll quickly miss you so why not change his mind?
"we can sleep all day so baby please don't go.." matt didn't let you finish your repeated ask. he just took off his hoodie and jumped back on the bed. you couldn't help but let a wide smile appear on your face cause of his action.
"you know what.. that meeting will do just fine without me". he grabbed his phone to text chris telling him not to expect him to show up tomorrow, before resuming the movie you were watching previously without caring for the consequences, just knowing that he'll get to see you after waking up was everything he needed.

Little Loner
Pairing(s): Jace Wayland x fem!reader
Warnings: clary being jealous but then cupid??, I wrote this while sleep deprived, fluff at the end, Clary x Simon if you squint.
Words: 1,743
Author's Note: I finally finished the requests. Now have some drafts while I work on sequels and stuff <3

Jace leads Clary to Hodge, but hesitates when he sees an open door. He finds himself pausing to admire the scene, leaning on the door frame with a crooked smile. Clary moves to get a better view and is confused.
A girl sits in a windowsill, her pencil hitting the paper lightly as she sketches out the scenery outside the window. The light appears to angle just right, giving her an almost angelic presence. Black runes cover her skin, some disappearing to hide under her clothes.
Clary leans over to Alec and whispers. "Who is that?"
Alec simply nods a little. "Y/N. Jace has a thing for her, but he's never acted on it." Clary feels her heart break a little. "Shame, really. She likes him too, but they're both too stubborn to be the one to confess."
"Oh..."
"My advice," Alec looks between her and the room, "stay away from Jace."
He moves on before she can ask much else, walking along the halls and calling to Jace quietly. Jace is brought back to reality as he gives one last look into the room before venturing on.
"So, Y/N..." Clary tries.
She doesn't miss when Jace blushes slightly, "another Shadowhunter. She's been here a long time, however she really only talks to me."
"Why's that?"
He chuckles a little but shakes his head. "That's none of my business to tell. She's a great person when you get to know her though." That's all the information he gives before they reach their destination. He opens the door and gestures inside with a nod.
His expression stays neutral, stoic as he explains, "You may find Hodge a little eccentric, but he's one of the greatest Shadowhunters that's ever lived." He looks down at the cloth in her hand and his brows furrow. "Here, give me that."
She walks inside of the giant room, her body and eyes exploring. The two boys walk in after her. They watch her carefully. Despite her distance, Clary can still hear Jace and Alec by the door.
"Don't lead this one on while you pursue your little loner. You'll get her hopes up, and if she decides to stay...the rune to fix a broken heart is the most painful one." She could practically feel Jace roll his eyes.
"I'm not leading her on."
"Oh? Is that so? Because I don't normally go around flirting and being handsy with random people, Jace." Alec warned. "It's obvious, the way Clary looks at you. I'd tone down your 'lack of leading her on' before she gets the wrong idea."
The doors shut suddenly, causing Clary to flinch, and Alec storms off down the hall, leaving Jace to think over his words. The more he thought about it, the more he tried to deny it.
Jace opens the door, "The Silent Brothers are ready for her."
When Clary and Jace set off for their next location, she noticed a new companion had replaced Alec. It was the girl from before. The girl that Jace liked.
"I didn't expect you to be joining us..." She tries to make conversation, but Y/N barely acknowledges her.
"I admire your attempt, but she won't talk. Not unless she's comfortable with you." Jace smiles at the girl in question, who smiles to herself but stays quiet.
"How long would that take?"
"Patience is a virtue, Clary." Jokes Jace. "I suppose I was the first person who ever really tried, so there's not much to go off of. She's coming with us because I asked her too."
The redheaded girl can't help but glance between the two every now and then. She isn't sure whether she feels jealous or wants them to be together, but she can say one thing for sure; The tension was nauseatingly strong.
"Why didn't Hodge come with us?"
"He hasn't left the institute in years." Jace shrugs as he continues walking. "Some say it's a spell."
"He's agoraphobic." Y/N giggles at Clary's bluntness, leading to the ginger giving her a small smile. One she returned. They stop and turn, Jace crossing his arms while he waits.
"Is that him?" Clary asks.
Jace follows her gaze and shakes his head. "No, that's Harold, the groundskeeper." He tilts his head, leaning in a bit, "that's him."
She looks up a little and feels a small shiver of unease crawl up her spine. A comforting hand is felt on her shoulder, and she's met with Y/N's smile when she turns her head. The action leaves her wondering how obvious her discomfort was, but she still is thankful.
"Are you sure you want to go through with this?" Clary looks to the two as though asking for help, but nods regardless. "We will help you to remember."
The trio follow the tall robed man, Clary a little more hesitant. Y/N turns, kind smile still standing, and lifts a finger to the middle of her lips. Clary nods and follows behind.
Along the way she trips, "Ow!"
Jace turns his head instantly, shushing her. "You'll wake the dead."
Clary rolls her eyes. She catches Y/N giving her an apologetic shrug, the girl nodding with her head to continue.
"I can't believe this place is just outside of the city..."
She follows the duo to the window like ledge they looked through. Jace's voice catches her off guard, "Welcome to the City of Bones." His breath is right next to her ear, sending her hairs to stand on their ends.
"This is where the Silent Brothers draw their power, from the bones and ashes of Shadowhunters."
"All of them are buried here?"
"Yes." Jace looks to the wall, "One day," he taps a skull, making Y/N giggle, the sound eliciting a smile to slide upon his pink lips, "that's gonna be me."
Clary stops to look at the skeleton. Sensing her unease, Y/N urges her forward with a light touch. Clary stops a few steps forward, inspecting the room from entryway.
"This is as far as we go." She looks at Jace, and he assures her, "You'll be fine."
"So you've done this before?"
Y/N and Jace exchange a glance. She dawns an apologetic look as shakes her head and Jace replies, "No."
Clary decides to continue to try and talk to Y/N, "Have you ever met Magnus Bane?"
The girl only shakes her head.
"You know... I'm quite jealous of you." Clary admits with a laugh. Y/N tilts her head in confusion, prompting Clary to continue. "I thought Jace was into me, and if I'm being honest, I'm really into him but... I'd be stupid to stand in your guys' way."
Her brows furrow, even more confused than before. Clary's hopes range from high to doubtful, there's a chance Alec was wrong, that she didn't have feelings for him, but she saw the way the two looked at each other. She might've been naïve and clouded in her conflicting feelings, but she wasn't blind.
"Jace likes you too. And honestly...you should go for it." She looks away, ashamed of her own assistance in helping the guy she liked be with someone else. However, she doesn't have time to mope, when a voice she hasn't heard before causes her to snap her eyes back to Y/N's face.
"Is it that obvious?" A shy expression, laced with a little embarrassment, greets her.
"You-"
"I talk, yes." She chuckles. "Jace wasn't lying. I mostly talk to him, but after I realized my feelings for him, I started to confide in Alec. My only problem was that I didn't realize Alec also had feelings for Jace... But, Alec saw how much I love Jace, and told me that he had found interest in someone else. Whether that's true or not, I don't know, but, my feelings for Jace have always been around since then. I'm just...not too sure what to do about it."
Clary nods understandingly, and places her hand atop Y/N's. "Talk to him."
Y/N thinks about it for moment, and then nods. "Thank you."
"Hey. Can we talk?" Jace turns, nodding when he realizes it's Y/N. The blond looks around the infirmary, making sure Simon and Clary are accounted for one more time before he returns to facing her. He follows her to the study, sitting beside her on the piano seat.
"What's wrong?"
Her fingers press into the keys, a slow recollection of a piece by Bach. "It's nothing... I spoke to Clary-'
"You talked to Clary?" Y/N giggles at his dumbfounded expression. "M'sorry, that just caught me a little off-guard, you don't normally talk to anyone else."
"That's fair. Basically, she gave me some advice to a problem I have, not that I asked her for it- she actually noticed it- anyways, after Simon and the vampires and everything- I guess- my point is, Jace..."
"Yes?" His eyes were laced with concern, no longer amused by her sudden socializing.
"I like you. Like, really really like like you." She bit her lip. "Like...I'm in love with you."
Y/N stared at Jace, waiting for his answer. She grew nervous as time started to feel slower. The seconds felt like they were snail's paced, so close yet so far away. Sweat dripped down her forehead and her heartbeat rang in her ears. It was all so overwhelming until-
"I'm in love with you too."
"You what?"
Jace smiled shyly. "I'm in love with you too. I've been for a long time now." His eyes trace over her lips, the distance between them closing gradually. He hovers above her lips when his eyes meet hers again.
It's all in slow motion and superspeed at the same time. She lets go of control and lets her instincts take the reigns. Her lips crash into his and he lets out a surprised groan. Their eyes both close as they kiss one another, their lips partaking in a dance they somehow know. By the time they pull apart, they're out of breath and their eyes are blown.
"How long?"
She blinks. "Pardon?"
"How long have you been waiting to do that?"
"If I'm being honest, a month or so after we met. What about you?" Y/N giggles.
"Since we first met."
Clary leans against the door, heart half broken and half full, yet content with herself. Maybe she should look into what Simon's benefits are.

*𝙈𝙪𝙨𝙩 𝙃𝙖𝙫𝙚 𝘽𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙒𝙞𝙣𝙙*
Pairing: Changbin x Reader (GN)
Genre: Comfort?
Warnings: Slight mentions of depression and anxiety. That’s about it. Sorry for any mistakes
A/N: This has been in my idea folder for so freaking long! This was 100% inspired by “Must have been the wind by Alec Benjamin” such a good song! I hope yall enjoy this!
-🖤
Neither of you really knew each other. Only exchanging pleasantries as you passed by one another. Always a small waves and a smile. You’ve barely even said a few words to one another in the almost year living in the same building. You both keeping to yourselves.
He’s noticed in the past few days of seeing you that you don’t seem yourself. Or at least the small bit of yourself that he knew of. You have seemed really down lately. He even caught you wiping your tears away when he had stepped into the elevator as you got out. He wanted to ask if you were alright but you quickly left the elevator before he could.
His apartment was right above yours he could always hear you talking softly or listening to music. It made him almost calm hearing another person at times.
He hadn’t seen you leave today like normal. You both always leaving for work about the same time. When he had gotten back from work later than normal plopping on his bed he let out a sigh. The quietness becoming deafening around him. The quiet didn’t last long, soft sobs could be heard from below. He knew it was you, he wanted so badly to make sure you were alright. He didn’t know why he cared so much but he did. Maybe it was the way your smile brightened his day. Or the way he secretly hopes to see you before work. You’ve become a daily joy in his life and to hear you crying made him upset.
He got up pacing back in forth wondering what he should do. Would it be weird to check in on you? After the back and forth in his mind he finally made it up. He was gonna check on you.
He knocked on your door, a thousand things running through his mind on what to say. When you finally answered he could see how red your eyes were. Tear stains still lingering on your flushed face. “Uh hi” he said nervously.
“Hi” you said softly back looking anywhere but his face.
“Listen I know we don’t know each other but I could.. hear you crying. Are you alright?” He stammered out.
“I- I uhm wasn’t crying.. must have.. been the wind or something” you lied.
He studied your face for a second knowing damn well that you were lying. You felt embarrassed. You didn’t like crying around anyone, feeling like a burden if you weren’t always just happy.
“Well if you want to talk I’m here” he said with a soft smile. His kind words really jabbing at you. Why was he being so nice? He didn’t know you, he didn’t have to come down. But he did. He came down to basically a total strangers place to see if they were ok. Just the pure sweetness of this made the tears flow again.
His eyes went wide his body moving before he could stop himself. He wrapped his arms around you as you cried making you sob even harder. He rubbed your back letting you get it all out. He pushed your door closed behind him, to make sure no one else would walk by.
“Ssh sh it’s alright, you’re alright” he said softly still rubbing your back. “Wanna go sit down? You can tell me all about what’s wrong if you want. No judgement. I’m here to listen” he said with that sweet smile you’ve grown fond of.
You nodded bringing him over to your couch. As you composed yourself you sighed softly. “Nothings really wrong, I mean.. it’s just..” you tried finding the words. “I have really bad depression and anxiety.. it’s just been really bad the last few days and it all just came crashing down today.” You admitted.
He listened taking your hand in his to comfort you a bit. “You still got up today though, you’re still here and that’s something to be proud of” he said.
His words comforted you even more, making you smile for the first time in a few days. He sounded so genuine.
“And I can knock another one off if you wanna” he said smiling. You looked at him a bit confused. “How about I treat you to some ice cream? Then you’ll have eaten today.. I guess it’s not food food but ice cream makes everything better” he says smiling even bigger.
“You don’t have to do that” you said.
“I know but I want to, plus means we can get to know each other more. Yeah?” He said hopeful.
“Alright” you said smiling at him.
You got yourself together wiping your face and putting on better clothes. “Oh hey, by the way, I’m changbin” he said.
“We really never introduced ourselves huh? I’m y/n” you said.
“Well y/n shall we get some ice cream?” He said putting his hand out.
“We shall.” You giggled.
After this day you both had become really close. Making movie nights and gaming nights. You both always hung out even just coming over to one another’s house to sit in comfortable silence. It was nice. Nice to have someone to talk, nice to have someone there that wouldn’t judge and just be there.

broadchurch from daisy hardys perspective is so sad. she grows up with 2 presumably loving but probably dysfunctional parents who are broken apart when a girl her age, ELEVEN, is murdered down the road. she witnesses her parents falling apart and stops seeing them as much. she's bounced between friends houses because her parents are always at work - which makes them even more miserable when she DOES see them. her father finds the girls body and almost drowns trying to fish it from a river. her mother is actively, on the same day, cheating with a co-worker. then, once the case is FINALLY "solved" her father's name is ran through the mud because of something her MOTHER did. his reputation is completely destroyed and he leaves town. she probably believes what her friends and the papers are saying, so believes her father must be a disgrace who has also just abandoned her. she cuts contact with him, despite him trying to call her and for YEARS doesn't properly see him. he misses her turning into a teenager. THEN, THE NEXT THING SHE KNOWS, HE'S ABOUT TO DIE????? and having a possibly fatal surgery??? which phew! goes well, he lives, she sees him - BUT ALSO the one time she sees him, some MAN appears to tell her that he's a failure and responsible for his daughters death?? HUH?? and then some sort of large incident happens that results in her falling out with her mother and jumping to her father's custody - something which might have happened more than once, based on what alec says in s3??? and now she's in this fuck-all tourist town with her dad and her new friends LEAK HER NUDES and everyone starts hounding her and harassing her to the degree where she tries to fuck off back to sandbrook (rightfully) JUST FOR HER DAD TO TEAR HER TICKET IN FRONT OF HER?? TRAPPING HER THERE?? poor GIRL oh my god. at least she has lesbianism (chloe latimer) tho

Hey, I'm here with a Hot Take you may need to sit down for: I don't think Kit should still be a Shadowhunter by the end of TWP
Looking back, I don't think he's ever indicated he personally feels like he belongs as one. He chooses to become a Shadowhunter in LA because of Ty, because he thinks it solidifies him as a member of the Blackthorns and their community, and will let him fit in with the people he believes he belongs with. Then, we go to Devon with Tessa and Jem, and he tells Jem that if he gives Kit more time, he can be more like Will. He trains because he thinks it will make him more like Will Herondale, who Tessa and Jem are known to love. Then, he asks Jace to help him be stronger because he isn't a kid anymore and that being a Shadowhunter is how he protects his loved ones
Being a Shadowhunter is a means to an end for Kit - it's how he lives up to his last name and protects his loved ones from the other part of him, the First Heir part that puts them in danger. And, yeah, he's good at it and he probably finds something in the training, but he's not Jace and Emma who enjoy Shadowhunting because they enjoy being strong warriors, and he's not Alec and Simon and everyone else who do it to help others. The only people Kit wants to help are the ones he's close to, and he shouldn't be made to feel he's responsible for fighting demons because that's the only connection he has to his family and friends, and the only reason they'll keep him around
'Cause, I don't know about you, but I think that's just gonna make his already apparent abandonment issues and identity crisis worse. He's already always being told who or what he is, whether that be the Lost Herondale or the descendant of the First Heir. Hell, I think it was Diana who said Kit has to get used to not being able to grieve his father because "he's a Shadowhunter"
He's 18, he shouldn't feel like being a Shadowhunter is the only direction he can take in life. And he's in a perfect place to explore everything else he can be - neither Jem nor Tessa are the traditional "Shadowhunter"
You can want him to be a badass and a famous Shadowhunter people revere and rule Faerie - and I respect that - but I want him to save the world and then realize he wants a job at an ice cream place in Devon where he makes the visiting children laugh by making faces out of sprinkles and twisting their napkins into animals while his boyfriend reads a book at one of the tables. I want him to walk dogs for fun because he likes running after them in the parks and Mina loves petting them
I want him to choose to do something for himself, and I want him to know that the people he loves will want him and support him regardless
#shit this was LONG#hello the two people who read this entire thing - i'm very passionate about this if you couldn't tell#kit herondale#the shadowhunter chronicles#tsc#the wicked powers#ty blackthorn#twp

NOTE: I had originally planned on adding my Natsume Yuujinchou fic recs to this one too, but I've been reading way too many recently so I'll be creating a post just for that fandom in a couple of weeks. Keep your eye out for that.
The Nine Worlds series (Hands of the Emperor)
two days five hours by ariex09
Jullanar didn’t realize anything was wrong until the newspaper boy yelped in panic, until she was turning back to see the paper Fitzroy was holding on fire, a conflagration held in one hand, his eyes liquid gold with magic and his voice perfectly empty when he said, “No. That can’t be right. There’s been a mistake.”
-
In which an adventure in progress is thoroughly derailed by news of the presumed death of the Viceroy of Zunidh.
Plausible Deniability and Pineapple by toffeecape
In which the Last Emperor of Astandalas and Lord of Zunidh is an unbonded sentinel (as if he didn't have enough problems) and Cliopher sayo Mdang rejects the entire classist and culturally imperialistic sentinel/guide paradigm out of hand and offers his Radiancy… almost the exact same thing, honestly, but done their way.
Shadowhunters
To serve and protect by ToTheStarsWriting
From the moment there’d been shadowhunters, there had been the guardians. Those willing to go above and beyond their people, their Institutes. Ones willing to bind themselves through magic and rune with a warlock. To pledge their lives to one another, and to the fight against the hordes of hell.
These days the Guardians weren’t nearly so common. It was rare for a warlock to be able to find a shadowhunter who would willingly do the oath with them. Even if some thought it a great honor in the beginning. that had clearly changed. Now, the only time Alec saw any hint of the peace that was said to once exist between the denizens of the shadow world was at events like these. One week, every five years, where all parties gathered together in a ritual as old as their race.
Alec had been interested, once, until he realized what it would mean. Giving up his life, his Institute, his family? A Guardian had to be prepared to let all of that go. Their life became the whim of their bonded and the War. Where their bonded went, they went. And with a lot of the new rules against Downworlders, that meant that there would be so many places a shadowhunter gave up ever seeing again. He couldn’t abandon his people like that.

“Oh, and Jean?” The guidance counselor's voice has him pausing in the doorframe. “Kevin Day has restarted at this school while you were suspended. Both your guardian and his father have requested that you stay away from him. There will be consequences if you do not heed these wishes.”
Jean can’t keep the shock off of his face as he stalks out of the office. The last time he had seen Kevin, he was depositing him on Wymack’s doorstep with a poorly bandaged hand, a note he had stolen from Tetsuji’s office, and enough benzos in him to stop him from fighting Jean the whole way there.
For about a month after that, Jean held onto hope that Kevin would come back for him, or that he would tell someone about Evermore and they would all get out.
That hope has long since died.

Ghosts AU
(Youtube has been showing me scenes from a show - I think "Ghosts" - in my shorts, and my brain began working)
Okay, so Magnus can not see ghosts. But his ex-girlfriend Camille could. (because, you know, somehow all the people in series who can see ghosts are always nice and good people, so why not have a bitch like Camille for a change?). And when they moved into an old mansion that had lots of ghosts, Magnus was all for helping Camille help the ghosts. Did all kinda things that Camille said the ghosts wanted so they may move on. But of course Camille lied about most of it. Even told Magnus that the ghosts don't really like him. Which is a lie, of course, they wish he would break up with her he deserves better! Anyway, one day Camille just up and leaves, at least leaves a break up letter telling him she is going to live with her lover who she has been cheating on him with for a long time. Weeks after that, Magnus realizes he needs a roomate or three, in order to generate enough money to pay off the mansion and all the things Camille made him cough up money for. Enter Alec, who can see ghosts as well.

“Alec?” Magnus was staring at him. He had dispatched the remaining Iblis demons, and the square was empty but for the two of them. “Did you just—did you just save my life?”
Alec knew he ought to say something like, Of course, because I’m a Shadowhunter and that’s what we do, or That’s my job. Jace would have said something like that. Jace always knew the right thing to say. But the words that actually came out of Alec’s mouth were quite different—and sounded petulant, even to his own ears. “You never called me back,” he said. “I called you so many times and you never called me back.”
Magnus looked at Alec as if he’d lost his mind. “Your city is under attack,” he said. “The wards have broken, and the streets are full of demons. And you want to know why I haven’t called you?”
Alec set his jaw in a stubborn line. “I want to know why you haven’t called me back.”
Magnus threw his hands up in the air in a gesture of utter exasperation. Alec noted with interest that when he did it, a few sparks escaped from his fingertips, like fireflies escaping from a jar. “You’re an idiot.”
“Is that why you didn’t call me? Because I’m an idiot?”
“No.” Magnus strode toward him. “I didn’t call you because I’m tired of you only wanting me around when you need something. I’m tired of watching you be in love with someone else—someone, incidentally, who will never love you back. Not the way I do.”
“You love me?”
“You stupid Nephilim,” Magnus said patiently. “Why else am I here? Why else would I have spent the past few weeks patching up all your moronic friends every time they got hurt? And getting you out of every ridiculous situation you found yourself in? Not to mention helping you win a battle against Valentine. And all completely free of charge!”
“I hadn’t looked at it that way,” Alec admitted.
“Of course not. You never looked at it in any way.” Magnus’s cat eyes shone with anger. “I’m seven hundred years old, Alexander. I know when something isn’t going to work. You won’t even admit I exist to your parents.”
Alec stared at him. “I thought you were three hundred! You’re seven hundred years old?”
“Well,” Magnus amended, “eight hundred. But I don’t look it. Anyway, you’re missing the point. The point is—”
But Alec never found out what the point was, because at that moment a dozen more Iblis demons flooded into the square. He felt his jaw drop. “Damn it.”
Magnus followed his gaze. The demons were already fanning out into a half circle around them, their yellow eyes glowing. “Way to change the subject, Lightwood.”
“Tell you what.” Alec reached for a second seraph blade. “We live through this, and I promise I’ll introduce you to my whole family.”
Magnus raised his hands, his fingers shining with individual azure flames. They lit his grin with a fiery blue glow. “It’s a deal.”

Poly Volturi x Reader
"That's just stupid." Alec said huffing looking at the table in distaste.
"You have to draw four. That's the rules." You Said shrugging.
You, Alec, Jane, Felix and Demetri were currently playing Uno. It took a while convincing everyone to play. Sure you live in a huge castle with the love of your lives but you are still human. You get bored. While Felix was down to play immediately the others were disinterested in playing with you. You got responses like "That's foolish, I have much better things to do, my love." From Caius.
A simple "No." From Jane.
"I'm sorry but I'm busy right now, beautiful." From Demetri.
"It sounds like a waste of time." From Alec.
You even asked Aro and Marcus. Marcus just straight up said he was too old for that shit in so many words. And Aro said he was too hungry to play games but maybe later.
All the rejection from everyone put you in a sad mood. It's not like you could have friends in the Castle that wouldn't eat you the moment you get a paper cut. The receptionist is a bitch. And there aren't any more humans you have access to. So the fact that everyone said no you were distant with everyone. They all noticed.
You stopped going to trails with Caius. You stopped attempting to give Jane love. You stopped asking Alec to use his powers so you'd be entertained by the dark fog. You stopped asking Felix for piggyback rides. You stopped attempting to play hide and seek with Demetri.
It had been days since you spoke more than 2 words at a time to any of them. You knew it was affecting them because of the tension that rested upon the castle in a thick fog. They were quick to temper. Quicker than normal that is. And that's saying a lot.
Marcus had asked you why you hadn't been to any of the trials lately. As it happened to be one of your favorite parts of the day. "I just haven't been in the mood." You told him. He's been on this godforsaken earth way too long to be able to know when to call bullshit. But nonetheless the less he let it go.
After that you noticed that your love's would attempt to talk to you more. Not just brushing it off as human attitude as Caius would call it. It was small talk but it was an effort.
"Yes I'm fine Demetrius stop asking me." You huffed slightly irritated.
"Did you eat today?" He questioned a little squint in his eyes.
"Yes I eat everyday." You rolled your eyes, gathering the book you were reading from the cold castle floor you were sitting on.
There was the random corner in the Castle that you would just sit in and watch as people- vampires walked through the halls. It had a lot of traffic coming through it which was what you loved. Cauis had offered to have something built for you so you wouldn't have to sit on the floor all the time. But you would always shake your head and tell him "No, just keep it clean for me please." And so he did.
"I fed today. The humans blood was a bit bitter but nonetheless tasty." Demetrius said following you in your attempts to run away from the conversation.
"You sound like a child."
"And yet here you are acting like one." He snapped.
"I'm sorry?" You said, stopping in your tracks turning to face him.
"You've had this horrible attitude for almost a week for the stupidest thing!" He stated staring at you with his sharp eyes.
"I have not!" You said in attempts to defend yourself.
"Yes you have, don't bother denying it, the whole castle can smell it!" He yelled.
"The lies you tell!" You practically screamed upset you were getting called out.
"Oh really?" Demetrius questioned before you could even blink he had grabbed you by your waist and next you knew you were in a room full of all your mates.
Once you finally felt your two feet touch the ground you couldn't help but get angry.
"What the fuck is this an intervention?!" You screamed.
“If that’s what you want to call it, then so be it.” Jane said in a straightforward tone.
“Oh my god what do you guys want?! I just want to be left alone but you all keep bothering me!” You yelled.
“Us bothering you? You were practically begging for attention a couple of days ago now you want to be left alone? Foolish!” Caius yelled, taking you back a bit.
He would yell but he would refrain from yelling at you the best he could. So him yelling at you right now kinda shocked you.
“You wanted to play that card game the other day right? That was when you started acting like such a brat, so we're going to fix that and play it.” Alec stated holding his head high.
“No thanks, I'm good on that.” You said going to turn around to walk away.
“Sit down!” Your mates yelled collectively making you stop in your tracks.
“Sit down please, I’ll shuffle the cards to start.” Felix said in a softer tone.
That was about an hour ago. To not even wanna be sitting here right now it was quite entertaining watching your mates fight with each other about the fact that another was kicking the others ass.
“I will do no such thing. I've drawn four four times!” Alec yelled, upset he was losing.
“It’s the rules of the game you have to Alec.” Jane said, rolling her eyes at her brother's temper. She was just happy she was winning. For now..
You were all sitting at a grand dining room table. Well Alec, Jane, Felix, Caius and Demtruis were. You were actually sitting on the table. Caius put you up there in attempts to make it harder for you to run away if you tried.
You did.
You almost hit your head on the way down.
“I don’t see the appeal of such a game, the cards don’t make sense.” Cauis said busy reading the rules that were on the back of the box.
“Don’t look at my hand! That’s an immature thing to do!” Dem yelled at Felix who kept leaning over to see what cards Dem had in his hand.
You had won the first round so you were busy spectating.
“Immature!? It’s not like we're taking a test!” Felix yelled back, plopping down in his seat.
“You're trying to cheat!” Dem yelled back furrowing his eyebrows.
“Cheat?! I am no cheater! Tell him Amore mio!” Felix said, turning to face you.
“You were cheating, I saw you.” You said blandly.
“Your human eyes don’t under the actions of mine-”
“Her human eyes are perfectly fine!” Dem yelled coming to your defense.
Tuning yourself out of the conversation-well the constant bickering. You found yourself just watching your mates. All were yelling or frowning about something but you couldn’t help the smile that came to your face. Neither of them could stand human games. They hated it with the most of them. Minus video games Alec, Felix and Dem said that those don’t count. Though you always tell them they do, they insist that they don’t. A fight you could never win.
All of your mates came together to do one simple thing that you’ve wanted to do for months. Once they saw how much the disconnection to just one human thing hurt you, They came together to try to make you feel wanted and seen. Though they can’t see the appeal at all there trying for you. And that’s all you could ever ask for.
“That’s not four Alec!” You yelled when you saw him try to cheat his way into just grabbing two cards.
“Oh come on! I’m never going to win!” Alec yelled back.
“Not my problem.”
“Maybe winning is just not in your line of blood.” Cauis said with a slight smirk.
“What’s that supposed to mean?!” Jane and Alec said at the same time turning their sharp red eyes at Caius.
“I mean-”
“Nope! Nope! Draw two more cards Alec I’ll help you win!” You rushed out attempting to try to keep the peace. Well as much peace as it was going to get in the room.
“That’s not fair!”
“I need help as well, I deserve it!”
“So were picking favorites now?!”
“Felix, stop looking at my cards!”
“You can’t pick sides!”
You can’t even lie to yourself you had missed them so much. And the smile on your face told no lies.

Revenge
A/N - This is part of the Ocean Eyes Series, it will be a two parter for sure. I hope you like it
Summary - Eris had been found, and Azriel take his revenge
Warnings - A pinch of angst in this one, but they'll be fluff later
Cassian's POV
Cassian could feel a headache coming already, though rubbing his temples was not helping.
He would rather be home, at the House of Wind, having time with his mate and young daughter since this was the second day in a row that he had to be at the Illyrian camps. Some of the captains were getting too comfortable, which led to Cassian needing to come up and whip them into shape. It was mostly babysitting now, yet babysitting Nyx and Alec was far more enjoyable than an army filled with Illryians who were headstrong and pompous.
But the front flaps of his Captain quarter opened abruptly, though Cassian's head was down d looking over the names of the recruits that had just arrived a week before.
"Cassian, you have a visitor," One of his Captain Gerard, voiced from the front. Cassian cracked his knuckles, squinting a bit from the headache that was right behind his eyes.
"If it's one of the recruits bitching about their sleeping quarters, they can it up with Reg," Cassian replied while keeping his eyes trained on the paper below him, then hearing an awkward shuffle of boots.
"I am not one to judge the living quarters of Illyrian soldiers, nor have I ever been,"
Cassian's eyes snapped up from the voice, knowing exactly who it was. High Lord Beron, the very High Lord of Autumn Court, was in his tent, at Windhaven Camp in Night Court. He was dressed in the Autumn Court colors, standing stiff and tall though looking rather unpleased. Cassian shot up from his spot at the desk, looking rather shocked at the sight of Baron in his tent. With none of his security or guards, all alone.
Alarms were ringing in Cassian's head, the very alarms that signaled him to be on his guard. Then again, his Captains and other commanders at Windhaven would have alerted him instantly if someone made it past the borders of the camp. Autumn Court was not well-liked with the Illyrian soldiers that were at Windhaven. Was Cassian walking into some kind of trap? Was he about to lose his life?
Should he tell Rhysand and the others?
"High Lord Beron," Cassian said his name, not wishing to sound far too surprised but it still almost came out as a squeak. He looked past the High Lord at Gerard, the Captain giving him a look of shock from behind Beron as Cassian cleared his throat, "Gerad, make sure we have no interruptions,"
"Of course," he replied, giving Beron a perplexed look from behind as Beron was simply looking around at the interior of the tent. He slipped out of the ten, closing it to finally leave Cassian and Beron alone. One eagan, Cassian had an uneasy feeling in the back of his mind, his sword was not too far away and propped against his chest behind him, and his daggers strapped to hip and thighs. He could be light on his feet, though he had never seen High Lord Beron in combat before.
Beron eyed him, his dark eyes scanning Cassian up and down with intrigue and almost a hint of judgment, "No need to worry about yourself and safety, my men are not too far away and on patrol around the camp as we speak,"
"Is that a good idea with a camp filled with adrenaline-filled Illryians?" Cassian asked carefully though Beron barely cracked a smile.
"My men know not to move without my permission," Beron answered, a moment or two passed before he looked at Cassian directly in the eyes. Cassian could see years and years of leadership in these eyes, along with centuries of pain and remorse. It was almost haunting, and the serious look he was getting was not helping the situation.
"I have Eris in my custody, back in Autumn Court,"
Cassian felt his heart drop to the ground and a shiver went down his spine. The very high fae who brought fear and worry to Azriel and his family, who almost killed Alec when he was a toddler, and two weeks ago Azriel's mate nearly died from Eris. The target that was on the Autumn Court Prince's back grew over time, mostly due to his poor choices and irrational decisions against not only Night Court but the only Shadowsinger in all of Prythian.
Cassian had soldiers combing through all of Night Court from top to bottom, Rhysand spoke to the other High Lords and implored them to hand him over if he was discovered, and for a few days there seemed to be the notion that he fell off the face of the continent. But now to hear he was back in Autumn Court, by his own father, Cassian didn't know what to think as Beron walked back and forth in front of his desk, looking a bit remorseful as he spoke again.
"As per the agreement I made with your High Lord, I will hold him in my custody until High Lord Rhsyand will do what he sees fit as punishment for the crimes he committed," Beron explained, his fingers twitching a bit at his sides as he was pacing slowly, Cassian's eyes following him like a hawk while he spoke some more, "I will not let him stay in my Court with his crimes, only to stain my Court's reputation and standing amongst the other Courts and in Prythian.".
Cassian could not believe what he was hearing: Beron was willing to hand his son over to Rhysand, willingly, and with no need of an exchange or trade in return. Surely there had to be some kind of trick or compromise that came with this, Beron must need something in return for handing his son over without a second thought.
Finally finding his voice, Cassian gave the High Lord an inquisitive stare, "You'd hand your son over so willingly?"
Perhaps he struck a chord or hit a nerve since Beron stood so still like a tree and stared deeply at Cassian, "Eris is no son of mine,"
He said it in such a way that was both vile and yet emotional as Cassian went silent again. Like it was set in stone, written in ink, and left the rest of time to digest.
"He has done wrong in the past, no doubt because of his young age and the need to be reckless. I have overlooked the headaches and heartaches he inflicted on others including myself and his mother. But the choice he had, to willingly take the life of two innocent souls with no account of the consequences that would take place, that I will no do," He explained to Cassian and he stood face to face with him, "Who am I to preach such things when I too am also guilty of the mistakes I made in the past, the decisions that made my reputation the way it was for centuries. Yet now I wish to change it, change the way the other Courts see my Court and my family."
He was saying the right things to Cassian, and yet he would still stay on his guard when it came to Autumn Court. Azriel and his family meant more to Cassian than the word of Beron. His Court was not high up on Cassian's trust list, nor with anyone else in the Inner Circle for that matter. Yet again, Cassian was in the room with Beron and Rhysand spoke about the agreement they made about Eris, he saw it all and heard it too. Beron would be a fool to go against Night Court and Rhysand if he was claiming that he wanted to make amends with all the Courts in Prythian.
"The Spymaster's family should have never been a target, that much is fact," Beron stated, his voice softer now at the mention of Azriel while Cassian watched him intensely, "You may not believe my word, to which I do not blame you. I can only give you my word, and I swear on my lineage of Autumn Court. Not only that but I dare not tamper with my daughter-in-law's family and loved ones. I happen to appreciate and love young Elaine, she has brought life back to Lucien,"
At the mention of Elaine, Cassian could see he was telling the truth. Elaine truly was well-loved by all of the citizens in Autumn Court, from the moment she was presented as Lucien's fiancee and became a popular public figure amongst the common folk and fae. Lucien would tell the Inner Circle how she was making a tremendous mark amongst the people and her in-laws, who adored her and took her under their wing. Elaine became a wonderful bridge for the two Courts, making the alliance as strong as ever.
"As I stated before, Eris is in my custody, and I await to hear from Rhsyand on what he wishes to do with him. I will hold no grudges or quarrels against your High Lord and Lady on whatever they choose to do, I only ask they don't have a charge of heart against my Court from Eris's actions," Beron explained, giving Cassian one more intense look. Perhaps to either seek approval or not, but Cassian nodded his head.
"I'll let my High Lord know," he replied, Beron shifted his head down slightly as a way of thanks before he made his way to the front of the tent. Before he went out, his hands wrapped around the flap, he looked back at Cassian with a softer look in his dark eyes.
"Please send my condolences and apologies for the Spymaster. I truly am sorry for all that has happened to his family," After he stated that, he slipped out of the tent without a second thought.
Cassian was left alone, in utter shock from what occurred in front of him and what he heard. The last thing he expected was to have Beron in front of him, High Lord Beron, handing his son over to Rhysand and Night Court.
Importantly, to Azriel.
He blinked once, then ran over to grab his sword and out of the tent. Beron was nowhere to be seen, nor was his soldier. A couple of Illyrian soldiers looked around in confusion as Gerard walked over with wide eyes.
"What in the hell?!" Gerard asked.
"Stay here and hold down the camp. No one goes in or out until I give the word," Cassian replied, stretching out his wings as he looked at Gerard, "No one, understand?"
With a nod from his Captain, he took to the sky with one swipe of his wings, soaring up so fast his breath was nearly lost.
He had to find the others and deliver the news. He had to find Azriel.
Your POV
"Cousin,"
Hearing Rhysand's voice behind you gave you a small shiver, you turned to look over your shoulder and see him standing at the doorway of your home, standing a bit stiff and not leaning against the doorway as he usually would when he visited. This was no visit, you staring into his eyes and almost reading his mind. He stared back, the violet shade in his eyes and the gaze he held with you was enough to understand what he was mentally saying to you.
"I'll protect him"
Azriel was with you at home and Rhysand and Cassian came rushing through the door, looking as if they saw a ghost when they saw yourself, Azriel, and Alec playing together in the living room. Azriel took them out to the back garden, not wishing for Alec to listen while you couldn't help but watch from the kitchen window. From the look on their faces and how Azriel's calm demeanor hardened instantly, you knew what they were talking about.
Eris.
You've had plenty of nights waking up from tremors and nightmares, replaying that moment when you were trying to flee from the Autumn Court soldiers and being shot down within seconds. The poison spreads through you, your body shutting down within seconds and feeling unbearable pain. You would wake up gasping for air, sometimes you would scream from how intense the nightmares were.
But every time it happened, Azriel held you close and kissed away the tears and hummed away the pain. You knew what he went through when you were recovering at River House, though he would try to hide it from you and not let you see it on his face. But sometimes you would see it, how his eyes lingered on your scarred wing a moment or two longer, or you would feel it in the bond with the worry and protection that was festering deep. It was more intense than it was before, and more brutal too. You would reassure him over and over that you were safe and alive, but you realized that he would never truly be satisfied.
Not until Eris was dead.
"I need you to stay here with your momma, okay?" You looked back at Azriel, who was kneeling in front of Alec in his leathers and Truth Teller strapped against his hip. Alec looked rather confused and a bit sad that his father was leaving abruptly, his bright eyes wide and his bottom lip threatening to quiver, "I have to go take care of something with you Uncles Rhysand and Cassian,"
"Can't I come help, Daddy? I'm big now, remember?" Alec asked hopefully, Azriel smiled and reached out to cup his son's face with his scarred palm. You pushed your tears away quickly, not wishing for Alec to see as your mate and son shared a moment in your small home. This home, meant to be a safe space and a space filled with love, was now festering with uncertainty and hate thanks to the Autumn Prince. Azriel swore to you, long ago, that your life together would not be tainted or taken away. He kept the promise, even after Alec came along. He was doing it now, eliminating a threat.
When Azriel explained to you that Eris was back in Autumn Court, being held by his father for Azriel and the others to deal with, you were beyond afraid for your mate. Azriel has come so far in his life to be where he was: happy with a family and no longer haunted by darkness and hate. It took blood, sweat, and tears for Azriel to overcome and conquer the ghosts in his past and not let them defy him.
Now you were afraid he would resort back to the lethal part of himself that you hated.
"You are big," Azriel agreed, staring into his son's eyes and seeing Alec look at him with some sadness there, "You are very big, Alec. Remember what we talked about, you being the man of the house while I'm away?"
Alec nodded his head, tears were about to brim.
"You need to be that man of the house now, Alec. I need to go with your Uncles, and you need to stay here with your momma where you both will be safe. I always tell you that I will do anything and everything to keep you and your momma safe, right?"
"R-Right," Alec blubbered, inhaling sharply as Azriel leaned forward and touched his head with his own. You felt your own heart slam hard seeing the gesture, something they would do together from time to time to show affection. Azriel never minded hugging his son or kissing him constantly, he would pour his love into his son whenever he could. Almost as a way to replace what he never had as a child, but when their foreheads touched, it was sacred. The bond grew every single time, and it was a beautiful sight to see.
"I'll be back before you know it, buddy," He whispered to Alec, who hugged him tightly and dug his head into his father's shoulder. Azriel's arms went around him quickly and kept him close, you feeling in the bond that he was feeling remorse in leaving his son and the insane love he had for him. Nothing else could compare in this lifetime, and you also would fight tooth and nail to keep your family together.
"You promise?" Alec mumbled in his father's neck. Azriel hummed, you seeing him try not to break in front of his son.
"I promise, Alec Rhysand," he replied, kissing the top of his head and then pulling away to look at his son one more time. He thumbed away the tears, Alec looking a bit calmer but still heartbroken in not understanding what was going on, "You take care of your momma, okay?"
"Yes, Daddy," He replied, Azriel then moved away from him to walk over to you. You both stared at one another, Azriel seeing how you too were trying to keep it together. You both already talked about this, right after he got word about Eris and his whereabouts. Seeing the rage in his eyes and how he sounded heated when you were pleading with him not to go, not in the mindset he was in. You felt the rage, the anger that was in his core which seemed to grow by the day. But you knew he was set in his ways when it came to Eris and what he attempted to do to his family. Eris's fate was already made, and Azriel would make sure he was no longer a threat.
By any means necessary.
You come back to me in one piece, You said in the bond, drilling your own blue eyes in his hazel ones. Azriel moved without a second thought, standing in front of you and kissing you softly. This kiss was something that seemed concrete, almost cemented within you. It was not rough or passionate, nor was it too soft and merely brief. No, this felt like the first kiss you two ever shared when you two were young and blissfully in love with one another. It was then that you realized that he was telling you through the kiss, that he loved you more than anything or anyone else in all the world around you.
