finally got all my friends in the same room to watch shadow and bone season 2, like half of the people knew the books but i constantly had to explain that i didnt *hate* jesper, and that in fact, he's my favorite character of the story, nor that i think the actor is doing a bad job at playing him, but seeing his character being intentionally modified so he's more appealing to the audience made me mad on levels only percievable by shrimp

like. they speed up his romance arc by 1000% so that people can talk about how This Show Has Gay People In It, and basically taking any competence his character has and making him the dumbest dude in any room, with no critical thought in his brain, so that People Can Explain Plot Points To Him 24/7, and making him the constant comic relief and revealing his like. BIG secret before the actual Six of Crows story starts. and kind of giving him character development about his secret so early on, in a moment that has no real personal stakes to him, and at that he gets convinced by an *invented* character that he should not hide the secret? wild

#myposts #idk. i LIKED shadow and bone but i am a htaer about some choices #because maybe im wrong and they will rock this #but i think it was a huge mistake to do so many changes to the crows storyline #JUST so that the other storyline feels more interesting #because. these things have MASSIVE stakes when they happen in the books.#like. kaz taking down rollins is like. embedded in layers and layers of context and story #inej fighting for her freedom is just like. Instantly resolved? well then WHAT are her stakes in the story anymore?#like. they start into season 3 AKA the season where the six of crows plot only STARTS #with some character development they have in mid-crooked kingdom #aka..... close to the end of their character arcs?#like. sure there still is a lot of backstory to uncover. but. the crows WHOLE THING is that theyre the underdogs no one would bet on #like. theyre 6 weird nobodies who all kinda are mean to each other who against all odds make it #like. for that it was ... actually good that kaz still didn't own a club and that there was a huge gang boss as a threat #and inej was constricted by being owned property etc etc etc #i think the characters theyll do best are nina and wylan and MAYBE matthias #but i already HATED that they removed the... wolf scene and instead made him... NOT fight the wolves.#like. what a cop out to one of the most gruesome scenes in the first book?#but i also hated that this had implications for his character that now just dont exist in the show?#hm.#also back to the underdogs thing. that kinda doesnt WORK if theyre besties with like. the rulers of a huge nation #and have like 100s of other powerful friends somewhere. like. they don't HAVE that in the book
