hi. why is nobody talking about the porn ban in north carolina? the PAVE act is a bill that was passed back in september 2023 (came into law january 1st 2024) that effectively bans users from viewing websites hosting adult content without age verification. (link to the bill)
"-the act legally requires commercial ventures to verify users’ ages if a company “knowingly and intentionally publishes or distributes material harmful to minors on the internet from a website that contains a substantial portion of such material.”
In order to do so, North Carolina requires these sites to either use “a commercially available database that is regularly used by businesses or governmental entities for the purpose of age and identity verification,” or utilize “another commercially reasonable method of age and identity verification.” Companies are not allowed to hold records on any personally identifying information used to confirm users’ ages.
Additionally, North Carolina offers residents the right to a lawsuit if a site is found to record user identifying information, or if a minor’s parent or guardian finds that a website allowed their child to access a site purposefully hosting material “harmful to minors.”" obviously we don't want these websites having our IDs, but sites like e621 and pornhub just straight up aren't asking for them either- blocking their service to the state in it's entirety instead. even beyond the restriction of adult websites, obviously as the 'queerest place on the net' we can see how "material that is harmful to minors" is not just intentional vague wording, but a massive red flag. even if you dont care about the porn- which you should, this is a massive rights violation. how long until 'harmful material' is expanded to include transgender people? same-sex relationships? anything lgbtq? this is a serious fucking problem and it opens the door to hundreds of potentially worse bills that extrapolate on the same concept.
i have no idea what to do to fight it, but if someone smarter than me could add links to representatives or something, that would be awesome.

The year 2024 marks a decade since the landmark NALSA judgement that recognised the rights of transgender persons in India. But Delhi’s transgender community continues to face an uphill battle for basic recognition and access to essential services.
Bureaucratic red tape, insensitive verification processes and the absence of systemic accountability make it nearly impossible for many trans individuals to secure essential identity documents such as the transgender ID card, which is also a crucial document for accessing healthcare, employment, and education.
For activists like Pari, a trans woman working at Delhi’s Naz Foundation, the numbers are telling: out of the 75 people she has helped apply for certificates, only two have been successful. Her own reluctance to apply stems from the same fears that paralyse much of the community – an exhausting maze of paperwork, multiple office visits and the threat of family rejection.

BAD CALIFORNIAN INTERNET BILLS
While it is good that KOSA is now dead in the House (for now) I would like to ask for people's attention on AB1949 and SB976, which could push for Age verification by showing your ID.
There was a third bill named AB3080 that had similar goals, but luckily it received revisions so it is no longer a threat or require ID verification to access websites. So it would be possible to get AB1949 and SB976 to be revised so they aren't dangerous anymore.
You can read the text for AB1949 right here
AB1949 doesn't explicitly ask for ID verification anymore, as it used to, due to a revision, but there is a provision stating if they deem a website "willfully disregards" the age of the user they will be deemed to have actual knowledge of the user's age.
This broad part could be left to abuse, which is why it needs to be revised before passing, in order to confirm ID verification is not required. FIND YOUR REPS HERE!
For AB1949, you can find your Senate representative with the link above as I said, and check to see if they're a member of the CA Senate Appropriations Committee. Then call them to tell them you oppose this bill. Try to add reasons you think this bill would negatively affect California financially because that's what this committee focuses on.
As for SB976, which you can read here
Its goal is to "keep kids off social medias and addictive feeds" But the concerning part is that "it would make it unlawful for the operator of an addictive internet-based service or application, as defined, to provide an addictive feed to a user, unless the operator does not have actual knowledge that the user is a minor; commencing January 1, 2027, has reasonably determined that the user is not a minor; or has obtained verifiable parental consent to provide an addictive feed to the user who is a minor."
How are you supposed to know that you have "verifiable parental consent" without ID and age verification of both parents and child?Even then, holding the ID of a minor feels pretty illegal given how sensitive how an info this is, in case of a data breach (which will happen) this would endanger kids even more, and no one in general want to give their ID to access a website or an app.
The bill would also make it unlawful for a website or app to send notifications to a minor according to a certain timeframe.
For SB976, find your Assembly representative using the link below and check to see if they're a member of the CA Assembly Appropriations Committee. Then call them to tell them you oppose this bill. https://apro.assembly.ca.gov/members
You can tell them how this is terrible for privacy, and the safety of children, and that it would be terrible for the economy of California, as they seem to focus on it. You can try sending faxes for either bills, but calling IS MUCH MORE efficient. https://faxzero.com/

They increase danger without making anyone any safer and have even prompted attacks on cis and trans people alike. Many national health and anti-sexual assault organizations oppose these bills.
Old Bills:
West Virginia gave bill HB2006 a House floor reading last Friday.
West Virginia gave bill SB456 its third Senate floor reading last Friday.
Healthcare bills go against professional and scientific consensus that gender-affirming care saves lives. Denying access will cause harm.
Providers are faced with criminal charges, parents are threatened with child abuse charges, and intersex children are typically exempted.
New Bills:
Georgia introduced insurance bill HB660 last Friday and sent it to the House Insurance Committee.
Old Bills:
Rhode Island sent bill S0270 to the Senate Judiciary Committee last Friday.
Texas sent bills SB1257 and SB1188 to the Senate Health & Human Services Committee last Friday.
Wyoming laid bill HB0164 back last Friday. This bill is now probably dead.
Drag Bans restrict access for folks who are gender non-conforming in any way. 
They loosely define "drag" as any public performance with an “opposite gender expression,” as sexual in nature, and inappropriate for children. 
This also pushes trans individuals out of public spaces.

Wyoming bill HB0134 died on the Senate floor last Friday.
Montana passed bill HB675 through its committee last Friday and sent it to the House floor.
Educational Censorship and Student Suppression bills force schools to misgender or deadname students, ban instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity, and make schools alert parents if they suspect a child is trans.
They remove life-saving affirmation and support for trans youth.

Texas filed educational censorship bill HB3548 last Friday.
Old Bills:
Idaho passed bill H0239 through its committee last Friday and sent it to the House floor.
Kentucky returned bill HB4 to the House Postsecondary Education Committee last Friday.
West Virginia gave bill SB154 a Senate floor reading last Friday.
Wyoming failed bill HB0200 in committee last Friday. This means the bill has failed to progress by its cutoff date and is now probably dead.
Wyoming agreed on a final version for bill SF0103 in both chambers last Friday and sent it to the governor.
Montana scheduled bill SB299 for a second Senate floor reading today.

Georgia sent bill HB267 to the Senate Judiciary Committee last Friday.
Wyoming gave bill HB0032 its second Senate reading last Friday.
Montana bill SB437 has a hearing tomorrow, March 4, at 7:00 a.m. Mountain Time in Room 303 in the Senate Judiciary Committee.
Digital Censorship Bills describe any legislation that potentially targets Queer and Trans media/material for removal. 
They typically do this by using vague and broad definitions of "Obscene" or "Harmful to Minors" and then banning such content from being accessible to minors, which often either removes the material entirely or requires age verification methods in order to view. 
This includes online censorship bills, library book bans, and other such legislation.
Old Bills:
Wyoming gave bill HB0043 its second Senate reading last Friday.
Most sports bills force schools to designate teams by sex assigned at birth. 
They are often one-sided and ban trans girls from playing on teams consistent with their gender identity.
Some egregious bills even force invasive genital examinations on student athletes.
New Bills:
Rhode Island introduced sports bill H5842 last Friday and sent it to the House Education Committee.
Old Bills:
Indiana sent bill HB1041 to the Senate Education and Career Development Committee today.
These are other anti-trans bills that either fit multiple categories or stand on their own.
New Bills:
Arkansas introduced ‘religious freedom’ bill HB1615 last Thursday and sent it to the House Judiciary Committee. The bill is in a hearing as of this afternoon.
Texas filed child abuse/custody bill HB3478 last Thursday.
Florida has prefiled multiple bills as of today - at least eight, if not more.
Old Bills:
Missouri passed bill SB10 through its committee last Friday and sent it for its third House floor reading.
Utah sent bill HB0413 to the Senate Health and Human Services Committee last Friday.
Montana passed bills HB635, HB690, and HB638 through their committees last Friday and sent them to the House floor.
Montana gave bill HB446 its third House floor reading last Saturday.
