Unit 1 Part A: New practice

What is your new art form/practice?

Extending my own art practice:

I am inspired by micro-photography, in particular, and I feel like this would be a great practice to work on. It’s an important art to practice, in my opinion. It preserves memories and moves people in ways that words sometimes cannot.

It is arguably the most important visual art. It’s a complex language that I know will enable me to express joy and sorrow, wonder and sympathy. Every emotion can find a place in photography; I want to learn how to capture that. 

I want to be able to capture detail through photography and I want it to be alive with colour and vibrancy. This will allow me to develop a visual language for some of the most difficult emotions I have experienced in my life...

Unit 1 Part A: Skills development plan

Now that I have taken a liking to photography, I will get a tripod and memory card this week so I can make better use of this new art form.

Also, as I will be going to Paris in February, It makes sense to bring my camera/tripod so I can capture some of the city’s greatest landmarks. I feel like I will be prepared by then if I research some special camera modes used in Canon cameras 

like Auto (when the camera chooses the optimum shutter speed, aperture, ISO and flash settings for the shot), Portrait (when a shallow depth of field is chosen so the subject is focussed in the foreground), Macro (getting close-up images), Landscape (to create a well focused image from the foreground into the distance), Sports (a continuous shooting mode/freezing movement with a high shutter speed), and Night Portrait Mode (balancing the darkness of the background with the need to light the subject in the foreground).

I will also attend a photography masterclass with Simon from Praxis. There I will develop an understanding of various techniques, gain a stronger insight into commercial art practices and receive some feedback on my own ideas, development and progress.

Further development/planning:

On my Pinterest page, I have been pinning photos that have inspired me. These are works, mostly macro photographs, that I admire and want to try out myself. So far, I have learnt that turning the lens steadily will enable the photographer to focus on certain objects.

Mindmapping my ideas so I know what I need to learn to take photography more seriously:

I have adjusted some settings so my camera is on automatic focus. This allows me to focus on the subject and can ultimately mean the difference between a sharp photo and a missed opportunity.
