Christina in the ICU
Christina was recently moved to the ICU after she experienced a second cardiac arrest in the ER.  Abby was the lead doctor of the ICU and had come in to check on her newest patient.  The nurses were finishing putting in a catheter as she entered the room.  “Hi, I’m Dr. Abagail Newman but you can just call me Abby.  Youve had quite the traumatic past 24 hours. Two cardiac arrests, one while you were playing on the field.  I’m curious to find out what may be causing these to occur all of the sudden.  Have you been sick recently or changed anything in your diet?”  Abby asked.  “It’s been the same regimen since I started my professional career. “  Christina responded.  “Are you taking any medications that we should know about, to ensure we don’t give you something that may react wrong.”  Dr. Abby questioned.  “There’s still the doctor patient confidentiality right? You can’t tell anyone anything that I tell you?” Christina asked as she grew nervous.  “Well of course everything stays between you and the medical staff.”  Abby assured her.  “My athletic trainer started supplying me with a new steroid a couple days ago to counteract my knee that has been impeding my playing.”  Christina was concerned that Dr. Abby would judge her and tell everyone.  “We need to find out exactly what you’re on to find out if your heart is reacting with it.  It’s good that you told us or else something terrible might have happened.  I’m going to run some blood tests to see if there’s anything else we can find.  For now just rest and I’ll be back later.”  Dr. Abby left and ordered more blood tests as she began to worry that the steroids may have already mixed with medications they have been giving her.  
After reciving the results of the blood tests Abby stood at the nurses station to try and figure out what has caused her cardiac arrests.  As she was looking through a nurse came out of Christina’s room and asked for some help.  As Dr. Abby entered the nurse gave her an update on what was going on.  “She started complaining of tightness in the chest and trouble breathing.”  the nurse informed her.  “Christina I need you to try and take some deep breaths.” She put an oxygen mask over her face and tried to calm her down.  “Christina your heart is racing, we need to slow it down, breath in and out slowly.”  Christina only grew more paniced.  Suddenly Christina started having a seizure and foam was coming out of her mouth.  They tried to hold her down and put a blocker in her mouth to ensure she doesnt bite off her tongue.  They gave her meds that were supposed to help stop the seizure but nothing seemed to work.  She kept thrashing around the bed as her medical gown started to fall off and expose her breasts.  After a minute and 45 seconds the seizure stopped and all of Christina’s muscles released as she crashed on the bed and stared at the ceiling.  The monitor showed a still eratic heart rythm before slipping into another cardiac arrest.  “Lower the bed and start compressions” Abby pressed the code blue button above the bed.  “Code Blue ICU Room 4, Code Blue” the nurse threw off Christina’s gown revealing her entire nude body.  She placed her hands inbetween her breasts and gave hard and fast compressions.  Christina’s entire body was covered in sweat from the seizure.  The medical team could see the beads of sweat on her body and her hair was wet as well.  Dr. Abby removed the head of the bed and tilted her head back.  She removed the blocker from her mouth and stuck the laryngoscope into her mouth as she attempted to intubate her.  “Her chords are sealed shut, I need a Tracheotomy kit stat, hold compressions.”  She made an incision in her throat and pushed the tube through.  She checked for breath sounds and then secured the tube with a holder.  Compressions resumed as her breasts shook from side to side with each one.  After two minutes the reassesd and checked for any pulses.  The medical team checked her femoral, radial, and carotid arteries.  “No pulse doctor” the nurse exclaimed.  “Resume compressions and push an amp of epi.”  A male nurse took over compressions, his large hands covered most of her chest and caused her entire body to rock from side to side with each compression.  “V-fib on the monitor, give me the paddles and charge to 300.” the nurse squirted conductive gel on each of the paddles.  Abby rubbed them together as she waited for the unit to finish charging.  “Everyone clear, shocking” Christina reacted violently as the electricity coursed through her body.  The monitor continued in V-fib.  “Charge to 360, clear.” The medical team backed away as she put one paddle in between her breasts and the other below her left breast.  “Shocking.” Her body reacted harsher to the second shock as she crashed back down onto the bed.  Her eyes were still wide open which gave the entire team a strange feeling.  “Asystole, resume compressions, I need another Adrenalin.”  The team resumed compression as Abby injected another Adrenalin into her IV. Christina had now been without a pulse for 8 minutes and hopes started to drop of getting her back.  A shockable rhythm came back and another three shocks were delivered to her exposed body.  After the shocks Christina converted back to asystole and CPR was continued once again.  CPR was continued for another 5 minutes without any change. Suddenly her coach and athletic trainer came rushing into the room.  “Oh my god, what happened to her” they exclaimed as they saw her completely exposed body rocking with each compression.  “Get them out of here, we are still trying to save her.”  None of this made any sense to Abby, they were coding a 25 year old female who was in peak medical condition.  The only thing that caused this all to happen were the steroids that she was given.  Now she was inching closer to death with every second of not having a heart rhythm.  Finally the monitors showed V-fib.  “Alright lets shock her, we are running out of options.”  She took the paddles in her hand as more gel was applied.  “All clear.” the ambu bag was detached as everyone backed away. “Shocking.” Christina flew of the bed as her back ached and her toes crunched together.  “Again shocking!”  again her body contracted as her hands made a loose fist from the defibrillation.   She crashed back down on the bed as her head lobbed to the side.  “Come on girl, don’t give up on us yet.”  The monitor showed a V-fib pattern as Dr. Abby prepared for another shock.  Time seemed to slow down as CPR was continued and she looked down at her patient as the entire team tried to save her.  “Come on girl, come back to us.”  The crash cart sounded off indicating the paddles were charged.  The team stepped back, she placed the paddles on her chest again.  As she pressed the two orange buttons her back propelled her chest into the air and her head flew back.  As Christina came crashing back down onto the her bed her entire body shook.  The entire team stared at the monitors hoping for something to happen.  And something did happen, the green line flat-lined across the screen as the piercing alarm filled the room.  A nurse began compressions again.  Abby looked up and down her patient “Does anyone have any ideas at this point?”  the room was quiet as two nurses continued working on Christina one giving compressions the other using the ambu bag.  “She has been down for a total of 26 minutes.  This is her third full cardiac arrest in the past 24 hours.  We have maxed out on epi and adrenalin.  We have given continuous compressions and shocked her multiple times.  Does anyone object to calling this code?”  Once again all that could be heard was the monitors alarm and the wheezing of the ambu bag.  “Time of Death 7:48 PM. Thank you everyone for your help.”  The nurse slowly lifted her hands away from Christinas chest.  The other nurse detached the ambu bag and placed it next to her head.  The tube was still protruding from her neck.  Most of the team left the room as a nurse and Abby stayed back to clean up the code.  Abby wiped off the gel from between her breasts and detached the leads.  She took out the catheter that had only been inserted 3 hours ago.  Finally she shut Christina’s eyes and placed a toe tag on her big toe. The nurse helped her drape a white cloth over her sweaty and lifeless body.  They shut out the lights as they left the room.
Soon Christina would be transported to the hospital morgue before a funeral home picks up her body.  Due to the death of Christina Dr. Abby told the police what had happened and Christina’s athletic trainer was arrested for supplying illegal steroids.

Tragic Night
This is my first resus story that I never posted, not the best but its a start.  More to come, Enjoy!
Dave and Sara worked as paramedics and had been partners for 5 years.  One of their toughest calls came on a cold night in the middle of winter.  "Ambulance 16 to Highway 66 near exit 12, MVA with multiple passengers." They both jumped up and the ambulance was on it's way in the blink of an eye. As they got closer the highway was lit up with emergency lights.  They jumped out as Sara grabbed the medical bag. The Fire captain was coordinating the scene. "I have my men working on the trapped passengers in the car. One female was ejected, tend to her first."  They both rushed over and saw there wasn't still two females and one male no older than 25 stuck in the car.
Patient #1
Sara looked around and found the female who was ejected.  "Grab a neck brace and then we'll roll her over."  Dave placed the backboard on the ground and secured the neck brace around her neck.  "Ready 1 2 3 roll. Let's get her hooked up to the monitor."  Sara grabbed the shears from her pocket and cut the 21 year old's shirt right up the middle, then she cut down each leg to remove her pants. In a matter of seconds she was exposed to just her bra, panties, and Ugg boots.  She was covered in blood and was unconscious. Dave attached the electrodes to her chest and turned on the monitor.  "Her pulse is weak, not sure how long it will keep going. Let's get some fluids in her." They placed an IV in her left arm and started the fluids.  "She's going into v-fib, start compressions, I'll charge the AED."  Sara cut away the young woman's bra and placed her hands in between her breasts and pushed down hard and fast.  Dave attached the AED pads to her bare chest "charging to 200, stand clear, shocking." Her body reacted violently as the electricity coursed through her body. "No change resume CPR"  Sara injected adrenaline into the IV and then resumed CPR. With each compression her lean body rocked and her petite breasts jiggled side to side.  She was a very fit and tan young woman who appeared to be in perfect health before the accident.  "Charging to 300 all clear, shocking!" Her body again jumped off the board and came crashing back down causing her breasts to bounce.  "Asysotlye, I'm going to intubate."  He slid the long metal blade into her mouth and then stuck the tube down her throat. After attaching the ambu bag he listened to make sure it was delivering breaths. "I'll take over compressions" Dave said as he moved down next to her torso and began CPR.  Sara injected another round of meds and squeezed the bag twice after every 30 compressions.  After 3 minutes the monitor showed V-Fib again so they charged to 360.  "All clear, shocking" she came crashing down again as the monitor stayed in V-Fib.  "Charge again and 360, clear" her back arched and her chest came crashing down again.  They stared at the monitor hoping for a change.  The green line flattened and the alarm rang out showing Asysotlye. "How long has she been down?" Dave asked, "Eleven minutes" she replied.  "Let's call it, time of death 1:35 am".  They detached the equipment and covered her nude body with a sheet.  They paused for a second before being interrupted by a fireman calling out "We got one of them out, she's in really bad condition." They left the young woman under the sheet and jumped back into action hoping to save their next patient.
The Ambulance Ride:
As they approached the firemen already had the woman on a backboard and in a neck brace. "This is Susan, she's 22, has a broken leg protruding from her skin, possible head injury, she was in the back of the car, we're still getting the other two."  They took over and hooked her up to the EKG and put in an IV.  "Is Carol okay, please she flew out of the car, where's Carol?" pleaded Susan.  "Let's just focus on you" Dave said.  "Let's get her in the rig and we'll stabilize her in there."  They put the backboard on a gurney and rushed her into the back of the ambulance.  Sara proceeds to cut off Susan's jacket that says University Cheer on it. After cutting off all her clothing Susan lays in just her bra and panties, Sara takes off her shoes exposing her small feet.  "You're a cheerleader?" Asked Sara trying to calm Susan down.  "We all are, we were heading back to campus from a party when we ran into the barrier".  Susan was only 5 foot and had medium sized breasts and a six pack.  Sara put a bandage on her head where there was a large gash. "We got the male out, the driver is DOA, we'll load him up and you can transport them to the hospital." Sara nodded as they put the 22 year old 5 foot 10 male cheerleader on a backboard on the bench of the ambulance.  "Let's get these two out of here" Sara said as Dave got in the drivers seat and drove away.  5 minutes into the journey Susan's vitals started falling as she slipped unconscious.  "Her O2 stats are falling im going to intubate her." She slipped the scope into her mouth and put the tube down her throat and secured it with a blue holder that wrapped around her neck.  She began ventilating her in attempt to bring her vitals back up.  Her vitals began to stabilize as she put her on a respirator so she could tend to her other patient.  He was a 6 foot well built African American male.  She cut away his jacket and shirt, revealing his toned torso.  She cut off his pants leaving him in only boxers and a neck brace.  She began placing leads on his torso as the monitor whined to life.  Finally both patients were stable as she took a deep breath.  Before she knew it they arrived at the hospital and the doors flew open.  "22 year old female with laceration to her head and exposed leg injury, lost consciousness 5 minutes ago."  The doctors rushed her into the first trauma room and began tending to her.  "21 year old male, laceration to the abdominal and potential spinal injury." Both of the patients were now in the trauma rooms and receiving personalized attention/
Susan:
“Ready one, two, three lift.  Let’s get the rest of her clothing removed and hook her up to our monitors. Run a blood test, and get two units of O-neg in here.” The male doctor began to palpitate her abdominal, he then took his stethoscope and listened to her heart and lungs.  “Lets get a scan in here, eels like she has internal bleeding.”  They all backed away as X-rays and scans were taken of her entire body.  “I need an OR consult down here asap.” As he continued giving off orders to his team the monitors started sowing erratic heart rhythms that quickly led to a full arrest.  “Code Blue Trauma 1″ the PA system announced. “Someone start compressions and get some epinephrine in now.”  A nurse placed her hands in between her breasts and started pounding away. After every 30 compressions another nurse gave two ambu bag squeezes.  After two minutes passed they all reassessed one nurse placed her fingers right on her femoral artery as another checked her carotid artery.  “Still no pulse, resume compressions”  Another nurse took over compressions, each time her entire body shook, her head only stayed in place due to the neck brace.  “V-fib” a nurse placed two orange pads on her chest “Charge to 300, Clear!”  Her backed arched off the bed before crashing back down.  “No change, charge to 360.”  The defib unit charged as compressions continued.  “Clear” another shock coursed through her body as her back lifted off the bed once again.  Her entire body contracted before crashing back down and shaking due to the impact.  The monitors returned to asysotlye as a sharp alarm rang out.  “Resume compressions and push more med please.”  Susan had now been down for 14 minutes and shocked 8 times.  They checked for a pulse again as the lead doctor shined a light in her eyes. “Pupils fixed and dilated, shes been down for almost 15 minutes and has no pulses or signs of life.  Does anyone object to calling this code?”  The entire room was silent other than the alarm from the monitors.  The doctor looked down and her battered body “Time of death, 2:42 AM, thank you all for your help.”  He left the room as two nurses stayed back to clean her up.  They removed all of the wires and turned off the monitors.  Another nurse removed her socks and wrote out her toe tag before placing it on her small right foot.  Finally they placed a white sheet over her covering her body.
Franklin:
Franklin was the last patient from the crash and was found to have a complete spinal fracture.  He spent three days in the ICU and then went through a life of therapy without being able to walk again.  He advocated for driving safety as he told his story of losing three of his best friends and never being able to walk.

Most new grads will struggle with everything from the format of their resume through to just what information they truly need to cover to impress nurse recruiters. This can make the task of writing that attention grabbing and effective resume very difficult. What Is the Future Outlook for Nursing Employment?
It is expected that there will be a 20% increase in demand for RNs over the next several years with the educational system in the US unable to keep pace with what is required. This is giving very low unemployment rates of around just 2.5%. While this may mean that employers will be struggling to fill positions it will still mean high competition for better nursing positions and competition for those offering better salaries and conditions.
There are roughly 4 times as many RNs as there are physicians in the US healthcare system, with more than 3 million employed . Most now graduate through college and university with a bachelor’s degree in nursing rather than using diploma programs. There is a huge amount of information out there from Careerealism on resumes to many other sites that will provide you with often contradictory information about how you should organize and write your resume. However, we will try to provide you with clear reasons for our advice so that you can understand why we suggest what we do for your resume. It is often worth looking at all of the different advice that you can see so that you will be able to get the best idea for your own writing.
When it comes to new grad RN resume tips let us first start with how your resume should be organized and what sections should be covered. The main sections that you should include as a part of your resume are the following:
Summary
Licenses and your certifications
Education
Clinical Rotations
These headings for your resume all contain information that you will be able to provide in some for or another. As such these should be the main parts of your resume following on after your personal details which you should put at the top of the resume. The following sections can also be included if you have something relevant to write within them:

Languages
Some would argue that you should place your work history in your resume prior to your education and clinical rotations. However if you are writing a new grad RN resume with no experience to speak of this may be difficult. Rather than listing summer jobs or other barely relevant work experience it may be far better to be totally up front to the recruiter with the fact that you are a new grad.
If the recruiter is not up for hiring someone that has no experience then they will overlook your application anyway. If they are up for hiring a new grad but you put your barely relevant work experience first they may never get to your newly qualified status. After all you are not going to get any real RN experience until you have actually graduated from an accredited nursing program, passed the NCLEX and gained your RN license. It is always best to clearly show that you are newly qualified to the recruiter right from the start. It may even work in your favor if they are favorable to someone that is recently qualified.
You may also want to change the order of those first sections if you have for instance not yet gained your licenses. You may wish to drop this section further down the page so that the recruiter gets to see all of your other excellent information first.
What to Put in the Different Sections of Your Resume
The Summary
Some people may suggest that you actually start with a new grad RN resume objective section rather than a summary. But as the Forbes tips on resume summary statement writing and many others will tell you is that the objective statement is often a big mistake. It is outdated and most recruiters would look at it as if you are telling them what you want rather than telling them why they should be hiring you. You need to sell yourself to the recruiter by summarizing the main reasons as to why you are the right person for the job. Not tell them what you want in a job. This is why you should include a new grad RN resume summary.
Your resume will likely only get quickly scanned by the recruiter. It is therefore important that you make your summary stand out. You should always include the following in your summary:
State that you are newly graduated and where from
Outline your clinical rotations that are relevant to the job you are applying to
Highlight any other relevant skills to the post such as computer skills or a second language
So a simple summary may be:
“Recently graduated (2018) from a 4 year Nursing degree through the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in the top 10% of my class. Rotations included pediatrics and oncology. I also speak Spanish with native level fluency.”
Your License and Certification
Provide the recruiter with all of the information that they will need to know which certifications and licenses you have. This should cover everything from AOCN certification to your RN license. This information should be provided with the following:
The full name of the certification or license
The issuing body
If applicable the expiration date of the license
The certification number
If it is part of the Nursing Licensure Compact indicate it as such
Some nurses completing the section for their licenses worry about giving their license numbers. They should not however worry as this information is freely available to the public on the state licensing board’s website for all to see. But the information is required for the hiring manager or recruiter to be able to verify your licensing.
Education Section
You should include all of the nursing schools or colleges that you attended when gaining your degree. There is no need to include your high school results. It is recommended to provide the following information as a minimum:
Full name of the institutions that you attended
City and the state where they are located
The dates between which you attended
The final degree that you achieved.
In addition there are several other things that you may wish to add within the education section of your resume:
GPA: Include if you have a particularly good score, otherwise it is better to leave it out.
HESI or ATI scores: if the recruiter has shown an interest in them or if they are mentioned in the job description in any way.
Relevant coursework and the grades that you received: this should only be considered if you have received A grades for the coursework.
Honors and awards: if you do not want to provide these in a separate section of their own they could be listed here.
Remember, do not include any information that is simply not relevant to the job that you are applying to simply to pad out your resume and make it look more impressive. It will not! Irrelevant information just serves to distract the recruiter from the information that they are looking for.
The Clinical Rotations
Again these are a very important part of your resume if you are to give the recruiter a good idea of the specific experience that you have gained during your education. Many universities will expect that you list them when you apply to their residency programs. The minimum information that you include for the rotations should cover the following:
Whether it was a clinical rotation, senior preceptorship, or another form of rotation
The starting and end date for the rotation
The number of hours that were worked for the rotation
The name of the hospital or institution in which the rotation was performed
The city and state
The name of the department in which you undertook your rotation (L&D Labor and Delivery, MS Medical Surgical Unit, ICU Intensive Care Unit, etc.)
When it comes to listing the unit name do not simply list the name that it is known by in the hospital. Give the type of unit and the type of patients that it contains so that the reader will understand the type of patients that you have been caring for.
The following information can also be included as it will give the reader a more thorough understanding of what you have been exposed to during your rotations:
Describe the facility type: such as “acute care hospital”, “children’s hospital” or “Long term care facility”.
The number of beds within the facility in which you undertook your rotations
Provide the trauma designation if applicable to the facility
Whether or not the facility is a teaching hospital
The number of beds within the unit in which you were assigned
The units trauma designation if applicable
The range of ages that were cared for within the unit in which you were assigned
The ratio of nurses to patients
The form of charting system that was employed
The EMR/HER with whom you gained your experience
The grades that you gained: provide this if you received an “A”
These technical details will allow the recruiter to see just what experience you have been exposed to during your rotations. These details are far more effective at communicating the experience than trying to describe it. It will also demonstrate to anyone reading that you also understand the importance of this information.
You also have many other opportunities here to sell yourself through the experience that you have during your rotations. If you have developed specific skills during these rotations such as empathy or compassion hen mention them. Make sure however that you provide clear examples of your use of those skills, don’t just simply claim that you developed them without backing up the statements.
You should also look at other things that may have been going on within the unit that you worked within. Was it trying to get approved for some form of certification, where they introducing new systems or software? All of these things can boost your employability, especially if the job you are applying to is in the process of going through something similar.
Work History
This should be used with care, especially if you have had several short jobs during your studies. You do not want to look like someone that jumps from job to job every 5 minutes. Employers are looking for someone that is going to be stable in their employment.
It is unlikely that you will have any real RN experience as you will only be able to be licensed once you have graduated. You need to ensure that your experience that you mention can be related to the type of work that you are to undertake as a nurse. If you have healthcare experience then that is fine, if however your work is in fields other than healthcare you need to relate it to what you have been doing. This may include covering the skills that you developed with your employment which could cover things such as team working, time management, or communication.
If you have no relevant working experience or are unable to relate the skills that you developed to your nursing career then it is fine to omit this section completely as a new graduate. You will have already stated that you are new grad in your summary so the recruiter will not be expecting a length experience section.
Affiliations
If you have joined the American Association of Critical Care Nurses or any other organization that is relevant to your work then this is the place to highlight it. Being a member of these organizations demonstrates a commitment to your profession as well as an intention to keep up to date with developments in your role. You should mention all of the following details when listing your affiliations:
The name of the organization that you have joined
When you joined them
The title or designation that you hold
Any duties or seat that you hold
Any conferences or other events that you have attended as a member
Volunteering
Many students undertake volunteer roles to widen their experiences as well as to help their local communities. Whether you have volunteered at a healthcare facility, charity or anything else you should be able to highlight the skills that you have developed in much the same way as you would with work experience. Volunteering also demonstrates things such as your compassion and dedication. The following information should be provided with your volunteering:
The name of the organization that you supported
The time when you volunteered
The number of hours you dedicated for your support
Your duties and responsibilities: if possible details the results of what you achieved
Any recognition or awards that you may have received
Awards and Honors
If you have been given any form of special recognition then you may wish to highlight it within your resume. This can be done within the specific section that it relates to such as your education or within a standalone section such as this if you want to give it special emphasis. Ensure that anything that you highlight however is relevant to the role to which you are applying. You should ensure that you spell out the reason for the award and its significance rather than just giving the name of the award and the body that gave it to you.
Skills
Unless you have highly developed skills that you have gained proficiency with during healthcare related work experience then this section is usually missed out. If you have only done something a few times within your rotations then you cannot claim full proficiency within it, you are still developing those skills. For those that have completed health related work experience and gained certification and additional training in certain areas such as crisis management or phlebotomy then this section can be an excellent way to show off specific skills that may be sought by the job that you are applying to. Again be guided by the job that you are applying to. If they are seeking specific skill sets and you have real experience then it is worth providing them within this section.
Language Proficiency
Being bilingual is an excellent skill to have within many professions, especially within nursing. Many hospitals deal with communities that speak languages other than English and as such your language skills may be a unique selling point to help you get the job that you are seeking. It is therefore very worthwhile showing the languages that you speak within a section dedicated to them specifically. This is especially true if you know that the job you are applying to have a need to interact with many different community groups.
