A bead of sweat falls down the side of your head and your hand instinctively moves to brush it away.
“God it's fucking hot,” you say with a groan, attempting to fan yourself.
JJ laughs from his seat next to you on the couch. “It's the end of July and you live in North Carolina,” he says in a mocking tone. “What'd you expect.”
You roll your eyes, lazily shoving his shoulder. The two of you are sitting in the Chateau, waiting for John B to return from picking up the rest of the pogues. This is one of the few times in your life where you wished that you were a kook. At least they have backup generators and air conditioning.
“Hey, guys,” you hear Kiara say as she walks through the screen door that leads out to the porch, John B, Pope, and Sarah all trailing in behind her.
You lift your chin in acknowledgment as you continue to fan yourself. Everyone takes their seats around you and JJ. John B passes some beers around for everyone, the cold liquid cooling you down only slightly.
“What's the plan for today?” Pope asks.
“Boat day?” JJ suggests, but you shake your head. “We've gone on the boat every day this week,” you complain, adding a groan for dramatics. JJ   rolls his eyes at your antics.
Everyone goes quiet trying to think of an activity for the six of you.
“Oh,” Sarah says excitedly, slightly jumping up. “Let's play dodgeball!”
“Dodgeball?” all five of you ask in unison.
Sarah nods her head vigorously. “Yeah,” she explains in a much too enthusiastic tone, “We were cleaning out our garage a few days ago and I found Weezie’s old dodgeball set. She's used it like twice.”
The rest of us glance at each other and shrug. “I'm down,” John B says.
“Me too,” Kie adds. Pope adds a, “Me three.”
You look at JJ and have a silent dialogue through your eyes.
You and JJ have always been the closest. Whenever something happened to you, JJ was always the first person you wanted to tell, good or bad. In recent years, however, your feelings for the blonde boy have developed. Every time he walked into a room butterflies would erupt in your stomach and you get a tingly feeling every time he wraps an arm around you or holds your hand. It's not that you wanted to like your best friend like that, it just happened.
JJ nods his head at you, breaking you out of your thoughts.
“We're in,” you say, gesturing to you and JJ.
John B rolls his eyes. “Good the wonder twins are in,”
he says sarcastically, causing both you and JJ to blush. “Let's go before the sun sets.”
The six of you pile into the van, John B driving and Sarah getting shotgun per usual.
You decide to lay down, knowing it will take a few minutes to get to figure eight. Resting your head in Kiara’s lap, you put your feet across JJ’s. “Really, (Y/N),” he says in an annoyed voice, but he makes no move to push your feet away.
Kie plays with your hair while you guys talk about how the school year is coming up soon and before you know it, John B announces that you are at Sarah's.
The six of you walk up to Tanny Hill and JJ pulls your hand into his. The pogues pay no mind to this, seeing as you two hold hands all the time, but Kie smirks at you, being the only one that knows about your secret crush on your best friend.
You relish in the air-conditioned house. John B goes to help Sarah set up outside and the rest of you walk into the kitchen.
JJ lets go of your hand to rummage through the Cameron’s fridge. “Ooo, strawberries,” he says, pulling out a bowl of cut-up berries. You can't help but giggle at his childish behavior. JJ looks at you with a smile, his heart beating just a little bit faster at the sound of your laughter.
“JJ, stop,” Sarah exclaims as she runs into the kitchen. “Rose is using those to make a cake later.” She pulls the berries away from him and puts them away. “The game is ready,” Sarah adds, beckoning the four of you outside.
JJ pouts at her actions and you reach up to ruffle his hair. He leans into your touch, basking in even the slightest bit of affection from you.
The six of you make your way outside to a grass area that Sarah has. John B is standing in front of you guys with a whistle in his mouth, holding 4 dodge balls in his arms. You can't help but burst out in laughter at the sight. The whole thing reminds you a lot of the movie Dodgeball with Ben Stiller.
Once your laughter dies down, Pope speaks up. “How should we split into teams.”
“Boys versus girls?” you suggest with a shrug.
Kie claps her hands together. “Yes,” she says excitedly, “and to make it more exciting let's say losers buy dinner?”
“Oh it's on girls,” John B says as he high fives JJ and Pope.
JJ smirks. “Okay so how about the girls be skins,” he jokes causing you to slap the back of his head playfully. “Perv,” you say as you walk to one side of the grass.
Each side gets ready.
On the girls' side, you call Kie and Sarah in for a huddle. “Okay,” you say, putting your arms around their necks. “I say we go for Pope first because he's the weakest link, no offense Kie,” you say and Kie lets out a chuckle, “John B has a good arm, but he'll get cocky and leave himself open. I think the one we have to watch out for is JJ because he'll be strategizing.”
“Hey, are you three done preparing to get your asses whooped?” John B jokes.
The three of you roll your eyes but get into position anyways.
“I'll count to three, blow the whistle, and then we'll run to get the balls,” John B explains. “Okay. One. Two-” he blows the whistle and the boys run to the middle.
“Hey,” Sarah yells at her boyfriend, “You cheated.”
The game starts and Sarah gets hit by John B a few seconds in. “I was aiming for (Y/N) I promise, baby,” John says, apologetically.
The next one out is Pope. You hit him a few minutes later. A direct shot to the groin. You apologize, but you only half mean it.
A few minutes later Kie gets John B out at the same time that JJ gets Kie out. That leaves just you and JJ left in the game.
You each have a ball in your hands, staring each other down.
“Look I know that we have been friends for a very long time,” JJ says seriously, not breaking eye contact. “But if you think I'm going to take the loss in this game, you are seriously mistaken.”
You hold back your giggle at his seriousness. Suddenly you get an idea. “JJ I have to do something real quick so promise you won't hit me,” you plead, using your puppy dog eyes that you know he can't resist.
JJ groans, but nods his head. You put the ball down at your feet and your hands pull the t-shirt you have on over your head and you toss it to the side. You are thankful that you wore your new bikini under your shirt today.
“Thank god,” you say, adjusting the straps, “I was about ready to die of heatstroke.”
JJ’s mouth is gaping open like a fish. He's seen you in bikinis plenty of times, but none that accentuate your body like this one.
“Okay, resume,” you say after you pick up the ball signaling John B to blow the whistle, but JJ is too preoccupied staring at your chest.
You smile, using the time to throw your last ball. It hits JJ square in the chest, and he grunts at the impact. Kie and Sarah cheer loudly, running to pick you up and spin you around.
When they put you down you see John B and Pope making fun of JJ for getting so distracted. You laugh, slipping your shirt back on and walking over to JJ.
“I never thought my boobs would be your demise, Maybank,” you say as you make your way to stand next to the blonde boy.
JJ looks at you for a second, not responding. Then, before you can comprehend what is happening, JJ has you in his arms and he is pressing his lips firmly to yours.
You are in shock for a second, not able to understand what is happening. You feel as JJ starts to pull away and you react. You wrap your arms around his neck and run your fingers through his hair, pulling him back into the kiss. You hear your friends hollering around you, but in that moment all that matters to you is the blonde-haired boy in your arms.
Reluctantly, you pull away, slightly panting. “Well that was unexpected,” you say, breathing heavily.
JJ pushes your foreheads together. “Good unexpected, or bad?” he asks, and you can hear the vulnerability in his voice.
Instead of responding, you press your lips back to his for another kiss. You feel JJ smile into your lips before he pulls away. “God you have no idea how long I've wanted to do that, J,” you tell him.
“Me too, sunshine,” he says with a smile, the nickname causing your heart to melt.
“Finally,” Kie says. You jump away from JJ, having forgotten that your friends were all standing around you.
JJ laughs pulling you back into his side and pressing a sweet kiss to your temple.
“Yeah what she said,” John B mumbles, gesturing to Kiara.
“Wait you knew?” you ask, confused.
Pope rolls his eyes. “You two have been in love with each other since freshman year. The only people that didn't know were you two.”
You feel the blush sneak up your cheeks as Sarah nods in agreement. “Even I knew, guys,” she says with a laugh.
You burry your face into JJ’s shoulder in embarrassment and he chuckles into your hair before tipping your head up to bring your lips in for another kiss.

THE MOVIES MADE ME DO IT By Lorry Kikta
Those Richard Linklater Before movies ruined me forever. All this unlikely romance tied up in a handsome Ethan Hawke bow. It led me to believe that all things are never finished. I hold onto so many people, holographic distorted totems of a past that was painful, yet somehow transformed to endearing and wonderful with the glow of nostalgia...
In real life, has anyone ever really objected at the “speak now or forever hold your peace” part of the wedding ceremony? I haven’t even been to a wedding where that sentence was said, maybe to save everyone from an expensive stupid disaster. I have to admit that I have often times wished something like that would happen at a wedding I attended because weddings can sometimes be really damn boring and too long. If you know me and you’re reading this, of course I’m not talking about YOUR wedding.
Ultimately I wish that my stubborn memories would only highlight the negative aspects of certain people so I wouldn’t constantly wonder what this one person I kind of dated in 2004 is doing and whether or not he still “can't stop thinking of me” like he said on the phone six years ago. Or if the guy who got married is now divorced and if he is, what happened? Why do I care? I can only point to one source, a brain that was molded from a very early age by movies and television. I’m not attempting to be the Tipper Gore of the motion picture industry and blame movies for anything. I enjoy believing in fairy tales, until I get reminded continuously that they’re not reality.
Honestly, who cares? I love my boyfriend and we are in a solid relationship, but I have never been in a solid relationship prior to this one. I’ve always fallen in love with musicians that suffer from “emotional problems”. I’ve waited years for overgrown teenagers to come to the conclusion we were meant to be together forever.
It took me a very long time to realize that three types of movies exist for one sole purpose. There could absolutely be more but mostly these three. The teen movie or TV show where everyone is extremely mature and witty and everyone gets together with the unlikely objects of their affections (Pretty in Pink, Gossip Girl, etc. forever). Then there’s the romantic comedy where “the one who got away” returns and it’s all happy ever after (There’s Something About Mary, Reality Bites <Damn it Ethan Hawke>, etc.), or the one where the protagonist falls in love with someone who’s with someone else, and it never fails that this “someone else” is HORRIBLE (Titanic, Wedding Crashers, etc.)
The sole purpose is (except in rare cases where these people actually lived these fantastic lives, in which case they can go fuck themselves, because really, ugh) the writer of the script regrets the way they handled a situation in their actual life. Well, this is my theory, but I think it’s pretty legit. I had this idea the other day when I started watching The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. I mean, there is a lot of fantasy involved in that show, but what I picked up on is how intelligent and well put together these kids in the show are. There is a part where they’re all seated at Dr. Cerberus’ Bookstore and they’re debating whether or not David Cronenberg’s The Fly is about body dysmorphia or STD’s. I 100% can’t imagine having that conversation at 16. I was too busy trying to be the punkest person on Earth at that time and all I talked about was boys and which musical guest was going to be on Late Night With Conan O’Brien.  Did I just lead a different life than these people, or am I onto something here?
Now, let’s talk about “the one who got away.” I’ve had plenty of ones that got away and it’s probably a damn good thing that they ended up leaving and staying gone, and yet I still harken back to basically any Ethan Hawke movie from the 90’s and think, well, I should see what ole so and so is up to just so I can fulfill my cat-like curiosity and then dwell on it for one-hundred-thousand hours.
When I was growing up, my parents got divorced twice. Well once for real, and then the second time it was a common-law divorce. Additionally, my mom would often take back men she had previously written off because she wanted to give them a second chance. At some point in my teen years, I vowed I would “never” do that because I saw how it never ended up working out for my mom and seemed to be a waste of time.
However, I gave many people who probably didn’t deserve it multiple chances, maybe because it’s true we all turn into our parents, or because I believed that just like in Reality Bites, some Troy Dyer would come stand at the foot of my driveway and tell me he loves me after doing some gloriously fucked up thing that drove me to do something that is the equivalent of running up a huge phone bill with a psychic hotline. I never had the advent of a seemingly perfect Ben Stiller as Michael in my life, until recently.
It’s weird when you go through a certain amount of hoops to get into a relationship with someone. The beginnings of any romantic entanglement are so cinematic and lyrical, but I was never told how to stay in a relationship once you get into one. I grew up where all relationships ended abruptly or seemed alien and weird grown-up things that I didn’t care about. I thought that living with someone and being in love was the end-all-be-all of existence but guess what, that’s dumb. I was over 30 when I figured out this was not the case…. arrested development is not just the name of a band and a TV show, y’all. Relationships take work, and they don’t make problems disappear. They make them easier to deal with, but it’s not all wine and roses. There are some movies that touch on this reality, but not enough.
Instead of telling us how to stay in a long-term relationship, movies often teach us that if our partner has some quality that doesn’t live up to our expectations, some perfect hero is going to appear out of nowhere to rescue us from the bad choice we made. Hello, Billy Zane in Titanic!
The thing is, that in reality, Rose would’ve concocted this entire fantasy of Jack in her head, while staying right by Cal Hockley’s side and trying to remember how awesome it is to have a rich, handsome fiancé, even though he’s an asshole. Jack would have lived because he would’ve found the floating door. Rose and Cal would’ve got on the first lifeboats and they all would’ve lived miserably ever after. This story doesn’t win Academy Awards however. Also to touch on Wedding Crashers, in what world except for the fictional one set before us in this film would Owen Wilson get the girl over Bradley Cooper? Anyway….
Basically, movies are not typically touchstones on how to live your life, which I wish I could’ve figured out before I had so many failed relationships. There are some that are incredibly inspiring and have great messages, but more often than not, they’re fantasy scenarios that people wrote because that’s what they wish they could’ve done. If my theory is correct, I guess I have plenty of my own extremely unrealistic screenplays to write, so I’m going to go ahead and get to it.
