Steps for Creating a Knockout Nursing Personal Statement for Residency
Writing a nursing personal statement for residency can be extremely daunting. Going about the application stage can be cumbersome considering the numerous applicants vying for the same spot in the institution. For most medical students who are not versed in language arts, intimidation sets in even before the one on one interview with the committee. The thought of writing a personal statement for nursing that will guarantee you an interview becomes something that sets you on the edge.
What’s more, having to write about oneself can become a big issue. You may be wondering what the program directors are really looking for in a nursing residency personal statement, particularly with the vast number of people hoping to get into ERAS®.
Admission and Your Personal Statement for Nursing
When it concerns your admission requirement and personal statement for nursing it takes a lot to stand out of a crowd.  Of the 43,000 registered candidates with the National Residency Match Program (NRMP®) and the limited number allocated to each specialty, it is very important that the first sentence or the introduction of your personal statement is very catchy. It should be well writing to the point that it can be spellbound to the reader. So in writing an overview of your qualities, show in a descriptive manner an experience that demonstrates your compassion. Leave a lasting impression by ending with a strong conclusion.
Also, give a detailed explanation of your life experiences stating your extracurricular activities, hobbies and relevant things not already in your CV. Do not forget to state the reason you are interested in your specialty as well as what you are looking for in the nursing residency program.
How to Go About Writing Your Nursing Personal Statement for Residency
Make your personal statement unique
Make your personality shine through. Show your depth and humor in your own words. Don’t try to weep up sentiments about some things that have happened in your life. Tell your story in the most interesting way possible.
Have more than one personal statement
It is okay to have various versions of your personal statement. You don’t necessarily have to write a new one; just tailor the one you have to fit a specialty. Uploading multiple versions of your personal statement onto ERAS® is permissible. Just upload the correct one for each program and double check your work.
Start writing early
The earlier the better. Don’t even wait for ERAS®, just start so you can be among the first sets of applicants to turn in your nursing personal statement for residency. It says a lot about your personality.
Be conscious of the don’ts
Be aware of the things that must be avoided when writing your personal statement. For one, avoid controversial topics such as political statements and religious issues. You can state your membership in these bodies, but don’t go beyond that. Don’t state any form of anger issues or bitterness about anything in your life. Be optimistic and positive.
Your statement should not be generic
Be sure that what you are writing does not look like what someone else will write or has written. Avoid the use of clichés and quotations like the generality of applicants do.
Be authentic
Be original in your write up. It must be personal just like the title states. It should reflect you, but avoid the use of I, particularly at the beginning of a paragraph.
Get help if necessary
You can use the help of anyone who is familiar with what you are writing to guide and edit your PS when you are done.
Common Mistakes to Avoid when Writing Your Nursing Application Personal Statement
Not answering questions
Ignoring rules
Apologizing for/making excuses for not having any experience
Telling a sob story
Including your GPA
Assuming all the schools want the same thing
Digression from traditional format for the nursing application personal statement.
Lies or irrelevant details
Negativity
Spelling errors and typos
There is no stopping you from getting the help you deserve to write the personal statement for nursing. The main goal is to get enlisted for an interview with the possibility of being admitted.
Create a knockout nursing personal statement for residency and boost your chances of getting into the desired program!

The Importance of Your Professional Registered Nurse Resume
Getting employed as a Registered Nurse is not easy. No matter where you apply, you are likely to face a significant amount of competition. This means that you will need to ensure that your resume is capable of making you stand out. Our RN resume tips and registered nurse CV sample can help you to make sure that your application will help you to get chosen for an interview.
Employment for registered nurses is growing at a much faster than average rate than other professions with 15% more places expected to be available in the next 10 years or so. Average salaries are around $68,450 per year making this profession an attractive one to work in even with its many demands.
This article will run through everything that you will need to ensure that you can create a registered nurse resume that is going to help you to gain an interview. The resume is not there to get you the job, its purpose is only to get the attention of the recruiter and to demonstrate that you meet their requirements for the position as they specified it. Well written it should be able to make the perfect first impression and get them to invite you to interview.

22 Questions to Consider When Writing the Perfect Resume
Our professional registered nurse CV tips can help you to ensure that you will write an impressive resume for your application. We will provide you with a list of questions that you should be considering as you work your way through the process of writing that perfect resume. You must remember as you progress that what you are trying to do through writing your resume is to write something that is going to market you effectively and consistently.
The following are the stages that you need to work your way through:
Do the Initial Research
You need to know what your potential employer really wants in a registered nurse. This will mean doing some homework of your own to see exactly what they are asking for. It is not enough to just simply list your qualifications and the responsibilities that you have in your current job. That is unlikely to get you noticed at all. Recruiters tend to receive scores, if not hundreds, of resumes for jobs that they advertise. So if you want to match your resume to what they are looking for and be one of the few that gets short listed for an interview you need to think about what they really want.
Who is the employer? While this may seem like an obvious question not every job states who the actual employer is, often only the recruiter. If you can you should try to find out who the actual final employer is. With the internet this can be fairly simple as they will often have the same advert on the institutions website.
What is the culture of the company: are they a fast paced research institution that is trying out lots of new techniques? Do they work in deprived areas and look for nurses with high levels of compassion and patience? You need to look at their culture and what they say they value in employees.
What problems are they facing? If the hospital is looking to introduce new certifications or has specific problems that you have experience with then you have found something straight away that provides you with extra hooks for your resume.
What are they actually asking for? Take a look at the job advert and everything else that they have to see exactly what they want. How do you match those expectations? What skills and other qualities do you possess that they want to see?
What does their website say? Don’t just stick to looking at the job advert. Look at the website to understand what they look for in staff.
What do they tweet about? Twitter can be a gold mine of information about what is going on within an organization.
Do they use Instagram or Facebook? Again photos that they share either as an organization or by individuals in the organization reflects a huge amount on the culture of the organization and what is going on there.
Do they have a LinkedIn profile? Who do you know? You can learn a huge amount from what they and the employees post through LinkedIn. Joining groups and participating can also get your name known by people that are there.
All of the above information tells you about what they are really looking for in an employee. You should always carefully tailor your resume so that it matches what they are looking for. If you are looking to write a “generic” resume that will match the large percentage of jobs that you might target and to use for your LinkedIn profile you should check out 2 or 3 companies that you might want to work for to develop your resume. Of course for a specific application you should always tailor your resume to reflect their exact expectations.
Formatting
The next section that we will concentrate on is the formatting of your resume and how to decide on your layout.
Look at some samples: there are hundreds of samples of resumes for nurses online. You should look critically at some of them and see what takes your fancy. You should ask yourself what is it about them that makes them stand out.
How long are they? Typically a nursing resume will be just one or two pages in length. Any more than this and you can be pretty sure that the recruiter simply will not spare the time to read it.
What format of resume should you follow: this is not as simple to decide as most would hope. In reality there are just three formats that you should be considering:
Reverse Chronological: this style of resume will list your career history starting with your current role and moving back in time. This particular style of resume is good for new graduates, nurses with only 5 or less roles in the last several years, those that are applying to a similar role, or those that simply want to show progression within their chosen career. This will have a layout  that will typically look like this:
Contact Info
Summary
iii. Work History
Education
Certifications
Functional Layout: this layout will place the emphasis on the skills that you have rather than the progression of your employment. It is often used by those that have gaps in their employment or who are moving into a new career. This style is rarely recommended for nursing professionals. The layout will typically follow this:
Contact Info
Summary
iii. Skills
Work history
Education
Combination layout: this style of resume places emphasis on both skills and work history. It is recommended for those professionals that have experience in many specialty areas, those that are looking for a new career or a new specialty, those that have multiple gaps in their employment. The layout will look like:
Contact Info
Profile / summary
iii. Work experience
Education
Get your page formatting right: understand just how your page should be laid out:
Margins 1” top and bottom with at least 0.63” each side
   Align text to the left
Select an easy to read font: suggested Arial or Times New Roman in at least 11pt
Stick to black text throughout without any special formatting
Do not use any special characters in your resume
Do not decorate your resume in any way
Writing for the Robots
More than 75% of recruiters employ an Applicant Tracking Software program. These systems are used to review resumes automatically to ensure that you meet their basic requirements. If the software judges that you don’t meet the requirements then it will not get passed to the human recruiter reducing their work load. That being said these systems are programmed by the recruiters so you can work to ensure that you pass them:
What keywords are you using? Typically the recruiter will get the ATS to look for specific keywords within your resume. If your resume lacks those keywords in the right places then your score will be lower or your resume will be rejected. Always use the same language in your resume as they use in the job advert. So if they use your job title in a slightly different way reflect that in your resume.
What formatting have you used? Not every ATS system is as smart as the next. If you use extra formatting, include special characters, or even add a photograph your resume may confuse the system and it will simply get rejected.
How is your resume structured: giving your section headings unusual names or altering the structure away from the norm can again upset the system. So always follow the structure that we will discuss in the following section.
What Sections Should You Use?
The following will run through the different sections that you will need to cover within your resume:
How should you list your contact information? The following will provide you with the information that you should provide in your contact information at the top of the page:
Name at the very top in an 18 – 22 pt font
   City and State
Phone number: include land and mobile
Email address: always avoid inappropriate addresses
    LinkedIn profile
What should your summary cover? Your summary is there to introduce your resume for registered nurse position. It should be an objective statement as some suggest but a summary of what you have to offer in the role. Typically this will mean that you should cover all of the following:
The number of years you have worked in your specialty area
The type of facility in which you are working
Your supervisory experience and how many people work under you
Any special awards or certificates that are relevant
Any specific language or other skills that are relevant to the application
What should be included within your skills section? Within your nursing skills list you should be very much guided by what they are requesting within the job advert. Do not just regurgitate a registered nurse skills list for resume that you find online. You should ensure that if they mention a skill that they are looking for that you reflect it within the skills section of your resume using the same terms that they use. Don’t use acronyms without also spelling them out fully.
What should be covered in your licenses section? You should fully list the licenses that you hold for nursing. The information should cover the full name of the license and the issuing body. You should also include the license number and its expiration date. This allows the recruiter to see straight away that you are ready for work and that they don’t have to waste a lot of time looking for your license number to check it.
What should be covered in your certifications? List all relevant and requested certifications in this section of your resume in much the same way as you would your licenses. Do not however just list BLS or CNA programs. Spell them out fully or you may not get past the ATS. Your nursing credentials and certifications should also highlight the issuing body such as the American Nurses Association.
How should you write your Work history? Always start with your most recent employment and work backwards. The resume should show your job title and specialty, the unit that you are working in as well as the name of the institution and the dates you were employed between. This should be followed by a bullet list of no more than 6-8 points which should cover:
Primary duties: be specific as to what the duty is
Any noteworthy accomplishments during your employment
    Any significant achievements
Do not simply repeat your job description for registered nurse resume writing.
How should you cover your education? If you have a bachelors degree as well as an associate degree in nursing it may be best to exclude the associate degree from your list. The reason being that some recruiters will tell the ATS to exclude anyone with an associate degree. You should give however full details of the degrees and other relevant training that you have gained. Years gained and the schools/universities in which you gained them.
100 Keywords to Use in Your Registered Nurse Resume
As mentioned a few times during this article, the words that you use within your writing can decide whether your resume will pass through the automated check as well as impressing the recruiter. While you should always mirror the language used in the job advert but you can also consider this top 100 list of keywords for nursing resumes:
Evaluated Reacted Mature Inventive Executed Attentive Reported Balanced Contributed Motivated Adhered Explained Responded friendly Empathy Independent Knowledgeable Administered Persistent Applied Tenacious Scheduled Compassionate Critical thinking Followed Assessed Broad-minded Honest Decided Maternal care Unique Shared Certifications Teamwork Committed Helped Data Management Assisted Supervised responsible Consistent Hard working Led Documentation Built qualified Collaborated Injections Sociable Listened Discharge Managed Treated Measured Objective Communicated professional Patient Kindness Taught resourceful Negotiated Cheerful Observed Rehabilitation observation Assertive Adaptability delegated Tracked Delivered Performed Practical Unconventional Coaching Patient assessment Creative Demonstrated Trained Developed Directed Planned Traditional Direct Surgical reliable realistic Dynamic proactive trustworthy Updated Preserved Displayed productive Educated Ensured Eclectic Provided Wrote Assertive
10 Common RN Resume Mistakes That You Must Avoid
The following are 10 mistakes that you should avoid at all costs within your resume:
Don’t include your age: while ageism may be illegal it still does not stop recruiters being influenced.
Don’t include your salary: this can be seen as too high or too low and get you rejected without any discussion.
Don’t include overly personal information: there is no reason to include your marital status, religion or any other personal information.
Never use a nickname within your resume instead of your own name.
Don’t fail to target the job with your resume: always tailor the resume to the job your are applying to.
Never place information in the page header or footer: the ATS may not see information that is placed in those areas of the page.
Don’t use email addresses that are unprofessional. Have something that clearly reflects your name and professional in a formal manner.
Don’t simply regurgitate your job description within your work history.
Don’t use “I” throughout your resume.
Don’t let typos slip through: always carefully proofread your work.
How to Go About Your Job Seeking
The following are some simple tips to help you with undertaking your job seeking:
Know what you really want: don’t simply apply to every job that you see. Identify the role that you want and do your research to find the right jobs for you.
Don’t apply for jobs that you do not have the right qualifications for. Your resume will be thrown out by the ATS before it even gets seen by the recruiter if you do not meet the main requirements.
Get the location right for you: if you are not prepared to move for work you need to be clear as what a comfortable commute would be and limit your search within that radius.
Do your homework and always tailor your resume accordingly.
Use a good nursing cover letter template so that you can include a well written and targeted cover letter with your application.
Don’t give up: many recruiters will not get back to you at all and others may take forever. Keep working at your job hunting and, eventually, you will be successful if you follow all of our advice.
Social Media and Your RN Job Hunt
Most recruiters today will check your social media so it is always important to ensure that your resume and LinkedIn profile match as well as other online information. Not only that, it is important to understand that networking can have a significant impact on your chances of landing a job. Especially those that never even get advertised.

Nurse Practitioner Resume Tips: Beginner Employment Info
Nurse Practitioner Resume Guidelines and Job Prospects
A nurse practitioner is far more than just a nurse, they are able to provide treatment while not working under the direct supervision of a doctor as most other nursing professionals have to. However, finding the right job after you have got your NP qualifications and CBCN certification or other specialist qualifications can be hard. This is why you may need our nurse practitioner resume tips to help you with your job hunting.
You also need to be aware that licensing and work practices do vary from state to state and you should investigate what you can and cannot do within the different states. While a nurse practitioner can prescribe drugs within all 50 states not every state provides full privileges and within some states such as CA or NY they are on restricted or reduced practice.
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in the US the average wage for a Nurse Practitioner is $107,460 making this an attractive area in which to work. It is also a very fast growing area with the number of jobs expected to grow by a whopping 31% in the next 10 years. However employers are always going to be looking for staff that are both qualified and proven at what they do.
Most nurse practitioners (55%) work as FNP Family Nurse Practitioners with various other specializations and sub-specializations available. After FNP the next most popular specializations are Adult/Adult-Gerontology NPs (21%), Acute Care NPs (7.7%), and Pediatric NPs (6.4%). Licensing and other requirements vary considerably from state to state so it is important to check the specific expectations and requirements before you apply to any state.
Follow My Nurse Practitioner Resume Tips
Getting the structure of your nurse practitioner resume right and writing it in a way that is going to impress the recruiter is vital if you are to get the invite you are looking for to interview. This can be very difficult even for experienced nurses. Recruiters are not going to spend hours reviewing your resume for information to try and match their expectations. They may have dozens of resumes to review and they are simply going to scan your application if they do not see precisely what they are looking for in that quick look your resume is going to be discarded quickly to make their job easier.
Our tips for nurse practitioner resume writing, however, can help you to make your resume more effective. So where do you start with your resume? Follow the information that we provide for writing your resume with regards to the nurse practitioner resume sections detailed here:
Summary:
Some will tell you to start with a nurse practitioner resume objective. The problem with this is that it is centered on what you are looking for and not what you have to offer the position that you are applying to. The purpose of your resume is to show that you meet their expectations so that you will be called to interview. This means selling you to them. This is a piece of marketing material and should not be telling them what you want but what you offer them.
Your summary should provide them with a concise overview of why you are and what you have to offer them. This does not mean that you should write war and peace covering all of your best points. Avoid a lengthy paragraph as this will simply not be read by any recruiter that is in a hurry. Write a few sentences and include bullet points if there are several points that you wish to make. Typical things to cover within your summary would be:
Your current role and number of years experience as a nurse practitioner
Your area of specialization and sub-specialization if you have one
Specific nursing related skills or achievements that you wish to highlight
Additional skills that may be relevant to the job such as a second language
Your Licenses and Certifications
This is very important part of your resume as the recruiter will be looking to see that you are ready to get to work. With different states having different requirements it is always best for you to check the specific requirements prior to making your application. While some recruiters will clearly state their licensing expectations some will not. So do your homework and ensure that you have everything covered.
When you cover your licenses and certificates ensure that you cover all of the following:
The complete name of the license or certificate
The issuing body
Expiration date if there is one
License number
Don’t worry about including your license number as these are made publicly available anyway. Ensure that you list the licenses in their order of importance to the job that you are applying to so that the recruiter will see the most important things to them first rather than having to look for what they want to see.
Skills
As you go through your career you will pick up many skills that are relevant to your job from looking after a central line to drawing blood. It is always best to include a skills list where you can summarize the most important skills that you possess. This should however not be simply a random list of skills. You should always review the job advert to identify the specific skills that they are looking for. As with your qualifications and licenses you should tailor this section so that the skills that they are looking for and value the most appear first.
Remember also that not every skill is a hard skill that is relevant to your work as a nurse practitioner. You should also include some soft skills in your nurse practitioner skills for resume such as these highly important qualities that most recruiters will be seeking:
Compassion Stamina Attention to detail Ethics Communication Commitment to development Confidence Critical Thinking Adaptability
This section should not simply be a mass of keywords that the recruiter is looking for however. Select what you feel are the most important 6 to 10 skills to highlight within your resume. If you put too many the impact of what you do write is diminished as it simply looks like a long meaningless list.
Experience or Work History
This should be the most important and longest section of your resume so that the recruiter can see what you have achieved in your past work. This is where you need to carefully tailor your achievements to what the recruiter is really looking for. While you could list everything in the skills section, there is a small hack. It is better to have some of those skills highlighted as achievements that you have made in your past employment. So tailor this section with care to show the recruiter what they want to see.
The section should be organized with your current or last employment first and go back in time. Provide the reader with the name of the institution, your job title, the area in which you were working and the time that you were there. Within each employment section, you need to include what you have achieved. This should not be just a list of responsibilities, however. Responsibilities are pretty much a given from the job title. Always try to provide some insight into what you have actually done.
If you have made changes or improvements make sure that you showcase those achievements and if possible quantify them. Quantifying what you have done will make those achievements appear far more impressive.
Highlight the skills that you have developed within the employment, do not however simply say that you developed the skill. Give examples of outcomes so that the recruiter can see that it is not just an empty claim on your part. Demonstrate what you can do with brief examples rather than telling them.
You should choose about 5 to 8 things to highlight within each of your employments. If you have many different jobs then it may be best to concentrate on your most recent roles and not to expand on the older areas of your employment which are likely to be less relevant to your intended employment.
Education
This section should always be below the work experience section. The recruiter will pretty much expect that you will have the specific requirements listed for the role that they have advertised. Start with your highest qualification and stick to degree level qualifications unless they have actually requested anything else. Provide them with the name of the degree, the awarding body and the date on which you qualified.
Honors and Awards
If you have won any awards or specific honors through your education or working career then they can be listed in a spate section to highlight them. Alternatively, they can be highlighted within the section in which they were won such as the educational or work experience sections.
12 Statements to Use within Your Work Experience Section
Whether you are looking at our RN, MS, BSN nursing resume samples or our writing advice you will often be looking for tips on what to include to show your experience. The following are some example sentences that you could include:
Scheduling of follow up care for patients over 3 to 6 month periods with therapists and other medical specialists.
Patient education on a holistic approach to their specific medical needs and treatment options.
Worked with the primary physician to formulate appropriate treatment strategies for patients.
Review and assessment of patients to identify specific priorities for care.
Monitoring of vital signs and taking action based on changes observed.
Review and interpretation of lab reports, x-rays and other reports on patient health.
Assistance for emergency personnel, conduct and support resuscitations and other life support treatments.
Prescribe and administer pharmaceuticals and immunizations as required.
Full accountability for evaluating patient requirements and developing care plans.
Provision of treatment for complex situations requiring rehabilitation and physical therapy.
Caring for patients recovering from recent surgery, serious injuries or with serious diagnosed chronic medical conditions.
Using clinical management experience to improve the running of the unit and improve efficiencies.
Keywords to Include within an NP Resume
Many recruiters will use an Applicant Tracking Software system to review your resume before it gets anywhere near the actual recruiter. These systems look for specific words that the recruiter will specify within your resume. These words will usually reflect what the recruiter will put within the job advert to reflect the specific skills and qualities that they are looking for in an applicant. So it is very important that you reflect the wording used in the advert in your own writing. This will mean putting your job title in the same wording as the job and mentioning qualifications and the like in the same way as the recruiter writes them.
Failing to use the keywords correctly could mean that your resume never gets past the computer into the hands of the actual person. The following are selected keywords that may be useful on your resume:
Adhering to ethical principles Interpreting medical tests Developing rapport with patients Preparing health education materials Problem solving Customer service Diffusing stressful situations Coping with pressure Attention to detail Performing minor surgeries Decision making Protecting sensitive data Maintaining confidentiality leadership Accurately documenting patient condition Ordering physical therapy Evaluating medical situations mentoring Training staff Monitoring Managing medications Consulting with health team members Taking initiative Promoting healthy lifestyle Report writing Surgery preparation Creating treatment plans Physical assessments Critical thinking Diagnosing Devising protocols for nursing practices Counseling Prioritizing Evaluating staff performance Delegating Teamwork listening Coaching Supervising Formulating care plans for patients
What Degrees and Qualifications to Mention on Your Resume?
Before pursuing a career as a nurse practitioner you should already have graduated with a bachelor’s degree in nursing and practiced as a licensed Registered Nurse (RN). The route from here to becoming a nurse practitioner is through taking a graduate degree in nursing. The most popular route is to take a Masters degree, Usually the Masters of Science in Nursing or MSN degree. The more preferred route, however, will be to take the longer Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree. Whichever route you take however you should detail both your Bachelor’s degree and your graduate degree on your resume.
Typically, an NP will have to work as an RN for at least 1 or 2 years before moving on to study for their graduate degree. This gives them the opportunity to gain experience in various specialties that they may wish to pursue as an NP.
The American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) provides you with a full breakdown as to what each state requires in the way of licensing and qualifications. In most states, a Family Nurse Practitioner will need to achieve certification through the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) or the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). This will be in addition to their RN licensing. Depending on your specialty or subspecialty you may also require additional qualifications and license that will be specific to your role.
7 Most Frequent Mistakes to Avoid in Your NP resume
Whether you are following the Yale employment strategy for new nurses or following any other route to find a job your resume is still going to be the most important part of your application. Written well it could make the perfect first impression and get you invited to interview. Write it poorly and it may not even get to the hands of the recruiter let alone to the interview stage.
The following are some of the most frequent mistakes that nurse practitioner job seekers make with their resumes that you must avoid:
Not tailoring to the job you are applying for: Nurse Practitioner positions are highly demanding and the recruiter will have some very specific expectations of you. If you do not show that you meet all of those expectations through your resume clearly then you will have little chances of getting interviewed. Always carefully review the job advert and all other information that you can find about the role to ensure that it is included in your resume.
Not using the right keywords: using different wording than the job advert could mean that your resume gets overlooked. Well over 75% of organizations will use a piece of software to screen your resume and if it does not contain the words that the recruiter wants to see you simply will never get seen. Always reflect the language that you see in the job advert within your resume so that you can be sure that you get into the hands of the recruiter.
Not enough detail: often you can lose out to applicants that have taken the time to spell out exactly what they have done in enough detail to impress the recruiter. Do not assume that they will understand what a task entails or what specific roles mean. Be guided by the job advert and spell things out to reflect the level of detail shown within it. If they list out specifics reflect them to the same level in your own writing.
Inaccurate or mismatching details: often you will have a profile on LinkedIn and maybe on other sites also. You need to ensure that all of your profiles and your resume provide a consistent and matching message. Dates that don’t line up or other information that does not match can tell the recruiter that you have been careless with your writing or maybe economical with the truth. Either way it could sink your application. Few recruiters today will not check your online profiles if they have an interest in you.
Failing to mention your accomplishments: many of the applicants will have a similar background and can probably list out similar responsibilities within their working days. You have to ensure that your personal resume makes you stand out and that means showing clearly what you have achieved within your roles. Be clear as to the professional experience that you have and any awards that you have gained both academically and professionally. The better that you can stand out the more chance you have of being selected over others.
Poor formatting: some job seekers will overuse bold and italics and even insert different colors and fonts into their text. All this does is confuse the reader who is looking to quickly see the information that they are looking for. If you want them to see information then ensure that you maintain a clear and easy to read format for your resume. Have clear space prior to each section to draw the eye there and use an easy to read font in 12pt of bigger. Ensure that you put the key things that the recruiter will be looking for at the very start of each section so that they are seen first.
Not editing or proofreading your resume: often your resume will be the first and only thing that the recruiter will see of you. If it is full of grammatical errors or spelling mistakes or simply poorly written you are not making a first impression that will impress.
Make your application stand out and increase your chance of getting selected to interview by following our nurse practitioner resume tips!

New Grad RN Resume with No Experience & Job Seeking Tactics
How Good Does Your New Grad RN Resume No Experience Need to Be?
If you are newly graduated and starting to look for that first job you may be worried about what you should be coving in your new grad nursing resume. After all with no job experience under your belt to speak of you may be wondering what you should cover within your application. How do you impress the recruiter with your new grad RN resume with no experience?
Most new grads will struggle with everything from the format of their resume through to just what information they truly need to cover to impress nurse recruiters. This can make the task of writing that attention grabbing and effective resume very difficult. We however can provide you with all of the support that you need to ensure that your resume will stand out.
What Is the Future Outlook for Nursing Employment?
It is expected that there will be a 20% increase in demand for RNs over the next several years with the educational system in the US unable to keep pace with what is required. This is giving very low unemployment rates of around just 2.5%. While this may mean that employers will be struggling to fill positions it will still mean high competition for better nursing positions and competition for those offering better salaries and conditions.
There are roughly 4 times as many RNs as there are physicians in the US healthcare system, with more than 3 million employed . Most now graduate through college and university with a bachelor’s degree in nursing rather than using diploma programs. Specialty areas for nursing cover everything from nurse midwives and nurse anesthesiologists through to specialist oncology, neurological and ICU nurses. Over 60% of nurses are employed within hospitals with the remainder being employed within private practices, healthcare associations, schools, hospices, the military, and other agencies.
How to Organize Your New Grad RN Resume with No Experience
There is a huge amount of information out there from Careerealism on resumes to many other sites that will provide you with often contradictory information about how you should organize and write your resume. However, we will try to provide you with clear reasons for our advice so that you can understand why we suggest what we do for your resume. It is often worth looking at all of the different advice that you can see so that you will be able to get the best idea for your own writing.
When it comes to new grad RN resume tips let us first start with how your resume should be organized and what sections should be covered. The main sections that you should include as a part of your resume are the following:
Summary
Licenses and your certifications
Education
Clinical Rotations
These headings for your resume all contain information that you will be able to provide in some for or another. As such these should be the main parts of your resume following on after your personal details which you should put at the top of the resume. The following sections can also be included if you have something relevant to write within them:
Skills Summary
Work history
Affiliations
Honors and awards
Volunteer activities
Languages
Some would argue that you should place your work history in your resume prior to your education and clinical rotations. However if you are writing a new grad RN resume with no experience to speak of this may be difficult. Rather than listing summer jobs or other barely relevant work experience it may be far better to be totally up front to the recruiter with the fact that you are a new grad.
If the recruiter is not up for hiring someone that has no experience then they will overlook your application anyway. If they are up for hiring a new grad but you put your barely relevant work experience first they may never get to your newly qualified status. After all you are not going to get any real RN experience until you have actually graduated from an accredited nursing program, passed the NCLEX and gained your RN license. It is always best to clearly show that you are newly qualified to the recruiter right from the start. It may even work in your favor if they are favorable to someone that is recently qualified.
You may also want to change the order of those first sections if you have for instance not yet gained your licenses. You may wish to drop this section further down the page so that the recruiter gets to see all of your other excellent information first.
What to Put in the Different Sections of Your Resume
The Summary
Some people may suggest that you actually start with a new grad RN resume objective section rather than a summary. But as the Forbes tips on resume summary statement writing and many others will tell you is that the objective statement is often a big mistake. It is outdated and most recruiters would look at it as if you are telling them what you want rather than telling them why they should be hiring you. You need to sell yourself to the recruiter by summarizing the main reasons as to why you are the right person for the job. Not tell them what you want in a job. This is why you should include a new grad RN resume summary.
Your resume will likely only get quickly scanned by the recruiter. It is therefore important that you make your summary stand out. You should always include the following in your summary:
State that you are newly graduated and where from
Outline your clinical rotations that are relevant to the job you are applying to
Highlight any other relevant skills to the post such as computer skills or a second language
So a simple summary may be:
“Recently graduated (2018) from a 4 year Nursing degree through the University of Pennsylvania, graduating in the top 10% of my class. Rotations included pediatrics and oncology. I also speak Spanish with native level fluency.”
Your License and Certification
Provide the recruiter with all of the information that they will need to know which certifications and licenses you have. This should cover everything from AOCN certification to your RN license. This information should be provided with the following:
The full name of the certification or license
The issuing body
If applicable the expiration date of the license
The certification number
If it is part of the Nursing Licensure Compact indicate it as such
Some nurses completing the section for their licenses worry about giving their license numbers. They should not however worry as this information is freely available to the public on the state licensing board’s website for all to see. But the information is required for the hiring manager or recruiter to be able to verify your licensing.
Education Section
You should include all of the nursing schools or colleges that you attended when gaining your degree. There is no need to include your high school results. It is recommended to provide the following information as a minimum:
Full name of the institutions that you attended
City and the state where they are located
The dates between which you attended
The final degree that you achieved.
In addition there are several other things that you may wish to add within the education section of your resume:
GPA: Include if you have a particularly good score, otherwise it is better to leave it out.
HESI or ATI scores: if the recruiter has shown an interest in them or if they are mentioned in the job description in any way.
Relevant coursework and the grades that you received: this should only be considered if you have received A grades for the coursework.
Honors and awards: if you do not want to provide these in a separate section of their own they could be listed here.
Remember, do not include any information that is simply not relevant to the job that you are applying to simply to pad out your resume and make it look more impressive. It will not! Irrelevant information just serves to distract the recruiter from the information that they are looking for.
The Clinical Rotations
Again these are a very important part of your resume if you are to give the recruiter a good idea of the specific experience that you have gained during your education. Many universities will expect that you list them when you apply to their residency programs. The minimum information that you include for the rotations should cover the following:
Whether it was a clinical rotation, senior preceptorship, or another form of rotation
The starting and end date for the rotation
The number of hours that were worked for the rotation
The name of the hospital or institution in which the rotation was performed
The city and state
The name of the department in which you undertook your rotation (L&D Labor and Delivery, MS Medical Surgical Unit, ICU Intensive Care Unit, etc.)
When it comes to listing the unit name do not simply list the name that it is known by in the hospital. Give the type of unit and the type of patients that it contains so that the reader will understand the type of patients that you have been caring for.
The following information can also be included as it will give the reader a more thorough understanding of what you have been exposed to during your rotations:
Describe the facility type: such as “acute care hospital”, “children’s hospital” or “Long term care facility”.
The number of beds within the facility in which you undertook your rotations
Provide the trauma designation if applicable to the facility
Whether or not the facility is a teaching hospital
The number of beds within the unit in which you were assigned
The units trauma designation if applicable
The range of ages that were cared for within the unit in which you were assigned
The ratio of nurses to patients
The form of charting system that was employed
The EMR/HER with whom you gained your experience
The grades that you gained: provide this if you received an “A”
These technical details will allow the recruiter to see just what experience you have been exposed to during your rotations. These details are far more effective at communicating the experience than trying to describe it. It will also demonstrate to anyone reading that you also understand the importance of this information.
You also have many other opportunities here to sell yourself through the experience that you have during your rotations. If you have developed specific skills during these rotations such as empathy or compassion hen mention them. Make sure however that you provide clear examples of your use of those skills, don’t just simply claim that you developed them without backing up the statements.
You should also look at other things that may have been going on within the unit that you worked within. Was it trying to get approved for some form of certification, where they introducing new systems or software? All of these things can boost your employability, especially if the job you are applying to is in the process of going through something similar.
Work History
This should be used with care, especially if you have had several short jobs during your studies. You do not want to look like someone that jumps from job to job every 5 minutes. Employers are looking for someone that is going to be stable in their employment.
It is unlikely that you will have any real RN experience as you will only be able to be licensed once you have graduated. You need to ensure that your experience that you mention can be related to the type of work that you are to undertake as a nurse. If you have healthcare experience then that is fine, if however your work is in fields other than healthcare you need to relate it to what you have been doing. This may include covering the skills that you developed with your employment which could cover things such as team working, time management, or communication.
If you have no relevant working experience or are unable to relate the skills that you developed to your nursing career then it is fine to omit this section completely as a new graduate. You will have already stated that you are new grad in your summary so the recruiter will not be expecting a length experience section.
Affiliations
If you have joined the American Association of Critical Care Nurses or any other organization that is relevant to your work then this is the place to highlight it. Being a member of these organizations demonstrates a commitment to your profession as well as an intention to keep up to date with developments in your role. You should mention all of the following details when listing your affiliations:
The name of the organization that you have joined
When you joined them
The title or designation that you hold
Any duties or seat that you hold
Any conferences or other events that you have attended as a member
Volunteering
Many students undertake volunteer roles to widen their experiences as well as to help their local communities. Whether you have volunteered at a healthcare facility, charity or anything else you should be able to highlight the skills that you have developed in much the same way as you would with work experience. Volunteering also demonstrates things such as your compassion and dedication. The following information should be provided with your volunteering:
The name of the organization that you supported
The time when you volunteered
The number of hours you dedicated for your support
Your duties and responsibilities: if possible details the results of what you achieved
Any recognition or awards that you may have received
Awards and Honors
If you have been given any form of special recognition then you may wish to highlight it within your resume. This can be done within the specific section that it relates to such as your education or within a standalone section such as this if you want to give it special emphasis. Ensure that anything that you highlight however is relevant to the role to which you are applying. You should ensure that you spell out the reason for the award and its significance rather than just giving the name of the award and the body that gave it to you.
Skills
Unless you have highly developed skills that you have gained proficiency with during healthcare related work experience then this section is usually missed out. If you have only done something a few times within your rotations then you cannot claim full proficiency within it, you are still developing those skills. For those that have completed health related work experience and gained certification and additional training in certain areas such as crisis management or phlebotomy then this section can be an excellent way to show off specific skills that may be sought by the job that you are applying to. Again be guided by the job that you are applying to. If they are seeking specific skill sets and you have real experience then it is worth providing them within this section.
Language Proficiency
Being bilingual is an excellent skill to have within many professions, especially within nursing. Many hospitals deal with communities that speak languages other than English and as such your language skills may be a unique selling point to help you get the job that you are seeking. It is therefore very worthwhile showing the languages that you speak within a section dedicated to them specifically. This is especially true if you know that the job you are applying to have a need to interact with many different community groups.

Dos and Don’ts for Writing Your Nursing Resume with No Experience
Actually writing your resume does require a certain amount of skill and time and this should not be underestimated if you are to get invited for an interview. It is not enough to get your RN training sessions to relate to your career goals, you have to truly sell yourself to the recruiter if you are to get your resume noticed. The following nursing new grad resume tips will help you to ensure that your application is noticed:
DO:
Tailor your resume to the job you are applying to: review the job advert and identify the specific skills and other requirements for the job. Ensure that you reflect these within your resume along with the specific keywords that they use.
Use a simple format: you want to use traditional headings for the sections as outlined within this article and wide clear margins. Your resume should have plenty of white space and be easy to read.
Use a font that is clear and simple to read: use something such as Arial or Times New Roman in 12pt.
Start each section with the most important skill or qualification that they are looking for so that they are seen first.
Do use bullet lists and short concise sentences to get your points across quickly.
DON’T:
Don’t use excessive formatting of your text or decorate your resume: you want the recruiter to read what you have written not to admire your artistic capabilities.
Don’t lie or exaggerate your capabilities just to fill your resume or make you a better match for the post you are applying to: if you are interviewed it will be discovered.
Don’t include information that is simply irrelevant to the post as filler for your resume: it simply hides the information that they do want to see.
Don’t write lengthy descriptive sentences: stick to short concise sentences that communicate quickly and clearly.
Don’t forget to spell check and review your writing: you want to ensure that they get the right first impression when they read your resume.
Promoting Your Resume on Social Media
The majority of recruiters and hiring managers will check your social media profiles before making any decision to invite you for an interview. It is therefore very important that you present a consistent message with your LinkedIn profile, Twitter account and even your Facebook posts.
Social media is also a perfect way to network and engage potential employers. It is estimated that 80% of nursing roles are filled through networking rather than simply applying for a position and getting hired. So how do you promote yourself on social media and build your network? The following are some tips for promoting your job hunting through some of the more popular social media platforms:
LinkedIn:
Ensure that the details in your profile agree with what is written in your resume.
Complete your profile professionally in line with the type of job that you are looking for.

ICU Nurse Resume Sample: Structure, Objective & Duties
You Need the Best Resume for ICU Nurse
If you have already taken a look at our ICU nurse resume sample then you will understand that yours must be written with great care to present you in the right way for your job hunting. This area of nursing is growing rapidly with an increase of over 16% expected over the next 10 years. With lots more jobs come lots more opportunities, but, managing to land one will depend on the impression that your intensive care unit nurse resume makes with the recruiter.
This is why you will need to ensure that you take the time to ensure that your resume is perfectly written and tailored for the job that you are applying to. You have to quickly and effectively show the recruiter that you have the specific skills and experience that they are looking for. Only if you can do that will you be considered for an interview.
What Does an ICU Nurse Job Entail?
Most ICU staff will specialize in a specific area such as cardiology, pediatrics, oncology, or neuro care. The roles however are fairly similar in that they will be working with patients that need detailed care due to life-threatening issues. All nurses in this demanding area should have excellent communication skills, must be able to act calmly under extreme pressure and rise to any challenge thrown at them. They must also have the technical skills required to:
Monitor the equipment used for the patients
Watch for often subtle changes and assess the patient
Manage medication doses
Provide anesthesia and ventilation support
Provide end of life care
Tips for Writing Your ICU Nurse Duties Resume
Providing an effective resume means writing something that quickly and effectively shows your personal skills and training as a perfect match to the job that you are applying to. Achieving this however is not a task that many nurses look forward to. Most simply use the same resume and update it every so often and send the same version to every job they apply to. They then wonder why they are never the one called for an interview.
The following tips should be followed when writing your CRNA nurse resume:
Understand what the recruiter will be looking for: review the job advert and any information about the department that you are applying to so that you can clearly identify what they will be looking for in your resume. Ensure that you fully mirror their expectations in your resume.
Keep to one or two pages maximum: any more than this simply will not get read. It will also mean that your resume contains much more information than they will be looking for and you may be obscuring what they want to see with irrelevant info.
Format your resume with care: the page should look clear and clean with a minimum of text formatting so that you don’t confuse the reader. Keep things aligned to the left and maintain clear space around each section so that the eyes are drawn to where you want them to read.
Don’t use unsupported or generic skills: anyone can write that they are a team player or that they are hard working. Avoid these phrases and prove your achievements with examples.
Don’t use a ICU nurse resume objective, this focuses only on what you want. Instead, provide a summary of your personal skills or a short profile that describes who you are.
Proofread your resume carefully: spelling mistakes or other errors makes the impression that you are a sloppy nurse or that you are not bothered that much about the application.
