Ichi the Witch ch.1 thoughts

Listen. I know I said I wasn't going to do this, but I literally have thought about this chapter every day this week, I've got to say something about it!

This may or may not become a regular thing, though I think I'll be more willing to let a chapter slide now and then than I am with Undead Unluck since I don't want this to detract from my ability to write for UU

I'll probably just do a couple notes rather than deep-dives for this one, but we'll see how it compels me as it goes on

For now, though, I just want to point out a couple of things that stuck out to me

Ichi the Killer Hunter

The idea of "Death for Death," that life should be respected and only taken for the sake of survival (whether that be to gain food or eliminate a threat), is pretty obviously the central tenet of this series, but it's the way Ichi himself treats it that strikes me as interesting

He finds a creature, Uroro, he isn't familiar with and decides he wants to hunt it, but doing so arbitrarily violates his code of ethics. So instead of just going for the kill, he takes the time to set up contingencies for if he ever gets the opportunity and then, immediately upon hearing that men can kill said creature and women can't, decides to goad it into attacking him

Sure, it was already threatening another human, so one could argue that was enough to justify it for him, but even then, it was only once Uroro started actually attacking him that he declared the requirements for Death for Death had been met, and he eagerly retaliated

My point being that Ichi does not come across as a noble hunter with a deep respect for life; he comes off as a serial killer waiting for the opportunity to shout "self-defense!" so no one can question him

And I love that about him

It's like having Dexter Morgan for a shonen battle protagonist; this guy loves killing, but there are rules, and failing to abide by those rules would just make him a monster. Now, it is just chapter one, so there's going to be plenty of opportunity for Ichi's character to expand far beyond that point, but I promise you the line "killing things you don't mean to eat isn't hunting, it's murder" is going to come back in a major way sooner or later, and most likely it's going to be a mirror held up to Ichi's own life

Hidden Depths

Of course, that's just my interpretation based on how he's presented. Overall, this chapter was surprisingly vague, doing very little to establish Ichi outside of his past and basic philosophy and even less to establish anyone else in the world. We don't learn the name of the village girl that said goodbye to Ichi, we only learn the name of the Witch's Association (Mantinel) by reading it in the background, and we only get brief glimpses of three witches with two spells between them

Clearly, we aren't meant to have a complete understanding of this setting yet, nor its characters. We got the barest explanation of how the power system works (though it is certainly an interesting one even with that), and zero clue of what the goal of the story is

Even Uroro, the ostensible King of Magik, a millennia-old rampaging force of nature, is never actually depicted doing anything onscreen. We can assume that what we're told is true and he is that powerful, but in terms of combat ability, he simply tanks damage from Desscaras because she literally is unable to hurt him, and then dies in one hit from Ichi

This begs the question: how strong is Ichi? If Uroro is explicitly weak to men, then Ichi wouldn't need to be particularly strong to take him down. However, if Uroro is simply vulnerable to men, then Ichi's ability to end him so quickly is indicative of skill and strength far beyond what one would acquire just living in the mountains for a few years

Then there's the brief battle with Desscaras, wherein Ichi cracks her barrier; was this because of his own strength, or a strength boost from obtaining Uroro? Either one is perfectly likely, but based on the narration and his ability to beta Uroro at all, the implication seems to be that Ichi's physicality really does make him far more formidable than he would otherwise appear

But again, that could all just be smoke and mirrors to hide that Ichi isn't all that strong, and that he's only noteworthy because he's able to use magic at all. I doubt that's the case, but it's definitely a possibility. I certainly expect something from this introduction to wind up getting turned on its head somewhere down the line, whether it's Uroro or Desscaras not being as strong as they were reported to be, Ichi being abandoned in the first place because he's some kind of monster, or even that the male inability to use magic is an outright lie, I'm confident that something here is meant to be misleading

Tonal Shift

Hell, even the first chapter is pretty misleading in and of itself. The first three-fourths of the chapter range from somber to intense, with a little bit of comedy sprinkled here and there, but the moment that Ichi reveals himself to Uroro, the tone changes pretty much completely to being comedic

Uroro's reactions to Ichi are goofy, Ichi dispatches of him quickly and with a look of pure childlike glee in his eye, and then the ensuing conflict with Desscaras is chock-full of face faults and pratfalls. It's suddenly so lighthearted that it almost feels like a different series, like it wanted you to think it was going to be super serious only to say "psych, we're silly!"

Mind you, I have no problem with that, I'm just saying that there's a good chance it speaks to Nishi's intentions with the story overall and that she's likely willing to pull the rug out from under us at any time

But again, that's just my initial impression. Once we know more about the characters and have the feedback loop and goal of the story established, my viewpoint is sure to change pretty dramatically, even if only in the sense that everything I've said so far is in much clearer focus

Whether Ichi the Witch holds my attention well enough to justify consistent reviews is absolutely up in the air, but it's been a hot minute since I last read a manga whose first chapter grabbed my attention to try in the first place, and that's gotta count for something

i want more "zero to hero" type games to play but most of them range from "too harsh with deaths" to "wrong genre", or are simply unfinished or unpolished.

strong examples are project zomboid, cataclysm DDA, monster menu, unreal world, dwarf fortress adventurer mode, and even to a degree, bethesda formula games (elder scrolls, fallout, starfield)

i love all of these games, but none of them completely scratch the itch; zomboid, cdda, urw, and dwarf fortress are all extremely harsh with "you died, start over from scratch" and varying degrees of being unfinished or unpolished, while bethesda games don't exacly fit the formula. the main issue, i think, with bethesda games in this regard is that your power floor is so much higher that you're not really starting at "zero", you're starting more at "demi-hero" and becoming just a god.

which brings me to monster menu, a game I've pined over in the past, because i think it's an extremely strong example of this archetype that's just got so many little issues holding it back. the fundamental design of "keep going into the dungeon and get just a tiny bit stronger each time" is a tried and true one, as it literally encapsulates the entire roguelite genre, but i think what separates monster menu from other roguelites, to me, is that you start practically useless and you get imperceptibly stronger with each attempt - your gains come as trickles, little boosts as you eat meals, with the only jumps coming in new gear. for most roguelites, your self improvement comes in chunks; you buy an extra heart upgrade which is so massive from your 3 heart base, or you buy new permanent gear that gives massive boosts to subsequent runs. each individual run is defined by two things: how much character investment you have (if that's even applicable), and what random drops you get during the run. in monster menu, your runs are defined strictly by your personal strategy, what gear you've amassed so far, how much nutrition you've got from food, and what foods you choose to focus on during your run. unlike other roguelites, you can generally expect the same range of ingredients on a per-floor basis; for example, floors 1 and 2 will always exclusively be made up of peepers, floors 3 and 4 will be exclusively fowl, 5 will mix peepers and fowl, 6 will add on lizards, and that's how it goes until the boss on 10. then on 11, in a new biome, you'll encounter lizards and big bugs, and so on so forth; your runs are decided less by random drops and more what you decide to do with the random drops you get. fowl will drop meat, eggs, or flour flies - this leads to four separate possible ingredients (as flour flies can be used as bugs or turned into bug meal), and indeed, some of the most useful ingredients. then, finally, when you complete the dungeon or die trying, you lose all your food buffs, keeping only your gear and any food nutrition you picked up from your meals; you get slow and steady permanent progression, and occasional and chunky temporary progression. to me it works much better than having all progression be occasional and chunky.

anyways there i go lauding monster menu again. i just wish they'd release another one. please nippon ichi I'm begging you

Also one super-stretch thing I noticed at the start of fire force that could be "proof" that the prequel nonsense was planned from the start - Shinras childhood tv hero wasn't Charisma Justice but a generic one. Why not keep the cameo going, unless you want to make it so he only exists as a comic by SE (B.ichi being a failed prototype doesnt count) I know, maybe sounds stupid but I guess its something lol🤷‍♂️

My rebuttal: why was Shinra, as a little kid, wearing a Soul Eater shirt? That was around the same time Shinra was playing superhero, and basing it on the Kamen Rider-esque TV hero rather than Charisma Justice. 

I argue the Soul Eater shirt undermines the assumption that the prequel was planned from the start--or, at best, that Ohkubo kept mixing the message, tossing in stuff that is obviously Easter eggs because it would not fit in the prequel timeline (Excalibur dolls and the Excalibur face appearing in the anime; the Soul and Maka faces on Maki’s flames; Akitaru’s Eibon mask) and keeps conflicting with the actual prequel stuff (Inca looking like Kim; Vulcan designing what becomes the Soul Eater Excalibur; the Moon). 

And even if Charisma Justice was the TV show Shinra watched? Not that I think B Ichi fits this timeline, but that manga first introduced Charisma as just a TV show that Shotaro watched, then in the same chapter reveals Charisma is real (or, rather, is being impersonated by someone but presented as real)--which seems to shock enough people that Charisma isn’t just a fictional TV character. And this is further emphasized when Rodigy doesn’t recognize Charisma at all when he shows up in person. I’m not saying Rodigy should know who a children’s TV superhero is--but it is weird that he has zero clue who Charisma is, and no one around him bothers to say, “I thought he was fiction,” or, “Hey, boss, my kid watches his show on TV--and I saw him on the news, he helped save the Prime Minister!”

we cant access the headspace well enough to play dnd together but heres a quick rundown of who would be what based off what i know of us. 

Kevin: his main dnd character is a half elf rogue named Rosa and a Tiefling necromancer named Zerreus. Chaotic neutral. 

Raz: he’d be a chaotic good Tiefling. Class im unsure, maybe rogue or barbarian. 

Zero: He’d be a drow warlock. True neutral. 

me: I’d be a bard or something. Not 100% sure. abt the rest.

So do all the Ghidorahs need to eat gold regardless of what scale color they have or do other colors get other materials? Like a silver Ghidorah that needs to eat silver or a black one that needs to eat obsidian. Do the Dorats even have other scale colors? Idk I just can‘t get the image of a jet black Ghidorah out of my head…

In some of the supplemental material for KOTM (I think the profiles on MonarchSciences.com?) Ghidorah's scales are described thus:

"Monster Zero's dermal layer is gilded with trace amounts of aurum (See Ark Record # 73.126). Metallurgical studies theorize the scales act as a conductor capable of carrying bioelectrical currents through the creature's body."

With "aurum" being the Latin word for "gold," so they're really just being pretentious by using it here. Considering that the gold performs a specific biological function—allowing Ghidorah to use/control electricity (and probably make his lightning/"gravity beams")—it's unlikely that the Xiliens would go through the massive bioengineering effort of switching out a dorat monster's scale color AND scale gilding material AND the one singular food item they need to eat in pure form AND the entire way their electricity powers work, perhaps even necessitating getting rid of the electricity powers altogether...

Because like it's really that complicated, y'know? It's not like JUST changing the color of their scales. Altering their scale color from gold to obsidian might mean they need to eat silica (the main ingredient in obsidian), BUT their body isn't specifically wired to need pure silica, so they can eat a mouthful of sand mixed with dirt and plants and crap and get what they need instead of being dependent on the Xiliens—UNLESS the Xiliens overhaul their digestive system specifically to prevent that... but that's a lot of effort for a cosmetic change, so why not just stick with gold?

So yeah, other Ghidorahs still need to eat gold—probably. All the ones made in King Ghidorah's time do. There's a possibility that in the millennia upon millennia since him, the Xiliens have refined/altered their control mechanisms and moved on to new techniques, but if so King G doesn't know about it. (And if I went with that, I'd need a logical reason for how/why the Xiliens decided to make that change. Not like some airtight can-be-replicated-IRL chemistry explanation, just something a little more concrete than "oh... the aesthetic.")

Slight differences in appearances are possible, though. They only need enough trace amounts of gold in their scales to conduct electricity. They could have different "base" colors with a little translucent sheen of gold dusted on top of it.

Natural dorats don't need a full coating of actual gold in order to control the weather, due to the fact that they're just pets the size of large dogs and have no interest in weather control. So while they will still have that slight gold overtone, it doesn't need to be as thick, and they've got a bit more color variation. Here's the range I give for them and the original colors for Ichi, Ni, and San before they're ghidorafied:

"[...] the colors they come in, from pale jade greens to citrine oranges to a thousand different shades of yellow, gold and neon and amber, to warm silvers and pearl whites."

"Noodle [Ichi] has pretty white-ish gold scales, and—like many near-white dorats that are more gold than silver—he also has awful flakey sheds that come off in strips and tend to cling for days, which makes him a far less appealing pet than most dorats as pale as him."

"Sunshine [Ni]—named for scales so bright yellow they’re almost fluorescent"

"Pineapple [San]—named for his unusually rough brownish-gold scales and their faint undertone of green. [...] The jades and pearls might be a hit with pet owners; but they’re easy to breed for with the right parents, while you don’t know if you could recreate Pineapple’s scales if you tried."

(All their names are dorky because I really wanted to hammer home that, before they were King Ghidorah Monster Zero The Golden Demise Demon Of The Galaxy, they were supposed to be dumb harmless snake-shaped kittens. If some dude named Monster Zero is destroying a planet it's like, oh, yeah, that sounds right; but if it's three dudes named Noodle, Sunshine, and Pineapple, then it's like... who hurt you?)

It's worth noting that the references to jades and citrines are just describing their colors: they're jewel-toned but not actually jewel encrusted. Natural dorats might have trace amounts of real gold in their scales (since Astro-Monster says gold is comparatively abundant on Planet X), but that can't just be swapped out for any other shiny metal/rock—it's an actual part of their biology.

Yes ichi is soft but everyone misses the like thing he'dactually most likely do as a dom. If anything I think he'd just do soft petplay with a partner. I mean it was basically confirmes he'd like a partner to wear that one cat outfit in that official art where i believe they're all wearing what they want to see someone else in. I’m speaking based on what we’ve seen of his personality in canon and the show, especially when he’s not around his other brothers. I just can’t see him as wanting to be the one ‘in charge’ since the idea of ‘leading’ causes him to feel a lot of pressure.

If he was into petplay, which sure, he could be, he’d want to be the cat lmao. We see him always wanting to be a cat, always saying he wants to turn into a cat, ect.... I have honestly seen zero evidence of him wanting to dom aside from the Ichi-sama skit he did towards his brothers.

And as we all know, how he treats his brothers is not the same as how he’d treat a partner. I think he’d be too creeped out to try something with his partner that he did with his brothers as a joke.

Yakuza staying as turn-based rpg's from now on isn't a loss. It actually feels like a natural progression. Plus, if the games going forward are still going to be following Ichi, it only makes sense for them to stay turn based because the system was introduced because that's how he views the world. He's a massive Dragon Quest nerd.

I have literally zero issue with this path going forward because the devs are rock solid trustworthy and don't do anything half-assed. If this was Konami or Sonic Team or some shit, then I'd be worried.

They storytelling, minigames and sidequests, art, music, and jokes were just as solid as ever in 7 despite the genre change. There's no cause for concern here.

And let's be honest, the genre change was lateral and very slight. The series was mostly rpg anyway. The only thing introduced was turns.

Hopefully, other rpg devs will look at 7+ and realize "Holy shit, you mean you can make a turn based rpg without a medieval or magical setting?! And it doesn't need teenagers?! And it can be sleazy and modern and funny as fuck?! And the main quest doesn't have to be to save the world?! Lemme try that!"
