Day 0 - Part 2 - Welcome to Lima
Tumblr media
We boarded our flight and I sat with Austyn. On the previous flight, she had begun watching baby driver. We started watching it together but we paused when announcements started. This was the perfect time for another nap. [Nap counter: 3] when I awoke, we were still on the ground. Lots of delays, including that the plane was too heavy so they had to kick people off. I didn’t know that was a thing that happened.
They eventually kicked enough people off that the plane could fly and we headed to Lima! We finished watching Baby Driver then I fell asleep again, then woke up, then fell asleep. [Nap Counter: 4, 5] Later on the flight, I needed to palette cleanse with a comedy film and Austyn picked out Next Goal Wins, a hilarious soccer film where Taika Waititi could be effectively cast as every character. It was an excellent film, highly recommend!
It was dark in Lima when we arrived, but the night was lit up by advertisements, the most prominent of which was a giant shoe.
Tumblr media
We were met by our travel company at the airport and driven along the Pan-American Highway from the airport, in Limas Callao district up to our hotel in Miraflores, another of Lima’s districts. Lima is big. Like, 11 million people big. It was about an hour drive. So I took a nap, naturally. [Nap Counter: 6]
We checked into the hotel and attempted an elevator selfie on the way up to our rooms on the 7th, 8th, 12th, and 13th floors.
Tumblr media
The 12th floor had a nice view!
Tumblr media
The hotel was identical to the Ibis hotel my dad and I had stayed in Berlin, so it was a very familiar sight! Despite all my naps, I slept like a rock.
Tumblr media
Join us tomorrow to hear about how we had mixed drinks and stood in traffic!

"Sweden" but on an Organ -- Ryan Pagels, cover of the song by C418
I've never played Minecraft, so I first encountered the C418's "Sweden" through a solo-piano cover by ibi berlin. It's already such a wonderful song, so both the piano and organ versions are very lovely.
I think it's well-suited for the pipe organ, because of its sustained chords that meander and sway. The natural reverb gives the song a better emotional impact. It also makes up for the lost string section.

Vienna Zoo, known as Tiergarten Schönbrunn, is one of the largest zoos in the world, opened in 1752. This imperial-era building combines medieval Europe with modern times. The reflections of the Baroque style, which is the famous architectural style of the period, can be seen in the octagonal breakfast pavilion. This unique work, which reflects only a part of the magnificent architecture of the city of Vienna, is one of the most eye-catching places in the modern world. There are elephants, koalas, giraffes, giant pandas and many more creatures in the zoo. More than 4,000 animals live in the Zoo. Schönbrunn at the Vienna Zoo is the only place in Europe where you can see pandas, with the exception of the Berlin Zoo. Yang Yang and Long Hui, representatives of endangered species in the zoo, were placed in this zoo in 2003. Thus, a new one has been added to the unique natural beauties of the zoo. The zoo is located on the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace. The zoo also has a rainforest and an aquarium. Many activities and of course thousands of animal friends are waiting for their visitors in the zoo where people of all ages will have a pleasant time. This garden has been one of the frequent destinations of both Vienna residents who want to spend good hours on the weekend and millions of tourists coming from outside the city. Daily feeding times are held in the zoo. Visitors can have the opportunity to mingle with our lovely friends during these hours. Thus, everyone will experience a lot of fun and exciting moments. Daily feeding session times: 10:30 - Sea Lions, 11:00 - Northern Rockhopper penguins, 11:30 - Humboldt penguins, 13:00 - Small-clawed otter, 13:30 - Bald ibis, 14:30 - Great anteaters, 15:00 :30 - Sea lions, 16:00 - Koalas. Visiting Information: The Zoo is open every day of the year. Although the closing hours of the garden, which opens at 09:30 in the morning, vary from month to month, it is usually between 16:30 and 18:30. Entrance fees are 20 Euros for adults, 10 Euros for children and the disabled, and free for those under 6 years old. Address: Maxingstraße 13b, 1130 Vienna Directions: You should get off at the Hietzing stop on the U4 line for transportation by subway. You should use lines 10, 58 and 60 for the tram. If you are going to travel by bus, buses 51A, 56A, 56B, 58A will take you to the zoo. Nearby Places: Original Vienna Tours, Villa Schopp, Antonio Vivaldi Monument, Hietzinger Friedhof.

The 100th day of the war. And the people
One very tired man, one night in a train station, point blank asking me "I don't know where to go. I don't know what to do anymore. Where would you advise me to go?" Sir, it's almost midnight. Right now you're not going anywhere. We are transferring you to a place where you can sleep. Tomorrow you'll decide.
Olena, who exchanged phone numbers with me. She jokingly told me to register her number under "Olena the refugee". That was how she introduced herself. The next day when she called me she said "Olena from Ukraine". The Ibis hotel wouldn't unfreeze the 100 euros deposit she had to make. I had to call them two days in a row for them to give back the money they owed. They blocked my phone number. Joke's on them, I had another one for work.
Vitaliy's mother who told me her two years old son kinda looked like Khrushchev.
One Nigerian and his very pregnant wife who wasn't feeling well. We called an ambulance for her and while we were waiting the man was asking the Red Cross volunteers "so if my wife were to give birth in France would the child receive french citizenship?"
Galya, 8 years old shouting "Mom, that man is called Olivier like the salad"
A woman with a big bandage on her finger telling how her cat escaped from his cage during their transfer in Berlin, how she grabbed him by the tail because the train was about the depart and how the scared cat scratched her so strongly she basically had no skin left on her middle finger. And what caused her distress wasn't the pain but the fact that she mistreated her cat.
That very sweet old woman in a wheelchair. She told me her name and I forgot it. She also told me that when she read the Gospel when she was young she used to cry thinking about all the suffering Jesus endured. "But God saved me and led me here to safety".
Sasha who was going to Barcelona, who just finished school and did not know what to study at the university, and who asked me "Why are there so many Asians in Paris? Did you get invaded? Are those migrants?"
Svitlana and Karina, from Kharkiv, desperate and so very very tired. They had spent ten days on the roads of Europe, gone all the way to Madrid only to discover that there was nothing prepared for welcoming refugees, and now wanted to go back to Germany, because they needed a country with a strong social security system. "I don't understand, Svita said, why everyone in Germany is so much kinder toward refugees than our own countrymen. You wouldn't believe how badly the people in Lviv treat the refugees from Eastern Ukraine".
Rita, 14, who wanted to know how to make friends with French teens. "It's easier to make friends when you have a house where you can invite them. Mine got bombed last week. There's nothing left."
A professor of nuclear physics headed to Bordeaux. "I've always dreamed of working in France, and my French colleagues have managed to arrange that"
That refugee who met Zemfira in a train station in Paris.
One mixed race couple who were absolutely unfazed by all the chaos of Gare de Lyon and were looking for a good restaurant because they had some time before their train.
That very old couple who absolutely refused to be sent to the Red Cross's dormitory. "We went yesterday, they said they would drive us in the morning to the train station, that we would be able to get on the train on time. They didn't, we missed the train, and now we're not going anywhere. The train leaves at 6 am, we're gonna sleep in the station and if they close the station at night, we're just going to walk around until they open it.
Anna from Kyiv. I told her that was the name of one of the Queens of France. She spent a month in Paris but ultimately decided to go back to Kyiv. While she was in France, she visited a friend who found a home in Toulouse, then went to Biarritz because she'd never seen the Atlantic Ocean, and had the perfect occasion.
A couple and their two years old daughter, Zlata, who found an accommodation in the middle of bumfuck nowhere near Brive la Gaillarde. They sent us lots of photography. They spent their first month sightseeing, as there are loads of medieval castles around.
The woman with blue and yellow ribbons in her braids, who was trying to find something like kefir in French supermarkets.
Another Anna, who tried croissants and éclairs for the first time. The croissants were heavenly but the éclairs were way too sweet and honestly she found them overrated. Croissants did deserve the hype.
A therapist from Kyiv who found a place to stay in Rouen, but is considering moving because her daughter is in highschool and she wants her to go to a reputable one. And she is shocked by how bad French students' maths level is.
Sanya, Vika and their turtle.

The Yemeni-German mélange the duo offers can easily be overlooked as an East-meets-West or fusion cliché, but it is anything but either. While Kabreet derives much of its lyrical inspiration from the Arab world, with Ibi using nostalgic cultural motifs in his artistic soul-searching, it does not look to sell itself as a ‘Middle Eastern’ band or regional phenomenon. The group is a product of an urban Berlin experience: a Yemeni visual artist dealing with the Arab world in his work decided to collaborate with a bohemian German intellectual with a love for what he jokingly calls ‘sexy Orientalist elevator music’.

Yours Entirely
Part one   She was named after a bird
How could I have missed this. Something so glaringly obvious, something so vital. Ibis has always been like you why would now be any different. She has had your gifts for years. YEARS! I have only just found out, beloved. All because one of Richard’s children wished to create tension. I can understand why our youngest cannot stand that girl. Yet I cannot understand how or why she kept this from me.
Ibis said it was so I would not grieve you more, said that a look of sorrow has glazed my face more and more these past few years. That I know is true, but I still wish she would have told me. She is all the best parts of you. She has your eyes, your personality, everything. I know she is so much more than just you but whenever I look at her I see you.
Todd keeps telling me that I need to introduce myself to her as her and not as our child, your child. That is and will not be easy to do, but I know it is what you would want. So I shall try.
I will love you forever. Until we meet again, beloved.
Yours entirely,
Damian
----------------------------------
It seems that getting to know our youngest as herself will not be as hard as I first believed. I do not know whether I should feel relieved or if I should crumble as I feel at this moment. I had not really seen our dear Ibis for a couple of days. Thanks to the job and my job. Today we got the chance to eat breakfast together before she went off to school. I cannot begin to describe the shock, bewilderment, and possible horror I felt when I first laid sight on our child.
Half of her hair was gone! Leaving only stubble behind in its wake! The other half was partially dyed a blood red! I never would have suspected this from her. It does seem very her though, and I cannot say that I love her any less because that would be a lie. If this is how she believes she can differentiate herself then I have no qualms with it. I just hope that if she marks her skin permanently that she may give me a heads up. I do hope I am better at parenting than father was. I even complimented her look, as I said it suits her. She may have been surprised but like you she has trained to not show it at all.
Many of the heroes from the league have been asking about Ibis. They now know what was long questioned and I fear for her. I do not wish for Ibie to join our line of work. I know she has voiced that she would hate being part of such things. I guess to everyone having such power and not using it for good or even bad may be a waste. I do not see it that way. I know you have told me many times of life on Azarath, a majority of not all the citizens possessed powers like you and Ibie. Not all of them used their powers for good or evil, they had them and lived everyday lives. I truly wish that for Ibis.
I know I have told you before that Grayson wishes to train her. I cannot understand why. This family has enough heroes as it is. All his children, all of Drake’s kin and even two thirds of our family; all heroes. Why can’t he just let Ibis be free? You felt free by being a hero, but Ibis would be caged. A caged bird does not sing.
Moving on from such petulant topics, Ibis is starting her last year of high school soon. Time really flies. She wishes to go into the arts, and I fully support her in that. I know it's shocking, especially since I decided that pursuing art would hinder my future. Beloved she is talented. More talented than I ever could dream of being. Not just with paint and graphite, she can write stories like I have never imagined, she can play numerous instruments just at the sight of them.
We have narrowed down the list of schools considerably, none of them close to Gotham. Close is relative truly. The top school on her list is in Providence, RI so that is not a terrible trip. The others are much farther. There are schools in Chicago, California, London, New York (though she would rather not go there), Berlin, Finland, Glasgow, even Beijing.
I will miss her truly, but she needs to find her own place on this vast planet. I cannot push her, I will not. That does not bring happiness and that is all I want for our Ibie. Happiness.
God I miss you. You would know exactly what Ibis needs, what I need. You could’ve helped Ibis so much. All I can do is try.
I love you as always and forever. Until we meet again my beloved.
Yours entirely,
Damian
----------------------------
Our son is trying to kill me. No I am not being dramatic, love. Gideon asked me today for your ring. It is not that I do not like the person he wishes to spend the rest of his life with, I do indeed find them pleasant. It's just that I haven’t thought about the ring in years. I told him that he should get his beloved their own ring. That kept him at bay, he did not question me further. Do you still have the ring? I know that is a silly question to ask, but I still wonder if you wear it.
Adira has yet to bring home anyone of any interest to any of us. I believe Ibis said that ‘Dira may never settle down. Which in my opinion is much easier than meeting any potential spouses. For the longest time though she was harboring feelings for one of Logan’s children, that went nowhere. At least Logan will never be related to us, I have to see him enough as it is.
Ibis is probably the most like us when it comes to romance and dating. She is seventeen and has never had a boyfriend or girlfriend, not even secretly. I know that eventually she may find someone, but I would like to dream a little longer. Though I do worry about her. She is definitely the most like us. She is usually in her room, or the library and she doesn’t seem to have many friends. That isn’t a bad thing, as we both know, but even we spread our wings a bit more at her age. At seventeen Adira was sneaking out to go to parties, if she wasn’t on patrol or with the Titans of course. If I was not there when Gideon was born I would say he was from Grayson’s side of the family. Do you remember all the friends he had that came to the manor when he was small? Believe or not he kept all of them and gained more. He is quite gregarious. Should I worry about Ibis?
Grayson has recruited the Kents in their attempts to recruit Ibis. I still do not understand their motives behind such a crusade. Maybe this is an attempt at bringing you back? That would prove idiotic as you said yourself you cannot come back. I am not saying that I do not want you back by my side, beloved. I do, so very much, but if it means sacrificing our child? I would not wish for that. I would much rather find a solution so both of you could be here. Not to mention Ibis is still a child (she may not see it, and Grayson may not see it, but she is). She is not even in college, she has barely seen the world. You and I both have had more experiences in our teen years than I believe Ibis will ever have, and I am content with that.
Luckily we do have Todd on our side. Who has been spoiling Ibis for as long as I can recall. Though I must say he has been quite helpful in advising and educating our daughter. Do you know how many languages Todd has in his arsenal? I ask because I believe he has equipped our daughter with every single one. She is the only one of our children that speaks Arabic fluently. Sometimes when it is just the two of us we will just speak Arabic. Gideon tried learning in college but I believe he grew frustrated with it. Adira says that if she has her portable translator why would she ever need to be fluent in a language. Where did I go wrong? At least one of our children could go out in the world properly.
I miss you. I cannot place into words how much, but I hope you can understand. I know if you could, you would be here, by my side, by our children’s side. That does not aid the ache inside of my heart, beloved. If anything it cracks it wide open.
I wish I had more time to write this to you today. Truly my dearest I do. Sadly, Grayson and Drake have arrived in hopes of kidnapping Ibis, as an attempt to persuade her. I have to call Todd. I hope you can understand. I love you.
I will love you forever and always. Until we meet again, beloved.
Yours entirely,
Damian
-----------------------------
Hi! Sorry this took awhile things have been happening with me and I had no idea how to finish this until now! I know some wanted a Damian POV, or something of the sort? I was already going to write this anyway, but the support is greatly appreciated!  I do not know if I will continue this further, but if inspiration strikes and my will is agreeable, it may happen. If anything is out of place or otherwise just let me know!
Be safe! Take care! Until we meet again!

“So, you’re at the Ibis hotel?” She asked casually as they strolled down the streets in Berlin, attempting to get used to the city, directions and names. It was pointless, Ella was sure she would get lost more than a handful of times, but she was trying her best. Having lived in New York all her life, she wasn’t exactly scared of cities, but was terrified of being late for work more than a couple times. “How is it? Mine is like... the most luxurious place I’ve ever been to? We have an indoors pool! Like– what the fuck. I want to move here forever.” || @jrzimmerman

Oligocolius
Tumblr media
By José Carlos Cortés
Etymology: Oligocene Mousebird
First Described By: Mayr, 2000
Classification: Dinosauromorpha, Dinosauriformes, Dracohors, Dinosauria, Saurischia, Eusaurischia, Theropoda, Neotheropoda, Averostra, Tetanurae, Orionides, Avetheropoda, Coelurosauria, Tyrannoraptora, Maniraptoromorpha, Maniraptoriformes, Maniraptora, Pennaraptora, Paraves, Eumaniraptora, Averaptora, Avialae, Euavialae, Avebrevicauda, Pygostaylia, Ornithothoraces, Euornithes, Ornithuromorpha, Ornithurae, Neornithes, Neognathae, Neoaves, Inopinaves, Telluraves, Afroaves, Coraciimorphae, Coliiformes, Coliidae
Referred Species: O. brevitarsus, O. psittacocephalon
Status: Extinct
Time and Place: Between 31 and 24.7 million years ago, from the Rupelian to the chattian of the Oligocene
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Oligocolius is known from the Bott-Eder Grube Unterfeld and the Enspel Maar Lake of Germany
Tumblr media
Physical Description: Oligocolius is a fascinating little bird because it is a Mousebird - a group of dinosaurs today with magnificent little crests and soft, grey appearances - but, in at least one species, it didn’t have a typical Mousebird beak. Instead of having a short, triangular beak, this bird had the dramatically hooked bill of a parrot! With a large, round head and a hooked, sharp beak, it would have been very hard to tell apart Oligocolius from a living parrot when just looking at the head. This is a clear-cut case of convergent evolution, since mousebirds and parrots are nowhere near closely related to each other. Oligocolius was weird in other ways too - it had longer wings than living Mousebirds, and shorter legs, so it was more adapted for flight than living members of the genus. Interestingly enough, it also seems to have had a crop, which is something living Mousebirds lack; this indicates that it fed on tougher to digest plant material than Mousebirds today do - meaning, it wasn’t only eating fruit like its living relatives. Instead, it was able to eat tougher to digest plant material in addition to fruit. Whether or not its feathering would have been as weird as its living relatives is difficult to say without more fossils. It is difficult to say what its size would have been, as no tail feathers are preserved and the mousebirds today are distinctive for their long tails, but it seems likely they were about as big as living forms, reaching sizes around 10 centimeters in length.
Diet: Oligocolius would have fed on a variety of plant material, rather than exclusively fruit; in addition to fruit, it probably would have favored seeds, which it could easily crack open with its parrot-like beak.
Behavior: Oligocolius would have flown too and fro in its forested environment, searching for food and spending less time perched than its living relatives. It would probably gather seeds, fruit, and other plant material from trees as it flitted about, holding and crushing the food with its strong beak. Despite being rare in terms of fossils, it was probably very social like its living relatives, forming somewhat large family flocks in the forests. It would have taken care of its young, even potentially building cup-shaped nests out of twigs in trees. It is probable that it would have been very distinctive in appearance, as its living relatives are, and used that appearance for communication.
Tumblr media
By Scott Reid
Ecosystem: Oligocolius was probably a fairly common fixture of the forests of the Oligocene in Germany, having been found in two different environments from across the epoch. It is known from primarily forested areas near bay and estuary coastlines, as well as a prehistoric freshwater lake with a variety of shore plants and swamps, so it wasn’t picky about where it ended up. O. brevitarsus, in the earlier Bott-Eder environment, it lived alongside many different kinds of birds that I’ve mentioned in articles past: the hummingbird Eurotrochilus, the barbet Rupelramphastoides, the trogon Primotrogon, the loon Colymboides, the seabird Rupelornis, the songbird Wieslochia, the tody Palaeotodus, and the buttonquail Turnipax. There were also a variety of mammals. At the later Enspel swamp-lake, there were rodents like Eomyodon, pikas, and moles, as well as crocodilians and turtles; as for other birds, there was the pheasant Palaeortyx, the cormorant Borvocarbo, and a loon.
Other: Oligocolius is closely related, but not entirely in, the group of living mousebirds. In fact, Oligocolius is one of many known extinct mousebirds, showcasing that this group was much more diverse in the past than it is today. The weird parrot-like beak of Oligocolius is just one of many evolutionary paths the mousebirds took during the Cenozoic era.
Species Differences: O. brevitarsus is the first described species of this genus, and does not have an associated head; thus, it cannot be said with any certainty that it had the parrot beak, though that does seem likely. It comes from earlier and more southward than O. psittacocephalon. O. psittacocephalon, in addition from being later in time and a more northward location, it also had differently proportioned limbs than its earlier cousin.

Still awake, playing on my phone bc I don't feel sleepy.
I've already deleted at least 5 songs from the playlist. Def need to investigate the ibi berlin piano pieces. I can never remember the titles for so many of the songs.
Wish me luck! I'm about to take more Zzzquil and try to wake up by 9ish tomorrow morning.
Bonus: I added more music to that haunting playlist, and it's like 4 hours long now. Not sure how much will stay, since I just threw pasta at the wall, metaphorically.

Toll toll toll...
Was denn sonst?
