Zack nods sagely, humming as he looks over each answer. He looks like he's putting intense thought into this decision. Eyebrows furrowed and lips pursed, his finger skims over each word.

Is there a chance he'd deny this application? Absolutely not. But it is fun to tease a little.

He beams brightly and puts the application in his pocket.

"Congrats! You've been accepted as a Valentine. I'll see you for dinner."

"Wake me? Nah." Zack gave a soft smile, a hand going to ruffle Cloud's hair like always. "I was up anyway."

A lie. But one he was happy to tell.

"Wanna sit for a while and talk? That usually helps me after nightmares."

The truth was, Zack didn't sleep much anymore. And when he did, it was light and restless. Cloud startling him up was nothing new. Even if he was totally fine, any little inconsistency or any little thing could be enough to wake him.

It was a shame. He was so close to finally getting good sleep.

"Or I could just sit here and be your human weighted blanket. Whatever works."

Help him. He's dying. He's facedown on the floor and dying. Look at him. He's miserable.

A small groan came from Zack, chin propping up on the floorboards. "It's so hoooooooooot... Someone kill meeeeee..." Even with the dinky rusty fan, he was melting. "Anyone have Ice Materia.... pleaseeeeeeeee..."

"What? No." Honestly, he was taken a little aback. He was talking to Kadaj, wasn't he? Why would he assume he wanted to find someone else?

A little hurtful, but maybe that's just something Kadaj is used to.

"I just wanted to talk to you. Learn more about you." Zack gave a small smile. "I'm not here to fight, if that's what you're assuming. I'm just curious."

He laughs and kisses him oneeeeeee more time. "If they have a problem, they can fight me." And another kiss!

For all the thousands upon hundreds of times that he told Cloud he loved him, it wasn't often that Cloud answered in kind. At least, not out loud. Cloud showed him he loved him in little ways constantly: making him food, holding him close, getting adorably jealous whenever someone attractive talked to him too long... There were countless ways Cloud showed his love.

But the little moments when Cloud said it out loud were branded onto heart.

He pulled Cloud close, weak breaths brushing against Cloud's ear. His arms stayed wrapped as tight as he could with what little strength he could muster. "I've always known, Spike..." His smile, gentle and earnest, couldn't be stopped. "I've never doubted that for a second..."

"I am?" Zack sputtered, a hand covering his rapidly blushing face. "I mean... thank you, Cloud. But I, uh, I dunno if that's really what I am? I mean, that's a pretty big responsibility... being the best thing to happen to you."

Zack glanced down at his own dog before rubbing the back of his neck. "Do... do medium-sized dogs count for ya? I mean, Storm's not that big but he's also not really 'little'..."

Zack’s too nice. So much so, it induces all sorts of guilt in Squall if he’s remotely mean. Having an innate need to remedy the awful sentiment, he decides on something he knows he’s good at for a ‘thank you’. it’s how he winds up blocking Zack’s path and gesturing aimlessly while asking, “Do you like—food? I can cook pretty well and I wanna say thanks for… everything so far.”

"Yeah! Who doesn't like food?" Zack tilted his head like a confused, if excited, puppy. He didn't really know what Squall was thanking him for but who was he to stop him. "What were you thinking of making?"

She didn't have to ask. She never once did. He always craved her and the things she did to him like a starving man food. Aeris held more power over him than the gravity that held his feet to the earth and yet he danced light as air if she willed it.

As his mako blue eyes stared down through his lashes, Zack's voice almost caught in his throat.

Almost.

"Please," his voice was hardly fit to be called a whisper in her ear, "Aeris, I don't just want you, I need you."

Hands torn and scarred over time tenderly hovered over her shoulders, like they were afraid to transfer his old hurts to her unblemished skin. "Don't leave me hangin', buttercup. Good boys get rewards, right?"
