Who are Rook and Trey (if you don’t mind my asking)? (Love your art btw)

Aight so. Rook Hunt and Trey Clover are two characters from a phone game I've been into recently, Twisted Wonderland. Yes. The. The Disney one. Written and Drawn by Yana Toboso (the artist/writer behind Black Butler. No I'm not kidding.) HEAR ME OUT kjhsdjkgdf

It's one of those gacha/visual novel-like games that gets marketed as like a dating sim, but has some of the most. Un-romantic settings/characters I've EVER seen. As an aro/ace, I applaud this lmao. Also amazing character and story writing like what the heck.

Very....boys will be boys energy but not the mean way, more of a “y’all are so stupid and ridiculous” in a fond way??

So every character is like. They aren't the Disney characters themselves but more like BASED on them? Sometimes several. I'm making a powerpoint on this to connect all the dots, here's Trey's lmao

Heartslabyul house! Based on: Mad Hatter, 3 of Clubs, King of Hearts, etc. Generally chill. You think he's the normal one, then he turns around and gives you an hour lecture on how to brush your teeth properly. Ok mom.

He also reminds me along of Ignis from Final Fantasy 15. He's. That type. But also not?? Still instant attachment that way LOL

Thing is he's VERY devoted to his childhood friend/Dorm leader, Riddle. But he will never admit this, not even to himself. (due to Trauma and also being totally completely normal. Uh-huh.)

SO IN WE BRING....ROOK HUNT (who is already on that slide HAHA)

Different house (it's a school setting, like Hogwarts but more Themed Houses based around. Different Disney villains) and SO. How do you explain Rook. Well he's based off the Huntsman from Snow White, mainly.

Gives these vibes. Incoming. Smiley. Will give affection. Somewhat of a threat.

Theater kid set loose. French. Loves beauty in all its forms. Drama, sparkles, has SO much love (platonic, I must preface, every time I use that, I mean in an unromantic manner) to give and is VERY vocal about it. Compliments you constantly and finds uplifting things to say even when you did horribly on something. You fell on your face? He will tell you you fell with magnificence or something idk he's just LIKE THIS ALL THE TIME, he means EVERY WORD TOO-

This dude will not lie. His eyes are too good, he is too perceptive. Oh also he hunts some students for sport, there's that little detail (HE NEVER HURTS ANYONE as far as I know he just. Watches. Love this lil weirdo. Some of his lines are "let's play tag!" and I'm like oh NO LMAO) so like I laugh at him but he's also MILDLY TERRIFYING AND CAPABLE LIKE DUDE-

Anyway, TREY you meet early since he's in the first house you deal with, Heartslabyul. But my first exposure to ROOK was through Trey's Lab Card story, which is honestly a fun time on its own. They are science club buddies!!

So right off the bat you have a very :D :D vs calm =w=;;; dynamic, which I love. But then we have....Trey, who denies how much he cares for people, for Riddle. Who shows care through his actions, baking, Due to Reasons, words of affirmation might murder him on the spot. And then we have Rook, who is a font of flowery warm appreciative words who loves and loves loudly, watching this like 👀 I see you. (incoming shots of Halloween Event part 2)

The guy calls him Chevalier des Roses to his face. Constantly. Rook has little nicknames for alot of people (most dorm leaders he calls "King of Roses" (Riddle), "King of Lions" (Leona) etc.) but he calls Trey a Knight. Of Roses. He's calling Trey Riddle's Knight. And it's very cute.

(Halloween event tossed them together and it was WONDERFUL)

But yeah Trey has his own reasons for shying away from the title. He's a baker's boy, he has no sword or armor or anything, also it's embarrassing as heck-

But Rook still sees how he treats people. He calls a knight for what it is. Rook himself ADORES his dorm Leader, Vil, and sees Trey trying to hide this same devotion and just goes "you are like me!!!" Trey: oh please no I could never-

Also they're SUCH. PARENTS.

It's just. A really good dynamic I'd LOVE to see more of, y'know? An understanding, somehow being understood by someone more than you know yourself. Rook is also weird as HECK sometimes (what do you mean you can see how Leona is yawning ALL THE WAY ACCROSS THE FEILD) and Trey nearby is. His friend. He's just like "I'm so sorry he's just like this" and it's VERY funny akjshdjksdhfs he may have to hold Rook back from blowing up the labs again, dude gets carried away.

Twisted Wonderland has some lovely character dynamics. Also no one is "normal", but Rook is just another level of w h a t.

It feels like alot of interactions were just "hm spin a wheel, see who we get, slap them together" and it WORKS. SOMEHOW. Platonic Rook Trey is just one I've become extremely fond of and it's a rarer one....

like idk... there’s really just something about “big, dangerous (mean) man” + “teeny, tiny babbie” that makes me absolutely LOSEEEEEEEEEE MY MIND... esp since we actually get to see clips of bakugo when he was a kid, too... 

like whenever i see him i get so 🥺  bc i literally just want to kiss his baby cheeks so bad LOL... even though he’d probably HATE it.

But god.... daddy!kiribaku.... i know there’s a pretty good fic floating around for it that I’m too lazy to find rn but, FUCK jSdkf;LSJNKfld;sdjn... 

They probably fight over your baby SOOOO often, nearly speeding to get home just for their turn (and it’s making me laugh to think about Baku being like, “give me my baby NOW,” and Kiri calling you to tell him to stop)...

And I bet taking them to PTA meetings or parent-teacher conferences is such a hassle... they’re too big for the school chairs and they make such a fuss when anyone does anything except praise your child... Kiri getting all pouty and Baku getting mad... 

That being said, omg... you guys definitely run the best bake sale stand during the fair, are literally cheering the loudest during school events (even if your kid sucks at everything, which they probably don’t) and when your baby gets old enough, your house is always the hangout house... with Kiri being the super invasive and weird dad who always asks the kids stuff like “how’s it hanging, children?” and Baku is the grumpy one who tells them all to get “the hell” out of your room. 

ANYWAY, I should probably do a full post on this one day... but for now, yeah. ❤️

Can you explain why you don't like tsoa? I don't mean any hate, I'm just wondering what your point of view on it is!!

A few points off the top of my head: • The most common criticism is Patroclus’ characterization, so I won’t go into that much; just check my iliad tag, I’ve reblogged several critical posts that all explain that in way more detail. I’ll just summarize this point in that poor Patroclus gets the Bella Swan treatment of his life revolving completly around Achilles. I think he’s supposed to be Relatable because he’s kind of bad at everything which… has 0 connection to canon Pat, who was kind of a badass. As is characteristic of bad writing, instead of having Pat be a multifaceted character who is both kind (albeit still capable of cruelty), thoughtful, but also a badass, I guess Miller thought she had to pick just one trait (and then amp it up to 10 right into straight up woobifying). idk why, considering he was all of those traits in the Iliad just fine??? • For example, in Pat’s canon backstory, he ends up killing a boy over a game of dice, and that’s why he’s sent to live with Achilles. Instead of like, exploring the potential evolution of a troubled youth growing into a compassionate and empathetic man (maybe even due to his relationship with Achilles in specific), Miller just writes it off as an accident that I think she mentions at one point gave him nightmares but (afair) never comes up again. That, I think, is central to one of my huge problems with both Achilles and Patroclus’ characterizations: neither of them have any true character development. They’re the same from start to finish, which is not only unrealistic but boring to read. • Despite the story wholly centering around these two, both their relationship and who they are as individuals is never really fleshed out very well. Dude, the book is like 300 pages, tell us a little more about their likes and dislikes?? What it is exactly that made them fall in love with each other besides purple prose about how hawt Achilles is? Tell us about some dumb stuff they fought over and laughed about the next day?? Anything resembling real people in a real relationship? • Although YMMV, and ancient ideas of sexuality are completly different from modern ones, Achilles had relationships with both men and women– it’s fair, then, to call him bi. This book has him describing sex with a woman as like…slimy and awful. Very much like babbys first yaoi fanfic. IMO this has had the worst effect on the fandom because the bi-erasure with Achilles and Pat has since been god awful on tumblr; the tag for the iliad almost strictly calls Achilles ‘gay’ now.  • Another common criticism is the horrible treatment of Thetis, Achilles’ mom, who for no justifiable reason except to be the Obstacle between Ach and Pat’s Doomed Gay Love, is really awful to Patroclus. Again, no resemblance to her canon self and completly unnecessary and just…bad fanfic tropes??? Why??? • I didn’t really like how any of the other characters were written. I know people seem to really like Miller’s Odysseus but I wasn’t much of a fan of how he was written, or Diomedes either, who randomly says ‘fuck’ off the cuff by the way, which is jarring as heck in a novel set in Ancient Greece… I know the focus is Achilles and Pat so it’s fine that she doesn’t wanna flesh out everyone else, but that doesn’t excuse just completly half-assing your side characters. Her characterizations for both Agamemnon and Menelaus were completly, interchangable, afterthoughts, which is kind of disappointing considering they play a pretty big role in the boys’ story?I could go on tbh but again, there’s a lot of other good posts on the subject that have said it already. I don’t have anything against people who read it and enjoyed it, different strokes for different folks, but I really hate how it effected what seems to be everyone’s ‘canon’ concepts of these characters and how the iliad tag is like 99% tsoa characterization :,|
