"Family" - Opus Daily Practice 19

Happy Family Day from our @battle-of-alberta family to yours :)

Family Day is an Alberta invention, proclaimed by then Lieutenant Governor Helen Hunley on suggestion from then Premier Don Getty to promote family values and spending time with each other. It has since spread to many other provinces, but is not a federal holiday. And yes, it's the same day as President's Day on purpose!

I decided to try @acetechne's Draw This In Your Style challenge and drew Calvin McCall (Calgary) and Edward Murphy (Edmonton) with their civic flowers! 🌷🌻

finished chapter one and reading the bit about ralph klein gives me the heebie jeebies because its The Same Now but Worse because everyone is trying to be the watered down version of him and doing literally the exact same crap he did and i am living through it Again and it’s a lot :/

Red Deer the deer no one played with (because she was lame)

Present for Mororo. Warning: This is written satirically. :I With some basis in fact. If you are easily offended then GET OUT.

Onceler upon a time there was a small town* who pretended to be a city named Red Deer. She wanted tomodachi's to play with, but for some reason she was always excluded.

She was verrry sad.

So one day she held a party. She bribed erryone to come with promises of moose steak.* She had decided to capitalize upon the fact that everyone only seemed to visit her when they were going some place else and wanted her cooking.

Over a deliciously bbqed moose steak Red Deer decided to broach the subject that was very sore in her heart.

"Why won't you guys play wif me?" she asked super sadly with a big frownie face.*

"Because you're a boring father fuck yo!" Kinuso piped up in a pseudo gangsta style. "Your moose steaks are crap by the way. Mine are better because I KILL THEM WITH MY BARE HANDSSSS YO."

Red Deer frowned. Kinuso was always a bit of a douche and thus to be disregarded. Something about the smaller the town the bigger the asshole.

"But I want to play wif erryone else." Red Deer said. She was still super sad.* "FINE IGNORE MY EXISTENCE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!" Kinuso angrily shouted, their brilliant offensive orange I'M A HAMLET #YOLO crinkling in their action. "I hope you go die in a tar pit! And you stink! I can smell you from where I live! Later LOOZEERRR!"

Super offended Kinuso set Red Deer's car on fire* before driving their huge truck back home (and stealing the rest of the moose steak).

Red Deer once again ignored Kinuso but she was sad the steak was gone.

She turned her attention to Edmonton.

"Edmonton senpai why won't you notice me?" She asked.

Edmonton stared at her mildly befuddled, "To be honest the only thing you are good for is doughnuts*. There really isn't anything here. Thanks for the food I G2G." With that Edmonton took all of her doughnuts and fled.

Attempting to get some better attention she turned to Calgary. "Surely you are a lot cooler than Edmonton and will be my friend right?"

Calgary stared at her, "I am cooler than Edmonton obvs, but uh I just came to grab my A&W Rootbeer milkshake*. Laters." Calgary fled.

Following their lead everyone else ditched.

Sadly Red Deer wandered down around her city super sad. She was so sad it was nobodies business. She sat by a river. "I WANT SOME FRIENDS GOSH GANGIT!" she shouted into the ether.

"I will  be your friend!" A voice perked up.

She looked and a super kawaii beaver smiled at her from the river.

They had so much fun. Especially when she sicked the beaver upon peoples dogs and it attacked them and stuff.

One day after a hard day of flossing her teeth Red Deer returned to the park only to see a CRIME SCENE.

Someone had shot her friend to death. :C *

Done with life Red Deer sat in her heated garage* and cried. All of the tears she cried. Shiku shiku shiku.

"I am one hundred percent done with life!" she proclaimed.

"Why?" asked Drumheller.

"Yeah whats up with that?" piped in Drumheller Park.

"Eek!! Kysaaaaa perverts!" responded Red Deer striking an animu pose of your choice.

"Why you so sad allatime?" asked Drumheller.

Red Deer couldn't speak for a full ten minutes. Drumheller senpai and Drumheller Park senpai were noticing her!* "Because I have no friends."

"We don't either." Drumheller Park shrugged, "When Drummy and I got married no one bothered to show up."

"You got married?" Red Deer asked.

"Yup. It's ok no one knows we are anything of import anyway." Drumheller replied. "All they want is our bones."

"That is sad."

They sat there awkwardly.

"Why are you here?" Red Deer asked.

"We want to be your friends." Parkie answered, "You have bones. We have bones."

Red Deer smiled. Parkie smiled. Odin smiled. Drummy smiled.

"Ok deal."

AND THEY WERE SUPER BEST FRIENDS THE END.

(Edmonton) No I'm pretty sure it is Red Deer. I'm sure it only became a city because people just got lost and gave up on life. P: Much like the rest of Canada

8) Also based off of a true story. Pretty much the only point of Red Deer was the killer beavers until they got shot. :CCC

9) The only memory I have of Red Deer other than food is a family reunion where these relatives of mine showed off their fancy heated garage. Needless to say I was VERY impressed!

10) Obviously these ten minutes of silence were awkward for everyone, and the two senpai's did consider leaving.

This is what happens when you give me access to your OCs. Ed strikes me as the type to say something outlandish or petty in an argument just to shut it down. And he’s not above making homophobic jokes at his expense to do that

Does the way you feel (physically/emotionally/politically) affect your city and by extension the whole province and vice versa?

ah just calvin i'm afraid and i mostly meant it as a tongue in cheek political joke because all the billionaires at his place like to push him around and offer him presents in exchange for his support on issues he doesn't understand.

people also figured out in 2015 that if calvin leans even a little bit away from his conservative upbringing that he can affect the balance of power which is why all the feds come to stampede every year and provincial elections are all about calgary and oooh does calgary need a new ring road does calgary need a new green line would calgary like a new art gallery or an arena etc etc :/ but i am obviously very biased

Is Ralph like everyone’s dad? Or big brother? How does that work ?

I was really overthinking how much detail to answer this question with and then I realized the most important piece of information is that Ralph is younger than several of the major munis - he wasn’t even a twinkle for almost 100 years of Ed’s life. Mac wasn’t even part of the territory that the original district of Alberta covered, and it wasn’t decided whether the province would extend east to west or north to south until 1905. (Jas actually slept through the whole district to province thing between the 1880s and the 1900s) The formation of the district of Alberta and the race for capital of the fledgling province is something that would take a few more asks to answer...... :3c soo...

I think there’s this common misconception that because provinces outrank municipalities in political power that they are older than them, but history doesn’t usually work out that way. I think (like Ed, actually) Ralph is annoyed that everyone bosses him around (since that’s how democracy typically works) and he can be quite contrary and stubborn about it when he wants to be... but he’s just as quick to say “Well, it’s what everyone wants, so there!”

Lucas Wilson, Etienne Maisonneuve & Vernon Mann

Calvin McCall & Edward Murphy

A major new change has come to the weekly exhibition: from now on, doodles and drawings created in Autodesk SketchBook will be included! SketchBook combines the best of Photoshop with Microsoft Paint to quickly and easily create with artists’ favourite tools, including pencils, drawing pens, paintbrushes and Copic markers.

While any colours can be used in SketchBook, I prefer colouring with the Copic palette, as it brings my digital art closer to how it would be if it had been coloured traditionally – with a black inking pen and markers (not necessarily Copic).

To try out these exciting features, I drew some more doodles of some of the city fan characters from the IAmMatthewian Project (Project Canada).

Lucas Wilson, Etienne Maisonneuve & Vernon Mann

First up is a redrawing of this doodle, starring Toronto (Lucas Wilson), Montreal (Etienne Maisonneuve) and Vancouver (Vernon Mann). With bold black outlines and more muted colours, this version is much cleaner and less louder than the other. In an attempt to diversify my artworks, each of the characters are given differing skin tones, which due to the wide Copic range of colours is easier than ever. The characters’ names are written in a custom downloaded font to add a more personal and professional touch. As before, their outfits are based on the hometowns’ flags, which can be seen in the aforementioned post.

Calvin McCall & Edward Murphy

Fan favourites Calgary (Calvin McCall) and Edmonton (Edward Murphy) – both created by Hapo on Tumblr – also get doodled. The patches on Calgary’s Stetson hat were created using the rough pastel tool in black, while his spurs are sprayed with grey glow paint to give a silvery sheen. Diverse skin tones are also played with in Edmonton’s brown flesh, where previously I had coloured him with white skin. By colouring him brown, this is more faithful to Hapo’s portrayal of Edmonton.

A Very McMurray Christmas Arc 5

Well uh sorry to leave you with such a depressing arc on Christmas Day p:

People ask me occasionally who Bertie likes better, Ed or Cal, and the answer is neither of them but /technically/ he and Cal grew up together so he has a bit of a soft spot for the cowtown kids, i imagine. But when it comes to spending time with people, Mac is the easiest to talk to because Mac -gets it-. The other two in his mind are too (lowercase) liberal lately and he and Ed have (almost) never seen eye to eye on anything lol.

I’ve always gathered that Bert is extremely sensitive about money. Part of it came out of fears of the NWR in 1885 and watching big bros Sask and Mani suffer in the RRR, a large part of it came out of the Depression, and the most recent part of it came from the NEP in the 1980s. He’s always been extremely protective of his assets and always takes it personally when people go for his wallet, always. He’s also very bad at expressing concern even though he’s a very heartfelt and loyal person, he’s still trying to keep up his Macho Man image. It’s up to you to interpret how much in denial he’s in in that last panel. 

When I say Caro is old money I mean she grew up on Cochrane ranch land on big acres and played croquet and polo during the ‘golden age of ranching’ in the 1880s, and Bert did some time working for her and her brother herding their cattle. Mac of course is new money(mid-late 20th c) working in the tar sands, it’s tough but he usually only has to work half a year (but he still cries about EI and whatever even though he has more than enough to support himself). He’s also naturally very defensive about what he does and for a moment forgot who he was talking to because he’s been preparing for that conversation for too long. 

In case you’re curious about their ages:  Ed: 1795 (222) Mac: 1870 (147) Cal: 1874 (143) Red: 1882 (135) Caro: 1896 (121) Bert: Unknown, but I tend to think of him making contact with others in the early 1880s or late 1870s. He was a district by 1882 but he had been hanging around with some questionable people (Montana, Colorado, Texas, etc) who were showing him the ropes when he found work at Cal and Caro’s place.
