okay i know we dont have all the pages but

The Man was there among that group of thugs that were beating the hell out of levi when he tried stealing his mother's teacup back. the owner of the business the cup was sold to first?

it's not 100% clear what happened between then and the end, but he saw the suffering being inflicted on levi, the threat of forcing him to do the same job as his mother just the same as he saw the depraved brutality levi was capable of by ripping a man apart.

maybe he lived because he didn't take part in it.

it seems like later... maybe to repay his lack of cruelty - not his kindness - levi goes back to his business and gives him his mother's collection of china for tea. probably after one of the cups shatters.

resemblance:

what if that cup, the one he stole back, is the one that dropped and shattered? so he gives the rest because... he feels he can't protect any of it, to keep it safe.

it's almost repulsive, it's so painful and twisted.
