"Um…" it's a hesitant start when the conversation topic trickles down into nothing, perhaps purposefully so as their responses became shorter. Something seemed to be on her mind, and as such, that something ended up gnawing on their mind. Another few seconds pass, unsure of how to word their concern, if they should word their concern, but in the end, they take a breath. "Are you alright…? You've been looking at your phone a lot, and you look kind of restless… If there's anyplace you need to be then it's fine with me if you go there, don't worry about me. But…if it's something else, then I don't mind listening. As long as you are fine with sharing, of course." ( HELLO YEONG
Oh, where to begin? The bombing of her family house? losing the last of her family? knowing something she wish she didn't know? Realizing that her life could be ... fake?
Did ... grandma loved me? Did she really loved me like her own? or was it the guilt of what she had done to me? Caleb! What about him? Did he know? Was his death in vain, too? All these questions keep prying on her mind the moment she let her guards down.
What is she?
Even Zayne kept that a secret from her.
Who can she really trust?
No ... she is too cruel on them if she thought they never loved her or cared for her. She knows it is true. No one can fake that much love she felt for the past what 8 years or more? Grandma raised her like she was her own and Caleb was there as her irreplaceable big brother. Zayne, well he was there for some part of her childhood then their fates decided a little detour before they come back into each other's life.
Digging into what had happened was the only thing that kept the gears in her mind working. Who and why would someone deliberately bomb her house. All clues lead to one .... one and only--Onychinus. If she is going to get answers then the best way is to find their leader and well, extract her answers from him. one way or another.
She was waiting for a confirmation from one famous artist to take her into where she could find more about Onychinus when Akira's voice rang to snap her out of her trance.
"--Ah! Oh, um ... sorry," hiding her phone into her pocket, she clasped her hands tightly. What was she doing ... she was out with a friend and look at her, ruining the mood.
"Sorry, you were kind to arrange this trip and here am I, thinking of something else beside how to eat these wonderful velvet cakes!" there was a forced grin plastered on her face. A blind person would tell how much she is trying to force a happy and excited vibe.
There is no need for more people to get involved. She didn't even tell Tara about this not even Jena, her boss. Akira is a civilian and what would do him if he learned about this? He'll just worry endlessly about her. I mean ... he is now but the less he know the better. In case she failed, that's a probability, he wouldn't be in danger.
"Come on! Let's eat and continue with the course, yes? We still got uuuh... the cat hat tricks shop to see! Aren't you excited? I heard that the cat cafe in the market district is actually there, too! Miser Vilho brought some of his cats into this magic show! aaaa!!! I hope he brought Vitalis~ He does not like me for some reason but I like him~ hehehe."

"..... are you looking for this, soul reaper?" the female arrancar trills out to the concerned looking shinigami around a triumphant, cutting smile (tinged with blood) that charmingly crinkles the pretty crescent moon mark under her glittering-obsidian eye. she proudly holds up the last remaining limb of the new-born hollow that had been unlucky enough to cross her covetous path before a-yeong could peacefully exorcise; akin to a cat showing off its most recent kill.
the moth woman was positively preening, unable to help herself.
the recently severed appendage was now just a ribboned ended sallow-hued chunk of flesh, having been torn into violently with teeth-gnashing gusto & efficiently whittled away to near nothing. the redhead absolutely loved nibbling on the tails last if they were available, considering it a desert of sorts after her main course, which hadn't been very big this time; just dart-fast & reptile-esque. a tiny lizard that seemed to have caused more trouble for the soul society member rather than veera herself.
which was pleasing in it's own right.

They’ve been walking for a while-- doing their basic “correctional” duties... as any good employee should! There’s a certain pep in their step, occasionally causing for them to skip like a dog that’s so excited that it actually trips over itself. Only, well, obviously Ji Soo doesn’t trip. They keep going, precisely because they didn’t trip.
Wherever their current destination was, too, remained to be seen. At this point, it almost seemed like even they had zero clue where they were going. There were a few twists and turns (unnecessary but exhilarating all the same!) with the occasional pause (with them turning their head in random directions, blinking and smiling before proceeding.) before continuing onwards. This was normal... for them, anyway.
They were quiet, grinning whenever an inmate would lock accidentally lock eyes and be subjected to the familiar game of, “Okay! I Wave First And Then You Next!” with no way out. An awkward wave, a helpless glance to another guard that seemed none the wiser... All in good fun! It was, in Ji Soo’s humble opinion, one of the easiest -- but nowhere near perfect -- ways to make friends. They liked it that way, because it didn’t require any of that nasty and downright gory messy detailing... which was why they were heading straight to the restroom, of course.
Obviously. That’s where they were always heading to.
And it’s when they finally approached the sink, lathering their hands in several, thick layers of soap (it’s a minty green, tinted a gross brown once it bleeds into the red covering their hands.) all the while, that they raise their head. They do not look over their shoulder, because they don’t need to.
All they needed was the mirror in order to look at her.
Tumblr media
“U~uuuummm...” they hummed, holding their hands under a steady (if somewhat aggressive.) stream of water that turned hotter and hotter by the second, “...you’re not an inmate, huh?”

To me Alchemy of Souls is very much a “they’ve been dead from the beginning” story
Like,,, Cho Yeong died that day with the rest of her family, Master Lee declares her dead and Kim Dojoo even holds a jesa for her.
Naksu dies, if not the moment she shifts her soul/has it stolen, then in ep18 when she lets go of the ice stone and chooses to live a normal life. She herself even says in ep5 that “now Naksu is also dead”.
Hell, she even lives as essentially a vengeful ghost. A cold and empty existence, her only purpose to avenge her family. The entirety of s1 is about her learning to live and want to live which is what makes her fate so tragic.
Jin Buyeon died in the womb and later, the girl that was born through the power of the ice stone, is thought to be dead by everyone save for her mother.
(Nice parallel of Cho Yeong & Jin Buyeon where Jang Gang, like Jin Ho Gyeong, obsessively looks for a little girl thought to be dead by all but him, because of his grief and guilt)
And even her name belongs to a woman’s dead granddaughter. Though I’m only looking at this through a s1 perspective, Jin Seol Ran, Jin Buyeon’s original identity, has also been all but dead for centuries.
A twice over dead girl, inhabiting the body of another dead girl, uses the name of yet another dead girl, and shares a body with a two centuries long dead woman.
She was never going to survive. How much she changed, everything she did, was all futile in the long run because she died long before the story started, there was never any saving her, she was dead from the very beginning.

"sun, what're you listening to?" you sit next to your boyfriend, laying your head on his shoulder as you watch his fingers sliding across his phone. "here.." he mutters softly, putting the right earphone in your ear. you smile and move closer, closing your eyes as he plays your favorite song.
"you hungry again? do you want a midnight snack?" he whispers, reaching his arm out and wrapping it around you as you shake your head. "noo.. just tired," you frown, tilting your head more towards his shoulder.
sunoo giggles a bit, leaning back into the couch and opening his arms. "here, here~" he smiles, gently embracing you in his arms as you adjust into a comfortable position. "what happened when you were out with your friends earlier?" you mumble while nuzzling sunoo's neck, closing your eyes as he excitedly yet softly started babbling, his hand slowly untangling strands of your hair.
since he knew you liked listening to even his little nothings, he would tease you slightly by blowing gently on your hair to keep you awake, adding a few kisses onto your forehead as an apology when you tell him to stop. it goes on for a few minutes, until he notices your breathing is steady, assuming you're already asleep. he pecks your cheek slightly, curling up a bit to get enough warmth around you both.
"sun, now i want a midnight snack. can we get ice cream?" "eh? but i can't move anymore, y/n!"

So it's always been a head-canon of mine that after Uk and Yeong finish hunting for relics, it would be Yeong that becomes Gwanju, the protector of the 4 families and Daeho as a whole.
Obviously the natural pick is Jang Uk except...he wants absolutely nothing to do with either of his fathers. Just as he tosses aside the royal medallion that could open a path to the crown, I think Uk would find it difficult to accept a position that's been reserved for him primarily because of the man that ruined his mother's life. Additionally, Go-won needs to urgently increase the damaged trust between Daeho's citizens and authorities. Jang Uk, who is likely still feared by many due to the powers of the ice stone and his general emo-ness (he was pretty vocal in the last three years about not caring if the world burned to ash and he did commit mass murder, even if his victims were all corrupt), is probably not the optimal option for this.
Yeong, however, has no such reputation. Even though she's probably more vicious than her husband, the public only knows her as a sweet, kind, incredibly powerful priestess. She also happens to have a strong connection to the four families, acting as one of the King's closest advisors, a guiding hand for Songrim as she helps Yul find and train his pupils, and is always going to be a sister to Jinyowon's heir Cho-yeon whether or not she reveals that she's not actually Jin Bu-yeon. In effect, she's already fulfilling the role of Gwanju and protecting Daeho, which I think is a great narrative conclusion for her: growing from wanting to destroy in revenge to using her innate sense of justice to protect. In any case, I think Yeong would want to return to Cheonbugwan anyway to carry on her father's craft.

"Ah! You almost got it!" a gasp and despair flowing through their voice when the colorful plushie falls down again, so engaged in the game they might as well have been playing it themself. "You can do it, Yeong...!" (hello guess who unlocked the crane game
"Come on ...Come on," her focus is on the plushie she wants. Tongue sticking out like a kid, focused on their drawing. "No ... nonononono! NOOOOOOOOO~!!!" hands slam against the transparent window then slide down in despair. Yeong drops on the ground, sniffling.
"Aaah.... *hic* nooo. Why have you forsaken me, plushieeeeeee~!!!!" insert a dramatic moment. Arching down to repeatedly slam at the ground. "I really wanted to get this for you ..." her initial shock of losing was soon replaced with unparallel determination, Yeong snapped back and jumped back on her feet.
"ALRIGHT! I'm not a quitter! Granny didn't raise a quitter! Let me at it again!" inserting more coins to resume her hunt for the colorful plushie. Hunter instincts kick in and viola, after a couple of times the plushie is hers!
Tumblr media
"TAAADAAA~!!!! Ha ha! You're not escaping Linkon's best hunter, hehe~" she raises the plushie up high like the scene from a certain movie. "Now," she leans and present her trophy for her new friend. "I bestow this upon you, Akira." a grin cross her lips. "Thanks for cheering me."

Fear is a huge driver of plot in Alchemy of Souls and most of it is centered around Jang Uk and Naksu. Almost every character's main motivation is fear except Naksu (revenge) and Jang Uk. (This is long)
Park Jin is terrified that Jang Uk will fulfill his destiny because his main goal is to maintain social order. He is therefore fully committed to impeding any progress Jang Uk might make. His turning point (finally) is the near death of Seo Yul, probably not because he actually loves Yul or Uk for themselves, but because as everyone acknowledges, Seo Yul being killed by Jin Mu will overturn the social order (General Seo will invade Daeho Fortress and start a war). Park Jin knows Jang Uk will try to save Yul, so he supports him.
Tumblr media
(I'm pretty sure the only major decision he makes motivated by love is trying to save Maid Kim from Jinyowon, everything else is to preserve social order. He's extreme lawful good)
Go Won spends most of S1 trying not to be afraid of Jang Uk/the concept of a King Star, because he doesn't want to be like his father who is terrified of the prophesied King Star's existence. Jin Mu eventually succeeds in making Go Won afraid which results in Jang Uk's death (it doesn't take). But then in S2, with a Jang Uk who is 100x more terrifying, Go Won realizes that he doesn't have to be afraid because Jang Uk doesn't want to be king and will use his power protectively:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which means that Jin Mu can no longer control Go Won through fear, as he is able to do with the king and basically everyone else.
Jin Mu definitely fears what Jang Uk might become, since he can be displaced from his position of power if Uk ever becomes a real mage.
Tumblr media
And yet, he mostly makes other people afraid of Uk instead of really fearing Jang Uk himself. This is probably because Jin Mu believes that compassion and protection are signs of weakness. I think the only time he really believes Uk might kill him is when Seo Yul is dying. What he fears the most is being rejected by those in power, which is why when Go Won turned on him he was so angry.
The king and the Unanimous Assembly decide to release the fire bird because they both fear and envy Jang Uk and his ice stone. As for the general population, they generally fear super-powered Jang Uk but also want him around (just not like, too close) because they are more frightened of soul shifters. They both fear and idolize Naksu and are manipulated with their fear.
And to quickly include Lady Jin, her fear is centred around losing control of Jinyowon, which is why she searches so desperately for Bu-yeon, is dismissive of her under-powered second daughter, and is so determined to keep resurrected Naksu/Bu-yeon under control.
Seo Yul is complicated because he doesn't know what Jang Uk is until pretty late in the game, he mostly is afraid of what Jang Uk is doing (hanging out with a soul shifter, Naksu herself) and what his beliefs will result in (which to be fair was a legitimate fear given what happens at the end of S1). He is also afraid of breaking his personal moral code:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then we have Maid Kim, who is literally never afraid of Jang Uk, she just loves him no matter what. By S2 she knows exactly who he is and that he's haunted by ghosts and she does not care. "Oh my super-powered adopted son is home to spend a haunting night, let's make sure he's comfortable!"
Tumblr media
What she is afraid of is Naksu: she thinks her sword is ominous, she holds a funeral for Cho Yeong so that Naksu's spirt won't attack Jang Uk, and she fears that Naksu will drag Jang Uk to the grave in S2. However, her fear is never centered on herself, she's pretty much only afraid because she wants to protect Uk (like mother like son). Which is why she's one of the good characters, her fear isn't selfish.
When it comes to Naksu/Cho Yeong and Jang Uk, they are never really afraid of each other or really drive by fear, unlike everyone else. Jang Uk recognizes Naksu right away, isn't afraid of her threats at all, and then sends men to capture her. He's almost immediately willing to put his life in her hands.
Tumblr media
His motivation is more to prove himself, which is both about himself and his mother whose memory he is trying to protect by convincing people that he's Jang Gang's son.
Cho Yeong's motivation in S1 is revenge at least at first, which she needs her powers back to have. But then she switches to protection and remains that way through S2.
Naksu doesn't have any reason to fear Jang Uk in S1. Then in S2, even when she has no memory of who she is, she is very much not afraid of him. Even when he threatens her:
Tumblr media
She takes like a whole minute to let go and step away from him. And when she sees the ice stone, she decides to try and use him rather than retreat in fear.
But of course all Naksu/Jang Uk plot is driven by both of them running straight towards things that they should fear, including each other. They are the antithesis of living in fear, they chose protection and love (and constantly being in mortal danger) instead.

Let’s throw out all our previous assumptions and look again at what happened 200 years ago.
Things we know:
Jin Seolran and Master Seo subdued the firebird to stop the drought and created the Jin vault as its prison
Jin Seolran did the tansu dance to refill the big lake and rivers and also created powerful ice stones (yes, plural)
Ice stones were used to create many magical relics, including soul ejectors which came to used to perform the alchemy of souls
The Great War broke out as the Choi family vied for power
Many people willingly and unwillingly switched bodies due to the alchemy of souls
Master Seo destroyed all but one (known) ice stone
All other magical relics were collected and imprisoned in the Jin vault
Mage Choi was permanently locked in a prison created by Jin Seolran
Jin Seolran was dying
Master Seo loved Jin Seolran but did not send his hidden ‘love letter’
Hypothesis:
JIN SEOLRAN WAS IN LOVE WITH 'MONSTER' MAGE CHOI AND LOCKED HIM AWAY FROM THE WORLD TO SAVE HIM & MASTER SEO DID NOT CONFESS HIS LOVE FOR JIN SEOLRAN BECAUSE HE KNEW IT WAS UNREQUITED.
Like innovative technology today, sorcery can be used for good or it can be used for evil. The philosophy of Songrim that any use of sorcery is bad comes from its founder, Master Seo. He created a whole school to train mages with his values to try to keep the peace. He also allowed himself to be banished by the King. Master Seo is a rule follower. Like present day Seo family member, Yul, was Master Seo only willing to bend the rules and not break them? Would Master Seo really be willing to break the rules to save the woman he unrequitedly loves, Jin Seolran?
However, Jang Uk thinks there is nothing wrong with using sorcery to save a loved one. His philosophy is use whatever means necessary, as long it doesn’t hurt others in the process. Jang Uk also doesn’t believe everyone labeled a ‘monster’ truly is one. Instead of killing them, he will fight to keep them apart from the world if they can’t live in it. Which brings us to the odd choice of Jin Seolran locking a single Choi mage in a prison that Naksu immediately notes does not seem like a prison instead of killing him. The Choi family is blamed for starting the Great War in their pursuit of power. Their family was demoted and exiled. What if Mage Choi was Jin Seolran’s lover and in trying to find a way to save her created the alchemy of souls? What if his family got ahold of this spell and used it for their own means to gain power? What if he did succeed at saving her but both of them became ‘monsters’ in the process? What if, to keep the peace, they locked themselves together in the expansive alternate dimension ‘prison’ with the official story being that he was being punished and she ‘died’?
While the story has alluded that Naksu/Cho Yeong and Jang Uk are the next incarnation of Jin Seolran and Master Seo, there doesn’t seem to be a one-to-one correlation between the people 200 years ago and the people in the present. First off, Cho Yeong is not from the Jin family and Jang Uk is not from the Seo family. However, there are many descendants of the Jin, Choi and Seo families in this story. To even get these two in position to be the next incarnations, the alchemy of souls spell had to be done successfully twice (Bueyon was brought back from the dead in utero and Jang Uk was conceived via a soul shifter) and unsuccessfully once (Buyeon trapping Naksu’s soul). Naksu only gained access to divine priestess powers by being in Jin Buyeon’s body. While Master Seo and Jang Uk both have King’s Star power, they are complete opposites. Jang Uk saves monsters, ardently confesses his love, and breaks rules like its his job. The Choi family and Naksu ended up in exile after the alchemy of souls was used in their family. Seo Yul has unrequited love for Naksu the way Master Seo had unrequited love for Jin Seolran. The same elements are there but they are mixed-and-matched differently. So the ending should be different too.
Predictions:
Seo Yul will be the leader of Songrim.
Even though Master Seo was effectively banished from the capital, it’s interesting that the whole Seo family resides far away as well. Honestly, smart, wise, rule following Seo Yul seems like a much better match to lead the school his ancestor started. In the beginning, I mistook him for Park Jin’s nephew due to their interactions. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Songrim is a school without students with Danggu in charge.
The Jin vault and its relics will be destroyed.
This vault is a Pandora’s box waiting to spring open. Master Lee has been going around the kingdom destroying all the relics he can find that are outside of this vault. Jang Uk has also destroyed quite a few of the relics that have been removed from the vault. I find it odd that Master Seo with his extraordinary powers didn’t destroy more of these relics and instead helped horde them together giving the Jin family alot of power. It’s why they always need someone powerful to defend it. Tying the women down to only marry men with no assets of their own. But if the vault and its relics were destroyed, it would keep Daeho safe with no chance for power hungry mages to use the relics to take over the kingdom. So if Choyeon didn’t need to defend the vault anymore and Danggu stepped down from leading Songrim, they could put down the things that have burdened them most of their lives and happily get married. Also, it would free up Danggu to become the businessman he is meant to be.
Jang Uk and Cho Yeong will be free to live in the world together.
If fate went to this much trouble to make them the next incarnations of Master Seo and Jin Seolran, I think it’s to fulfill what their predecessors could not. It’s the universe’s second chance to get it right. Before there was unrequited love, death, and exile. Now there should be reciprocated love, life, and acceptance in society. The two biggest differences between then and now is Uk and Yeong love each other and the crown prince is on their side. These two factors could turn the tide. I’ve seen the theory that they could be appointed Gwanju which makes sense because they are the most powerful protectors the kingdom could have and they now have the trust of the crown prince (aka future king). These two have led traumatic lives cut off from their place in society. They deserve to heal and finally become a part of it.
I am an eternal optimist but I am bracing myself for a tragedy. As long as the Hong Sisters make it make sense, I will respect the ending.

“I liked him more than he liked me. But I never had the chance to tell him.”
One of the wishes that I had for this drama was for Jang Uk to fall in love with Jin Bu Yeon before he knows she is Cho Yeong/Naksu... and I got that, and more. However, with Naksu’s temperament, I was fairly sure that when she regains her memories, she would stay away from Uk. He died by her hands, even until the last moment, he was still protecting her, shielding her. In the time that she stayed by his side, she saw the extent of Jang Uk’s grief, the sadness he has been carrying, nursing, in the last 3 years. The guilt would just be too severe, too great to stay by his side. Knowing that she will soon vanish into nothing just reinforces this decision.
Tumblr media
From the very first meeting, Jin Bu Yeon always invaded Jang Uk’s personal space, to a man who has emotionally shut the world, brooding, grieving, embittered, no one can get in, and she arrived and bulldozed her way in. She never failed in making him flustered. He was such a prick but she tore that thick ice cold wall brick by brick. Jang Uk slowly fell in love. Now he is yearning, pining, his heart breaking, not understanding why the woman who forcefully pushed her way in to his heart is rejecting him.
Tumblr media
Her falling apart after he left is extremely heartbreaking... devastating!
While fate brought them together each time, fate is also cruel to them.
