Hajime no Ippo: What if
(What if Makunouchi Ippo never got into boxing?)
I think we wouldn’t have a manga. Good night.
(Of course that’s the obvious, but how would the world be different around Ippo)
-For the sake of this, Takamura helping Ippo that one time didn’t stick with Ippo like it did that inspired him to become a boxer, simply leaving when he got the chance.
- he would have been bullied till high school. He would have endured it and then after graduating took over the family business full time. Maybe his high school teacher told him to go to university. With Ippo being how he is, it’s basically a given.
-Umezawa would not have become a mangaka and continued as a delinquent not inspired by Ippo’s change to pursue his dream.
-Miyata would have never left the Kamogawa gym, since he would have had no reason to leave. He might not be as driven as in canon, but he’d still have Genji’s guidance as well, so I imagine Miyata would still be as good a boxer by the time the Rookie king tournament came around.
-Takamura is still Takamura, he would still be his usual self and still be a champion. That’s just how Takamura was built. (You could argue he might have lost to Bryan hawk but u doubt it. Ippo only really gave moral support)
-Aoki and Kimura may have not improved as much without seeing Ippo’s success. But that’s debatable. I think their boxing performances would be the same.
-Now let’s talk about how different the Rookie king tournament would have been.
-I imagine in place of Ippo it would have been Yūsuke Oda that had his spot. But Oda would have lost to Jason.
-Jason and Kenta would have had an interesting match, but I think Kenta would have won that. As unlike with Ippo, wouldn’t have been driven to turn it into a punching match.
-The real fight would have been Kenta vs Ryūichi. As Ryūichi was one of the favored to win the tournament, like Mashiba and Miyata. Kenta did beat Ryūichi in their jr. Lightweight title match, but Ryūichi didn’t suffer from Glass jaw back then. I think in this match, Ryūichi would be the winner. Thus having him be in the finals.
-now in the manga, Miyata lost to Mashiba because he pulled a dirty move allowing him to win because Miyata was so dominant (training to beat Ippo). I think without Ippo as the motivator, Miyata would not be as Dominant as he was at the start. I think the fight would be more back and forth.
-With Mashiba still winning because I think he would still pull a dirty move. But Miyata now wants payback against him.
-Now that leaves Ryūichi vs Mashiba. And I think Mashiba takes it, no tricks. Probably humiliates Ryūichi in the process. Making Mashiba the East Rookie king.
-Sendō is still the west Rookie king and thus he gets to fight Mashiba.
-Sendo likely looked up the videos around Mashiba and got pissed, seeing as the dirty move he pulled on that one boxer (probably getting Sawamura vibes) and decides he will teach this guy a lesson.
-Sendō being the dominant force he is, crushes Mashiba. Becoming the All Rookie king.
-now Sendō not having Ippo as his strong opponent to “stick to” left him more hungry.
-Miyata, not having a reason to accelerate his progress, decides to focus on winning matches. And his target becomes Date.
-Miyata likely would have been the one fighting the opponents and one or two more, likely to get to just below Ippo’s rank.
-I picture him getting to the Class A tournament, where Sendo would be. Sendo basically being on a rampage looking for his strong opponent.
-And people still afraid of Date, might not have wanted to compete.
-I think Sendo probably would be Ippo’s rank thus the line up would have Sendo fighting Saeki in the tournament. The speed star would lose. But it would have been a decent fight.
-Miyata would have taken the spot of the boxer that fought Volg in the class A tournament. Now the question is, would Miyata have beaten Volg?
-The answer. I think at this time, Volg would have lost Barely. Because Volg wasn’t fighting in his true style. It is likely the hardest Miyata had been pushed up to that point.
-Sendo would be fighting Miyata. And That would be the true fight. Sendo would remember how the guy got cheated in his rookie king tournament. And would assure him he won’t be holding back.
-Miyata would be the perfect counter to Sendo. And without that loss to Ippo, Sendo would have lost.
-Allowing for the Date vs Miyata fight.
-Date would have won, but that’s just cause the skill level of Date was beyond Miyata’s. I’d put it on the level of Date vs Ippo, but with two less rounds. Miyata wasn’t ready for Date.
-Date would probably leave to the world after that, not feeling that there was anything left in Japan.
-Sendo vs Volg would occur and I think with the shift of fate, Volg would win. As Sendo wouldn’t have been at his level without the loss from Ippo earlier on motivating him. So even the judge couldn’t give it to Sendo. Thus Volg would be the Featherweight champ. And that money would be sent to his mother. Likely saving her life.

i find it sweet that s3 ends with a flashback of neko and gen’s past in their prime like s1 ends with flashbacks on aoki, kimura and takamura’s past in s1
but i am a bit like. when. when is the ippo vs miyata match happening??? do they get to fight especially bc both want to??? when???
guess i’ll have to read the manga to find out since there’s no guarantee of a s4

This is a beautiful panel but it does give him kind of a one-eyed look and makes me want a Cyclops Ippo AU.
I'd love to see Cyclops Ippo vs Nobody Miyata.
#People love Odyssey references#But Polyphemos Ippo wouldn't fall to Odysseus Miyata so easily#He just looks kinda like Leela in that panel#hajime no ippo#chapter 622

Persistence is key when it comes to getting through to Miyata. Without it, he really would just ignore you and go about his day. Luckily, Ippo is that never-give-up type, whether it’s in the ring or out of it.
The way Miyata places that juice on Ippo’s head though, always makes me laugh. And Ippo giving the puppy-dog eyes… This kind of interaction is so funny, but yet so adorable…

So the Kimura vs Mashiba fight.
I have thoughts. Many.
First, Kimura, I always saw him in the anime until now as a funny guy, pretty decent, nothing else. This hour+ of Hajime? Grabbed that and just, didn't deny it, confirmed part of it and then. Built upon it.
My gosh.
Kimura first of all is seen as very human, he fears Mashiba at first, asks for help from Miyata (which btw, Miyata agrees to help very tsundere-ly, love that, Miyata tsundere agenda). Then he takes that help. And ROLLS!
With the advice Miyata gave and some reflection/inspiration (which is great that he was open enough to see) he acted, trained himself and made a plan. Fantastic.
Second, the anime does well in highlighting each of the most important characters assets. Miyata's fast eye and analisis and footwork. Ippo's heavy punch, diligence, grit and humility. These characteristics even color the way they see matches and the parts where we see from their perspectives visually.
In here, we even see remarks on how Mashiba's desperation to win is his most dangerous feature. The thing that gives him that wild, inhuman aura. But beyond that, we see it's fueled by his sister. She's her drive, she motivates him to be the World's best brother (and can I just say that's super cute? I now find Mashiba to be adorable because of this, the softie).
With Kimura, not only it's remarked that he's really well rounded (which I assumed already actually) but that he's a clever fighter. That last one came as a surprise to me but it was treated really naturally, it didn't seem out of nowhere. He knew where he stood in regards of strength at first, he searched for ways to cut that gap using people around him and used that help to help himself go forward with his own perception and discipline. He trained with a plan in mind and throughout the fight executed that plan perfectly, just as he expected mostly, never doubting it. He made a plan! And it worked!
Third. It worked, until it didn't. Damned 3 cm. He was close, so close. But he lost, turned into an organic statue on the ring for a moment too much. He lost and that meant he'd have to retire.
And this is the part that makes me admire him more. He retires. And then, he unretires.
He recognizes that he is filled with love for boxing and he can't stop thinking about those stupid 3 cm. He thinks he might regret them forever (he would). He doesn't want to tho. So he just, makes it so he doesn't have to.
And he even finds a loophole (debuting again but with his name in Katakana) to make it comedic! Just to take the edge off and even technically not go back on his word.
Just, I felt the whole "In my career I'd never had confidence or pride, so now, I'm gonna put 5 years worth of it here". They really grabbed his character and lifted it in less than 2 hours. Oh my gosh I love him now.
#i know i said a thing#but i dont wanna be unhappy forever#hajime no ippo#niche bitching#omg omg omg#i just watched and i was#in awe of kimura#the maturity to say#and just move however to live a life he'd like#inspiring#he's my other role model now#tatsuya kimura

Hajime no Ippo What if:
(What if Miyata beat Mashiba in the Rookie King Tournament?)
-As in the manga. It was Clear that Miyata had Mashiba on the ropes and it was through a dirty move that Mashiba got the advantage and then won the fight.
-But in this scenario, Mashiba’s trick failed. Miyata noticed and reacted. The end result was a victory for Miyata. Promise achieved.
-The finals of the East Rookie King Tournament. Ippo doesn’t injure his fist like he does when he was angry. He is motivated, both sides are excited.
-Ippo gets his training to fight the clearly improved Miyata. And Miyata has begun training to beat Ippo specifically.
-The finals arrive and both boxers are excited.
-Now Like many people, I do believe that Mashiba was not better than Miyata, But that Miyata was still a tough opponent. And Ippo did struggle with Mashiba, however. He also wasn’t 100% in that fight and his mental state was in a darker place. Ippo right now was probably comparable to when he was fighting Sendo in the all rookie king match.
-Miyata also didn’t go through the loss that helped him grow. So I would still say that they would both be comparable.
-But with the power of Plot armor and determination, I think Ippo would Barely scrape a win. Likely in the fourth round. By K O.
-Now would Ippo stop boxing after that? Nah, After Fighting Miyata, he would probably want to fight him again. They were officially rivals now.
-Ippo would then fight Sendo and now that he had fought Miyata and felt a true rival fight. He would be motivated to keep going. Since there was no injury to his fist. Ippo’s fight with Sendo had less worries. And I think Ippo would actually be stronger than he was in the manga. But the result would be the same. Ippo winning the match.
-I do think after graduation, Miyata would tell Ippo he was going to train as in the OPBF, as he feels the gap between them has widened and he wants his Rematch. Which I think will motivate Ippo even more.
-As for Mashiba, how would he be different? Honestly, he’d probably have a more focused hatred of Miyata, but also the guy that beat the guy that beat him. And that guy starts seeing his sister? Oh hell no. He definitely doesn’t approve.
-But Mashiba went up to the same weight class he was in the manga.
-Mashiba does become the Japanese champ.
-And Ippo like in canon, still loses to Date.
-Interestingly though, because of the strength of Ippo at the time (thanks to his fight with Miyata) Ippo was a stronger foe for Volg. Volg had to resort to his more natural style but as he wasn’t used to it, he lost. This made Volg resort to this style when fighting Sendo, and since Volg Barely lost to Sendo because of decision. This let Volg turn it over and win the Japanese Featherweight title.
- This did ensure that his sick mother got the money she needed for care and she could survive.
-Now Ippo had a new goal, to fight Volg.
-Meanwhile Sendo goes back to training and now seeing Volg as one heck of a goal!
-Ippo has his match where he discovered the Dempsey roll.
-Since Volg was the champion, he wasn’t in as much of a rush as Sendo was, but he was still winning.
-I actually think Volg would decide to take on the world After one more title defense. Using Ippo as his final test.
-Ippo vs Volg rematch. Which Volg was now much stronger and more analytical. But Ippo having had more opponents would have learned the shortcomings of the Dempsey roll, and been ready to fight Volg.
-A fight on the level of Sendo vs Ippo in Canon. But arguably even harder. Ippo wins the match. Volg decides to head home after, believing he owes to his mother to rest. Ippo becomes the champ. And there we have the title defenses from before.

Crunchyroll Adds More Hajime no Ippo To Catalog!
Crunchyroll is excited to announce the addition of more Hajime no Ippo anime to the site's expansive catalog! Following up on the addition of The Fighting! TV series and the Champion Road TV special earlier this year, Episode 76 and the fan favorite Mashiba vs Kimura OVA will premiere later this afternoon at 3PM PT for members in the US and Canada.
Ippo Makunouchi's gentle spirit and lack of confidence make him an easy target for the bullies at his high school. Rescued from a beating by Takamura, a professional boxer, Ippo aspires to learn the art of boxing, and attempts to join the Kamogawa Boxing Club. But, to find his fighter's spirit, Ippo must first spar with Miyata, an extraordinarily talented and skilled boxer. Can Ippo even survive the first round?!

I’ve been rewatching the Ippo anime and I forgot how dull Ippo’s title defenses get.
Not that they’re bad fights, but compared to Lalapalooza, and Battle of Hawk, I’m just not that interested in stuff like Submarine Wars. Especially because we get a slew of new challengers instead of getting to Ippo vs Miyata.
On the plus side, this is where other characters really start getting focus. So there’s still interesting stuff, it’s just that Ippo’s story becomes the least interesting out of everyone in the gym imo.

Miyata-kun saves the day (and saves Ippo a lot of money, which he doesn’t have)!
As much as Ippo is a rival, Miyata isn’t so heartless that he would let Ippo, a relative newbie to the boxing world, get suckered into buying a pair of boxing shoes that wouldn’t suit his style.
