Happy Belated Shimakutuba Day which was on September 18th.

On September 18th, we celebrate the amazingly diverse languages across the Ryukyu Islands. Even within the same “language” or “town”, you’ll find different words, accents, and ways of speaking being used. Sometimes they aren’t mutually intelligible! While we included three language varieties in our post, there are many more!

There are restaurants in this city, but Gon didn’t feel like sitting down yet despite his stomach’s insistent growls, his mind acutely focused on his objective of first finding a place to stay.

Until his nose smells that whiff of a soup broth. Before he thought about it, his feet has already brought him into the interior of the shop, finding himself a seat beside a girl slurping on noodles noisy.

The aroma of the noodles and soup is too fragrant, and his stomach growled again. A hand is raised and his mouth forms the words easily. “Mr Chef! I want the same as hers!”

It’s only when the chef acknowledged the order that Gon turns back to the girl. “Hey, is that really that nice?”

“Ichariba choodee.” she says, raising her pint up to Kiryu. “Karii!”

“Karii.” Kiryu returns. “What does the rest of it mean?”

“Once we meet, we’re like brothers and sisters.” translates Naya, “It’s just an expression for meeting someone and just knowing you’ll be friends. Mum always says it’s because your souls recognize each other from somewhere else. I just think it means all of us have been hurt by our condition, you know?”

or: kiryu gets to know okinawa and realizes there is no escape from pain.

As if I needed more fics. But this has been preying on my mind ever since I started Yakuza 3. As I’m currently pursuing my Ph.D in Okinawa Studies, I really want to try and write something that was a love letter to my existence in Okinawa.

Stitch! Episode 1 Ichariba Choodee

//Found family dynamics are truly the best. I will accept any and all familial relationships on this blog. There’s a saying in Uchinaaguchi-

Ichariba choodee

It roughly translates to, “Once we meet, we’re family.”

And that’s how it is with the Higas. Once they meet someone, that person’s a part of the family. This especially goes with Ushi, but even for all that Kamado is distrustful of others, she loves her found family, too. Just because the two of them are the only blood relatives they have left (in the US, at any rate) doesn’t mean they can’t build a family of their own.

It's not a Japanese phrase, it's an Okinawan-Ryukyuan phrase. But it is indeed a beautiful phrase that is very often true in the Ryukyu islands. Though it is more akin to, "When we meet, we are brothers/sisters (family)".

To deconstruct this, "ichariba" (more literally, "if we meet/met [by chance]") comes from the verb "ichain (行逢ん)" which means "to meet by chance" and "choodee (兄弟)" is the word for "siblings" or "brothers and sisters". Note that the sentence literally reads "If we meet/met, siblings" and that it has no verb. This is because the verb is implied, something you also see in Japanese (e.g. "良いお年を" which means "happy (new) year" is one such case, where the implied verb is "お迎えください" "have a/spend a").
