Adderall rant:

I see so many tattoo artists that are bummed over not getting work or falling victim to this new wave of tattooing that basically goes against everything they were once taught in an apprenticeship. While I get it and would most likely be pretty annoyed that a bunch of 20 year olds with shitty Amazon tattoo pens are making more money than me, I do wonder if they truly believe they are pushing the boundaries of tattooing in any way shape or form. Because whining on the internet about losing clients to artists that “don’t know how to tattoo” or “cant even pull a line” is getting pretty tired.

Technical skill means NOTHING if you don’t understand composition / negative space / balance / body anatomy / levels / layering / texture / art history / tattoo history / (not to mention taste) etc. All of these rarely ever being a priority in the tattoo community. Because as long as you can pull a clean line or pack some black, you should be making six figures right? There’s so much that goes into what I do / many of my friends do that goes far beyond needle to skin. And while the “fuck it” mentality is heavily prioritized in my work, almost nothing is unintentional. I rely heavily on intuition while most are too scared to allow their natural impulses to take hold strictly because they are using the medium of skin. Fear will always be the death of revolution and clutching to technicalities rarely ever breeds true ground breaking art.

My work has never and will never prioritize longevity. With most of my inspiration coming from southern prison tattoos and religious / ornate works from the renaissance era, I will always aim for my work to share the same decaying texture and transient essence. No matter what, your tattoo is gonna age and look like shit 30 years from now. May as well have it look cool in the mean time.

I don’t do good tattoos, I do cool ones.
