Eden of the East
The first five episodes of Eden of the East are incredibly fun as they are mysterious. Having an amnesiac protagonist is a trope that may be tired, but his odd introduction gives the reader things to think about immediately beyond why he is amnesiatic. I loved the visuals in this show.  they emphasize isolation and disconnection, with wide shots of empty cities (like post-missile dc) make characters feel small, while glass walls and screens in japan create a cold, detached atmosphere. it’s all about modern life’s loneliness, where even crowded spaces feel hollow. The selecao game is also an interesting premise, being very tied to capitalism. Money becomes a tool for chaos—akira spends his on missiles, others might hoard or manipulate. juiz, the ai assistant, enables this by executing orders without question, showing how wealth grants power without accountability. it’s less about saving society and more about who gets to play god.
The plot thrives on unanswered questions, ranging from who is akira? what happened on “careless monday”? why do some selecao have skull icons on their phones? the show layers clues without rushing explanations, making you piece things together alongside the characters. it’s less about solving puzzles and more about sitting with the discomfort of not knowing—which mirrors the characters’ own uncertainty in a broken system.
tl;dr: the show uses striking visuals, critiques capitalism’s excess, and dangles mysteries to explore how individuals navigate a society that feels both suffocating and empty. it’s sharp, moody, and worth the confusion.

Eden of the East
Eden of the East is so far one of my favorite films we have watched within this course. What immediately caught my attention was the inclusion of a United States setting featured within a Japanese film. Japanese artistic elements struck me in both an iconic and ironic way, as it showcased the cultural versatility that can be displayed even in the animated world. Additionally, the unique bond shared between Takizawa and Saki was a trait that made this series both adventurous and heartfelt. Most importantly, Eden of the East effectively conveyed the internal issues that occurred in Japan while still highlighting the current phenomenons that continue to strike Japanese society.

The first episode kicked off with Saki being caught throwing an unknown object across the White House front lawn. She is immediately questioned by the authorities, however, this is cut short by the antics of Takizawa who has just lost his memory. Before this occurred, Saki can be caught stating, “Time to put up or shut up”. This is stated in reference to making it to the United States in seek of peace from chaos in her home state . Although this statement was brief, we can immediately determine a rigid mindset of tolerance being established within Japan. Immediately, I was struck with the idea of neoliberalism, or the idea that we are responsible for all our misfortunate outcomes when it comes to the economy. In other words. Saki has been conditioned to believe that it’s either she deals with her current situation, or personally causes it get worse.

Throughout each episode, we are met with important terms discussed in our readings and lecture such as NEETS or depictions of law enforcement and prime ministers of Japan. The Neoliberalism dominance of Japan is further emphasized when Saki explains that citizens of Japan feel that can no longer make decisions for themselves. In other words, they are constantly dependent on the structure and economy of Japan. The ideas and regulations related to the workforce have caused major strains within Japanese society. Examples are illustrated through NEETS emerging as criminals along with terrorists groups like the Selecao forming. This group highlights the extreme lengths individuals would go through to prove a stance against the government.

As far as connecting this film to myself, I closely resonated with the need to seek peace in other countries. For instance, her reasoning for visiting the US was to escape the spreading chaos erupting in Japan (missle attacks, neoliberalism, etc...). Whenever the United States undergoes domestic issues, I find myself longing to visit other "seemingly" peaceful nations such as Canada or Switzerland. It is important to note that every country undergoes its issues despite its 'perfect' exterior. The United States serves as a great example of this. Our nation still remains at the forefront of capitalism that results in inequality and mistreatment of many. Despite this, many individuals from other countries claim our country as the land of opportunity, an ongoing idea that I often judge as an American citizen myself.
Overall, the Eden of the East did an excellent job of conveying the government protests, ideologies, and economic pressures associated with living in Japan.

Messi vs Brazil: The Unfinished Battle
Few teams have been able to keep the legendary attacker quiet, but his next opponent has been one of the best at doing so
Throughout his career, few teams have been able to really stop Lionel Messi. It's one of the reasons he's in this famous GOAT conversation, after all. No matter the level, no matter the competition, Messi's record speaks for itself. With the World Cup now in his back pocket, there isn't much left to hold against him.
Messi's record, however, isn't spectacular against everyone. A very small number of sides have been able to stop him, and one of them just so happens to be his next opponent in CONMEBOL's biggest game.
Fresh off a disappointing loss to one up-and-comer, Uruguay, Messi will lead Argentina against Brazil on Tuesday in a clash of South America's titans. Historically, Argentina are one of the few teams that can even compete with the famous Selecao. Brazil have more World Cups, but Argentina have more senior titles. It's a rivalry that's so good mostly because it has been so even.
