first the utroms are a lot like 2003, and therre is no krang on tmntov.

the longer they lived on earth the squishier they got bc gravity is different than how it is on dimension x. also they grow these horn-like things as they age. they can get pretty old like 5000+.

they have powers (moving objects with mind but nothing too big) and their screeches can cause hearing damage. they can't speak human words outside of their exosuits, unless they're using a translator device thingy.

they're very intelligent and the reason why they ended up on earth is because their ship crashed there 100s years ago. the mutagen wasn't made to turn earth into another dimention x like in 2012 but it was made to work as some sort of alien fertilizer to revive their home planet (im thinking they kinda destroyed it by polluting it, and its sort if like a rocky desert) and they didn't mean for the mutagen to get on the wrong hands (shredder and animo)

a lot of utroms are a part of the EPF mostly helping them with tech, and TCRI basically provides weapons for the earth protective force (which i mentioned in another post is basically alien police idk) the utroms at tcri do a lot of genetic research as well. mortu is the ceo of tcri 👍🏾and Bishop is the one who made EPF

and uhh shredder was a war criminal who escaped when the ship was destroyed (like in 2003)

Okay so first off; in terms of Actual redesign, I didn't change a whole lot. I'm actually very fond of Jack and Maddie's design's, my only real issue was with their proportions. Like...look as a lady person who is also thiCC I do not have a fucking wasp thin waist and I'm sure I'm not the only one, lmao. As for Jack? Godamnit he looked like a brick on toothpicks. Just Let him be a fucking Bara man! Anyway of course I asked Gally to do this one bc they're fucking great at drawing different body types

I also cannot and will not take credit for Jazz's outfit. I didn't have any issue with her canon clothes aside from them being a bit plain, so what she's wearing here was literally pulled straight off of her original concept art, which I will link here.

Anyway, getting to the Actual character lore now, let's start with

Maddie Fenton

-Full name is Madeline (I haven't decided on a maiden name yet)

-Born and raised on a farm in Arkansas, had a southern accent that she trained herself out of in college bc it was just one more reason for people not to take her seriously. Still sometimes uses "y'all" completely unironically bc old habits die hard.

-She has a really big family, and they're proud of her accomplishments but feel like she's wasting her talent studying ghosts, because really, up until the Fenton portal was up and running there wasn't even any solid proof they existed. Her sister Alicia is the one outlier there, and even if she doesn't understand, it she completely supports her.

-She majored in engineering and minored in psychology at Wisconsin EDU. Her, Jack and Vlad were all in the same engineering class, and that's where they met.

-Maddie is particularly interested in how ghosts think, analysing their behavior, their motives. Not only that, but they aren't just dead people with unfinished business, they've built an entire culture in the Ghost Zone that is completely seperate from humanity, and she wants to understand all of it.

-skilled marksman and 9th degree black belt, (which is. The highest fucking level there is holy shit? I looked it up after I saw it on her wiki page.)

Jack Fenton

-He's from Minnesota (Amity park is in Illinois and him and Maddie didn't move there until after they got married) 

-okay, "but why minnesota specifically" you ask? Because. I crave. Foot ball discourse. 

-minnesota vikings vs green bay packers guys do you UNDERSTAND WHERE IM GOING WITH THIS 

-The funny thing is that Jack only watches football casually while Vlad is a fucking die hard so when these two got together to see a game it was like....

-Jack: Here to chill and have a good time.

-Vlad: Primed and ready to start a fist fight at any given moment.

-I am never not going to be salty about how Canon Jack was portrayed like a complete moron 99% percent of the time. Like no...theres a difference between Actual Stupid and ADHD induced dumbass-ery.

-Am I saying Jack Fenton has ADHD? Yes. why? Because I also have ADHD and I have always vibed So Hard with his Character.

-Jack is loud and easily excited about things that interest him. He's impulsive and fidgety and yeah, a bit absent minded. He has a mouth that clearly runs so much faster than his head. His train of thought doesn't get derailed so much as it stops and takes several different detours on the way to it's final destination.

-and that's only the tip of the iceberg, really, I'd need an entire essay to get into this completely, but I just really relate.

-Jacks skill-set / interests regarding ghosts vary a bit from Maddie's, most notably in the sense that he doesn't believe that they're static entities already set in their ways, completely incapable of change.

-Jack majored in engineering and minored in Biology at Wisconsin EDU.

-Jack's work with tech is a bit hit or miss. He definitely HAS the engineering skills, but the intrest isn't always there and he's constantly jumping back and forth between different projects. He tends to focus on the concept work and schematics and leave most of the assembly to Maddie as a result. It's an arrangement that works well for them, and has drastically decreased the number of unintentional explosions in the lab.

-A lot of Jack's work tends to revolve around ghostly biology and Ectoplasm, figuring out how ghosts are made, what makes them tick, what the hell Ectoplasm Actually Is, how it's used as an energy source, ect.

-and yes, that does also mean he handles the dissections.

-See that facial scar? Yeah, that's not actually there at the start of the series rewrite but it's very important for plot reasons so I had to include it. Can't say much more on the subject because SPOILERs owo.

Jasmine Fenton

-Jazz is a 18 years old, and a senior at Casper high.

-Which means she prepping to go away to college and won't be around to keep an eye on Danny.

-Obviously that doesn't mean I'm just writing her out of the story, oh no. Know why? Because she's also gonna go to Wisconsin EDU. ya know who else is in Wisconsin? Fuckin' Vlad.

-Jazz is autistic, Although she passes for neurotypical in part due to symptoms being completely over looked in girls due to gender stereotyping and also the fact that she doesn't have any special interests that are considered " "too weird.""

- Her hyperfixation with psychology started at a young age in an effort to better understand people, and social/emotional cues and all that.

-Jazz is well liked at school but she's not popular or apart of any specific group or clique. She's very kind and compassionate to people, and just about everyone knows her, but you'd be hard pressed to find someone who actually Considered her a friend. Except maybe Spike.

-I'm gonna have to give spike his own Character ref at some point, but he's this scary looking goth kid that's been held back twice. He's actually super sweet, just really fuckin' quiet and anxious. Him and jazz kinda ended up gravitating towards each other. She might do most of the talking, but they look out for each other.

-its not like jazz doesn't try to socialize, but it's difficult and she's found it much easier and less stressful to just. Keep to herself and let her interactions with her peers stay shallow and superficial. Sure, it's lonely sometimes but it's better than constantly worrying about saying the wrong thing or making some other misstep.

-One of Jazz's other special interests is football, and it's not so much the players or the game as it is the strategy of it? Started out as one of those things you do to bond with your dad, and she ended up getting really into it.

-She absolutley winds up getting into stupidly intense discussions with Vlad about it, too, lmao.

-Her and Danny probably bonded over SBNation bc that shit has both sentient satellites and ridiculously complex football mechanics.

-She's completely oblivious to the fact, but Dash has a massive crush on her bc holy shit this girl understands football (hey bud your toxic masculinity is showing put that shit away)

-I mentioned that Danny was in Cheer for a bit in middle school so it makes sense that she'd also be pushed into doing some kind of extracurricular activity.....so.....she was in a martial arts class for a bit thanks to Maddie and has a good grasp on self defense.

Here's my take on what I've learned and yeah I'll probably sound like a kiss ass to some of you but here is my thoughts.

I grew up with Gen 4 Pokemon starting it's reign, it's the first time I've seen it as a little child and eventually I saw the older stuff and I love it to this day. Now I do understand yes Gamefreak has the price of 60 dollars on their games so yeah they do have resources but remember their projects happen like a year or two after the latest one which yeah is mainly on not the staff but higher ups decision however they are people who have yet to figure out how to put in their amazing old content in with well what feels like a short amount of time.

They spend months literal months having to program from what I've seen over 900 Pokemon now, you really think they can fit everything with their time limit? Now you could ask reasonably "Shouldn't they delay it like Animal Crossing did for a better experience?" Well yeah but who knows if their staff made those recommendations or not and were ignored or shot down.

But like this shouldn't lead to actual DEATH THREATS over a game with magical, god like, alien like, and man made pets that you feed and battle with, trade or literally any mechanic they offer. I'd like to think the Let's Go games were like experiments to see if the game is ready for the next big console and you know what those graphics didn't really lie neither did the size of the game. It can run on Switch, hell they're probably still trying to figure out how the hell will they fit IDK like a Russian region in, Russia is fucking big. Sure BoTW is massive but it took lots of time and Game Freak staff doesn't really get that privilege and they're really used to their old work thinking "It won't be too much" then well they have a lot!

An RNG (Random number generator) with literal random chances on nature and stats and encounter chances along with IDK did I mention about 900 Pokemon existing now! It's a lot to program and design my dudes, don't act entitled I have seen the god damn Nintendo Treehouse live chat long enough to know you're either a scumbag who decides to start sending mother fucking death threats to tired ass people who have worked for so long day and night for a motherfucking pet video game it is Japan my dude they will work til they die it has happened in companies in Japan and the bootlickers who think it's flawless like I get it but it has it flaws OK gen 7 teased Pokemon following you but they never let it really happen.

Game Freak yes makes mistakes that cut your favorite stuff or they try to keep it in but they have to cut it to meet deadlines, DEADLINES EXIST!! Don't act like you've never done a god damn essay that feels really long and takes really long or get this in the art community deadlines are something that are feared because you don't want to rush your project but you like kind of have no choice but to rush it a bit and you feel moody because you feel like it could've been done better at your own pace. Idk what goes on in everyone's lives but it is common with students, movie makers, and IDK game creators, especially game creators that have worked over 20 years now trying to adjust to making something entirely new with different resources.

"But Daddopenguin!!" I hear most of you yelling, "How come your post about this controversy is looking like you bootlicking Gamefreak?!" Great question, I'll answer with this:

I'm not bootlicking I'm stating obvious things that even an old blind man can see but people with vision cannot somehow see it

Listen you can be critical of the game but let people who go to it because of fond memories or just straight up enjoy it, they also see the flaws and point those out but it doesn't mean they can't enjoy it. It seems so popular to shit on games and sending death threats to people who aren't even in control of the situation it's just normalized but so shitty. Yeah bootlickers are annoying and would threaten to kill you if you don't like the franchise and worship it like it's god when it's not that, it's a game nothing more nothing less.

I thank Gamefreak for making this franchise cause it has been there for me and many others to use as a coping mechanism and just to have fun, cute, cool and great times also music is still great to this day. Sure the game is same old same old, and grinding can be boring and tiring, but it's also something for fans new and old to enjoy whether it's for the story or just gameplay in general. Sure there are times where I rage quit the game because a certain Pokemon line has a stupid bullshit rare catch rate but it doesn't mean I'd send death threats over that, it's how it was programmed and yeah challenges are nice to have.

Yeah I don't like that National Dex got cut but I'm not super dissapointed, it wasn't in the first Generation 7 games I'm not sure on the sequels I haven't looked in on that I'll admit. But is this worth making people you don't know hurt and ashamed over things they've been told to do and hell maybe some of the higher ups can't really prevent shit from being cut because of GAME SIZE and COMPATIBILITY with the Switch. Sadly same stuff with the 3ds but a system can only handle so much data being put into it and we'll most of the people at GameFreak have been there for years and still have yet to find out how to properly program a whole lot of new stuff while trying to keep the old stuff in the time limit they are giving. Redesigns can cause reprogramming and changes of RNG data that can only be fixed or changed in the amount of time given before the short deadlines GameFreak decides to give it's own company, why do you think the Sonic movie was delayed, new design causes the animations and lip syncing to be redone and it takes TIME.

I also saw complaints about VA not being in Pokemon games yet and let me say this just as I said with Sonic movie, lip syncing takes time and GameFreak is sadly scarce on it plus it's like what's the point in complaining? If it gets voice acting it gets voice acting, if it doesn't it doesn't, I get it Zelda has been around just as long if not longer than Pokemon and did the voice acting after 20plus years but come on its not gonna completely define a game like Pokemon or not it'll lead to voice work than just dialogue noises like any RPG except the latest Fire Emblem games IS makes longer and bigger games than Pokemon same with Zelda so it's just like I said it either happens or not.

I think I dragged on long enough I had lot to get off my chest about this but this felt like something that needed to be said. I'm not praising corporate bullshit nor am I willing to shit on a game series I grew up with because a few things they thought they couldn't afford to put in got cut I guess if anyone responds a certain way to this they just do and it's either just death threat bullshit or an alright understanding person. I know, I know, I come up with a lot of fucking AUs and never do anything about them! But listen, I was watching Queer Eye season three and it just kind of hit me like a freight train. Idk if it’s been done before or not but fuck it, here’s my version of it!

Patton (Antoni Porowski – food and wine expert)

I’ve always loved the idea of Patton having a passion for the culinary arts

He mainly enjoys baking and sweets but he knows a full range cuisines

Always promoting healthy food options with the occasional guilty pleasure (mainly cookies)

Just like Antoni whenever they go into a client’s house he goes straight for the kitchen and is always smelling funky things or putting stuff in his mouth.

Always makes sure to teach each client simple and healthy recipes that they can continue using in their everyday lives as well as a few fancier ones for special occasions. 

Rocks the fanny pack look like nobodies business!

Logan (Bobby Berk – design expert)

I was actually going to make him Tan but I really couldn’t picture Logan as a “fashion expert”

Our boy is smart and has a good eye for design and is not afraid to roll up his sleeves and get down and dirty on the job.

Also really likes plants so in almost every redesign he does there’s always got to be at least one plant somewhere.

Our boy is still a HUGE nerd whole loves space!

Came off as really serious and cold at first but as time went on he warmed up a bit

Usually the one that ends up driving the Fab 5 car around because he’s the best driver and honestly the other’s are not the best multitaskers

Roman (Jonathan Van Ness – grooming expert)

Do I honestly have to explain WHY I chose Roman as Jonathan?

Most fabulous! Most extra! The biggest Queen ever to slay!

Plus Roman being able to rock heels and skirts is always amazing! Toxic masculinity where? Gender norms who? I don’t know her!

Likes to incorporate a lot of home remedy self care stuff: home made facial masks, exfoliant, hand scrubs, etc.

Has had some funky hair styles throughout the season, from long hair to multi colored hair of every shade.

Just like Jonathan he is the WORST driver!

Virgil (Karamo Brown – culture and lifestyle expert)

Virgil has had the most growth and personal development throughout the Sander Side series so who better to help other people grow in their own self fulfillment

Obviously he’s not as chipper as Karamo but he’s still very kind and warm

Likes to keep things real, he knows when to call people out on their bullshit and how they should use this as a motivator to better themselves

Has a weird form of positive nihilism: “Life is meaningless anyway, so might as well do the thing you want to do. It’s not like you have anything to lose?”

Despite his dreary exterior people still very easily open up to him and because Virgil is a soft boi he’s always ready with tissues and hugs.

Still an introvert to the fullest, so after they finish with each client he just crashes on the couch back at home base and naps for the entire day.

Deceit (Tan France – fashion expert)

I find this ironic because his outfit in the Sanders Side series is very cheesy and cartoon villain-ish. But for some reason in real life I always thought that Deceit would be very fashionable.

Still has that yellow and black color scheme and makes it work! Roman is forever envious!

Still promoting the French Tuck to every client just like Tan (shut up!)

Crocs are an atrocious invention of man and it is his life goal to burn every single one of them!

Can be very cut throat and critical but also very sweet and gentle. People should always feel beautiful and amazing in the clothes they wear.

Has vitiligo on one half of his face as well as being blind from one eye and still looks amazing!

Okay, so the whole “To Gay Or Not To Gay” episode was just a sobbing emotional mess and the Fab 5 all fucking sobbed for hours after watching the epilogue clip

Same thing with the “God Bless The Gays” episode!

The “Sky’s The Limit” episode where Tan and Skyler have that moment when getting fitted for a proper suite and Tan has a breakdown because he had no idea how difficult it was for trans people to find clothes they feel comfortable in while other people could just grab and go so easily. Deceit likes to run a lot of charity events and fashion shows which helps provide clothing for children and families in need.

They all actually have their own charity organizations that they manage and are always willing to help each other with planing.

They call and facetime each other a lot when they have to separate and head back home after each season.

Patton is still the “dad” friend and Logan is still the “mom” friend and their fan base always makes fun of them for that!

There has literally been a moment when both of them have been sitting in the driver and passenger seat while the other three bicker in the back and Patton is trying to be the mediator but Logan turns around and is like “If you guys don’t settle down I am turning this car around, right now!”

On long car rides they like to do karaoke and sing all the classic 80s and 90s bops! Plus a bunch of musicals, of course.

Like, it’s all so gay and beautiful aND I LOVE IT SO MUCH!!! 😭❤😭❤

{Things I thought of when during the first hour of the car drive to the beach; AU where Danny is a living doll which I’m going to add to this blog. I haven’t thought of everything yet but I’ve managed to work out how Dan would work in this verse and how Danny’s first meeting with Vlad would go}

{The accident happened in the lab when Danny was 14 and sort of killed him. Parents happened to not be far when they heard him scream/was just returning to the lab after they remembered that they left the portal plugged in or that they made it have an switch on the inside therefore they managed to watch their son die. Not wanting him to go and - since he had died - they catch his ghost and keep him in the lab. The ghost is unconscious which means Danny doesn’t remember his parents quickly making a doll body for him and eventually attaching his soul to it since his human body is in no condition for the soul (idk if they keep it and try to work on his body so his ghost can be attached to it again or not). He eventually awakens believing he’s still human but starts to get suspicious when his family and friends start to try to be overprotective of him (mostly because he’s a doll now and, if he breaks badly, his ghost is lost since it was automatically drawn to the Ghost Zone). He gets confused about his body appearance at times (they’d most likely try to cover the fact that he’s a ball jointed doll by covering the joints) and later gets more confused when he suddenly has powers and is oddly drawn to the Fenton Portal. This confusion - which doesn’t get answered until the first fight - continues on when he’s banned from the lab even though his parents just stated that he needs to be more careful after he first wakes up and when he’s no longer allowed to go to school. He’s allowed at other public places but only if he’s with others who can keep him safe}

{When he starts to use his powers to fight actual ghosts, he notices his body doesn’t act normal. He doesn’t do the same thing normal humans do when they get hurt; he starts to get cracks formed on his body. That’s when he discovers the truth that he’s a doll now and that his original body is being worked on so he could return to it (him returning to his original body would make him half ghost and the urge to go to the GZ is basically not there)}

{Vlad later appears (he isn’t a doll; he’s a halfa still since he didn’t die thanks to that soda) and invites them all to his castle for that whole party thing. When they get there, Vlad notices how odd they are acting. Jazz seems to be ready to fight something like a bear if it even sees Danny, Maddie seems to be half judging the place for anything dangerous, and Jack seems to be more gentle than Vlad could remember. Later on, the whole fight between Vlad and Danny happens but he knows it’s Jack’s son (since he doesn’t have a ghost form. Just ghost powers) and tries to go a bit more easy on him. That’s when he discovers that Danny has a doll body that hasn’t been repaired that well (his family see the doll body as temporary so, unless a limb is completely useless, he just gets cracks filled) so he spends a long time in his lab actually fixing Danny so his body looks new again. Danny wakes up in his room in Vlad’s castle and begins to panic when Vlad mentions that he found him outside, unconscious. Vlad later states that he didn’t see anything odd which adds to Danny’s confused and suspicious but he decides to worry about that in the morning. When morning comes, however, he notices how his body seems new. This causes him to try and confront Vlad yet his family over protectiveness causes the many chances to slip by. Eventually, the time for the party arrives. Danny is told to stay away from most of the people dancing by his parents who fear that he would get hurt. Seeing how he’s alone, Vlad decides to walk over and start a conversation with him; trying to convince him more than he doesn’t know the truth by asking Danny why his family acts the way they do around him. This causes more panic before Danny answers “I’m still recovering from an accident that happened in the lab.” This conversation later takes many different turns and Vlad notices that - after awhile - he had missed his chance to make Jack seem like the bad guy. On the other hand, he sees this as life helping him with his revenge by allowing him to be more involved with the Fenton family}

{Later comes Dan. Due to his family, Danny - though he does fight ghosts - is not known as a hero; his parents are. Also due to his family, Danny doesn’t go to school anymore. This doesn’t mean Dan is erased. Instead, he was born a different way}

{Mr. Lancer finally gets to have a meeting with Maddie and Jack over Danny and him being taught at home. The two clearly must be busy saving the world (no one knows it’s also thanks to Danny, Tucker, Sam, and Jazz) so having to teach Danny must be more stress especially with Danny being ‘ill’. He offers them help during their meeting at Nasty Burger. Before they could accept it, Sam, Jazz, and Tucker all run into the building to warn everyone about a ghost coming to attack. Mr. and Mrs. Fenton get ready to fight as everybody else runs out of the building. Soon - with them all standing there - a blast hits the tank full of the sauce and wipes them out. Danny who is the only survivor has no choice but to live with Vlad who is the only person he can live with due to the fact that he knows his secret (happened due to the Pariah Dark fight) and is the only person who can actually take care of him and his current body if he ever damages it. Over time, he’s drawn to the portal at Vlad’s place. Here he learns the truth thanks to hearing a conversation between Vlad and Skulker and seeing Vlad transform into Plasmius, the ghost who tried to kill his father. Jumping to the conclusion that Vlad had actually planned the death of his friends and family, he heads back home for the device that was used to attach his ghost to his body. With a bit of redesigning which he did behind Vlad’s back, he soon attacked. His body was destroyed during the fight however Vlad’s ghost half was removed. Seeing how he had split the two, he merged with Plasmius in order to stay on Earth instead of heading into the GZ so he could finish Vlad off. Vlad had no choice but to watch as the new ghost destroyed his home}

{The ghost was later named Dan who continued down the path to become the Ultimate Enemy. Vlad, on the other hand, had survived but stayed in hiding until the Danny from the past appeared and requested help. Valerie and her father started to use Fenton Works as a base for their operations and discovered Danny’s original body. The two had planned to use it as a way to hopefully trap Dan however this plan was destroyed after Dan appeared right in front of them}

{With the help of CW, Danny managed to save the future but was highly damaged. His family take him home for repairs. Vlad later visits in order to check on everybody. At this point, Danny mentions when he is allowed to have a private conversation with Vlad that he knows about his ghost half. Unfortunately for the child, he was never told what Vlad’s ghost half was called or looked like therefore Vlad was still viewed as a friend than an enemy however Danny asks him to try not to keep secrets like this from him since it may become important for him to know about them in the future}

Ya know what I didn’t want to really get into the shit show that is the discussion on the Sonic movie but here we are

I’m gonna try and make this like an analysis, what it looks like happened in chronological order, and what the hell is going on and maybe a bit on how people are reacting

For a bit more info on me I am currently a studying 3D artist because I will get a bit technical at times

I’ll also put it under a read more because not everyone wants to see it so HERE WE GO starting off with where I think shit went wrong in production (Spoiler: People high up on the food chain probably fucked up big time and interfered too much)

(Note: This will be mainly about the design, not about story)

So obviously as with everything it begins with the original designs made by a character designer. Now from what I have seen the studio actually doing all the CG work for the movie also worked on the cinematics for Sonic Unleashed that released back in 2008. Love or hate the game, you can’t deny that it looked and felt like Sonic. So clearly the studio itself knows what it’s doing.

However, the movie might be made with Sega helping (maybe) on the sideline but the production is controlled by Paramount. That means everything goes through Hollywood Big Wig Executives who probably don’t care about source material and also have no creative abilities and also don’t listen to anyone besides themselves and their investors. SO here is a very short, exaggerated idea of the conversations surrounding the design.

Exec: Hey we’re making a Sonic the Hedgehog movie so make us a Sonic that can fit in a live action movie.

Designer: Okay here you go he looks like regular Sonic but with some texture/material/fur touch ups to look more real

Exec: Too cartoony/Not real enough/Something something make it more like humanoid

Designer: But if we do that it wont look like Sonic, might be too creepy or weird, just looks weird/bad in general

Exec: I can have you fired

Designer: Here it is but people won’t like it

Exec: Yes they will, now get to work and make some posters people will love it (or not, it’s hard to say if they would really care as long as people see the movie and it makes money)

You get the idea. This probably continues all throughout production, maybe eventually they give up trying to change minds or they’re just too tired or it’s too late who knows.

So the posters come out and oh boy they were a thing that exists now

And so people do the thing and dunk on the look of it, get in their criticisms, which I think criticising or not liking something is well within peoples rights ya know?

At this point maybe the conversation comes back something like this

Artists: Yo we told you people wouldn’t like this let’s change it while we’re still relatively early in production (mabey) and can adjust it and not spend months with actual animating/lighting,post production

Execs: No no this is fine who cares it’s not even moving yet it’ll be fine

Artists: No it won’t

Execs: Jobs

Artists: Fuck, alright

So nothing changes, time passes, and here we are and by the way

Trailer editor: Hey for the background music I am thinking something upbeat and fun like the Sonic music from the games

Execs: No no make it edgy and cool like Gangsters Paradise

Editor: .... fucking why

So we got the Sonic trailer drop and guess what everyone dunked on like this isn’t even a shock at this point people analyze and criticise fucking everything (especially 3D) this time it just so happened to be on a massive fucking scale

So from a personal note my reaction was “This looks like shit I ain’t gonna bother with it”. From what I saw the general consensus’ were either basically what I said or “This looks like shit I’m gonna watch it anyway”. Absolutely no one I saw said “This needs to be fixed before the movie comes out” from what I saw people basically were just ready for it to flop and we’ll try again later. Even if some people were calling for a redesign I doubt even they expected what was coming next

So, this seems to be what ended up happening

Execs: -trailer release-

Internet: Yo this looks like shit wtf

Execs: Oh shit we fucked up

Internet: Yeah you did

Execs: Don’t worry we’ll fix this

Internet & Artists: What

Execs: We’ll overhaul and redesign him before the movie releases as scheduled

Everyone else: WHAT 

Because here is what that means. The artists and animators will have to redesign (or maybe go back to an old design), adjust the model or maybe worse completely redo it, change textures, possibly adjust or recreate the rig, REANIMATE ALMOST IF NOT EVERYTHING, adjust lighting, re combine the new CG footage with the live action, make sure it all looks good and no clipping

What’s most likely is that this is gonna be hell for the studio leading up to release if they don’t delay the movie, which they have not said anything about yet and that’s not a good sign. 

But now here is where the biggest variable comes in: How much will change?

Minor changes that don’t affect overall proportions and placement of details means they could keep the same rig and animations and just check for touch ups. HOWEVER these kind of minor changes probably won’t help much, if at all. Honestly besides textures and small changes to fur the only thing that can really be adjusted without much worry is the teeth because they can be the same size and they don’t have to deform or do a lot of crazy movement.

But in order to fix any of the actual problems with it, besides teeth, will require a crap ton more work. Any changes to the eye shapes, sizes or placement, and any changes to the mouth and surrounding areas will require a new or heavily adjusted face rig, which will completely throw off eye movements and lip syncs and those will need to be redone.

Any changes to proportions of any kind will require an adjustment of the rig, which could throw off the animations already set and need to rework them almost everywhere, and maybe redo them completely in a worst case scenario. If the hands change at all they have to adjust every single shot where he is holding or touching something, same with his feet, and really same with his head, quills, freaking everything.

All this in 6 months? Doable, but not without a fuck ton of unnecessary sacrifice.

But we don’t know what this redesign will look like, so it’s impossible to speculate on how much these artists and workers are going to be fucked over and pushed and destroyed for this.

Basically, odds are the artists are gonna be the ones paying for the mistake of those higher up on the food chain, and if the movie does well then, similar to what recently happened with game studio Bioware, they’re going to think “Oh it’s okay that it’s all shit for so long and then we push and destroy our artists at the last minute because it works” which it fucking doesn’t. If they had listened to their people at the beginning, this could have been avoided. No matter what some people still would have been like “ew 3D sonic live action” but no where near this degree.

So the final thing to touch on is some of the reactions after the announcement of redesign. Because I have seen... a lot. All across the spectrum.

I am going to try and talk about some of the more basic groups that these reactions fall under that I’ve seen.

Before we get into those though I want to say something that kind of applies to all of them: I think criticizing the design and look is okay. Talking about how you don’t like it and why and how it could be better is good, outside of ya know the extreme stuff like death threats or whatever, not that I’ve seen those really around this project but they probably exist.

So the first one is basically where I stand on the issue personally. The design sucked, they should have listened more and let it be more stylized and it still would have fit (because suspension of disbelief is a thing and what they have now certainly doesn’t fit in any more than regular Sonic would). I expected them to release it, it flops, no more Sonic movies for a while. If they were gonna fix it they should have done it a long time ago. I am not happy that they are going to punish their staff and artists for their own mistakes and now they’re trying to cover it up.

Now the next argument is one I have seen around here and there, and I understand it, but don’t completely agree. It’s the argument that we, as a collective group, complained about the design, and now we are at fault that the artists have to redo it. There is some truth that if the internet did not go “This sucks” then it would be over and it would have gone on to release as planned. Personally though, I feel like this takes away 2 things: 1) The right of consumers to dislike a thing and 2) The blame away from the executives who made the decisions not only about the initial design but also to change it so late in production. Should they not be held accountable as well? There is a piece that occasionally goes along with this along the lines of “You’re getting so wrapped in a kids movie” or something like that but like: This might (?) be a kids movie but really the target audience is largely the adults who grew up with Sonic. Also bad is bad and kids movies can be great they don’t have to be trash and also kids movies can be enjoyed by people of all ages.

There are smaller sections of discussion, usually quickly stamped out, about how “They fucked it up this is their fault” placing blame on the artists, but this usually comes from a place of ignorance and not knowing how the process works and who makes all the final decisions. The other side of that is “Whatever it’s gonna be shit no matter what I am/am not gonna watch it regardless” or “Idk looks fun I’ll watch it either way”.

To basically sum it up The people in charge probably fucked up, people rightly were like “Lol look at this shit” and now those same higher ups are gonna overwork the artists to fix their own mistake
