Can I send asks to your members? Yes! Please do so! Our inboxes are always open for questions, prompts and proddings. You can send your own or join in on any ask meme shared by our members. Don’t be shy!

Can I reblog your threads? Yes - usually. When our characters are interacting in first person, bantering or sharing thoughts, you are welcome to reblog these and interact with us! However, if it’s a third-person paragraph style RP post, please don’t reblog it, as this can disrupt the ongoing interaction!

I’m a roleplaying blog for another character, can I still interact? Yes, but remember that only our group’s members are considered “canonical”. Therefore, if you are roleplaying Pharah on your own blog, remember that whatever happens between your character and our members won’t affect their storyline or relationships within our group and is automatically considered AU or non-canon.

Can I claim a Speaks URL for my character before applying? No! This makes it more difficult for our members to claim their urls if you are not selected to play your character. :(

How are applications processed? Our group will review your application, and once enough votes are gathered, we will let you know whether you are accepted into our group or not.

How/when will I know if my application has been reviewed? Our admins will contact you about the results of your application process once the group has voted on it. If you are accepted into our group, you will be able to claim your url and start building your blog as well as join our Discord server. Your url should be something along the lines of “characterspeaks” or “character-speaks”, but alternatives are sometimes used when the desired url is already taken. Your blog can be a main- or a sideblog depending on which you prefer.

How will I know if I’m a good fit for the group? Our group is welcoming to all kinds of roleplayers. You don’t have to have prior experience with roleplay to join us, but we are still selective and your application will do much better when you show us how dedicated, knowledgeable and passionate you are about portraying your chosen character. Make a good first impression!

We don’t tolerate any kind of hostility in our group, as this is supposed to be a fun, safe place for our members to interact and we want everyone to feel accepted and welcome here. While we expect a firm grasp of and a degree of loyalty to the Overwatch canon and lore from our members, we are welcoming to the variety of portrayals and ships our members bring with them and expect that no one should be discriminated against based on their preferences in our spaces. This goes doubly for the real life identities, orientations and other personal characteristics of our members. This is a discrimination and hate free zone for all races, beliefs, gender expressions, and sexual orientations. Discussion of difficult and triggering subjects such as politics and real life religions should be avoided completely.

ROLEPLAY IN OUR GROUP

What kind of content can I post on my Speaks blog? Anything relevant to your character! Think and blog as if you are your muse; reblog the kind of content they’d reblog on their blog, write out their thoughts, and interact with our other members in first person as your character would. You may also participate in paragraph style 3rd person roleplay as you please.

Do I have to stick to Overwatch lore? While we will always welcome headcanons and different perspectives, your character should begin as if they just stepped out of the game’s original story. Your character’s relationships and experiences should be approximately as stated in your character’s story prior to your involvement. However, from this point on, anything can happen! Just remember to make it believable and build up your relationships and character arc appropriately so that through everything, your character will still be recognizable as themselves. If you’re playing Mercy and want her to join Talon, we want to see her reasons and transformation first - not just her application!

Exceptions to this rule are different events and happenings in our group such as Halloween, when your character can go through temporary transformations and other changes.

Should I keep my blog family friendly? Yes. Our blogs aim to be safe for minor readers. Before posting your content, please consider whether you’d show it to your hypothetical 13-years-old sister first.

Can I roleplay with blogs outside of Speaks? Yes. If a follower interacts with you through asks or reblogs, you may interact with them the same as you would with our group’s members. However, if you are interacting with an in-character blog outside of our group, please remember that only developments within our group should affect your character - so, if in a thread with an outside blog your character married another character, in reality your character remains single in their story. You should preferably use an AU tag for these threads to keep them separate from your other threads.

How often should I be active on my blog? We have relaxed rules on activity, but you should always aim to be as active on your blog as you can! Even one-liners and in-character thought posts count for your activity. If there is very little or no activity on your blog over the period of three weeks, you’ll have to confirm with us that you’re still interested in your role and will be more active in the future.

GROUP ETIQUETTE

Post format guideline Write your posts in a manner that feels natural to your character, but please try to use proper grammar and don’t over-format your posts. They should be easy to read and easy to comprehend for all readers! It is also recommended that you trim longer threads; if you are unsure how, ask for help!

Ask meme guideline Always try to send an ask to the member of our group you’re reblogging an ask meme from! This will help to ensure that no one is left without asks and interactions. We’ve all been there; everyone reblogs your meme but nobody sends you an ask. It’s not a good feeling.

Behavior in group Our group aims to be a safe, fun environment for all our members and followers. Respect your fellow roleplayers and keep our spaces free of negativity and conflict. If a problem arises, don’t hesitate to involve the admins or moderators, and if at all possible, keep any confrontation and callouts out of our shared spaces like Discord and especially your character’s Speaks blog.

SPEAKS AND NSFW

Can I post NSFW content on my blog or in our Discord server? No. We try to keep our content loosely within the PG-13 rating, and no explicit sexual content or nudity should be posted anywhere in our spaces. If your character is in a relationship and the RP turns steamy, make use of fade to black!

I received a NSFW ask. What should I do with it? Delete it or, if you are of age of majority and have explicitly consented to NSFW asks, answer it in private. No NSFW asks should ever be published on our blogs.

I want to send a NSFW ask. Can I? Assume the answer is no, unless you’ve specifically asked for permission OR the inbox of the member you’re sending the ask to states that they accept NSFW asks. Never send NSFW asks to minors. Remember to turn off your anonymous. No NSFW asks will be published on the blogs.

RULEBREAKING AND CONSEQUENCES

I’ve broken a rule. What happens now? Our group has a strike system. When you break a rule either on your blog or in our Discord server, you will receive a strike. On your third strike, you will be removed from the group and banned from reapplying. If your behavior improves and you don’t break the rules again, your strike will wear off in three months. If you’ve received two strikes, you’ll be back to no strikes in six months. Try not to receive your third one.

For serious incidents, instant ban from the group is possible.

A follower is making me uncomfortable. What can I do? Firstly, block them. You can block anons, which will also prevent blogs from that IP address from contacting you regardless of if you’ve specifically blocked their urls. If you’re being harassed, you should warn other members of the specific blog in question so that they know to be wary. 

Last resorts are turning off your anonymous asks or closing your inbox temporarily and sending a report to Tumblr staff about harassment.

The Metacritic Speedrunning Guide

Good evening, Gamers. Plenty of games have received excellent speedruns over the years. But have you tried speedrunning a website?

Metacritic is a brilliant untapped well in terms of content, since 2011. (But more likely to have been possible since the site’s launch in 2001.) The site contains numerous exploits for moving scores up and down to your heart’s content, with the bare minimum being done in terms of patching them.

But first, we need to understand how the site works.

How Metacritic creates scores.

To start off, not every game listed on the site is displayed on it’s main listing. and that is due to one simple issue.

Critic reviews.

For a game to join the prestigious goal of being on Metacritic’s database. It needs 4 or more Critic reviews.Users can still review a title that hasn’t reached this level, but said changes will never show on the main directory listing.

(Technically speaking, Cory in the House is one of the best user reviewed games on Metacritic, but as there’s only 2 critic reviews. It is unable to reach the top of the charts.)

Once a game acquires the prerequisite number of critic reviews, the site assigns a percentage score to it. Sending it to the directory.

Unsurprisingly, some obscure and/or niche games with a small set of high scores have hijacked the charts on a few occasions, such as with  OUT OF THE PARK BASEBALL 2007. Which floated high with it’s almost perfect score of 96 before MC hastily removed it from the site’s database.

The same issue also applies to user scores, though this is considerably rare without someone deliberately fiddling with the site. As demonstrated by Metal Torrent.

Note that this game only received the necessary 5 reviews needed to add it to the database before shooting to the top.

Actually planning out your speedrun

To start, you’ll need to pick a game. and what would you like to try with it.

Do you add a specific amount of reviews? Change the score to a specific number? Or even try your hand at raising a game to the top or bottom* of the charts yourself?

*Nᴏᴛ ʀᴇᴄᴏᴍᴍᴇɴᴅᴇᴅ, ᴡʜʏ ɴᴏᴛ sᴘʀᴇᴀᴅ ᴛʜᴇ ᴡᴏʀᴅ ��ʙᴏᴜᴛ ᴀ ɢᴀᴍᴇ ʏᴏᴜ ʟᴏᴠᴇ?

Be sure to consider how many reviews a game has already, as well. Something with around 100 or less reviews is manageable for making major changes to, for example. Here’s what happens when you double the amount of scores by adding 10s or 0s on a game with a small amount of reviews.

Impressive work, right? You could try a game with much more reviews. But it would be especially tedious to accomplish, maybe you could save it for a charity event?

As for why this is possible. This is because of 4 major flaws in MC’s security.

Very little effort in disabling disposable E-mail services, when one is disabled. Plenty more take their place.

A very limited form of IP checking, limiting the creation of new accounts to one per hour. But with no way of permanently banning IPs from making new accounts.

No checking scores to verify if they’re legitimate. Everything is just dumped on the site immediately.

The site doesn’t verify if the person scoring the game even owns it, much less has played it yet.

The first and second points are pretty much your only real stop-gap before starting a run, but it’s very easy to check beforehand.

When making an account, there’s 5 fields that need to be filled. The username (can be any random short string of characters.) The E-mail (which is filled twice.) Your password, and the usual CAPCTHA.

The password is particularly restrictive, requiring any 3 of the following.

Lowercase Characters

Uppercase Characters

Numbers

Symbols

However, the check for said password is done after verifying the E-mail isn’t blacklisted. Meaning that if you deliberately type in an unusable password. The site won’t tell you that until after you put in a usable E-mail.

It should also be possible to skip the whole process of finding a usable disposable E-mail service by using G-Mail’s “E-Mail Alias” functionality, but i haven’t fully tested it.

Once that’s done, you should receive an E-mail from Metacritic on the disposable address you provided. Clicking the link in said message is required to change scores on the site. So don’t forget it!

As for the second point, this is where things get a bit difficult.

After the last few incidents revolving their ridiculous security, they made one small change to their servers. Which is the aforementioned timer. Problem is, there’s still nothing stopping you from acquiring a few proxies. swapping between them as the hour time limit ticks down. Points 3 and 4 are completely unchanged. Which means situations like that are still happening.

i’m afraid i can’t really help you much when it comes to acquire said proxies. But it’s not too hard to accomplish.

After this, just add your scores to whatever game(s) you’re going to run, and repeat, generating a new E-mail for each account, until you reach your goal.

and that’s basically it, it really is that simple to speedrun. Only being limited by how willing you are to push yourself into doing the same repetitive task over and over. So good luck, and tell the world all about your favorite obscure games!

I have not even mentioned the privacy problems that come with using internet. Just to give you a taste of what I am talking about, consider the fact that your internet service provider or ISP is probably selling your internet usage data to make money off you while you are already paying them for the service. In short, if you are going online without a VPN, you’re exposing yourself to the following risks:

- Giving hackers a free pass to eavesdrop on your online communications when you use public WiFi.

- Making it easy for cyber-criminals, government surveillance agencies, and ISPs to see what you type on unencrypted websites, what web page you search for, and what files you download (just to name a few examples).

- Letting your ISP sell your browsing data to advertisers.

Many oppressive regimes force national ISPs to block various websites nation-wide. Take China for example. Due to its strict internet policies, its residents and visitors cannot access popular websites like Facebook (although, I am not crying for that), YouTube, Twitter, Netflix, and more. Oh, and then there are firewalls. You know - the kinds of restrictions you’ll deal with at work or school if the network admin has to block websites like Facebook or Instagram to comply with the workplace or school policies.

How does a VPN help you with all that, you ask? Simple – it masks your real IP address, which contains data that leaks your geo-location (info that geo-blocks need to be efficient), and which firewalls also use to enforce restrictions. You can even select which country you want your connection to seem to originate from. For example, you can select USA as your VPN connection country and then your connection will seem to originate from the US allowing you to access all the geo-restricted content.

3. With a VPN, You Can Bypass Bandwidth Throttling

Did you ever notice a sudden decrease in online speeds whenever you were downloading something, watching an online video, or Skyping with your friends? That’s basically bandwidth throttling in action. It’s when your ISP reduces some of your Internet speed because you’re using up “too much data.” ISPs are pretty clever and they hide the bandwidth throttling in fine prints so most users are not even aware of it. You might have a fast 50 Mbps internet connection. However, it won't be the same everywhere as ISPs generally throttle speed if you are torrenting or streaming 4K content.

ISPs might claim they’re doing that to prevent network congestion, which is understandable. However, usually, ISPs use bandwidth throttling to pressure users into buying pricier subscriptions and data plans. Welcome to the very first issue of the MTG Weekly Tumblr Recap of the new year! For those unfamiliar with what we do, the MTG Weekly Tumblr Recap is a gathering of some of the most notable posts and trends from within the MTG Tumblr community for a given week. For this issue, we will be covering the week of January 8, 2017 through January 14, 2017. 1. Banned & Restricted Update Discussion

Wizards of the Coast announced bannings this past week, and I can’t say I’m surprised. Emrakul, the Promised End, Smuggler’s Copter, and Reflector Mage were banned in Standard, while Modern bans were simply Gitaxian Probe and Golgari Grave-Troll. There have been mixed feelings about these bans: many people were annoyed and upset that their favourite cards were banned, while others were quite relieved.

Emrakul, the Promised End, the final titan to be released, and the first to be banned. According to WotC, Emrakul was “created to be scarily powerful,” and “delivered on that promise too well.” @ugin guessed that “if an Emrakul hit the field, I would guess that approximately 90% of the time that person would win.” Scarily powerful indeed, and this was made even more scary with cards like Aetherworks Marvel. As a counterpoint, @life-is-short-for-us said that it isn’t unbeatable, but didn’t suggest how to actually beat it. Instead, he simply said that for Standard, it isn’t about “banning cards that are too good, but banning cards that are so good they are damn near impossible to beat and your only hope is playing the mirror match and they are like 70% of the field.”

This brings us to our second card banned, Smuggler’s Copter. While I don’t play much Standard, this one annoyed the hell out of me, and now that it’s banned, I’m kinda relieved. For this one, Wizards says that it was in too many of the top decks and was restricting creativity. I agree, as does @queen-marchesa: “The one that is least surprising is the Copter. It really was too omnipresent in Standard to allow for exploration or creativity.” I have always thought that the Looter Scooter was too powerful for a turn-two artifact, which helped turn the format stale.

Our final Standard banning was Reflector Mage. There’s not much to say about this one, really, and I think it was one of the odder bannings. Wizards says that, “Our data showed the White-Blue Flash deck was too powerful against the field,and Reflector Mage has been on players' lists of most-disliked cards, since the days of Collected Company.” I suppose when you take down decks with Emrakul and Copter, W/U Flash would be the one to dominate. Tumblr users agreed, with one stating, “The card ended up being very effective in this format.” Others thought it was a surprising ban, but seeing that it’s stuck around for so long, “makes sense.”

As for the Modern bans, let’s start with Gitaxian Probe. This one is one of the least surprising to me, as it takes some skill out of the game. According to @jurou-tenshi, “Git probe has had it coming for a long time. It enabled too many degenerate strategies.” @avatar-of-woah states, “Probe’s actually a real issue in infect because it takes play skill out of the equation. Instead of trying to read your opponent and what they could have that would beat you, you just pay two life,” and proceed from there. According to @urzas-raven-armour, “With the probe ban, storm is even less playable now.” I would assume that this ban also hits Delver decks, but I don’t know enough about them.

The final ban released this week was Golgari Grave-Troll, and from what I have found, people are glad to see it go. One user said that “Dredge is a silly silly deck that has proven to be too powerful for Modern,” and with the Delve mechanic brought back in Khans of Tarkir, I agree. Golgari Grave-Troll is a creature with Dredge 6, and it enters the battlefield with counters equal to the number of creatures in the graveyard. You can also pay one generic mana and remove a counter to regenerate it. Now, that seems extremely powerful to me, especially in the late game, where you’ll most likely have a lot of creatures in your graveyard, but it is definitely the Dredge 6 that puts it over the top, enabling way too many graveyard shenanigans.

2. This Past Week’s Magic Story Review

In this past week’s new Kaladesh Story “The Skies Over Ghirapur,” by Ari Levitch, we were introduced to the feisty teenage pirate captain, Kari Zev. In this story Kari Zev and Jace Beleren team up to assist the renegades, first by going on a heist to obtain aether, then to help the renegades take on the Skysovereign after they lost control of the Aether Hub in the story “Burn.”

The Tumblr community met this story with overwhelmingly positive reviews. The community adored the tenacity of Kari Zev and her sidekick, the monkey Ragavan. Tumblr user @zomburai claimed that the story was a delight. Others, like @abzanascendancy, were most excited about sky pirates. They also applauded Kari Zev for being 15, yet also being able to “pilot, command and crew her own ship.” Community members were even more excited about pirates then they were already, and some probably hope that a pirate-themed block will come along in the not-too-distant future.

With only three stories left in the Aether Revolt storyline, the MTGcommunity is anxiously waiting to see what happens next, with the Gatewatch’s final confrontation with Tezzeret and the Consulate, and what else that is in store for the plane of Kaladesh.

3. General Magic Story Discussion and Speculation

This week has been rife with Magic Story metadiscourse, from speculation for the future, to reflection on the past. Fans discussed Nissa’s shift toward tolerance in Magic Origins, and whether or not this made her a “Mary Sue”, prompting @commandtower-solring-go’s analysis of the term and its relationship to Magic [x]. On the other side, @chelsea-beleren-vess compiled potential points of civil war foreshadowing [x]

That’s why we say coronavirus has brought back the all-powerful Centre we had seen shrinking about 1989 onwards. Alcohol is just a symbol, if a particularly interesting one, of this big shift back in time. We now have the prime minister conversing directly with sarpanches, never mind the chief ministers. The Centre’s empowered teams are going to different states, not to survey damage caused by a flood, cyclone or drought to determine the size of central relief. They are going to monitor and audit how the state governments are managing the Covid crisis, and whether or not they are following the Centre’s orders fully. They are asking questions, demanding information by lawful right, and admonishing state governments. And state governments are complying. Maharashtra, to begin with. It’s been probably the friendliest of all. Rajasthan has been smooth too. The only one that had been defiant, Mamata Banerjee’s West Bengal, is also falling in line. The central team is requisitioning its medical records, auditing all fatalities, to check if the state is fudging figures. Even if kicking and screaming, the state government has been dragged to not only answer some of these questions, but also carry out a somewhat drastic revision of its fatality numbers. With all local businesses shut, property transactions over, petrol/diesel sales down to almost zero because of the lockdown, and the liquor ban, states have no revenues. Now many will soon struggle to pay staff salaries. Even then, relief for the poor now comes directly from the Centre. For three decades after 1947, as the Congress party, especially under Indira Gandhi, held sway, we were federal only naam ke vaaste. Most states were under the Congress and no chief minister dared to even move a DM or an SP without the Centre’s nod. Congress chief ministers could be dismissed with the wagging of a contemptuous party chief’s finger at an airport, (Karnataka’s Veerendra Patil in 1990 by Rajiv Gandhi). If it was an opposition government, it would be dismissed using Article 356. After the Emergency, it changed a bit. Although Mrs Gandhi returned in 1980, the impulse for autonomy in Punjab, Tamil Nadu and some other states forced her to concede some ground, at least for argument’s sake. In 1983, she set up the Justice Sarkaria Commission to review Centre-state relations. A voluminous report was produced, which I reported on, along with an interview with Sarkaria for India Today. Indira, and then Rajiv, had the power, however, to toss it. India’s politics changed with the Congress party’s loss of national domination in 1989. Over these decades, India has moved towards real federalism as ordained in the Constitution. And there is evidence to show it has worked.
