So anyway, I lied in my last post. I saw a passing reblog about a dearth of Zuko/Haru fanfiction, and remembered that not only had I written a short Zuko/Haru fic once upon a delirious 2 a.m. but also that it was extremely lean, a skeleton really, desperately in need of some filling out.

It has been consuming my waking hours. J&R is currently on hold until I exorcise this dark spirit.

It feels unlikely given the way you structure the series but it would be SO funny to me if Willow properly stumbled into their not too long before the dying basilisk situation and for whatever reason happened to Be There.

Like imagine you're a bitter anarchist young adult who's been reluctantly drawn into the web of the entirely too kind Empress and you still really don't trust her or her overly aggressive bodyguard, and then you all stumble into a dying basilisk, a creature that you narrowly avoided being killed by at school that one time and then the Emperor's Coven carted them away and they were clearly terrified.

And then you react first, of course you do, why would the Empress and her stooge care about a member of what your research since you dropped out suggests is an extinct species (and you figure the Empire probably is the reason they aren't and not for anything good). Of course, what you don't know so that the Empress is only slower to react because of her extremely pertinent to this bizarre situation PTSD, and it's a moot point because she does arrive at your side a moment later.

Having presumably never gotten a coven mark, you know some healing magic, but not enough for a situation like this, and it's all you can do to buy the basilisk a minute at a time—and then the Empress calls her mom??? The human one????? And you write her off as useless right now because what help is human going to be here but then the human offers VERY specific guidance that helps you save the basilisk's life.

So now you know that 1. The Empress knows her human mom, 2. The Empress' mom knows exactly how to save a basilisk's life, 3. The Empress is genuinely as compassionate as she seems and oh now that you're able to think about it that complete loss of composure seems REALLY out of character for her; did this strike some sort of personal note?

Now for all her cleverness, I don't think Willow is the sort to be able to extrapolate anything beyond that given her limited knowledge of Luz's life compared to someone like Raine, but! I think it's possible Luz in her panic could let things slip about the Grimwalkers still.

On the one hand, Willow is an unknown who Luz doesn't trust yet and normally Luz is good at secrets.

On the other hand, Grimwalkers are possibly the only thing where Luz is LESS likely to tell Hunter than she would a whole lot of other people she knows, AND we've seen with Eda that Luz gets a lot worse at compartmentalizing information when she's Doing Rough which. Damn she sure is doing rough here, isn't she?

In light of the smoke bombs, I'm now recataloguing some of my previous assumptions [or well, hcs I guess] in this world.

Mainly because when I first read the fact that Cerise's hood enabled her to hide in the shadows, I was like yeah, okay make sense, they're clearly going for Cerise-is-wolf thing here so. Shadowy-cloak makes sense and I simply thought it was isolated to Cerise's hood.

But...the smoke bombs makes me wonder. Did Red just...already have a shadowy cloak?

That she passed down to Cerise?

Why you have a shadowy-cloak, Red? What possible use did you have for it if it wasn't for hiding bodies?

Deciding to go home and read these books has just left me with two thoughts.

One: Confused but intrigued on the lore.

Two: Red is a serial killer.

My absolute fave kinds of games to play are social deception games. So naturally I play them whenever I can.

Yesterday and today I've been playing some of those games with a guy I've never met before (and others). I think he and I played maybe six games of "two rooms and a boom" and two games of "the resistance" and afterward we had a fairly good idea of where we had each other.

BUT I never would have thought he knew so well where he had me that he would manage to do a bonkers but entirely correct read on me today in two separate situations and games.

I honestly didn't even think he'd even paid attention to me that much in the first place, because quite a lot of people were playing and I don't think he had much of a reason to single me out.

First, when we played "two rooms and a boom" today, he somehow managed to predict how I would reason about a vital decision two rounds ahead of that decision, enabling him to prepare for it by giving instructions to someone else on how they should act in the other room two rounds later.

Then, we played a third game of "the resistance" together. I got a blue role (the good guys). He sat next to me. The first round, he turned to look at me and asked, "Sara, are you a spy?" I said, "No." At which he turned forward again and told the others, "Okay, yeah, I'm almost 100% sure Sara isn't a spy."

I perked up because yeah I wasn't and no one ever trusts me in these games so wtf?? And the others were also wtf, because, yeah, no one ever trusts me. So they questioned him on it and asked why he thought so. He just smiled and said, "Because I asked her whether she's a spy, and she said no."

I have to assume it was something about my expression or gaze or tone of voice or whatever, but jfc, have you ever had someone who's barely more than an acquaintance look you straight in the eye and read you like an open book? Do you have any idea how absolutely fascinating and thrilling that can be?

I've got to befriend this guy. Got. To. So that's my new mission for tomorrow, which will be my last chance in a while.

(He repeated his explanation three times during the game when people asked him again why he trusted me. But he didn't elaborate further on it. Eventually they were convinced by him that I wasn't a spy nevertheless, even though they didn't even know for sure that he wasn't one. Fascinating.)

(I also asked him - twice - whether he was a spy. He said no (which turned out later to be correct). But he started laughing both those times, and the second time he told me, "don't smile like that when you ask, I can't help but laugh" so I guess I have a ways to go... Another reason to befriend him: So he can teach me his ways.)

having a crisis in a clothing store because there's so many clothes here. so many clothes, everywhere i look. filled to the brim with clothes. and there are more stores next to this one. why do we need so many clothes? how many of them are going to get thrown away after having been worn once? how many are going to get thrown away because nobody bought them??

basically my once and future boss (a small middle aged man who i could almost certainly beat in a physical fight but who scares the living shit out of me just bc of his vibe) was like "so... what have you been up to?" and i was like "uhh applying for jobs... and watching a lot of anime........"
