ok thoughts on the rwrb movie real quick even tho no one asked:

it's been a hot minute since I read the book, but the movie kept a lot of the stuff I remember loving about the book

I will definitely be rereading the book in the coming weeks

was it just me or were the visuals like. weirdly off? especially in the first 45 minutes or so? I don't know how to describe it but the lighting felt like a stock photo and picking characters out of a crowd was like a Where's Waldo

in spite of my complaints the visuals did stop bugging me around halfway through the film. towards the end there were some pretty nice shots (I'm not really a film guy tho, my analysis of shot composition is not deep)

some of the character introductions were. bad. I didn't like them. president Clairemont stands out as being exceptionally stilted in her first scene (although she did feel more like a person as the story progressed)

Something I've been wondering about is, how many years did it take for Sugar Rush to appear in the arcade (and how long did it take Turbo to hack it). Because Roadblasters was considered new at the time and its graphics were still 2D. So it can't have been overnight. Everybody thought Turbo was dead, which meant that he was hiding up until Sugar Rush was plugged in; that couldn't have been good for his mental health. (for being so boastful he sure knows how to stay out of the public's eye.

Probably was Q*bert's neighbor for those years. While a solid timeline has never been confirmed, most say it was 10 years after the RoadBlaster incident to Sugar Rush being plugged in, and according to one of the writers, Turbo took over before anyone even played Sugar Rush.

All I can think of now is Turbo, this 4-bit character walking in to a high-graphic game and having a mind swirl for a second. Very colorful and radiant in comparison to his own game where it was just like, what, 6 colors max? But in that 10 year gap frame, he did learn about code (which is still such a wild thing to think about but hey, man had nothing to do for 10 years), and when he saw Sugar Rush, immediately went to its motherboard. Created his own model, his own data box, yanked Vanellope's code connections and boom, a new home.

Gene's VA (along with a Gene puppet) mentioned something among the lines of "When Turbo used to come to the penthouse, he would leave mud tracks everywhere." Not sure how canon this would be, but it would show Turbo was at least familiar with Fix-It Felix and would go over for, idk, parties? Would also make sense given how Felix and King Candy/Turbo never interacted again in the whole movie.

And also, I don't know how much Turbo would actually even boast about given that his selfish actions caused the death of two games and most likely his own fellow game characters (RIP Turbo Twins, I know you're out there somewhere). I can imagine not a lot of people wanted to be around him.

for the character ask game: I'll throw Light at you :D I figure he might be an interesting one for the "first impression" vs "what do you think of him now" comparison

oh lord. that might be kinda difficult actually asldfkjsdklfj i started reading DN sooooo long ago... BUT i will do my best!! (ask game)

first impression: i genuinely don't remember all that well. to be entirely honest, i don't know if i even thought about him all that much at first-- if i'm not Fixated on a story for some reason (like Serious fixations that i blog about a lot on here, or even just paying extra close attention like for an assignment or something since i watch a lotta movies for film classes) i tend to not do a whole lot of analysis for my first go at a story =3=" like i'm almost Always shocked by plot twists cause i won't even bothering stopping to think "oh shit, what's gonna happen next," i'll just be too Invested in the Moment to think ahead. (guess i kinda do that in actual irl social situations too... all my thinking comes afterwards LMFAO i'm very no thoughts head empty all Survival Instinct when i'm talking to people. whoops.) the fact that i started reading the manga way back in my freshman year of high school (Quite a few years ago now) also doesn't help. lmfao. and also the fact that i stopped reading midway through like, vol. 9/10... ;w;

if i had to guess though, i think my (somewhat fandom-osmosis influenced) view of him was that he was kind of an uptight dumbass with highly questionable morals. scrolling all the way back through the death note tag on my archive kinda points at this, like my mild amusement at these three posts speaks to that kind of surface level view of him. i certainly didn't have a lot of nuance or original hot takes involved in how i thought of him-- not until this post fucking exploded my mind a couple months ago and dragged me into the Trenches for good. idk though, i think a lot of my currents views on him were still present, just kind of dormant or not yet evolved...

favorite moment: ehehe i've said this before, but his death!! in the manga specifically, but i enjoy any solid light death in any adaptation (the stairs in the anime & requiem in the musical, in particular). i think i've read the last few chapters of DN the most overall, from his speech until those 2 black pages... this panel is forever burned into my mind as one of if not The best page in the entirety of DN to me.

perhaps i'm just biased since i re-read the entirety of DN a second time just to remember the context so i'd be prepared getting into the ending, but that final volume of the series (eh final two volumes? i have the black edition, vol.6) will forever hit the hardest to me. light's Terror upon realizing he's going to die is just so absolutely deliciously horrible, it makes me sick to my fucking stomach in my favorite way. it's such a cathartic comeuppance, a vicious humbling that no other adaptation has really managed to get at in the same way for me. luv watching u die bbygrl <33

idea for a story: cries forever. uhm... lawlight but it's this tweet...?

unpopular opinion: this is also kinda hard to answer cause i feel like most of my Hot DN Takes are just. ways of adding additional nuance to common fandom takes? e.g. i don't think light is all that overtly bigoted, or at least not in a way that He himself is aware of. like, i've definitely made a joke about light being a republican before, but realistically i think light's politics are just about whatever he thinks will make the most people like him-- he just skews more conservative a lot of times cause he's in a very privileged, pro-cop household and social environment.

i guess my hot take might be related to that, actually-- i've talked in-depth about my thoughts on light's intelligence before so i won't get into That again, but as a kind of sidenote to those points, i don't think light is very emotionally aware when it comes to reading himself. part of this might just be a side effect of the KIRA stuff, the Cycles he traps himself in to avoid having to think about all the ways he Might Actually be a Bad Person, but part of it might just be his immaturity or (male) socialization as well?

i actually find this kind of relatable about him, sometimes-- like in the second half of the series, he often responds to Panic with an anger response, which he usually takes out on either misa, ryuk, or the JTF (usually matsuda, since that's the most Acceptable target to get annoyed at for dumbassery). light Feels everything very strongly, often in contrast to L who very rarely gets attached to things (except for the rare cases where he gets Super attached) but he doesn't really have a good outlet for dealing with those feelings so he just represses everything instead. you can see this w/ his depression in the second half of the series too-- Work & L & KIRA, balancing all those titles and responsibilities is what matters, so he autopilots through it all in a desperate bid to escape facing the fact that his soul has been withering for the last half a decade since L's death.

it's hard to be a person when you're trying to meet Everybody's expectations, i guess, and KIRA does nothing but provide light with even more expectations to live up to if he wants the validation that will definitely totally absolutely make him happy and his life perfect and amazing and meaningful.

favorite relationship: i mean, ship-wise it's obviously lawlight, though i have grown somewhat of a soft spot for matsulight after writing them recently. for character dynamics just in general though-- i really really really like how good yagamane are at casually torturing each other just by Existing, one day i'd like to write a fic about those two set at some point during the time skip. i also love any moonriver interactions, ofc, those are some of the funniest in the series just for how fucking dramatic light is, especially in comparison to the Dead Inside-ness of near. the ways that light idolizes his dad is also very interesting to me, and i'd like to look into that more.

as for more underrated dynamics... i think i'd like to look into some mello/light stuff a little more sometime :3c ehehe

favorite headcanon: HM. hard to pick a favorite. uhh as more of a minor one, i really like that idea that light counts to 40 to calm himself down. actually, speaking of-- in terms of Mental Illness headcanons that i don't see super often, i really like giving light anxiety. for no particular reason. <- (projecting) askfjsdjk ok but like in terms of general/social anxiety specifically, not just OCD (though i'm fond of that one too). this is mostly because i think light's anger problems are just a product of his underlying anxiety mis-management, though again i may just be projecting SO. probably about time to end this post huh. askldjfksldjfkd

yeah it’s the basic one, but i think that fits him! If I had to pick another outfit it would be the Pro one, but I genuinely can’t see him in anything else other than the boring chef outfit. I feel like if he wanted to change it he def could (I mean look at his imp outfit) but the basic chef outfit is very solid for him! If it ain’t broke don’t fix it! 7/10

Orion

I know the outfit is very clashing and has a bunch of colors, but in Dan’s defense: Orion’s makeup already has a bunch of colors, and when you look into it the colors the outfit has actually matches with the makeup a bit! and also, I kinda wish Dan didn’t have the makeup be as out there for the sake of those drawing fanart, but at the same time this is Daniel Failboat. Insane designs are expected. That being said though, I can’t change the clothes or makeup even if you forced me to. the context for it is just so freakin cute!! we all love great fathers in this household. He makes me wish I had a meaningful relationship with my dad. 6/10

Friend

I like it! I have a few minor gripes though. This may be a bit of a hot take, but I don’t like Zone (the hat) or Ship (the staff). Not in the Finale at least. I think Friend should’ve removed them both to show that they’ve moved on and don’t need something like Lee anymore. Symbolism and character arcs and all that other fancy stuff idk. Also I like that she looks more like a priest than a Cleric, it makes sense! He’s really religious in-universe and their war cry is literally “die, sinner :)”, so I don’t have any problems with that! As much as I like her in purple, he looks oddly good in a black and white outfit too! 8/10

listen guys I’m sorry but her outfit kinda sucks.. the bright pink hearts don’t really give off the same vibes as her first outfit did.. I get where Dan was coming from with it but I just personally don’t like the design :((

I think that he should’ve went with the emo goth outfit for her instead, especially since it fit her more and the fandom latched onto it like a moth to a light, but that’s just me. it gets a free half point for matching up with Bill though, 3.5/10

look I love it but the actual armor part is so overdesigned. I hate drawing that thing. that’s my only problem though the rest of her outfit is cool as hell!! Let’s go lesbians. 8/10

This kind of outfit fits her so well omfg. The stupid bowtie? The short sleeves and general lack of lab safety?? The triangle patterns??? It all just screams “Chi” to me! Thank you Miitopia for creating this outfit. Flawless. 10/10

the catsuit is very boring, but it is also very iconic. I like it. I’d give it a solid 7/10. But I don’t wanna talk about that one. I wanna talk about his outfit when using the Power of the Scythe.

He killed god in the Bee Movie shoes?? The Piss Adidas??? It just. doesn’t really fit the Miitopia vibes to me, and I think this could’ve been better as an outfit for ACNH. I opened tumblr around 6 in the morning when my husband left for work, and I've been thinking about it on and off since, lollol. It's been several hours

I'm pretty well versed in a majority of the series, yes, but some games and movies are excluded since I haven't personally seen or played them. On that note?

Unsure if I have a solid character for the title of least favorite? I have a least favorite pokemon, and that would be probopass. I've mellowerd out on it some but little me really didn't like them big ol' eyes with the massive face and stache

So, I'll make a small list?

Whitney: Nothing against her personally, I suppose. She's young and has a lot of emotions that she gets overwhelmed by. But, idk, I never really vibed with her. If I were to play her, I'd... show her a little further down the road. Still uses cute, mostly normal types (splashing in fairy types these days), but a hella capable woman, still with her world ending miltank, lol

1. Hawaii: Part II by Miracle Musical

I love love love Hawaii: Part II. There is something going on here. The only album this band ever released before disappearing into the aether, with a supposed overarching narrative, and just banger after banger? I think Labirynth is the only song on this album I actually dislike, and almost half of them are in my permanent rotation. I love when albums have songs that seamlessly flow into one another, too! God. This album has motifs???? Wah. There is nothing I could say about this but please give this album a listen if you've never heard of it. It's... I don't know what it is really. It's so good. The only thing that could have made this better would have been including Variations On A Cloud at the end instead of releasing it as a single.

2. Powstanie Warszawskie by Lao Che

I am making you suffer through Polish music and I don't even feel bad. Remember what I said about an overarching plot and songs flowing seamlessly into each next one? Well this is that but on steroids. A Warsaw Uprising themed music album?? No way that could work-- *gets blasted by the power of Lao Che* Like. Jesus Christ. They really made this and they put their all into it huh. This fucks severely.

3. Worlds by Porter Robinson

Is this a good album? Yes. It's a very good album. It's an incredible album filled with absolutely amazing songs. Is this why I put it on here? No. Honestly, Worlds was just so formative to me I think I couldn't not include it in here even if it wasn't amazing. Thankfully it is amazing. It really feels so so important, not just to me but to other people too. I don't know. I just like to put it on, close my eyes, and not do anything but listen. (For the record I really like Nurture and I think Sweet Time is extremely good and Blossom is extremely painful, but this is THE Porter Robinson album.)

4. The Click by AJR

You know what it's like to be in your 20s in the year 2024? Because AJR know, and they're making me feel seen with almost every song on this album. This one also kinda has motifs? It has an Overture with most of the songs included in some way. Anyway, I think most of the songs here are straight up bangers but if you don't wanna listen, maybe at least read through the lyrics. If you're in your 20s or early 30s now, I feel like it captures that feeling painfully well.

5. Human Bloom by RADWIMPS.

Man, I couldn't possibly start talking about my music taste without mentioning RADWIMPS at some point. Consistently my #1 artist at every year's spotify wrapped, at least one of their songs in my on repeat playlists at all times, forever and ever in my heart and in my mind. This album is my favourite of theirs, probably because I was obsessed with it just before the pandemic hit — maybe it feels like the last time things were good or something? Idk! Stick Figure was my favourite song for so so so so long. And Sparkle.... Man. I have no words for Sparkle. All around a really really solid album with quite a few bangers.

6. The Eminem Show by Eminem

Sometimes an album is only good because it came out when you were 17, and sometimes it's only good because you were obsessed with it when you were 17. That's what this is to me. This is me trying to get through high school. This is me coming home on the bus on hot summer days. This is the soundtrack to my teenage angst and my teenage joy.

7. Forever Daze by RADWIMPS

Hey guess what I'm obsessed with this band. I wanted to say this one just came out a few months ago but I checked and it was in 2021???? So time just isn't real anymore huh. Not as dear to my heart as Human Bloom, but I feel like this one has a more... consistent quality. All the songs are good. And Masaki Suda featured on one of them???? Heaven.

8. Mentors by Fish in a Birdcage

Okay so this might be recency bias because I think this came out like two weeks ago? But I am so obsessed with this album. Long Way From Home stole my heart when they released it as a single, and the rest of the album is also sooo good. Not just two great songs in an otherwise mediocre release: this has a few great songs in an otherwise good release. Really liking this one.

9. All At Once by The Airborne Toxic Event

I have no idea what I can say here. This is my go-to when I'm writing but want something more uniform than my playlists. It has a very distinct vibe, but not sure if I could pin it down. I only listen to two songs from this one outside of the album, actually, but I will often play the Whole thing.

10. Atlas by Sleeping At Last

Can any music rec list be complete without mentioning Sleeping At Last? I mean it probably can, but not one of mine. I'm cheating a bit by listing what is actually two albums: Atlas I and Atlas II. I think of it as one single experience though. I couldn't pick just one of them if I wanted to. Part I had the planets series (and Sun!) but part II had the senses series, and Hearing is one of my favourite songs of all time. Touch also knocks me out every damn time I listen to it. Man's got a real gift for writing lyrics. Probably a good, solid way to end off this list.

colby had some very interesting fits. same with sam.

first night - adam sandler, or at least that's what i'm dubbing it. 10/10 love it lmao

second night - cowboy. um… kinda lazy, but whatever. 6.5/10

third night - skeleton fit. so close to being just okay. why he'd wear those leather pants when he has actual jeans with skeleton bones on them, idk. 5/10, maybe less bc i hate those pants lol

fourth night - racecar driver. kinda weird, kinda cute. his pants looked crisp and i kinda like that. his jacket said ssri and that made me giggle. 7/10

you know when people get angry about plotholes or contradicting canons or whatever. i'm sicck of it. if you want something with a solid immutable canon maybe watch something that doesn't heavily involve time travel and also wasnt written over 60 years by multiple different writers with differing opinions. like to me doctor who canon is everything and nothing at all. it's a grocey store where you get to pick and choose what to put in your cart. like idk. maybe go read unnatural history and cry about it guy

I have far too many problems and raising a kid would just wind up with me placing at least HALF of those problems on them. No. This curse ends with me.
