Bit City recommendations

ok so these are a couple of recommendations i have for smosh's sketch show bit city that i think they should incorporate into the show to make it better. (these are not all of them - they're just a couple of my main ideas)

i would love for them to focus more on character based sketches and less on pop culture based ones, i think it would be cool for them to use shows like hot goss to instead focus ont he smosh character into the smosh universe, like stuff like: deep dive into krungle's dating life, etc.

if they do want to have a pop culture based section, then i think that the best way to do that is to bring back a smosh pit weekly esque show, hosted by chanse and angela instead of tommy, i think that that could work so much better. and i would personally love to see something like the teleprompter bits they used to have make a comeback.

I think that using the commercials to expand the smosh universe, like idk, have an ad for mr. pervert's coffee shop, new fred dart's single, a true crime podcast hosted by sarah christ, stuff like that, would be so much cooler imo

A MUSICAL SECTION. hear me out, i know that they probably won't be able to do this stuff every episode, but i think every other episode or every other other episode would be great, have a part of the set and have someone like josh or play a track in the background and have a smosh cast member play a character singing a song, i think this is where they could bring back some of their parody music type stuff. like sabrina darpenter could make an appearance, fred darts could make an appearance, courtney's jojo siwa impression, etc. i think it could work well.

Thought I would write something cute and fluffy🫠 dunno if I’m still able to do that 😂 I don’t even know if this have sense, but let’s try. (English it’s not my first language, hope it’s readable)

They were just about to finish recording the angry letter video and Ian was emotionally tired. He had to be composed and not show too much. He didn’t want to go emotional in front of all these people, and above all in front of Anthony because he knew that for him it was a hard time, reading all those things aloud. But that , for Ian, required lots of energy and mental strength.

He was tired of holding himself back. It was destroying his mental state again.

When they were done recording, he and Anthony headed toward Ian’s office. They needed to finish some stuff before going home so they decided to order some dinner since it was already late and they were starving. Ian was all of a sudden really quiet, all of his tension and tiredness was kicking in. He sat on his chair, closing his eyes for a bit, letting out a long breath. He then took his glasses off and his eyes focused on Anthony for a brief moment. He was taking his jacket off, mumbling something Ian didn’t quite catch. He looked genuinely happy and calm. Like he finally had the opportunity to let all his thoughts out. It’s not like they didn’t talk about their feelings after their reunion. Actually they talked a lot. About what was in their mind, about all those years apart from each other, about anything and everything . They promised to talk with each other about everything that comes on their mind. But Ian knew there was something he was intentionally not telling him. Maybe because he was afraid to open up that much. He’s always been afraid of expressing his feelings even though it was his best friend he was talking with. But he promised, so he had to be brave and tell Anthony everything that was on his mind because he didn’t want to ruin their friendship again.

His thoughts were interrupted as he saw Anthony moving closer to his chair.

“Hey man what do you want for dinner? I thought we might order something light for tonight since we have to wake up early tomorrow. I don’t wanna have trouble sleeping.”

Anthony said, looking at Ian while searching something good to eat on his delivery app.

“Mmm okay, I was thinking like a soup or something would be fine?”

Ian wasn’t really interested in the food anymore. He was actually starving when they left the studio, but now all he was thinking about was how to tell Anthony how he was feeling.

Meanwhile anthony was nodding at him, telling him that soup was a good idea and he was trying to choose which soup was better for them. But Ian wasn’t listening. He wasn’t listening when apparently Anthony did ask something to him.

“Are you there? Are you listening to me?”

Anthony’s waving hand in front of his face put him out of his thoughts.

“Yeah sorry I was just thinking. Anyway, that soup sounds great.” Gesturing towards the vegan one.

Anthony stared at Ian for a second, realizing something was up in his best friend’s head.

“Are you okay Ian?”

Ian was caught off guard, he didn’t expect Anthony to notice this quick his mood had change.

He let out a sigh and rubbed his face. He didn’t know where to start but he knew he couldn’t escape from this.

“Anthony I…I know that during the reading of the angry letter I’d never seriously express myself and it was like I was undervaluing what I was reading. But it’s not like this. I wanted you to know that even though I am so bad with emotions, I felt what you wrote on that journal. I was just trying no to break down during the recording. And it was hard not to do that.”

He pause just to see Anthony’s eyes watering. The sight of his friend crying, brought him on the edge and he found himself crying all the tears he wanted to cry that day. He immediately wiped his eyes, trying to calm himself down. With a not so steady voice, he kept with his trail of thoughts.

“I am so sorry for all the shit we’ve been through in the past. We were both so wrecked we didn’t even realize how bad we were hurting ourselves.”

His voice cracked, another tear drew a wet line on his pale skin.

“I know that during those past years I’d never took your feelings into consideration and I feel really bad for that. Because I know now that I was hurting you and I didn’t even realize back then because I was so inconsiderate and stupid. And blind…”

Ian felt Anthony’s hands on his shoulder, gently squeezing him. He didn’t even realized he had moved since now. He turned his head to met Anthony’s gaze and he was still crying, face all red and wet. But even with all those tears, he had a sweet smile on his face. He leaned closer to Ian and hugged him tight from behind. His arms around his neck.

Ian put his hands on Anthony’s, squeezing. He than stood up from his chair, facing Anthony.

“It’s okay”

Anthony softly said, gently wiping Ian’s tears. Ian closed his eyes, leaning in Anthony’s touch. The feeling of Anthony’s warm hand on his face was heartwarming.

“We both fuck up really bad, I fucked up really bad. It’s not your fault, we were both so emotionally unavailable and tired. We grew and learn from our mistakes and that’s the best thing that could have happened to us. And now we’re here. Stronger than before. Changed.”

Ian nodded and without even thinking about it, he found himself hugging Anthony. With all his strength. They stayed like that for what seemed like a lifetime and than they break the hug. They stared at each other smiling like idiots. Ian felt Anthony’s hand caressing his face, pulling back his hair just a little for him to kiss him on the forehead. Ian just melted into his touch, happy to finally be able to be more open with Anthony. It was all new and so good at the same time. It felt like a heavy weight on his chest just disappeared all of a sudden.

It was all he needed.

Anthony was all he needed.

He’s never been happier.

Smosh Releases "Submissive & Breedable" Music Video

It was announced today that viral comedians and Smosh co-founders, Anthony Padilla and Ian Hecox will release the music video for “Submissive & Breedable”, their first single since their historic 2023 reunion.

Song Artwork Courtesy of Smosh .The single which was produced by Grammy-nominated producer Y2K (Doja Cat, Yung Gravy) and features rapper bbno$, takes a hilarious approach to Padilla and Hecox’s signature comedic stylings. The music video features Padilla, Hecox and bbno$ in different degrees of submissions; while being spanked, tossed around and tied up.

FIXING BIT CITY - PART 1

okay this is a very long post and i apologise - i didn't mean to have this many thoughts on bit city but i do so i would really appreciate if you read through this whole thing and hear me out completely:

so, i think we can all agree that the smosh main channel right now isn't doing so well, this time last year, most of their videos on main had a good 1 million+ views, especially after food battle. but nowadays, most of the bit city sketches get from 400k - 900k on average views, 2024 youtube sucks is the only bit city sketch to get above 1 million views.

i think a big reason for this drop in numbers is for 2 reasons, 1. the fact that smosh put hold on all their other sketches that they were doing on the main channel for bit city, and took a whole 2 month break for it, for the end result being, well, average. and the 2nd reason being is that, well, bit city as a whole isn't the best show and while it has it's strong points, it's not a good enough show on it's own that will make your average viewer want to tune in and it's also just, not, that good. now im a big smosh fan and i only want the best for the channel, which is why im gonna try and break down the reasons why bit city isn't really working and how to fix it, hopefully if we spread this around a little bit in the smosh fandom here on tumblr, we'll be able to spread some news (ill post this on reddit as well).

okay now the breakdown. let's start with the concept of bit city, from what i've gathered, bit city is basically trying to be the 'snl'/late night with jimmy show of smosh, the all in all sketch show that has a bit of everything (like a variety show). now i don't watch snl much but from what i know of it, snl episodes have a typical format that they fall into, they start with a cold open, followed by a monologue, then 2-3 sketches, then commercial break which is where a lot of commericial parodies happen, then a musical performance, then weekend update, and sometimes an addtional performance by a musical guest, and then credits. and you can see smosh borrowing some of those segments for bit city, now this as an idea is great. i think that smosh could pull it off if they wanted to, they have a whole multiverse (literally) of characters to choose from for sketches, they have multiple cast members who are great at hosting and who are able to carry segments on their own, and they have a good enough budget to pull different parts of these segments off.

however, where smosh breaks away from the snl format is the fact that they have structured their show more like a late night show would, having a host and a guest, now this is where smosh starts to lose me a little bit. not because i hate the idea, but because, late night humour is very different from sketch comedy, late night tv's comedy typically relies on topicality (meaning the current things going on in today's society like politics, pop culture, etc.), interviews with guests and recurring segments (think mean tweets on jimmy kimmel), yes they do have sketches, but the format of the sketches is very different. that being said, i think waht smosh was going for in the end, which was a 'late night' esque show where the 'guests' are characters or impressions by the cast, is a geneuienly great idea.

where bit city starts to fail or let me down is the execution, now they cast chanse and angela as the hosts, which i do actually really like since i think they both have a lot of personality, they both are entertaining to watch, and they have a good dynamic which viewers can watch and be entertained by. so i think it was a good choice to have them be the hosts. where i think bit city starts to really lose me is, well, the bits, the sketches.

so far, there have been 6 episodes of bit city, and so far, the bits and characters that have stayed in my head and that i think are truly memorable include the one direction reunion, the "straight eye" cast, the kardashians bit and the ianthony bit (although i personally was let down by that it was very popular in the fandom so im including it), that is it. every other bit has been either average or forgettable, in fact, the only episode of bit city which i think lands on every level is the straight vs gay episode.

why? let's break it down.

bit city as a show follows a general structure, the show opens with a 'cold open' of sort where angela says something like 'XX PERSON DID WHAT?' and chanse replies with something along the lines of 'yeah bitch' or some one liner response, after that they have a bit of bantering between chanse and angela which goes on either too long or too short, before cutting to their first set of commercials, after that they return with their first sketch or bit which is typically an interview or a reunion with the 'guest' being either an impression or character by the cast, in the middle of the interview they cut to the commericals again before returning to the bit again, after the bit hits it's "climax" of sorts, then they cut to a third set of commercials, before returning for either an improvised segment with members of the cast as themselves playing games ie. straight vs gay trivia. or the 'hot goss' section where they have tommy read off a teleprompter some jokes about modern day pop culture before interviewing another guest (sometimes they cut to commercials here as well but not always), before having the show come to an end with chanse jumping over a car.

now, let's go bit by bit (pun not intended) on every part of this show and break it down bit by bit (okay this time intended).

the cold opens - imo this is one of the weaker parts of the show, i get what they're going for with it, but it just feels so dry and bland, i get that they can't do a full opening monologue and they need something to open the show in that way, but eveyr joke in the cold open section has since fallen flat for me, so really, my only advice here is get better writers or write better jokes.

the banter/improvised section - this is one of the better parts of the show which i do like (althooguh i do think that it does in some cases go on for way too long) but it's mainl because chanse and angela are such likable people that it works, recently they've started adding in some bits to this section like the rib cam and the erewhon taste testing, so i think if i have any real advice for this section of the show, it would be to a. shorten it and not make it drag on as long or b. if you're not gonna shorten it, then at least add more improvised or bits like the rib cam to this part of the show, this would be also be part of the show to bring back segments like smoffice or let's do this on a smaller scale (although ill add more about let's do this later) to have somehting entertaining for this part of the show

commercials - the commercials are one of the most disappointing part of the show to me not because they're bad, but because they could be so much more. like the concept of parody commercials in a sketch show is SOO good, for one, it can help point out flaws in advertising and commercial industry in general, but they can also just be the perfect ground space for character building ro for expanding the smosh universe, but every bit city commercial, the the humour jsut feels so, generic? and it falls so flat every time. and this falls into one of my main critiques of the show, which is, so much of the show feels like such average level humour, like this is smosh, the channel which literally thrives off of characters and over the top bits, so why aren't they utilising that? i can't think of 1 commercial which has stayed in my head or which i would call memorable in this show so far, besides maybe the straight vs gay 'straight boyfriend os' commercial (but even that cuold have been better imo). my real advice for the commercials in the show is a. cut it down, don't have 3-4 commercials in every bit city episode (especially if they're gonna be so average), but b. if you're gonna have this many, use them to expand the smosh universe. have commercials like idk, Mr. Pervert's coffee shop, now hiring, or Fred Dart's new single just launched, anything that will actually add value to the smosh universe and not just be some one off. but if they want to do one off commercials, they could also return to their 'apple product commercial' esque skecthes, like the apple vision pro sketch they did? yeah, do that and split it up into 4 parts instead of all at once, and you have 4 commercials for a bit city episode.

interviews - the interview segments have been okay so far. i liked the one direction reunion, i liked the kardashians one, i somehwat enjoyed the old smosh reunion (but im not that much of an og smosh fan so i didn't enjoy it as much as others) and i really liked the 'straight eye' cast one. i think my main critique for the interview sections of bit city is the same for the commercials in that, it could jsut be SO MUCH more. i for one would love for them to maybe do stuff like a 'smosh the sitcom reunion' with all the characters like kevin, krungle, young sebastian, chosen, etc. or a 'chosen special' where chosen gives us a deep dive into being a chosen, waht it takes to be a chosen, who is or isn't chosen, etc. these sketches in my opinion would be a. more funny than just random pop culture references, and b. interesting deep dive into the pre-existing characters of smosh. and that's not me saying that i think they need to completely erase the pop culture elements of the show, im jsut saying, lean into more of the smosh specific character work of the cast instead of focusing more on the pop culture elements, you can still have reunions like the hsm or the teletubbies reunions (which btw i think were top tier smosh sketches) but just don't make that the focus of the show. also i do think at one point having actual guest features for this section of the show could be interesintg, but seeing how things are going right now, i don't think that will be happening in the near future.

improvised 'games'/recurring segments of the show: so far, what i think they're trying to do in the second half of bit city episodes is try to have one of those 'recurring segment' bits like they have on late night tv with the smosh cast, basically where the cast and host s play improvised games, now this isn't a bad idea but imo it is kinda pointless. liek i don't hate it as a segment, but i think it takes up a lot of run time which could instead be used for stuff like, idk, actual sketches? but if they are trying to do bits like this, i think what would be better is to bring back the 'google search history/watch history' sketches they used to do for this part of the show, since it actually fits quite perfectly. also, my advice for this segment of the show to elevate it a bti more is to really lean into the audience participation part of the show, i think they're trying to do that with the 'crew stories' part but so far they're kinda falling flat/hit or miss, so i think what would be better is to do stuff like have audiecne shots liek they do in real late night tv, play games which involve the audience, or if you wanna involve the crew stories,maybe do it in the format of like in the live show for under the mistletoe (or maybe it was UTI i dont remember) where they have one crew memeber or audience memebr on stage interacting with the cast in characters (like in UTI they had lisa's exes) or just have the crew member tell a story from their life and show them in the audience. that would be better imo.

hot goss - now for every episode where they don't do an improvised game or recurring segment, they do hot goss, which i think you can tell is trying to act as like the 'weekend update' of this show btu more leaning into pop culture elements, which, im sorry, i love you tommy, but this segment is very hit or miss. i don't hate tommy as a host, i think he has a lot of personaltiy which makes him likable and entertaing to watch at times, but this segment is just, very glass half full for me. i liked the stephen king's son episode i think that was well done, but i think my real advice for this segment is the same for the rest of bit city which truly is lean more into the character element of smosh, do stuff like 'deep dive into krungle's dating life' or 'GERALD CAKES TELLS ALL' stuff like that. or if you really want a segment to be about pop culture, then i think a better way to do that would be to maybe bring back the teleprompter bits that they used to do in smosh pit weekly back in like 2016 or so, OR, just get better writers (also cut it down - we do not need like 10 mins+ of amanda being chappell roan and sabrina carpenter's agent - which btw is SUCH a good idea for a character, but as all bit city bits, it fell flat).

--> ,however, i think a better way to do this type of 'weekend update' type show is bring back a smosh pit weekly esque segment - smosh weekly or bit city weekly - and THAT'S where you bring in the topical element of bit city, it's a much better way to do it imo. and you can still keep hot goss if you want to for as i previously siad the character gossip deep dives or the pop culture characters, but alos have this weekly show drive the 'topical' parts of bit city.

chanse jumping over a car - really have no commenrs on this one, i like it as a bit, i think it'll get old really quickly, but for what it is, i like it

How Smosh Took Comedy to the Next Level with These 7 Videos

In recent years, Smosh has elevated its game by showcasing some incredible talent on-screen, including improvised characters and brilliant comedic timing. I believe that YouTube and similar media are often forgotten when discussing television and entertainment, despite channels like Smosh bringing out the best in their cast members. Their tabletop gaming sessions and reactions to bizarre Reddit stories have me glued to my screen for hours on end. The production quality and dedication of the entire team are outstanding, delivering an unforgettable experience for both old and new fans. I've watched some of their videos more than five times, and I still can't get enough of their playthrough of the Love is Blind game. I even had a Barbie-style poster of Toilet Girl as my lock screen for some time, just to be reminded of the laughter and joy that video has brought me. Let's get on to my top picks and I'll explain what makes them so iconic as well as what makes them so memorable.

Smosh: The Chaos Comedy We Need Right Now

Almost every second of this video is iconic and brings some of the most memorable quotes with it. From the fear of rejection to drinking toilet tequila, this is a group of comedic chaos I will always watch. I want the relationship between Straight Chanse and Shayne to work! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WOfPcDaTdNk&list=PLYdEgvjg8Aa0-Pt3JXqF_geZtQOyT_lN-&index=2 This is one of the most absurd play throughs of the Moose Master game by Smosh. Attempting to remember story actions, repressing seething rage, and much more makes this a gentleman's fever dream. i can safely say the first day jitters have subsided! additionally, i know this probably isn’t the ideal place, but i just wanted to take this space to express how truly grateful i am for smosh and for this opportunity. as many of you know, i desperately needed to get out of new york, and lost in a new city. these past few months have been a rollercoaster, but i feel as if i’ve finally arrived at the end. ian and anthony, thank you so so much for taking me on and allowing me to join your wonderful troup of extremely talented individuals, both on and off screen. whatever my future holds, i know working here will change me irrevocably—i’m so stoked.

smosh - the current situation

as i was pulling together my notes for my next bit city analysis (part 2 coming soon btw guys), i came across another topic which i think deserves it's own post instead of being combined with the bit city post, this post is about, the current situation with smosh.

so, as i said previously, smosh is not exaclty in the best place right now, 2024 overall has been an odd year for youtube, but especially smosh. while on one hand there were some great parts, smosh the sitcom, more games content, new cast member, and the introduction of bit city (as flawed as it is) being the main ones, there have also been some down sides. as smosh decided to take a break in early summer of this year all the way until august, their viewership has naturally gone down, especially on the main channel.

now this itself isn't as much an issue, naturally when you sya that you're not gonna post for 2 months, you will lose some views and maybe even some subsribers, it's not a large issue. the issue that i think smosh has run into, is that they're not able to get their views back. see, last year, if you look at the views across the main, pit and games channels, they were all at a relatively good place, main channel had had the benefit of food battle gaining 2.7 million views and going no.1 on trending and prepping for anthony's funeral, every video towards the end of 2023 has somewhere around 800k - 1m views on average. pit channel was booming with views around this time, in fact i think that for a while, from october to late november, nealry every smosh pit video had 1 million to 2 million views (everything from eat it or yeet it, who memed it, reddit stories, etc.) and for games, it's a bit more difficult (for me) to sense the average but it was somewhere around the 600k/800k to 1 million/2 million range, so overall pretty good.

however, nowadays, the views have definitely fallen, for pit and games i can't tell exactly how much (i am theatre kid, not made for math) but from what i can tell, most of the videos with 1 million or + views (on pit) are reddit stories, everything else generally stays within 800k/900k view count. and for the main channel.... it's not looking so good.

now, to be fair, even this time last year, in november of 2023, the smosh main channel was not doing perfect, and a lot of the flashbacks + sketches that weren't nostalgia based got less than a million views, as ian and anthony have said, sketch comedy has and will always be difficult to make on a platform like youtube, not many average viewers are willing to watch it (unless you're a big brand like snl), and unless you have somehting really brand/nostalgia based like food battle or pokemon battle, etc. it's gonna be hard for you to get views, but, at least back then, their sketches were still getting decent views, and there were a good couple that had from around 900k to 1 million views. nowawadays, with the introduction of and smosh putting all of their attention on bit city, most of the views are from 600k to 900k views (which is pretty decent tbf, that's how the channel was doing back in 2023 as well with the exception of food battle), and only ONE bit city sketch has over a million views, that sketch being 2024 sucks, bit city 2.

anthony's channel hasn't been doing that well either, many fans have been complaining on pressalike's consistent decision to basically turn his channel into like an interview/assumption channel for la influencers, and from shifting the original focus of his channel, which was to give a voice to those who don't have one in society (minorities, marginalised communities,). it also seems that at smosh, they have really been trying to merge the two channels (smosh + pressalike) together into 1 company, and so a lot of crew from one company have changed the other, and so this has also lead to a lot of changes behind the scenes (which i think reflects a bit in the content).

to add on to this view situation, a lot of fans have also noticed that anthony has started appearing less and less in content, besides the content on his main channel and on lunchtime with smosh, he is barely on smosh anymore. ian at least makes appearances in stuff like bit city and occasionally pit and games content, but anthony has basically like checked out, he's mostly bts nowadays, besiddes 2024 sucks, he's always in the background of bit city sketches or in the audience, and the beopardy he was in recently, was one of his first pit appearances in MONTHS. now this by itself wouldn't be as big an issue if they had just addressed it, but unfortunately, they have not, smosh has not addressed any of the fan speculations or concerns about anthony at all, not a community post, or a pinned comment, or even an instagram story or reddit post or any type of damage control, nothing. what this does is that it leaves a lot of the fans (especially ianthony shippers and supporters who supported and loved anthony all throughout his return to smosh in 2023) feeling very blindsided and confused about the whole ordeal.

and to add a cherry on top, a lot of the smosh cast have been getting into drama lately, with noah being allegedely a zionist/liking pro-israel tweets? (i think), keith making some really insensitive jokes about the whole diddy case, and chanse going out with a trump supporter (he said it's not official or anything but still...), it's not been the best for the channel pr wise either (and as far i know - none of the cast members listed above has issued apologies or retracted their statements).

so overall, smosh is in kinda a messy place right now, and i think that's for multiple reasons, it definitley seems like there is a shift in the leadership team for smosh and there have been many crew departures in the past year (from heidi to zoe, to most recently, josh), and overall, things have changed, a lot. honestly the smosh right now looks slightly unrecognizable from the smosh 1 year ago to me, and that's coming from someone who became a stan of the channel around 2023.

now, that's not to say that things are horrible or that they can't get better, i think they cna, it will just take a lot of reworking. i think the 2 biggest changes they can make so far is 1. change up bit city and find a way to make it reach more people and get more views, while also staying true to the smosh core audience, 2. to make anthony's channel's focus back on giving marignalised communities a voice for themselves, and 3. to maybe make some sort of statement or acknowledgement on anthony's departure/absence from the channel of late. i think smosh can find it's stride again, this year hasn't been horrible that way by any means, it's just been messy and complicated. but as always, i will be hoping for the best for smosh and i am genuinely excited to see what comes next.
