To all those wondering, Dracula Daily is back and this time there is a podcast show Re: Dracula which is the audio reading of the book released in chronological order, and it has the VA of the Archivist from The Magnus Archives as Dr Seward!!

Tagged by @celestialspark - Thank you for tagging me ❤️ This came out a little longer than I expected
Last song: According to my YouTube history (I really don’t understand how to use Spotify and I don’t think I ever will at this point), that would be Stranger by The Mechanisms, from Tales To Be Told, Volume II. Idk why, but this song vibrates my brain in exactly the best way. (I feel like that about a lot of songs in this album, especially Lost In The Cosmos, which is honestly weirdly relaxing for a song describing a slow death in painful details, and Pieces, but like, only the chorus)
Show I'm watching: Well, the last show I’ve seen was the newest episode of Helluva Boss, watched it with both of my partners, one of whom knows nothing about this show. It was fun, though, well, don’t want to spoil anything, but I was hoping for something else. Besides that, I intend to watch Stranger Things soon, cause I have read some great fanfics (I wanted to check if any of the authors are on Tumblr, so I could tag them, but for some reason, I can’t open ao3, which is quite concerning considering what happened this month) and decided I might try, even though I am good 7 years late. However, I am not watching it yet, because from what I know so far it feels like the kind of show that will permanently rewire my brain, so I am waiting til I can watch it with my friends, cause I am not going through that alone. If we consider podcasts shows, then I am an active listener of Dracula Daily, the voice acting is great, and I am already swooning and fanning myself like a victorian lady at Quincey P. Morris, which is to be expected, he’s one of my favourite characters. I can’t wait for this year’s holiest love entry tho, I want to see Tumblr go wild for it again. Also, season 2 of Not Quite Dead is coming out in a little more than two weeks (a fair warning to anyone who follows me, I already know I will be insufferable about it ❤️). I binged season 1 in one sitting, I am so excited (there are precisely 0 fanfics for this show on ao3 so far, I am working on changing that, but I’ve been suffering from a serious case of can’t-finish-wips-disease for quite a while now, so we’ll see how it goes)
Book I'm reading: If we’re talking new books, then right now nothing, but the last two I’ve read were: 1 Noce za nocami by Małgorzata Wilk, I loved it, it was exactly what I wanted, and I was so excited to finally get it, I read it on Wattpad back in the day and I preordered it the moment I was able to. It just feels very cozy to me. If you a) know Polish, and b) like gay vampires, I highly recommend it 2 Vampireology from the Ologies book series, cause I’ve never seen it before, I found it at a convention and I may be an adult, but it had vampires and was full of shiny secrets, you can’t possibly expect me to resist that Besides that, I am currently relistening to an audiobook of The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater, because the first time I listened to it, I was in a really bad place mentally, and this in tandem with some incorrect beliefs I had about this book caused me to miss some important things the first time, so now I am doing better I plan to listen to the whole series again, and I am really enjoying it! I know this series goes into some very dark places, but at the point at which I am currently, it is just full of pure joy of exploration and awe-inspiring discovery and listening to it makes me really, really happy right now
Currently obsessed with: Fandom-wise, The Magnus Archives, closely followed by The Mechanisms, a lot of things mentioned above are either basically obsessions, or very close to becoming that, because I can’t just be normal about things Also, vampires are my obsession that has been a constant part of my life practically since I remember, and I doubt it will ever change at this point. If for whatever reason you want to see me ramble, ask me about my opinions on any vampire-related trope or theme, and you will probably get a pretty substantial essay

Does anyone else after just playing a couple of days of Harry's route think oh he's not weird he's just autistic
Because he literally says he doesn't understand social cues
He really seems to struggle with eye contact
He has to have things a certain way
He wears his horse mask almost like a comfort item when he's afraid
And several other things that I as an autistic person are really relating to. I don't know I hope this doesn't start any unnecessary drama or anything.

Y'all I know why Teo takes so long to respond sometimes.
It's going to sound dumb, but hear me out,,, it's to make things feel more realistic. Like (spoiler for day 5) when he gets out of the hospital and had lunch in between each thing he eats he's gone for a bit. That's because it's supposed to feel like he's real. That way you can go about your day too and get small joys when you do get a message from him.
I know it's inconvenient but that's my current theory.

Today's( May 28th )Daily Dracula; I had so many emotions while reading. Even though it was a generally short entry, I've already read Dracula a few times before and knew what was coming. I felt upset by the language and depiction of the Romani people... And that I would make a post all on its own
But also I felt so much hope when Jonathan said that his messages would get out to Mina and to his boss
l gasped in horror and covered my mouth when the count revealed that he had intercepted the messages
This is just a reminder that I've read this book a few times before, and I knew exactly what was coming, but reading this in small pieces has given me such joy and allowed me to feel all of the tiny emotions once again that you might skip over when you're reading a novel as a long piece of literature

August 21-31. If I can just finish August and September and October today, I can reasonably end Dracula Daily on time with everyone else tomorrow...
2023 EDIT: LOL.
AUGUST 21
A shame my return to commentary is marked by this passage specifically. I just don't have much to say about Drac's receipt.
AUGUST 23
Just to remind everyone of what exactly I'm offering with this commentary, I'd like to take this moment to note another Victorian who referenced (Benjamin) Disraeli in his work: Lewis Carroll, whose text of Alice in Wonderland might reference Disraeli and accompanying artwork (by John Tenniel) almost certainly does. I'm no good study of historical politics nor even Alice; this is just something I've seen batted around to the point that I can't see the name "Disraeli" without thinking "Hatter."
To completely change topic, I'm curious about the bat symbolism throughout vampire lore. I know much of it is for the simple reason of nocturnality and bloodsucking, but somehow I feel as if there's so much more to pull from the animal metaphor than I have now. As always, beep me if you've got something!
AUGUST 24
Nurse follows HIPAA law rather than tell Mina that her husband has been talking about strange and fearsome women in the night. Based!
The wedding ring used to seal the horrors away... marriage abolishers would have a field day with this. Heck, the way Mina says she must stop writing to her friend because she must attend to Her Husband... the gears are racing in my mind. I apologize for not having much more substantive material to offer here, but it's all gears as of right now.
AUGUST 24 (LATE EDITION)
*No late edition this year (2023)! I'm working off the old segmentings, so I can catch up with the original missives.
I know there are more charitable readings, but it strikes me again and again how insistent Stoker is on Lucy's lack of knowledge of her own condition. This returns with Mina, too, so that the men have to not only treat but diagnose the concern, which is far from coincidental, in my opinion. Women don't know what's wrong with them-- even that something is wrong with them-- until men point it out, so therefore it is the solemn duty of men to always and forever be pointing out the problems of these perpetually malaised women. Ugh!
AUGUST 25
AUGUST 30
It's funny the way this could read as pregnancy in another context-- I wonder if that was purposeful, and whether it would've crossed people's minds at the time. We did just get Lucy's distress at not being able to romance more than one man...
AUGUST 31
One thing about men is they will just not tell women any information because their stupid weak hearts would explode if they heard. Lucy can't know about her mother; her mother can't know about Lucy; good thing Arthur Holmwood is there to carry all these giant important facts in his brain or else everyone involved would surely perish.
You can see why I have little patience for this book.
General thoughts:
I haven't read much vampstuff as of late, or I would tell you about it here. I have a lot of different things I'm excited about and a good deal of recommendations since I began my commentary, but the only thing I've actually read between our last Dracula-related communication and this one is this article on how Dracula's appearance specifically comes from eugenicist ideas of what criminals look like. The linked article is horrifically uncritical of the theory, and even less interested in interrogating why the (white, Christian, crucially abstinent) vampires of Twilight are described another way. Well, there you are, I suppose; the state of vampire discourse in this world-- not to claim that I can do any better.
I am also disappointed (but not surprised?) to find that people are now reading Dracula as an abusive relationship story. To me this is like reading it as a story about the dangers of female independence-- you're playing right into Stoker's poorly writing hands. I mean, seriously, people; you see a racialized caricature sexually preying on women and you take it at face value? Just read Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson for the love of God.
And with that endorsement for a genuinely good book, our 2023 DracDaily annotations are on the road! Pop back in weekly for more thoughts from me ^__^ Thanks much to everyone who requested their return!
Alright fine after FOUR PEOPLE asked me about Dracula Daily I will in fact be participating if only to satisfy the masses. Instead of memes I am going to be talking about what’s going on subtextually and my varied vampire-as-metaphor thoughts. Also, I really do not like Dracula. Alright? Alright. See reblogs for later additions.

5, 9, & 24 for the book ask :)
(side note inside problems is soooooo good omg your writing is incredible)
ahhhh thank you! that's seriously so nice i'm really happy you liked it <333
5. What genre did you read the most of?
Pretty easily sci-fi/fantasy for this one, I think! (I will forever at the core of me be a genre nerd 😊)
9. Did you get into any new genres?
Probably can't call it "new" exactly, but I read more plays within a few-months window this year than I ever have since the Shakespeare class I took once... and had a lot of fun doing it! For next year it's really a goal of mine to 1. Sit down and finally read some of the major Greek tragedies—I got ahold of a copy of Anne Carson's Oresteia (of "It's rotten work / Not to me. Not if it's you" fame!) recently and I am SERIOUSLY excited to give that a go... and 2. catch up on my Shakespeare comedies/romances, because I genuinely think the only one I've ever read is Midsummer?? and this just seems Not Correct????
24. Did you DNF anything? Why?
I rarely make the conscious decision to DNF something unless it, like, actively offends me or something—and too often not even then—but there are definitely a couple things that I tried to start, made it a couple of chapters into, and then ran out of steam on before they had to go back to the library or some such... Children of Dune comes to mind (I swear I'm coming back for it soon!) and so does The Steerswoman. Also: I am embarrassed to admit that I did NOT keep up with my Dracula Daily past the first couple of weeks and found myself lacking motivation to catch up later on... so that's another thing on my agenda to try again next year!
[end-of-year book ask: send me a number!]

You should know I'm grinning like a madwoman right now BUT you asked and I'm taking the opportunity :))
19th century vampire literature
The obvious: Dracula by Bram Stoker
It's a classic for a reason. Lots of fun! There's Dracula Daily every year if you don't feel like committing to the full 500-or-so pages but I can personally (highly!!) recommend just picking up the book and reading it in like a weeks' time. I promise it's not a very intimidating classic. (The first 50 pages or so alone form a stunning story already. And it's only after that that the suspiciously sapphic women show up. Oh and did I mention there's a very weird yet adorable and knowledgeable professor, who seems to be the only person who knows what's going on — which is exactly the thing that makes him look crazy? Yeah. Pick it up)
The sapphic one: Carmilla by Sheridan Le Fanu
If you pick up one 19th century vampire story, let it be Carmilla!! Please!! There's a stunning illustrated edition out there, edited by Carmen Maria Machado (which preserves the original text but has some additional footnotes to spice things up read: make it even gayer and it's glorious). It's the first lesbian vampire story published even before Dracula and it's so so so good!! And only like 90 pages? What's stopping you?? I reread this every October and it only gets better every time.
The obscure: Olalla by Robert Louis Stevenson
Isn't that the guy from Treasure Island? I hear you say. Or: isn't that the guy who wrote Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde? Yup, both correct! And he also wrote this banger of a vampire story that doesn't involve any bloodsuckers, but it does involve a familial curse and a deliciously overdramatic gothic romance. Everything about this screams vampire, except are the villains of this book really vampires?? Who knows! In any case, the discussion of blood and moral inheritance alone is incredibly fascinating, especially if you consider some leading theories of the time, and I would write an essay on it if I had the time. Highly recommended but only if you've read more vampire literature in the past! I feel like this stands more strongly as an answer on the literary phenomenon of The Vampire™️, than as a vampire story in itself.
Oh and it's only 50 pages! I read it in like one sitting and had a blast. I don't usually write in books but almost every other line in here is underlined (and almost half of those are highlighted)
The original: The Vampyre by John Polidori
Admittedly I still have to read this one in full myself, but I'm waiting for the right time because I'm excited!! It's The original vampire story. Was originally attributed to Lord Byron because of its literary themes and main character (which was actually inspired by Lord Byron himself, which then started a discussion in literary circles about whether this was, therefore, still a creation of Byron's if he served as a primary source of inspiration — and that discussion alone is fascinating!!). Anyway, it was written during the same ghost story writing contest as the one where Mary Shelley wrote Frankenstein! And it's the very first English language vampire story of its kind. Introducing the aristocratic vampire who preys on women (which, again, somewhat inspired by Byron himself. Polidori probably had the hots for that man, just saying. Which also kind of makes this very first vampire story the very first gay vampire story. Subtextually. If you're willing to believe speculation anyway.)
The one that technically isn't 19th century but it's so good I still have to include it: Christabel by Samuel Taylor Coleridge
Okay let me preface this by saying it was written in the 18th century, every single character in here is gay, and it's a narrative ballad!! It rhymes!! I'm not sure why but that always tickles my brain.
The main vampiric character here isn't an actual vampire but she sure is something sinister, and most definitely seducing our main character (who is a medieval lady) in a way that is definitely not subtextual. It is very much there. I can make a post about this but I'll shut up because this is already turning into an essay.
Again, probably best appreciated if you've already read like 1 or 2 other vampire stories. And it's unfinished (and ends right when it gets good??) But so worth reading because I feel like this set a sort of vague precedent for the Actual Vampire Stories to follow? Plus, Coleridge is amazing in general.
Anyway let me know if you read any of them because I'd love to hear what you think!!
Thinking about 19th century vampire literature on this fine evening

watched the first two eps of "The Haunting of Bly Manor" with my gf. surprised by how much I like the characters, they are really three-dimensional. the main character is in equal parts outspoken and fragile, she didn't shy away from being frank with the kids uncle but she obviously has her own struggles with panic attacks etc.
And the boy, I wonder if he's possessed? Possibly the demon/creature sprang over from the former governess or she sacrificed herself for them. Might explain Miles question in the school lesson, if demons need permission to enter men (yes), his curious strength and weird behaviour towards the protagonist. What does he mean with the talk about needing to find keys though? Keys to what? And how does the emphasis on the innocence of animals fit into this? Why do the children leave at midnight to the lake (I'm assuming).
Why does the former governesses boyfriend turn up? Was he possessed as well (and has passed it onto her, driving her to suicide)? Is Owens remark that people are born and die in Bly relevant?
Anyway, I'm quite excited for the next episode.

saw "much ado about nothing" at the globe today. one of these experiences making me wish I had photographic memory in order to go over every moment again and again. the scenery showing a villa in post-war italy. the wonderful period-appropriate costumes (and Beatrice was the only one of the women wearing pants! very fitting). the hilarious physical comedy - while eavesdropping, Beatrice got tangled in a sort tennis net, then stepped onto the sprinkler on the lawn. The whole theatre was laughing. They also constantly involved the audience, like looking at someone in the audience during the "one woman is fair, yet I am well" monologue.
I also stood during the whole performance, having chosen the cheapest tickets, meaning I was mich closer to the actors and it made for a wholly different interaction with the crowd, it was so immersive. and the actress playing beatrice was so attractive. certainly helped keep my eyes on the stage

one thing I like about "Tender is the Flesh" is how it's not a perfect dystopia. The systems has cracks showing, people are sometimes more, sometimes less aware of the inhumanity of this. Not everyone is 100% on board, 100% brainwashed, no matter what the media tries to instill in people. Think of the job applicant getting sick when seeing the slaughtering process for example.
That's what draws you in though, that's the terrifying aspect of it. This world seems so realistic and natural, it's not comfortingly distant from our own reality. And even "good" people, normal people who sort of recognize the atrocity of it, participate in the system because they need to.

Halloween Reads 2022
Having gladly, though belatedly, figured out how to borrow audiobooks from Overdrive, I've been listening to a bunch of seasonally-appropriate books and have a desire to talk about them. Sometimes, having a dusty old review blog comes in handy.
Tumblr media
SHIVER by Maggie Stiefvater (YA-Paranormal Romance-Werewolves)
I've been meaning to read Shiver for a solid decade and just haven't. Partly, I'd gotten burned out on Stiefvater toward the end of the Raven Cycle's heyday, but also I'm terrible at actually reading things in my TBR. And you know what? It's good. Not as good as The Scorpio Races, but it's good; definitely has the dark atmospheric mood that you want as the nights get longer. Both narrators were fine, but I thought Jenna Lamia's acting was particularly nice.
Tumblr media
The Door by the Staircase by Katherine Marsh (MG-Historical Fantasy-Witches)
I have only a passing familiarity with Baba Yaga, so it was nice to see some Slavic folklore! I also felt this did a good job of bringing a little freshness to the Downtrodden But Plucky Orphan Protagonist, and the witchy aesthetics are really fun. Laural Merlington's narration was fantastic as well.
Tumblr media
Too Bright to See by Kyle Lukoff (MG-LGBTQ/Paranormal-Ghosts)
I've been so excited to read this since it came out (a whole year ago; again, I'm the worst) and it definitely didn't disappoint! I knew it was a ghost story as well as a trans self-discovery/coming out story, but I didn't expect the two threads to be this interconnected. It's such a beautiful book, even with its sad and scary bits. One of my favorite queer MGs, for sure.
Tumblr media
Dracula (no further details provided on account of you all know anyway)
I DNF'd this book when I was about 19 and have periodically thought about picking it up again, but you people with your Dracula Daily posts finally got to me. I endorse the audiobook, because I definitely zoned out quite a bit and yet seemed to miss nothing important, which is something I have less tolerance for when I'm reading a text. It is, however, 19 hours long. I enjoyed it more than I thought I would, but wow, it's more racist and sexist than I remember.

Glad I could be of at least a little help ^-^
Yeah I'm curious what stuff like Vampire Project, Golden Blood, and OMG Vampire are going to turn out to be. I'm not watching 1000 Years because it looked to squeecore for my personal tastes. But it seems more in line with kdrama styled vampires while stuff like Vampire Project look to be going in a more Japanese direction - by which is more erotic and gothic.
Vampires seem to be a western cultural export, but I wouldn't say the slew of vampire projects are only influenced by western films, if at all.
There hasn't been a super vampire hit since Twilight from the states. Vampire movies/shows I've seen in the last few years in America (mainstream wise anyway keeping up with straight-to-tape stuff is hard lol) have either been comedies - What We Do In the Shadows (not an American production but big in America and on Hulu), Renfield, Day Shift, Vampires vs. the Bronx - or horror - The Invitation, The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
Even in The Invitation which has erotic elements the film is mostly horror (it's also a lot of fun I enjoyed it and Nathalie Emmanuel is beautiful, love seeing her get work). I think the only actual big vampire hit since Twilight has been, What We Do In The Shadows, and Dracula Daily; which is a newsletter I think?
I am excited to see vampires get to be horny and erotic again tho. And finally gay in the mainstream.
Hiya, finally got around to reading your post on the horror influences of DFF (thank you) and because it added immensely to my to watch list, I was wondering if you had any recommendations / resources for my current side quest.
Last week I watched both 1000 years old and Red Wine in the Dark Night and came across two very different vampires neither of which has fangs. And while that might still be a coincidence (n=2 is not a good basis) it was enough to make me realise that I do close to nothing about Thailand (and related) vampire lore.
While it is a blessing that we are going to have five thai vampire BLs this year, in this case it is actually a curse because any combination of keywords I can think of leads me to 1000 images of Boun staring at me with red eyes. And in this ONE instance, this is actually a complaint.
So, rambles over: Do you have any recommendation for thai horror / supernatural stories that feature vampires / blood sucking ghosts demons or the like?
Hope you are having a good day and happy watching :-)
Tbh I don't know a ton of Thai vampire movies specifically. My knowledge of Thai cinema tends to skew action or horror and even that I'm still a newbie. What's more frustrating is a lot of older Thai films aren't available for streaming and you gotta pirate them - which hey, I'm no stranger to that life either I'm an anime fan lmao - though Netflix has started picking up more Thai imports recently. That's where I watched The Whole Truth, Girl From Nowhere, Trapped 13 (there's a documentary and a drama also fuck Elon Musk), and part of School Tales.
[Netflix is so fucking annoying they have some of the best catalog for international media around but they're so god damn greedy]
As far as I know in regards to like, are there even Thai vampires in mythology/folklore the closest thing I could find was the Krasue:
"A Krasue, sometimes called Pii Krasue, is a spirit that haunts most of Southeast Asia. [...] The Krasue is delightfully gory, consisting of a floating head with entrails and internal organs dangling from the neck. They usually manifest themselves as attractive young women with bloody hanging innards and float about accompanied by an eerie glow. Sometimes, they even have fangs like a vampire." (source)
So I think it's pretty safe to say that, uh, the vampires in upcoming Thai shows are not taking from Thai myth lol but probably Japanese and Korean media.
Japanese takes on vampires which were all the rage in the mid-00s: Blood The Last Vampire (2000), Vampire Knight (2008), Blood+ (2005), Hellsing (1997 - 2008), Blood C (2011), Blood Hound (2004), Trinity Blood (2005) I'm noticing a lot of "blood" used in these titles.
Not that vampires aren't still a sub-genre in Japan, like gosh Seraph of the End was huge in 2013 and was a part of the small re-boom of anime/manga during that time period after the bubble popped.
Korea's also done vampires there seems to have been a bit of a boom in the mid-00s (Vampire Idol 2011, Immortal Goddess 2016) and then again recently (Kissable Lips 2022, Bite Sisters 2021, Heartbeat 2023). From what little I've seen in Korean media - I haven't watched either of the mid-00s shows - vampires tend to be more romance fodder, and treated like any other fantasy creature rather than something scary or demonic.
Which falls in line with the trailer for 1000 Days - which I have also not watched so correct me if I'm wrong and it's actually scary as fuck lmao - while Japanese vampire media ranges from romantic but more gothic or outright just for horror and action.
In my experience horror films from Japan, Korea and Thailand don't usually have blood sucking ghosts or demons? Not saying there's none, but most of the films I've watched the ghosts weren't like, of the blood sucking variety. They tend to be connected to curses left behind because of some sort of wrong done to the spirit in their past life.
Take, White Melody of Death, as an example which is a Korean horror film about a Kpop girl group. The curse that murders it's way through the characters is attached to the spirit of a character who died.
I really recommend this video on White if only b/c I adore Yhara's videos:

Even in The Whole Truth the spirit is more of seeking vengeance than like, to eat people. The concept of "demons" is different in various Asian countries than in an American/Anglo-Saxon context because of the differences in religious, and cultural roots.
Again, totally not an expert regarding all this, and I'm putting the rest under a read more for length but gonna talk a bit more about Japanese, and Chinese folklore (with sources!) under the cut. And I DO list some recs for general horror stuff I like.
Take the concept of "demon" for example:
"Yokai is not simply the Japanese word for demon, as is sometimes believed. They are the embodiment of a moment: a feeling of dread and bewilderment, or awe and wonder over an extraordinary event; or a strange sound or peculiar scent that demands an explanation; an ineffable phenomenon explained only by a supernatural entity. Little wonder then that the Japanese characters for Yokai are 妖怪, which taken individually could mean strange or alluring mystery!" (source)
You can see this reflected in Japanese media like the super famous Inu-yasha: A Feudal Fairytale by Rumiko Takahashi (Inuyasha when directly translated into English means "dog demon"). Where, in the story, there's a mix of demons both human like, creature like, and wide as far as individual morality goes - one of the protagonists, Inuyasha is a half-demon mixed with human it's a whole subplot of his character.
I've found this is more typical in the Japanese media I've engaged with. Like in Japanese horror like Dark Waters (2002) or Ringu (1998) they don't refer to the "monster" as a "demon" it's typically referred to as a ghost or spirit.
You can also see this in Chinese media like Yin Yang Master Dream of Eternity - where the protagonist is also a half demon I'm beginning to see a pattern in the media I like lmao - which makes sense since parts of Japanese folklore/mythology was inspired by Chinese mythology:
"Here, in his third book, Konjaku Hyakki Shui (Supplement to The Hundred Demons from the Present and the Past), Sekien finds inspiration in Chinese mythology." (source)
I feel like this is a long winded way of saying, uh, no I don't know any Thai specific movies about vampires or blood sucking demons. It seems like a fairly new genre exploration from what I've researched so far.
Anyway I can happily share some of my favorite Korean, Japanese and Thai horror things tho, but I really recommend others search themselves and explore the genre. Horror is so vast and flexible as a genre so there's a lot I haven't watched or maybe don't even vibe with that you might!
Perfect Blue, 1997, directed by Satoshi Kon - if you liked Black Swan you'd probably like this film if not more so, it's animated but it's such an amazing psychological horror film there's a reason Satoshi Kon's work has been so influential on media globally.
Girl From Nowhere, 2018 - I talk this one up a lot but I only like season 1 which imo is stronger conceptually, that said, a lot of folks liked season two as well! It has major Twilight Zone vibes, but with a central protagonist who is also a literal force of nature (is Nanno a deity, spirit, demon? No one actually knows and the ambigity is delicious) both seasons are available on Netflix.
Ringu, 1998 - I feel like even if you're a casual horror fan or the like you know of The Ring which is a 2002 remake of this Japanese horror film. I think the 1998 version is better if only because my beloved Hiroyuki Sanada is in it, tho as far as American remakes of Japanese horror films go, The Ring isn't a terrible one (the sequel is tho imo).
Hellsing Ultimate, 2006 - So there's an anime for Hellsing from 2002 that's okay, Hellsing Ultimate is a direct adaption of the manga and it's better. I recommend either reading the manga - the art is FANTASTIC - or watching Ultimate. Out of all three I prefer the manga if only because the art is so good, but if you want Dracula eating and fighting Nazis this is the story for you.
Vampire Princess Miyu, 1997 - this is partly nostalgia but the series is so beautifully animated and it's such a classic. The OVAs will probably be hard to find but if you can and you want some classic Japanese vampire stuff I really liked this back in my youth~~
God Child/Earl of Cain, 2005 - so this is a manga, and it's more Gothic horror than straight horror, but I'm adding it because Kaori Yuki's art is amazing, it's a very subtexually queer series, and it's very Sherlock Holmes meets Shirley Jackson in terms of story.
Train to Busan, 2016 - I am a HUGE zombie film fan love me some zombies and Train to Busan is in my top 3 easy. It's top down one of the best zombie films and the only one that tops it for me is the original Night of the Living Dead. The film has the tag team of Don Lee and Gong Yoo like are you kidding me?
I Saw The Devil, 2010 - This one is A Lot, but it stars Lee Byung-hun in one of his better roles and if you don't trust me watch Kennie JD's video on it.
The Guest, 2018 - This show was such an interesting mix of exorcism and shamanism. The scares were legit SCARY and the entire show was so unnerving, if you can handle slow burns and a good character driven ghost story I really liked this one.
#Alive, 2020 - Okay this feels like cheating cause it's not actually that scary like, at all lol at least not to me, but it's got zombies and the incredible Yoo Ah-In (there's also an American version with Tyler Posey that is unfortunately very bad).
Kingdom, 2018 - I am truly basic but it's SUCH a good zombie show!!! The thrills are amazing, and it had me and my Ma on the edge of our seats. It's not really scary to me, but like its a ymmv (zombies in general don't scare me lol they're just fun).
That's all I can think of right now, I know there's more in my head but I can't remember of them all lol and others that I've watched that I wouldn't really recommend - High School of the Dead, for example, is famous for it's "Matrix boobs" scene which is hilarious but not great cinema lmao - so I left a lot of stuff I know out.
This got long, sorry dude!
