no for real the onceler fandom when i was a huge part of it (2015/2016) was so fuckin toxic half the people left bc everyone was praising one or two blogs and acting like everyone else was dirt. it was super discouraging and i ran about 3 blogs and the only interactions i ever got was from people starting drama :(
im not sure what the askblog scene looks like today but im HOPING and PRAYING its better
eughh im sorry that sounds like absolute hell...i barely dipped my toes in because i was recovering from Stuff (stuff that took me to this year to get over enough to even make another personal blog) so i wasnt Too up-to-date with what was going on in the fandom from 2015 tooo 2019?ish? even if i popped in on entre's blog time to time, but i've heard stuff from others and friends
i think the askblog scene is A LOT more chill these days. a lot more lax and there's sooo much just...Less of everything that it makes things easier to like take in stride at least to me compared to 2012-2014 days where everything was so intense, extreme, and constant
there's still the like ghosts of the same issues that've been present since day one but its like...on a MUCH lesser scale. i honestly think it's pretty good all things considered :) the only thing that makes it rly hard for me compared to past eras is how split the fandom is uhhh app/site-wise (like its very much spread across tiktok, tumblr, twitter, discord, maybe more...idk) and so it feels like im missing out if i dont keep up everywhere LMAO and each location comes with its own issues either population-wise or site/app-wise
i miss how centralized it used to be to tumblr u_u and obviously having more content to look at back in the day, i got very spoiled on it so when i peruse the fandom content its like a lot less to look at but thats honestly GOOD FOR ME BC I HAVE NO TIME NOW LMAOOOO but its just like strange bc im like woah i dont have to scroll for an hour on entres dash anymore to catch up
well i do, but that's bc i have no time to check it on work days and so it piles up for when i do sit and take the time. cant imagine the hell i'd be in if it was 2012-era activity
ppl who had full-time jobs in the fandom in 2012 damn...i salute you.
unfortunately with a fandom as niche as this, it kinda cooks up the same issues over and over again and it makes me wish there was some sort of disclaimer that popped up as soon as you wanted to join the fandom to give you a rundown on how the culture is, who the people are, what the past drama was (so dont bring it up again), and all that LMFAO like a onceler fandom 101 that was just beamed into your device when you were like hmm what if i joined the onceler fandom LMAO
i kinda wanna do something like that specifically for askblogs? like a dos and donts. or "things i wish i knew when i started an askblog" type of thing but alas..no time. bc i see other mods go through the same obstacles/difficulties i went through and learned to either change my thinking on, or something else to either help me get past it/over it or at least cope better and id wanna pass that on if the fandoms gonna keep getting revived every two or so years and then cave in on itself from the same rehashed drama/problems it always has :sob emoji:

Jesus help me.
I'm not into kiddie shit. I don't like kids media. I never cared for the cartoons I used to watch when I was younger. I'm not "kidcore" or "plushcore" or "liminal-space-of-a-playground-core" or whatever-core.
I am a proud, dubiously respectable 20-going-on-21 year old adult.
But... A few weeks ago I stepped onto Twitter one day and saw a resurgence of the greatest thing that ever happened to 4-year-old me.
And now I've been silently obsessing over this stupid piss-colored rat and his stupid technicolor ensemble ever since. And I decided to half-sorta-kinda make some designs for a possible AU/parody "reboot", because my body functions on embarrassment and embarrassment alone.
We're going full cringe, gamers. This is my domain.
Join me, friends, on my pilgrimage to 0 followers because I keep posting stupid shit instead of things of substance.
I am going on a downward spiral to Hell and I'm dragging all of you down with me. (this is a very long post with extra autistic rambling, courtesy of yours truly)
You guys remember the show "Wow! Wow! Wubbzy!"?
Well. I do. And if you (reader) do too, we're already kissing (no allo).
For those of you who aren't in the loop with Twitter's community bullshit, basically for Year of the Rabbit, some furry artists managed to dig up... Widget, as their primary source material, because she's a rabbit. And I'm half parts giddy and half parts pissed for multiple reasons.
For starters (somewhat unrelated), the HBO Max rendition of Scooby Doo, "Velma" came out sometime in 2023 (I can't exactly remember the date). It was essentially a SUPARR GRITTY EDGY ADULT REBOOT
In short, it horribly butchered the source material and in its attempt to be a SUPARR GRITTY EDGY ADULT REBOOT, basically became an insulting mockery of the show it was based off of or "reviving".
And I thought to myself... What if I did that? What if I ruined my own childhood by taking this crown jewel of 2006 and also turning it into a SUPARR GRITTY EDGY ADULT REBOOT?
In the parodical sense, of course.
Basically a reimagining of Wubbzy and friends in a late 2010s setting, possibly 2016, when the characters are a little older and having to slog through the parts of life that aren't particularly suitable for a preschooler's cartoon.
I wanted to keep the art style somewhat true to the source material, but my cartooning skills are extremely rusty and I don't know how to give things the "Generic Adult Cartoon" look, so the art style ended up looking like the horrible out-of-wedlock spawn of Winnie the Pooh and Adventure Time.
Hopefully I didn't unintentionally ruin their designs because I had to give most of them stupid emo 2012 furry hair swoops. Their "redesigns" just looked incomplete without them.
Going through the main-ish characters (incomplete) and how I've bastardized them to fit the SUPARR GRITTY EDGY ADULT REBOOT theme (very much not to sizing scale):
I've changed around some of the species choices for the characters to make them a little more "interesting" in my opinion. This will play into some of their behaviors, because I fucking love talking animal characters acting like the animals they were based off of.
Very one dimensional descriptions because I'm still finding my footing with this, and I just need to get this off my chest.
Wubbzy is a hybrid of a Mongolian gerbil and a sand cat. He's 14 now.
Basically the standard angsty teen struggling to maintain his chipper attitude in an environment that's more unnecessarily meanspirited and meaningless because he's stuck in a gritty "deep" adult cartoon and "life just suuucks, maaan".
Daizy is a Maltese breed dog (im not hybridizing her because her source design is crowded enough).
A year older than Wubbzy, she is one of those kids who "lives under a rock" per-se. Somehow is able to keep the same cheerful demeanor since she was a kid, but is frequently bullied and mocked for her naivety and her lack of knowledge on memes and other teenage trends.
And now for these three bozos. Once upon a time, they were silly kids that loved playing outdoor games and so on. Now they're juul hitting, offensive meme posting, band playing, devil's lettuce smoking (alleged) delinquents. They're all the same age as Daizy (so 15).
Huggy is a least weasel, and she's just at the beginning of her streetcore phase.
The mastermind behind the meme pages run by the three, and she's the reason why all of them are addicted to monster drinks, anime, "edgy" memes, and every flavor of e-cigarrette there is.
Buggy is a European hare, and is the patron saint of "band kids".
Super obsessed with anime and vidya, is one of the 1st trumpets in his band class and uses that opportunity to play every dead meme imaginable, and has dubiously been featured several times on r/iamverysmart.
Earl is the hybrid of a Syrian hamster and a Bengal tiger.
One of those dudes that's super into sports, cars, men's fashion, and fitness. Was the first to introduce the three to cringe anime gymbro memes. A Certified Good Boi, but is cursed to have the fashion sense of a fuckboy for the rest of his life.
And of course, we can't forget about these old, saggy losers (affectionate)
Firstly, to get this off my chest, it's one of my biggest pet peeves when people choose to... "yassify" characters, but they refuse to do it in a way that actually fits the character. I've seen my fair share of fat Widget and curvy Widget, but why do none of these cowards ever draw her buff? Did they even watch the show? Widget's a fucking carpenter and mechanical engineer for fucks sake. She's shitting out heavy, complicated robotics and automation like every half hour. SHE BUILDS ALL HER FUCKING INVENTIONS BY HAND. She could LITERALLY crush everyone around her like rotten grapes if she wanted to, and yet I NEVER see anyone make her the barrel-chested, steel-pecced, iron-fisted Valkyrie she was meant to be. Anyway...
These two (hypothetically) will have the most adult oriented themes and issues, amplified even moreso because as of "2016" they'd be in their mid 30s. Neither change very much because it's extremely likely that in the source show, they're already post-college adults.
(these two were/are my favorite characters too, so of course i have to put them through the most suffering lol)
Widget, Millennial Scum #2 (1982 baby), is a hybrid of a black-tailed jackrabbit and a greater bilby.
Unluckily had her workshop closed down for unlicensed manufacturing as well as a specific "accident" she'd prefer not to mention. Now struggles to regain where her career was dropped off by working as a designer and manufacturer for some unspecified corporation. Throughout her struggles, she somehow manages to stay hopeful and determined that she'll return to her love of freelance engineering.
Walden, Millennial Scum #1 (1981 baby), is a hybrid of a Malayan sun bear and a thylacoleo (carnifex). Goes through the most suffering because he was/is my absolute favorite ;-)
After a false accusation from some disgruntled out-of-town interns/coworkers, his credentials were compromised and he was put on a watchlist after rumors began to circulate that he owned and operated a meth lab. Was basically barred from having an in-person occupation, or really any occupation that isn't anonymous. On top of that, he believes he's "hit the wall" prematurely, thinking he's too old, too controversial, and too out-of-touch to live an exciting and fulfilling life anymore.
These aren't finalized and I don't even know why I'm speaking like this when I'm regarding basically a crackfic, but uhhhh that was all from me
See you guys later when my brain starts hemorrhaging again teehee bye
#help me jesus#brainlet hour#unoriginal content#plunging straight into fandom hell#wow wow wubbzy#nostalgia#twitter furries#screaming into the abyss#nostaliga#2000s cartoons#nick jr#semi nsft#aw hell naw these bitches crusty#alternate universe#reboot au#parody fic#the truth is im not sorry and i will continue to wubbzypost#fucking loved this show and now i love it again

an ode to livejournal
Man, what happened to the community of LiveJournal? They just sent me a kind of pathos-laden "hey happy 19th anniversary of starting on LJ!" For those who don't know, it was a fairly popular (at pre-Twitter, pre-FB, pre-YouTube levels of "popular") site that let people have their own blogs, and you could see and comment on the posts of your friends aggregated on a "feed" page. I didn't post there, since I had already started my own blog (and had just added a comments board that was the nucleus of its own little community - in fact I had a sidebar microblog for other people to write on the front page...) so my LJ account was for following others and participating in comment threads. It's notable that many of the final-ish entries of my friends (many in 2010, then more in 2016) mention twitter which is where I assume most of that energy left. Actually, to make a Just-So story: 2010 is when folks who were fonder of the community of folks they know in real life jumped off for Facebook, and 2016 is when folks aspiring to get a wider audience and maybe go viral left for Twitter. LiveJournal encouraged thoughtful writing in paragraphs; I guess medium now has most that vibe. Maybe substack, but they seem to lean on individual newsletter-y bits. But neither medium nor substack emphasize the "shared feed"/wall/stream that twitter, tumblr, instagram, FB etc have, where posts from a variety of people you find (or The Algorithm hopes you will find) interesting will be on a single scrollable page. As far as I know LiveJournal was the strongest attempt to encourage longer length writing with entries that were then blended onto feed pages. (Standalone blogs had RSS to collate from sites, but Google embraced and then extinguished the most promising attempts to make that friendly to less technical users. I never got into reading via RSS, frankly, because extracting just the text out of the visual context of its home site made me feel something was lost.) I think that "are you encouraged (by the UI, or the community vibe) write in paragraphs or sentences" - that's a big part of what separated LJ from Twitter (and also old Usenet (which I used to love) from Reddit, which has never really clicked for me.) And it's just that short-form mojo Twitter that has, (or a visual, easily digestible image-based approach that Instagram, Tumblr, and even FB) which lends itself to The Algorithm mixing and matching and letting you find new people based on what people you already follow are also digging. Which when I write it out, does sound rather herdish, or redolent of the maddening crowd. Finding new interesting people on LJ was slower, and more organic, generally by following up co-commentators on mutual friends, because going through someone's LJ entries was a longer-attention-span thing. I've been leaning into tumblr more lately, which (like twitter) I'd mostly been using as an information consumer and not a contributor. Sometimes I wonder if I had started reposting my blog content there years ago like I have been on FB, if I might be have found an even stronger community there (or a set of "mutuals" as they're called). Tumblr has cultural space for both long paragraphs and for quick hit images, and a unique style of additive reblogging that keeps contact with the original post while still getting people to riff.

12. what kind of day is it? it's been busy, a little monday-like, but it's done and it's also pleasantly windy so i have the windows open listening to music and chilling for a bit (i'm also home alone and have no intention of leaving the house today so the games felt like a nice idea)
36. how many times have you changed your url? a few times, i've had this blog since 2010 and as far as i can remember, it's had six urls, the drag race blog i've had since 2016-ish and it's had probably twice as many names bc i have a rpdr url hoarding problem (i've decided to keep the ella url bc i actually like that one a lot but originally it was going to last till uk3 finished)

Ryan Turner
Hey there sports fans, my name is Ryan Turner and I'll be running the show this week. I'm 26 years old and live in Waltham, MA - I was born in New Jersey, but have grown up and lived in Massachusetts since I was 4. I started playing in 2010 when I was at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) where I was studying mathematics - D-III ultimate, represent. I continued playing there for 5 years (captaining in 2013) through 2015 during grad school for financial mathematics. During my time abroad in Australia in 2013, I (sort of) played with the Melbourne club Heads of State for two months before my first official club season that summer stateside. That club season was with a lower/mid-ish level mixed team, Darkwing, where we qualified for regionals for the first time. The following season in 2014, I decided to be a practice player with Boston Garuda as opposed to being rostered for another club team in an attempt to make myself a better player. In 2015, I played on a new open team with a bunch of summer league pals, the Rhode Island Breakers - we had a lot of fun but didn't qualify for regionals until the following year in 2016. After that 2016 season, I wanted to make the leap and play for an elite-level team and qualify for nationals. I put in a hell of a lot of work during that offseason and it paid off when I made Boston Slow White in 2017. I played with Slow again in 2018 and plan to play with my great teammates there for a long time.
Outside of club, I started coaching my alma mater in 2017. WPI had sort of been without a coach since around 2015-2016 and I wanted to see the program succeed so me and one of my best friends took over and put in an effort towards improving the team. At sectionals, we came within one point of qualifying for regionals in a controversial universe point loss after not coming anywhere near qualifying since 2015. I'm still coaching there and hoping my guys can make the leap back to regionals this year.
As far as my personal life goes, I'm getting married in June! My fiancee puts up with all of my ultimate habits and I'm lucky that she has the patience for me. We also have a cat together named Purrcy - he is kind of a menace, but we love him anyways. I'll probably post pictures of him throughout the week. I'll also have been doing a lot of reading lately, I enjoy playing video games in my spare time, and I like sci-fi movies. I'm also a huge Philadelphia Eagles, Boston Bruins, and Celtics fan (and I guess the Red Sox are cool too).
Throughout the week, I'm open to questions about my experiences throughout the different levels of ultimate I've played, as well as coaching (I'm new to that so I'm always open for tips and suggestions as well), and personal goals I have for my ultimate career. I'm usually not too open about my personal life, but maybe I can open up a bit while I'm on here. Looking forward to the week, and what we can all talk about. Thanks!
