Corroded Coffin Fest - Day 3 - Best Friends

Summary: Corroded Coffin...a group of good-looking young guys. But jealousy is not a good look on any of them.

Friendship dynamics in groups were always tricky things.

You'd know more about one person in the group than the others, someone might know more about you than you know about them. More often than not, the bonds of friendship were more braided and intricate than a straight connection from Person A to Person B.

This concept had led to many-a-fight between Mike, Lucas, Dustin, and Will. Petty, puberty-driven, anxiety-riddled fights that Eddie stupidly tried to mediate one afternoon when he got to the lunch table and found them all bickering.

The other, older boys groaned when their leader asked with a snort, "alright, who's fighting over the Skeletor action figure this time?"

Their arguing only got louder, all of them turned to face Eddie now, who realized his mistake as they spoke over one another and shoved elbows into each others sides.

He remedied it by whistling loudly to get them all to shut up.

"One at a time," he demanded, and then waved to Dustin, who sat the closest to him.

And Dustin, desperate for some sort of epiphany or intervention, asked,

"Eddie, who is your best friend?"

"Oh, that's easy," he waved dismissively. "It's Jeff."

It was a record-scratch moment.

Maybe not for everyone at the table, but certainly for the other members of Corroded Coffin.

"What about Ronnie?" Jeff himself questioned.

"Yeah what about Ronnie?"

"Weren't you guys in Kindergarten together?"

"Jeff can't be your best friend, because he's my best friend."

Everyone froze then and turned to Gareth, who shrunk under everyone's stares for a moment and then straightened his shoulders.

"Yeah," he nodded. "Jeff's my best friend, what about it?"

"When do you guys hang out except for Hellfire...or class...or band practice?" Eddie narrowed his eyes at Gareth.

"When do you guys hang out except for those places?" Dave retorted. "If anything, Jeff's my best friend because I've actually been to his house to listen to tapes before."

And from there it just devolved, as all of the boys at the table began to argue about who was whose best friend.

Everyone but Jeff.

Eddie was the first to notice him, sitting there taking immense interest in his lunch. Cutting his meatloaf into the tiniest bites.

"Alright!" he snapped, earning the table's. "Let's hear it from the man of the hour. Jeff, since you seem to be winning the popularity contest and have everyone up in arms about being the Ethel to your Lucy...who is your best friend?"

The thing was...if Eddie was the face of Corroded Coffin--of Hellfire Club--Jeff was the heart. And he knew it. He'd easily slid into the space that Ronnie had left vacant when she graduated, offering guidance and kindness and help to all of his friends.

He enjoyed a laugh, enjoyed being surrounded by everyone, enjoyed getting to see them all smile. Their happiness was his, and they all held a special place in his heart and in his life.

So it shouldn't have been a surprise to him that they all held him in such a high regard as well.

He didn't know how to soften the blow when the answer to this heavy, weighted question was "Richie Stafford."

It was said clearly and confidently, no hesitation whatsoever.

Cue another record scratch for all the boys at the table.

"Wait...Isn't..." Dave's face scrunched for a moment. "Isn't that your cousin?"

"Yeah," Jeff nodded. "It is."

"Wasn't he on the football team?"

"Yeah, but he isn't a bad guy." He shrugged and gestured to Eddie. "He graduated last year. That's why I was surprised you didn't say Ronnie. Because my answer is Richie."

Jeff watched his friends deflate for a second before he continued.

"You guys are all my pals. And I wouldn't give any of you up for the world. But Richie was my first friend, my best friend. I don't know if you remember Ed, but I was just as scared as these guy were to come up and talk to you on my first week of high school. A metal band? At Hawkins High? I thought you guys were the coolest!

"But I wouldn't even be in Corroded Coffin or Hellfire if Richie give me the push to try. I sat with him and his friends at lunch that first week, and he could tell how uncomfortable I was...but...I dunno, you got up on the table one day and played air guitar or something. Got detention, I'm sure. But Richie said it was like the clouds parted, so the next Monday, he sent me over to sit with you guys.

"He always said I was a nerd, but he never gave me shit for being myself," Jeff finished confidently. "So that's why he's my best friend."

Hellfire Club's table was silent for a moment, somber at the news that their favorite person favored someone else.

Eddie, ever the leader, was the first one to speak up.

"Well, thanks for being honest with us all Jeff. You stuck with your guns, and I think it's pretty metal of you, actually."

He and Jeff shared a smile with one another, Jeff happy that his friend and role model wasn't upset with him.

They whole table erupted into chatter, their voices filled with friendship this time, instead of anger or annoyance. They all picked on Jeff, telling him not to let the popularity get to his head.

"I will say," Gareth piped up over the din, "I feel better that at least you picked Richie...and not any of these turds."

The whole table broke down in laughter, and Gareth earned a soft punch to the shoulder from his best friend.

Idk if you’re taking prompts but if you’re up to it I have a request :) TK and Carlos have a bad fight one morning and they go to work mad at each other and throughout the day they realize it was a stupid fight but they’re both trying to give the other some space. Carlos gets caught up working till late at night and when he gets home TK is asleep on the couch waiting. they make up and it’s very soft and it involves lots of fluff. I just realized this is really specific lol sorry

Stumbling a Step

A fight with Carlos leaves TK in a foul mood. Judd sets him straight.

30 days of Tarlos - Day 12

The drive to work is quiet, out of the corner of his eye he sees Carlos grip the steering wheel a little harder as the car comes to a stop in front of the firehouse.

“I have a long shift today,” he says, his tone stiff. “I won’t be home until after midnight.”

TK looks over at his boyfriend; it’s the first thing Carlos has said since their shout out the night before.

They’d gone to bed in absolute silence; for the first time since they got together, they didn’t sleep wrapped in each other’s arms. Instead, they had slept with their backs facing the other. It has to be the worst sleep TK has had in the year since dating Carlos.

“I think I’m going to go to my dad’s tonight,” he tells him, watching as Carlos’ jaw clenches in return.

“If that’s what you want,” is all Carlos says, not meeting his eyes as he stares forward at his windshield.

TK opens his mouth only to close it again. He doesn’t know what he wants to say, the silence between them makes him feel antsy and awkward. Finally, with a frustrated sigh, he reaches for the door of the car, they’re not getting anywhere like this, and he has a shift to start.

“I’ll see you later,” he mumbles as he steps out of the car. He’s about to shut the door when Carlos’ soft ‘be safe’ reaches his ears, making his stomach twist. He watches Carlos pull away with a frown on his face and a dull ache under his ribcage.

Letting out another sigh, he looks up at the firehouse, feeling his mood sour by the second.

Today is going to be an absolute shit day.

 Unfortunately, his prediction proves to be 100% correct; his day has gone to hell in a handbasket.

With every call they get, his temper gets more and more stretched thin. Everyone on the team keeps giving him looks as his mood settles over the rest of them like a dark cloud.

They come back from their fourth call of the day, a small house fire they easily control. It shouldn’t have been a problem except for the way he keeps barking at everyone. Mateo takes the worst of it when the poor kid asks him if he’s okay. He snaps at him that he should mind his own business, startling the other guy back. Since then, no one utters a word on the ride back to the firehouse.

He jumps out of the truck before it’s completely come to a stop, his father sends him a look, but he ignores it as he heads up the stairs. If he wants to reprimand him, he’s going to have to do it as his Captain and not his father. For now, all he wants is to be alone before he says something else to one of his friends he can’t take back.

He hides in the dorm room alone; his mood is so foul even Buttercup takes one look at him and turns tail. Checking his phone, he tries to ignore the way his heart aches at the lack of texts from Carlos. It’s been seven hours since Carlos dropped him off and not a single message, it’s something he’s not used to.

He braces himself when he hears footsteps getting closer until they’re inside the dorms with him. He hears a throat clear and knows instantly who’s decided to brave his temper.

“Look, I don’t know what crawled up your ass and died today,” Judd starts, standing next to his bed, his expression is as no-nonsense as his words as he stares him down. “But your mood is putting everyone on edge. You almost made Mateo cry when you yelled at him, which pissed Marjan off. Paul is trying to cheer up Mateo and calm down Marjan with food.”

TK looks up at him silently, feeling more miserable than before, guilt mixing with the frustration he’s been feeling all day. He doesn’t know what his expression is telling Judd, but he hears the older man let out a sigh.

He watches as Judd rolls his shoulders once awkwardly before sitting down on the bed next to him.

“The captain isn’t too happy with you right now either,” Judd continues, his expression softening from annoyance to worry. “But I told him I would talk to you instead, might make it easier. So, you want to tell me what’s going on?”

TK debates staying quiet for a moment, to let all the negative feelings inside fester until they make his stomach ache.

“Come on, brother,” Judd urges him softly. “Talk to me; this isn’t like you.”

TK feels his eyes sting at the concern he hears in Judd’s voice, even though he’s been a horror all day.

“Carlos and I got into a fight last night,” he starts, licking at his dry lips, saying the words out loud makes his heart twist. Judd gives him a surprised look that makes TK chuckle humorlessly. His friend’s surprise is understandable; he and Carlos never fight. Everyone that knows them likes to make fun of how sweet they are on each other.

“What was the fight about?” Judd asks curiously, as TK tenses.

“He –,” TK starts only to stop, he exhales, shaking his head. Taking another breath, he starts to talk. He tells Judd about the romantic dinner Carlos had ready when he arrived at his place, everything wonderful as always until he asked him one simple question.

Judd looks at him long and hard, the disbelieving look on his face putting him on the defensive.

“What?” he asks sharply.

Judd raises an eyebrow at him. “I’m just trying to understand how Carlos asking you to move in with him started a fight.”

“Look, he just – “ he stumbles.

“I mean you’re already living with him,” Judd talks over him. “This is just making it official.”

TK feels his heart jump at Judd’s words; he tries to ignore how close they are to what he’s been thinking all day. “I’m not already living with him,” he argues, annoyed when Judd rolls his eyes in response.

“When was the last time you didn’t sleep at his place if you weren’t here?” Judd questions, not waiting for an answer before he’s asking another. “Or the last time you even when to your dad’s place that wasn’t just to check up on him and pick up some clothes before heading back to Carlos’?”

TK opens his mouth to argue some more, even though he knows there is nothing he can say, he knows Judd is right. Instead, he bites down hard on his lip.

Judd, in turn, looks at him with concern. “What’s going on, TK, for real?”

“I freaked out,” he says quietly, knowing it’s true now as it was true last night. Carlos had asked him to move in, the next logical step in their relationship, and it had filled TK with absolute fear. He tries to explain, to make Judd understand.

“I have been in love before,” he starts, swallowing hard as he remembers Alex and their failed relationship. “I thought we were going to be together forever, so I took the next step in our relationship in it blew up in my face,” he tells his friend, feeling the old ache. “It almost cost me my life when it ended. I love Carlos so much more than I ever loved Alex. What if I take this step, and then he leaves me too, I don’t know how I would survive that.”

Judd looks at him for a moment, and then without saying anything, pulls him towards his chest into a strong hug.

TK goes willingly, the stress of the last 24-hours coming to a breaking point as he clings to his friend.

“Shit, kid,” Judd swears softly into his hair. “It’s going to be different this time.”

“How do you know that?” he asks desperately.

Judd pulls back from the hug, making sure he looks at him. “Well, for one, Carlos is as in love with you as you are with him. I don’t know that cheating asshole ex of yours, but I know he didn’t love you like Carlos, which makes him an idiot on top of being an asshole.”

TK chuckles softly at the gruff man’s strong words.

“And two, on the off chance that I’m wrong and it doesn’t work out between you and Carlos, which I’ll eat my cowboy hat if that ever happens. You have us, your dad, and your team. You would survive because we would make sure you do,” Judd says firmly, his eyes a little wet as he looks at him. “The day we became brothers, you became my responsibility, I would make sure you survive it, okay?”

TK’s eyes burn from unshed tears as he gives Judd a wobbly nod. The weight he’s been carrying over his heart slightly lifting.

“I fucked up, didn’t I?” he questions, already knowing the answer.

Judd shrugs it off. “Carlos will forgive you, he’s crazy about you, and the team will forgive you too, you’re our loveable brat.”

“Thanks, Judd,” he says dryly, rolling his eyes even as he smiles his first smile of the day.

Judd gives one back to him, crooked and amused. “What are brothers for, man.”

 TK apologizes to his team for his behavior before he leaves for the day, like Judd predicted they forgive and tease him until he knows everything is okay between them. He leaves the firehouse feeling lighter but knows there is still one person he needs to make things right with.

Getting to Carlos’ apartment a quarter after ten, he lets himself in with his keys, shaking his head at himself. Judd was right about yet another thing, he and Carlos have been living together for months now, it just hasn’t been official.

He showers and changes into a pair of ratty sweats and one of Carlos’ oldest APD shirts, before going back to the couch. With the TV on, he lays back and waits, as his eyes grow heavy his last thought before he falls asleep is Carlos.

He wakes up to a hand cupping his cheek gently, opening his eyes, he finds warm brown eyes looking back at him softly.

“Hi, baby,” Carlos whispers to him with affection, and TK can’t help the choked sob that escapes his throat.

He wraps his arms around Carlos, tucking his face into the crook of his neck. Vaguely he feels himself be picked up and moved until he finds himself sitting on Carlos’ lap as he holds him to his chest, running his hand up and down his back as he waits for him to calm down.

A few minutes pass before he’s able to lift his head and look at Carlos. The love and worry in his eyes make TK feel both relieved and awful, especially when he takes in the dark circles under Carlos’ eyes, proof that he didn’t get much sleep either.

“I’m sorry,” he starts. It makes Carlos shake his head.

“No, I’m sorry,” he says back. “I shouldn’t have rushed you.”

TK huffs, rolling his eyes at the comment. “You didn’t, you and I both know you didn’t. We already live together, Carlos, you just wanted to make it official. It scared me, and I picked a fight, I was awful last night, and you didn’t deserve that,” he whispers, looking away in shame.

He feels Carlos’ fingers under his chin, lifting his head gently until he’s looking into his eyes again.

“What scared you, Ty?” Carlos asks him calmly.

TK takes a breath to steady his racing heart. He tells Carlos everything he told Judd. Every fear inside him pouring out until there is nothing left. When he’s done, he finds Carlos giving him a lovingly tender look.

“Oh, baby,” he sighs, pressing him back against his chest, holding him close. He feels Carlos’ lips against his temple. “You don’t ever have to worry about me leaving you.”

“You can’t promise that,” he whispers, hating how small his voice sounds.

Carlos moves back to look at him. “You’re right. I can’t promise you that,” he says seriously. “I have a dangerous job. I might not come home one day.”

TK closes his eyes for a moment at the words, his heart squeezing painfully tight.

“But willingly, Tyler?” Carlos continues, making sure his eyes are on him. “I can promise that with certainty. I will never leave you willingly.”

“Carlos – “ TK barely gets out, stifling down a sob.

“I am so in love with you, Tyler Kennedy,” Carlos tells him sternly. “Every molecule that makes me, me, is in love with you.”

Carlos cups his cheek, his thumb wiping away at a tear that rolls down his face. “I was made to love you with every part of me. I’ll never leave you.”

TK can’t stop his crying now; he shakes as Carlos holds him through it, all the while whispering in his ear how much he loves him.

When he’s finally calmed down enough to speak, he pulls back to look at Carlos. “I love you the same way,” he says softly.

Carlos smiles at him as he wipes away at his blotchy face. “I know that, baby, I know.”

“Ask me again?” he asks hopefully.

Carlos chuckles, the smile on his face bright and joyful. “TK Strand, will you move in with me?”

TK smiles back as he lets go of his fear, an all-consuming happiness replacing it. “Yes.”

1- Do you want a boyfriend or girlfriend?

Definitely a girlfriend!

2- When did your last hug take place?

Oh God I can't remember! Maybe, just maybe, like 3 or 4 weeks ago when I hugged my sister, who I hadn't seen for a long time.

3- Are you a jealous person?

Mostly not. Sometimes partners mistake being laid-back with lack of feelings but the truth is, jealousy feels bad, like really really bad and I choose not to overthink things in order to not get jealous. In life in general I couldn't be more pleased when people achieve their goals, get nice things and succeed, so no jealousy either!

4- Are you tired right now?

That's my secret Cap, I'm always tired. Excepting for the rare occasions when I get energetic out of nothing and it lasts a couple of hours.

5- Do you chew on your straws?

I used to chew on everything that went in my mouth, but since I stopped biting my nails, the urge for biting on anything went away as well.

6- Have you ever been called a tease?

Uhmmm... I don't think so.

7- Have you ever been awake for 48 hours straight?

Twice! One was a couple months ago, I stayed up in Tumblr posting a lot of crap. The second was back in 2015, when I went to the Empire of the Sun concert. I was so excited that I couldn't sleep for a couple of days, and also I went to the hotel where Luke was and luckily I met him and also met Mac DeMarco. After that I went to a square near the hotel and slept in a bench lol.

8- Do you cry easily?

Damn I do! When I get too emotional, too angry or remember things from my past. Also with some songs or movies.

9- What should you be doing right now?

Idk! I'm in bed right now. If we are talking about duties, I have none. Maybe taking a shower or getting breakfast. This is not a story this is my life.

I know this is nothing new to read and everyone is ‘trying’ to spread awareness. I know when I read them I feel like it's still been sugar coated and make it sound like a pity fest, no-one with a mental health illness of any sort want pity, they most likely want to crawl into the dark hole and go back to sleep.

I stuffer from depression and anxiety and I thought I would give you a look into my life of what actually happens in my day to day life and how I feel. I’m not looking for attention or I doubt anyone will even read this (my life is boring) I just want people to know these awareness posts you see on social media and short little twitter ‘awareness’ are mostly been written by people who don’t actually know anything about been depressed or having anxiety its just what they think it is or what everyone says it is. I’m not saying they are wrong but something always feels off to me when I see the posts (this is just my opinion don’t come for me please). I’m not saying they are all bullshit and that they don’t actually know what it feels like living like this the actually might but its just my opinion.

But yeah i’ll just get right to it i guess so most of my days don’t start in the morning most of mine start from 12-3pm. i know this isn’t anything new to anyone who may work nights but i actually should start work at 9am at the latest, luckily i work at home and look after my brother who has autism, i know i should be up and i should be looking after him and most of the time i do make sure i am, as it is my job and i don’t want anything to happen to him but sometimes i just can’t get out of bed and he does know to come and get me if he every needs anything at all or if I’ve over slept he knows to come and was me I’m not all bad at my job i promise i do make sure he is always ok. i mostly sleep in the latest on weekends when my mum is home so i know everything is taken care of. i don’t go to sleep at night, in the night no one i know is ever awake so i know i can’t upset anyone or do anything wrong that’s why i like to try and stay up until 6-7am, at night i feel like i can actually be myself but most of the time i stay awake and worry about things that i might have done that day, that month or something i did 10years ago. i have such a bad memory i mean i forget to eat in the day or even forget what someone has said 2 seconds after its come out of their mouth, I’m an actual mess but you can damn bet that if I'm feeling bit shit i will remember that i pulled a push door back when i was 15 and still think that people remember me doing that and think that I'm basically a twat that can’t read.

i find it easier to be awake at night as the darkness kinda feels more like home than the sun and i know that sounds daft but id prefer if night was classed as the day and we all slept in the day, i think i wouldn’t actually hesitate to go outside as much i think i wouldn’t be so insecure because no-one would see my flaws as much and i think a lot of people would actually feel better… idk just a thought i always have all the time.

so finally when I'm awake at around late dinner time about 2pm maybe 3pm (weekend) i lay in bed and actually think why have i woken up and hope I'm still asleep and dreaming because i can’t think of anything worse than actually been awake in a day i don’t want to be living, i always feel like I'm taking up room in the world and taking air away from someone who needs it more than me and who’ll appreciate it more than i do. 

It's hard because I don’t want to die but living seems more of a death sentence than death itself. I'm not suicidal I'm not a harm to myself but why is death meant to be the worst thing in the world but yet life is more hard and painful than death…

so once I'm actually awake and gone through the whole why am i awake i finally go down stairs to which someone will always say ‘good morning’ i know they say it in a joking away but i can see that they mean it and that i disappoint them and they think I'm just lazy and need to get my sleeping pattern under control which i don’t disagree with i know its fucked but i go to make a hot chocolate like everyday i sit down have a cig and then watch some telly while everyone it walking around me and its like those music videos from early 2000s where everyone is in time-lapse and I'm sat still. i have no feeling or emotion i try and communicate with my family and i know my mum try with me and knows how and what I'm going through but i almost want to seem fine and not put strain on the family she don’t need her time taking up by her depressed daughter who's going through somethings when her son needs the attention and is her shadow she’s got enough going on. after been downstairs maybe forcing a smile and a laugh out for a few hours i go back to bed and go on a game, watch a film or have a nap, i don't go out much as I’ve cut most of my friends out not because i don’t want to be friends with them anymore i really do but i don’t want to be the one they have to watch out for and burden them with problems that 60% of the time are just made up situations in my head. i haven't told them about anything and i know they’ll think I'm the worst person ever and they'll probably think that I’ve replaced them with my boyfriend which i haven’t I’ve been with him just over a year and I’ve only just recently cut people out of my life i just can’t be that friend anymore that they deserve because they are actually amazing and i do love them more than anything and i hope that one day i can be back to the person i once was. i used to be the joker of the group and try and always make them laugh with some joke or one liner or a dirty joke and it’d make me feel like i had a place in the group but even then i was struggling with depression and i just can’t make a joke any more or have a smile on my face or laugh, i want and i will get back to laughing and joking around with them but right now while i write this i can’t bring myself to doing that and i feel its best for them to live and laugh and go out have fun with each other.

the thing thats getting me through every minute of the day is knowing that even during the most aggressive thunder storm after the rain has fallen and the sun starts to appear a rainbow shines out and something beautiful comes from it and i know depression isn’t anything like a rain storm but it helps me with the thought that one day i will see that rainbow again and the sun will come out and i won’t be scared to stay inside in the dark i will walk out the door and look up and see that sun and rainbow shining down on me. what is happening now and how i feel right now won’t last for ever just like the rain it will pass and i will become the person i want to be again. 

Non of this will probably make any sense. I'm not the best at putting my thoughts down into writing but this has helped me and i hope it will help someone else who may feel like this as well everything will get better might not be today might not be tomorrow but one day you will be the person you want to be and when that day comes you will be stronger and you will b able to look up and see like its the first time and not look down at the floor.

Workaholic+Anxiety/Depression

So, idk if I ever mentioned this at all. But I dont just work on fursuit parts or art. I actually work at a job I love. I work 12 hr days mainly everyday. When I come home, I work on my fursuits or art. I'm a workaholic. But here's the thing.. If I don't do at least one of those things. My anxiety and/or depression kicks in. Normal people would love to have as much time off as they want. Me, not so much. But, today, I got sick.. Not the normal sick. Like your stuffy nose, coughing. You know, that basic shit. I have chronic constant migraines.. I also have chronic insomnia.. Neither of these things help my anxiety and depression. Anyways, I'm sick. I have had maybe a hour of sleep last night. And a migraine for at least a few weeks.. And before you all go "but Cuebutt, I have had headaches before, just take something for it and you'll feel better in no time!" oh hun.. Only if you understood.. Taking my prescribed pain meds for my migraines only makes them bearable. That means no vomiting or dizziness or feeling faint for a few hours. But today my medication didn't work right. So I felt like shit. (Also cause o haven't slept.. Ill get to that part later..) But knowing its just my migraine. And maybe the meds will kick in soon. I put the best smile I could on my face and went to work to start my day. As soon as I walked in.. I ran straight to the bathroom.. I vomited.. Came back out with anxiety.. My boss asked if I was ok. I told her no and my migraine is horrible and I haven't slept for shit lately.. She told me to go home and she'll cover for me. Now as a workaholic, this is devastating news to me.. I can't go home, I have alot of shit I have to do. I dont want to be that person.. At this point my anxiety has gotten the best of me, I'm crying, having a panic attack.. I tell her I can't be that person. I can't just leave and not do my work. She insists that I go home and next time I let her know when I feel sick so she can prepare herself to be at work all day. At this point I leave and the only thing I have on my mind and continues to when im writing this, is that I feel like a disappointment.. I feel like that person that doesnt ahow up for work cause they are "sick".. I also feel like my boss hates me now because she has to stay all day at work.. I hate being that person. Now normal people who aren't workaholics like me. Would love to go home and sleep all day. Well as I said earlier, that's almost rather impossible for me.
