Barriss-centric story where the 41st and the 501st get paired together for the duration of the war. Barriss gets close with Ahsoka on her (ahsoka's) breaks back at the Temple early in the war, and then eventually goes out and joins the 41st as the war gets worse. She kinda figures that if she can't keep saving people the right way back at the temple, maybe she can at least keep Ahsoka safe. There's pining, there's a teenage love story, there's some 'teetering on the brink of total self destruction as the war slowly degrades her sense of self,' there's a whole lot of 'trying to tell your mom that you are this close to killing yourself and she's just not getting it'.

Meanwhile Luminara is scrambling to deal with this entire situation and the growing sense of dread it inspires. She and Anakin are pretty successful together but holy shit. There is so much wrong with this kid what the actual fuck. Anakin tries to talk to her about Barriss except he offhandedly mentions the chancellor thing in the process and no no no go back what do you mean the chancellor involved you in private senate matters as a teenager.

So I'm not the world's biggest Doctor Who fan or anything, I haven't done more than Tumblr watch it in years, but I happened across a quote from the Christopher Eccleston season that struck me as an interesting quote to use to discuss Anakin, his choice to save Luke, and why it doesn't really work for me.

I don't remember the context of the quote really, so I'm not going to discuss that.

But that bit about how one small act of kindness doesn't really... mean anything? THAT'S what's getting me here.

This is why Darth Vader isn't redeemed. Because yeah, sure, he did one kind thing. But Luke is probably not the first random person he decided to spare because, on a whim, he decided to just let someone run or escape.

The one act of kindness isn't truly about the person on the receiving end of it anyway, it's about HIM, about living with HIMSELF. Because he wants to believe he's a hero even though he's doing evil selfish things and he KNOWS he's doing evil selfish things but he can't face that so he just keeps telling himself he's a hero, and it's probably easier to tell himself that if, every so often, when the wind's going the right direction, he decides to be kind.

But it's still selfish.

Saving Luke is still selfish. Because he wants to be a hero TO LUKE, he doesn't want to live WITHOUT Luke, so he saves him. He saves him so he can say "tell your sister you were right." He lets himself die so he doesn't have to live with the consequences of anything he's done. That's how he slaughters millions and dies thinking of himself as the hero still, after everything.

Spoilers for The Bad Batch Season 2 Episode 12 under the cut

This episode was so heartbreaking in so many ways

Crosshair - a man who was used to kinda just do whatever he wanted with his brothers - got told off for not wearing his helmet. And then was told he was "used equipment"

Crosshair, taking a small break to remember his own name when Mayday asks him, because by now he's so used to only being a number and nothing more

Crosshair crawling through snow and digging out Mayday (who lets be honest, was probably the first person to treat him like a living being in forever) and carrying him with him to what should be safety. Even after Mayday told him to leave him, because he was nothing but "dead weight"

Them cuddling together in the shelter of a rock, waiting for the storm to calm down so they can move. Crosshair using his rifle to hold them both in place and then letting Mayday use it as cane to help him walking

And when they finally reached the base, when they finally was at what should've been safety

They were told off for failing the mission on retrieving that shitty equipment

The stormtroopers there looked like they wanted to disobey orders, because they could obviously tell these men needed help, but couldn't risk it

And Crosshair

Crosshair who is usually so headstrong, who pushed away a man who tried to help him after getting burnt by the ion engine - that very same Crosshair

Was on his knees, tired and definitely suffering from frostbite, gasping for air and begging for his brother to be saved.

He was BEGGING

Something that is so out of character for this man, but at this point he is so broken, so tired, so desperate he was willing to throw everything that defined him away just for this one person who treated him with dignity

Just be told that that man wasn't a person at all, but a tool to be used, just as Crosshair is and when it breaks, why repair it when you can get something new instead

The amount of physical, emotional and mental abuse Crosshair has had to face. Holy fuck it broke my heart. I don't like the man, but he deserves better

He deserves a hug and a warm meal and to be told that he matters

S3 Keeps Gesturing At the Theme of a Show Being Dragged Out Long Past When It Should've Finished and I Think Bot Should Be a Thesis Character for This, and I Think the Weird Walkie Talkie Voice Should've Been Responsible for Her Existence. We Don't Know Anything About Walkie Talkie Because She Doesn't Do Anything, if She Did Make Bot That Would Make Sense With Her Whole Goal of Keeping ii Running and it Would Add Some Tension ans Complexity to the Series. How Did She Do This and Why? Are There Other People Involved? Isnt This Horribly Invasive? You Could Still Have Test Tube and Fan Adopt Bot or Whatever Idc But If She Was Made By a Shadowy Faceless Entity Using the Likeness of a Popular Dead Celebrity to Boost Ratings of a New TV Show That Would Say Something Right? remember rewatching the part in strikers a couple years ago in which nanoha goes to save vivio, her adopted daughter, who is a girl of FIVE forced to become a magical super weapon no longer in control of her body and nanoha has to beam her so incredibly powerfully that nanoha becomes permanently disabled to a small degree and nanoha KNEW of that risk (could easily have been worse) and i was literally CRYING even with completely forgotten context because SOMEHOW this is just this series’ specialty where the most emotional moment is when Nanoha pulls it ALL OUT to stop somebody and in doing so saving them andhere it is extra powerful because vivio is calling out for nanoha to save her and nanoha can only do that by hurting her

The ship was quiet, which was rare for a vessel that normally had 7 people on it.

The rest of the batch were on a small mission, and had left you and Crosshair behind. (Don't ask, he'd been injured on the last mission and he did NOT want to talk about it.) You'd had kind of a rough day, they happen sometimes to everyone, and it hadnt escaped the perceptive sniper's notice. You'd been sitting in the common area, quietly reading a book, when he silently stalked in and sat down beside you.

He didnt speak right away, he rarely did. But you'd been around the batch long enough that you understood his intentions anyway, and you knew he trusted you and cared about you in his own somewhat grumpy way.

"I don't know what's wrong. And i know I'm not anyone's first choice to talk to. But I will listen, if you want."

His familiar voice was softer than usual, uncommonly so, and it caught you off gaurd for a minute. You nodded, unsure if you were going to speak, but you knew he understood that too. He gently bumped his shoulder against yours and with a small sigh, slid a strong, lean muscled arm around your shoulders.

You knew Cross didn't share affection lightly and you leaned against his side, content to share in his warmth as long as he would let you. And he was a sniper. He could sit in silence for a long time.

The ship was quiet. Unusual for such a vessel. But it was cozy. And you knew that within was at least six other souls who cared about you. And sometimes, that could be enough.

Okay, I am crying in the best way. So today has not been great at all. A past abuser reached out to me, and it took everything not to respond, but I kind of fell into an emotional hole. Thank you for this story, and actually, Crosshair is my first choice. This is so very lovely. Thank you!
