Chosen-One!Obi-Wan x Jango where Jaster finds Obi-Wan after he’s lost(somehow lmfao,, idk maybe connecting ships like a connecting flight?) on his was to bandomeer and adopted by a haat’mando’ade advisor of Jasters?

(this would have been out on monday except i rewrote it twice T◡T this is by far the best version i already have a few haat mando’ade Obis so i gave this one a twist (ゝω·) thank you for the prompt, anon! i started planning this one as soon as it came in, i’m so happy to finally be able to get to it (ノ*´◡`) i hope you like it!  i am now inordinately attached to the idea of a wookiee raising obi, and wanted to do so much more with chalmun but it did not work out by rewrite three. someday, friend (๑o﹏o๑)

  When Obi-Wan meets the Mand’alor on Bandomeer, wearing his failures like funeral garb, Jaster calls him Haar Gaanla. The Chosen.

  Obi-Wan never makes it to the Agricorp outpost, he doesn’t even make it out of the spaceport; the moment he steps off the transport from the Temple, the Force all but takes over his feet, humming in happiness as it leads Obi-Wan further and further into the port, until it pulls him to a stop in front of a Nova Courier starship.

  A Mandalorian without a helmet turns around from stocking his cargo hold, and knows from one look that there’s something not quite right about Obi-Wan, that the way the opalescent Force ripples around him is not the way it surrounds others. 

  “Haar Gaanla,” the man says, as the Force whispers Mand’alor, as Obi-Wan says,

  “I’m coming with you.”

  Jaster lets him sleep in his bunk the whole way to Concord Dawn.

  When Obi-Wan meets the Journeyman Protector Chalmun, the Wookiee stepping out of his terracotta dugout home on a farmstead that looks like it’s drowning in blooming behot, he calls Obi-Wan Haar Gaanla. The Chosen.

  Obi-Wan smiles around his missing tooth, and calls him buir.

  The prophecy of The Chosen One is not specific to the Jedi, Chalmun has heard it all over the galaxy from as many peoples as he has bowcasters — which is to say, a lot. Mandalore has had their own prophecy from as far back as the Taung, and Obi-Wan doesn’t know what that means for him, somehow raised a Jedi first, but Mando’ad now.

  His first night as Chalmun’s foundling, he tells Obi-Wan the story of the Wookiee warrior that carried her people into the trees and showed them the sky, before giving them her bones to build the first treehouse. Her name, Otwiyaddirm, came to mean freedom, choice, and has a variation in all Wookiee tongues. 

  Chalmun tells him more stories like that while he teaches him how to farm and how to grow, how to care for the behot leaves that are their main income, but also the root vegetables planted at the bushes’ base. Master Tyvokka spoke Shyriiwook when Obi-Wan was in the Temple, but Obi-Wan’s crèchemaster was one of his apprentices, and she taught their whole clan Xaczik instead, partly just to piss her old master off.

  Obi-Wan knows the Force likes to mess with him, lead him to believe one thing before spinning him 540º to another answer entirely, so he knows there is very little in his life that the Force does not have a hand in; that Chalmun speaks Xaczik rather than the far more common Shyriiwook? Well, it’s not as if Obi-Wan is surprised.

  Before Jaster, Obi-Wan had only interacted with one Force user that was not a Jedi, a Zebraki woman that had come to study the architecture of the Coruscant Temple. Obi-Wan had snuck out of bed and was on the run from Master Oraruu when the Zabrak had found him and crouched in front of him — she called him Uifri with a sort of fond awe, and walked him back to the crèche with an impossibly gentle hand in his. Knight Kolar told him later that the closest word in Basic is Chosen.

  Master Plo had called him ‘a lantern in the Force’ when he first brought Obi-Wan to the temple, and the description stuck far into his initiate days. Quinlan would tease him about it, saying he ran a few degrees hotter than other humans, because to Quinlan, he was warmth more than light.

  So Obi-Wan isn’t unused to epithets and comparisons and whispered names in languages he doesn't speak, but he doesn’t know what to do with himself when his new buir starts to affectionately call him Otwiyaddirm, just as often as he calls him cub.

  It certainly confuses Jaster’s foundling the first few times the Mand’alor checks in on Obi-Wan and brings Jango along, who despite being a few years older than Obi-Wan and Haat Mando’ad to boot, can’t pronounce Obi-Wan’s Xaczik name and instead just calls him Nau’ika. Little Light. 

  Even after Jango learns Obi-Wan has a name in Basic, the nickname stays, because though his midichlorian count is lower than even Jaster’s, Jango can still see his light in the Force. Mando’a doesn’t have a word for the sorts of open-flame lanterns Master Plo had referred to, but Jaster says he thinks Nau’ika suits them just fine.

  “Can you feel it?”

  Jango looks up from the stone wash basin outside by the greenhouse, where Jaster had assigned the two of them to wash tubers for thirdmeal, but he finds Obi-Wan resolutely focussed on the blue tuber he’s scrubbing. He’s rolled the sleeves of his red linen shirt up past his elbows, arms toned from working the farmstead, and Jango has half a mind to be amused by Montross’ insistence that Journeyman Protectors and their clans simply can’t compete with Supercommandos — Montross has obviously never seen the size of the sacks of behot leaves Obi-Wan and Chalmun regularly sling from the barn to their speeder.

  “Feel what?” Jango asks, while Obi-Wan works at a particularly stubborn spot of dirt with his reed scrubber. 

  Obi-Wan doesn’t answer immediately, but his expression is relaxed and thoughtful, so Jango doesn’t press, just waits quietly at his side. He had grown in leaps and bounds under Chalmun’s careful rearing, strong and smart and kind, and he looks almost nothing like the tiny Jedi imp that Jango had met six years before. 

  His hair is redder now, baked under Concord Dawn’s blue sun until it’s almost copper in the summers. Farmer-tanned skin is spattered with freckles and blemishes where he had been pale as a wampa in a snowdrift when Chalmun had first taken him in; Arla had been like that, too, and something in Jango aches.

  “Me.”

  Jango blinks, quickly returning to his own scrubbing when he realises he had been staring. “You? Oh, you mean the light thing?” Obi-Wan nods once. “Of course I can, everyone above Force-null can.”

  His relaxed expression tightens, lips pressed thin as the water in the basin moves preternaturally. “Everyone keeps saying that,” he says softly, “even the other Sensies here think I’m special.”

  “Aren’t you?”

  Obi-Wan shrugs, pushing his hair out of his face with the back of his wrist; it still leaves water running down his forehead, and Jango’s brain short circuits, just a little. “I don’t know. The Jedi certainly didn’t think so.”

  “And we’re supposed to care what those shabuire think?” Jango scoffs. “They must be even better at sticking their heads in the ground than I thought, if even the children couldn’t feel you.”

  “Wouldn’t they have wanted me if they did?”

  Ah, well, perhaps Jango should have expected this.

  He can count the number of times Obi-Wan has talked about his time in the Temple on one hand, despite Jaster checking in on him every few months for the last six years. He’s said that his destiny was not with the Jedi in this iteration of the universe, that he knows the Force had not led him astray, and Jango knows he’s genuinely happy here with Chalmun and the Mando’ade, but he also understands that line of thought.

  “Would you go back to them if they asked?”

  Obi-Wan finally looks at him, wide-eyed. “What? Of course not.”

  “Then does it matter knowing what they thought back then, when you don’t care what they think now?” Jango takes the tuber from Obi-Wan’s hand and drops it in the drying basket with the rest, before pulling the stone stopper from the bottom of the basin to drain the water into a pipe that would take it to the reprocessing tank to be reused in watering the fields. “I’m Haat’ad, Nau’ika: I know droidshit about the Force and Force users, and even less about this prophecy nonsense our buire seem to think is important.” He hefts the basket onto his hip and waits for Obi-Wan to hang the scrubbers over the side of the basin to lead them back to the dugout house; he kicks open the door and holds it with his foot for Obi-Wan to duck past him. “I just know you don’t feel like anything else in the galaxy, that people will always want to take advantage of that power, and that you are far safer all the way out here than in the Core.”

  Their conversation falls off as they remove their shoes to join Jaster and Chalmun in the kitchen, and though Obi-Wan doesn’t bring it up again that night –or any time after– Jango knows he thinks about it still.

  When Jango’s starcruiser drops out of the sky over Concord Dawn, crashing into the behot fields and cutting a furrow of flying dirt and flowers right across the farmstead, Obi-Wan is already calling on the Force, oily-black and opalescent and warm, to drag Jango from the wreckage. Obi-Wan wraps it heavy around the both of them, as he kneels in bloody, screaming mud with Jango’s head on his shoulder, as he holds his hand heavy, warm, oil-slick against Jango’s throat until his dead pulse jumps underneath his palm.

Haar Gaanla — “The Chosen”, fan creation for a Mandalorian Chosen One myth behot — an herb with a citrus taste and mildly stimulating properties, most often infused into shig, a Mandalorian beverage used similarly to caf buir/e — “parent/s”, gender neutral  Haat Mando’ad/e — lit. “true children of Mandalore”, True Mandalorians (slang shortened to Haat'ad/e)  Nau’ika — “Little light”, nickname for this specific Obi, which becomes new Mando’a slang for open-flame lanterns shabuir/e — an extreme insult, mostly accepted in fandom to be an insult of an individual’s ability to parent (from buir), which is an intrinsic part of Mandalorian psyche and identity  Uifri — “Chosen”, Zabraki (found with this translator) Otwiyaddirm — name meaning “Choice”, “Freedom”, Xaczik (made by combining names with this generator; myth is my own)

Intrusive

IDK, just a DP drabble that seized me by the hands and forced me to write it. I haven’t re-read or edited lmao so it’s probably Real Bad but I have other shit to be doing so imma just dump it here, sorry to yalls eyeballs

Tucker pokes him in the shoulder.

“What’s wrong?” he asks.

Danny groans. He’s got his arm slung over his eyes and he’s upside-down on the couch; legs hooked over the back and back pressed into the cushions. It’s not exactly the world’s most comfortable position, but if he eases off the gravity a little it doesn’t actually hurt. Besides, the discomfort is grounding, pulling his brain away from itself and back into the physical world.

“Ghost bullshit,” he grunts at Tucker. He doesn’t bother uncovering his eyes. He doesn’t really even need to, not the way he is right now, with Tucker picked out so neon in his mind that he can almost taste his presence. He doesn’t use his eyes to “see” when his friend sits down beside him, leaning his elbow on the back of the couch and drawing his legs up off the floor.

“That sucks,” Tucker says.

“Tell me about it.”

“Do you wanna?” he asks. “Tell me, I mean. Get it out of your brain.”

Danny contemplates that for a moment, falling so still he nearly forgets to breathe. Then his lungs start complaining, reminding him that he is very much still in human mode, thanks, and that he does need air for more than just vibrating his vocal chords.

Danny sighs.

“Urges,” he says. One-word response.

He still can’t see Tucker, but he can “see” him nod. He’s such a pleasantly warm shade in Danny’s mind right now, a color he can’t describe because humans can’t perceive it. Danny could look at it forever.

“One of the fighting ones again?” Tucker asks. Danny shakes his head.

“I wanna put you in a box.”

It’s a testament to their relationship that Tucker doesn’t freak out about that sentence and all that it could imply. Instead he just pauses, purses his lips in the way that Danny can only vaguely “see” (a slight variation in his color, dipping almost orange on the spectrum), and drums his fingers against the back of the couch.

“Like. . . a coffin?” he asks, tone casual. More casual than it probably should be for the subject matter.

“Not really,” Danny says. “I mean, it’s not not a coffin either, but it isn’t specifically one. My brain just. . . really wants you and Sam to be tucked away somewhere safe where no one else can touch you and I can guard you forever. And ever.”

He pauses.

“And ever.”

Tucker nods, the motion burning brightly in Danny’s mind.

“Creepy,” he comments.

Danny groans again.

“I hate my brain.”

“So do I, you’re not special,” Sam calls from the other room. Danny’s itching under his skin with the urge to go grab her, despite how the walls in between them don’t dampen the “sight” of her in his mind. He presses his arm a little harder down over his eyes, as if that could block out her luminous smear across his consciousness.

“We’re having a private conversation,” Tucker yells back at her. “Me and Danny are bonding. Get your self-depreciation out of here!”

“Then stop talking so loudly, idiots!” Sam says. She’s crouched on the ground, rifling through what Danny knows is a box despite neither seeing nor “seeing��� it. It shouldn’t take her that much longer to find Dead Teacher iii, and then she’ll be back in the room. Danny has to keep repeating that to himself.

Tucker reaches down and pokes his shoulder again.

“It’s really bugging you, huh,” he says. “That she’s in the other room.”

“How can you tell?” Danny asks. He hasn’t moved, hasn’t acted on any of his instincts. For all intents and purposes Tucker should just see a normal teenager lying sprawled out next to him, albeit in a somewhat awkward position.

Tucker shrugs. His shoulders bleed color behind them in an echo of the movement.

“Your teeth. They’re always pretty sharp, but right now they look like you could bite your own lip off. You’re not kissing anyone for a while, by the way,” he adds.

Danny’s groan borders on a whine this time.

“My ghost half is ruining my life,” he complains.

Tucker snorts and pokes him again, this time on the cheek. The warmth of his skin, of his presence in Danny’s mind, make Danny shiver. He wants so badly to bundle Tucker up in his arms and never let go.

“Is it just us right now?” Tucker asks. “Do you wanna box up anyone else?”

Danny hesitates, turning that thought over in his head.

“. . .no,” he ultimately concludes, “Not really. My brain’s got my house categorized as safe and mine and that’s where my family is right now, so they’re fine. And Val– well. Val is Val. I’ve always got conflicting feelings there.”

“It would be nice if those cancelled out, huh,” Tucker muses. Danny’s complained about this to him before. Fight and Protect fluctuate in his mind from moment to moment when it comes to Valerie and The Red Huntress, and the overlap when they’re both at their strongest can nearly give Danny a migraine. In the same way he can have a panic attack while in the middle of a depressive episode, he can very much want to swaddle Val in bubble wrap while also wanting to stab her.

“Well,” Sam says, straightening up and starting to (yes!) return to the room, “We can’t do a box, but we were already going to cuddle pile on the couch.”

“I still can’t get over you saying cuddle,” Tucker says.

“There’s nothing more hardcore than cuddling,” Sam huffs as she flops down on Danny’s other side. Her arm swings as she makes to throw what Danny assumes is the DVD box at Tucker, and Danny’s hands shoot up to snag it out of the air before it can strike his friend.

There’s a moment of silence. Danny opens his eyes. It’s weird seeing the world around him and “seeing” on top of it, part of why he’d covered his face in the first place. His brain just isn’t meant to process that much visual information at once, the same way his brain isn’t actually wired to “see.” He tries to focus on what’s real, on the actual light bouncing off his friends and into his retinas, and blinks away the glowing smear that isn’t even on the visual spectrum. He’s holding Dead Teacher iii in his hands, and he stares at the cheesy cover art with the single-minded focus of a guy recalibrating his eyes.

“Ah,” Sam says. “That bad, huh?”

Danny lets go of the DVD and it lands on his face. It hurts, but not that much.

Tucker sighs and grabs the case, standing up and moving to pop the DVD into the player. Danny, with a herculean effort, manages to not grab his ankle on the way by and drag him bodily back onto the couch.

Sam stretches, her long pale fingers tangling together overhead, physical form barely more present in Danny’s mind than the glow of her presence. Then she drops her hands and lays down, plopping her head onto his stomach and peering up into his very-close face. Danny can pick out every sun-starved freckle-that-could on her face, inherited from her parents and dampened by lifestyle choices. In the summer, when even the extra-strength sunscreen Sam slathers on can’t fight back her love for the outdoors, those freckles darken and bloom like constellations in the night sky.

The weight of her head against his stomach smooths some of Danny’s anxiety. She’s here. She’s real. She’s alive. She’s safe. She’s his.

She isn’t, of course. Tucker isn’t either. No one, on this planet or off of it, belongs to anyone, least of all Danny. And Danny knows this, believes it with the same certainty and maybe even the same part of his brain that knows that the earth goes around the sun, but that doesn’t get rid of his ghost-lizard brain chattering away in the back of his consciousness.

There’s the hum of the DVD player starting to spin the disk, then the previews begin behind Danny’s head. Tucker sits back down and, with Sam taking up the real estate on Danny’s abdomen, hooks an arm under one of the legs thrown over the back of the couch. He drags Danny’s limb closer and starts using it like a headrest, cheek pressing against Danny’s shin.

“You guys–” Danny’s voice breaks off. Finally, the anxiety that’s been buzzing at the back of his mind for the past hour and a half is tapering off, soothed by his proximity and contact with those he wants to protect. It’s such a relief that Danny could almost cry. But. . .

“You guys don’t have to be that close if you don’t want,” he says. Because it’s true. Sam and Tucker are under no obligation to play along with his ghost brain, no obligation to surrender to whatever weird instincts Danny has jammed into his consciousness. Danny has no right to ask them to, and he doesn’t. Not ever. They can make their own choices, and he refuses to become the kind of monster who would try to take their free will from them. They’re his friends, not his property, and he’s never going to forget that.

“Danny,” Sam says, “Shut up. The movie’s starting.”

“Yeah, man,” Tucker chimes in, “We were gonna do this anyway. Let us know when your brain’s calmed down enough to be upright, okay? I want popcorn later and there’s no way we’re gonna be able to integrate a bowl into this mess.”

Danny kicks his foot lightly, jostling his leg in Tucker’s hold and bumping his head, but he’s smiling. His friends are here. They’re alive. They’re watching a dumb movie from a dumb series they love and hate in equal measure.

And Danny’s happy.

Why does life always feel like one step forward, 10 steps back?

Like I was having a good day. I woke up and was out the house before 9am (so I could get a blood test, I don’t just go out for the sake of it) whereas usually I’d still be in bed by then.

I got home, read and made notes on two articles for the essays I wanna eventually write. I signed up for a virtual open day for the masters course I wanna do. I watched the first three eps of Love, Victor (that’s all the eps available in the UK so far) cos it too relates to the essays I wanna write and today’s been the first day in months I’ve been inspired enough to do anything research related so 🙌

And I worked out how to do my next crochet jumper finally. Or at least I’ve worked out 90% and well see what adjustments I need to make tomorrow.

So a productive day. I had a nap too. Felt pretty good for once.

Then ughhh. Ongoing situation about paying for my grandads care in a care home rears it’s head again. Tldr version: we only have access to one of my grandads accounts and can only pay for his care for one more month. We’re attempting to raise funds so we can legally access his other accounts but it’s slow going and expensive cos we can’t sell anything easily due to lockdown. If we can’t raise the funds, then they’ll get a solicitor to get access and manage his accounts and charge my grandad to do so. But in the meantime he’ll be growing debt and now we’re being told debt collectors will be involved if it reaches that stage. Which it will :/. Even if we or the solicitor gets access to his accounts, they’ll only pay for his care for another 6 or so months then there’s no money. Which is when they’ll want to take out equity release on my grandads house which is also where my uncle lives. We’ve been told they can’t kick my uncle out but I’m not convinced. Regardless there’s lots of shit happening there and everything takes too much time and too much money and it just stressing me out.

On top of that, there’s the knowledge that if they (solicitors/social care people/whoever) do take out equity release on the property then my dad and uncles will never see any inheritance whatsoever. And my mum only got like £5k inheritance just now whilst my other uncle got two properties -_- and therefore my parents won’t be able to afford to live once my dad retires and it all feels like it rests on my shoulder to try and do something about it but what can I do? I just wanna live a semi happy life in peace and not have to deal with this stress. It all feels too adult, which I am, but barely. I don’t have a clue what I’m doing or what I want to do or who I really am but I can’t do anything about fixing that cos there’s always one thing after enough that requires more attention. But it all just frustrates and tires me so much. Idk. Just need to put this out there somewhere. I tried to explain this to my colleague the other week (before the update about debt collectors and solicitors, but generally the same stuff) and now she keeps checking in with me cos she’s concerned which is nice but also ughhh. It’s a mess all round and honestly the only way all this mess goes away is by my grandad passing away. Which I don’t want obviously. But it’s just left us all in such a mess and even if we take a step in the right direction to get this sorted there’s so no term solution I can see which actually ends up any good so what now? Ugghhhhh

I should really have been asleep an hour ago so goodnight.

Shance Fluff Week: Seas/Stars

*Shrugs* IDK either i missed yesterday and threw this one together?

It’s cute though! A little off point but still good! 

Lance and Shiro had been dancing around each other for years, and Lance has one more chance before summer ends and Shiro slips away from him.

The end of summer was rolling in on bondi blue waves and crisp breaks against the sand.

For a whole two months, everyone was able to get together and enjoy spending a scorching summer together while getting away and finally being able to do this whole “vacation” thing right.

Veradero was gorgeous, and the Fuente family had been more than willing to accommodate all four of Lance’s best friends (“in the whole big wide world, no! the universe!” so claimed Lance when he begged his parents to let everyone stay). Lance had a big family as is, but with the four new additions everything was even more excited and hectic and it was wonderful.

It was the last chance to give them one more summer before the real world kicked them in the tail- also a flimsy excuse for Lance to spend an entire summer with his biggest crush.

Ever since he was a freshman he’d had a crush on Shiro., the charming and handsome adopted brother to his arch nemesis (they dropped the rivalry around sophomore year after…certain…incidents and revelations). This year Shiro was a senior when the rest were Juniors- except Pidge who has only partly a Junior due to duel grade enrollments. Smart little gremlin.

After this summer, Shiro was moving miles and miles away to go to an aeronautics school. It was Lance’s last chance to spend time with him for good- and he would be damned before he wasted an opportunity. An opportunity that went on for weeks as they danced around each other all goofy smiles and blushing cheeks. To everyone else, Lance’s family included, it was obvious who was oblivious- BOTH.

But no matter how each day felt endless and it seemed they had all the time in the world- the air was getting cooler and the sun started setting sooner.

Opportunity was calling, and Lance was damned to ignore it.

He had a plan that had no consequences planned. Whatever comes he was Not chickening out. He had spent an hour staring into his mirror telling himself over and over that he was not a chicken, he was a charming and suave gentleman with a romantic heart and amazing idea

This was totally an amazing idea…

“Uhm…no offense Lance but this doesn’t seem like a good idea?”

Shiro was whispering and hyper aware of the sounds in the full house as Lance shushed him and waved his hand about wildly.

Only a few minutes ago he was peacefully reading on his phone while he waited to get tired- when Lance interrupted and claimed, “dude there’s something really cool happening but everyone else is asleep and it’s kinda lame but you should come see if you want…”

Normally, Shiro was averse to the idea of sneaking out in the middle of the night for unknown surprises, but one look at those big hopeful eyes and he melted. He was a weak man. So here he was sneaking out a window with the boy he was hopelessly smitten for grinning like an idiot because 1. Shiro agreed to go wherever it was they were going and 2. He was dumb enough to go out the window to avoid the creaky door (“Oh my god I can’t believe you just fell on your ass haha” “Lance!” “I’m serious! we totally could have gone through the door oh my gooood”) 

And here he is now, following behind Lance as they wind their way through town towards the rockier parts of the coast. It was a pretty night though, with a calm wind and the humidity enough to keep any chill away. Somewhere he could hear music but for the life of him he couldn’t place it. Lance obviously knew the way too, taking turns that got them to what looked like a semi-abandoned house. It was dark and had some partly dismantled lights hanging off the side…

‘Lance? Are we supposed to be here?” Shiro peeked around the corner while Lance barreled ahead into the backyard.

“Uhm? Probably not but it’s cool. This is my Tio’s place but he’s always here and there for work and stuff. We mostly just drop by when we want to get away from the house or need some extra space. Besides were just using his beach so it’s fine. Come ooon!” Lance started pulling on Shiro’s wrist and practically dragged him through the sloping yard that dipped into a low rock shelf and sand beyond that.

If Shiro was frowning or had anything to say otherwise, it vanished when Lance grabbed his hand. Stupid feelings and stupid face for getting all warm and he knew he had a dopey smile but that’s just what Lance did to him.

Oh god what that smile did to Lance. It had to be criminal to be so cute and good looking all at once. Lance knew this path inside and out, but with Shiro following he was a fumbling mess and his butterflies were threatening to spill out his mouth already.

Oh sooner or later…just give me a little more time.

Lance lead them past the rocks and onto a very small beach that was his uncle’s own private property. The family used it all the time for cook outs since it was right on the water and had a dock that lead straight out into the open sea. He’d been coming out her since was ten, it meant a lot to bring Shiro here.

“Anyways! Here we are! Kind of at least.” He stopped on the shore and looked out at the wide open ocean that glittered under a half moon. It was otherwise pitch black out and he couldn’t gauge how Shiro would react…

Apparently it was good because Shiro had linked their hands and come to a stop beside him. His palms were just as clammy as Lances…

“It’s kinda dark…what are we looking at?”

Well I for one could stare at you all day soooo

“Not yet! You have to get in the boat,” Lance started to pull them towards the old dock. “You’ll see just wait!”

Shiro followed behind obediently, slightly mesmerized by the way Lance’s hand fit into his own so easily. It was a quick decision and his heart had almost leapt out of his throat when he clasped their hands together. But Lance hadn’t pulled away! He’d even tightened the hold!

He was still a little dazed when he realized what Lance had said, ”Whoa wait…we’re getting on a boat?” He stepped up onto the creaking wood and Lance turned his head to look at the taller man.

“uhm, yeah? Is that okay? I promise it’s safe! And technically we aren’t actually gonna be out on the water since its tied to the dock…” he was sounded less sure with each word and Shiro rushed to put him at ease.

“Oh! No no it’s fine! I’ve just you know…” he rubbed his neck and shuffled, “I’ve never been on the water at night. So you know…”

Lance seemed to perk up immediately, “Great! Come on then, just gotta take it slow and trust me…”

Take it slow and trust me? What the hell Lance that’s so lame… 

While he was internally dogging himself, Lance helped Shiro get into the small wooden rowboat that his family always kept tied up. It was practically ancient, with peeling blue and white paint and chipped edges. But it was precious to him…

“Ok so, I’m just gonna put a little more line out and we’ll be good to go!” he made himself as chipper as he could while Shiro sat on the otherwise of the boat and watched. “I’ve been coming out here since I was a kid. First my sister brought me, but when she moved I just started bringing myself. And well, “he knotted the rope tight and sat back on his side with a shy smile, “You like the stars, right?”

Shiro nodded, a little lost for what he was supposed to do. The fact that this was something so special to lance was rattling his brain around. “Yeah, uhm, yeah. Been looking up since I was little too.”

Lance giggled at that before pointing a finger up and grinning ear to ear until his eyes crinkled, “Well then you should probably look up now?”

So Shiro did, and all at once he forgot what was going on.

Above him were hundreds, no, millions of stars.

The boat was rocking gently on the waves, and Lance was watching Shiro with a love-struck expression- because Shiro was gaping at the sky like a kid on Christmas. “Pfft, there it is. You nerd.” Lance shuffled until his laying in the bottom of the boat with his feet prodding at Shiro’s legs. “Come on man it’s easier to look when you do this.”

Shiro shook himself and nodded, “Right right..sure…” it took some rearranging and the boat canted a little too far right for his liking but lance was laughing and that made everything alright.

They were shoulder and shoulder in a cramped boat watching the stars and listening to the waves and it was more than either could wish for. So they laid there and thought in silence for what felt like forever.

Eventually though he had to ask, “Hey Lance, this is amazing. I’m glad you brought me with this time…but how come?”

Lance quirked his mouth before twisting to face Shiro on his side. “Oh, right yeah of course,” he flashed his signature grin but it melted into something more shy and genuine, “And uh..well…you know? I just thought it would be nice and uhm…well I just thought it would, wait no uhm..actually..’ he was fumbling over what he wanted to say now that he had the chance. Years he’d been pining, and he thought that NOW he would just magically be able to say something? He was an idiot…

“Lance- take a breath.” Shiro laughed and reached out to poke the others shoulder before settling back and waiting.

Lance nodded and took a few breaths before barreling on,” Look Shiro...you’re gonna be leaving soon- and I’d hate myself forever if I didn’t at last try to show you…show you uh..” he huffed and sat up suddenly. Pulling his knees to his chest and looking out at the dark water as he frowned and second guessed himself.

Shiro followed suit though, sitting up and worriedly trying to see Lance’s face- did he do something wrong? Maybe he misread whatever this was? Or…maybe not? “Lance?”

“I think you’re pretty great you know?” Lance didn’t look at him but he made his voice loud, making himself wince. “Like…you’re so You! And you’re gonna be gone and holy crow I’m..I’m gonna miss you a lot.” He hated that that made his start getting misty eyed but it was the truth. He was going to miss Shiro, no matter what they were to each other…or weren’t or whatever.

“Oh…Lance hey..” Shiro slung an arm around smaller shoulders and hugged Lance, “I’m gonna miss you to Lance. I know I’ll be a ways away but we can still talk!”

Lance rolled his eyes and leaned into his arm chest,” Yeah but…you’re gonna have a lot of people to talk to… and I’m just little old me…” he gestured with his arm at the sea and stars, “That’s why. I wanted to show you this, give you something to remember me for? Other than being your brothers friend who always got to close…” he pouted at the boat floor and let his hand drop. “I wanted to impress you. And this place meant a lot to me and you..mean..a lot to me too.”

Shiro’s eyebrows had hit his hairline long ago, and they’d crashed landed a few times too.

He tightened his hug and reached out for Lance’s hand again- his heart threatening a reappearance that finally he was going to allow.” Lance. Look at me for a minute.” Those blue eyes were watery and he felt his stomach roll, desperate to make Lance happy again.

“Lance. You are one of the most important people to me. No matter how far I go I will Never be any less amazed by you. This This is amazing! And it’s me you showed it to and it’s my favorite place in the whole world because it’s yours and it’s beautiful and…you are too.” Shiro pulled their joined hands up so he could wipe away a single tear with his thumb.

Lance was seconds away from a blubbering mess. Beautiful? “Shiro?”

Shiro shook his head and smiled with as much feeling as he could, “We’ve been tip-toeing around each other for years. I hope I’m not wrong but- Lance am I wrong? Is there something here?”

The waves rocked and Lance shook his head as fast he could before a happy snort of laughter left him, “Tip-toeing, more like waltzing…and yeah. I think there is?” He tightened his grip and leaned further against Shiro.

Shiro exhaled with obvious relief before pulling his hand away so he could cup Lance’s cheek as softly as humanly possible. “okay…good” he laughed, ‘That’s good. Does that mean it’s okay if I kiss you? Because you look like you wanna cry again and I don’t-“

Lance laughed and nodded even more enthusiastically, “I swear to god Shiro you better!”

They both laughed before Shiro pressed the sweetest, probably most chaste kiss to Lance’s lips but it didn’t matter because Lance was over the moon with it.

They kissed and giggled for another hour or two, letting the waves cradle them safely tucked away from the rest of the world. They didn’t have much time right now, but they were okay, so long as they were together here with the sea and stars to watch over them.

My Museum Tales part 1

(Part 2)

People get angry when you don’t know everything about everything in the museum. “What year did this random event that has nothing to do with the exhibit happen? Why don’t you know? You should know!”

Guest: “What mileage does this car get?” Points at a car made in 1902.  Me: “I have no idea but probably not a lot?” How the fuck should I know?

Guest: “What are the odds of you letting me sit in that DeLorean?” Me: “0 to -100.” Guest: “Why not?”  Me: “Cause you could damage it. Only the curators and specialists are allowed to touch the artifacts. That car is an artifact.” Guest: *Surprised* “Oh.”

Guest asks me what sort of food the dining room sells. I am confused. We have no dining room in the museum. Guest points at the the map. He’s pointing at the dining room of the 1900s Mansion (the museum I work at has two mansions on the property). I have to tell him that that room isn’t a place to eat. It was the dining room for the family that used to live in the Mansion. He is still confused. Nothing I say helps.

Coming back from break to hear my relief hang up the help phone (which is connected to the parking) lot say, “The system isn’t broken, your brain is broken” in such a defeated voice.

Executive staff: “Can you put our events on other organization’s online calendars when you have a free moment?”  No? Cause that’s not how the internet works. Its not possible unless they have a public calendar.

The most common question we get: “Where are the dinosaurs?” Across the street at the NATURAL HISTORY MUSEUM! It’s the building with all the dinosaur topiaries, the stegosaurus statue out front, and the dinosaurs painted all over the parking garage.

Came across a woman changing her babies diaper on the floor of the kids play room. A) GROSS! B)There’s a restroom with a changing table around the corner.

Me: “I’m sorry sir you can park there. It’s a fire lane.” Guest: “I’m not parked.” Me: *looks at the guest who is no longer in their car and already in the building.The car has been there for at least 15 mins.*  Me: Are you going straight back to your car then? Guest: No I’m here to visit the museum Me: *looks at the camera like I’m on the office* At what point does a car become “parked”

The time a catered event tried to have Cherries Jubilee, a dessert which requires it to be SET ON FIRE. The cooks didn’t understand why they couldn’t make it after we explained that it’s dangerous for the artifacts and it would set the fire alarms off. They light it up anyway. Fire alarm went off. Building had to be evacuated.

Radio Conversation: Me: Are we selling tickets at the door for tonight’s event and what methods of payment are accepted?  Employee 2: Yes and cash. Credit card. Check. Employee 3: Wampum Employee 2: Barter and trade 

That time my boss called and said she was looking for someone creative to help her come up with an idea for centerpieces for big annual fundraising event that night because it completely slipped her mind. The event was that night! She asked if I could come up with something cheap and quick to make but also looks nice. Using random art supplies and things we have lying around  the storage rooms, I came up with some flower vase with photos around it type of thing (looked better than this sounds). Took all day but I made seven centerpieces out of nothing .

Guest: “Why are you only open on Wednesday?” Me: “We’re not?”

Guest: “Aren’t you always free on Saturdays?” Me: “No?”

Guest: “How far of a drive is it to the Mansion” They were standing in the Mansion….

Guest: “What’s the Hay House?” Me: “……It’s a house? Belonging to the Hay family? That you can tour?”

Guest comes in and reads the sign with our admission prices listed. Guest: “So these are the suggested prices?” Me: “No ma’am. The are THE prices. They’re not suggestions” Guest: “No these are the suggested prices.” Me: “….No. These are the prices. If you’d like to see the museum you have to pay the appropriate admission price.” Guest: “So these are the suggested prices then.” Me: “NO. You HAVE to pay the admission we have listed here or you can’t come in. They are not suggestions.” She left.

Local police called us to say that people are walking through some dog poop and were spreading it all over the sidewalk by our museum. She wanted us to go powerwash the sidewalk. The sidewalk is city property not the museums. Its’ technically not our job to do that. She got furious when we said we couldn’t do it and they actually came over and yelled. Our boss had to tell her no. Eventually the head of security went out to look and said there was no poop anywhere so he didn’t know what their problem was anyway.

People ask to see objects or exhibits we haven’t had in 40 years or that we have never had period and get angry when I tell them they’re either aren’t here or are no longer on display. The most common ones are: “Where’s the Fabergé egg?” (never had one in the museum ever) “Where’s the mummy?”  (we are not a natural history museum nor do we have anything to do with egypt) “Where are the dollhouses?”   (the dollhouses were on exhibit 35 years ago) “Where are the dinosaurs?”   (again. not a natural history museum)

Guy complained because when he went to our living history site (an old farm) and his newly washed car got dirty, the walk was “dangerous” because it was not paved, there were a lot of people and no exhibits. ……..It’s a farm. Of course it’s dirty and you walked on grass. And there were tons of people because you attended one of the biggest events of the year there. And the exhibits are the buildings and trades you see. What did you expect?

Guest: “The carousel isn’t moving, is it open?” Me: “Yes it’s open.” It’s not moving because no one is there to ride it right now. It’s not always moving. Be kind of hard for new riders to get on.

The employees had a training session for customer service and one of the sections was on service animals. Once the speaker told us a miniature pony could be a service animal we all latched onto it and could stop talking about how much we’d love to have a pony in the building. This went on for days after the training session ended.

Guest comes up to me and tells me that a couple of the women’s stalls are “quite nasty”. I go and tell my boss and the head of maintenance. HofM comes out of the restroom and says, “Why did you make me do that?! Who does that to a toilet!” Turns out someone ahem…missed. I refused to “investigate” for myself. Later he walked by my desk again, said “apparently someone doesn’t know how to use the bathroom correctly”, shuddered and left. 

Guest once spent 10 minutes telling me about his toothache

The joke every elderly man tells when they buy admission: “I’d like one child ticket please!”  [insert fake laugh here]

Guest: “I’d like to renew my membership.”  Me: “Awesome! Just fill out this form and what level are you renewing?”  Guest: “Idk can you look it up?”  Me: “Well it depends on how long ago you had your membership”  Guest: “Let me look on my old card”  The membership cards tell you what the level is. 

The many children who run under the barriers, climb into the antique cars, and move the steering wheel like it’s a toy as the parents watch and take photos. 

The grown adults who reach over the barriers and touch the tires or honk the horns. HONK THE HORNS! The whole museum can literally hear you doing that. It’s a car horn!!!

One of the brides who rented the Mansion garden for her wedding wanted to bring a live horse into the museum so she could ride it out after the ceremony. 

Questions asked by drunk people on the carousel: “Which horse is fastest?”, “Can you make it go backwards?”, *reaches out into my booth* “Let me use the microphone”, “Can you make it go faster?”

I once had to kick a guest out of the carousel pavillion during a party because she was so drunk she couldn’t walk a straight line, lost her shoes, and was spitting on the floor. Guess who had to clean up her saliva…

Each admission has a brick hidden somewhere under it. We call it a “Security Brick”

Birds get inside the museum all the time. We now have a club for anyone who manages to catch one. I’ve caught one myself. It’s always fun watching newbies freak out when another one comes in. I want to get shirts made.

One client who rented the museum was so offended by the “naked” cherubs on the carousel that we had to figure out a way to cover up their “boobs”. We draped rainbow scarves over them.

Here’s to all the wonderful guests who have given me some interesting conversations, hugs, thank you’s, patience, and the opportunities to leave my admission desk and give them short tours full of enthusiasm. I treasure those moments

It started out with a kiss, how did it end up like this? as a list of stuff my schools did to fuck us over, but ultimately ended up as a list of shit that still makes me laugh years later, whoops:

My teacher had been up all night with her dozen children who were all sick and therefore couldn’t focus in class the next day. Due an earlier incident in which I lost my syllabus and refused to ask for a new one, I had finished the coursework for the year a few weeks early and already knew the material we were learning. She made me teach the lesson for her and i dazzled my reluctant pupils with the fact that I knew what DNA stood for and also that I knew everything else, but mostly the DNA thing. Also I maybe found out that I love power, idk

Our co-op director (the principal, basically) was caught stealing money for nice clothes and fancy vacations for herself and occasionally her kids. One of the board members had her police officer husband pay an ~unofficial visit~ to her house, where he found the director’s completely oblivious husband. Oblivious husband divorces his thief of a wife, but besides that she only gets kicked out of the school and is forbidden to return. That thief never went to jail. She did have to pay back the money though

The newly-elected co-op director literally did the exact same thing the next year, but because she and her family were struggling financially. We were kind of relieved she was paying bills instead of going on cruises every month.

Won a character award at my school less than a week after dislocating my brother’s knee bc he tried to steal a dessert from me. He had to re-teach himself to run bc the old way will re-dislocate his knee. The first time anyone realized I was maybe insane (I’m mostly fine now). Also, I definitely showed up to the assembly where I received the award with food I wasn’t supposed to have (we weren’t allowed to leave school property without our parents permission, but no one ever locked the doors or anything so)

Literally was so tight with some of my teachers (which, in a homeschool co-op, just means the parents of other students bc it does not pay well) that I straight up didn’t do assignments sometimes and it never affected my grades until one teacher had ENOUGH of me and my “misleadingly doe-like features” and finally failed me. She still adores me though lol and my gpa is perfect so who cares

Got a hold of the allergen list for the kids at my school without telling anyone and occasionally threatened to smother someone with their allergen just to see their face when they realized I knew

Always missed the first fifteen minutes of home ec bc I hated it and also to see a boy I liked so I could get some attention in the morning

Gave my drama teacher permission to pull me out of class as she saw fit so I could miss lessons every once in a while—and she delivered, even if just to take me to Starbucks and run her next play idea by me

Got my marriage license online (sort of) for fun, then used it to marry my friend and turtle we found (my poor friend is now a widow, as those of you who know abt the first degree murder of said turtle). Brought the turtle to a graduation party in a bag hours after finding him in a creek! It’s a miracle no one caught a disease from him, but he didn’t wanna be touched and I was vigilant abt hand washing.

The year after I left, a girl came out as bi on the last day of school and caused such a homophobic panic that field day was cancelled. (That poor girl, I believe, at least has a supportive family, so I’m sure she’s fine.)

Went to an assembly where the girls and boys were separated. The girls (middle and high school) were basically called sluts and we’re told to stop trying to entice men with our tank tops. The boys, I learned later, had a chill talk about respecting women and how Jesus said that if you look at a woman inappropriately, you need to gouge your eyes out. The only good thing anyone ever learned at that school.

Frustrated my chemistry teacher so much by not doing my science fair project that she walked straight out of class and did not return until lunch time. She still loves me tho

In 3rd grade I got this big award in front of the whole school for ‘most improved’ and I keep thinking about it b/c

It was named after a kid who died in a tractor accident and apparently had behavioral issues that were getting better? the school somehow decided the most tasteful way to honor his memory was with a ‘most improved’ award, and then to hand it out annually to elementary school students, who definitely wouldn’t be creeped out at all to receive something named after a kid who died tragically.

I only got it because I finally had a teacher who knew how to help with/ my learning disorders. And both of my siblings (with similar issues) went on to receive the exact same reward when they were also in Mrs. D’s class. Like, if problem children are repeatedly improving after switching to a new classroom environment, maybe they weren’t the problem in the first place. Maybe get these kids help sooner. (Man, I flipping loved Mrs. D)

The person on the stage had to call my name twice because I wasn’t paying attention. Someone had to tap me on the shoulder. I think I was reading.

It was a pretty weird situation. I still kept the plaque though.

THE KHAN

THE KHAN

Hailing from uptown DC  (14th street to be exact), The Khan has boasted an distinguished career in both the underground music world and DC’s cultural story today. From the same scene that’s delivered the likes of Yung Gleesh, Jay IDK, Goldlink and Shy Glizzy, The Khan’s undeniable influence on his local and national peers cement his place among the rest in the Chocolate City’s music legacy. The hometown hero stopped by CENO to talk about the history of his city, how he  got into music, and the people and culture that helped him get there.

“I’m the Khan from DC – from uptown DC, 14th street. It’s punk, you got the punk scene. You got a go-go scene. You got a jazz scene. Black Broadway was in DC on U street, where I grew up at,” he explained. DC didn’t get the nickname ‘Chocolate City’ for nothing, and it’s cultural significance can’t be overstated. The historically black neighborhood surrounding U street, once known as “Black Broadway,” was a regular stop and home for historic black icons like Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Zora Neale Hurston and educator and social visionary Mary McLeod, to name a few. But as the city became desegregated and black families started attending venues that had previously been “white-only,” the economy of U Street disintegrated and the area was absorbed by rapid gentrification.

“It’s hella music orientated, hella culture there – drill culture, street culture. Now it’s a bar culture, it’s hella shit. Hella lingo and shit like that. But then you got me and my friends. Every artist that’s famous from DC, not everyone can stack that they’re really from DC. But we’re really from DC, people know us in DC and our whole come up. Like me going out to LA and doing the shit that I’ve been doing, it’s never really been done, as far are from like, young niggas. People don’t look outside of DC. Even when I went outside of DC for the first time it was crazy as fuck. I didn’t think it was real. It’s a small city, a little life every day. Everyone’s tryna work up, finesse, do what they gotta do. Everybody.”

DC today looks different. Like any major metropolitan in America, white people have moved in without regard to the black legacy of the city, and they’re taking over. They own neighborhoods, blocks, streets, and establishments. A white bigot who ran on racist propaganda and dog whistle language was just elected to the highest political appointment in the United States, just a few blocks from where The Khan and his friends grew up. “I didn’t go to the White House til I was ten. And that shit’s literally a five minute drive from my house. I could see it from looking down, I could look all the way down and see it two miles down. I’m from 14th so it’s two streets over on 16th, but I ain’t never been in front of that jaunt til I was like ten. Me and my friends went down on bikes and got in trouble for being too close… It’s the capital too, that’s something I learned to accept – it’s the capital, nobody can’t do nothing about that. It’s just some government ass shit. You technically can’t even own land in DC because everything is federal property.”

While everyone’s distracted by what’s going down on Pennsylvania Avenue, The Khan is on the ground, in his own neighborhood, and with his own people. “DC is like black migo shit. Around my way we got a trap building and it’s like Latino people in it, doing they thing. And we got black people in there and we all brothers. Even white people, we like white people. We just started seeing them and was like…I dunno, we should be cool. DC is different.”

The Khan describes music as a staple in his immigrant household, and the metal and punk preferences of his parents and family are easy to track in his personal style and the wave of music he’s known for. “My mom don’t mind if we’re blasting music to the max, she does the same. My mom used to wake me up singing “Chop Suey” as a kid. Every morning. I remember my mom doing that, and I grew up with my dad too, he used to be a metal head. Had like long straight hair, tight leather pants, so my whole family, my Latino family of the side is like that too. A lot of my uncles listen to rock, they all came here during that era and that was the cool kids. The El Salvadorian side.”

Meanwhile, his older brother helped him cultivate his passion for trap music alongside boom bat, and even a more classic New York sound. He gives a lot of credit for the what we might think of as old-school hip hop to that same New York sound (“real hip hop” as old heads would put it). “My older brother got on his trap shit. DC, especially back then was like, everything the hood. Blocks were like, hood, hood, hood. My first album I got was Get Rich or Die Tryin’. So I was on my hip hop shit too. He was putting me onto underground – mixtapes, not buying albums. And then when I started rapping I was into old school hip hop, I used to be on my rap-rap shit. To this day I will bar rap with anyone that wanna go. I’m just more into flows and stuff right now, more into sonics. And that’s just the way I want to go about it. And I feel like everyone that was rapping like that in a sense, wanted to sound like they were from New York. So when the old heads, E-bro and shit are like everyone don’t rap like this no more, it’s like bro – everyone not from New York. Everyone don’t know how to impersonate that. We can’t fake act like we on the train in New York. What the fuck?”

He’s okay with that. The impact of his local sound on the underground rap community backs up the pride he has for being from DC, and creating and perpetuating a sound specific to his his lived experience there. But something DC and NY undeniably have in common is a rapid and widespread gentrification at the expense of communities of color who have lived there and influenced the culture for generations. The Khan describes leaving DC for a few months and coming back to find parts of his city unrecognizable, and definitely not the same place he grew up in when he first met the people who would form the rest of his group, Atomos, The group met at the historic Cardozo High School, whose alumni include Marvin Gaye. “Atomos is Mahi, Red and Chachi… we started this group in Biology class. Atomos. We were like sixteen. It means individual, that’s where the word Atom came from and we were like that’s us, and we just ran with that…we became a super fucking group in DC.”

They were confident off top – The Khan describes Atomos getting booked for their first show off one song, and literally creating the rest of the songs for their set in that same week. “I made one song that was a freestyle everyone uptown was fucking with - “Intricate Softcore Thugging”- I don’t know why. Then my friend was throwing this DIY show, that’s part of the culture in DC too, art shows and things like that. So my friend booked us for that show, it was in a week, and I’m freaking out like we only got one song! So we ended up making a bunch of tracks for that set. And that was our first show ever, at this little dance studio, mirrors and poles and shit. And our first song, we just exploded, as soon we started performing we broke four speakers. We had a big ass intermission at some point because it was like – broke one, oh fuck, grab another one; broke another one, oh fuck, boom, then it’s like this big ass intermission because we had to find another speaker. Then we had to calm them down, move them back.”

“We just kept at it. We were the young kids from DC – to this day we still making history. My man Mahi just walked Tommy Hilfiger in fucking China and shit, that’s cool as shit. No one in uptown DC really did that, even for the whole city, we kicking down doors for people. And whether or not kids know it or not - they not gonna give it to me all the way - but me and my friends showing kids how to do it and showing them the steps. Just paving the way for our whole city. That’s why it’s more about the culture to me than anything. I got a responsibility down there.”

He's a full-time student with good grades, and we're talking cheap used cars here.  Progressive offered a better rate ($400/month for full coverage, $250/month for basic) but they don't want to let him pay by the month, meaning he's gotta fork out 2 grand for six months of coverage...which puts a bit of a crimp on the whole car shopping thing.    Is there any insurance company out there that is a little more reasonable?  Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.
