just some more episode 6 thoughts

Obviously the Hughie thing is pretty prominent in my mind because uh. comfort character got SA'd but I'm seeing a lot of people here and on twitter think the writers were treating it as a joke? Idk if I agree with that. I think they were trying to make the scenes with it extremely uncomfortable to watch intentionally. The end of the episode at least makes it VERY clear that it (at least in the aftermath) isn't a joke. He's clearly extremely upset about what happened? idk maybe I'm not seeing something other people are seeing.

That being said, it's so gross that people on twitter/instagram ARE treating it as a joke. I think, yeah, it was kind of extreme (a lot more extreme than the other times it's happened in the show, which usually is a cut away and then talking about it afterwards) and the cake thing was just weird, uncomfortable, and unnecessary but idk I really don't think it was meant to be played for laughs for the most part

Unrelated to the above, I fucking loved Neuman this episode. Tbh I've liked Neuman a lot since season 3, she's a fun villain-ish? I'm gonna be honest, maybe I'm missing something somewhere or forgetting something, but isn't her end goal to literally just give supes opportunities to live outside of the entertainment industry? Like yeah she killed a ton of people but I feel like Neuman and The Boys have the exact same goals (killing Homelander/keeping the general public safe from superheroes) and she keeps trying to make an alliance with them??? Hughie she was your bestie for like a year and a half I know you feel betrayed by her but genuinely I don't think she's your biggest problem

Anyway Neuman especially shined this episode. The head exploding thing. Me too girl. Also her and lobotomy!Sage interacting was so funny I wish we could get more of that

Also loved that at the beginning of the episode, literally all of The Boys were there. That's his family and they're there to support him!!!!

ALSO I really like that they separated Frenchie and Kimiko this season a little bit, it's nice to actually see that Kimiko is friends with the others beyond him. Her and Annie both immediately agreeing to go rescue their boy in the mansion...... Hughie Kimiko besties are real and not just in my head for once

Tbh this whole episode showed really good team solidarity between at least Hughie, Kimiko, MM, and Annie. They all showed up to support Hughie while spreading his dad's ashes, Hughie off screen seems to have talked to Kimiko enough to know why she's upset, Hughie IMMEDIATELY coming in with the purell for MM, all 3 of them realizing how much danger Hughie was in and all going in with halothane to go rescue him, Kimiko going off to find A-Train and convincing him to take MM to the hospital, Kimiko, Annie, and Hughie all torturing Tek Knight for information and stealing all of his money and donating it to charity..... like this group was all so in sync with each other this episode it was great

Main negative thought is that honestly I'm confused on where the last 2 episodes are going to go? So far this whole season has just been disconnected B-plots. No major changes or revelations have happened yet (and based on this episode, I'm getting the feeling that Hughie might be tapping out for a bit from the team stuff). The main plotline is mostly about the supe virus and Sage, but that's all been very background stuff and it feels like there isn't going to be a lot of time to unpack everything going on? Especially since there's so many plotlines that haven't been completed yet. I know the thing this season is that the team isn't doing great, hence why they're all wrapped up in separate, personal dramas, but the last episode barely accomplished anything, on both sides.

I'm not complaining per se, I think this is the biggest issue with streaming service shows tbh. It's very obvious that the show wants to complete a bunch of emotional character arcs going into the final season (Hughie confronting his grief/inability to let go, Kimiko and Frenchie confronting their pasts and the guilt that comes with it, Annie struggling to figure out who she is as a person and as a symbol, MM struggling with his mental health and being a good dad, Butcher struggling to not kill literally everyone, ect ect) but there just isn't a whole lot of time to do both character studies, exploring different group dynamics, fulfilling show-long arcs, and keep up with a main plotline when you only have about 8 hours to do all of that and about 15 characters to do all of that with. If the seasons got more episodes, we could deal with a few filler episodes here and there to focus more solely on the characters vs the plot.

Tldr ^^ this season is more character-driven than plot driven, which makes it all kind of feel like filler and idk how the last 2 episodes are going to go

i come bearing another tale from identity v history. this is something that happened while i was taking a break from the game, so i wasn't aware of it until later, but it's still legendary.

uhhh warning for possible spoilers for the promised neverland???? i don't go into plot details or anything bc honestly i haven't read this far yet but it does involve characters who aren't present at the start of the series so yeah.

so identity v announces a crossover with the promised neverland. the crossover is... relatively successful, with some nice skins, fun events both in-game and on social media, and generally it just goes over well. fans of tpn are happy, though some of the choices for who gets what costume were a little baffling (though that may just be me lmao).

later that year, news breaks of a second part to the crossover. it's based on the sorta second part of the manga, with characters introduced later getting skins (while skins from the first part of the crossover also return). the skins are all revealed, and it turns out we're getting skins of the characters sonju, zazie, mujika, and peter ratri.

sonju, zazie, and mujika look... fine!! in fact, i'd say they even look good!! it's clear the designers paid a lot of attention to details and they're honestly among my favourite crossover skins. faithful, pretty, fitting for the original characters' models, basically what a crossover skin should be.

so, what about peter?? surely he, too, got a good, faithful costume, right??

now this was. an unpleasant reveal. why is he making that face?? he looked... goofy. why?? what happened?? how did whoever was doing the art for this manage to make such good art for the rest of these skins for both the first and second parts of the crossover and then drop the ball on a skin for a character who was likely meant to look attractive / pretty??

a lot of people were disappointed, but we hoped he would maybe look better in-game. after all, we've been deceived by art before; hopefully this would be one of those times.

there was never any change to his model as far as i know. they just dropped him and left. idk if they expected us to eat it up anyway, if they were just too ashamed to really ever touch him again, or if they thought he couldn't be fixed so they just abandoned him. dropped him and let us rip him to shreds.

this is the only tpn skin i have never seen in-game. i've encountered every other skin, i even have emma. but i have never seen anyone, not in competitive play, not on streams, not in my own gameplay, use the peter ratri skin. he exists only for us to bully.

but you can only stare up at him, words completely lost. you never rly got to see him so up close like this, in person…

“you make me smile, vox. i feel safe around you so i tend to be myself more. and whenever you leave, i miss being with you. i... would like to know about the prospects of 'us' too,” god, was that too much? your face reddens so you look away, terribly embarrassed and flustered because obviously, this was the one true time you’ve ever relaid your real feelings for this demon

it didn't help the fact this was your first real life meeting with him too

fingers make their way to your jaw that makes you look up, making you stare straight into vox’s glowing yellow eyes

his gaze is gentle and though your heart is still erratic, you don’t panic when he holds you

“there’s no need to be embarrassed, y/n,” he whispers, smiling. “because i feel the same way. if not, more. do you feel this?”

vox reaches for your hand and places it on his chest, so you feel the rapid beating of his heart

“this is your doing. this heart belongs to you now.”

vox lets go of your hand, “but i don’t want to rush you. i’m here to know what your feelings are. i’m not here to pressure an answer.”

you ache for the warmth of his hand again, but you held yourself back for both of your sakes

“i understand,” you nod. “i’ll think this through, okay?”

vox smiles. “alright. i have to go now, i’ll see you soon.”

“and i you, voxie.” you watch him leave the kitchen and when you exit the room yourself, he’s already gone back home.

you return to your bedroom and take a while staring at your pc, before deciding to respond to vox's earlier question

you turn to your door and get up to slowly open it, only to find the stench of light alcohol in the air

you are not surprised when you recognize the long black and red hair and bright yellow eyes behind the door

“hii y/n,” vox giggles, burping lightly afterwards

“you’ve been drinking!” you hiss, opening the door completely only to have vox lurch forward into your body, wrapping his arms around you

“yeah. i did a bit of beer tasting on stream today,” vox says into your hair. “then i wanted to see your pretty face.”

“vox, go home and get some rest…” you try your best to push him off of you but vox only holds you tighter against him, whining

“nooo i wanna be here… i wanted to see you after all. i didn’t come this far just to go back home so soon,” he slurs, rubbing a spot on your back in hopes he might persuade you into letting him stay a little while longer

you were selfish deep inside. you did want him to stay. but now wasn’t a good time. definitely not when he was drunk like this or especially when he has important things to do tomorrow

you pull away but stayed in vox’s hold to take a good look at him

you brush away the hair from his face and caressed his cheek, and this makes vox leans into your touch more

“you know you can’t stay here, vox. you need some rest,” you gently whisper

vox frowns, “just a little longer and then i’ll go…” 🥺🥺

“vox,” your tone is a lot more commanding this time and then the demon sighs, letting go of you

“fine, only because you asked.”

“thank you,” you stand on your toes and press a kiss to vox’s cheek

he freezes upon the touch and he looks at you as though you’ve grown an extra head

“go home, okay?”

“give me one more kiss please,” vox pouts, visibly enticed

“after you’ve sobered up, maybe,” you start pushing vox out of your room, despite his whines and protests

once you get to the door, vox gives you a defeated look to insight some pity. but you don't humor him

“no, voxie. now go home and go to bed,” you giggle, shutting the door.

“i’m counting on that sober kiss, love!” you hear vox announce from the other side and then silence, probably already on his way back home with however his demonic powers worked

You can’t really compare DSMP to a book or a movie, it’s like comparing apples to oranges. DSMP is a roleplay more than a clearly written story. Yeah they plan out stuff before hand, but they’re basically playing a game of D&D without a DM. A coherent plot that makes total sense isn’t going to happen. Even from the start of it, oh, C!Wilbur randomly decides to build a drug van so he can control the server, and then that turns into a nation?? Very clear and coherent but plot with good motives that make for a thrilling story right there. It was a breaking bad and Hamilton roleplay. People watch DSMP because it’s fun more than plot consistency.

Like Dream plays the villain because he didn’t want to stream and take away from other peoples success. Tommy plays The Protagonists because he was the one who streamed the most and decided to take up that role. But both of those characters are morally incorrect. C!Tommy regularly blows up, steals, and otherwise messes with peoples stuff. He also torments people. C!Dream is worse, with the active abuse and manipulation on top of destruction, but neither character is a Good Guy.

I personally think it’s fine how Eryn did his character. He comes in as c!Tommy’s childhood friend, a rowdy kinda dumb teenager, no one tells him what happened, so immediately goes to ‘prank c!Tommy’ and be a ‘dream sympathizer’. Then C!Eryn gives him a not so clear telling of the lore with a few falsehoods/personal bias thrown in. And he’s like ‘hey, maybe c!Dream is actually bad’. Because he was given context.

And MichaelMcChill was also told nothing, except that the people who ‘locked up the Tyrant’ were being rather tyrannical about it. He took a neutral stance more than a pro-Dream one (if you ignore the first stream where he was gooding off more than rping his character). But after being told more what happened he decided ‘prison bad, but c!Dream is also not to be trusted’.

Like say you joined the DSMP right now. Your character was not part of any of the past lore, so your character can’t possibly know about it. You are an outsider. No one knows or trusts you. You go up to a cagey guy who’s probably been betrayed and traumatized and ask “what happened here?” Is it realistic for them to infodump the whole history of the server to you? On the spot?

firstly I don't expect the lore to be movie or book quality at all. my point is it's obvious they can try harder and make it flow together better, but some of them just don't.

I understand none of the characters are strictly good or strictly bad, wilbur even said so himself that they are all morally grey.

with eryns lore, I really don't understand the motives behind the prank thing. he witnessed c tommy having a meltdown even at the mention of dream and still thought it would be funny? I get it his character is meant to be a dumb kid that loves playing pranks and whatever but I just think that was a strange direction to take his character, maybe that's a personal bias though.

with michaels case I actually really like what he's done so far with his character. the conspiracy theorist thing is interesting, trying to figure out stuff for himself. he sees people freaking out about c dream getting out of prison, so he's gonna think oh maybe he really is this bad guy they make him out to be.

and that's the kind of thing I'm okay with and think is relatively interesting. I'm all for the ccs taking their characters whichever direction they want, but it's a little weird to make characters with no motivation to be on the side of the clearly stated main villian on the server.

and with your last point, I understand where you are coming from. but usually the characters ask one person and go. or they don't trust that he's a bad guy even though MASS AMOUNTS of people are freaking the fuck out at the idea of him getting out of prison. would you not infer you should be afraid since they are too? Idk maybe that's just me.

overall, I understand ur points and I really do respect the story as a whole. if I didn't like it at all, I wouldn't be talking about it so much LOL. I just have my story writing gripes with it. thank u for the input!! love talking about this stuff :)

Hi! I'm curious about you figure out characterization, especially since you write a lot of minor characters and/or characters who don't get pov's? I don't quuuite have the time to go back through all the books so I always worry that my characterization is off (not that the Erins do much better sometimes lol)

i wish i was joking this is seriously how i do it.

so one thing is, i tend to write characters who i am interested in, which means i tend to have opinions on who they are. but the warriors wiki is Incredibly detailed my beloved never change! so when i need to go through Literally Every Single Fucking Living Cat Why Are There So Many for mtbnsof, i can do that!

i get a nice little overview of who's got a relationship to them and what notable things they've done! and then i take that and fucking Run.

for a tangible example, i had to figure out who troutstream, rushtail, mossyfoot, and hollowflight Were for medcat dovewing au. and i think...i think troutpaw and rushpaw are in mistystar's omen? they're actually somewhat important bc i think they eat kittypet food or something but! mistystar's omen isn't canon to this au bc i wanted mistystar to be the leader at the beginning so i didn't have to deal with the change in leadership bc it distracted from the story i was telling.

so i have four apprentices and Very Little to go on. i know hollowflight trained in the dark forest, i know that his apprenticeship is really weirdly timed. well that's interesting. so i made him, i had him fail his warrior assessment the first time, and then. well that's a spoiler but i gave him another lil catalyst.

it's funny bc i decided he was the Oldest apprentice bc y'know the oots riverclan apprentices are just Shafted but i didn't really care about who he was at the time, and i liked the other three names better.

and for the other three...well, i decided troutstream was a good swimmer becuase -stream, and then i just. made the characters i needed to pad out the story.

so troutpaw was gonna b kind of impulsive very energetic and bouncy and friendly and a little overwhelming. but also very good at being a warrior.

i needed her to have someone to compete with, and i decided to give her rushpaw. i think there was a reason for this. maybe mistystar's omen? idk it's been a while. but so that meant rushpaw had to be also very athletic and good, as well as very good at getting under troutpaw's skin, but he also had to balance her out. he had to be calmer and a little more patient.

with those two nailed down, mossypaw would naturally gravitate to being dovepaw's friend, so i made her the cat who would make a good friend for dovepaw. admittedly all four of them are close, but well. you'll see.

anyway, mossypaw became...just kind of okay! not in a bad way, mind. she's a fun character. i love her.

but okay, none of those four have to be pov, so what do i do for that?

i mean the thing is these characters tend to be minor/background but central in a work i care about (whitestorm, thrushpelt, oakheart), or just not very background (blossomfall), so i think deadfoot is probably my best place to go since he doesn't have a ton of character in tallstar's revenge.

i Could Say i focused on who he was in that and the fact that he chose his son as a questing cat...but i'll be honest, it was blind confidence. this definitely ties back to the "who i need a character to be" but we also have a sense of deadfoot from a few appearances. we think of him as pretty stern, pretty serious, but we know as a kit he was excitable. all of this is pretty vague, the kind of stuff i get from skimming a wiki page.

e.g., what i did for spottedleaf, since i didn't really have a Sense of her. firepaw is super biased so i wanted to know who She Was, and i got that from her wiki page. same principle.

anyway, from there, well, i actively wrote his backstory (it's mere assignment), but if i just wanted to jump into ibtwicm, i would have probably written out a vague outline of his past. maybe not even have committed it to paper, but i would have had an Idea of it.

in some sense, i think part of writing background characters is accepting that they have little characterization, so you have to take something and run, or just make them whoever you want. i do a combo of them, and then once i know who they are, i stick to it. at least for the length of a fic, but usually, i try to stay consistent unless i'm trying to explore a new angle.

like unless i have good reason to, it's mere assignment is my formal and official deadfoot backstory. any deadfoot fic that's canon compliant going forward will be ima compliant unless i have Really Good Reason to.

and at some level...i think about? why do i like this character? what part of them is appealing?

i like deadfoot because he's just. there. the way he is. it's almost never mentioned. but i don't think. and i didn't know this as a kid but i did see cinderpaw and snowkit so i knew it couldn't be. it didn't seem Normal. and now having read tsr, they had a warrior retire early due to an injury like cinderpelt's.

(yeah fuck off erin stop covering your ass doing it twice doesn't fix it.)

anyway i liked that about him, so i sort of...he has two littermates, i killed 'em both. he...his relationship to rabbitkit is literally 0% developed but in my head i gave him the Tiniest reason to care about him more than the others. so he cares at least a Lil more. anyway anyway he also. i didn't want him to be super expressive i wanted him to clash with tallstar.

basically ig. i don't really care. which i know isn't Very helpful but when i'm writing a background character i can do whatever i want imo. and i do like i lean on the warriors wiki a lot.

i think one thing is! i just kind of lean a lot on who was born at the same time as who, that kind of thing, to build relationships. and uh i have made a lot of groups of ocs so i have an idea of the kind of dynamics i like to write. and that helps me when i'm building out background casts.
