I had two people ask for some advice on starting up/running a blog, so I thought I’d make a little post for anyone else looking for advice! There’s no one right way to run a blog and I am by no means an expert. This is just a compilation of some of the things I’ve learned :) 

Feel free to add advice to this!

- The first thing is something I cannot stress enough. Write for yourself first. You will be absolutely miserable if you’re only writing for attention. I’m not saying it’s easy, but it’s so incredibly important. If you don’t like a prompt, fandom, or scenario? You don’t have to write for it! A personal example: I’m a theatre kid and total musical nerd. I could probably write some compelling Dear Evan Hansen or Hamilton headcanons if I wanted to, but I don’t. That’s fine! I’m allowed to say I won’t write for it and deny prompts/requests for those fandoms. 

- Set boundaries. This is a very mixed community with all sorts of creators and participants with hands in different baskets. Don’t want minors to interact? Put minors DNI in your bio. SFW only? Put it in the bio. No RP? Bio. This goes for private conversations/askbox/other interactions as well. If someone comes into your askbox/dms and says something that makes you uncomfy, shut it down. 

- My advice is more geared towards writing than art or video, but I suppose you could apply this advice as well. Make what makes you happy! If you’re only in one fandom, feel free to stay there and make content for it. Multi-fandom? Excellent! Completely non-fandom? Epic! Make the content that you want to see and the content that makes you happy to create, especially if you’re in a more niche fandom/area. 

- Organization. ...I’ll admit this one is more of a personal pet peeve than something urgent, but it is something that people positively respond to. If you have some sort of consistency/organization to your blog, it’ll make it easier and more enjoyable for people to navigate. Make a fandom list/indicate your fandoms somehow (mostly for prompt purposes. people can’t read your mind, so it’s important to tell them what you will write for and what you won’t, however you want to do that)! 

Make a masterpost/link your fic tag! Use a fic tag of some kind. Give your fics summaries and leave a little bit of the fic above the ‘read more’ to intrigue folks (look at #my fics and my masterpost for basic examples of how I do this, if you need!). Use read mores. Please use read mores (if you can, idk if they’re on mobile. regardless no one wants to encounter a three thousand word block of text on their dash). (No seriously though, organize your blog, even if it’s super simple. literally just a ‘mine’ or ‘my fics’ or ‘[pseud] writes’ and a fandom tag. It’ll make it easier for people to find your stuff and support you)

- Practice general internetiquette. Please remember that the people in this community are real people with feelings, boundaries, and lives outside of the blog that they run. Be genuine and people will respond to you! Don’t manipulate people into likes/reblogs/attention. No one wants to be on the other end of that. Being in this community isn’t a transaction or a mosh pit, it’s an experience.  

- Be ever-so-liberal with the block button. Someone’s user makes you uncomfortable? They give you bad vibes? They’re a minor/older than you and you don’t want them interacting with your content? You don’t wanna see their blog for some reason? Block em. This goes for anons too. That’s what the button is for. Don’t feel guilty for using it. Use it. 

- How you write is 100% a personal choice and not really something that I can give advice on, but embrace your style! take prompts if you want, or don’t. Write oneshots, series, drabbles, or novels. Write romantic, or don’t. Etc. Change things up if you feel like it. Do what you want. Your blog, your style, your rules. 

- Numbers matter. Don’t let them define you. This is a bit of a harder one to explain, but I will try. I often say that I don’t care about numbers, and I really don’t, but that’s not to say that I don’t see them and they have zero effect on me. I absolutely notice and am bummed if a fic doesn’t get notes, or at least the notes that I was expecting. That is entirely normal and okay to experience. What isn’t okay, though, is creating for the sake of getting notes/numbers/attention (re: write for yourself first, internetiquette). If you find yourself relying on tumblr for gratification and a reward, I implore you to take a break. I’m not your therapist or your parent, I’m not gonna tell you what to do, but when you make things only for the sake of notes, people notice. Celebrate your milestones. Know that it’s okay to be bummed about low notes/celebrate getting plenty. Just make sure that you don’t depend on the numbers for your happiness, or you will be miserable.

- You’re (probably) doing this for free. You are providing people content: a service. Produce as much or as little as you’re comfy with, but always remember that. No one is entitled to what you make. If someone asks you for headcanons, sends a prompt when prompts are closed, etc, and you don’t feel like fulfilling it? You have no obligation to do that. Getting commissioned is another story entirely, but as long as you’re making free content, you have zero obligation to do anything for anyone and certainly no time constraints. It can take me months to finish prompts, and that’s okay. I do them when I do them and I fill them how I want to. If my prompts are closed, I deny new ones until I’m ready to accept them. Make yourself happy first.

- How you interact with others is up to you! It’s generally considered good practice to like/reblog your mutuals fics/art, but this is not necessarily a hard and fast rule. I veeeeeery rarely reblog fics for fandoms that I’m not in, even from my mutuals. What you can do to show your support (and you should try and show support somehow. No one is in competition. Everyone’s in your boat, whether they have no followers or 1k) is send an ask/reply to the post/leave tags to let the author know you liked it. Like the fic and don’t reblog it, if you don’t want to. Just make sure you show your mutuals (and others in general!) roughly the same support they show you, however you decide to do that. Treat others how you want to be treated, as cheesy as it sounds :)

- Don’t repost content that isn’t yours without express permission from the original creator, and credit them appropriately. If you see a cute piece of tickle art and the artist doesn’t want it reposted? Don’t repost it. Don’t post fics/videos/gifs that aren’t yours (obviously if it’s like a scene from a movie/a clip on youtube that’s different, but don’t take credit for things you didn’t make, including ideas). Can’t tell you how frustrating it is to have work stolen from you. Don’t be that person. ‘Credit to original artist’ and ‘credit unknown’ is total bullshit btw. Link/tag the creator in the original post and make it clear you don’t own the content. Best practice is to ask the original creator if they’re okay with reposting, work inspired by or connected to theirs, etc. This goes doubly for saving/downloading someone’s fics. 

- It is not illegal for a minor to have normal, nonsexual, healthy friendships with people older than them. There’s a weird attitude that minors have nothing of value to offer adults besides a relationship/sex, which is...not true? Minors are thinking, living human beings with feelings, thoughts, and opinions. You can talk to them like normal people, because they are. Just obviously don’t talk about/introduce sex or endanger them. Minors don’t bring up sex/activities you’re underage for with an adult. IDK this isn’t a seminar just...don’t be weird. Adults can offer great life experience, support systems, and the basic joys and needs of human connection. Minors can too. Mind your business unless someone’s actually in danger. The next point is a caveat, though: 

- If you’re a minor, don’t interact with NSFW blogs/blogs with ‘Minors DNI’, NSFW blogs don’t interact with minors, etc etc. Not your parent or whatever but this is pretty common sense and it’s for everyone’s safety, but especially the NSFW person. internettiquette!

- If you use your TK blog as a side blog (meaning you have another blog as your main blog, not two separate accounts) and don’t want your main exposed, that is up to you. I recommend not liking posts. Also, follow people that you trust. These actions route through your main blog and your main will show up in the notes. You can reblog from a sideblog. If you want to send an ask “as your tk blog”, send an anon and sign it somehow, like ‘hey :) // @/tickle-bugs’. It should tag you in the post so you get a notification when it’s answered!

- Find your people! As an anxious person this one has been hard for me, so I know it’s hard for a lot of people. Fandom is literally a community of shared interest. Peachy and I have an iron bond almost two years later and we met talking over shared interests. You can absolutely find your people here. If someone makes you happy, strike up a conversation! Send an ask! You never know what doors it might open or whose day you might improve :)

- If you were an anon/lurker on someone’s blog and they inspired you to write/submit/start your own, sign your messages!! the common form that I see is either an emoji or [noun/context of the ask]!anon (prodigal!anon (i miss u every day), butterfly!anon, etc.) Let us know how to find and support you!! Those messages produce good brain juice. 

- The big finale: Have fun. If you’re not having fun here, maybe you could tweak something to make things enjoyable. Running a blog is like driving a car. Keep your hands on the wheel, respectfully indicate your intentions (flashing lights optional), and be safe. Poebody’s nerfect, y’know. If you make a mistake, course correct. I’m by no means perfect. Your favs aren’t either. Just do your best and have a good time :)

What inspired you to try/create that muse/s: well , if you’ve been with me long enough then you know that tooru started out as an AU ! o.ikawa t.ooru, where instead of attending s.eijou , he went to s.hiratorizawa ! to be honest , i kind of just wanted to try my hand at writing that kind of thing ? it was the very first time i had made a tumblr rp blog , so i had no idea that people rp different verses of the same character on one blog !! i originally rp’d on deviantart , and it was very commonplace to have different blogs for different verses ... i had over 70 rp blogs on there and most of them were literally the same 2 characters but in different AUs LMAO ... so imagine my surprise when i saw people rp’ing different AUs on one blog ... RP’ing multiple muses on one blog ... !! but i kinda just stayed with my iteration instead of playing canon ! kawa anyway , since i didn’t really see the point in starting over . as tooru developed more , though , i began to use him as a venting tool because this was a part of my life where i was really depressed . but as time grew on and i eventually made him into an OC , he became a much happier character . he really is my best friend ; he’s been there for me through it all , and even though he’s just fictional , i really owe him a lot for helping me out during rough times .

What is inspiration for that muse/s: well , currently , a lot of things ... lots of music , japanese culture + religion , and also my own experiences . in general , i have a p.interest board for him , so ... maybe you could say i draw inspiration from that , too ! i also rly enjoy the band MILI . their songs really fit tooru , like ‘ bathtub mermaid ’ . i’ve also been listening to hello , again and am planning on drawing something based on it for him ( + the song’s prequel , “ goodbye ” ) . i mainly tend to daydream while listening to songs , so ... yeah . as for characters who serve as inspiration for tooru ... well , i think that’s an artist meme , so i might just fill it in in lieu of answering this properly lol ... but two i can think of off the top of my head are leon from f.ire e.mblem e.choes and n.eferpitou from h.xh ! 

Thread/AU that made you really happy: B.NHA AU ... !! i’m hyperfixating sm on that one ... idk , a lot of planning and plotting goes into it , esp since a lot of my mutuals are in the fandom . in particular , i love love love the story i’ve created with @noquirk . i literally cannot envision a more perfect plot for tooru in this verse . heck , it’s literally my main go - to timeline when i draw / write for it . tooru is , quite literally , not very much in this AU without deck .

Something really special on your wishlist: sh ... more ships ... ships to draw and animate and make animatics to ... also i need to get my butt into gear and finish my JRPG AU group lol .

Something you are looking for in short future for your muse: blease tooru help me get thru the school year ... also i have some animatics in the back burner so i’m looking forward to getting those done !

Share something related to your muse!: his canon story , in parallel motion , deals with existentialism and alternate universes . ultimately , it’s a story that serves as a physical manifestation of my own struggle with depression , and while it’s sombre in tone , i want it to tell whoever’s reading it , “ you matter . ” it’s why tooru is placed into so many marginalized groups ; he’s fat and trans and biracial and bi and suffers from bpd + depression + anxiety but he’s a good person through it all ... his story is tragic because he’s not allowed to exist and will be forgotten when he dies , but his existence impacts so many other characters’ lives ... it’s a butterfly effect kind of thing . because you exist , you’ve made so many peoples’ lives better . and i understand it’s rough and i understand depression + sucky real life aspects try to convince you otherwise , but just ... think about it . there’s an alternate universe where , because you don’t exist , something huge was probably impacted . and even on a smaller , more intimate scale --- if you hadn’t existed in another life , then one of your friends might not be here . they might not be as happy as they are now , because you make them happy . life can be awful . but it’s wonderful and beautiful , too . that’s what i want tooru to be to others . someone to look up to and relate to , and someone who tells you , “ it’s okay ! ”

What do you think about character’s design/how do you came up with this: he’s ... kinda generic LOL mainly cause he’s based off of o.ikawa looks - wise due to his origin ... but part of his looks also derivate from an old ask blog muse i had :

i just really like that bangs - over - one - eye hairstyle ngl ... also i have no idea how / when his hair became maroon - brown since o.ikawa’s hair is chestnut brown , but ... yeah . also have no idea when he gained red eyes HDKJSFS,,,, i find fangs appealing on a character though , so that’s why he has fangs and does the :3c ... honestly i think i kinda just slapped together what i like in a design and put it on him , so even though he may look like an NPC ( lol ) , he’s still appealing in my eyes .

Presently I have 3 tumblr accounts I have any possible intention on using: 

my personal ( mainblog: skykinks ) which I use to follow IRL folks, artblogs, and other junk. It’s really messy, though, and I don’t log on as much as I want to. It also sort of acts as the ‘holding’ place for all my inactive sideblogs so I don’t have to feel guilty looking at URLs I’m not active on. Also currently the home of my artblog, which is a sideblog.

main RP account ( mainblog: pirequehideux ) which I use for general RP purposes. Great and all, but all my follows come from one RP blog which is currently in desperate need of an overhaul.

side RP account ( mainblog: marmoriites ) which is a??? RP account I made to house all my anime RP shit ( which is frankly mostly Voltron ), and while I really love the worldbuilding I did there, and am really happy with my muses, I don’t like the fandom and don’t feel like reaching out so... these blogs are getting shoved in the graveyard but I don’t want to abandon all the work? marmoriites started out as a sideblog and shouldn’t be TOO hard to move back to one, that way I can at least keep my #branding and my content easily accessible.

Between the first two accounts, I have-- a SHITTON of sideblogs. ( though I’m putting my full blog list here, just so all my info is in one spot )

pirequehideux - Altered Plot Phantom of the Opera. Needs a bit of a characterization overhaul. Might??? Go quiet for a while as I want to use my version of the story to make an actual graphic novel for publishing, since Leroux’s book is open license and I’ve literally written my own version!

tidehearted - Age of Sail multimuse. Not going anywhere, just needs to be polished & have some muses added.

ferrousstars - Panfandom multi for muses that don’t fit anywhere else, or whose fandoms I avoid getting too deep in. I’ve also been using it to sort of store some RPC type stuff?? Needs muses added, might have more going on- but that’ll be below.

neutralreborn - Tolkien AU Melkor. Needs a bit of a re-vamp for characterization.

forgedinflame - Tolkien Gothmog/Kosomot who might as well be an OC for all the character development I’ve given him, versus his minimal canon appearances, & has a billion AUs that make him accessible in almost any fandom- except Age of Sail because he fucking hates water. Needs to have more information added.

elvesbehavingbadly - Tolkien multimuse Needs completely rebuilt tbh, and needs characters/details added. Huge project tbh.

ofsubtlearts - HP Severus Snape. All HP blogs need a disclaimer/selectivity update. Needs some verses added and some info updated/re-organized.

technicallyaferret - HP Draco Malfoy. All HP blogs need a disclaimer/selectivity update. Needs a SERIOUS overhaul to most info/characterization details, needs tags, etc.

indiscretus - HP multimuse. All HP blogs need a disclaimer/selectivity update. Needs a complete overhaul & move to a fresh blog ( same URL ). full overhaul, basically.

violencetorn - a Kylo Ren blog I foolishly made because I fell in love with those damn movies. He may or may not make his way onto ferrousstars, but I also just want to find a use for the bg I made for this blog. Otherwise this blog is going to the graveyard.

url redacted - super hidden private marvel multi. Needs a HUGE overhaul & major update. might be going less hidden eventually with it??

marmoriites/marmcrites - voltron galra/worldbuilding hub. needs to be scooted to a sideblog & re-organized but probably needs to stay dead.

lionlocked - voltron paladin blog. Has basically no info on it whoops.

skyjynx - an aesthetic/moodboard blog. needs a url change because whoops this is my art username, needs cleaned up and some organizational tags added so I can reblog more general aesthetic pictures in addition to the blog when I don’t have time to make edits.

skyjynxart - my art blog. Needs to actually get running whoops orz

skykinks - miscellaneous??? personal??? 

Things I have been thinking about/wanting to do with my blogs/blogs I’ve been considering running:

fashion blog? - I always find gorgeous outfits/dresses/shoes/accessories/etc and think “I know I’m going to use this!!!” but have no immediate use for it so it sits in my likes for years bc I don’t have anywhere to stow it where it won’t get lost?? So I’ve been contemplating a fashion blog, or perhaps a set of fashion tags on that aesthetic blog, idk, to store stuff like that. Happening regardless of what big choice I make, but whether it’ll be a new set of tags when I revamp the aesthetic blog or a blog unto itself is to be determined.

RPH - I want to have a solid place to collect useful info, writing tips, memes I can’t use immediately but want to in the future, and possibly even answer questions for newbies or something like that. I don’t want to go super serious with a big RPH blog, but it would be nice to have somewhere to dump all my resources so they’re not scattered across blogs.

HOW DO YOU RUN YOUR BLOG + SHIPPING MEME

|| shipping meme will be under the cut as it’ll get really long other wise. I didnt wanna do two posts over a general mod info thing, I guess? alskmd i dont have much for shipping anyway. gomenasorry. ||

Speed: HEY HO. As you can tell. I’m not fast at all. If i find my grove, I readily stay within the one to two week mark, but if my mood dips like it has been for the past month, i fall back behind for about that amount of time as well. Real life is usually a factor in that even with my several blogs now. Generally, if we talk about what’ll happen, or keep in contact on occasion, i’ll pipe those replies first and feel confident about where to take it. Really the fastest to get me replying is making me angry or challenging me to reply back fast and BOY HOWDY YOU’rE ON, LETS JAM. Personally, I reply to things fast if i have an immediate idea/way to write a reply.

Replies: Surprise, part of my sporadic reply time has to do with how I write replies too. I’ll have about three or four open at a time and write a few sentences here and there across them all until i hit that sweet spot where i can just bog the rest down. My trouble is always getting started or far enough with the start of a reply so the rest can flow. I spend too much time thinkig about that stuff and i really shouldnt oops.  I usually try to get the older ones done  inbetween whatever ones I want to reply. It’s a nice balance.

Starters: I prefer plotting than making starter calls here and there, but I’m a fan of long plots so that can be an issue when other people’s muses float away after writing starters and etc.. HOWEVER, this conflicts with the fun i have crafting up scenarios and interactions. That gets funneled into asks a little better i think, where i’m not expectant of replies or anything beyond a like. I’m always excited for going off asks for rps too. scenarios are fun. 

Inbox:  If I reblog memes. I tend to get them done that day or within tthe week. I tend to see them more as break, fun, and times for when i’m not in the mood for writing replies, or the means to get me back into the swing of writing my character.I feel a little bad putting full focus on them oops

Selectivity:  I’m private and selective.I follow/follow back those who I see my character interacting with, or if i know the mods personally, their blogs. I dont have the socialness to being open or being taken advantage of when it comes to art and the like. I’ve have people in the past want to be my friend/ ship with me only for my art.  its really kinda annoying and obvious when this happens.

Wishlist item: Hhhhhhhhhhh. I have a lot. I love being able to slip into Berserker’s Vlad’s madness and the little idiosyncrasies with it, and especially if they’re called out on it or noticed.  It’s a super fun bounce back or even temper to get to play with. but at the same time I’d like him to develop relationships and long standing things but with the way people have gone and left before that can happen is like  awh man.. Understandable, but what can ya do, yanno. 

Honest note: I dunno. I really enjoy FGOVlad and getting to write him so it’s been really fun. I dont really have much to say beyond that.

WHAT’S YOUR OTP FOR YOUR MUSE?: Well my own twitter ousts me for liking St. George and FGO Vlad but I wouldnt call it an otp so much as a simple ship i like. I dont have any ships on vlad here tho.. and any potentials i do like, I wont actually say because I dont want anyone to conform to me for that kinda stuff asndakgh.

WHAT ARE YOU WILLING TO RP WHEN IT COMES TO SHIPPING?: Most things??? However I am not a fan of forced drama between characters.If it is not natural, then I will not do it.

HOW LARGE DOES THE AGE GAP HAVE TO BE TO MAKE IT UNCOMFORTABLE?: Hhhhhhhh. If my muse is old enough to be your character’s parent, that’s too much for me. It dips between  15-20 years. I will never ship with young masters.

ARE YOU SELECTIVE WHEN SHIPPING?: I guess pretty selective? Most of the time I dont see it happening with my muse/ people arent around long enough for him to come to that kinda ‘like’ (weep) beyond well.. vampire hi time to nom u.

HOW FAR DO STEAMY MOMENTS HAVE TO GO BEFORE THEY’RE CONSIDERED NS.FW?:  when the clothes start to come off tbh. shrug emoji.

WHO ARE OTHER MUSES YOU SHIP YOUR MUSE WITH?: i GUESS ATM. ITS’S JUST  Orrie’s @nordiixa Brynhilder and Mellu’s @motherfuckingredsaber Nero but the two are just platonic friends so i dont think that really counts??? Bro’s Vlad would be here too but that’s narcissism and generally frowned on.

DOES ONE HAVE TO ASK TO SHIP WITH YOU?: Preferably once a certain point, but one does not necessarily have to ask me if the pace is right Asking is good because it could mean the difference between someone lose their blood or gets a hug. /shrug.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU LIKE TO SHIP?: Rarely. I enjoy ships as they develop or are plotted out. It’s probably the characters i pick up that are factors of this.

ARE YOU SHIP OBSESSED OR SHIP MORE-OR-LESS?:  wtf is ship more or less. i dont underSTAND. but no im not a big shipper. im sorry to disappoint..........
