The Igbuzo (Ibusa) Kingdom:: Tracing the Roots of a Brave Igbo Community in Delta State, Nigeria"
Igbuzo, also known as Ibusa, is a vibrant Igbo community nestled in Delta State, Nigeria. Its roots can be traced back to around 1450 when waves of Igbo migrants embarked on a journey westward, ultimately leading to the formation of Igbuzo.
The name "Ibusa" is derived from "Igbo bi n'ụzọ," meaning "Igbos that live by the wayside" or "Were you the first to settle here?" This moniker was bestowed upon them by neighboring communities such as Ogwashi-Uku, Asaba, Oko, Ilah, and Okpanam, as well as European missionaries who struggled to pronounce the community's original name.
Historians believe that a group of settlers who embarked on a journey from Benin alongside Ezechima, heading eastward, may have found their final settlement in Igbuzo. It is speculated that these settlers, either due to illness or a lack of interest in continuing their journey, assimilated into the existing Umejei and Edini groups in Igbuzo.
Ibusa comprises two distinct units: the Umejei and Ogboli settlements. According to oral history, Umejei Nwa Eze Isu, the prince of Isu, was involved in a wrestling bout that resulted in the death of his opponent. Traditionally, this act was considered an abomination punishable by death. However, Umejei's father, the king of Isu, commuted his son's sentence, and Umejei was exiled with a gourd given to him by his father. He was instructed to settle wherever the gourd dropped, leading him to establish Igbuzo at the present site of Ani-Oshe in Omeze.
In another tale, Odaigbo of Nshi (Nri) had relations with one of his father's wives, which usually carried a mandatory death sentence. However, Eze Nshi spared Odaigbo's life and instead exiled him, accompanied by his father, mother, and younger brother, Edini. Each of them carried a pot and charms, instructed by Eze Nshi to settle wherever the pot fell. Edini's pot landed at Ani-Nshi (Nri) Ogboli in Ibusa, while Odaigbo's pot dropped at the current site of Ogwashi-Uku, where he settled. The groups of Edini and Umejei eventually merged to form Ibusa, with the Ogboli community becoming part of the larger Nri (Nshi) community.
Ibusa is renowned among the Igbo and Anioma people of Delta State for their courageous spirit, often described as "Isu (Igbuzo) fu ogu ju nni," meaning "Ibusa people who refuse food to fight wars." This statement exemplifies their bravery in times of conflict. Researchers are currently delving into the history of wars fought by the Igbuzo people, particularly in the homes of their kinsmen in Nnewi, Anambra State, to uncover any historical connections between the two communities.

Alleged child trafficking: Policeman narrates how stolen children were recovered from couple
An Investigating Police Officer (IPO), ASP Desmond Apella, has told a Federal Capital Terrritory, FCT, High Court that stolen children were recovered from a couple charged with child trafficking. Apella was testifying as the third prosecution witness (PW3) before Justice Peter Kekemeke in a case of alleged trafficking in children preferred against Ifeoma Abonyi, 32, and Emmanuel Onyekwere, 32. The charged the duo with conspiracy and child trafficking. The offences, the police said, are contrary to sections 30(3) 97 and 273 of the Penal Code. Apella told the court that he was on the team that investigated the matter. He said that in November 2019, a man, Thomas Olobo, wrote a petition to the Inspector-General of Police over the disappearance of his 17-month-old child. The witness said during investigation, the complainant told the police that the defendants, who are his neighbours, asked if the baby could accompany them to the market. “The complainant granted the request and the first defendant took the child. “They never returned the baby and the second defendant who claimed to be the first defendant’s husband equally disappeared,” he said. The witness told the court that the police later traced the defendants to Ibusa, Delta State, where they were arrested. He said the investigation revealed that the defendants were operating a syndicate on child trafficking. ”We found out that the defendants had sold the baby to someone in Aba. “We rescued the baby and reunited her with her parents. “We also discovered that this is what they do. We also rescued six other children from them,” he told the court. NAN reports that Abonyi was reported to have absconded leaving the 2nd defendant to face the matter alone. The second defendant did not have legal representative. Justice Kekemeke therefore promised that the court would contact the Legal Aid Council to get a lawyer for the defendant. He then adjourned the matter until March 19, for cross examination of PW3 and possible continuation of the trial. Read the full article

By • Olalekan Fagbade BREAKING; President Tinubu approves take-off of six Federal Universities President Bola Tinubu has given the approval for the commencement of academic activities of six out of the 14 new universities established in the last days of President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration. The Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, made this known on Wednesday, after a closed-door meeting with President Tinubu at the State House, Abuja. Prof Mamman stated that the initial phase will involve the launch of two universities in the field of agriculture, two as colleges of education, and two focusing on the field of medicine. According to him: “There are very many, probably about a dozen of them, if not more than a dozen or 14, that’s the number and you know tertiary institutions are highly capital-intensive, they need a lot of money, especially at that take-off stage, for infrastructure, staff recruitment and all other needs. “By the time you want to start about 12, 14 institutions at once, it is a very heavy burden on the finances of government.” The minister affirmed that these institutions are strategically aligned with the key mandates and priorities of President Tinubu’s administration. Dr Mamman added: “Ordinarily, we would have said we’ll review whether we should go ahead with that, but most of them are specialised institutions; colleges of education, agriculture and medicine; they are institutions that will support some of the mandates, the priority areas of this government. “We will need trained teachers, which colleges of education will provide; the same thing with agriculture. That’s why the government has not stepped down that approval; instead, the President, in his wisdom, said we should stagger their implementation on the ground of funds. We’re starting with about six, two each of agriculture, colleges of education and medicine.” Some of the universities established during the said period are David Nweze Umahi Federal University of Medical Sciences, Uburu; Federal University of Transport Daura, Katsina; Shehu Shagari University of Education, Sokoto; and Admiralty University Ibusa, Delta State. The minister mentioned that the President also approved the completion of the National Library which has been projected to be completed in 21 months as the nation’s depository. “On the National Library, a national monument, I briefed the President about the need to get it completed. He is happy with the proposition,” he affirmed. #TinubuapprovestakesofsixFederaluniversities

4. Ese
I am new in town. I moved to Port Ibusa two months ago and the logical thing for me to do was to visit the only person I knew in town, Ini.
Ini and I go way back. We were friends at UniKas and have kept in touch in however way we could. I called him up on Sunday and he said that I should come by his office on Monday during lunch hour.
Monday came, I went to visit him, we went out for lunch and we got talking about a lot of things. I told him about my work situation: I'm a freelancer and he told me about his client, Belema. Most of that lunch consisted of me trying to explain why at 34, I am unmarried and without a stable job while he told me about how perfect his life was.
I wasn't jealous but you could say a tiny bit of me was irritated. Yes, I know he manages one of the biggest stars in Benueria but that doesn't mean that our entire conversation should consist of that.
But whatever, that was what the lunch was about and then he said, "since you aren't seeing anybody, why don't I set you up on a blind date with Belema."
"Excuse me?" I replied nearly choking on my tea. Yes, I drink tea at noon. Cold tea, you should try it.
"He's single too and you are his type," he said it this time using his eyes to scan my body.
"Is he my type?" I asked.
Ini chuckled and said, "he's famous," like that was enough to be my type. I rolled my eyes and agreed because, why not?
