Best Underrated Shows

Saving Me 

Saving Me is about a lonely old guy who invents a time machine so he can go back to his child self and fix all his past mistakes. I learned about this show from this video titled Watch THIS instead of Hailey's On It by M!n!mal M!ss Art. Despite this video, I was still very excited to watch Hailey's On It. It seemed like a story with a cool premise and cute art style (and ultimately I do really like the show) But Hailey's On It wasn't gonna be out for weeks when I came across this video and this video really sold me on giving Saving Me a try. I never would have even heard of this show without that youtube video which would have been a real shame because Saving Me is fantastic! I hope this show reaches more people and I'm dying for a season 3!!!!!

House of Anubis

Mystery is my favorite genre and House of Anubis is chuck full of it. I used to be obsessed with this show back in high school. I had so much fun coming up with theories and live-blogging my thoughts and opinions about each new episode. Some of the acting & dialogue could be a little cringe sometimes but the story is just so good that it doesn't matter. I've heard that Het Huis Anubis (the Dutch version of the show that House of Anubis is based on) is even better, though I haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

Over the Garden Wall

Those of us who have seen Over the Garden Wall seem to agree that this show is amazing! Which makes it feel a little weird to call it underrated. But it seems like so few people have actually seen it. Maybe because it was a mini series, it couldn't reach the same level of popularity as other shows of similar quality. If you like Gravity Falls, you'll likely enjoy Over the Garden Wall as well. (Wirt is even voiced by the same guy who voiced Dipper!) I would highly recommend anyone that hasn't seen it already.

Dead End: Paranormal Park

I feel like it's pretty rare for animated series to exist in the horror genre for some reason. It truly is an untapped market. But if you love horror and animation, Dead End is the show for you! (Of course it's kid friendly horror since the target audience is children) The two main characters, Barney and Norma get jobs at a haunted park and work together to fight ghosts and demons. Dead End has a super cute animation style, in my opinion, and a very diverse set of characters. I encourage everyone to watch it!

Just Add Magic

Just Add Magic is based on a children's book by the same name. It's a show about three girls who love to cook and basically discover that they can use cooking to do magic. It's a pretty interesting take on how magic works in their universe. It's very fun to watch. All of the actors are also so talented! And one of those actors is Zach Callison (the voice of Steven Universe)!

The friendship between the trio is awe-inspiring! They have so much chemistry. It's a pretty fun watch.

The Last Kids On Earth

Based on a comic of the same name, this show is about a group of kids who have to survive on their own when a zombie apocalypse breaks out. And other various creatures start to threaten them (or even become their allies) It's basically a cute found family story. The premise is pretty simplistic but that's what I love about it. The animation style of The Last Kids On Earth is so beautiful as well!

I'm still waiting for a season 3!!!!!

Code Lyoko

I remember as a kid being aware of this show and thinking it looked kind of interesting (and I always loved the theme song!!) but I never ended up watching it back then because I let peer pressure get the better of me. I remember I met someone who brought up how much they loved the show. When I heard them express that interest, I was at first excited to ask them more but before I had the chance, everyone else started making fun of him for liking Code Lyoko.

I guess it was like the nerd show or something? I don't really know why it was considered cringe to like Code Lyoko but upon seeing my peers act this way, I decided I can't like Code Lyoko if I want to fit in. So, I avoided watching it. But earlier this year, when I was flipping through channels, they were showing old episodes of Code Lyoko! I was intrigued since I remembered it from childhood and thought I'd actually give it a chance this time. And it's actually a pretty good show! It can be slow at times but overall I enjoy it.

If you're like me and avoided watching this back then due to peer pressure, I highly recommend leaving that in the past and just letting yourself enjoy this show!!

Slugterra

Slugterra is honestly pretty similar to Pokemon, except it's slugs! And the entire series takes place underground. Basically, there's a whole underground world called Slugterra, home to slugs, trolls, moles, etc. And all the slugs have cool powers so the people collect & befriend slugs so they can use them as weapons ("slugslinging"). If you like Pokemon, you're sure to like Slugterra!

Detentionaire

I discovered Detentionaire randomly while I was searching through Amazon's library of cartoons. I was looking for a new show to watch and just stumbled upon this one. It looked pretty interesting and I was surprised to see it was a show from 2011. I don't know how I missed this show back then. Idk if maybe it only aired in Canada or something? (cuz it's a Canadian show) But anyways, Detentionaire is such an intriguing show where the main character, Lee, discovers some grand conspiracy and has to try to expose it to prove his innocence so he can get out of detention. It's such an interesting concept. And, as I mentioned earlier, mystery is my favor genre, so I had a lot of fun with this one.

The only problem though is, of course, it ends on a cliffhanger. The show got canceled before they had the chance to conclude the story in a satisfying way (or any type of way) so watch at your own risk.

Loki S2 Pre-E6 Thoughts

So I know that this is totally random content to give to y'all this morning, but I wanted to post up my thoughts about the series before its final episode airs tomorrow. I have, in the past, talked about my thoughts on S1 and how I really did like it until the last 5 minutes of Episode 6 and how out-of-nowhere-forced the Sylvie/Loki kiss felt (I was physically cringing about it).

Given how S1 ended, I was a bit wary about S2, but decided to watch it anyway, and holy hell I think Season Two is KNOCKING it out of the park. I'm loving it as much as I loved Moon Knight, and it's right up there now in my top 5. The episodes are SO cinematically beautiful, well written and flow nicely, the characters are all so charming, and the Mobius/Loki relationship is being built up so much that it COULD lead to more or canonization in the final episode. During the past 5 weeks, I've been lurking on the meta spaces for Loki on Twitter and Tumblr, and wow the nostalgia I feel for it, it SO reminds me of the hey-day of my Johnlock meta-ing before S4.

I think my only gripe right now with this season is that they wasted Sophia DiMartino... her character Sylvie feels like such a... filler character (like they just put her in there because she was in the first season and they didn't know what to do with her this season)? But I think ALSO she's meant to be a counter-mirror to Loki, to show that he ISN'T like her anymore, that he grew and changed for the better with the positive influences in his life, and unlike her he doesn't WANT to be alone and such. And they're REALLY making her so unlikeable this season for me... I'm glad that it's looking like they're pretty much not going the Sylvie/Loki route (and I honestly don't see how people who ship it think it will canonically turn around at this point), but the showrunners are having her have every interaction between her and Loki rather hostile, demoralizing, or toxic. And rather that, they're countering it by showing a more positive alternative for Loki with Mobius as his potential romantic partner. Which is fantastic because I've shipped Lokius since Mobius came on the screen in S1, LOL. I just think they could have done that in S2 without making Sylvie an unlikeable character (like have her be a cheerleader for them instead?) I dunno. It's a shame because I did like her in S1. Don't like her at all in S2. She's so MEAN to EVERYONE. To Mobius especially, like CHILL girl, let a man stress-eat, JEEZ.

And here's the rant I actually wanted to write this post about because I didn't want to clutter up other people's threads with it: So, every week, I usually watch breakdowns and review videos so I can understand the characters and their comic counter parts a bit better, and usually the breakdowns are really good because they show the nods to comic-canon things and such. But OMG these past two weeks, I had to stop watching the reviews because LITERALLY all of them ship Sylvie/Loki and are trying SO hard to prove that it's canon when the past few weeks it's only been more and more likely that it's not happening.

NONE of Big Name Reviewers (NRS and SC specifically, if ya know you know) acknowledged AT ALL the RIDICULOUS amount of romantic tropes and dopey staring that Episodes 4 and 5 had (Loki watches Mobius through a window the first time he finds him, and the second time before going to talk to Mobius again Loki LITERALLY groomed himself and then stutters like a lovesick teenager. It was very rom-com; and they're skirting around the fact that all the empty places in the TVA that Loki kept slipping to were ALL places that Loki tshared time with Mobius in... I CAN GO ON FOREVER HERE, AND AND AND that Loki is constantly panicking if he can't find Mobius). LIKE. NONE OF THE REVIEWERS, who literally break down all the episodes and point out shit like All That for het-ships, just won't acknowledge any of it!! They glossed over both Loki's and Sylvie's bisexuality confirmations in S1, and only briefly mentioned their genderfluidity in the comics and in actual mythology. I usually watch the breakdowns because I'm not familiar with comic lore so I find it interesting to learn about those backstories, as well as little details they find, but they've been dropping the ball ALL season, and EVERY one of them mention EVERY single breakdown that Loki just wants to get back to "his one true love Sylvie!!", like what are you smoking?!?!? I was getting SO FRUSTRATED because they skipped over LARGE chunks of E5, especially, just pointing out the surface level stuff instead. I literally turned it off after all that.

THAT ALL SAID, since episode one it's been clear that Sylvie wants NOTHING to do with Loki – she just wants to live a quiet simple life. Then when shit goes bad, she blames Loki for all the problems SHE caused, shits on Mobius every chance she gets, and then in that bar scene when Loki's bearing his soul to her, telling her that he wants his friends back and DOESN'T want to be alone, she basically is like "tough titties" and leaves him ALONE, showing she's not a friend at all.

But the reviewers literally just gloss over all of this. ANYWAY.

Ugh, sorry about that, that's been eating at me for like 3 weeks and last week's reviews finally just pissed me off so much because even casually watching the show I could see all this shit. I only REALLY started believing Lokius could happen after Episode 4 aired, and then Episode 5 had me reeling.

I am DYING to write meta about every episode as it comes out... I just feel that other people are writing better stuff than I could, and much faster than I have time for, and really it's nice to be on the reader side of things for a change. I just... don't want to add in my own two cents to their posts because I'd feel I'm intruding, is all.

I have lots of hope about where Episode 6 will go... like I'm feeling pretty good about them canonizing Lokius... However... I'm not gonna be disappointed if it doesn't get canonized simply because this is Disney and I am REALLY not thinking they're going to explore Loki's comic-canon genderfluidity and sexuality on a surface level.

Good thing I eat subtext for breakfast LOL. I lived through BBC Sherlock, hahah. BUT... can I get a third ship canonized in one year??? Is it wishful thinking? Oh, for sure. I hope so. I would be so happy if Disney even ACKNOWLEDGED that they love each other But I'm not expecting it. I'll be happy with another hug at least, or a forehead touch or hand holding. I'm a simple gal.

Honestly though, I do inevitably want the last episode to have Loki as the ruler with his friends, because they built up to this for 12 episodes, I DON'T want an unhappy ending for the sake of a twist or whatever. Truly let him be the Loki Who Remains (a callback to Episode One) as the Keeper of Time with Bea, O.B., Casey, and Mobius at his side <3

I LOVE the character development of Loki in this series, too. I legit didn't really care for Loki all that much in the MCU, but this series did the same to him for me that FatWS did to Bucky for me: Make me want to see MORE of them and their adventures with their new friends.

My nonexhaustive list of protocol thoughts up to ep 20 since I've been relistening during the hiatus:

The protocol statements are pretty solid overall. I've seen some complaints comparing it to tma s1 and saying they aren't as memorable, but let's be real, we've been in the tma soup for eight-ish years now, so there's a reason for that. Not all of them hit the mark, but not all of them hit the mark in tma either

I think the deviation from standard statement format was a good choice for the series as it makes a lot of it feel fresher. The voicemail ones are especially fun to me

Alex's horror is oddly Wet

The Mr. Bonzo statements are really really good. They're good guys

Something I didn't notice initially is that the statement giver in ep 13 and the statement giver in ep 17 are both named Darrien. This could easily be a case of the michaels once again, but it seems a bit more...pointed, given the subject matter of ep 17

The Madam E episode isn't as cringe upon second listening as I remember it being made out to be. Kinda embarrassing and over the top? Yes, but it's not terrible. I actually found myself a bit disappointed at the end that Madam E is a character that allegedly dies, because she's someone I'd actually be interested from hearing from again with her relation to Ink5soul

I remember at the beginning seeing some posts attempting to categorize the types of statements that Chester and Norris (and Augustus) read, but with this many out now I feel like the categorization doesn't quite work. That being said, I do think it's interesting that compulsion plays a big role in the only two Augustus statements thus far

Things that I've been less enthused about during this first season: the romance subplot (though it seems to be moving away from that? I'm not sure). The guest episodes are a bit hit or miss (not bad, but I think that some of them fail to capture the right tone for the show) and I feel like front-loading the season with them probably wasn't the best choice. This is only season one, so I'm not expecting all the answers currently, but I'm hoping to get a bit more to chew on for these last ten episodes

As for things I'm looking for in the coming episodes: for now, the character I'm least interested in is Sam, which is kinda wild considering he's the protagonist. That said, I do think he's suffering a bit from protagonist syndrome at the moment, and I'm hoping that his motives and morals get a bit more messy in the future

Getting around to the variety series that was made for Creation of the Gods (Episode 1) (Episode 2) (Episode 3)

Episode 1

Deng Chanyu wasn't in the first movie so at this point we don't really have an idea of what she's like as a character. But her actress is here and she looks cool.

The actor for Nezha is so tall now lol. Them kids grow up fast.

Ohh the guy who plays Jiang Wenhuan (Huang Xiyan) is Taiwanese.

Wu Xin: Doesn't this place look like a station? Wuershan: If you hadn't mentioned it, I wouldn't have been able to tell. A man who says it like it is.

The entire cast was relatively confident about seeing themselves from five years prior but then we get flash forwards to them cringing so hard their souls leave their bodies lol.

Did Chen Muchi change his name? He introduced himself as Hai Liang.

They were all cringing at Li Yunrui's dancing XD But you know what I noticed? He was dancing to EXO Lay's Lose Control lmao.

Apparently some of the initial assessments were kind of odd and unusual ^^;; But I guess they were meant to kind of get the people to let loose.

So apparently Yu Shi was in a basketball ad and the casting directors wanted to find him but he didn't look at his dms, so they went through his team's leader.

I'm trying to understand the exercise that Liu Tianchi set for Yu Shi. I think he had to tell the story while putting the music stands, and while he did, she kept telling him to look at her. Wuershan said that that exercise was for evaluating concentration, in terms of whether you can tell a story/deliver meaningful dialogue while doing something else.

Liu Tianchi does seem like a pretty intense acting teacher from what I've seen of her, in both this clip and in the three-episode behind the scenes documentary ^^;;

Hou Wenyuan was going to audition for Meteor Garden but ended up also auditioning for Fengshen lol.

Oh wow Ci Sha is from Daliang mountain :o I watched a documentary on Daliang mountain so I recognize it. Ci Sha had auditioned for both Fengshen and an idol show, so his company asked him if he wanted to be an actor or an idol. He was attracted to the action of Fengshen so he chose that.

Huang Xiyan used to go by Huang Tingxuan.

Huang Xiyan's audition was so rough omg, two people held him down while he delivered his lines lol. And then while continuing with his piece he was so nervous that he was scratching at the carpet and was called out by Liu Tianchi ToT

So many of the guys are basketball players. I guess the casting directors want tall guys.

Li Yunrui had to deliver his lines over the construction noises which...he didn't lol.

They ran through a bunch of photos of people who hadn't made it through the audition and I think this is Wang Zhuocheng? And earlier there was an idol who'd auditioned too (and they were already an idol at that time).

So it sounds like the training camp was technically the last part of the audition.

Li Yunrui's nickname is 小林 btw. I initially though I remembered his surname incorrectly but no it looks like his nickname is not related to his name.

So here are the room combinations. Not everyone is here though. Maybe there were a few different training camps.

Aw Naxi is the 樓長. I think she is older than most of the guys (being 27 compared to the guys who seem early 20s). So it makes sense she'd be more responsible I guess.

Li Yunrui and Huang Xiyan came a week later so they ended up being roommates.

So the first trainer Wang Jinwu was literally a military trainer (and what a fitting name, 王金武) and the early morning training was military-style. Which was advantageous for Chen Muchi who was a soldier.

I feel bad for Naran because she's still learning Mandarin but still has to take part in all of the training ToT

Btw they all call Naran "Nana" :3

To be fair I think Wang Jinwu is fairly reasonable. When the trainees do anything that's not up to expectation, he tells them what he expects and then tells them not to do it the next time. He doesn't just yell at them without explaining his expectations.

Wu Yafan said that when he was at the Shaolin school he also had to wake up early and then run for 2km so he was used to that kind of life ToT

Episode 2

Naran is here!

One thing of note is that since a lot of these actors were unknowns before this movie, they haven't really developed variety skills. So the kind of comedy on this show is more down to earth.

Yeah it kind of wasn't fair to Naran to study the same tongue twisters at that time (when she was still relying on translators). So the performance trainers spent one-on-one time to just train her pronunciation.

The way Yu Shi had a big smile on his face when he was just learning to ride horses and the horse was just walking slowly. That would probably be me though, horseback riding looks fun.

And then they had to practise riding together with others.

The MC asked if the actors ever through it was tedious that they had to spend so much time on the basics of horseback riding. Yu Shi said that when he played basketball sometimes he'd spend 1.5 hrs just practising basics without even touching the ball, so it wasn't so unfathomable to him.

A horse was purchased for each actor, and Naxi had two horses.

Aw some of the trainees (including Chen Muchi and Yu Shi) couldn't swim so they had to start from the basics. Wuershan said that in the second movie there'd be battles in water.

They trained in boxing and sword arts and also just general fitness. Honestly the fitness part looks the toughest to me ToT I would fold like a wet noodle. The exercises they did to harden their abs like bro. They were all soooo tired T_T And they had martial arts lessons nearly every day, sometimes twice a day. Rough times.

The martial arts trainer was like "I'll give you a break, let's do stretching" and a bunch of them found stretching the toughest lol.

Hehe Sang Laoshi was nicer to Wu Yafan than the older guys. And all the instances of Wu Yafan 偷懶

The history teacher trying to engage Wu Yafan in the lesson by asking him how old he is. But otherwise everyone struggling to stay awake ToT

The history teacher asked the actors to read the passages in their home dialect, which for Huang Xiyan would have been Taiwanese but Huang Xiyan was like omg this is so difficult. But the history deduced that Huang Xiyan probably wasn't as good in Taiwanese.

Oh right Hou Wenyuan is from Shenzhen so he knows some Cantonese. His pronunciation isn't super good but he seems to know enough to keep reading.

I wonder if they know what roles they're going to be playing at this point.

So they have 6 meals a day but they're smaller portions.

LMAO the reason why Naxi knew what the guys ate during their late night snack that night was because she and Nana had snuck out to eat late night snack as well and bumped into them XD EXACTLY a case of "girl what were YOU doing at the devil's sacrament?"

At the training facility, Wu Yafan had a different meal plan with a wider variety of foods so the other guys would ask to borrow his card to get different food that would not have been allowed on their diet.

Performance time. I think this is basically their big evaluation and they could be sent home if their performance is not up to standard.

Teacher Zhou Mi told the trainees not to be too nervous because if they did anything wrong, it would be his fault, which drew laughs. But also Liu Tianchi said that it was a teacher's fault if they didn't teach a student well, which I think is a rather Chinese thing. Like how when kids do something wrong, it's their parents' fault for not teaching the child properly.

I agree that the dance looks odd but we can also see how physically demanding it is. And also it's easy to see when you're not doing the actions properly (especially with the bigger actions).

During the first martial arts portion with the weapons, Wuershan said that the point was for the trainees to be able to match each other's rhythm when clashing.

Now onto individual martial arts performances :o

Yeah so throughout the episode I saw another female trainee whom I didn't recognize, and I think basically she and Naxi were competing for the same position as Deng Chanyu. So they both trained in dual blades.

First evaluation after 6 weeks. Wuershan said that while there was a score, he was mostly looking at each trainee's capabilities and how much room they had to grow.

Back from new year's vacation

Wu Yafan said that during the holidays he was doing homework (to make up for missed time at school) and everyone laughed.

Zhou Mi is kinda funny as an instructor though. I know he seemed really strict at first but now that we get to know him we see how he jokes around.

Ci Sha said that he celebrates new year at a different time as a member of the Yi ethnic group (Nov 20). So Lunar new year was just chillage time for him and he didn't make it all the way home.

I noticed this in the last episode but some of the music editing in this show isn't great. There were some scenes where people were talking and the background music was so loud. In this episode there was a part where the loud background music abruptly stopped, it wasn't even a fade out.

Yu Shi hurt his ankle playing basketball during his break and he was like 'nah I'm good to go now!' but apparently it was still hurting ^^;; Then they were playing basketball again and he hurt his other ankle.

Chen Muchi hurt his foot "break dancing"...I hate to laugh but the whole ordeal was kind of funny XD Like all the other guys were laughing XD First at transporting him out on the trolley and then the guys waving to him with a farewell song as he went to the hospital lmao

Oh interesting, so the purpose of this exercise was to more or less get an idea of a person's outline. Liu Tianchi pointed out that while some of the older guys were only pointing out their characteristics, Wu Yafan had painted a general picture, a muscular man with hair like feathers that was fierce.

So these guys were supposed to play "jiangshi" (which, by the way, their entire getup did make me laugh XD). I'm not 100% sure which definition of jiangshi they're going with but in this case they seem more zombie-like.

Oh damn we are getting strict Zhou Mi again!!!!!! Yu Shi couldn't recite a passage during their performance class and Zhou Mi was like "the way you're performing right now, do you respect me?"

Jing Niansong was working with Chen Muchi and Yu Shi on some skits and he was saying that he liked that they were starting to have thoughts on acting and performance. He didn't want them to be puppets, he needed them to be actors.

I've been thinking this since episode 1 but at some angles, Li Yunrui looks a lot like Zhang Yujian.

Show Recommendations

1. Heaven's Gate: The Cult of Cults

So this is a docuseries with only 4 episodes. I've never been super familiar with cults. I've heard of some by name through crime shows, but I never really made an effort to learn more about them in detail.

Heaven's Gate is surprisingly one I did know in a general sense, but I honestly can't tell you where I learned it from. X-Files? Parks and Rec? South Park? I have no idea. Anyway, this documentary is fantastic, and I honestly feel such sympathy for the survivors and those that died.

It's easy to say that you would never fall for a cult, but a lot of these people were smart, college-educated, and had loved ones. They really weren't that different from you and me. What got them was their need to feel purposeful, for their lives to mean more than what they already had, to belong to something special. And that's definitely relatable.

2. CBS Ghosts

Hear me out. I know those who watched BBC Ghosts either don't like this show or don't want to give it a chance since they first heard about it. I was the same way. But then I got through the first two or three episodes, and I found that there was something special. This show isn't perfect, and sometimes the humor can be a little cringe. But the Ghosts and Livings are sweet and lovable, and they do care about each other. And as someone who is tired of media that is gritty and mean-spirited, it's really refreshing. So I definitely recommend watching it, but I suggest watching BBC Ghosts too.

3. Living Single

I loved everything about this show. The music, the fashion, the characters, the story arcs. I literally cried when I finished the show because I didn't want it to end. It's such a disappointment that they didn't get more seasons nor did the executives treat the actors the way they should have because of that the writing suffered a little towards the end. I truly recommend this show. It's so funny and the characters are all lovable. The first two episodes are a little rough because I don't think they knew who Kyle and Obie were yet, but once they do WOW. What a group of friends.

4. The Last of Us

I'm speaking to the few that didn't watch this show. Zombie-fatigue is real. And this is the very definition of gritty and heartbreak that i was talking about earlier.

HOWEVER!

This show is less about zombies and more about human relationships. Despite immense heartbreak and loss, you can still find love in all its many facets and attempts to live again. Also, my favorite thing is that it also shows you the lengths that you would go for a loved one. What's the point of morals in an apocalyptic world?

5. Jinny's Kitchen

So, normally, I don't watch these types of reality shows. Actually, I don't watch reality shows at all. But seeing as I'm a fan of BTS, I heard that Taehyung was on this cooking show, and for those of you that don't know he's not much of a cook. Like at all. Before this, I'm pretty sure the only thing he knew how to do really well was ramen lol. Anyway, the premise of the show is that these celebrities get together to open a pop-up Korean restaurant for a week in Mexico. It's hilarious, especially when the two interns (Wooshik and Taehyung) dream about quitting and going on vacation or starting their own union.

The Origins of Kavrillia - Part One

I've been drawing green critters with antennae since I was thirteen years old. They've changed their look through the years, and have inhabited three different fictional universes (including my own, original one), and it's fun to look back and see how they evolved along with my art.

1993

Above left: I drew a crowded pool scene and included two Secret Service aliens guarding a Chelsea Clinton-esque alien. They were the earliest prototypes of Bronzar! Above right: What thirteen-year-old me thought glamorous models wore, or something.

The first iteration of the creatures that eventually became Kavrillians (hereafter "CTEBK") had tentacles instead of hands, green skin, and three legs. Males also had a third eye and unique brown skin markings, and were usually bald. The females always had brown hair to match the males' markings. I remember drawing a blonde one once and thinking it looked very wrong.

During this time period the CTEBK existed in a settling loosely based on John Christopher's Tripods trilogy. The aliens in the books were described as not humanoid but having green skin, three legs, and tentacles. I started with that general concept, made them humanoid, and then ran with my own ideas from there. I had no idea I'd still be drawing these creatures in my 40s!

1994

Ah yes, the Big Snout Period. Why did their snouts get so huge and square? Why are the balls on their antennae so huge? I dunno.

During this time period the CTEBK were in the universe of the 1953 film version of War of the Worlds and the War of the Worlds TV series that originally ran from 1988 to 1990, but which I only discovered a few years later in reruns. It was not a very good show, looking back, but at the time I was new to sci-fi and it got my imagination running wild.

I was also inspired by the tie-in novel War of the Worlds: The Resurrection that was written by J.M. Dillard in 1988. You have that book to blame for the glut of X names on Kavrillia, as 14-year-old me really liked Xana and Xashron. Other names from the series that inspired me were Oshar, Horek, Tallick, Ardix, Tila, Xeera, and Konar. (Bayda and Ceeto, not as much. The fact that I can still remember all those names and how to spell them three decades later is...well, either impressive or cringe-worthy. Or both.)

Visually, the CTEBK had even less in common with the aliens from the 1953/1988 version of War of the Worlds than they did with the ones in the Tripods trilogy.

While the physical forms had absolutely nothing in common, I did take story inspiration from the final episode of the series, which showed flashbacks to the aliens' homeworld. It is revealed that their leader assassinated the previous one and lied to their people, destroying their planet in his mad rush to avenge the death of his beloved wife in the 1953 invasion. Young teen me ate that melodramatic, angsty, romantic shit up.

I ended up writing a ton of fanfics to explain how no, of course the despotic leader didn't die in the last episode when his secrets were exposed. Don't be silly! Yes, we watched him dissolve into goo, but--hey, look, a squirrel! Anyway, it was all a misunderstanding, and with so few of their people left they grudgingly decided to let bygones be bygones. And what do you know? His wife hadn't died after all! She'd actually been in suspended animation since 1953, just like the aliens that awoke at the start of the TV series. Once reunited, he reforms, they come to terms with the evil he had done in her absence, and they fall in love all over again. They all leave Earth and go to colonize an uninhabited planet somewhere. The former bad guy and his long-lost wife have five adorable children and live happily ever after! ^_^ (Typical teenage girl fanfic stuff, in other words.)

So where does my universe come in?

Well, in fleshing out the characters I decided the despot-turned-devoted-family-man idolized a former ruler of their people, the way some Americans idolize Abraham Lincoln. I looked in a baby name dictionary under X and found Xerxes. Teenage me wasn't sure how to pronounce that so I just took out the extra X and made it Xeres (said like ZEER-ees). When I wrote the fic about my WotW OTP having their fifth child, they named him after that old ruler.

At that point the story had devolved into a sitcom, with all the hijinks and heartwarming moments in a palace filled with cute kids and their over-the-top lovey-dovey parents. I thought about trying to move the story forward into the next generation, but those story ideas never really took off. Instead I started wondering about a prequel...

okay time for some dotty backstory. if you've been on my blog for all this you get a veteran's discount.

i am mabel at heart, i love shipping and will ship any two characters. i don't care if it's a healthy, positive relationship or a fucking disaster, if i see an interesting story between two characters, i'm there for it. but the ones that i find most interesting, my otps...i have not had the most luck with. i bet on losing ships. from my plucky beginnings in the mlp fandom, to my horrid experience in the voltron fandom...the less i say about THAT the better.

a ship becoming Endgame is not very important to me, in fact i ship many things i'd never want to see in canon, but it hurts doubly so to be snubbed by canon, and be scrounging for table scraps and batting away hate anons in fan space.

there have been a few times i've shipped the fandom juggernaut, like wrightworth or komahina, but they already were long before i joined their respective fandoms. they didn't feel like they were mine. i was never a successful Early Investor.

i started shipping billford as a joke in my head summer 2015, before the last mabelcorn episode that actually showed their backstory, because i figured the author of the journals and the series' main antagonist would have had some history, and it seemed like it had more potential for a dark, interesting, adult story than billdip, the gf fandom's biggest pair. but i didn't expect anything from canon.

and then the last mabelcorn happened. and then the finale with the bondage shit and piano serenade. and the journal. each one was like a punch to the solar plexus in the best way. i NEVER thought we'd get so much bait. but like...it's not Real real, right? some people in fandom joked about it, but plenty others were vehement in hating it, and it was never the number one thing being talked about. i was quiet about my enjoyment of it, would like posts about it but not reblog, or reblog without tagging the ship name, because i was 16 and terrified of being Cringe. i drifted away from the fandom and found other interests. i raised my eyebrows a bit at some of the things alex hirsch was saying in the big 2023 fan interview about their relationship, but again...skepticles.

and then i was vindicated harder than i could have ever imagined with the new book. not only by all the canon romantic language used, the angst, the compelling depiction of abuse, but by the fandom. it's not just A ship, it is the ship, not just in gf fandom but across the website. it has topped the tumblr ship rankings for two weeks, only behind poolverine, a blockbuster mcu ship.

they used the divorce gif as the post footer. i must be in bill cipher's lotus eater machine. i am having such a fucking ball you can't even imagine.

the only comparable situation i can think of, where i was an almost-prophet, was when i started crackshipping amethyst and peridot steven universe shortly after s2 started, and then we got all that interaction between them. but ultimately, lapidot won over in the court of public opinion, albeit neither ship actually became canon.

this, to me, is like if amedot got a whole lore-heavy canon story about their relationship and became the number one ship in the whole SU fandom. my little joke ship has gone full rags-to-riches. this is my roman empire.

This was one of my first artstyles in the history of my art.

It had no details nor particular things,which is pretty normal since it was an 8-10 year old's artstyle.

I honestly think it's iconic amongst my friends and especially ex classmates from elementary school...I used to be the class artist back then, haha!

Since the artstyle is a bit modified,I'll share some actual drawings!!

This is just a small part of the amount of drawings I have with these photos...(ignore the hand,I took those photos something like two years ago and I didn't have acrylic nails back then)I used to make comics about my OCS and my selfsona...The girl in the drawings.Since my real name is Maya and I was pretty edgy back then,I decided DemonGirlMaya to be my name.

After being ok with my gender for years,my brain decided it was time to start a trans era because why not.

It lasted something like less than a year and I honestly don't think it should have started.It was so cringe, especially because it was fake after all.

The characters were thick as fuck,they looked so weird and boxy.

I left the piggy fandom and created my own series,“Life is a tale” which I erased from my likings after two or three months of trying to make the episodes...Animating became hard and boring,so I gave up a bit...I was obsessed with gore.

The 500th ep:

Watched this one to get the couch scene. Turns out it was a deleted scene. *sighs

Am I mistaken, or for some reason, with half a million dollars budget, S*U cannot find someone to write a fully-fledged, self-contained, coherent, and reasonable story that would last the whole 40 minutes? For their important milestone episode?

On the other hand, the delivery is just so cringe, like they (the characters) are all pretending to like each other and be excited about their reunion. Why is Nick here, he doesn't have to be here, just to be trashed, again? All the reddit Stabler simps want him instead, may as well, but I don't really care.

On Liv's (yet another, is that really necessary, why are there so many) past fuckbuddy "mask off"...yikes. It feels like just another non sequitur to be added to the Benson Trauma Bingo Card™ and never mentioned again. (I heard there's some age gap inconsistency, hmm.) And for all her readiness-to-call-everyone-a-victim-to-be-coddled she completely dismisses any implication of herself being one (like it's a bad thing and I'm so good it couldn't possibly be me) is some serious psychological issue that's never gonna be addressed. Well, I supposed it was also like this with William Lewis.

The Barba ep:

I hope they would leave Rafael alone.

In principle, I understand why he has to come back as a defense attorney. I've made this point on twitter before, the big guest spots in an ep are usually the victim, the perp, and the defense. And I sure don't want the other two for him. I can even excuse him just going straight to Rita style, we knew he's been having shady side business after all.

But, BUT, the reasons, the motives--two of them now if we count Sightless--are just so lame. He takes this case so he could go easy on Liv on the witness stand despite...professional integrity? And how does he even know about this case in advance before it even goes to trial in such detail that would propel him to do that? Who's tipping him off?

That said, I really don't know much about that case, I don't watch OC or any other eps and both sides suck IMO they can just have a fistfight downstairs at the courthouse, see if I care lolll. Weasley *really* should stop touching Raf. (and I know his name, the misspelling is intentional)

Also, I hate how Liv talks to Rafael now. It was like this also in Sightless, very--have to buzz the buzz word-- gaslight-y. Only she can turn a blind eye to the wrongdoing of whoever she deemed empathize-worthy that day; only she can bend the law to suit whatever agenda she's having at the moment. "I don't trust you," she says. Well, she says that to everyone who happens to piss her off that day. That sounds nothing but emotional blackmail, everyone who values her trust and thinks they are normally trusted is subjected to this, Nick, Amanda, and Rafael specifically. (Weirdly never Sonny, they don't have that kind of relationship IMO.) And it's a shitty move.

She is also increasingly condescending to her colleagues which...

I saw someone on twitter asserted something along the line of "how DARE they think they are entitled to help Olivia Benson", to which I say, it is this kind of thinking that enables that kind of behavior.

[THOUGHTS ON PEAKY BLINDERS, EPISODE 2 - SERIES 6, “BLACK SHIRT”]

in no particular order, just as i’ve had them. obviously, spoilers ahead. (if you've missed last week's thoughts, see here).

after "black day" and "black shirt", i lay my bets that the last episode will be called "black star." because, of course.

still no red right hand. i've just started rewatching s5 and i noticed it's mostly not there either.

i didn't take notes for the first five minutes because I was too absorbed.

per his speech, i reckon i'd vote for tommy.

i really enjoy all of tommy's scenes with lizzie. although their relationship as a romantic pairing does feel like a financial transaction more than anything else, i do think they care about each other. i really enjoyed the way lizzie asked "do you feel this?" and how she commented he acts as though he's watching things through a screen. this season really feels like that, doesn't it?

“moral turpitude” is good name for a horse 🐎.

i'm still unclear as to tommy's relationship with the ira. do they work together? or does he work for them? the first scene in last week's ep seemed to imply that the ira had beat him and that he'd have to do their bidding now. i'm still mildly confused.

i don't know why but i really loved the diagetic train leitmotiv in the scene with the ira woman. the train that passes by and makes the glass rattle? we've never heard that in the garrison and i keep wondering if it might have been because tommy was always drunk and he never noticed?

talking about sound, aside from red right hand's absence, there's a distinct lack of "old school" peaky blinders tracks this season, and i reckon that's very intentional and significant. there was joy division last week, but that's about it. to note that anna calvi's cover of "ain't no grave" had become the new theme song - it's been in both episodes so far. from the bit of research i've done, it was in s5 as well.

tommy cites the bible now? now that's a new one.

we all know that ada is my favourite shelby brother - i really enjoyed that scene between her and tommy outside the garrison. i reckon that's probably the one and only time in the whole episode he actually told the truth to someone. they're really the only two left standing. her saying that she was "trying to be" polly made me sad.

there's another leitmotiv in peaky blinders (at least since s3), of "look at us! look at where we are/how far we've come." it obviously constantly asks the background question of: is this progress? does money/status make you happy? having this sort of moment in front of the garrison is, again, such a moment of brilliance in this show. it's this sort of: nothing's changed - but everything has changed moment between the two of them. the whole dialogue just broke me. “where are you tom? my big brother? do you even remember this place?” the whole thing about them carrying their father's bucket... him responding that they're "alive,” and her saying: "yeah, and you’re still looking for trouble big enough to kill you.” that was just - i've no words. 💔. i don't think ada's ever called him her "big brother" before, and it really broke my heart. especially after her saying he'd have to carry the bucket without her 🥺.

i'm not sure what to say about tommy's seizures apart from the fact that both instances were so. well. shot. and. edited. truly fantastic job.

i love how they’re revisiting all the old locations. alfie's warehouse and all. and i love how much darker and desolate it aesthetically looks now. the cinematography in this whole scene was through the roof.

michael and gina are SO CRINGE. i feel like i have to physically recoil every time either of them are one screen.

tommy's white scarf look was 🥵🥵🥵🥵 was a bit sad when he gave it to arthur lol.

i adored that scene where they beat up the fascists, i've not seen enough people online comment on it. not only was the cinematography again through the roof, but i loved how arthur goes in, tommy steps away, changes his mind, comes back, rips the lads apart, and then goes about his business without a drop of blood on his suit 😆. the sport. this man is even more dangerous sober.

what the fuck was that look? i feel like it's the gina/mosley look all over again. so. much. speculation. will he sleep with diana? also, grace's breaths are back.

mosley's wife calling tommy sexist was lolz, but also strikingly reminded us of both polly and grace's absence. i couldn't help but think that had either of them been alive, they would have been part of that meeting, you know? it's not that he's sexist (in this instance at least), it's that he doesn't have any woman in his life he can trust with that kind of thing anymore. maybe ada? but obviously, she wouldn't want to be part of that. i know it was meant as a "funny" moment, but it just made tommy also look more alone.

as a side note, diana mitford and her family were the inspo behind bellatrix lestrange and black sisters, so here is another connection between hp and peaky - my life has come full circle!!!!!

i do love lizzie for both knowing when her presence is useless, but also knowing how to preserve her interests 😏. she may not be polly or grace, but she sure as hell can hold her ground in other ways.

i know everyone has been talking about that line where tommy says the last person he killed was himself, but one line that really struck me during the jack/tommy exchange (again - the ci-ne-ma-to-gra-phy in that scene 🤯) was this: "what made you angry?" jack nelson asks, and tommy says: "slowness in anything." i think that's such an interesting reflection on his character, and how we got to where we are since 1919.

i've also wrote this down: "every war hero i’ve ever met was someone who wanted to get themselves killed." i can't recall who says it, but i thought it was well put.

i think a lot of that 'one last deal' mentality in tommy, at the moment, isn't about money, or politics. i think it's about avenging polly. i think that just like he told michael, he's got a plan to avenge her death, and he won't rest until that's done. i think that's why he's so intent on the "one last time" rhetoric. although he might very much be lying to himself. i hope but don't think he'll ever really rest.

on that note, i've read online lots of people think tommy is going to die at the end. he could, but i don't think he will. he's tried dying before and it's never worked, i don't see why it would now.

regarding ruby, i just... i said last week that i didn't think/want her to die. i know literally everything is now pointing in that direction (especially with that snapshot of lizzie howling in the trailer at what very much looks like a gypsy funeral) but i don't know... i still hope not? our boy has lost polly, john, grace... i know he's a gangster and realistically these things happen but ruby was meant to bring life in this world, in s4, after so much death. i think he can survive pretty much everything, but the loss of a child... there's no coming back from that. if that's where the series is going, it's going to be so dark and grim - even i might not survive it.

i spent a very long time wondering whether he is calling esmé because she placed the curse, or because she could somehow lift it, before it occurred to me that there is no such thing as magic, ruby clearly has tuberculosis or something 😆. jokes aside, i don't know. tommy's view on religion is so complex. this is the man who clearly said in this very episode that he doesn't believe in god, and in s3 said "religion is just a foolish answer to a foolish question," and yet his belief in witchcraft seems unshakable. and, did anyone else notice how ruby's outbreaks seem to be coordinated with his seizures? is it a curse that's on him and impacting her? andisthereevenafuckingcursegoddamnitisthisallreal? 😭

generally, though, i really enjoyed this episode. it felt a lot less messy than episode one, and i feel like we did get some answers as to what/how tommy is doing. i also don't think i breathed the entire time, it really was a banger. i'm going to have to wait until monday night to watch next week's because i have a friend over on sunday night, so pray for me, haha.

Ok as a Reylo who follows you and was interested in Widojest, what has happened to the show that was bad and what happened with Widojest? If you feel like answering lol I just can't discern much without context, I've searched. Wishing you the best

Hello fellow Reylo!

I'll start this with a caveat that many have said before me, namely that this is a D&D game played by friends and not a scripted story, so my salt and frustration about narrative choices don't necessarily align with the format of the show. So this is all very much my opinion grounded in my very specific tastes.

THAT BEING SAID, for me, the last 20ish episodes of the campaign (the "Aeor" arc) have felt very flat. There's been a lot of fetch-it questing and mystery-box puzzles and monster fighting, and very little growth or development for the PCs (excepting my Warrior Queens B//Y).

A lot of the choices the cast has made during this arc have felt geared towards acquiring items and checking boxes and making jokes, instead of continuing to expand the characters and their relationships (which again, is their right! but I find it really boring!)

In fact, a lot of the character choices have actively halted or regressed the character growth and felt out of left field. I'm thinking particularly of their choice to side with the Empire instead of the Bright Queen when exploring Aeor's resources (which felt like a very early-campaign, "we're all mercenaries in it for the loot" choice).

Re: widojest, it's been hard to see a relationship with so much love and support and growth and discovery and humor and tenderness get torpedoed for the saltine cracker, middle-school dance date of ships (f//j). (F//J had a brutally awkward confession scene where they become a couple in episode 118).

For me, it's not even that widojest isn't canon (I'm an old-timer in fandom and back in my day we shipped stuff that wasn't canon! that was the point of shipping!).

It's that there's been no acknowledgement or processing of either C*aleb's or J*ster's feelings. Or Fj*ord and J*ster's feelings!

It's that FJ*ord's rejection of J*ster hurt her very badly, and they have never talked about it or acknowledged it. It's that the F//J relationship, the way it has developed in-game, is an awkward one-dimensional mess that does nothing for either character's growth. Fj*rd and J*ster have had more meaningful chemistry with other characters.

They have learned nothing about themselves from each other.

So for me, watching them interact as a couple has been very cringe. Their relationship brings out their worst character traits in each other and feels like we've catapulted back to the episodes of the early campaign, before F*jrd and J*ester grew so much as individuals.

to sum up, it's not that anything BAD necessarily happened, but narrative choices have been made by the players that are not rooted in their characters and how they've grown and changed over the last two years.

which is fine! it's their game! but from a storytelling standpoint, as someone who has loved and invested in these characters over the last two years, it's bitterly disappointing.

Okay, I'll admit, I was a little...apprehensive when I first saw the thumbnail and title. Part of it's just me being a bitter Remus Stan, but also...okay, deep breaths, controversial opinion time, get ready:

I don't ship Prinxiety.

Like, at all. 

I can see the appeal, and these dorks were so very, VERY cute in this particular ep, but I was honestly turned off by the ship long ago due to how overwhelmingly popular it is and how some fans characterize these two and treat this relationship as if it's the only valid one, y'know, the works—slight tangent, but that's also why I don't ship Logicality or Remile. I honestly vibe much better with ships like Roceit or Analogical, y'know?

Cutting in for another brief tangent: I'm surprisingly okay with Demus/Dukeceit/Receit/Trashnoodle/Whatever-Their-Ship-Name-Is-Oh-God-Why-Do-They-Have-So-Many-Fucking-Names; maybe it's cause they haven't actually interacted in canon and the fan content gives me such good Gay Disney Villain content, idk man im weird—).

Still, their interactions were both hilarious and sweet and like I said, I see the appeal, it's just not my cup of tea. y'all Prinxiety fans got fucking FED and I'm happy for you nerds. Enjoy ze happy boys!

I guess another factor in my...low-key hesitance when I first saw what the ep was about is that...okay, get ready, another controversial opinion, le gasp: well, I'm not a big Virgil fan. In fact, at times, he swaps places with Patton as my least favorite sides—especially with some of his recent behavior in eps like DWIT (the "prohibit your breathing comment" really triggered me, for example). Sometimes, his attitude, especially around other sides like Roman or Janus, reminds me a little too much of my sister, who I don't have...a very good relationship with. Add to that how the more...intense side of the fandom has a disturbing tendency to turn him into the 'uwu precious woobie emo baby who can do no wrong' while unnecessarily villainizing other CERTAIN sides in the process, and...I think you all see where I'm going with this little rant 😅

However, upon actually watching the ep, he wasn't...that bad? I don't think? I enjoyed watching him be a flustered, disaster-y mess and genuinely excited at the end, his interactions with Roman were nice enough, and him literally pushing Thomas to make a move with Nico despite his obvious panic attack was a nice moment of genuine character development. I like seeing that, that's the good shit right there. And him being all flustered and shit, and smiling so much at the end of the vid was just...well, adorable. This man has no fucking right to be this cute, my god

this episode has cleared my skin, watered my crops, and ended my suffering—an adorable calm before the... angsty fucking shitstorm that’s coming far too soon. Prinxiety stans, enjoy your food.
