Dramatic skies poured outside on the eve of the Baftas, but the intimate corners and warming fireplaces of 5 Hertford Street drew in Britain’s best-loved talents and Hollywood stars for the annual Charles Finch and Chanel party. Emily Blunt and Tom Ford kissed hello, before collecting glasses of champagne and going over to greet Gwendoline Christie and Giles Deacon. As the mariachi band played a lively set, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, George MacKay and Minnie Driver chatted together, while Bel Powley and Douglas Booth unwound after a busy day, having first attended a birthday lunch for Powley’s mother, before the Simone Rocha A/W 24 fashion show, declaring with intent: ‘Now we can relax!’

Bob Geldof and Mariella Frostrup linked arms to lead the charge down to dinner, followed by Isla Fisher, who was admiring the interiors. Once everyone was seated, Charles Finch addressed the room: ‘It has been an incredible year for cinema,’ he said, also paying homage to his co-host Chanel and its historic affinity with film – creating haute-couture outfits for productions such as the New Wave Last Year at Marienbad, and countless memorable red-carpet looks. Over lobster salad and poussin, conversation and wine flowed: the nominees Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig were deep in conversation, and Richard E Grant caught up with his Saltburn director Emerald Fennell. Last year’s winner Emma Mackey was all smiles in anticipation of presenting the Rising Star Award, saying, ‘It’s quite mad, I’ve no idea who will get it, so I hope I don’t mess it up.’ It was almost midnight when guests began to descend on the dancefloor, where the party was only just beginning.

'Organisers of a legendary fundraiser for striking miners are returning to the same venue in Camden Town for a “good old bop” 40th anniversary event.

Tickets for the London Lesbian and Gays Support the Miners’ return to the Electric Ballroom, on May 16, are already selling out.

The Pits and Perverts line-up is yet to be finalised but it promises a night of music, dance, drag, political speakers and compered by cabaret and performance artist David Hoyle.

Synth-pop political agitators Bronski Beat headlined the original gig, in December 1984, which drew more than 1,500 fans, gay activists and striking coal miners from across the country to Camden Town.

The story of the LGSM and the night at the Ballroom has become iconic after it was retold in the 2014 film Pride and its glittering cast including George MacKay, Dominic West, Andrew Scott, Imelda Staunton and Bill Nighy among others.

One of the original LGSM organisers, Mike Jackson, told me this week how proud he was about the group’s role in not only supporting the miners – but also changing attitudes towards lesbian and gay people.

Mr Jackson, who lives in King’s Cross, said: “This is the only Pits and Perverts event we’ve had since the original. And it’s really pleasing to be back at the Electric Ballroom. It’s going to be a very diverse night and a good old bop.

“I hadn’t been back there since that day so it was a strange feeling to go in there when we were organising.

“There are lot of ghosts in the Electric Ballroom. So many famous acts have passed through.”

I last spoke to Mike when a signed original Pits and Perverts poster – designed by Kevin Franklin – was put up at the King Charles I pub in King’s Cross in 2022.

On Sunday he was up in Rotherham, Yorkshire, speaking to the miners at a 40th anniversary event.

He said: “I harked back to what it was like as a young gay man in the 60s and 70s. Nobody liked us: politicians, courts, police.

“We had no rights to fight back with. It’s great that things have changed so much with that – and to think how we played a role in it all.

“The unions played a role too.

“Because long before we got those rights enshrined in law, the trade union movement had been helping by starting to look at employment rights, and all the other things that trade unions do.

“When the equalities legislation came in with Tony Blair, there was already a worked-out template for employment rules thanks to the unions.”

Mr Jackson said the LGSM had been “reconstituted” following the Pride movie and that he was part of a group of four remaining working on the legacy.

“We’ve all this merchandise that is still incredibly popular.

“People love our T-shirts. We give the profits away to good causes. We don’t want to be a charity.

“We want to be political. It’s been great to work with the Lesbian and Gays Support the Migrants.

“They are like our next generation really.”

Mr Jackson, a horticulturist who worked at Camden Garden Centre for 16 years, said he was tiring a little physically in old age but still remained as angry as ever.

“The fire is still there. The anger is still there.

“What is this nonsense about people becoming more right wing as they get older? The older I get the more angry I get.

“Because in so much, f*** all has changed.

“I am 72 days before the gig. I can tell you what the news will be: housing, education, war, benefits, the welfare state, greedy capitalism.

“At the same time my best friend is my bed. Sometimes I scream at my bed: ‘I love you, bed.’

“So with all this I am a bit surviving on adrenalin. It’s a bit scary. We are a bunch of amateurs really and it’s a big venue to sell tickets for.

“With the original, we felt the same but once we secured Bronski Beat – I think their Smalltown Boy was No 1 – we knew it would be a success.”

And he revealed his latest theory on where the night got its very excellent name from.

Mr Jackson said: “There’s a great little video you can find called Framed Youth – The Revenge of the Teenage Perverts.

“It was a video project created by the Lesbian and Youth Project, as they were called then, where youngsters had been given training and access to making a video – it was a Ken Livingstone thing, I think.

“This was 42 years ago – two years before the miners strike.

“They go into Ridley Road market in Dalston and simply ask the question: Can you tell me what a lesbian is? It’s like ‘a murderer’, ‘a sex maniac’.

“It’s so comical, but also quite dark. The lesbians were p***ing themselves laughing.

“But that’s what we wanted to do – take the insult, neutralise it and throw it back at people.”

The film, which won an award, is available on YouTube.

The original concert raised more £5,500, which was distributed to families in need.

Tickets for the 7pm event cost £20 and are available on the Electric Ballroom website.'

charlize theron is the leader/mastermind with a side of muscle because she's hot when she beats up people.

sandra oh is second in command without whom the whole thing would fall apart and prob the weapon expert or something. she and charlize's character have crazy sexual tension/partner-in-crime vibes (think pitt/clooney drift compatibility in the ocean films) and the rest of the crew doesn't realize they've been together for years until the end. but in like a sexy they're fugitives who have to live on different continents sometimes non-heteronormative way.

florence pugh is the lonely hacker who grew up on the streets/in the system that charlize's character convinces to join the crew because their old hacker (played by .... idk lets say george mackay since you mentioned him and i like the idea of two blonde bad bitches playing shadows of each other/the same archetype) sold them out on a job a few years ago and they've been making do without ever since. they both swear it's just for one job and they won't get attached but she ends up as the charlize/sandra adopted kid by the end of the film even though she's in her mid-20s.

pedro pascal and john boyega are their conmen because those two oooooooooze charm and we need some boytoys in here.

ik we hate love triangles but florence pugh's character def. is in one with the betrayer george mackay who is sniffing around the operation and whom no one trusts AND john boyega who is a shameless flirt. i can't decide who she develops a genuine connection with, but she does with one of them and its left open-ended for if there's a sequel.

what else do we need ? a driver ? maybe somebody like michael sheen who seeems really unassuming and sweet (aziraphale vibes) but then he's like.... a MANIAC on the road. or kristen stewart looking hot. those are the only two options. actually not kristen stewart, her and florence pugh's characters would 100% fall in love. oooh maybe for the sequel. michael sheen gets hurt/killed in the first one (rip bro) and kristen stewart is brought in for a love square?? lowkey how funny would it be if it ends in an ot3 poly relationship.... who is the one who gets left out? y'all choose. Queer your screens this Mardi Gras

A film festival has been a staple in the life of LGBTQIA+ Sydney since the very first Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras, and this year is no exception.

Sydney’s LGBTQIA+ film festival began in 1978 as the Gay and Lesbian Film Festival and was run by the Australian Film Institute, growing into the Sydney Gay Film Week by 1986.

Queer Screen took over the event in 1993 and has been running it for the community ever since as the Mardi Gras Film Festival.

This year the festival will span 25 days, with both in person and online screenings throughout Mardi Gras and into March.


From February 15 to 29, Sydney will witness a diverse program of 161 films and events across 77 distinct programs.

For those who prefer to join the conversation from home, Queer Screen will offer a curated on-demand program available as an encore from March 1 to 11.

The festival will kick off with British neo-thriller FEMME, starring Nathan Stewart-Jarrett and George MacKay, which follows a drag queen who is given the opportunity to take revenge following a homophobic attack.

Down Low, starring Zachary Quinto and written and starring Lukas Gage, is a hilarious black comedy about a sex worker and his client and the antics that ensue when they have to hide a dead body.

To close the festival Housekeeping for Beginners by Macedonian Australian filmmaker Goran Stolevski will have its Sydney premier, and explores the importance of chosen family.

The film won the Queer Lion at last year’s Venice Film Festival and tells the story of a woman who finds herself compelled to raise her girlfriend’s two daughters.

As their individual wills clash, a heartwarming story unfolds about an unlikely family’s struggle to stay together.

Throughout the festival, viewers will enjoy Australian and international premieres, Aussie-centred showcases and 4K restorations of original films from the 1980s and 1990s.

As always, the Mardi Gras Film Festival will be showcasing as many queer stories as possible, ranging from drag performers, stories from gender queer and non-binary filmmakers, and events from queer history.

This year Queer Screen will hold its first ever event at the Sydney Opera House with Music from Queer Film being performed by the Sydney Cello Quartet in the Playhouse Theatre with music from iconic queer films such as Priscilla: Queen of the Desert and Moonlight.

The festival will also feature a special sing-along screening of The Sound of Music, presented with The Sisters and Brothers of The Order of Perpetual Indulgence Sydney and the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir.

This year’s festival will span nine venues across Sydney including Event Cinemas (George Street and Hurstville), The Ritz Cinema (Randwick), Dendy Cinemas (Newtown), the Hayden Orpheum (Cremorne), the Westpac OpenAir Cinema, the Bearded Tit (Redfern) and the Sydney Opera House.

The festival brands itself as “ready to start a conversation” in 2024, and encourages the audience to indulge in good old fashioned discussion around the films being showcased.

“The theme [this year] focuses on films that start conversations. People will be keen to discuss and dissect them as soon as the credits start to roll,” explains Festival Director Lisa Rose.

“There’s so much to sink your teeth into, including several that will inspire lively debate.”

The State Library of NSW will also be offering some panel discussions during the festival for viewers looking to get more of an insight into the films on show.
