part 1 | part 2 | part 3 [final]
His dreams consisted of aching memories. He wished sometimes he could think of happy times, the light among the dark. He wished he could dream of those times instead of a seemingly never ending spiral of darkness whenever he closes his eyes.
The only time he would ever see light in the midst of his pain, it was you. You would be in his dream, bringing him further away from the memories that pained him. And when he woke, you were usually there. You would be next to him, curling against his body, or in the room beside his, shifting in your bed.
You were his source of happiness.
You were only his friend. The girl who found him nearly dying in the trees. The girl who took him into her home, helped him heal, and made sure he was always okay. Because that’s what friends do.
He couldn’t tell you the truth even if he tried his hardest. He wouldn’t corrupt you with his painful past, and he wouldn’t let you see him as weak. White lies overpower the actual truth.
But, as he fell asleep that night, the only thing he heard was Jeongguk’s voice like a record player in his thoughts. Tell her the truth before something bad happens.
Flowers had started to bloom, creating both a fresh scent to the air along with the wisps of dandelion. It was the time of year where children liked to play most, trying to catch insects and play.
You had taken Taehyung to a park, where the two of you sat on the grass and picked at the flowers around you. Sure, there was a big city behind you. But the only thing you heard were each other.
You were shining, blowing wisps of dandelion off and making unknown wishes. He found himself staring. You were so brilliantly stunning, the sunlight beaming onto you in the perfect lighting as you enjoyed the afternoon air. He was nearly breathless.
A butterfly landed on your arm. When you smiled, trying to coax it onto your hand, he couldn’t help but smile himself.
But, the butterfly flew away.
Taehyung was almost completely healed. He hadn’t felt any pain on his back or shoulders, he wasn’t very weak anymore, and he was “slowly regaining his memory”, as he told you.
You were happy that he was remembering things, small details of his life that were the things that made him who he was. At least, that’s what you told yourself. In the back of your mind, you hoped there wasn’t some girl he was in love with, or some boy, which would only make this situation worse.
Little did you know.
Park Jimin was becoming a reoccurring problem in Taehyung’s life. He would always undermine him, stare at him for too long trying to figure him out. Taehyung felt like a criminal under his gaze.
Every time the three of you would be together, Jimin would ask an abundance of questions about him. Some of which he had to lie about, such as the simple “what was your job before you nearly died?”. He couldn’t just say “I was the guardian angel of your best friend, the one who saved me and the one I’m currently in love with.” That would be absurd.
So, the next time Park Jimin arrived at the house, Taehyung had pretended to sleep.
“He’s asleep.” you had told Jimin.
“Since he’s asleep, I should tell you some things.” Jimin said. “I don’t trust him.”
“We’ve already been through his.” you sounded exhausted. “Tae is a friend, Jiminie. He isn’t going to hurt me, and he certainly isn’t going to steal anything of mine.”
“You really don’t find him weird, at all?” he asked, and Taehyung cringed a bit. “You don’t find it a bit odd that there are no records of him? No dental, no doctors visits? Or how he can remember where he’s from but not who his family is? You don’t find any of that out of the ordinary? He’s a liar, and he...”
“He almost died, and I just want...”
“You want to see the best in everyone, and that’s your problem.” Jimin must have started walking to the door, his voice moving. “The next time you find someone nearly dead, don’t fall in love with them. It ruins your judgement.”
Taehyung stayed silent, but he felt a tear fall.
He wanted to kiss you. He could do it, take a chance and go to your room and press his lips against yours.
So, he got up and went to your bedroom. He knocked lightly on your door. You mumbled something on the other side.
Taehyung entered your bedroom. He felt awkward, standing in the middle of your room after shutting the door. You turned to look at him.
“Tae, come here.”
He did as told, heading to the bed and laying down next to you. Your arms instantly wrapped around his head, bringing him into your chest. He didn’t know if it was your natural instinct or if you wanted to cuddle.
His arms found his way around your waist as he pressed his head into your neck. You hummed.
“What’s wrong?” you asked, your hands now finding his hair.
Taehyung didn’t say anything. Instead, he placed a kiss to your neck. It was small, soft, and you barely felt it. But you still felt it.
He had to tell you. Jeongguk’s voice repeated in his mind like a mantra. Tell her before something bad happens. Nothing bad should happen. He wouldn’t let anything bad happen.
He’s went over the script in his mind. He would tell you when you got home from work that night. He would sit down and tell you about his past life, about how he was no longer an angel.
But, when you arrived, he couldn’t speak. He just welcomed you home, smiling his boxy smile that you had come to love.
You smiled back at him. But your smile quickly faded. He looked tired, sick even. His skin was a paler shade, and his hair stuck to his forehead as though he had been sweating.
“Tae, are you alright?” you stepped forward and pressed a hand to his forehead to check his temperature.
“Yeah, I’m fine. I’m glad you’re home.”
Perhaps he would tell you another day.
“You’re an idiot.” you said, nudging into Jimin’s side.
“Yeah, but I’m your favorite idiot.” he joked. “Besides, what could you possibly do without me, huh?”
“Fail most of my classes, that’s for sure.” you smiled.
The two of you sat in a coffee shop that a lot of the university students frequented. It was a typical study place; the warm atmosphere and abundance of coffee bringing many last minute students for a place to study.
A waitress, who also happened to be a girl in your math lecture, came to your table asking what you both wanted. After your quick order, she made a small comment, “you two are cute together.”
Jimin only laughed and said, “Thanks.”
You rolled your eyes. “We aren’t together, but we do have a very good friendship. We get mistaken for a couple a lot.”
“Ah, but we might have been together if you weren’t in love with a liar.” Jimin muttered, staring at the textbook in front of him.
The waitress bit the inside of her mouth. “I guess I’ll just go get those drinks, yeah?”
You looked stunning, to say the least. The golden sun gleamed off of you, your hair glimmering in the nearly perfect way. He couldn’t take his eyes off of you. You weren’t even dressed up.
You had just woken up, no makeup and pajamas still wrinkled against your body. He wanted to tell you how beautiful you were, how incredibly in love with you he was.
Tell her before something bad happens.
“Darling, I have to tell you something.” he said from the couch.
You blinked at him, and sat down. Usually, he would make an effort to sit close to you, or put an arm around you to keep you close to his body. But this was different.
“What’s going on?” you asked. You expected the worst, anxiety skyrocketing.
“I have to tell you something, and you have to promise me that you won’t freak out.” he spoke carefully, each word processed through his mind a million times.
“Okay.”
“When I say this, it changes nothing, okay? I’m still just Kim Taehyung. Please believe me when I tell you this...”
You nodded. You had never seen him so scared before. He was always so calm, collected, putting on a fake smile to prove to you that he was okay. It terrified you.
“I am, well I was, an...”
The doorbell rang, cutting him off. He held his breath, swallowing. He can do this, it’ll be fine.
You apologized, “I’ll be right back. I’m sorry, it’s probably just Jimin.”
He watched you walk to the door, but closed his eyes. He tried to control his breathing.
You were at the door, opening it only a crack. It was a man, tall with dark hair. He didn’t look intimidating, you just didn’t want to open the door for someone you didn’t know.
“Can I help you?” you asked.
“Pick up for Kim Taehyung?” the man said.
You opened the door a bit more. “Can I ask what for? I can get him if you need.”
“Oh, that won’t be necessary.” the man said.
Before you could speak, you felt the air leave your lungs as the world became dark.
