Animated adaptations

the 1987 direct-to-video short Dorothy Meets Ozma of Oz has uh. these fuckers. seemingly there's only two. probably because of low animation budget, lol.

well, I say there's two, but it's just one design with a palette swap one has blonde hair and pink coat, the other has black hair and orange coat or something. also it's not evident from the screenshots but these dorks have long, pretty eyelashes and GAWD the voice acting is. well. hear for yourselves.

one of my favourite moments is Ozma turning up, saying "Enough." and bonking a Wheeler on the head with her scepter. here's the time stamp.

oh yeah I'm sure a bunch of folks have seen the Wheelers as seen in Oz Kids courtesy of this post. they appear in the episode Who Stole Santa. (and no it wasn't the Wheelers, obviously, they're just here to be annoying and trying to prevent the characters from taking a specific path.)

the guy in purple, who I'm calling Squeky Wheel, looks a lot like the Wheeler in this Ozma of Oz chapter art by John R. Neill. poor guy got walloped pretty hard.

anyway only Squeaky talks while his two buddies remain silent. these guys are such pushovers and the kids aren't scared of them at all.

Dorothy and the Wizard of Oz (2017-2020) has these little bobble-headed goobers.

can't say I'm crazy about how they look but their characterization as reckless speedsters is a fun one. in one episode they even make friends with Tin Man after he replaces a busted wheel.

Ozu no Mahotsukai (オズの魔法使い, 1986-1987) has a... very strange interpretation of the Wheelers, but then, the series does play fast and loose with the source material as it is, which I don't mind! an adaptation doing something fun with the source material adds an element of unpredictability which I like... so, I'm not terribly surprised by how much they deviate from the book descriptions.

Monthly Update: January 2024

Hello everyone, it's Chattercap! Happy 2024! I hope you all had a wonderful holiday!

Sorry for the belated update, but...I was a little worn out after the New Year, I won't lie!

Gosh, where do I even begin when starting to talk about what I did in December...it was pretty hectic, to say the least. Luckily, I managed to complete the demo of The Deepwater Witch, and it's available now on itch! I also plan on releasing it on Steam in the future.

Now, as for what I needed to do to release that demo...

HURDLE ONE: FINISHING THE SCRIPT

The first thing that I had to do to release The Deepwater Witch was...finish the script? I had completed the first draft, but after receiving beta reader feedback, I found that there were additions that needed to be made. In the first few days of December, I wrote 4500 words, bringing the total of the script to 52k. After receiving additional edits, the script was finalized by December 15th.

HURDLE TWO: DOING THE ART

Heading into the second week of December, I only had a bit of art done. After completing the script, I had revisited the storyboards and basically made entirely new drafts of what art needed to be completed. At that point, I only had sprites and a couple of CG sketches.

From the beginning of December until the 20th, I worked almost exclusively on art, doing 24 backgrounds, 5 CGs, and an additional sprite during that timeframe. It was BUSY, but it was well worth it! I'm happy with how all of the assets turned out.

HURDLE THREE: ...EVERYTHING ELSE???

Heading into the last week of December, I was faced with the daunting task of...doing everything else. Up until this point, I was cool as a cucumber, but I started to panic a LITTLE here.

If you've been following my development up until this point, you'll know that I made the switch from Unity to Godot a couple of months ago. I had done...about 50% of the work that was needed on the engine before pausing to finish TDW's script. So not only did I have to implement core features (things as simple as saving and loading), but I also had to make sure I added polish - a nice looking GUI, animations, and the general polish that I want people to be able to expect from my games.

Here is a non-existent list of what I did from the 22nd of December onward:

BGM/SFX/VA functionality

Mute function

Flexible 2D animation controls

CG management (+ idles, animations)

Sprite management (+ idles, animations, positioning)

Dynamic dialogue layouts

Expression popups.

Credits screen.

Screen shake.

Story flags.

GUI functionality (page toggles, buttons, etc.)

Designed and implemented all GUI.

Save/Load.

Save screenshot function.

Chose and implemented BGM and SFX.

Annotated the script with BGM, SFX, story flag, sprite, CG, expression, and background tags.

Playtesting.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The next thing that you can expect from me is an updated version of MacOS version of The Deepwater Witch. I understand that there are some security issues with the current build (as Apple is very strict when it comes to unauthorized applications), and so I've decided to pay for an Apple Developer License. My application was already processed and approved, so I should be releasing that version in the next few days. You will still receive a pop-up notification alerting you that TDW is not from the App Store, but hopefully it lets you open it without any further hassle.

After that, I plan to release the full version of The Deepwater Witch. Almost everything is done besides some coding and art, and I expect to release it around late January/early February. Following that, I have two projects that I have planned for early spring!

Hi, I'm back again today to ask if GT 23 is worse than The Roaming Lake. I thought maybe I was blind or something but I couldn't see mention of it even after opening my eyes. Please clarify so that important characters like Goku Jr. or Vegeta Jr. knows just how much their series stand against the might of a lake grown legs.

Yeah, I went back and checked and I just forgot that entire section somehow. Well, I'll write it here and then edit it into the original post. No one will ever know!

✨Is it worse than "The Roaming Lake"?✨

Yes, it is. The score is TRL - 23, GT - 0. The streak is still alive!

I was beginning to think this comparison had lost all meaning, and I was being unfair to GT, but I just put on "The Roaming Lake" to get some more screenshots of the lake itself, and oh my gosh it is so much more pleasant to watch. I hated this episode the last few times I've seen it, but now, after wandering through the desert of quality that is Dragon Ball GT, "The Roaming Lake" has come to me to quench my thirst.

There's a lot of intanglibles to it, things that I can't communicate through words and images. As bad a story as "The Roaming Lake" is, it still has the same musical score found in any Dragon Ball Episode, so when Goku finds the Lake--both times-- there's a majestic swell of music, the same one you hear in every other DB Episode when something beautiful appears just over the horizon. It just makes you feel good, even if the first half of the episode was wasted on useless standing around.

And the colors are just so much more pleasant to look at, even though most of this episode takes place in front of samey backgrounds like the desert.

I already complained plenty about GT Episode 23, but it's a trainwreck of bad plotting. They didn't explain how Baby got back to M2, or how General Rildo didn't get involved until Baby possessed him, and Goku one-shotting Rildo was extremely anti-climactic. And the whole thing with the empty spaceship was kind of pointless too. Why didn't Baby just leave the One-Star Dragon Ball on Pital? If he wanted Saiyan power so badly, why did he try to kill them all in a trap like that?

More importantly, Goku, the main character, has very little agency in GT #23. He just reacts to problems as they arise. He shoots Rildo because Rildo wouldn't let go of their ship. He helps the others escape the star's gravitational field because Pan decided to search for survivors. And he can't do anything on Pital because its' a medical emergency, so he just whines about being hungry and afraid of needles.

In "The Roaming Lake", Goku decides to go looking for the Dragon Balls again, and then he chooses to put that journey on hold to rescue Nam and investigate the drought. He chooses to stand up for him at Giren's village, then he offers to destroy the dam. He drives the plot, instead of the plot driving him. It's a dumb plot, sure, but at least Goku's got both hands on the wheel. In GT 23, he feels like a guest star in his own story.

🍫: what's your favorite and least favorite part of editing?

My favorite part is definitely playing with colors. Recently, For maybe a few weeks at a time, I'll do a challenge where someone other than me will choose a color scheme and a character for me to make a set for. I've only done it twice (third time coming soon!) but I liked working with a set of colors that probably wouldn't be my first choice. Another thing I like is coming up with designs!

Now my least favorite part use to be picking pictures to work with and that still can get a bit tedious, but now it's deciding on the final result. I'm not a perfectionist in the slightest, but I still like my edits to look nice. 9/10 I don't fret over what my edit looks like, but sometimes that little tiny piece of me will be "Are you sure this is good enough?" and I HATE it.

🌸: what's your favorite and least favorite edit you've made?

As usually, my favorites do change! It's hard to keep a favorite or a least one! Hmm. Okay, surprisingly, it's gonna be a BNHA edit, I'll be fair.

The whole set where this is from is amazing, so it's hard choosing one, but oh my gosh I love this so much! I was actually through a Monster High binge watch since May and of course, I had to do my favorite character Clawdeen (who also happens to be lesbian apparently). Working with the lesbian color palette was also fun because I always through that the colors were just so beautiful together.

(But if I was going to choose a BNHA fave it's a tie between the bi Denki Icons, the Pan Mina Icons and the Bi Uraraka icons.)

Now a least favorite... okay, this time it's a BNHA edit and I don't know what it is about Shoto but I always have a hard time doing any edits for him.

This is actually the FOURTH result. I have 3 prototypes before I settled on this one. I like this one lots, but I also felt like I could have done more. I don't know.

🎶: do you listen to music while editing?

I do! I find when I listen to music, it gets me more in a creative mood. Helps me visualize how I want the colors to look and whatnot. I actually elaborate more on that here from the last time I was asked this!

🩰: are there any characters or sources that you find difficulty editing?

I find characters that have little pictures on them difficult to work with, as well as not really popular fandoms.

Example, recently I did Rock Lock icons and because he's not that popular of a character (which sucks because he's like in the top three of my favorite Pros and he's an actual DAD), it was hard to find pictures of him. However, I ended up rewatching most of season 4 and I had fun doing that so no problem there!

Another character is... Meeshell from Ever After High. I couldn't find a lot of pictures of her, so again, I ended up rewatching EAH episodes for her.

It's really just time consuming that makes having to do screenshots for yourself that makes it difficult sometimes.

Okay, so, I want to preface this by saying I am in no way an art student of any capacity whatsoever, so if there’s an actual proper way of going about this then I do not know of it. There are also a lot of images used here, so I think it’s best if it goes under a readmore.

TL:DR - you summed it up very well by saying that colour-picking and matching off of reference photos is so hard, even when you're working with a 3D model that has the same base texture to go from each time =P

So, here is a screenshot of me picking a skin colour from Aqua’s model from KH3 loaded into PMXe (actually, this might be the one from 0.2 looking at the file dates, but I’m pretty sure her model is the same in both games, since they use the same engine) - this is the model I’ve been using for my most recent MMD renders for my selfship with Aqua. I have also included a screenshot showing the skin texture file of this particular model, as well where I colour-picked from that texture directly.

As you may be able to see - although the order of the two colours is inverted from one screenshot to the other, oops - Aqua's skin appears slightly lighter under the default lighting conditions of PMXe (which I have tested and they're the same as those of MMD itself, it's just that her model has slightly glitchy shadows when there aren't any effects applied to it in MMD so I took the screenshot from PMXe instead), compared to how it actually is on the raw texture file. But, the difference is pretty slight.

Now, to compare, here are some screenshots of Aqua in various scenes in KH3, and I’ve tried to show the approximate overall colour her skin appears in each situation (and have included as much of the screenshots as I can to show what the lighting is like in each one). All of these are being compared to the colour picked from Aqua's MMD model on the menu.

These are all from the same time and area of the game (the Land of Departure), although I think the first one might be from a different source or be of gameplay rather than a cutscene:

Then, here are some more images taken from other scenarios - Destiny Islands (i.e. a beach with a bright sun), the Keyblade Graveyard (which I think is set around sunset), and the official render of Aqua from I think the Ultimania? (which should therefore in theory be pretty default lighting conditions):

As you can see, even when I haven't picked from the absolute lightest areas on Aqua's body, her skin tone is still noticeably a bit lighter in KH3 itself than it is on her MMD model (if not just from eyeballing it, the V value which seems to control brightness is higher for all the official tones than the value for model's texture file). So, I should probably technically correct that on the model's texture files, but then I don't know exactly how to get a fully accurate base skin tone for Aqua from combining all the reference pictures.

The main reason for including all of this is that is raises the question of how do I edit the texture for Aria's skintone (and those of my other self-inserts as well) so that it's accurate to my own?

Since, for example, here are some colours taken from a picture of my arm taken a few months ago in my old house, and then also a couple of pictures that I took tonight (all of them were in the bathroom because that's where the light was brightest, but then I don't know how to correct for that):

You can see I also grabbed some examples of my self-inserts' skin tones from their respective reference models, which I'm now realising may or may not be inaccurate to my own to various extents (although I guess Alectra's being closest might make sense given that her reference model is the one I created most recently?). But then even from here, the question remains of which colour to use to correct them, because I'd like it if they were all the same and were also all the same as my own??

I just wrote a Jin fic and even I'm kinda 'awwing' at it, but oh my gosh, I know that when I post it, all I'm gonna do is hate it. I really don't know why that happens. It'll be okay at first and I'll get a lot of people that like it, but i end up just thinking that they are just trying to be nice and that my fic actually sucks and then I read back on it and I hate it so much to the point I want to delete it and i feel super embarrassed that I even put it out to the public. I hope this doesnt happen with this fic tbh. I'll probably post it in a few days. but do you have any tips on how to not look at your writing like your looking at your enemy?

This is so relatable! Honestly, this is how I look at writing (but it took me a while to get there):

Everything you put out there, whether it's fictional or not, it a piece of you. Be kind to yourself. My fics are like me. Sometimes they struggle, sometimes they do well and other times they don't. Other times I look back and wish I could have done better, but honestly at the end of the day that's an irrevocable piece of me. (we're lucky because at least Tumblr has an edit button)

Go back and edit if you need to. Take your time, revise before publishing if you need to. Recruit a beta-reader. Post it and then turn your phone off (which is what I do). Create a Pinterest board filled with screenshots of your favorite/kind asks, comments, etc (it's my favorite thing tbh).

If you feel like you need to delete it, you do you. You're in charge of what you wanna do with your blog, but make sure you're doing it for the right reasons!

The more you write, the better you're going to get. Practice, post, practice. You'll get better, more comfortable, and honestly, more accepting of yourself and fics.

Above all, HAVE FUN! This is meant to be fun, embrace the friendships and this is me giving you permission to quit wondering if people are reblogging/commenting just to be nice. They love your work, and by extension they love you.

hello love! i used social dummy + photoleap to edit/collage the screenshots but they are apple exclusive but even then, social dummy has been removed so not many people can access it unfortunately. i did try looking for something similar on the play store but most of the apps aren't free and/or have in app purchases for more access etc. like ifake is one. there's also MeMiMessages but i beilieve that's only text messgaes. but i'd just try and download those if it works for you and i pretty sure there's also other apps for fake instagrams and twitter.

Most of my editing is done by the Bright & Smooth action by cupidjuice! After that I will usually run Topaz Clean to smooth it out, and then manually adjust the saturation and levels to make the screenie pop~ Depending on the shot, I will sometimes add a gaussian blur filter in the background to add some depth :D

I absolutely love answering the rare asks I get with everything I got, thanks for sending it in! I’m flattered that you’d ask me such a question. 

Don’t feel like you have to apologize though, gosh! I love seeing peeps like you spamming my notes and stuff, it’s really helpful for me to see what posts my followers actually like seeing considering I’ve been trying to focus on more original posts rather than reblogs lately and unlike most of the other Club Penguin blogs I don’t have much of a theme yet. 

My answer is going to be pretty detailed considering introducing someone into a new fandom is quite lengthy so I’m going to have all of this under a “Read More” cut to spare the dashboard scrollers and innocent blog skimmers the pain:

First off, there’s a very important fact I’d like to make clear when talking about entering a kid’s fandom: No matter what age range you make your content for if you’re an older teen/adult don’t enter a fandom for kids if you don’t expect to interact with them at one point. Might seem harsh but it’s true, you don’t even know how many older fandom members I’ve seen be mean, inappropriate, or impatient to little kids coming across their content! Always correctly age restrict or tag whatever’s a little to not-child-friendly and be respectful to any younger fandom members you come across. Us older members are allowed to enjoy this kind of stuff all we want but it was originally “their” game in the first place after all!

I don’t know if you’d like to start your own blog or not but considering other new fandom members may see this they might want this sort of information. As most fandom blogs you can pick a theme that aligns with your talents such as art, animation, gifs, edits, commentary, screenshots, observations, etc. But you don’t have to unless you really want to. Take my blog for example, it’s really whatever pops into my head that I think would make a nice post. That’s really just because my interests change so constantly that I can’t ever stay on one thing to want to do constantly for the blog but still. 

If you ever made a Club Penguin blog though everyone would welcome you with open arms and I’d surely be your first follower, we love seeing new members.

Now that we have that out of the way I’d like to recommend some great CP Tumblr Bloggers since I know for a fact you have a Tumblr blog, I’m going to recommend at least 2-3 at a time so you won’t be overwhelmed and can find some more yourself. I’ll have to leave a lot of my favorites off the list though, sadly, (including some awesome guys who only post Club Penguin stuff once and a while) so please try to look for more yourself:

Artists: @404pengu (Great person, cute art, cute OCs!), @dundotten (Has a really really charming style, reminds me of a storybook.), @weenierufu (Mimics the Club Penguin style so well! You’re going to be seeing a lot of them here in these lists they do a lot for the community.).

Ask Blogs: I made a whole post about all the Club Penguin ask blogs I knew of. It’s really outdated though, I’m going to make a Part 2 soon. ALSO FOLLOW @chibi-penguins IT’S SO ADORABLE.

Random: @party-blaster (Kinda falling in love with this one lately.), @dirtyconfessionsclubpenguin (Freaking hilarious to scroll through when bored.), @penguini-fettuccine (Technically an art blog too but it’s a really cute little blog check it out anyway.).

Now for some Club Penguin YouTubers. I’m going to be more relaxed with the “only posts CP once and a while” thing:

Animators: Hat Pop n’ Sharkbate (Makes some really cool and professional looking little shorts.), WeenieRufus (@weenierufu‘s YouTube, they don’t post Club Penguin all the time but they’re super talented I love their work.), Gustavo Sorian (This guy mimics the style almost perfectly and is really talented! Check him out!), MidnightAurora [Maddie8972] (Breaking the “only 3″ rule a bit but she does some awesome stuff!).

Comedy Sketch Things: NachozRuleCP (I used to watch this guy all the time when I was younger, he’s really talented.), Pup1oneCP (I have a lot of respect for this guy, he’s worth checking out.), Narutohhiii (Really funny from what I remember, probably not the best guy to show to little kids though, pfft.).

CP History And Facts: CPWorld (One of the more known ones I suppose.), Club Penguin Space (Used to own one of my favorite CP blogs ever, he’s great.), BeefyPenguin9 (Really cool guy and seems really dedicated. I’d recommend him a lot.)

There’s also a Discord server that a lot of the popular CP Tumblr bloggers are a part of made by the awesome @skip-the-bellhop. It’s like a little family and I’m known as the “Mom” there, haha. You can always PM me if you want to know more about the server.

I wouldn’t be able to name any good names but I know for a fact there’s a pretty nice community on DeviantArt and Amino! The Twitter community is one of the most known but I’m not a part of it (yet) so I can’t tell you anything about it, sadly. But I might make a Twitter account as a side addition to my blog someday, so maybe one day I might be able to answer your questions about Twitter too.
