[ LOADING INFORMATION ON HER.OINE’S MAIN DANCE YUJIN…. ]
DETAILS
CURRENT AGE: 22 DEBUT AGE: 17 SKILL POINTS: 05 VOCAL | 10 DANCE | 05 RAP | 10 PERFORMANCE
INTERVIEW
yujin was accepted into singularity because of her dance. although she never really learned properly and just followed the steps through videos, they told her that her dance could be polished so that she would be better by the time she was ready to debut. they were right, though.
since her.oine has a girl crush image, yujin is expected to act like one whenever she’s on camera. at first it doesn’t seem so hard, yujin is confident she could carry such an image well, especially when she has a resting bitch face. and that’s when she gets confused—netizen has called her rude and arrogant because of her looks, and now singularity wants her to smile even more. of course it’s easy to smile, but she couldn’t possibly do so all the time. the main dancer of her.oine receives negative comments more than the positive ones since debut, yujin is always wrong in the eyes of netizen.
she is either too quiet or too loud, too careful or too spontaneous. she has been criticized by people who think her.oine would be better without yujin, who is also seen as mean and rude towards her members.
yujin used to care about what people think of her and got insecure pretty often, despite how confident she looks most of the time. until the second comeback of the group, yujin had been trying to fit in the company’s and netizen’s standards in terms of her words and actions. yujin is all fine when it comes to performing, but it has became a great worry for the company when her.oine gets to be a guest on variety shows. although the group is said to be lack of variety skills, yujin wants to prove them wrong.
she always does everything that they ask her to do during variety shows, it doesn’t matter if it would tarnish the group’s strong image or her own. just like she does it at home when with her siblings, yujin doesn’t hesitate when they need her to be funny or shameless about doing a mission. fans claim yujin would be the variety queen of her generation, and she couldn’t deny that she is actually a little proud about it. after all she was born to be a happy virus.
don’t talk too much, smile sweetly, make sure to laugh like a lady too.
that’s what she is told every time she gets on variety shows. it’s not like she forgets it though. yujin just finds it difficult to pretend to be someone that she’s not, to pretend to not be herself. by the time they came back with ‘boombayah’, yujin gets a little bit more comfortable to be herself on shows. singularity thinks her contagious laugh is a flaw, for that she tends to laugh like a maniac and has a hard time stopping once she already starts laughing. some find her easy going and laid back personality to be endearing to watch, but some believe she is only acting that way to get attention.
in general, yujin is described to be nice and friendly by her fans. she often teases and bullies her members as a way to joke around (some get this the wrong way though, they think she’s really a mean person) but also takes care of them when the media least expect it. yujin could be very playful and childish too, and people react to this both positively and negatively.
BIOGRAPHY
she was often told that she was a lucky child by those nannies who raised her up, for that her parents loved her so much. little yujin would believe those words. she would believe that all those pink dresses and pretty dolls they got her were a token of their affection. she was told she was lucky she could have everything she wanted in this world, because mom and dad was capable of buying them. yes, kang yujin was a very lucky child to begin with.
she got everything she wanted, but never once anything that she needed.
at the age of five, she grew tired of playing alone and always asked for her mom and dad, but only the nannies came to her call. they said mom and dad were busy now, and that they would come home very soon. she waited and waited for them, but it had gotten too long and her little eyes were getting tired. yujin saw them when they were having meals, usually for breakfast and dinner and rarely for lunch. that was the only time she was able to talk with them. but before she could even finish her story, they were ready to leave again. she was glad the nannies would still love to listen.
their house always felt too big, it was always just yujin and the nannies at home anyways. she played in her room most of the time—even her room felt a little bit too big for a little girl like her, but she was lucky she had a room of her own, instead of having to share it with someone else. yujin was a bright child, she always had been, despite how dull home could be at times. the nannies always made her felt loved, so she should be grateful for that too.
one day, her parents brought back a little boy to their house. he was introduced as kang jun, and he was now a part of the family, so yujin should get along with him. it was confusing and exciting at the same time, but she never asked for more. little yujin reached out for the boy and they quickly became friends. yujin later found out he was older by three years, she was so happy she got an older brother now that she couldn’t stay away from him.
the two of them were homeschooled because mom and dad didn’t want them to get influenced by unnecessary things outside. yujin didn’t mind it at first, but she started to get bored of it, having to stay at home for a long time didn’t actually do her any good. she wanted to go out and explore the world. she wanted to make a lot of friends that she would have to greet everyone by the street. she did try to talk to her parents about attending public school (or even private, if that’s what they preferred), yet nothing seemed to be able to change their minds. she told them she wanted to learn music and they went to get her a music tutor. hell, they even bought a piano and a guitar for her if doing that would make it easier to learn at home.
she could never understand, what’s so bad about being outside anyways?
after too many attempts of trying to get mom and dad to send her away, yujin finally gave up. maybe she was destined to stay inside this house forever—as dramatic as she always made it sounded like, it wasn’t so bad now that she had two younger sisters by the time she was twelve. they were also raised by the nannies, and sometimes jun and her helped them too. they grew very close for that they only had each other, and their home was the only place they knew existed in this world. jun told her he would leave one day. he had been offered to be trained under 99 entertainment—yujin was nothing but happy for him, if that’s what he wanted to do anyways. she didn’t want to let him go. it was true that yujin had her younger sisters now, but it wasn’t the same without him. it would never be the same without jun.
she didn’t want him to leave, but she knew it would be the best for him.
yujin looked after her sisters once jun left, telling them bedtime stories and lulling them to sleep at night. it was always the nannies who did that during her time, given that she had nobody to do it for her. mom and dad had too little time to tend to such things, she knew they had more important things to settle anyways. she didn’t want her sisters to feel abandoned or lonely like she always did. it was just so horrible to feel that way at such a young age.
she was thirteen when she came across a new entertainment company holding an audition in town. she had asked for a day out with her little sisters, and they were granted a permission as long as one of the nannies followed them. yujin didn’t know what made her step forward, was it her passion? she wasn’t sure. she had always loved the idea of performing in front of people. it looked fun, and she thought it would be nice to try. she went and asked if anyone could lend her a guitar so she could play—and she did, she played and sang to an acoustic version of younha’s waiting.
they praised yujin for her sweet voice and asked if she could dance for them. that’s when she got a little nervous. she never really danced in front of anyone before (except for silly dances she did to make her sisters laughed), but she wouldn’t deny that she actually tried to learn dance on her own back at home. she loved music, and music made her danced. she hesitated, but never once would she back out. and so she danced like they wanted her to.
she wasn’t expecting much, but when singularity offered to train her under them, yujin couldn’t stop crying for hours. to be a singer was her childhood dream, but never once did she ever tell anyone about it. she figured out maybe mom and dad would like it better if she became a businesswoman, just like them. and even if she wanted to be a singer, she wasn’t sure if she could fit as one. they said idol life was hard, that the long practice hours and strict rules would make her want to wish that she didn’t choose that kind of life. but yujin was a fighter, and she would fight for what she wanted to do.
she saw it as a chance for her to learn more about the world outside her house.
yujin went home and couldn’t wait for her parents to get off work, she just had to tell them about this. it was the first time she got so passionate over something, and she had lost count how many times she had told the nannies about it. she couldn’t wait to tell jun about it too, so she had hoped he would call soon. and who was she kidding, her parents were obviously not happy with her decision. but yujin wouldn’t give up and keep on trying to convince them about it, and she wouldn’t stop until they agree to let her go.
they finally said ‘fine’, although the expressions on their faces didn’t actually reflect their words. yujin joined singularity in 2009 and she was so ready for anything, for that she had chosen to live this life now. she didn’t mind the seemingly endless practice hours at all. yujin could sing and dance all day and night if they wanted her to, she was so ready to commit to this new life of hers. at first it was hard to survive without the nannies around—they were always there to check on and help her with anything, and now that she was all alone here, she thought it was time for her to learn to be independent now. she did miss them and her sisters sometimes though.
she was told that there was nothing wrong with her voice, it’s just that it sounded too sweet to fit into the concept of the upcoming girl group. but she was a good dancer, all the girls were, but yujin seemed to stand out the most between them. she was able to pick up the choreography in a short span of time and her moves were said to be very smooth and sharp, as if dancing had came as natural to her as breathing did. yujin learned a lot about dancing once she trained under singularity, and her passion had only grown bigger over time. she was later announced as one of the final line up for the company’s first girl group, set to debut some time around 2013.
due to her impressive dancing skills, yujin was chosen to be the main dancer of her.oine, the first group to ever debut under singularity. their debut day was the best time of her life, it was every trainee’s dream to be able to finally debut, and now she knew she had turned her dream to be a reality. stepping into the idol life would only be harder, but yujin was ready for anything. after all, there would be no rainbow without rain. she loved her girls and the company, they were like a new family. her.oine’s concepts were definitely her style and she never once regretted her decision to join singularity, yet there were a few things that she wasn’t fond of the company.
she loved it here, she just hoped they were given more things to work on sometimes.
the fact that they were slow in releasing new music caused yujin to sometimes doubt her life decision. she believed her.oine was just working as hard as the other groups, yet they didn’t get as much comeback as the others did. maybe it was because the company was still new, she often told herself just to feel better about it. yujin wanted to be busy, wanted her days be so full of schedules she would have to loss some sleep to get them done. there was nothing much to do when they were not promoting, and that’s when yujin hated this life the most. she would still be dancing in the practice room even if they had no music shows to attend, because that’s why she had came here in the first place. she didn’t come here to slack off.
she was always reminded of home again when they were stuck in the practice room.

[ LOADING INFORMATION ON HER.OINE’S LEAD DANCE, MAIN RAP MOON GAEUN…. ]
DETAILS
CURRENT AGE: ## DEBUT AGE: ## SKILL POINTS: 00 VOCAL | 00 DANCE | 00 RAP | 00 PERFORMANCE SECONDARY SKILLS: ERASE IF NONE
INTERVIEW
pairing her.oine’s girl-crush concept with gauen’s age and position as the group’s main rapper naturally led to the company enforcing the image of the strong unnie to her. from the moment of her debut, she made thick eyeliner and strawberry-blonde locks hers. the clothes her stylists would dress her in mostly comprised of studded jackets, hints of leather and netted stockings of all sorts of colours. her introverted personality walked hand-in-hand with the requirements for her to seem unapproachable and intimidating in order to maintain the reputation her company had created for her. on stage, she was to give it her all; capture everyone with her charisma and impress with her own written rap lyrics. off stage, and in the eyes of the public, she was to play the role of the daunting celebrity: the one that naturally looks unimpressed all the time and talks only when she wants and has to. it wasn’t necessarily hard, when all she had to do was smile less and excuse her shyness as her image in the group.
unfortunately, not many bought the persona.
her large eyes don’t go well with the eyeliner. she has smiling lips that ruin her strong image. the shape of her head is just unlucky. she has a double-chin. her face is big and boring. she’s dull next to the other members. she seems more cute than cool. her concept is wrong. she’s publicised wrongly. singularity doesn’t know what they’re doing.
the online comments often made consistent patterns. it was always about her looks and how she was never sub-par with the others. the years that followed their debut proved to be challenging, especially when her.oine’s members kept flunking every variety show appearance and returning to the spotlight after hiatuses long enough to make the public forget them. they were the ‘make-it-or-break-it’ group that eventually lacked activities and promotions, due to their mundaneness and the company’s levels of productivity. every member had too much time, and lacked the patience, but the decisions were never theirs to make.
the group’s two-year inactivity after boombayah promotions birthed the opportunity for gaeun to make changes for the better. an intensive diet was what she went through, under the strict supervision of a dietician and a body trainer. she underwent a life-changing phase — gaining more popularity after the pictures of her after her hard-earned transformation began to circulate in the net. they start to call her the little fan bing bing; a goddess whose looks matured along with her age. by the time whistle promotions began, she wasn’t the strong unnie anymore. she was the chic oldest member — elegant and graceful, with an unexpected talent for rapping and freestyle dancing. the comments got better. but it’s impossible to please the entire world.
her chin is so sharp. her face looks too small compared to last time. i bet she did her eyes. diet = surgery on her whole face. that’s not gauen; that’s another person. this concept is better, but she’s plastic.. so it’s still bad. why is she pretending to be natural, anyway? she’s not perfect either way; it’s frustrating. two years of hard work did not invite more opportunities for her to be criticised. it’s now become a chore for her to please everyone when a huge number of them are incredibly demanding. it’s getting unmanageable for her to smile through the insensitive questions and jabs given by the inquisitive members of the public and the industry.
the woman’s now counting the days until her last strand of patience snaps, and the world discovers the strong no one thought she had.
BIOGRAPHY
i. conflicting minds.
gaeun learns about the spotlight at the dinner table. she’s gripping greasy chopsticks, slurping noodles and stabbing meat patties when the television blares and calls for her attention. between the strands of her hair and the shoulders of her parents — her gentle father and her conservative mother — she sees bright-eyed beauties with nightingale voices. princess clothing and high heels. vibrant eyelids and vibrant lips. the singing unnies twirl in sync on the illuminating screen, and when they laugh, she does too. it’s the only sound in the room, other than the clinking utensils and roaring fan-chants. mother frowns and looks over to see what’s stopping her easily-distracted daughter from finishing her meal.
mother’s frown deepens.
“i told you not to switch on these idol shows around her,” is the murmur mother passes to father without looking up from her plate, “she’ll get ideas.”
“sora, the girl loves to dance. nothing wrong in giving her some people to look up to.”
“nothing wrong? dongwon, look at those girls. wearing short skirts and tight dresses like that, and all that make-up.. and what are they? sixteen? seventeen? it’s just horrifying. what if she wants to be like them?”
“what’s wrong with that?”
“you mean, you don’t mind our daughter walking around like that? with her legs and stomach all bare for the whole world to see?”
“we can always advice her. she listens to us well.”
“sure, she does,” sarcasm accompanies the sudden skidding of mother’s chair as she stands, eyes glaring with disapproval, “you tell yourself that. she has a future, jungwon. she’s intelligent. i don’t want her selling herself like those.. idols. whatever you call them.” mother leaves, and father only watches her leave with unease settling in his stomach. his gaze sadly casts itself over his daughter. his heart makes a painful throb.
he sees hope harbour in the eyes of innocence, and a spark of an undying determination.
ii. strung emotions.
sixteen is the age of achievement and open doors.
she reluctantly finishes a toeic test after cram school one time and learns that she delivers grand results. the teachers say she takes after her novelist father: always hungry for knowledge, a lover of literature of all kinds. a magician with words. they say she should study languages because she has an apparent flare for it. they say it would do everyone proud.
sixteen is also the age of rebellion and audacious adventures.
she doesn’t attend school the following day. her parents have no suspicions. by the toilets of an old korean restaurant, gaeun changes into her prettier clothes. she doesn’t look back as she waves at the road for a cab, dusty bills in her palms. she is timid dreams and newfound valiance as she walks into a building decorated by pictures of successful celebrities and audition posters. at the counter, she hands over an audition slip with forged signatures and false consent. they bring her in and tell her to do what she does.
she smiles and dances — just like those unnies from her childhood. they applaud and ask if she can do anything else. it’s sudden, but she presents a rap from a retired band’s song, recalling its lyrics from her fuzzy mind, reliving moments from her past performances in the shower.
she tells herself that an immediate failure would guarantee the route that the teachers and her parents had been waiting to watch her walk down on. that the day is a temporary dream come true, and a blissful picture for her to reminisce in the future, when she’s someone that isn’t an idol.
she’s actually more than passable. a registration form lands in her hands instead of defeat. singularity tells her that they want her. excitement buzzes wild in her blood, but the anxiety doesn’t go away.
she reaches home late. mother is mildly cross as she walks in with quivering lips, speechless to the question regarding her earlier absence in school. gaeun glances at the dinner table, and there father is, looking completely understanding, curious for answers as well. father waves and smiles. something sharp pierces through her. she’s not ready for the disappointment.
“i’m sorry.”
iii. isolated hearts.
she becomes a stranger and a victim.
she drifts away from father. once every few nights, they do meet at the living room, when he’s flipping through sports channels and she’s looking for a couch to rest her tired bones on. they do talk, and it’s uncomfortably bittersweet. father says he approves the star dream, but the droop of his eyelids every time resemble his high hopes — sunken; fallen.
mother doesn’t regard her anymore. everyday is a rain of derogatory terms and distasteful remarks. on her kinder days, she tells gaeun her brain is a lie, and she looks like a pig in whore clothing. on other days, she tells the world she doesn’t have a daughter. mother denies her existence, but the world welcomes it.
year 2013: she’s a youth with forced optimism and a naive charm. singularity assesses her and finds her and her promising array of abilities to be ready. they bring her to a room and stand her alongside three other girls, and they brand them as her.oine. she belongs to a group now.
so, she leaves what apparently was home for the dorms. she vows to visit, but promises are so easy to falsify. there is no worth in returning to the people who wouldn’t accept her unless she fits their standards of the ideal, filial daughter.
months after, she stands before a real audience for the first time, boasting high boots and a shoulder-baring top.
the charismatic unnie and rapper of the group. good evening, i’m her.oine’s moon gaeun! the speakers begin to play their debut single. the crowd is intense as they roar. her childhood returns as a loving memory.
greasy chopsticks. cold dinner. her parents’ shoulders. the singing unnies.
how warm, it is — the furl of ambition, as it settles in the base of her aspiring, unknowing heart.

[ LOADING INFORMATION ON SINGULARITY’S TRAINEE JANG JIEUN…. ]
DETAILS
CURRENT AGE: 19 SKILL POINTS: 07 VOCAL | 03 DANCE | 02 RAP | 03 PERFORMANCE
INTERVIEW
Jang Jieun, is the trainee who seems to have ‘it all going on.’ Whether it’s the unique tone and pitch of her voice, her dancing skills, rap or her stage performance. It’s very clear that Jieun deserves a spot among the best of the best. To her dismay, it’s rumored that Jieun, one of the most expressive people; minus when she’s feeling neutral, will be marketed with a cold and chic concept; A surprise to her as she always strives to be anything but; especially considering the warm presence her older brother always brings around set. Many have high expectations for her, considering her brother is a well loved and respected idol and it’s rumored that she can definitely feel the pressure by the various nosebleeds she’s been rumoured to have during her training. But she promises a fun and unique stage along with the help of those who end up being around her. The girl said that she hopes to be able to not only uphold the vocal standard he has established for them, but to also be good enough to one day stand on the same stage and create a really touching performance. For her future plans regarding debut, whether she goes solo or ends up joining a group, she plans on dominating the industry and showing that girl idols can do anything boy idols can do, if not better. She wants to make others aware of the gender discrimination in the industry and make sure that they know she is actively fighting against it everyday by trying to step out of it by being as honest as she can be within the industry and openly taking stances on what she believes in.. In conclusion, The nineteen year old, wishes all well and that hopes that they all can achieve their dreams together.
BIOGRAPHY
(tw abuse)
The life of Jang Jieun was supposed to be a simple one. She would fall asleep to her brother’s singing, adore him from all angles and then follow in his footsteps as she learned how to sing and eventually, teach herself how to dance. She would shyly sing the first notes at the small age of four, wanting to join her brother in singing an old song they had both grown up on and she would begin to dance as the shark family song began to play those first catchy and eccentric beats. She would do average in school aside from some of her literature classes, which she happened to excel at. As her brother becomes a trainee, she’s unsure. Should she follow after him or should she just wait on the sidelines and live a normal life? The thought of going on stage had made her nervous. After all, she couldn’t sing on demand like other could. She had to be in the moment. So At age twelve, she tells her parents she’s not going to audition for any companies and lulls the small dream to sleep It’s at sixteen that everything happens at once. Her brother debuts and seeing him on stage makes her heart flutter. From both pride and longing that that could be her. So with a boost of confidence, she auditions for multiple companies and hopes to hear back from just one, to make her dream come true. Sixteen is also where she finds love for the first time. In gentle glances and tender ‘accidental’ touches that make her heart pound. But the only thing is, it’s one of her brother’s close friends. What started out as just some minor tutoring became some sort of secret thing that she wasn’t sure how to react to. She liked him, of course– more than anything, really. But keeping such good news from someone you told everything to was hard for her.Everything seemed to happen at once and as she signed the contract with the company that explicitly stated no dating and began her trainee days, the anxiety of whether or not this was a good choice for her began to bubble up once again. She was too deep with her boyfriend to just cut things off because she was trainee now and of course she didn’t want to hurt him.She kept it a secret still, something she had became good at doing since they had gotten together and she lived her life as Jang Jieun, the single trainee and Jang Jieun, lee donghun’s girlfriend. But it seemed, more quickly than not, that things turned pretty sour pretty fast. The sudden change in her availability and his controlling nature didn’t turn out well. He began to get angry over little things, like her being unable to meet him at a certain time, but being available later, or her not being able to couple outfit with him when they did go out on dates and like this, the tension between them began to pile up. Jieun had thought it was a good thing, if she just became understanding and he got fed up and broke up with her, he couldn’t blame her for anything and he’ll come around eventually. That’s what she had hoped. Then she didn’t have to worry her company contract or telling her brother about anything. It could all just stop there. But on one particular night, where she had had dinner with him and went to his place to watch a movie, things had gone sour. She was leaving early to train for her evaluation. Being seventeen at the time, her parents let her stay out later than before and hence she had the freedom to go as she pleased, (at least to training) so as for her whereabouts, no one was really worried. With a short, “I have to go train” her boyfriend seemed to explode, asking all sorts of questions like, “are you cheating on me?” “are you seeing someone at the company?” “who are you always rushing to meet.” etc and it only made Jieun, who knew nothing but love, recoil. She was naturally timid and more reserved than most, but the state she had been in that day was nothing like this. She had never seen him like this and it scared her— and rightfully so as he hit her for the first time; right up against her temple and hard enough to give her a nosebleed. They had broken up.And Jieun had went about her trainee days, telling people that that day she had been stressed studying for an exam and had gotten a really bad nosebleed and didn’t have time before training to change her sweater. She was upset for a while though, wondering why he would ever go to such lengths, or why he hadn’t even given her the time to properly answer. He called back though, a few months later with roses, an apology written out in a card and a box of her favorite type of chocolate. He promised to be more understanding and to love her like she deserved to be and somehow, through it all she ended up taking him back. And that is how they’ve been, on and off every time he explodes. She harbors it in the back of her mind like it doesn’t exist when she’s working. He doesn’t exist when she’s working, but every other week she shows up with a choker on her neck, or lying about where and how she got the bruises that litter her pale skin from time to time. She still wonders what the correct choice was. If she hadn’t followed her dream, he wouldn’t have thought she was cheating on him. But if she didn’t, she would’ve been longing for the stage.

[ LOADING INFORMATION ON HER.OINE’S MAIN VOCAL, LEAD RAP SONG SURAN…. ]
DETAILS
CURRENT AGE: 23 DEBUT AGE: 18 SKILL POINTS: 10 VOCAL | 05 DANCE | 10 RAP | 05 PERFORMANCE
INTERVIEW
song suran is first marketed to the public as the adorable, slightly androgynous toddler born to a famed producer/rapper and his wife, an equally famous actress. she lives in the spotlight from then on, whether she’s particularly interested in it or not. in the early years her image is made for her, constructed by her parents and an editing crew. insightful, odd, sensitive - she’s a cute kid to watch and her childlike fascination with her father’s production equipment is endearing. but the show ends and soon she fades away, present only in the occasional social media update.
song suran is next marketed by midas, though not to the public. rather she is marketed to shareholders and casting directors, those who will be constructing the dual images of the upcoming girl groups. she’s got a lot of potential they point out. a lot of raw talent. and the story, the story is good. the media play there is great, there are already pann articles out about how song kiyong’s daughter signed with midas, is training for the girl group, rumored to have an upcoming debut. of course, this falls apart.
song suran then becomes a product of singularity, shaped into something fierce and feminine at once. it’s an image that suits her. she is lucky - her quick wit and familiarity with the way of the celebrity world have afforded her the insight needed to navigate image making all on her own. she presents herself as clever, sweet, a bit snarky but never too much - just enough to be funny, every quip chased with bright laughter and a smile that accentuates still rounded cheeks. she does what she has to do to get airtime, to be noticed - flirts here and there, acts up on social media. nothing incriminating, but just enough to get comments. enough to get articles. is she doing okay, they ask. she’s so pretty but what’s going on in her head? she’s trying too hard, stranger and stranger lately. she’s abrasive one minute and demure the next, what’s up with her? she’s too much, her gaze hawklike, charm or charisma overflowing. but what else is she supposed to do, when her company won’t promote her? when this is her only outlet, her only way to get out there, to get noticed? the pictures she takes, god, what is she doing? what a tryhard. does she only party? where’s her bra? does she think she’s that artsy, this stupid hipster? so yeah, there are scandals, blemishes and rumors that tarnish her image, but considering she’s no longer the bubblegum princess she’d been groomed to be at midas, she figures it should be fine. at the very least her family name should be able to keep her afloat, at least until her company figures out how to promote a damn idol group.
by the time singularity is going under, by the time her.oine is fading into the obscurity of horrifically inept promotions, which manage to bury even the catchiest of songs, song suran is a creature of sincerity. that’s the image anyway. she’s bright and sharp, steely and sweet at once, something strangely both cutting and soft. she rides on the name of her family, a shield held up alongside her undeniable talents in rap and vocals. her stage presence mostly makes up for middle range dancing. her duality is captivating in itself. or at least, that’s the hope.
when jawbreaker is announced, behind the scenes, suran is worry incarnate. by the time jawbreaker is seeing success, she is hope against hope. she builds a name for herself on the back of endless efforts, of attempting to demonstrate the kind of skills worthy of an all around talent. they market her as the secret key, the captivating visuals, the sultry voice, the surprisingly sweet and sour back and forth of her disposition. kjh wants the world to see her as authentic, as engaging. equal parts fierce and fun, as if it weren’t hard enough to project one image alone. they make her into a sympathetic figure, struggling with her passion for music but never being recognized for it. they put her onto shows that build sympathy for her. she’s genuine now, she’s sweet and she’s focused and she’s charming. she’s a bit of an underdog despite everything, despite the name cache. she gets bullied but she keeps her head up. she sasses and snarks on running man but they put her into a haunted house and she’s a mess of tears and childish, plaintive whimpers. she’s exhausted and more than slightly frustrated about starting over, but with proper management comes greater expectations, she thinks, and puts her nose to the grindstone again. anything for opportunity.
BIOGRAPHY
song suran has been constructing her image since she was born. or more accurately, since she was about twenty months old. the theme of the show was dads taking care of their children, in a distant ancestor to the return of superman show, but on a more “documentarian” basis - less cute activities and more stressed celebrities. and, in suran’s case, the unlikely treat that was growing up with a camera in your face and comments rolling in online.
the show wasn’t wildly popular or anything, but it was out there, it was happening, and by the time she was three years old she hated it. she was tired of people recognizing her, strangers coming up to coo at her and touch her hair, her father showing her off like an accessory. the man was a notable musician in his own right and her mother an actress, though neither were traditionally the idol type. he wrote, composed, and produced his own music and his fame mostly came from a fluke that would only have been possible in the days before the hyper-saturation of the market.
so her childhood photo albums are professionally done and feature clippings from various advertisements she’d been in. her childhood videos? they’re just reels from the show, edited down to remove the other families that had featured. once they left the show when she was five, the pictures and videos mostly stop. she exists as an accessory, as it were.
she doesn’t mind that too much. she spent much of the rest of her childhood in relative obscurity, aside from showing up in social media pictures or the occasional article here or there, when her father took her somewhere or they were out to lunch with someone worth writing an article about. fame felt natural to her, and also inherently unpleasant. frankly, none of the people she knew who were famous (and there were many such aunts and uncles) seemed all too happy about it either, skulking around to try and clutch at their own dwindling shreds of privacy.
as she gets older, fewer and fewer people still recognize her. she gets involved in her dad’s music, follows him to the studio, sings along with him. she takes vocal lessons when he notices her natural talent, takes music theory lessons when she shows interest in that. they don’t want her to be famous, they say, which is ironic considering. they want her to be happy though, and with the two of them as artistically inclined as they are perhaps its not a surprise that she is apparently following in their footsteps, genetically predisposed. or at the very least seeking out the familiar, things she grew up around.
eventually she auditions for midas. but her voice isn’t right for the groups they have in mind, her image is too strong, too fierce. they like the idea of her though- or of her family cache, the cute story of legacy fame. so they sign her on. they like the idea of her for their upcoming groups, probably the cute one - it’ll sell better, and she’s got a sweet smile.
it’s the anxiety that gets her.
she can’t live up to this bubblegum pop princess image. her vocal range isn’t right and her rapping is all but useless, and despite their promises, they have no intentions of letting her anywhere near the production booth - this becomes incredibly clear as soon as she’s signed the papers.
the breakdowns come on hard and fast after that, and to be honest they keep her around longer than she deserves, just because of her name, the cache, the media play.
eventually they cut her loose, and she beats a retreat quickly.
it’s not the end, it turns out, even if it ought to have been.
singularity reaches out to her after she starts promoting her cover videos on facebook, showcasing some of her own work (though very rarely).
the direction suits her a lot more, they offer her a role that would give her a chance to rap and to sing, and she likes that. she likes the idea they’ve got in mind. after time spent training, she even likes the company alright.
when debut rolls around, suran even likes the goddamn song.
the problems come after that. singularity is small, and close to broke, and the fact of the matter is they just aren’t promoting them enough. one track a year, generally speaking, isn’t enough to help them stay above water, isn’t enough to keep them high enough on the charts that they can really stand out. the only thing that’s keeping them from completely flopping is raw talent - singularity also shells out for good songs, when they bother, and the girl crush concept is fresh enough that it stands out, leaves an impact.
still, it’s not what she envisioned. they’re not even close to letting her produce her own stuff, let alone anything for the group. she’d love to spin off into a solo act at some point, but given the rarity of their own group promotions, it hardly seems likely.
updated with the singularity/kjh transfer.
after spending five years of her career trying to keep singularity from allowing her.oine to flop by doing anything she literally could to keep them in the headlines, up to and including making a fool of herself with overdone artsy bullshit posts on instagram and twitter, her hardwork is rewarded....with the abrupt closure of the company.
suran is numb, when the news comes. from the actual news, at that, since no one at singularity had the decency to alert them ahead of time. unsurprising considering the amount of embezzling that had been going on. disgusting.
the girls are in a state of panic for a few hours. a few days, when just as suddenly news comes to them from the company, this time. there’s been a buyout, that’s the first news. the second news is that that means all the girls are going along with the general company assets and resources. suran’s head reels.
starting from the bottom is demeaning. she hates it, hates the idea of debuting again. she hates that they’ve stolen their discography, that they’ll never be able to perform those songs, unless legal battles pan out well. she decides, however, that it’s better than disbanding. its better than dissolution. sure, the her.oine chapter has closed, but jawbreaker is off to a good start. something is better than nothing. if she has to beg her way through more demeaning schedules, grovel her way through more pointless interviews and bow ninety degrees to her hoobaes until her back breaks, she’ll do it. whatever it takes.
because they’re letting her into the studios over here at kjh. giving her a chance at the resources she needs. they’re putting them on varieties, getting them brand deals, putting them into their own vlive series. it’s everything they should have been doing all along. she’s exhausted and she’s frustrated and, okay, her pride is a little hurt. but for the chance at the solo she’s always wanted, the chance to perform with her girls, well, she’ll take it.
