okay, i keep seeing you talk and post about it and i have to ask... what is eerie indiana and should i watch it? :))

what is Eerie, Indiana? Well. on a surface level Eerie Indiana is a family mystery show produced jointly by Hearst Entertainment and NBC in 1992. A show that the network was unable to properly advertise due to the 'tween' audience not yet being a thing it ended up being pit against 60 minutes (and in one case literally not even being aired at all so they could air the speech of a presidential hopeful /conspiracy theorist from jail, and another not being aired due to the network pulling it due to content, it was released by Fox in the 1998 reruns) essentially dooming it to fail. Despite this, NBC ordered a half season and a re-tooling of the show to introduce a more serialized set of storylines rather than episodic. Sadly, this wasn't enough to save the show and it was cancelled after one, single, glorious, practically perfect season in 1992, running for a mere 19 episodes.

Created by Jose Rivera and Karl Schafer (who most recently did Z Nation) the show is made up of immese talent at the very start of their career. I can't even tell you about the amount of talent on this oddball little show. Joe Dante (of Gremlins fame) directs and even acts in one episode. Bob Balaban directs some episodes, Claude Atkins plays a ghost cowboy, Anita Morris plays a sexy secret agent, Ray Walston plays an alien (i mean. duh.), René Auberjonois plays a literal devil business man named 'The Donald', Tobey Maguire (your beloved) plays a ghost who haunts Marshall and makes his family say slurs, Vincent Schiavelli plays an evil dentist, Future Scream Queen Danielle Harris plays a heart transplant recipient...The twist? The heart came from one of Marshall's best friends. and, best of all, John Astin (THEE JOHN ASTIN. GOMEZ ADDAMS) plays the mysterious owner/operator of The World 'O Stuff - the local hangout - for the final six episodes. Like the talent here is truly unreal. (did I mention John Astin?)

with a cast headed by Omri Katz (who you might know from Hocus Pocus) the plot of the show follows the adventures of Marshall Teller (Katz), his best friend/kid sidekick Simon Holmes (Justin Shenkarrow , you might know as the voice of Harold in Hey Arnold) and in the last six episodes, his homoerotic nemesis Dash X (Jason Marsden, you might know him from his many iconic voice roles - notably Max in a Goofy Movie, and also as Thackery Binx in Hocus Pocus) an alien with no memory of his past. On the surface, Eerie is a normal if slightly the Burbs esque small town, but once you look a little closer you start to see...Some cracks. A cult of housewives sealing themselves and their families in giant tupperware so they don't age. A Mayor who sends young men up to wolf mountain to ensure low taxes and they...Don't come back. A mysterious Loyal Order of Corn who...Run Things. Marshall and Simon investigate their strange hometown and are literally Just Trying to Get Through This Bestie. In one episode, Marshall goes where lost items go. In another, his friend Steve's retainer starts picking up the traitorous thoughts of the local dog population.

Eerie is a cult classic in basically every sense of the world. After you've seen it, you can see it's fingerprints all over the 'kids with bikes' genre. Stranger Things, Gravity Falls, Goosebumps (the show) all of them owe a massive debt to Eerie Indiana. The show itself is massively intertextual. It references everything from little shop of horrors, to the Howling, to the Twilight Zone to the Fly. But you don't need to have that knowledge to enjoy it, Eerie is a family show. By that I mean it was created for viewing by the whole family, not specifically teens or adults only. If you like Round the Twist (predates Eerie by 4 years), than you'll like Eerie.

in 1998 there was a controversial reboot made in Canada staring Bill Switzler and Daniel Clark. It too only lasted a season. I love TOD but many hate it. Lastly, should you watch it? YES! I recommend Eerie to everyone I know basically. It is a little dated in parts, and some of the themes are really heavy (Child abuse and neglect are very present, long running themes in many episodes - I actually agree that Broken Record should have been pulled from airing because i find the ending very upsetting) Marshall, our protagonist is a very sweet, empathetic teenage boy character who I NEVER saw on television when I was growing up in the era of the Dan Schnider mean spirited sitcom. He's sort of an asshole sometimes but hey - he's a teenager. Simon is just adorable and literally deserves the whole world. Dash X is very cool, mysterious, gay and totally unhinged. Every character on this show is written fantastically, there are no half hearted performances, everyone is selling it the entire time. I'm very fussy about television, but Eerie is a show that I think is genuinely nearly perfect. I almost am glad it was cancelled so no one had a chance to ruin it lol.

If you're interested (and I hope I've sold you) then you can buy it on youtube, basically. It was previously on Amazon Prime but isn't anymore sadly. You can pay through the nose for an expensive DVD set like I did or.....You can do the smart thing, google it and watch on like. Kisscartoon lmao. We all know and love the 1993 classic film Hocus Pocus, don't we? The Sanderson sisters are some of the most iconic movie characters ever. And who could forget that amazing scene where they're singing "I Put a Spell on You?"

Well, we may be getting a sequel to this beloved film. According to sources, Disney is currently in talks with director Adam Shankman to helm Hocus Pocus 2. Jen D'Angelo is writing the script, and there is no word yet on whether or not Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, or Kathy Najimy will reprise their roles as the Sanderson sisters.

There is also no word on when this sequel would take place, although I'm sure it would be set after the first film's events. And as for a release date, nothing has been announced yet, but I'm guessing it would premiere on Disney+ or Netflix since that's where most of Disney's live-action remakes have been debuting lately. Rewatched "Hocus Pocus" with the folks...

It was a muggy and cold Friday, we had nothing better to do and the TV's Netflix app was acting up. I could've fixed it, but Mom was impatient. So... Off to the Mouse's demesne we went, and she randomly picked the best Bette Midler vehicle to ever exist. Here's a few random thoughts.

You can really tell the production company only managed to finagle a few weeks around Salem. The daytime scenes sort of track (although a lot of 'em were actually shot in Marblehead, Mass.) but the rest of the movie has that specifically closed-off feeling that really screams "Shot in Burbank, California". It's kind of fittingly hokey; with quaint little New England towns sort of melding into the nineties' idea of a spooky set: dead trees, lots of moss, random headstones, a bajillion fog machines working in tandem.

The movie sort of feels like a horror flick that's had its teeth pulled out, too. I couldn't put my finger on it as a kid, but having grown up and having watched Lawrence Gordon and Bryan Yzna's Necronomicon and Mick Garris' Masters of Horror, I could really dial in the impression I had: this is the work of horror movie buffs dialing their schtick down for the sake of easy Disney cred - and none of that seems to diminish the black-hearted, cackling fun at the heart of the movie. Unsurprisingly, Mick Garris was one of Hocus Pocus' producers. The movie's visual language screams "nineties' horror movie". No wonder I keep pairing viewings of it with Nimoy's The Halloween Tree - that other kids' vehicle gives me the same basic feeling.

I like how anchored it is in the nineties. The shoes the town bullies steal from Max feel amusingly retro, now - and Ernie/ICE (Larry Bagby) feels very coded in 1993's trends. It's just another movie among many that showcase just how bonkers the entire decade was, culturally. For similar vibes on the West Coast, give Hocus Pocus an Encino Man chaser.

My father's a very... credulous movie-watcher. Kathy Najimy affects a sort of goofy facial palsy as Mary Sanderson, and keeps it up as any well-trained character actor would. Dad honestly asked us if Najimy had the same condition as Jean Chrétien, one of Canada's former PMs - made famous for his lisp and crooked mouth. Having watched Sex and the City with Mom a few years back, he needed a few appearances for Sarah Sanderson's actress to really dial in.

Yes, Dad; that's Sarah Jessica Parker acting like a total airhead. Yes, Dad; you're basically watching actresses usually known for snarky deliveries camping it up decades before "camp icons" would become a mainstream concept - and yes, Winifred, Sarah and Mary are a few gags short of the Three Stooges, Except Evil. Yes, I always thought that was intentional.

Apart from the Sisters, the rest of the cast feels... meh. It's like you're watching The Mask, except the plot's designed to toss Bighead out the window and put the focus on Ipkiss. Of all the meh-sters of their craft at work, I'd have to give a big-ol' fist-bump to Omri Katz as Max Dennison, for not really bringing flesh to the basic arc of the big-city-kid-who-hates-it-here-and-who-comes-around-through-shenanigans. It's there, it works, but it sort of lacks soul.

Surprisingly, Thora Birch wasn't completely terrible, except maybe for her character's reaction for Max's dismissal being to bodily toss herself onto a pile of pumpkins and cry. I mean - who does that?! I was a Halloween diehard as a kid who's get sick before running the neighbourhood and who'd faint in his chair while his mother was putting greasepaint on him, as desperately eager as I was! If someone had ruined Halloween for me, I'd keep it in for the candy run and then ruin my facepaint while ugly-crying with my mouth stuffed with too many fun-sized Reese peanut butter cups.

On the plus side, the movie having originally been a Disney Channel production allowed the team to work in a ton of cameos. The Dennisons' costume party features a Program from Tron, in a blink-and-you'll-miss-it moment.

There's something to Bette Midler's Winifred that makes me hope she's prototyped that high-energy, ultra-camp poshness with kids, before actually trying for screen tests. The lead Sanderson Sister feels like Mary Poppins gone horribly, wonderfully wrong - to the point where I'd hope she's been given occasion to play her outside of the movie, at least once or twice.

FreeForm’s Hocus Pocus 25th Anniversary Halloween Bash

Tomorrow night Freeform is airing it’s Hocus Pocus 25th Anniversary Halloween Bash, and Lily and I were lucky enough to be there when they filmed it!

Tickets were announced in September for a “Hocus Pocus night” at the Hollywood Forever cemetery. Since I’ve always wanted to see a movie there, I signed up right away, and so did Lily, and a few of our other  friends. We got confirmation, and were super excited, talking about the benefits of picnic blankets and what snacks would be best. Then we got an email saying that outside food and drinks wouldn’t be allowed, and that was kinda weird, but it said there would be food trucks, so ok. Then an email came about it being standing room only, and no blankets or chairs allowed, and i’ll admit, we were a little confused...were we gonna spend the entire movie standing up? That just seemed odd compared to other movies we had heard about there. But whatever, it was gonna be an awesome night, in an awesome cemetery, with awesome friends, watching an awesome movie. What actually happened was WAY more awesome than what we had planned, and it turned out, we didn’t end up watching the movie at all.

Instead we were there for the taping of Freeform’s Hocus Pocus special; which included appearances by the director, Kenny Ortega;  sit downs with the cast of the film, including Sarah Jessica Parker (Sarah Sanderson), Kathy Najimy (Mary Sanderson), Omri Katz (Max) Amanda Shepherd (Emily), Doug Jones (Billy Butcherson) and Jason Marsden (Thackery Binx); a costume contest hosted by Ross Mathews and judged by Sharon and Kelly Osborn, and Margaret Cho;  musical performances by  Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, Jordin Sparks, and more; and to top it all off the whole thing was hosted by Vanessa Hudgens and Jordan Fisher. It was beyond fun! We filmed for hours, yelling and cheering at the top of our lungs, all the while being front and center (and right in front of the cameras) for the whole show. Freeform did a great job of making it feel less like a tv taping, and more like a party.

But for me, the absolute highlight of the night were the beautiful outfits! Vanessa Hudgens was an absolute show stopper in everything she wore, and I’d like her outfits from the show placed in my closet now please. For her first look she wore the “argentina” gown from Walter Collection. An ornate black beaded spider web inspired dress with long sleeves and a high neck that clung to every curve. The outfit was finished with sheer black almost floor length “bat wings” attached to the sleeves. But it was her costume change halfway through the show that left us all speechless. In a skin tight black pvc catsuit, with feathers and rhinestones as accessories, her look can only be described as “vampire showgirl” and we were all under her spell. Jordan Fisher looked beyond handsome in his ultra swanky skeleton inspired suit. Kathy Najimy was radiant in a long black sparkly dress, and Dove Cameron, Sofia Carson, and Jordin Sparks were pure perfection in modern versions of the Sanderson Sisters iconic outfits. I could literally write pages upon pages about the outfits worn that night, but I’ll leave a little mystery for when you tune in (trust me though, you don’t wanna miss Ross Mathews in all his unicorn glory!).

The Hocus Pocus 25th Anniversary Halloween Bash airs on October 20th on Freeform, but don’t worry, If you don’t get catch the first airing there are plenty more! You can watch it for the first time (or again) at the following times:

Hocus Pocus (1993)

There aren’t many Halloween-themed movies fit for both little children and their parents. This - but mostly the annual showings of the film by Disney - is why I believe Hocus Pocus has become a cult classic. Though the plot may not be original and there are a couple of rough bits, the special effects are quite good and its trio of witches is memorable.

On Halloween, 1693, in Salem, Massachusetts, witches Winifred, Sarah and Mary Sanderson (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy) are hanged after draining the life out of a little girl to restore their youth. Before their execution, Winifred casts a curse that will resurrect them if a virgin lights their Black Flame Candle during a full moon on All Hallows’ Eve. In 1993, Max Dennison (Omri Katz) tries to impress his classmate Allisson (Vinessa Shaw) while taking his little sister Dani (Thora Birch) trick-or-treating and accidentally bringing the three sorcerers back to life.

I get why the movie is a fan favorite… without feeling like I will ever crave to see it again. Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy are clearly having fun as this trio of dimwitted spellcasters. All three have iconic looks that would be a lot of fun to bring to life for your own October 31st celebration. They provide a couple of good laughs here and there. As for the heroes, the young stars are appealing, particularly Thora Birch. Their characters are pretty stock, leaning towards bland but when they’re teamed up with Thackery Binx (voiced by Jason Marsden), a 300-year old boy who was transformed into a cat and cursed with immortality, you can’t help but smile. Seeing a live-action talking kitty is just delightful, whether you’re watching this movie or an adaptation of Sabrina, The Teenage Witch.

The biggest issue with Hocus Pocus is that it doesn’t know what to brew with its ingredients. Sarah Sanderson flirts with practically every man she sees - but so what? It’s just something for Parker to do while Najimy sniffs around for children and Midler scolds them for their blunders. All the witches need is one child for them to stay alive past sunrise but they’re so inept you never feel threatened by them. This might be a feature for young children watching but for grown-ups, the threat is non-existent. The film plays with the idea of becoming a musical in two scenes. First, when Sarah lures a child to the Sanderson home with a song, then again in the present when Winifred (not Sarah?) hypnotizes the adults at a Halloween with a rendition of I Put a Spell on You. Another idea that goes nowhere, though I'm sure fans would call it one of their favorite scenes.

You could draw the heroes' arcs with your eyes closed, making the villains a standout by far. They aren't badly written, it’s just that you’ve seen everything there is to know about them elsewhere, from the older brother who doesn’t appreciate his younger sister until she is threatened to the generic high school bullies who prey on him and the pretty classmate he befriends and will eventually share a kiss with. For a brief moment I thought maybe the film would play with the idea that Max is a virgin. Maybe he and her would… but then I remembered this is a Disney movie made in the early ‘90s.

If you’ve never seen Hocus Pocus before, you expect it to be this big deal thanks for the star power and the fact that we’re still talking about it in 2022. The truth is, this movie is workmanlike, at best. Unless you grew up with Hocus Pocus, you're unlikely to call this an instant favorite. Its popularity might even leave you scratching your head. I come late to the Hocus Pocus party, but then so did almost everyone else. It was a critical and commercial flop when it made its debut in theaters in 1993, and only over the years, as Disney marketing shrewdly took advantage of Halloween hype, did it become a small phenomenon. Parents wanting something for kids to watch other than gory horror films during the Halloween season snapped up the videos and Disney rolled it out on TV along with merchandise like dolls and bedspreads. And now, almost 30 years later, comes a sequel. Disney never butters its bread thinly. You can also thank (or blame, as your inclination may be) the gay community, since the film features two actresses, Bette Midler and Sarah Jessica Parker, who have become iconic for many gays. I finally succumbed to the hype last night and sat through the movie that Gene Siskel called “dreadful” and Roger Ebert squished under his thumb. It's not as awful as that. Midler, Parker, and Kathy Najimy, the trio of witches, seem to be having fun behaving like drag queens, there's some wit in making the teenage hero (Omri Katz) the “virgin” who lights the candle with the black flame, and the precocious Thora Birch makes the ideal spunky kid sister. It's too noisy and too frantic, but we do get to hear Midler's version of the Screamin’ Jay Hawkins classic “I Put a Spell on You.” Still, I think I'll wait another 30 years before watching Hocus Pocus 2 (Anne Fletcher, 2022).

Some Random and Spooktacular Facts About Classic Halloween Movies

After you head in after the trick-or-treating and costume parties are over, will you watch one of these fall classics? 

Addams Family Values 

In Charles Addams original New Yorker cartoons, the family had no names, so they were created for the Addams Family TV show in the ‘60s. For the dim son, Addams suggested either Pugsley or Pubert. Producers chose Pugsley because Pubert sounded vaguely dirty. So, when the plot of the second Addams Family movie in 1993 called for Morticia to give birth to a new baby, screenwriters used the name Pubert as a nod to the franchise’s history. 

A Nightmare on Elm Street 

Johnny Depp’s first movie role came in this film as the teenager Freddy Krueger terrorizes. Depp got the role when he accompanied his friend, Jackie Earle Haley to his audition. Director Wes Craven selected Depp, and didn’t cast Haley…although Haley would go on to play Freddy Krueger in the 2010 remake of the movie. 

Beetlejuice 

The film about the “ghost with the most,” portrayed by Michael Keaton, who helps a recently departed couple try to get the humans who bought their house to leave, almost had a different title. Producers almost called it the boring House Ghosts. Director Tim Burton hated that, but thought he’d game his way into getting the title he wanted (Beetlejuice) by suggesting an even worse title: Scared Sheetless. But then the execs like that title even better…before realizing Beetlejuice was the way to go. 

The Nightmare Before Christmas 

Director Tim Burton adored horror movie icon Vincent Price, and cast him in what would be some the legend’s final two films. He portrays Edward Scissorhands’s “father” in Edward Scissorhands, and he recorded his lines as Santa Claus in Burton’s stop-motion holiday-mashup movie, The Nightmare Before Christmas, just before his death in 1993. However, Price’s voice began to crack and fail after the death of his wife in 1991, and his tracks were unusable. (Edward Ivory re-recorded the part.)  

Hocus Pocus 

Early ‘90s teen star Omri Katz played the lead role of Max, a kid who accidentally wakes the Sanderson Sisters, actual Salem, Massachusetts ghosts from the 1600s. It’s Katz’s biggest role, but he was producers’ second choice. Max was first offered to then-Growing Pains star Leonardo DiCaprio, who passed on Hocus Pocus to make What’s Eating Gilbert Grape? instead. (Good move: He got an Oscar nomination for his work.)

HOCUS POCUS Sequel May Be In-Development!

For years, fans have been pining for a sequel to the Disney Live-Action film Hocus Pocus (1993). The Halloween hit follows moody teenager Max Dennison (Omri Katz) who explores an abandoned house with his sister Dani (Thora Birch) and town hottie Allison (Vinessa Shaw). After dismissing a story Allison tells as superstition, Max accidentally frees a coven of evil witches (Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy). With the help of a magical cat, the kids must steal the witches’ book of spells to stop their immortal plot.

For years there have been rumors of a possible sequel. Fake poster art has cropped up on Facebook accompanied by news stories of the alleged reboot for years. In July 2014, it was announced that Disney was developing a supernatural film about witches, with Tina Fey was on board as a producer and star. However, Deadline debunked rumors that the film was related to Hocus Pocus. In November 2015, Bette Midler stated in a Facebook Q&A that “after all these years and all the fan demand, I do believe I can stand and firmly say an unequivocal no” in response to a question about a sequel. In June 2016, character actor Doug Jones mentioned that Disney had been considering a sequel, and behind the scenes discussions were in place to possibly continue the series. Until now, none of these rumours have come to fruition.

But appears there may just be a light up ahead.

Mick Garris, co-writer of both the Hocus Pocus story and screenplay, recently opened up to Forbes about the future of the film;

There have been rumors of a Hocus Pocus sequel for the last 10 years that will not die. I have heard they are developing the script, I haven’t been involved in it but I think there will be a sequel. It might be for Disney Channel or Freeform or ABC. I think it will be for television but I hear that it is moving ahead.

  Asked whether not the iconic Sanderson Sisters, portrayed by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy will return, Garris said;

I think they are, yeah, I think they are. If they don’t do that I think it would be a big mistake because all three of them are still so incredibly potent and powerful and great performers and who else can recreate those characters?

Here’s hoping the most recent discussion on a possible sequel doesn’t disappear into a puff of smoke. While we wait, why not enjoy a viewing of Hocus Pocus along with 31 days of Horror Movies in our Halloween marathon?
