To Come Home - Bleach&KHR WIP

The first two chapters of this are published here. This is a Cloudy Sky!Ichigo bonds as Xanxus' Cloud Guardian, inspired by many other fics!

I've been stuck on this chapter for the last few months, so since I'm halfway through it, I decided to post it here to see if that got me animated to finish.

Ichigo was expecting the meeting to be hellish. He expected the two Skies in his city to be old men or yakuza thugs, and their circles not much better.

That's why, when a literal kid entered the meeting room, followed by an assortment of personalities that looked as diverse as Ichigo's own circle, he was surprised, and curious. He didn't know many other Skies, and none of the ones he knew were human, besides Yuzu.

He's used to a Shinigami's circle; old Yamamoto's small and distant circle, Aizen's fake circle. All very formal, distant, and almost hidden from the outside eye, nothing like Ichigo's circle, who are all very open and close to each other, even the Shinigami.

The kid introduced himself as Tsunayoshi, and the older sky as Xanxus. Interestingly enough, it seemed like Tsuna was the one leading the meeting. From where she's napping on the rafters, Yoruichi informs them that Xanxus is, actually, a Storm-Sky, just like Ichigo is a Cloud-Sky, and seems to be bonded to Tsuna.

As Kisuke greets them, Ichigo chances a glance at Byakuka, who tilts his head in confirmation. Huh. Ichigo doesn't know how he feels about that.

Ichigo introduces himself and his elements, noting how both Skies look interested when he says these are his main elements. Considering Xanxus is apparently Tsuna's second-seat storm, that makes sense.

The meeting in general is... okay. Ichigo hates standing in ceremonies, and explaining himself. Half the time he just does whatever Kisuke tells him to, how does anyone expect him to explain anything? He lets Kisuke and Byakuya take the lead, only speaking when prompted. He mostly pays attention to the Skies, and his guardians.

Tsuna's guardians seem... young. Most of them are either fifteen or sixteen, with the exception of the Sun and Mist. It makes sense, since Ichigo's human guardians are also the same age as him, but it is still... curious. Most of them don't give off the mafia vibe, even if all of them are wearing suits. The sun – Reborn? – and the Cloud – who Ichigo has the feeling would be a great fight; by the way Yoruichi settled on a beam right above him, she agrees. Ichigo would never escape his reputation as a Cloud-collector – look like they are the most used to all this ceremony.

Xanxus' guardians, however, do give off the mafia vibe. Above that, they give off the dangerous mafia vibes. Xanxus himself is full of scars, and with the exception of the Mist, all of them look like killers, even the child-storm.

For some reason, though, Ichigo can't really get his attention away from Xanxus. He doesn't know if it's because he's never met a human dual Sky before, if it's because, just like Ichigo, he has the kind of face that screams I'm one inconvenience away from murdering someone, if it's because he looks like he'd be one hell of a fight.

(Discreetly, he looks at Grimmjow, who also has his eyes set on the Storm-Sky. Yeah, Ichigo hopes they can arrange a less formal meeting. Grimm can have a go at the Sky, and Ichigo is dying to harry that Cloud into a chase.)

Soon enough the meeting ends, and Kisuke elbows him to get up and accompany them out. He can see Toshiro hurrying out, back to the basement where Rangiku and Nelliel are doing god-knows-what, and Grimmjow is heading to the same direction, but dragging his feet. Chad and Uryuu are huddling together, probably to head together to Inoue's, where they all have a study session after Ichigo is done here.

Kisuke puts a reassuring hand on his back, softly enough no one else sees except Byakuya, who huffs an exasperated breath.

Ichigo already feels better here, outside the shop, with sunlight on his skin. He looks at Tsuna's elements, specially at the Cloud, and offers a hand, sky flames bright on his grip.

"Hey, it's nice meeting another Sky. Feel free to drop by, yeah?" He says, scratching at his nape. He can feel Byakuya glaring. "Just... maybe send a letter first."

Tsuna laughs, clearly getting his meaning, and offers the same to him. Ichigo always finds it weird, the instant connection he has with other Skies, the understanding that, fundamentally, they were both doing what was best for their people.

Then, Ichigo extends the same hand to Xanxus, and it happens.

Ichigo remembers harmonising with all his elements, of course he does.

The warm, simmering heat of Chad, his first bond and his most reliable one, always there for Ichigo no matter what. Hands on each other's back as they rested, training together, long nights of silence spent on each other's company.

They were half-bonded the moment Ichigo's Sky flared to life, when Rukia was taken away. The moment they fully bonded it felt like the most natural thing, like something that was always meant to be there.

Kisuke's mist, the bond setting in place as his mentor kneeled and apologised, from them on the no-secrets policy between them, the promise that if Ichigo wanted the world, Kisuke would be the first to get it for him.

The days from then on spend with each other, first training and learning, and then simply... enjoying each other. Kisuke's several mental issues settled when he found the one person who would always, always accept him. Ichigo delighted in knowing there was someone that could match him, be it in conversation, studying or fighting, someone who would always be one step behind him.

The steady, calm drizzle of Shinji's rain, the bond settling and calming his hollow in a way nothing else could. With it, slowly, came the awareness of the rest of the Vizard; with their sky bonded to another, they couldn't help but be just that little bit more attached to him.

(It was... An unique experience. Shinji was his Rain, ever-present and slippery, but he was also a Shinigami Sky, and it was with this bond that Ichigo learned what the difference was.

Sure, the Vizard were bound to Shinji, but Mashiro and Kensei orbited each other earlier, would always turn towards each other first, the Storm-and-Lightning of mayhem. Lisa, also a rain, was still hurt from leaving the almost-harmony she shared with Shunsui. A hundred and more years together, and they just now settled on anything close to steady. With Soul Society opening their captain positions back up, their bonds were drifting apart; Rose's cloud drifting further away, Love's sun setting to shine somewhere else.)

It meant Shinji wasn't used to his own attachment, to the way his hollow and Ichigo's clashed, to the way he wanted needed Ichigo close. It meant time spent together, discovering new limits and long talks about just what it meant to be bombed, to be a Circle, and more importantly, to be a Sky, with people who depended on you.

Ichigo is going to be honest, after that mess in Hueco Mundo, everything happened so fast he barely had time to actually pay attention to his new elements, in between training and planning Aizen's defeat.

It was Yoruichi, her Cloud mingling with his so slowly he didn't even notice it, at first. It was Ishida, animosity broken when Ichigo almost died in Hueco Mundo, the feeling of losing his Sky before he could have it properly. It was Nelliel, the injured Arrancar glueing her Sun to his sky the moment they touched, before even revealing her identity.

During the battle of Karakura, new bonds brimming with nervous energy of a not-yet-settled bond and the adrenalin of a dangerous fight, it was Grimmjow, defecting and turning sides with a snarl, his Storm tired of being caged under Aizen's false sky. It was Starrk, taking one look at Shunsui, longing and needy, and accepting Ichigo's extended hand, when the Captain wouldn't extend his own.

The aftermath, losing his powers... Without his bonds, Ichigo is certain he would not have made it.

No powers, and Soul Society and his own damn father trying to lock him away from his Circle, or at least from all the non-human ones. 

Ichigo could still see Chad and Ishida at school, and as much as he was glad for that, he was getting increasingly more irritable as time went on and it became clear they were dealing with the problems Ichigo usually dealt with on their own.

(It hurt, of course it did. He was supposed to be the one to protect them, wasn't he? Chad just clasped a hand on his shoulder, supporting, and Ichigo could see Ishida's eyebags as he scoured through his family's library, in the hopes the Quincy might have a way to help.

They were trying, and that was all Ichigo could ask for.)

It lasted for about three weeks before Kisuke kidnapped him to his basement, where Grimmjow, Nelliel and even Starrk seemed to be about to climb the walls; turns out, Hollows bonded physically a lot more than emotionally; being away from him was almost painful for them.

Shinji took five minutes to preserve his dignity before he, too, was climbing on the cuddle pile. Kisuke and Yoruichi were keeping an eye on them all, mist-and-cloud mingling together as they lounged on their own little bubbles.

What surprised Ichigo, however, was the white haori standing on the sidelines. Toshiro, nervously twisting his hands, scowl firmly in place.

He offered one hand to Ichigo, when Starrk was done with social contact and went somewhere else to brood, and Grimmjow and Nelliel somehow got in a tussle with Shinji.

He knows they can bond, he says. He felt it when they were training, before the battle, but everything was so hurried and chaotic he thought it was better to not say anything. Ichigo scoffed, got to his feet on his own, and put Toshiro in a headlock, their bond settling between them with a crackle of electricity, the rush of competition and understanding.

Ichigo had called him setupid, and told him to stop being a coward, next time.

The latest bond, and Ichigo hoped the last one, happened after Ichigo got his powers back.

(He'd hoped, secretly, that Rukia would be it, but it didn't work. Apparently, she was a Glacier Flame, and those didn't bond to Skies at all.)

It happened when Byakuya of all people shook his hand when he arrived at Soul Society to visit, his Cloud setting on the very edge of his senses. It was, funnily enough, the least compelling of all his bonds, the only one that was truly a Shinigami bond, and Byakuya still looked alarmed enough that Ichigo halfway thought he'd run away.

They worked it out, though. Ichigo couldn't see himself without any of them, now.

Even remembering how all his harmonizations went, Ichigo wasn't ready for this.

It felt... like he could finally relax, like a warm bath after training, the water eveloping all his body, a promise of rest and a safe place to let his guard down.

It felt like when he was on the battlefield, his elements at his back, looking out for him so he could keep going forward. Like someone would always have him covered, making sure it would be alright.

It felt like those late-night conversations with Kisuke or Shinji, baring his soul to them and knowing it would be accepted and understood.

It felt like having a whole sky above his head, ready to fall down should he need it.

Ichigo blinked, his flames still cloud-indigo and reaching for Xanxus' sky. Was this what his elements felt, when they harmonised? Was this tug to get close and bask in that flame normal?

If it was an all-time thing, he seriously needed to cuddle his elements some more. He almost felt bad for all the times he kicked one of them out of his bed.

"What the fuck." Xanxus swore, his eyes wide in surprise, flames unnerved and surprised and delighted.

Behind him, Ichigo could hear Kisuke crackling.

The Godfather sighs like he’s so sad and tired deep inside and Ichigo barely refrains from rolling his eyes. Manipulation is Kisuke’s game, it’s almost pathetic to watch. “My son has made some… bad choices. I am simply worried, it’s better that he recovers with family, where he belongs.”

Part 1 of Feral Home

Xanxus knows he's being a childish little shit. It's stupid, it's ridiculous, it's below him. This is a civilian town, a little place in the middle of fucking nowhere with the only interesting bit being that it's close enough to Namimori to store his men in. Fuck. Who is going to tell him to stop? Sawada? The thought of the younger Sky makes him furious and the next hit comes dangerously close to being full of Wrath. Fuck this civilians, they're not even putting up a fight.

"Oi!"

He whirls around to find some dude glaring at him. It would be hot if Xanxus wasn't sure this one will fall just as quickly as the rest of them. Besides, this one looks sick. It's a shame, too. He's all hard lines and fury, orange hair glinting in the sunlight. Xanxus could almost be tempted into another source of anger control if he wasn't so close to losing his shit. He's not in the mood to deal with a civilian in his bed. Xanxus snorts, downs the last idiot and turns to the newcomer. "Fuck off."

"Stop throwing the idiots to the old lady's garden, you idiot!" The newcomer snarls right back, pointing at the sad remains of what Xanxus supposes once was a garden. Now, it's a pile of passed out bodies. 

"No." Xanxus stalks up to the guy, pushing him away with one finger and watching him flich slightly. Is he injured? No matter. "Fuck off, brat."

"Name is Ichigo," the newcomer informs him. "And if anybody needs to fuck off, it's you. What is a bad boy wannabe doing in Karakura?" 

"Wannabe?" Xanxus doesn't know if he's amused or angry. This civilian has more balls than Sawada. And some so-called men of famiglias. He's staring Xanxus down like he thinks he can handle whatever Xanxus throws at him. Or, Xanxus thinks, like there's no other option. 

Ichigo rolls his eyes. "Wannabe." He shrugs, somehow making it seem dismissive. "I've seen worse."

Angry, Xanxus decides. That's what he feels. "Fuck you." He rears his fist back, ready to down this one too. But this one ducks underneath him and bodily pushes Xanxus away from the destroyed garden. 

"What did I just say?" Ichigo grunts, taking the punch to the ribs in favour of herding Xanxus back. "Leave the fucking garden alone." 

"It's just a fucking garden." Xanxus snorts, ducking under the kick that tries to brain him. He grabs the leg and pushes up, ready to watch the civilian fall. Instead, they both end up wrestling on the ground. "The fuck."

"Not your garden, you asshole." Ichigo manages to untangle himself, pushing for enough distance between them to stand up again. "Fuck off, bug people somewhere else."

"Or what?" There's something nagging at Xanxus, some knowledge his body grasped that escapes his mind. So Xanxus stands back, crossing his arms over his chest. "Truly, or what?" Something in Ichigo's eyes flashes and Xanxus finally figures it out. This is a Sky, a dormant one. Curious, lucky, maybe. It's not common to find random civilian Skies. Even if this one appears to have at least some level of martial training. Xanxus could be responsible here, inform the Vindice of the probable powder keg in this civilian town and move on. Or, and this one will cause his old man so much grief, he could push this Sky into activation and then sit back to watch the chaos. 

With that in mind, Xanxus lets his flame simmer under his skin, no longer tightly leashed. It's not enough to break omerta, not enough to show anything. But this Sky is close to the edge already, Xanxus is just hurrying things along. Surprisingly, for the first time since the confrontation started, the dormant Sky takes a step back. Brown eyes stare at Xanxus with suspicion. "What sort of bullshit idea did you just come up with?"

"Perceptive," Xanxus taunts. Maybe he'll snap this one up after all. "Don't you stress about it, you'll see soon enough."

Ichigo clicks his tongue in disbelief but takes on Xanxus without hesitation. With his Wrath helping him along, the fight takes a turn. Ichigo, dormant Sky or not, is injured and very clearly tired. Stamina alone would make Xanxus the winner but the brat keeps pushing himself up, he's losing and he knows it and still, he keeps getting better. He keeps coming for more. Screw it, Xanxus wants him now. Two Skies in the Varia will be difficult to pull off but Xanxus has confidence in his abilities. Worst case scenario, he creates a subdivision. With a right hook, he pushes the idiot down again. "Stay down, trash."

"No." Ichigo stands up, spits out blood and glares. "Fuck off, you sadistic bastard. What are you playing around for?" 

Well, Xanxus can't quite tell him he's trying to get him active. Brat might run off. And yet, they've been at it for hours now and Ichigo should have ignited by this point. "So I'll stop playing around." The assassin almost chuckles at the sudden wariness. He wants this one so he's going to get him, Mammon is around now anyway. Omerta won't be broken once this Sky is active and the other civilians won't see a thing. Mammon has that in hand. "Show me." Xanxus pushes his flames out, forces Ichigo down with them and watches him crumble.

He's not expecting Ichigo to stand back up. He should have but he's not. Ichigo glares at him, shaking where he stands but standing anyway. The brat's hand reaches for something on his back and his mouth turns down when he doesn't find it. "Show you what, you asshole?"

But finally, finally, something pushes back against Xanxus. An overwhelming flash of Sky flames that tell him all he needs to know. "You're injured." Flame deep. This Sky isn't dormant, he's hurt enough that it's almost impossible to feel his power. But that's not the part that makes Xanxus reflexively reach for him, pull him into his arms once Ichigo passes out. This is a Home, one compatible enough with him that it makes Xanxus's brain screech to a halt. "Fuck." Mammon shimmers into existence beside him and Xanxus doesn't move, doesn't indulge the miser's curiosity. "Get me Lussuria."

20, 99, Ichigo/Xanxus

(With apologies to anyone expecting a vaguely IC Xanxus: I’ve read fic with him, but never source material, and it’s been a damn long while XD)

Ichigo’s leading his students back to their hotel when it happens.

A great orange-red blur bolts from a nearby alley, pursued by several distinctive men, all wearing identical uniforms and obviously furious; one even has wisps of bluish power trailing from his fingers, clearly intent on doing something to the creature they’re pursuing.

Ichigo doesn’t bother stepping aside. He flickers forward in a tiny burst of shunpo. Scoops up the… cat? Cat. And tucks it against his side even as he lets his reiatsu uncoil from his soul. He keeps it subtle for the moment, just a sense of pressure in the air directed at the men and shielding his students, but he’s ready to act if he needs to.

(He may be a teacher these days, but that doesn’t mean he’s lost his edge.)

(Especially against near-baseline humans.)

“Is there a problem here, gentlemen?” Ichigo asks in careful, precise Italian, even as he adjusts his grip on the cat. It’s struggling, gnawing on his wrist and ripping at his arm in an attempt to escape, but a touch of hierro means the beast’s efforts are in vain.

The men skid to a halt. Glance between him and his gaggle of students. Clearly label him not a threat even as the largest takes a menacing step towards him.

“Hand over the cat,” the man demands.

Ichigo’s students snicker and edge back a bit to give him space, elbowing one another and whispering in Japanese; the clear dismissal seems to bother the men, but Ichigo doesn’t bother to shush them.

(He… might have a reputation still.)

Ichigo hums and glances down at the cat still angrily trying to gnaw his wrist off, then back up at the men. “I don’t think it wants to go with you.”

The man grits his teeth and holds out his — scratched and bleeding — hand in demand. “Its wants are immaterial,” the man says. “Thank you for catching it, but we need to return it home.”

The cat yowls at that, all anger-fury-terror at the option, and Ichigo tucks it more carefully against his side. This close, he can feel the whisper of not-a-cat leaking from the creature; whether it’s a person trapped in a feline form somehow or someone experimenting with a skill like Yoruichi’s, they’re not quite good enough to hide their personhood from him.

All the more reason to refuse to hand the person over, honestly.

“Sorry guys, but I think we’ll have to agree to disagree about that,” Ichigo says with a shrug, and then doesn’t wait for a response. He darts forward. Trips the first bruiser and lays out the second with a sharp jab to the stomach. Ducks away from a grab by the one with blue power and elbows the man in the side of the head. Applies a careful burst of reiatsu to make sure they all stay down, and turns back to his students with the — suddenly very quiet — cat still tucked against his side.

His students clap.

“Don’t tell anyone about this and I’ll buy you all ice cream,” Ichigo bribes them without remorse. Not that he expects this little event to go entirely unreported; one of his students will talk to a friend, the friend will talk to another, and soon enough the whole story will be blown entirely out of proportion and add another tally on his record.

“Yeah!” “Alright!” “I want mango!”

Ichigo snorts and jerks his head in the direction they were headed before their interruption. “Well, come on then. Two scoops for each of you, whatever flavors you want.” The cat in his arms makes a grumpy noise, and Ichigo snorts in amusement as he strokes the cat’s head. “None for you. Ice cream isn’t good for cats, you know.”

The cat growls and tries to gnaw on his wrist again, less like it means it and more like it’s just trying to make a point.

“I’ll get you some tuna and water when we’re back in the hotel,” Ichigo promises as he hitches the feline higher and attempts to make it at least a bit comfortable. Still, he’d rather not give it a chance to escape, so he doesn’t try too hard as he starts moving down the street with his students in tow.

It’ll forgive him eventually, or maybe not.

Honestly, he doesn’t really care.

“If you alert the hotel staff and get us kicked out, I won’t call my friend who can probably get you out of that shape,” Ichigo hisses into the not-a-cat’s ears as he and his gaggle of students finally approach the hotel. And then to his students he says, “Students, remember your promise. Not a word about our newest friend to anyone here, understood?”

“Hai, Sensei!” comes the ragged chorus of voices, many muffled by ice cream or gelato.

Ichigo hums and carefully positions himself towards the center of his group, letting the bodies of his students obscure the fact that he’s carrying a cat into a hotel that probably has a ‘no pets allowed’ policy. His students are of course entirely up for this harmless bit of rule-breaking, no doubt looking forward to seeing the cat later when he’s checked it over.

(Given the not-a-cat’s rather persistent attempts at mauling his arm, he’s pretty sure he’s also going to need to rescue a perfectly average stray in order to entertain the class.)

At least Not-A-Cat seems to be cooperating. Except for continued half-hearted attempts to chew through his wrist, the little beast is entirely quiet as they pass through the lobby and proceed down the hallway to the elevators. Where they have to wait, because there are only two elevators and he has nearly twenty students — a quick head counts confirms he’s not missing anyone yet — that need to reach the fifth floor.

One eternity later — in which Not-A-Cat graduates from half-hearted chewing to a serious effort to bite through his hierro — and Ichigo has finally managed to usher all his students back to their rooms and washed his hands of active chaperoning duties for the night.

If they need him, they know where he’ll be.

He unceremoniously drops Not-A-Cat on the hotel chair and grabs a washcloth to wipe the smudges of dirt and spit from his arm. “Hope you didn’t chip a tooth on my arm,” Ichigo tells Not-A-Cat as he settles down on the bed next to the chair. “Not sure how that would transfer over to your human form when we get you out of that.”

Not-A-Cat yawns very pointedly in his direction, wide and long and obnoxious, but it’s more than enough for Ichigo to see that nothing’s wrong with Not-A-Cat’s teeth, at least.

Which is a relief, because the more chance he’s getting to look at Not-A-Cat, the more he dislikes what he’s seeing.

Not-A-Cat is hunkered into a defensive loaf, body trembling now that the danger is gone. Its red-orange fur is ratty, with odd patches of white fur scattered all over, one of the largest splashed right across its face.  It looks little better than an alley-cat, which… doesn’t bode well for the person the cat originally was.

“Got a name?” Ichigo asks as he sets the washcloth aside and eyes the room, wondering what he’s going to use for a water dish. There really aren’t that many options, but… he’ll figure something out.

Not-A-Cat very pointedly yowls at him, tail lashing and ears back, as if to say ‘I’m a cat, how do you expect me to talk?’

Ichigo huffs a laugh. “Have you even tried to talk yet?”

“Course I fuckin’ h— what the fuck?!” Not-A-Cat practically shrieks, voice softer than Yoruichi’s despite the pitch.

Not-A-Cat scowls at him, eyes narrowed and ears back, but all it does is make him look like he’s pouting. “Yeah, yeah, don’t get smug, trash. How’d you fucking know…?”

“I have a friend who can.”

“That friend get trapped in another form by a fucking Mist high on superiority?”

“No, but she has a technique that lets her turn into a cat at will,” Ichigo says as he arches an eyebrow, confused by the mention of a ‘mist high on superiority’ but content to leave it be for the moment. Now wasn’t the time to poke his nose into another society’s definition of ‘empowered human’, though given his luck…

Well. He’d deal with the fallout when it came.

If it came.

(He was getting pretty good at stopping issues before they became issues, if he did say so himself.)

“Why the fuck do you think she could help, then?”

Ichigo shrugs. “If she can’t then Hat’n’Clogs can. He’s good at unraveling mysteries.”

Not-A-Cat’s tail thumps against the chair cushion in frustration, and their voice is sullen as they say, “Fuckin’ fine. Whatever. Name’s Xanxus. If you don’t follow through on getting me out of this shape, I will find a way to fucking end you, trash.”

“Nice to meet you, Xanxus,” Ichigo says with all the weaponized pleasantness he’s learned to muster as a teacher. “I’m Ichigo Kurosaki.”

Xanxus scoffs and looks away, hunkering down further into the chair as he mutters, “Yeah whatever… didn’t you fuckin’ promise me food?”

Ichigo inclines his head and rises to his feet. “I did indeed. If you promise to stay put and not make trouble, I’ll see about getting something for you, hm?”

“Whatever, trash. Better not keep me waiting long.”

“I’ll try not to,” Ichigo says in amusement, thoroughly reminded of some of the ‘trouble’ students he’s had in the past. Whoever Xanxus is, Ichigo has no intention of letting him fall back into the hands of the people searching for him.

Even if it means calling Hat’n’Clogs up to work out a way to smuggle a feline back into Karakura.

Well, it’s not like Urahara doesn’t owe him one for the latest round of ‘fix Shinigami fuckups’.

(They’ll figure it out.)

Okay, yeah, your logic is sound I can roll with that. 

With a growl of frustration,Xanxus rakes a hand through his hair, shoving it back, and then turns. He scansthe grounds in a long, careful sweep, but even that isn't enough to ease thetightening knot of tension in his chest, the pulse of alarm that’s growing outof his control. It’s enough to make him want to blow up the mansion, go on therun, and he hates it.

The last time he felt like thiswas his confrontation with Timoteo beneath the Vongola Mansion, and if it getsany worse Xanxus is going to claw his own skin to shreds just trying to escapeit.

And then, light and soft andswift, there's a footstep.

Xanxus wrenches around, Flamesof Wrath surging to hungry, violent life, both of his pistols aimed in half aninstant. His heartbeat triples, races, and he locks eyes with a steady browngaze and snarls, “Who the fuck areyou?”

The man—younger than Xanxus, butnot by much—raises his hands, like that’s any kind of gesture when he’s here, in the middle of a base full ofassassins and surrounded by guards, without any hint of having raised an alarm.

“Easy,” he says, and despite thebright orange hair, that’s Japanese. Xanxus frowns, and the stranger freezes,then curses. “Damn it, of course they wouldn’t—uh, English? I can—”

“Japanese is fine,” Xanxus sayscurtly, in the same language, and tightens his finger on the trigger. “Butyou’d better use it to explain what the fuck you're doing on my property beforeI put a hole right through you.”

There isn't so much as a flickerof fear on the stranger’s face. He glances at Xanxus’s guns, then back at hisface, and says, “You’re in danger. I'm here to help you.”

Xanxus barks out a laugh, roughand angry. “Help me? Shithead, I'm more dangerous than any fucking thing youthink’s coming after me.”

Brown eyes widen, and thenamusement flickers across the stranger’s face. “Maybe,” he says, and beforeXanxus can do more than bristle he adds, “Backup can't hurt. And I know who is after you.”

Xanxus hesitates, but—that’s apoint. Lussuria and Viper haven’t heard of any threats, because they would haveinformed him, and hiding from the intelligence officer of the Varia and one of the Arcobaleno isn'tsomething most people manage, especially when Xanxus is the target.

“Names,” he orders, and doesn’tlet his guns waver.

“Look,” the stranger says,faintly exasperated, and his hands come down. Xanxus tenses sharply, but thestranger just flicks him an unimpressed look. “It’s a long story. And it’sabout your father.”

If that was an attempt to calmXanxus down, it does exactly the opposite. He snarls, takes a stride forwarduntil the stranger is looking right down the barrel of the closest gun, anddemands, “What the hell do you have to do with Timoteo—”

“Not him,” the stranger says evenly, holding hisgaze. “Your real father.”

Part 2 of Feral Home

"Voi, let me get this straight." Squalo's poker face is a joke, Xanxus can tell he's about to burst into laughter. "You went out to beat up some civilians." The length of the silence manages to make Xanxus feel embarrassed. "But you ended up stomping all over a Home's territory while at it."

"Fuck you." Xanxus crosses his arms. "How was I supposed to know there was a Home around?" Usually they mark their territory, there's nothing like it here. 

Mammon nods absently. "Somebody hid him away. Well enough I didn't sense him." Injured or not, the injury is recent enough. This is a second blow to the Mist Arcobaleno, and far too close to the first one. 

"Meaning he likely has at least a few elements. Powerful ones." Leviathan sounds pleased at that but it only makes Xanxus feel more nervous. 

"Yes." Squalo snorts. "And we just kidnapped their Sky."

"We're still in his territory," Xanxus protests but hunches in a little at Squalo's unamused look. "I want to court him."

"Voi, of course you do." Squalo drops his head in his hands. "You couldn't pick one of those your old man sent our way. You had to go for the civilian whose territory you were messing with!" 

"This one feels compatible." Xanxus crosses his arms. "And he wasn't afraid to stand up to me."

"Ok, fine. We're courting this one." Squalo slumps. Shitty boss had to pick the complicated one, Squalo refuses to be surprised. 

"How does one court civilians?" Xanxus's question rings loud in the sudden silence. 

Squalo groans. "We're screwed."

Leviathan whips out his tablet. "Don't worry, boss. I'm starting research."

At least it gets Xanxus to perk up. Squalo stands up and leaves them to it. One of them needs to remember that this Sky likely has elements who are going to be coming after them. Not the best way to start a courtship. So Squalo secures their hotel floor as best he can before stalking outside. He's ready to go out and hunt these people down but he ends up coming face to face with an unamused teenager before Squalo can so much as cross the street. "What?" He'd kill the asshole but there's no way of knowing how Xanxus's new infatuation will react. And Squalo isn't trying to make this harder on his Sky.

"Where is he?" There's something about the kid refusing to look up from his phone that lets Squalo know he's about ready to call for backup. 

Well, Squalo thinks wryly. At least Squalo had the sense not to cut him down. "Being looked at by our doctor. Our boss thought he was injured."

Something about it must amuse the brat because he lowers the phone. He's still angry but he's no longer worried. Squalo is not comfortable with that sort of confidence. The brat shrugs, taking a step back. "Good luck."

"Good luck?" Squalo hurries after the stranger when he starts walking away. "What is that supposed to mean?"

"You'll find out." The guy waves him away. "Consider it payback for stealing my best friend from under my nose."

Civilians. Right. Squalo clicks his tongue. "We'll handle him." It gets him an amused look that Squalo ignores. "What's your name?"

"What's yours?" The brat shrugs. "See you later."

Squalo ignores the cue, following the stranger still. "Squalo Superbi. Now yours."

"Mizuiro." He doesn't give his last name. "What do you want with him, anyway?" 

"My…" 'boss' might scare the civilians, Squalo guesses. "My friend likes yours. He wants to court him." 

At that, Mizuiro laughs.
