ugh my heart absolutely nerds out when FoF uses wardrobe and hair to reflect character change and growth. In the flashbacks, pre-darkening Li Lun wears short hair and is commonly depicted wearing white robes to represent youth and innocence.
After he turns his back on Zhu Yan, he grows out his hair to a great 1.7/1.8m length - now this is interesting because in all the period cdramas we watch and irl history, nearly everyone grows out their hair because of filial piety (if you cut your hair, you are disrespecting your parents who gave you this physical body.) But Li Lun only grows out his hair after his fall out with Zhu Yan. I may be reading too much into it, but imo this reflects how much he doesn't understand human traditions. His long hair seems to instead, represent all the grudges and hate he held and grew while being imprisoned. He also never wears light coloured robes during this period.
Now after returning, his hair is short again in that half up and half down hairdo. Apart from being a callback to his old self and having little bit of that innocence returning to his life, it literally reflects how he has let go of his grudges, by letting go of his length of hair. Li Lun has been often likened to a child in FoF and now, he has ear accessories that dangle from behind his ears, and who else do we know has an accessory dangling from behind his ear? Bai Jiu. Yet, who can ever truly regain lost innocence? His robes are still dark coloured here, and with his short hairdo, it's as if he's saying, I can never go back to what I was, but this is me trying.
