Top Femslash Ships Bracket: Seeding

As promised, we're back with a new bracket! However, we're doing things a little differently this time. Rather than taking the data for seeding directly from a ranked list, we want you guys to be a part of the seeding process!

On media portrayals of older women

Commentary on Lydia's characterization in Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. 🕷

This post was originally a response to a post from two months ago, but it got so big (and also I kinda moved away from the topic a little), I decided to make it its own post. It's a long ramble, basically, about my feelings around how women over 30 tend to be written and how disappointing it often is, especially now that I am a woman over 30 myself.

Before I get to Lydia and my issues with how she was written in BJBJ, I just want to say something. There is a blatant unwillingness to represent an older woman who isn't a mother or, at the very least, married or divorced, and often those women who are depicted as individuals outside of these roles, tend to be either toxic or unhappy characters (Cruella De Vil totally came to mind when I just typed that 😆 But even Cruella is married in the original story). As a matter of fact, the ex-wife or divorced older woman is often depicted as a cruel, bitter, or even evil woman (Miranda Priestly form "Devil Wears Prada" came to mind. Hey, another iconic fashion industry character lol). Single older women are often also depicted as "ugly", or flat out scary characters (Miss Trunchbull in Matilda came to mind).

It's like for many screenwriters it's impossible to visualize a mature woman who isn't or hasn't been married, and is childless.

The issue is not that they are given these roles; the issue is that their character arcs often seem to revolve around these roles and their identity is very focused on being either the mom, the wife, or the ex-wife. More often than not, female characters over 30 that are good are usually moms or struggling wives, and their identity is confined or greatly centered around her role as the mother or the suffering wife. (Chances are, if she's happily married, she's either not the protagonist or the story is over 💀). And if it is not centered around these, then motherhood is something adjacent to the story in some way, shape, or form.

Using the first "Beetlejuice" movie we have an example of a happily married woman in a leading role, Barbara Maitland. She's not an older woman, per se, but she is a happily married woman in a leading role. But what is one of her main concerns as a character? She can't have children. So she does have a motherly-adjacent struggle. At least Adam accompanies her in this story thread and it isn't just a struggle Barbara alone is facing; both of them are pretty balanced as far as their struggles go in "Beetlejuice". (I could have also used Delia as an example here, but she isn't exactly the main character as Barbara was in "Beetlejuice". That said, she is both a mother and wife.)

I'm pretty new to the Beetlejuice fandom (as in I was a fan who watched the movie a few times a year around Halloween, but never actually interacted with fandom or analyzed anything, until I watched BJBJ and became totally obsessed), and as a relatively new fan who has been here since September 2024, I'm not sure what the expectations around Lydia's future were throughout the years in the fandom. But, I'm positive a lot of fans never considered Lydia would choose to get married and to a pretty regular guy at that at some point and become a mother. I'm sure many fans shared Winona's idea of older Lydia being a goth spinster, living a pretty unconventional, but happy life, just doing her thing. She might have gone into photography and kept interacting with the dead and being her goth, "strange and unusual" self.

So it must have been pretty shocking to see that older Lydia is not only a struggling mother, but she is also anxiety-ridden and in an abusive relationship with some normie guy.

Lydia at least has something that separates her identity as an individual from her identity as a mother, in her show, but it's made clear that getting into making the show was considered by her as "selling out", a sentiment that came up in her conversation with Delia. I wish they would have gone into that a little bit more, because it's not entirely clear how Lydia felt about the show exactly and what her reasons were to do it in the first place. Lydia's interest in photography from the first film, and subsequently from the animated show as well (meaning this was an inherent and very characteristic part of her), is non-existent in the sequel.

While it's understandable that "life happens" and people just change over time, and a life of seeing and interacting with all sorts of ghosts must have taken a toll on her, Lydia's characterization was considerably far from the person she used to be, and it feels like a lot of it had to do with her mother role.

I know a lot of fans also appreciate this, too, don't get me wrong; Lydia as she is now is relatable to many women's experience, but what I'm getting at is that a choice was made to write older Lydia like this, and that choice is the same treatment that's given to too many older female characters in the media. They chose to make her a struggling mother, is the point I'm trying to make.

Her character has also become more reactionary; she isn't exactly in control about anything. Even making her show appears to be a reactive decision, too, rather than something she did because she genuinely wanted to. She's even taking medications to get through the day when she starts seeing ghosts (Nadja disappears after Lydia takes the pills, so one can assume she takes these pills to quiet down her psychic abilities and stop seeing ghosts; Rory's comment in the bathroom also supports this).

Lydia is indeed, overall, unhappy, and she has been for a long time. Not saying this is a bad thing; stories need conflict, and it would have been strange if she was living her best life at the start of the film. After Charles funeral we confirm that she wasn't exactly happy when Richard was around, either ("our relationship was over long before the accident", strange thing to say to Astrid when she's questioning her about why she cannot see her father). Things seemed to have ended amicably between them, but it looks like Lydia was not happy in that relationship by its end.

Lydia only seems to take control when her daughter is in danger, so that which spurs her into action is more linked to her mother persona over any other conflict that's more directly linked to her as an individual. If it wasn't for Betelgeuse's intervention, she might have even ended up marrying Rory, who, not only did she not love, he was also using her and being emotionally manipulative and abusive.

I know Lydia at some point became affected by seeing ghosts every other day through her life, as evidenced by the pills, but (and this is something I talked about before here) the way they ended the previous film, there was nothing to indicate that Lydia was in a downward spiral or that seeing strange things and dead people affected her negatively in any strong, life-altering way (unless Lydia was pretending to like the dark stuff before, and by the end she's more herself and admits to not like the creepy stuff; she does reject dissecting the frog in her science class, but then again, she asks the Maitlands to levitate her and pretty much do a ghostly possession in the house for the "Jump in the line" scene. But I digress. Lydia's character arc in the first film is an analysis for another post).

Moving on, Lydia's brief experience with Betelgeuse in the first film also does not justify her current emotional state for the reasons stated above and in that post I linked. Losing Richard also doesn't seem to be enough of a reason to have created the emotional issues Lydia is struggling deeply with in BJBJ, and it does seem that the movie pointed at that, but it was poorly done, when Lydia told Astrid she didn't have a relationship with him long before he passed away; she also didn't have a strong reaction to seeing Richard in the afterlife.

Whatever happened to Lydia that led her to this current state wasn't properly explored, is what I'm getting at, because the film decided to focus her character struggles mostly on her relationship with her daughter, over her own personal conflicts as a separate individual. Lydia as the suffering mom, struggling to connect with her daughter was the focus of her arc. Did we ever get to know exactly why she was willing to marry Rory despite clearly not loving him? (she even seemed disgusted by him kissing her and when he tried to kiss her lol).

Was it because she thought he was her only chance at being happy again? Was it because she thought she needed to be married for Astrid, to rebuild their family? Lydia's actions were entirely steered by Rory; he emotionally manipulated her so much, he made her believe she had feelings for him and start a relationship with him, even. Maybe it was him, the one who convinced her to start the show in the first place, to take advantage of her psychic abilities (which he totally believed to be bullshit, anyway, but he thought he could use her delusions/fake claims to attract fame and money), he was her producer, after all. (Actually I think it was him who convinced her?? Was she making her show before meeting him? Lol I totally forgot this bit. Fill me in because I've only watched the movie twice.)

By the end of the film, ironically, Lydia takes more control for herself when she sends Betelgeuse away (and I say "ironically" because, without Betelgeuse she would still be stuck in the same toxic situation she was with Rory. In fact, things would have gotten much worse as Rory would have gotten away with his plan. She also had no issues handling Betelgeuse during all scenes they had together; she would even raise her voice at him and act exasperated with his behavior--that is not typically how a person who is terrified or traumatized by someone acts around them, but ok...), and she makes a choice to be more focused in her life, assuming she did quit her job, which is up for debate, depending on when the dream sequence started.

Without Betelgeuse, Lydia would be stuck in a terrible relationship, where her life would have been ruined, and she would have also lost her daughter on Halloween night when Jeremy used her to get his life back. So it's really strange a choice (and poorly executed, again) to have Lydia's character resolution be sending Betelgeuse away like she's finally confronting some deep-rooted fear or trauma, when her character really wasn't explored individually all throughout the movie to showcase in what way exactly did her brief interactions with Betelgeuse over 30 years ago might have crumbled her emotional stability to that degree. The movie isn't clear if her depression and anxiety are related to losing Richard and therefore that's what she needs to heal from; or if it's more related to her past trauma around Betelgeuse, and then, that's what she needed to heal from.

There really should have been more of a focus on her as an individual apart from her struggles as Astrid's mother for her character to really have a good payoff at the end. And truly, if facing Betelgeuse was going to "fix her", then she's back at square one when he shows up on her bed at the end. Lydia's character and story are incomplete. More reasons why we need a BJ3.

What's truly going to heal Lydia is her finding herself again, as just Lydia; not the mother or the TV presenter. And she must get there herself, not have it all fixed for her by Betelgeuse yet again or another external force. She has to make a choice for herself. They need to show her picking up her camera again, and yes, enjoying the "strange and unusual". She needs to embrace her otherness and be herself again.

(And if she doesn't want to be alone... she shouldn't go after a guy like Rory or a normie. She needs another weirdo like Richard who loved scary movies, or, ahem, Betelgeuse, who has already proved he loves her more than any normie ever could.)

I can't stress enough how disappointing it is that mature women are mostly presented as moms or wives or even grandmas, without dreams and motivations of their own that are entirely separate from their (societal) roles. Mature men can be out there living adventures and doing all sorts of things, like James Bond for example. Meanwhile women are either divorced, mothers, wives, grandmas, aunts, etc and these roles are a huge part of what defines them as characters. And if it doesn't define them, they still are moms, wives, ex-wives, or grandmas. It's rare to see a single older lady doing her thing and being just a character and like, falling in love and going through a satisfying arc that has nothing to do with having kids, or dealing with estranged kids, etc. At least Delia was out there doing her thing in BJBJ; she was doing what she loved, while still being a mother and a grandmother, and a loving wife/widow to Charles. She was a realized character. And that's what I want to see, you know? I don't mind seeing an older female character who is married with kids (and even grandkids!), as long as she is also a fully realized individual when her character arc is wrapped up at the end.

If Lydia being behind the camera instead of in front of it in BJBJ is representative of her feeling lost in life, and her being in a toxic relationship and almost saying yes to someone she doesn't love or even remotely fit in with, then healed Lydia should be behind the camera again in BJ3, and saying yes to someone she does love and fits in with by the end.

I definitely want to see a Lydia who is more than Astrid's mom in BJ3; a Lydia who isn't easily manipulated and stepped on, and who has a firm grasp on who she is and a love for who she is. Yeah, I totally want her to end up with Betelegeuse (edit: And I am writing a post about why they are perfectly matched to complete each other's character arcs), but I also want to see her fully realized outside of the mother and (potential) wife roles.

i’m thinking miranda priestly!kafka, they’re both powerful, intelligent and very poised. just like miranda, kafka doesn’t raise her voice to command but still manages to manipulate people easily, molding them to what she needs to do i just see her as a boss lady-fashion icon with moments of vulnerability.

silver wolf gives me nigel kipling vibes as in personality/sense of humor only. andrea sachs!tb maybe, it could be very fitting tb being kafka’s partner and then being left to complete the mission but also to make sure they see the ending of their story… much like andrea leaving miranda to build/reclaim her own path. at the end of the day miranda endorses andrea, a good opportunity to insure she gets the job, just like kafka left tb out just in time for the astral express to find them so that the express would take them in bc she knew the crew would treat them like family … am i reaching? i needed to get that thought off my mind.

Cassidy, her partner in this miniature rebellion, echoed, "Yeah, one is not enough!"

Miranda, a paragon of composed authority, raised an eyebrow, "One each. That's the rule. Besides, it's only Christmas eve."

As the twins engaged in a feeble attempt to sway their mother's decree, you exchanged a knowing glance with Miranda. Rules were rules, but exceptions could be made, especially during the magic of Christmas. Reaching into your bag, you produced two additional gifts, a subtle spark of mischief dancing in your eyes.

With a smile laced with secrecy, you declared, "Perhaps, a minor adjustment to the rules."

Caroline and Cassidy, eyes now wide with anticipation, hastily seized the unexpected offerings. The paper surrendered its secrets, revealing a new sketchpad for Caroline and a set of vibrant paints for Cassidy.

Caroline, her face now aglow with delight, exclaimed, "This is amazing!"

Cassidy, grinning from ear to ear, added, "Thank you!"

You laughed joyously, overcome with a sense of deep love for the two girls. You always enjoyed making them happy and surprising them. "A touch of Christmas magic, just for you two."

In the midst of the unfolding festivities, Miranda, the poised matriarch, observed the scene with a smirking satisfaction, "Exceptional circumstances call for exceptional measures."

The room, once filled with a chorus of eager unwrapping, now had Caroline and Cassidy seated on the floor, absorbed in exploring their newfound treasures. Their joy echoed through the room, blending seamlessly with the warmth that permeated the air.

Amidst the unfolding festivities, Miranda, in her poised elegance, gently reminded the twins, "Don't forget the present you made for our dear friend under the tree."

Caroline and Cassidy, their enthusiasm unyielding, exchanged mischievous glances before executing an agile dash towards the Christmas tree. Returning with a carefully crafted package, they handed it to you with proud smiles, eager for you to unravel the mystery of their creation.

Caroline, exuberant in her announcement, declared, "We made it ourselves!"

Cassidy, nodding in agreement, added, "It's the best one!"

You delicately unwrapped the handmade gift, revealing personalized ornaments, each reflecting the unique touch of the twins' creativity.

Appreciation colored your expression as you remarked, "This is wonderful. Thank you both."

Miranda, her smirk now softened, commented, "They insisted on making something special."

Late into the evening, laughter resonated through the elegantly decorated space, and the room was filled not just with the glow of Christmas lights but with the warmth of shared moments and genuine connection. The twins, now nestled on the floor, continued to revel in the joy of the season, and the memories forged that night would linger, like the echo of distant carols, in the corridors of time.

As the night progressed, you joined forces to put the twins to bed, sharing wishes of sugarplum dreams and whispered secrets. Back downstairs, Miranda walked you to the door, the air tinged with a sense of contentment.

"It's been a splendid evening, hasn't it?" Miranda's voice softened.

You nodded, genuinely grateful. "The best. Thank you for having me, Miranda."

As you reached the door, the subtle detail of mistletoe hanging above caught your attention. The mistletoe, unnoticed until now, dangled above the doorway like a clandestine spectator to the unfolding scene. Miranda's smirk returned as she commented, "Tradition, you know."

"I thought you didn't do traditions," you playfully retorted, a glint of mischief in your eyes.

In response, Miranda leaned in, her fingers delicately cupping your cheek, a gesture unexpected yet remarkably tender. "There's always an exception."

Her lips met yours beneath the mistletoe, the kiss holding a subtle intensity, a mingling of warmth against the winter's chill.

As the kiss lingered for a fleeting moment, the snowy night outside seemed to pause, granting you both a suspended instant in time. Miranda's touch, a gentle caress against your cheek, left an imprint that lingered even after the door closed behind you.

"Merry Christmas, my dear friend," Miranda whispered, her voice carrying a warmth that transcended the season.

Your smile held a lingering echo of the shared moment as you replied, "Merry Christmas, Miranda."

"Meryl Streep brought Miranda Priestly to life." It seems to me Weisberger has done more than anyone – besides Wintour herself – to build the legend that exists around a Vogue editor who has become an icon of female power. But Weisberger demurs.

“Oh no, not just me. Two words – Meryl Streep. She did an unbelievable job. When the film was being made, I was like, ‘Oh, this is fun. It’s cool to watch a movie get made, and maybe some people will go see it. But Meryl elevated the Miranda Priestly character to another level with her genius. Miranda is pretty one-dimensional in the book: tough, cold, incredibly competent, and at the top of her game. But Meryl Streep doesn’t do one-dimensional. She brought Miranda to life.”

Finally my last entry for Metalsandwich Movie Mania! @now-showing-at-the-hawk-events!

It was originally thought for the Iconic Movie prompt out yesterday but I just missed the day, so, I post it today!

I really venerate The Devil wears Prada and it's so iconic to me that started thinking and preparing this entry the last year when I first knew about the event, and even so I was able to miss the date!! I couldn't stop me making our Metalsandwich version, although I cheated a little but a prequel and a sequel are possible!

One of my favourite dialogues above the line, I had really so much fun writing it!

“Come on, we have the cover briefing in 5 minutes, that means we are 10 minutes late” smiled Dustin, dusting the crumbs from Steve’s shirt.

Eddie was already there with Heather and another girl, and Gareth took inside two guitar amps almost identical.

“Stand here, watch and listen,” said Dustin, reaching Eddie’s side. Gareth plugs a guitar in one of the amps.

“Where’s my pick?” asking Eddie, and the girl runned searching in a box. “Why is no one ready?” Eddie grunted and raised a brow.

He wore the guitar’s strap and played a chord, then tested a string, adjusting the keys. Then they plugged the guitar in the other amp and played again.

“No,” he said, doing it another couple of times. “Listen? That little sting in the high”.

The sound seemed absolutely the same to Steve, and he was a little bored. 

Gareth nodded. “It seems completely different”.

Steve chuckled, snorting behind his notebook. “Something funny?” Eddie raised a brow. A stone cold silence fell on the room, and Billy came out from his desk and got close to listen. “No… no, no, I’m sorry, nothing” Eddie’s glance was so sharp that he just couldn’t stop himself. “This is… those sounded exactly the same to me… but, don’t mind me, I’m still learning about this stuff”. “This… Stuff?” Eddie growled slowly, in a low voice that was able to turn off all the sounds around him. “Oh, I see… You think this has nothing to do with you. You turn on your radio, your MTV, and think that you can listen to your easy pop just to fill the silence just while you do your laundry. You think that you should play a whatever instrument and mix it with a computer and dance it at a club when you’re drunk. But this is not just playing. This is not just pop music. This is technique. But you don’t bother to think that those tragic pop albums you listen to when cleaning are the job of a lot of musicians that spend a lot of their time searching for the right sound for you to bounce your little head. And it was in 1990 that U2 decided to explore new sounds and tried a lot of different equipment to release that album that you are wearing right now and probably you found at a tragic gas station, in the casual corner. You think this all is not about you, but in fact you’re listening to something that had been selected and produced in this very room, by those very people, playing with this stuff ”.

Day 7: Movie AU 

With the Met Gala coming up, thinking of films like The Devil Wears Prada and The First Monday in May and haute couture designer Robotnik and his reliable fashion assistant Stone.

Robotnik could not give two shits about the gala and the celebrities and fashion influencers that flock to it, but it’s only one day of the year and free advertising for his designs, so he begrunglingly plays along.

Robotnik doesn’t suffer fools and he is not afraid to give a Miranda Priestly-like verbal lashing to anyone who makes a stupid comment, which secretly delights his assistant, except when he finds himself on the end of it. 

Speaking of his assistant, Stone accompanies him everywhere and the two always turn heads when out on the street with how fashion-forward they are. 

His regular clients range from billionaires to leaders of crime syndicates to corrupt heads of state, but Robotnik doesn’t care; they are paying extraordinary amounts of money to own his pieces, so they must have good taste.

He is famously disliked among his peers in the industry, not because of his designs or his clients or because of a few problematic comments he made in the past, but because he is an all-round asshole. 

His assistant is the only one that is able to withstand him. Stone loves his boss and his job and wants nothing more than to support Robotnik and be instrumental in his success.

Upgraded: A Review

It has been almost 20 years since the debut of The Devil Wears Prada, and for that reason, the timing of Upgraded’s release is interesting. This movie definitely exists in the same vein as its counterpart, and I think it’s clever that this film capitalized on the similarities it shares with TDWP to reinvigorate interest in the genre. Camila Mendes is at times, a fun actress, and was the main selling point that ultimately convinced me to watch this movie, but…

Pros:

* Camila Mendes’ performance provides the main character with a well-developed personality. Instead of the usual wide-eyed innocent or fish-out-of-water archetype, the protagonist has a biting sense of humor, she’s down-on-her-luck, irresponsible, sassy, and even a bit vengeful

* It’s refreshing to finally see art history majors, and Irish folk, represented in film

* Ana and William (the film’s love interests) share decent chemistry

* The costume design is more grounded in reality than other films like it and most of the outfits are sophisticated while still looking achievable

* Marisa Tomei in anything is always a plus

* The film’s setting is extravagant and the cinematography in this movie perfectly captures what makes England such a tourist spot

Cons:

* Ana (the main character) is presented with very few obstacles that would make it difficult to achieve success in her career. She coincidentally makes connections with people who immediately elevate her position in life and there are few instances in which the protagonist earns what she has accomplished in the working world. Ana is also set up as a career-oriented woman, but once she meets Will, (the love interest), she becomes far too easily distracted by him and her character arc gives way to an underdeveloped romance

* Ana is characterized as a liar. Despite the level of dishonesty she demonstrates to her coworkers, each of them forgive her far too easily and she suffers no consequences for her actions

* Marisa Tomei is a great actress, but as a result of bad direction, her performance is not very strong. Her character, Claire DuPont, is described as terrifying and demanding to work for, but her actions and behaviors hardly support this characterization. Claire is the movie’s central antagonist and is supposed to serve as Upgraded’s version of Miranda Priestly. Unfortunately, Tomei’s portrayal of Claire DuPont is so much more “cushy” than Miranda Priestly that she does not give the movie a sense of conflict it so badly needs. Tomei is also forced to talk with a cartoonish French accent, which… ugh

* Two rival coworkers are introduced in this movie, but if they were removed from the script, nothing would change, and neither of them pose a real threat to the main character

Verdict: Upgraded is a film that tries and fails to create an upbeat narrative about achieving one’s dreams and finding success in a cutthroat industry. This movie had so much potential to become The Devil Wears Prada for a new generation, but there are many reasons Upgraded does not work on a fundamental level. I can appreciate its attempts to pay homage to a good chick flick, but despite the film’s great setup, its execution and payoff are disappointing. I can only lie in anxious wait for the next big-budget attempt to recapture the magic of one of the most iconic movies of the 2000s.

alright, let me start by saying The Devil Wears Prada is a personal favourite! it’s that magical blend of snark, sass, and style that just pulls me in, sweeps me up, and keeps me hooked from start to finish. I could watch this movie a thousand times over (and believe me, I have) because it’s just so effortlessly entertaining. just, imagine stepping into a world where people are throwing around couture like confetti, and then add Meryl Streep strutting around with this aura that screams “bow down” — it’s simply delicious. the chemistry between Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway is chef’s kiss. Meryl’s performance as Miranda Priestly is just iconic; she doesn’t even need to raise her voice to give the chills. it’s all in that steely stare and deadpan delivery — one arched eyebrow from her, and I'm ready to drop everything and do her bidding ahaha. Anne Hathaway as Andy? perfectly relatable. she starts as this endearingly clueless newbie, and I just can’t help but root for her as she fumbles through Miranda’s endless demands and insane hours. by the end, I was practically cheering her on from my couch, pom-poms and all!

but you know what I love most? this isn’t some cookie-cutter rom-com with the girl chasing after a guy. oh no, no, no. this movie’s about something bigger — finding yourself, standing up for what you want, and figuring out how far you’re willing to go. there’s something refreshing about a film where the main focus is on ambition, career, and self-discovery, rather than love triangles or dreamy proposals. and can we talk about the wardrobe? the fashion in this movie is like eye candy. I mean, I’m not exactly about to start wearing stilettos in the office, but watching Andy’s transformation and all those outfits? it’s a visual treat. I can’t leave out Emily Blunt, either. she’s the sassiest, most hilariously cynical assistant ever, and every line she delivers is pure gold. and Stanley Tucci as Nigel? he’s that fabulous friend everyone needs in their life. the whole cast just bounces off each other so well, and it’s that chemistry that keeps the movie feeling so alive. honestly, it’s like a masterclass in making a “chick flick” (though I feel that doesn’t do it justice). it’s both light-hearted and unexpectedly thought-provoking. it’ll make you laugh, gasp, and even get a little misty-eyed by the end. and if you’ve ever worked under a tough boss, you’ll feel all the emotions!

final verdict: I totally loved it!!
