Shout out to my fiddle/violin teacher for teaching me Shipping Up to Boston, because, as a result, most of what I hear when listening to No Happy Ending is “bosenberry strawberry strawberry, bosenberry strawberry pie, bosenberry strawberry strawberry, strawberry strawberry strawberry pie”
#the mechanisms#ouatis#no happy ending#i dont know if this is gonna make sense to anyone else#i assume that this is a normal method for teaching fiddle but i have no way of knowing#the thing is. at the end the fiddle stops but you can keep hearing it in the accordion because its just the length of the notes#and the bowing of the fiddle A determines the length of the notes but B is very parallel in sound at least to the accordion#idk if any of that made sense idk shit about the accordion#and i used the term ‘fiddle’ throughout here because a fiddle is typically a violin. but afaiaa nastya played a viola.#now the black one they had that didnt have a hollow body (and thus i think is electric. but again idk shit) has five strings which means-#its *both* a viola and violin. usually these combo instruments have a viola body because the lowest string needs the larger body to sound-#good basically. and the highest string can resonate well in the larger body. whereas as the sound of the highest string is great in the-#small body of the violin but the lowest one gets fucked up. however since that instrument doesnt have a hollow body i have no idea how that-#affects it. my assumption would be that even in this form the viola size is more common. since it is in the typical form. and that since-#viola is what nastya played anyway thats what they would have wanted#all of that is to say that i dont know which instrument they were using for performances or the recording of ouatis. but either way.-#fiddles are typically violins and it my understanding that nastya played a viola. therefore i just said fiddle instead of violin or viola-#wow! over explaining my beloved /j#gonna just state again that idk SHIT about the accordion and thats what i think im hearing but i could be wrong

i’ve been aching to commentate spirit phone’s commentary for ages. glad i finally got around to it, this was an ejoyable experience. liveblog below the cut
-i'm like half certain i've heard this commentary before. maybe not the whole way through & it was probably actual years ago
-nice hearing stuff like this. in-depth personal view of the album-making process. makes it seem like more of a real thing i could do myself someday
-neil cicierega real person momence
-i could probably go real in depth about neil cicierega/tally hall parallels specifically concerning like. the arc of their musical careers. but i won't, here
-wild how i legitimately don't care much about micheal jackson
-didnt we get a bunch of spirit phone stems from the needlejuice release/his patreon? we could probably hear the funny track he speaks of here in that
-i love hearing musical artists, especially neil cicierega, talking about the meanings of their songs. like, not only has this song been claimed to hell & back by the tumblr gays, but with later ones i just can't see where he gets these ideas from. also, claiming there's any one meaning or plot to a song just seems silly to me
-shoutout to neil reusing a midi from like, 1998, that he made at 12 years old, whose entire melody was reused for the main verses of everybody loves raymond. loved finding that out on my own 2 years ago. now it's common trivia in this fandom. not bad times
-it'd be neat if neil did individual trans tracks here like he did with view monstel, those things are half of why i consider it my favorite album
-it's a lot easier to ignore the creator's intended meaning behind a song when he can't even remember it. thanks neil
-seesaw effect
-and there's my joke all but 1 of my followers wont get. moving on
-what kinds of movie theater lobbies has neil been to where there are arcade machines. i mean im not one to talk but that does sound rather strange
-why do songs' titles even need to be taken from the lyrics. ive never seen that as any sort of requisite. it's like titling any form of prose you can just give it whatever name ya like
-"this part sounds pretty cool right"
-is neil's vocal range only mildly better than mine? with training i could change that
-oh i haven't processed any of the last 25 seconds hold on
-god. a shit ton of vocal modification in this song. it's like neil returned to his roots but with quality this time
-i, as an ace/aro, have never related more to an allohet guy in my life. what is the point of eyes!
-professional humming/whistling takes skill. it's different from the recreational or casual stuff. i'd know
-there's a name for the way sound (especially music) gets distorted when moving past you and i can't remember it but it's probably what neil's referring to here in the way he recorded the intro
(- update: it's the doppler effect no need to tell me cas already did)
-as someone who hasnt seen the rugrats or take me there by blackstreet i'll just say it sounded like a bouncy music box melody. nice to hear a song that messes with the typical scales though. lydian & diatonic.
-that's a rather specific thing to be glad about, but given what he talked about in his last full audio commentary about the jew harp i suppose i'm not surprised
-i know that tmbg song now. listened to it & saw the music video too. yep they're different alright
-where the hell does neil get all these instrumence from anyway
-huh. hadnt heard this part of the commentary before making my oc concerning this song but i like to hear neil's approval concerning part of my interpretation
-i love how ive heard a billion different tellings of this mellified man story from lem dem fans talking about this song and neil's is by far the wildest
-good god that does only make it worse neil
-i love making liveblogs of lemon demon albums. with the fullerenes or tally hall i cant name a specific dude to take out my woes on generally but with lemon demon i can just say neil all the time. i like being on a casual first name basis with this dude ive never interacted with once ever
-is sweet bod the one other than cabinet man with a demo in the bonus tracks? i forget
-holy shit the boston molasses disaster someone call up soapy if it doesnt already know, it'd love this
-two thousand nine. god i miss the fiddle solo. the ver with it is truly the best one
-he pronounces it jeff? i've always read it as gef with a hard g. that's what i get for knowing words that are never spoken aloud
-that's a fun meta interpretation of this ghost story that's over a century old. i like that
-i've noticed neil generally does the same synths across a whole album. it's especially more clear in the earlier ones, and does mean i occasionally mix up songs between clown circus & live from the haunted candle shop
-ah! ancient aliens! my least favorite track on this album. i cant even claim to have the least interest in a popular one i've just generally not liked this one much from the beginning. so im curious to see what neil's got to say, i think ive been in ~new commentary zone for a while now
-anyway. newest update on the loolin not realizing a song's funky time signature front: i think this one's in 6/4. or at least switches a lot between time signatures. granted i dont listen to it very often for the reasons stated above
-see the way neil describes it. eldritch horror upon being visited by the unknown at a time when humanity'd hadn't even yet had a chance to imagine such a thing occurring. should be right up my alley. but the sound itself & many of the lyrics simply turn me away.
-must i specify i don't dislike it? spirit phone is neil's best album it not being my favorite doesn't mean i think it's bad yadda yadda nobody should be surprised by this it's not like anyone in these fandoms reads my liveblogs <3
-granted i think this is. the first bit of spirit phone content i've made on my blog ever. so who knows things can change <3
-the transitions in spirit phone are much less view-monster transition tracks & more extended outros. view-monster's were a bit more intro than outro sure but they also seemed directed upon making a 2-way rather than 1-way bridge between tracks. or something like that
-.............soft fuzzy man is an incredible nickname for a cat. i'd steal that if i werent afraid of introducing my relatives to lemon demon
-jirls
-an underlying metaphor is good enough. the literal side of the lyrics are fun. nothing but agreement here neil my good man
-the transition into as your father i expressly forbid it from soft fuzzy man is the best one in this album
-buddy you ask if a musical idea has been used before odds are the answer is yes in this day & age the question is has it been used in the way you're using it. like sure this soul jazz record from the 60s that was sold out in kansas stores for a week used this bassline that youve found yourself copying. but seeing as youre using it in some angsty garage rock ballad type tune does anybody actually care
-doesn't everybody like to say things in an unhinged manner from time to time
-imagine having a guitar dad, i say, with my dad being a folk accordion/fiddle dad, which is infinitely worse in every way
-i think he was in an actual folk band at some point. idk the 90s were weird
-iron my life?
-m-more intimate? there are a lot of ways i'd describe this song but intimate isn't one of them. granted as your father is negatively intimate so from there i guess you've got nowhere to go but up
-...still glad to see his interpretation kinda supports my oc at least
-the way he says characters in songs shouldn't worry about death really strongly makes me think this is some sort of. thematic continuation of stuck from dinosaurchestra, even if there's no real death in there. interesting. would also mean that the dad from these past 2 songs is named carlos betty (no last name)
-i literally never assumed this was a flute solo. piccolo at best. it's pretty clearly a recorder
-my mom plays the recorder. i wonder if she can play recorder better than neil cicierega
-we can throw a party in honor of the crushing weight of responsibility! i simply won't be the one throwing it because i have enough on my plate already <3
-what the hell does "a sense of intent" mean
-i've never heard rush before however i disagree with neil's understanding of 6/4. 6/4 is meant to have emphasis (onbeat or another term i can't remember) on the 1st & 4th beat of every measure, which is greatly different from a measure of 4/4 then a measure of 2/4. it's why his 5/4 always sounds weird, because while it's recognizable in sequences of 10/4, it's more 2 measures of 4/4 with one of 2/4 tacked on the end. that's also how it's different from 3/4. i don't know much music theory but what i do understand i will fight to the death about
-"canonized" that's. a very interesting term to use when referring to a former president
-from now on i will interpret every love song directed at some unseen "you" to be inviting me to marry them for tax purposes. thanks neil for being an aromantic icon
-ah hell yes hell yes man-made object is my favorite goddam song on this album
-short & sweet & good damn vibes. neil's thoughts on it all are only making it better
-wild how he uses very few vocal effects for a song that he clearly is straining his vocal range for. go off neil
-the qualifier of man-made is a wonderful thing. oldest or biggest thing? oldest or biggest man-made thing? what a incredibly important specification. a world of possibilities lie between the two. oh i love it
-just gets me thinking yknow! what we consider weird/impressive in another species, in our own species- what kind of equivalent to that would there be from an outsider looking in? are there alien versions of the significances we place upon things, that we could never imagine? the limits of the human imagination mean we could never conceive of something else in the world that isn't, in some way great or small, just like us- and are we wrong for thinking that? such a juicy topic i wish there were a name for it because it's kinda hard to explain concisely
-spiral of ants. my second favorite song from this album, in fact. a good one to experience
-the vocals are just another instrument. they really truly are. i wasn't going into this commentary expecting to feel solidarity for neil cicierega in this chili's tonight on more than one occasion but here i am.
-like, his whole stance on interpreting songs is something i agree with almost entirely. you can take it at face value, you can dig to their very depths, you can listen to songs without caring what the lyrics mean whatsoever, and those are all fun. & yeah while any of these people can be annoying as one of the types who enjoys gliding on the surface more than anything i find those who dedicate themselves to figuring out the whole meaning of a song over anything else to be both slightly scary & slightly annoying <3 keep up the good work
-i want to make songs for my siblings the way neil makes songs for his sibling(s)
-spinch
-neil really shouldn't be allowed to be this funny like this whole album youre thinking golly! he's just a normal man this neil cicierega! and then he starts listing the cat hacks jokes & you remember he's had ridiculously consistent viral success with all his humorous endeavors and holy shit it's neil cicierega in action talking about his music. god bless you neil
-you're welcome, no problem, my pleasure. good eveternoon, radio audience!

Okay, so this might seem REALLY, REALLY weird, but do you have any, like headcanons for Ritos? Like, not just Revali, but Ritos. Flying mechanics. Their opinions on Medoh. Do you think they lay eggs? Or what? Because that's something I've been debating for a looooong time
Oooooo you bet I have Rito Headcanons. Prepare yourselves, mortals! Here are
General Rito Headcanons:
The Rito can fucking fly, I don’t care what BS the game says about updrafts and gliding. They are birds, they have wings and feathers, we have seen characters like Teba and Kass fly around and gain altitude and stuff. The updrafts help them, but they can fly on their own. They don’t glide, they can fly, end of story, I don’t take criticism, I’ll die on this hill.
To add to that, I think that they can’t gain height very quickly. They either need a long runway or stretch of land (kinda like a plane) to achieve height at an angle over time. Or, they start at an already elevated position (like the landings in Rito village) and gain height that way.
So the reason Revali’s Gale is so useful, is because he can get super high up, very quickly, at anytime. It’s not dependent on his surroundings and such
And it’s also useful because it give him more airtime to shoot his bow and stuff
Rito Stable has a lot of lumber lying around, and there’s a bunch of axes and piles of wood there from the forest. I like to think that the Rito trade with them for supplies, considering all their equipment, weaponry, and houses are made of wood. (given that metal stuff is too heavy for flight and all)
That said, they don’t take more than they need. Their culture alone is very minimalist, (given that they’re sort of based off of South American mountain tribes like the Incans) so they’re the type of people who don’t throw anything away. Ergo, they don’t trade that often, only when they need to.
I hc that a lot of the careers and jobs they take up are more artsy based. Rather than scholars, or nobles, or farmers, they have a lot of artisans. Such as weavers, carpenters, musicians, cartographers (they can fly!) and what not.
I think Amali is an architect, idk why. I just want someone to be an architect because Rito houses are so cool! Also Saki is a doctor and she and Teba met on a classic “warrior being healed” trope because I love them. And you know Teba’s a dumbass and gets himself hurt 24/7, especially when he was younger. (I mean, need I remind you he wanted to fight Medoh ALONE like what the shit man)
Also this is why Saki’s wary of Tulin being a warrior because what if he inherits Teba’s recklessness, you can’t worry your mom like that kid
Rito come from eggs. I also was struggling with this, because they’re aren’t any nests or anything…but I believe they’re birds first and foremost
Obviously I won’t go into details because this is a sfw blog, and I’m ace and have no idea how those things work, BUT they only have eggs when they want to. Having kids/eggs is a planned thing if that makes sense lmao. It’s not like chickens where they lay eggs constantly.
Opinions on Medoh: Welp, they’re not ones to immediately be on board with Sheikah technology. The Rito aren’t as ethnocentric as the Zora, but they kinda have their own air of “we don’t really need Sheikah/Hylian stuff butting into our lives.”
Also, their community is very tight knit, and they aren’t keen on the fact that the thing shot lasers at their family and friends.
However, whenever someone trusted (like Link or Teba, who basically saved their village) tells them that Medoh’s all good now, they’ll probably loosen up a bit.
OK! Last thing for this super dense post (sorry) but you know how during quarantine right now, people in Italy are just playing music out their balconies? Just to vibe with their neighbors?
So that, but for Rito music, not just Kass. People just sing out their windows, or strum their instruments over their balconies. There’s this silent agreement between them all, like “Yeah, we’re listening. Keep playing.”
(Also no one asked, but I think Kass’ Sheikah teacher [I call them Zimiri] specialized in the lute, although he was skilled in several instruments. He came to Rito village after the Calamity because he heard that the Rito are the best singers in Hyrule, and he wanted Link to hear his songs from someone with the best voice. Zimiri taught Kass the accordion because Kass was a natural at it, and he choose the instrument on purpose because it was the most lively and could be heard from far away. When Kass was little he would play his music in the heart shaped hole near the top of Rito Village for everyone to hear and be happy)
Ok I’m done blabbering bye. And by the way, this wasn’t weird at all anon! Thanks for the ask!

Questions Tag
Ahh thanks so much for tagging me @galacticlust ! I’m so excited! My first tagging!
Rules: answer the questions, then ask 11 of your own.
1. What is your favourite place in the world? Why? Ummm wow tricky… of the places I’ve been (I have places I want to go to, but I don’t believe personally answering with some vague romanticized archetype of a place. It strikes me as false and foolish) I really loved Vienna because it had everything I could want/need including Opera!!!, culture, history, bustle, beauty, and a thriving Jewish community (despite antisemitism, but that’s everywhere). I also have some fond memories of Chicago, which also has most of the above (though it is newer, feels more rushed)
2. If time travel was possible, would you go to your past or future? Ummm…neither. Idk, there are moments of the past I’d like to return to, to get a clearer sense of stuff or because I was truly happy in that moment, but by and large, I’m not sentimental. I’ve done that. And some of it I never want to go through again, especially because it won’t leave me now. The future? While I always dream/plan for the future, even unconsciously, I don’t want to go and find out my life doesn’t match my expectations/plans. That’ll happen soon enough. Really, I’d like to disappear into my fantasies for a day (or more) or to be able to be grounded and content in the present.
3. What is your favorite song and why? I have too too many… I guess I’ll say “you want it darker” by Leonard cohen. I always love his poetry, and this speaks to me especially with the allusions to Jewish tradition/ quoting of texts. I also love the singing of “hineni” by the cantor.
4. What do you want to do for a living? Be an Opera singer! Also cantor for a synagogue and/or teach a small studio. If something goes awry and I’m unable to sing for my supper, I guess I’d be content as a historian or museum curator or a translator.
5. if you could give some advice to your younger self, what would you say? I’m still getting advice from people, and much if it I’ve heard before. Guess I’m a slow learner XD. I guess be patient, with yourself and others, and try not to be too dogmatic. 6. what fictional character do you most identify with? Why? Asher Lev, because of his conflict between art/personal expression/sensitivity and his culture/community/familial expectations. Also Melisande, because of her timidity and farouche nature, and her expression of her fears/trauma , impulsivity, and moments of childlike abandon and joy.
7. share an unpopular opinion that you may have. I feel like some people, even people I generally agree with and care about, sometimes can be a little too vehement when expressing themselves. I’m guilty of this too. I believe there’s certain shit that one doesn’t fuck around with (genocide, holocaust, sexual assault, cruelty, etc) but I also think that sometimes we jump down people’s throats when they’ve made a statement out of ignorance and inexperience or express themselves poorly. Maybe I’m naive idk but I feel like sometimes discourse is exhausting and should be more civil…
8. What is your hogwarts and ilvermorny house? Hogwarts: probably slytherin, even tho I hate the blood purity bs, though I could also be ravenclaw. Ilvermorny: horned serpent?. Also my patronus is a thestral <3.
9. Do you play any instrument? If you could wake up and play any instrument, what would you choose? I play piano, clarinet, and button accordion. I used to play saxophone as well (poorly). Also the voice is an instrument. If I could play any instrument, I’d choose cello (or to be amazing at singing and at Curtis) 10. What was your childhood dream? To be a writer. Or an actress or dancer lol. 11. And again, How did you get into personality typing, and why do you like it? Someone mentioned mbti, and had me take the 16 personalities thing. I thought it was interesting, but wanted to learn more, esp as the results for me were inconsistent/ was torn between types. I like learning about myself and other people’s thoughts and being, and I like systems/categorizing information lol. I can be really pedantic there.
Sorry this got so long guys, thanks for hanging in!
My questions:
1. What book(s) really speak to yourself and experiences?
2.How many languages do you speak ?
3. What archetype do you associate yourself with?
4. Do you like classical music? Opera? Musical theatre?
5. Favorite poet?
6. Opinion on birds? Cats?
7. Do you like spicy things?
8. Favourite smell?
9. Do you want children?
10. What makes you feel safe or at least protected? What are you protective of?
11. Fatal flaw? Biggest fear?
I tag @chirikli @nerdyqueerandjewish @swordsoprano @ariminak @epazzanonbadate and @rareandradiant-maiden

A16, 24, B13, 14, C1, D1, F11, G1, J1, and L9!! for sierra :3c
ty!!!! gonna put this under a readmore bc its long as hell but its good shit
A16: Does your OC have to go through their own trials to learn a lesson, or do they listen and learn from observation and lecture? I.e., does your OC listen when someone tries to tell them the importance of budgeting, or do they have to go experience what happens if you don’t budget first?she deffo has to learn herself lmao. theres a select group of people she’d listen to but 90% of the time she’s stubborn and would have to learn the hard way lmao
A24: What are some of your OC’s biggest personal obstacles? This could be emotional, physical, social… Are they aware of it? Are they trying to overcome it?hmmm probably social? she’s very competent socially and makes friends easily but struggles actually trusting people and would rather do stuff herself first off. its a combination of that and the fact that she tends to isolate herself when things go wrong or get bad even in a situation where having people to help would make things way easier.
B13: Do they have a large or small group of friends?large! she considers her whole crew her friends
B14: Do they have people they are genuinely honest with about themselves?its a pretty small group, because of the previously mentioned trust issues. she’s mostly honest with people typically, she doesn’t often lie about herself, but there’s only a few that she’s totally genuinly honest with
C1: Does your OC have a moral code? If not, how do they base their actions? If so, where does it come from, and how seriously do they take it?she has a rough moral code yeah. she avoids killing innocents whenever possible and overall her pirate group tries to target the rich and powerful, not the poor, and make sure the people they steal from deserve it and can handle it lmao. she’s not above killing, stealing etc but doesn’t do it senselessly. she takes it pretty seriously and her crew has a reputation for following these guidelines.
D1: How religious is your OC? What do they practice, if anything? If they don’t associate with any religion, what do they think of religion in general?hmmm i actually haven’t thought much about religion lmao. she definitely wasn’t raised religious and probably doesn’t practice it. she doesn’t typically think about the world in such a large sense, so she’s doesn’t really feel strongly one way or another. she’s probably kinda nuetral towards it? this is subject to change tho bc now im curious and might spend some time figuring this out lmao
F11: What are some of their favorite things to do for recreation? How did they get into it? What part of it do they like the most?music! she loooves music and if she’s not steering the ship she’s probably chilling on deck playing her guitar or the lute. she was raised with music because her mother was an entertainer and taught her and her brother to play the accordion, lute, sing, and various percussion instruments so she has a personal connection to it as well. she just loves the feeling she gets while playing? especially how some songs take her back to her memories with her family before things kinda went to shit
she also obvs loves sailing and the ocean in general as well. she loves to sail and explore and just be on the water and feel free. she feels reallly relaxed when she swims. she’s liked swimming since she was young and raised in a harbor town, but really got into it when her troupe traveled by boat for a while, and she took the opportunity to learn what she could and absolutely loooved it.
G1: Is your OC close to their family?yes! to parts at least. she was very close to her mother and brother when she was young. she still feels very close to her mother, but they haven’t seen each other for a while since they’re both in hiding from their father (who she is not close with and realllly hates lmao). her family was v important to her when she was young tho, and she has kind of a found family now but still likes her original fam
J1: Where does your OC stand most politically? What would they align with most?she kinda hates nobles and people like that and in general the rich who think they’re better than the working class because she was raised on the streets. so idk an exact way to describe it but basically she supports the working class and hates asshole nobles lmao
L9: How did you come up with your OC?i just. fuckin love pirates man and i love bards so like. pirate bard lets fuckin do it and now i love her a Lot (which is partially bc we made her and mimi friends so it was fun to use her all the time and ??? i lvoe them)
thank you!!!! hell yeah hell yeah
