Kinda shocked at how fast we’re getting the Miyata/Ippo rematch so soon. Like they just finished their first fight 4-5 chapters ago now they’re at it again. Not a complaint mind you, pacing’s pretty good so far. Meaningful shit happened between then and now so I’m hyped to see how this goes.

Do you ever sit and cry think about why Miyata is so hung up on fighting Ippo? I mean, apart from the fact that he’s incredibly gay for him. The answer lies in their very first spar, way back when they were bbies.

At this point Miyata is 16 years old, and he’s been training boxing since he was an adorable smol child with one goal in mind: to prove to the world that his father’s boxing is great and can take you to the top.

And then they make him fight Ippo, a complete beginner, who proceeds to mostly flail in Miyata’s direction and yet refuses to stay down, keeps coming at Miyata until Miyata defeats him with his ultimate weapon.

And Miyata comes out of their spar with this thought:

He had fun! Look, this is a guy who’s been training for years, who’s very serious business about boxing. But it’s Ippo who made it fun and exciting.

Also, in rising, the way the relationship between Miyata and Ippo helps Ippo grow.

They're so excited to fight each other but because of Ippo's recent development he can't, the Dempsey Roll being vulnerable to Miyata's modern style of fighting.

So the requests are denied and Miyata just goes to Ippo like "why are you ignoring me?? Do I mean nothing to you? I thought we had something special >;(( " and Ippo is confused and Miyata reads that (perceptive boy) and then Ippo books it to the gym. And then it's revealed that it wouldn't be fair to them both, Ippo at a disadvantage. And Ippo, the humility of this boy, calms down (tho Miyata and their promised fight are so important he gets frustrated and raises his voice, hits the desk, actions that would normally be freaking rare for him) and accepts it saying he'll do anything to fight him.

And how that is used to 1) expose Ippo's weakness in his recent weapon and how that can later affect his career, 2) set him up on another growth and learning arc. I just really like how the author did that.

Also, how Miyata thought it was that Ippo saw him as beneath him but then accepted quickly that wasn't it (it would be pretty out of character for Ippo and Miyata sees that in Ippo's confusion, like "ah, ofc, he'd never") and accepts quickly the real reason, being patient so Ippo can develop something else or something and they can have a satisfying fight.

Just, ah, 💖💖them.

Guys I'm only 24 episodes into Hajime no Ippo and I am losing my goddamn mind over how queercoded Ippo is:

Bullied for being different

Doesn’t have friends before becoming a boxer

His main motivation for improving early on is so he can fight Miyata and become friends with Miyata

Ippo and Miyata make a promise to each other to get to the rookie finals and push themselves to the brink of exhaustion to keep that promise

Spoiler: I haven’t progressed past this part yet but how angry Ippo gets at Mashiba when he beats Miyata in the semifinal

Ippo getting all giddy over the thought of Miyata thinking his boxing is cool after their second sparring match

when Ippo fucking mimics Miyata’s voice and expression as he says “It was awesome!” to himself to imagine Miyata’s response asdjfaskl

Ippo loses motivation to box when he doesn’t see Miyata for a few days

How suave Miyata always seems to Ippo when his back is facing him and he’s wearing that homosexual purple-and-red jacket

Takamura joking that he always thought Ippo was a “homosexual” after Ippo slipped and hugged Miyata’s ass, and Ippo only laughs good-naturedly and says, “You’re such a kidder!”

Miyata’s coy avoidance of him after that as if to say, “dude, you’re so gay” (and Ippo still doesn’t deny it)

The classic sexual panic of “what the fuck do I do?!” when Takamura, Aoki, and Kimura go scouting for girls at the beach and Ippo’s initial horror fades to be replaced by “oh well I guess it’s nice to be out with friends”?!?!

Ippo’s distant interest in some random aloof girl he’s seen and spoken to, like, twice, which basically SCREAMS “I’m not gay, see, guys? Look, I like a girl! I swear I like this girl!;;”

Other boxers (Takamura and co., as well as Ippo’s opponents) remark how weirdly polite and wimpy-looking Ippo is for a boxer when he’s not fighting, since the sport tends to attract men who are all about petty intimidation, bravado, and “macho” masculinity -- basically Ippo being a “special case” in terms of his personality in the boxing profession

In conclusion, I’m sure if I bothered to search up the author he’s probably said some heteronormative bullshit at some point along the lines of, “these boys are all straight; it was just a joke,” but so far it’s like... SO QUEERCODED IT FEELS ON PURPOSE, Y’ALL.

The Depth of Characters in Hajime no Ippo

“ I watched and read all of a Hajime no Ippo recently and wanted to take a look at the thing that makes the series so good, it's characters. There's too many to talk about in one video but I highlight a few that have plenty of development  throughout the series.“

Persistence is key when it comes to getting through to Miyata. Without it, he really would just ignore you and go about his day. Luckily, Ippo is that never-give-up type, whether it’s in the ring or out of it. 

The way Miyata places that juice on Ippo’s head though, always makes me laugh. And Ippo giving the puppy-dog eyes… This kind of interaction is so funny, but yet so adorable…

Without a doubt, Takamura's rage in his battle against Hawk is THE BEST THING THAT WILL HAPPEN TO YOU IN YOUR LIFE.  A battle where he is unconscious and blinded by the shock of his feelings and emotions, he brings out all his gifts, thus managing to give the arrogant Hawk the beating of his life, because guys, what is an eagle next to a monster?
