Networking for introverts

80% of jobs are filled through personal or professional connection. 70% of jobs aren’t advertised on job sites.
These are US stats, but it’s a universal truth: candidates with a strong network have a significantly better chance of getting a job or promotion.
😓 My head knows this, but the thought of networking makes me break a sweat.
I’m an introvert. In a crowded room, I choose to melt into the background. When chatting, I speak too quickly because I’m nervous. I have limited hearing which makes conversation difficult in a noisy room.
So, I avoid events and functions. When I do turn up, I stick to the people I know and look for an excuse to leave early.
It’s baby steps, but I find the following tactics useful:
👍 Embrace the Power of 'Yes': I RSVP to invites before I have the chance to come up with an excuse to pass. My KPI is to say 'yes' more times than 'no' in 2023. Once I accept, that stressful situation is over, allowing me to concentrate on the next steps.
🧘‍♂️ Master the Art of Deep Breathing: I take deliberate, slow, strong breaths. Controlled breathing reduces stress, it allows me to speak more clearly and listen more intently. Breathing helps with good posture, boosts confidence and projects positive body language.
❓ Be Insatiably Curious: Instead of dwelling on my own nervousness, I divert my focus to others. I find something I like about a person and compliment them. It’s an effective ice breaker. When you’re in conversation, be curious about them: what they do, their accomplishments, their stories. When I’m curious, I’m a better listener and a better conversation partner – who doesn’t want someone they can talk to about themselves?
🏋‍♂️ Play to My Strengths. While I work on improving my in-person networking skills, I continue to leverage the channels where introverts often shine: - LinkedIn: publish posts, articles and comment on interesting content - Blog: continue to blog at thangngo.com - Email/Teams meetings: Every interaction, no matter how small, is an opportunity to network. I approach these opportunities with curiosity, a willingness to help, and respect for others.

Friction in AI journeys
In physics, we learn that friction is a necessary force to generate forward motion. If our feet had no friction against the ground, we could slide in place, doing the running man through the end of time. If tires had no friction, they would skid and have no control, flying across patches of ice. Friction, in our physical world as in the internet world, is a necessary force for forward progress.
What struck me about Prof. Gosline's article about friction in AI customer journeys was the focus on agency and humans. Yes, reducing friction can help to increase business KPIs like conversion, eyeballs, engagement time, etc. But at the end of the day, we are builders of this world and enablers of technology. We cannot build systems that we become beholden to (though once could argue that we already have in some ways). As builders and purveyors of technology, we need to center the users, the people, the human beings that ultimately will consume it. Being reminded of the need to do so ethically, thinking first about impacts on lives and second about revenue, is a useful regular practice that we should adopt to feel the weight of our responsibility as business leaders.

Assess the advantages and / or disadvantages of having more than one source of performance measurement within a company.  Support your position with examples.  Of the performance measurement sources you provided, select one that you believe your current or previous company could benefit from and explain why. Class, when we discuss performance measurement in HR we must be very specific in what we are discussing, and defining, as it impacts on what we measure.  There are many types of performance measures that HR can draw upon such as, MBO, KPI, and Metrics.  You know measurement is only accurate if you are measuring the right thing.  For example, if you wanted to know how fast a car was going in the US you would measure MPH v. KPH.  Measuring KPH would give you a number, but the number would not be accurate because it does not answer the question.  When you look at picking a performance management measurement you must consider how that measurement supports the business unit’s, and organizations, goals.  Now, herein lies the problem having
