The non-novel-spoilery reaction post to episodes 1 & 2 of Love In The Big City which was also from October, but which honestly stands up for my reaction to the whole series. What a gift of a show.

A quick pitch for Akaya is in Love with Hiroko from July. This one hurts! I was so ready to cheerlead for this show and did several times, but the penultimate episode made me wary and the finale really upset me, to the point where I didn't end up writing about the finale, so I'll take the chance here: Don't make a show about two self-aware lesbians, one who has been comfortably sexually active for years and one who is super horny for her, and have them get together as adults and yet be celibate for a year out of "respect". Is the message that sex between consenting and enthusiastic adults is not respectful?! GTFO. For the record I can be respected with orgasms, thank you.

The episode celebrating the messaging in the finale of Let Free the Curse of Taekwondo from November. Glad that this is here between the previous entry and the next two, because this is a good balm for the pain. LFtCoT landed the ending and gave us all a giant hug while doing it!

The list of things I was thinking about at the end of Wandee Goodday ep3 from May. Another disappointment for me. The things this post shouts out are still things I like about this show, and reading it again is a reminder of where the back half let the first half down (not taking seriously some of the things we were told to take seriously in the first few episodes).

An early post about Love Is Better the Second Time Around from March. Another show that did not land everything, in this case because it felt like it tried to shove in a complicated conflict in the last two episodes that they didn't have time to handle. But I still love those early episodes and all of the interplay between Miyata, Iwanaga, and Shiraishi.

My clown theory for Every You, Every Me also from October, which ended up being correct! I've never been more happy to be right, I liked this reveal for the show so much.

In February I wrote this thesis about the state of Thai BL looking at data from 2022 and 2023, which I have been meaning to go back and update since I think Shan as usual was feeling the start of the wave and we needed more data to see the change actually play out in 2024. I now no longer feel (as I did in this post) that things haven't changed, I do think they have this year. But I need to crunch the numbers again to prove it to myself (and everyone else) though. Stay tuned!

In July I did a round-up post about the various theories surrounding Century of Love, and whether Vee and Vad were the same person. Turns out San did wrestle with this as I'd hoped but the show itself felt like it lost steam and copped out around this, unfortunately. At least we'll always have fox demon Offroad and grumpy old man Daou's collarbones thanks to this show.

Look, I personally lose nothing if Lokius doesn’t become explicit canon. And if that were to become the case, I’d also have no regrets for saying for years that that would happen in the show by the end ¯_(ツ)_/¯

I’ve said it before, but by now it would be Disney/Marvel’s loss, NOT mine. Whoever wasted or limited the potential would be the idiot, not me.

I’m simply never gonna feel crazy for noticing what’s happening in a story or silly for daring to hope it’ll be brought to fully satisfying narrative completion. That's just a me thing. Maybe this is because at heart I’m stubborn! But I’d like to think I’m not unreasonable. I can’t control whether writing stays consistent or censorship is overcome... But I just do my best to construct solid arguments, and as long as those arguments remain solid, I stand by them :)

I know not everyone would say the same, or they consider this to be "hope" or "optimism," but I see it as logic based in noticing what the text of a show/story is doing. And personally I also consider blatantly evident subtext to be "canon enough," so if we get my personal minimum, my happiness may still outweigh any potential disappointment for me.

However. Here's what I've come here to say today, in reaction to things I've seen floating around in the fandom:

While I do understand on some level why people worry that Lokius won’t be more explicitly canonically romantic because it could be censored by Disney.... At this point, I don’t understand how people can think Loki/Sylvie will still happen.

As of right now, there’s no way to argue for that in my opinion. (I'd like to see someone try.)

The show has set up a fun but very simple situation from basically the start:

They made romantic love a point of relevance in the show’s story. More specifically, they pointed out Loki's desire for a "real" romantic love, and had him learn the lesson that he doesn't deserve to be alone. They didn't HAVE to do all of those things and tie them together. They CHOSE to make romantic love relevant – and they have actively continued to choose to do that, to the point of including a mirrored dark love triangle in s2 ep3. That narrative thread simply has to be fulfilled.

So if they deliberately established that Loki wants and needs a “real” love, and his relationship with Sylvie was referred to as "fiction" so she cannot be a real love for him.... Who does it have to be?

Obviously it has to be Mobius. And of course, the whole show points to Lokius also, for countless more reasons than just this simple breakdown. But pointing this element out is the simplest argument one can make.

So either...

1. They take Lokius to full narrative completion with explicit canon, as they should and as I expect them to,

or

2. Loki's desire for a real love is left unfulfilled, open-ended, and/or made clear through subtext that it's Mobius.

Those are the options, if you ask me!

This is aside from how Lokius’ love story is now even at the core of the show’s themes and plot, which is an insanely strong vote in favor for their future canonicity.

But for the purposes of this post, I’m talking about whether we'll get explicit romance specifically, like a love confession or a kiss – and I do actually genuinely think we'll get both of those things. I'm not trying to force you to agree with me, but just to be clear, that's where I'm at with it and have been since 2021 lol.

So in regards to worrying about Loki/Sylvie...

They were never really a romance (yes, even in season 1) and they sure as hell aren't now. I can’t imagine they'll become one even IF Lokius is left subtextual.

So what actually remains to be seen is if the writers got to go all the way with Lokius, or if that central queer love story was censored on some level in the end.

My hot take is no one should be ~worrying~ about Sylki at this stage of the game. Free yourselves, people.

If the story starts abruptly going in a Sylki direction, even with only 3 episodes left, I will certainly be the first to say so lol. But I simply sincerely, truly doubt that'll happen.

(Hot take in the footer: this is not the post to get into this at length, but in case this comes up… In this house we do not use the word "queerbaiting." It is a useless, nearly-meaningless, insufferable term that devalues the legitimacy of subtext and queercoding more often than not; it's rooted in the idea that media must hit arbitrary and inconsistent checklists often set with cishet approval in mind; and it perpetuates a focus on the false and harmful myth that many creators are "cowards" instead of leaving room for nuance and the fact that industry censorship still exists.)

interesting that this beatrice is using the baby beato voice. I've been trying to get the logic of it, and the best I can figure is that its just... to differentiate? differentiate WHAT exactly, whether its between human beatrices or just the humans and the witch im not sure yet. but I miss her other voice :( the flashback we got of her earlier that I didn't mention also used this voice even though im fairly certain the original version didn't.

Sooooo, I've found myself in a bit of a slump. I figured it'd be a good time to make a follow-up post to my original about my deep dive into Thai BL (pinned post).

Huge "THANK YOU!!!!" to those of you that offered up suggestions for what to watch.

My previous watched list had me at Lovely Writer, which I absolutely loved. I did take a short break after, but followed it up with Until We Meet Again. Holy shit! I kinda wish I could have experienced watching that one live... it was so fucking good!! (And I can't wait for Between Us!!!) This may get long, but here's a list of what else I've watched, in order:

Tharntype & Tharntype2 (and whatever special episodes there were... I know this one is really controversial, but I couldn't help but fall in love them. And I'm glad I watched this before Love By Chance.)

Love By Chance & A Chance to Love (So I really liked this; I really fell in love with Perth's acting. Pete and Ae are so sweet! I love Can!!! Little baby! But TinCan took some time to warm up to, and I almost didn't watch the next series, but in the end, I'm glad I did... even if it was a bit wonky timeline wise. And Ae, the poor dear, was such a sad boy the entire time.)

Lovesick/2 (this was a pain in the ass to find a watchable version. The first season was great, but the second season was waaay too looooong; I almost gave up. Let me tell you, the only reason I even went looking for this show was because I saw the cast for ReminderS, and I'm an idiot who can't watch things out of order.... But I am glad I watched it. It seems to have been one of the flagship BLs for Thailand, and I felt it handled the stories so well.)

ReminderS (Yeah. I saw that the cast was the main four from LBC, and I really wanted to see them together in something else. I thought it was good for a three episode coda type thing for Lovesick.)

Don't Say No (I haven't finished this yet... I got about halfway through. I'll go back to it eventually because I was enjoying it. I just got distracted...)

He's Coming to Me (LOOOOOOOOVED IT! It was such a sweet show! And it was so well acted!)

Golden Blood (I debated not even mentioning it because I couldn't even get through the first episode... I wasn't really feeling it at the time, so I moved on. I am planning on trying again since I hate DNFing without even finishing the first episode of something.)

I then rewatched 2gether cuz my friend was watching it for the first time.

En Love Tossara & Love Mechanics (I watched these because they were short and had relatively good reviews. They were good. That's it haha)

My Gear & Your Gown (I don't have much to say. It was good.)

Why R U? (I've only just started this recently and am not very far into it. It seems crazy lol)

That's where I am with finished shows. I have four that I'm currently watching live: Enchanté, Something in my Room, Not Me, and Cutie Pie. Enchanté and Cutie Pie I watched from day one, Something in my Room I started when ep3 dropped, and I waited for ep6 to start Not Me. I'm not too invested in Something in my Room, but the others I can't help thinking about between episodes hahahah I'm gonna be a mess next week with the final episode of Not Me.

This got longer than I intended; lots of kudos if you made it this far!

Like I mentioned, I'm in a very unmotivated slump right now when it comes to watching a completed show... I hope it doesn't last long.

The Devil Judge: Episode 10

I just finished The Devil Judge and something about this show compelled me to take copious notes - it had emotional intensity and layers of mystery. These are long and rambling, so they're likely not of interest to anyone else, but since I spent all that time writing it I decided, why not post it. Perhaps someone will find it interesting.

Below are my moment-to-moment reactions, predictions and analysis as I watched episode 10.

This is cleaned up only slightly. I followed the spelling given in the Viki subtitles. I mostly don't explain what I'm reacting to, so this will probably only make sense if you've seen the episode recently. Occasionally I give timestamps.

Have I mentioned how much I love Seon-Ah’'s theme music?  red dress, red necklace (drops of blood around the neck that Y choked)

I feel like it's not just Cha and Seon-ah's clothes? there is more and more red being sprinkled in everywhere?  that bamboo spear guy's shirt, these chairs in the president's office. or maybe i just didn't notice it before

Ga-On planned this whole tactic,  I wonder what it's going to be?  I assume he's the one who decided to isolate the bamboo spear guy from his followers, from anyone he can whip up. and calling him by the name he hates. seems like a good strategy with a wannabe demagogue 

I mean, the thing about this sort of fascist in real life, is they're never talking to the court, they're talking to their followers, they’re painting themselves as persecuted as part of a conspiracy.  and this dude is in fact being persecuted as part of a conspiracy. I think in real life this would be the worst mistake - give him a national platform.  because to everyone else he sounds ridiculous and evil, but to his followers and those that could be radicalized, they're going to be whipped up.

oh well actually... both Ga-On and the show may be cleverer than i expected... Yes! fucking defang the fasicist!

I don't know if this solves the facist nationalist problem though.  but kang doesn't really care about that, he just wants his enemies taken down.  

1:02:00 and yet again, Ga-On asks the question on my mind.  I'm starting to trust this show on the political issues?  At least a little?  maybe i've been stockholmed*  Or maybe now that they're not trying to keep judge kang so mysterious, they're freer to be more coherent about the politics.  

Kang: "A monster is not created.  A monster that was already there opens its eyes on its own volition."

Also, Yo-Han is always seductively stretching across furniture when he's near Ga-Onn.  Ga-On is usually contained, standing or sitting.

She's actually a good actress, I think.  I mean, I'm not surprised, but it was hard to tell for sure since she almost always has on her mask.  she didn't even really have to take time to adjust her performance of self when Cha arrived.  

but her face when Cha threatens her with her past (1:04:56) and her real fear and anger she lets show after cha leaves

cha getting a hit in by humiliating her by referencing her past as a maid? that would have parallels to bamboo guy.  but perhaps she's just scared that cha has dug so deeply, or that kang has revealed.

oh fuck.  no, she's so angry because she feels humiliated.  her past as a not powerful person is deeply humiliating and shameful to her

Is she actually going to try to kill Yo-Han?  we have 6 episodes left, we're at the 63% mark

I am your fan 1 month I follow you and it was a light in the dark I was very frustrated with s5 and at the same time happy, I think a little because I did not recognize Bellamy in some moments and I had some moments of the Bellamy that I fell in love with, and by the fandom being toxic, I think when JR created the CL he had no idea of ​​the repercussions he would have. I've seen some assumptions that perfectly match what's on the screen, I was wondering if there's any chance of JR keeping B / E

for over half a season or even the entire season. I know the show is not selling b / e, but it still causes me discomfort when I watch 5 years since I watch the series, 5 years I wait for Bellarke and watch b / it is distressing but I still stand firm as Bellarke and I see the love story being shaped by iron and fire. But once thanks for being patient and thoughtful to Bellarke fans, thank you for the comforting and enlightening posts. Sorry for any mistake English is not my native language.

I’m glad I could help you in fandom. Don’t worry about your english, I can understand you. It was really hard in season 5. (actually it’s been really hard every season in one way or another. i guess fandom is just hard.)

From what I can see so far, the romantic story arc they are telling right now in early season 6 is C/B/E. Not b/e and not c/b. But rather how c/b is stopped because of the commitment between b/e and b/e is stopped because of the love between c/b. It’s a tangle that needs to be solved because neither ships can move forward until it is.

They have been telling it for a season and a half now. They only show us enough of B/E to make sure we understand that it’s real, but all the emotional focus goes to c/b. So can I promise they won’t keep b/e going for a half season?

I can’t promise anything, it’s not my show. But also, the way I look at it, they never HAVE done b/e. B/E would need there to be no Clarke in the middle, and from the moment we saw B/E after watching Clarke alone and pining over Bellamy and wanting him to come home, B/E has NEVER had any screen time without our knowledge of Bellarke as real and profound. 

I have never been worried about b/e because to me, it never was. It was always c/b/e. And knowing what love triangles do, this one will sort itself out into Bellarke, because they are the main ship of the show, soulmates, and she’s been calling him for 2199 days. 

So, of course this is my own interpretation of the story being told, but what I saw, of the romantic story arc, is Clarke longing for Bellamy, and being in love with him for 6 years, which was pretty explicit, I thought, and underscored with the 2199 calls, while Bellamy has been traumatized by her loss and ALSO focused on her for 2199 days. This has NOT been made explicit as love, but there have been implications that he is doing the same kind of (pathetic) longing for the fantasy of her, but he’s moved on to Echo, which is a relationship that is comforting and sweet but not as secure as one would want to see, which Echo is concerned about and Bellamy ignores. Clarke and Bellamy reunite, and their connection is immediate, but Clarke holds back and so does Bellamy and when Clarke discovers B/E she withdraws immediately and actually tries to run away. B/E becomes a part of Bellamy’s trauma as Octavia wants to banish her and then for the rest of the ep Bellamy is desperate to save her. In the end she leaves to be a good spy and he is left with Clarke, who needs his help and they begin their non-romantic partnership again, Which is the “safe” place for them to be. But they grow closer, and then choices have to be made which include deepest betrayal for both of them. Bellamy makes the choice to risk the prior love of his life, Octavia, for Clarke’s life, his relationship with Clarke for the life of all of them. Because it’s been made explicit that Clarke is who he loves, along with Echo. That is an explicit love triangle. There is no ambiguity there and the people trying to make it platonic are denying canon. Clarke leaves him to die, so, pathetic again, he decides to choose Echo and fight for his people. But Clarke, in conversation with Echo, Madi and FlameLxa recognizes that Bellamy is alive, faces her love for him, and faces the WRONGNESS of betraying the person she loves, so she reverses her decision frees Echo to save and be with Bellamy and risks Madi to do so. Notice that at the end of this, both Bellamy and Clarke have chosen B/E while Echo does not even KNOW there’s a choice to be made. But Praimfaya, instead of being about B/E which both Clarke and Bellamy have chosen, is ENTIRELY about Bellarke, and their relationship snaps back into place, as soulmates, partners and friends, aligned and on the same path towards a commitment to being the good guys.

Which brings us to season 6. In which we have reinforced that B/E are still together, but also reinforced that Clarke and Bellamy are a team, supportive of each other, and unable to keep from giving each other heart eyes. So C/B/E is reinforced. Still happening. No resolution. Both are in play, committed b/e and in love c/b. AWKWARD.

In 6.02 we bring the problem of C/B/E to the fore. First, Bellamy brings up the 2199 calls. This is to tell us that the now three season story line is important and is NOT going away. And Bellamy is ready to deal with it. Clarke is not however and runs away. The eclipse psychosis happens, b/e are separated for Echo to go do her duty… again, and Bellamy and Clarke trade keys to their hearts… I mean cuffs. Meanwhile, Echo is dealing with her solo nightmare and it’s about who she is and how she is just a good servant/spy and puts Bellamy explicitly into the role of her master, like Nia and Roan before him. This is a problem for her, but she hasn’t dealt with it yet.  Bellamy goes crazy (while trying to get in to kill echo) and says he doesn’t need Clarke anymore, despite having NEVER telling her or anyone else that he needed Clarke. (you’re over me? when were you under me?) Then he goes homicidal and attempts to kill both Murphy and Clarke, who finally remember they’re family and save each other AND Bellamy from having the horror of murdering the people he loves. HOWEVER, Bellamy wakes up and KNOWS what he’s done that he tried to murder Clarke (we’ll stick with her because that’s who he looked at horrified at the end of the episode) and told her he didn’t need her.

We also know that the 2199 calls will come up again tied to feelings, and being left to die. So there’s MORE coming. We also know that Bellamy and Clarke are going to work through her leaving him in the pit and move their relationship forward in ep3, We know Clarke will watch him leave on a mission with Echo and Octavia. So we know that ep3 will have time to address BOTH relationships, Bellarke and B/E. Which has not happened before. We know bellarke will, but we don’t know that B/E will… although with Octavia present chances are good. 

Can I be certain  that this love triangle is coming to a close? No I cannot. It’s a narrative choice. Do I see them setting it up to come to a close. Yes I do. I don’t see it getting soapy and melodramatic. THey tend to save the melodrama for trauma and death, and keep the romance simple and subtle. So do I see them suddenly having Echo and Clarke getting into a fight for ‘my mans?’ no i don’t. Clarke has already stepped back and that is in character for her. Echo is loyal and wants Bellamy to be happy, that is her character, part of that is forgiving Octavia, but when she realizes what’s happening with Bellarke, chances are she’ll step back.
